You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

Yesterday was... something. You watched Sylvie fight Niklaus, accidentally groped the Princess, nearly got killed as a result, beat Nicolette in a duel, and then showed up uninvited at her house to bake a cake.

Oh, and you found out that Sir Gregory is her father.

>Guard Rank: CAT
>Congratulations, you are now an annoying CAT!
>Not one of those fancy pedigree cats, but rather a mangy stray.
>The Princess now kind of likes you a little!
>But she still doesn't consider you to be a person.

Alright, it's voting time again. As before, you have two choices:

I leave it in your hands.

Tea/cake party HO!
>>
>>27905949
Can we JUST play the events directly related to the tea party we spent so much time preparing for?

That's all I really care about, but I know if we play the entire day we'll end up creating reasons to play the NEXT day as well and so on and so forth.
>>

Can we just skip to tea and then to party?

There's no point in playing through the next day if the party goes as planned.

The only reason to play through the party is if chaos happens. And after yesterday, I just want to assume it went well, because I don't know Reinhold can take another day like yesterday.

Arch, you might want to just make a ruling that says we'll be time skipping no matter what after this. We'll never make it to that party if you keep letting us vote. Our days are too eventful.

"C'mon, Reinhold!" Citrine says as she pulls you along. "I've been saving up for a while now, and with this latest payday I finally have enough!" she says, smiling warmly.
"Enough for what?" you ask as you do your best to keep up with the taller girl's stride.
"Enough so that we can spend the whole day doing whatever -you- want!" she replies. "You've been super gloomy lately, so I'm gonna take your mind off of the boss and Spinelle and all that bullshit!"

Upon hearing the mention of -that name-, a deep frown forms on your face.

"Hm? What's..." she stops and looks back at you. "...oh crap, I'm sorry... Should've known better than to mention her," she says as she pulls you into a hug. "Don't worry... the bad times have to end eventually. You just need to remember not to let them make you bad too."
"Yeah, I know..." you say as you hug her back.

Citrine... even though she has to put up with those awful men -and- the Boss's drunken beatings, she still manages to stay so cheerful. And for whatever reason, she's always so impossibly nice to you.

Even though you don't deserve it.

But being around you seems to make her happy, and, well... you like seeing her happy. That's why you do your best to push what happened last night out of your head and show her your best smile.

"Haha, there you go!" Citrine laughs as she tussles your hair.

She then takes your hand and leads you down the dirty streets of the town, taking you through all the shortcuts that she learned since she ended up in this worthless hole of a village last year.

Guess we know why old Reinhold is so nice to the princess. They do have a lot in common despite the completely different circumstances and personalities.
>>
>>27906203
i wonder if citrine knows who Reinhold's mom was.
>>
"Umm... where exactly are we going, anyways?" you ask.
"You like candy, right? There's a shop that JUST got in a shipment of imported stuff, so I was thinking that we'd check out what they have," Citrine replies excitedly.
"Impo... huh?"
"Fancy shit from other countries, dummy!" she says, playfully sticking her tongue out at you.

Most of the candy over here is kind of bland, but if it's from somewhere else... you feel yourself getting pumped up, and your pace speeds up to match hers.

"Alright, that's the spirit!" Citrine says with a laugh as she leads you through an alley...

...and slams right into a rather large man.

"Oh- I'm so sorry!" Citrine says, scrambling to her feet. "Are you okay?"
"I don't really appreciate gettin' hit by some dirty slut..." the man says as he dusts himself off. "I'm thinkin' that maybe you oughta pay me back for such a violent transgression."

The man cracks his knuckles as two others appear from behind some crates.

"Hey bro, whass goin' on?" a thin guy with greasy brown hair asks the larger man.
"This little slut ran inta me," the large man replies.
"You need some help with this?" another man with a shaved head asks.
"Yeah, keep the kid outta my way while I do my thing," the large man replies.

The three men's faces contort into sinister grins as they slowly approach. Pushing you safely behind her, Citrine stumbles back in horror.

"Reinhold, run," Citrine whispers, her voice trembling.

>>
>>27906310

No.

They're not going to hurt Citrine.

Not her.

You run in front of Citrine and draw your knife, pointing it at the approaching men. While you may be nothing more than a dirty little kid, you're still not about to let anything bad happen to the only person who actually gives a damn about you.

"Ha!" the bald man laughs. "Look at this punk, he thinks he's gonna cut us!"
"G... get back..." you say, brandishing the knife.
"Get the fuck out of the way or you'll be next, if you get my drift," the oily-haired man says, licking his lips.

Seeing that you're not about to back down, the bald man dashes towards you, drawing his fist back. But you can read his actions, jumping to the side just before he can hit. You then go on the offensive and plunge your knife deep into the man's forearm.

"GAAAAAH YOU LITTLE FUCKING SHIT!!" he screams in pain as he pulls his arm back, your knife still embedded deep inside it.
"Holy shit, the brat actually stuck him!" the oily-haired man shouts in surprise.
"FUCKING SHIT FUCK" the bald man pulls your knife from his arm and tosses it aside. "That's fucking it, this little piece of shit is dead!"

Having lost your only weapon, you ready yourself. Depending on how close you get, you might be able to gouge out the eyes of at least one of them... but before you can plan any further, you feel Citrine pulling on your arm.

"C'mon! We have to run!" Citrine shouts as she pulls you in close and starts running.

"C'mon! We have to run!" Citrine shouts as she pulls you in close and starts running.

Before she can get anywhere, however, the large man grabs her by the hair, stopping her dead in her tracks.

"That's enough messin' around, little slut. Time to pay up," he says as he pulls her close.
"LET HER GO!" you scream as you run in to save her.

Or not.

You feel someone's foot right in your chest as it propels you through the air, causing you to slam back-first into a wall.

"You're gonna watch what happens to her, you little shit," the bald man says, his eyes filled with rage. "And then you're next."

As Citrine screams for them to let you go, you try desperately to figure some way out of this... your knife is gone, but maybe you can pull something off of one of those crates to use as a weapon? No, it's too far away...

And then you hear someone whistling loudly from the other side of the alley.

"Who the fuck?" the large man shouts as he pushes Citrine into a wall and turns to the source of the sound. "The hell do you two want?"
"The young lady and boy who you're accosting happen to be friends of ours... would you mind letting them go? a gloomy-looking man with black hair says.
"Yeah, don't you two have anything better to do?" a muscular man with longish blonde hair says, sighing.

"M... Mr. Volker? Mr. Adrien!?" Citrine gasps. "Why are you..."

"Go ahead Volker, it's all yours," Adrien replies, shrugging.

And then he stops.

Or rather, he is stopped.

Indeed, but by clearing up any incorrect comments, questions, or concerns along the way while insulting those people who would dare post such things without fact-checking first is a way that pretentious whiners like me can get satisfation and also not get our character into stupid situations like Reinhold being confused about Greg being at Nico's house even though it was painfully obvious that Gregory was Nicolette's father, and I gave ample evidence multiple times that this was case. Stopping misconceptions early will prevent the response that I got, the 'Are you sure? He could be her uncle!' or similar unsubstantiated claims which are deleterious to Reinhold's well-being.

Volker then pulls his swords out, releasing a spray of blood as the large man falls to the ground. The other two watch in horror as Volker steps over the corpse and approaches them.

"Citrine, would you mind getting back where it's safe?" volker asks as he helps her to her feet.
"B- but what about Reinhold...?" Citrine pulls on his sleeve.
"Don't worry, I see him right there."

Panicking, the oily-haired man pulls you into a choke hold.

"S- stay back, dammit! I'm fucking serious, I'll kill the kid if you don't!" he screams.
"Come on now..." Volker sighs. "You don't honestly think that I can't get him away before you can even try?"

Volker then swings one of his swords and you can feel yourself... falling?

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH MY FUCKING ARM OH MY GOD MY ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRM" the oily-haired man screams as the place where his arm once was becomes a fountain of blood.

You quickly scramble behind Volker, taking care to make sure that Citrine is safely with Adrien before turning back around to watch Volker work.

A style of interacting with games or game-like systems with the aim of maximising progress towards a specific goal, to the exclusion of other considerations such as storytelling, atmosphere and camaraderie. "YOU PIECE OF SHIT DON'T FUCKING LEAVE ME HER-" the greasy-haired man's screams are cut short by Volker's sword slicing through his throat.

"SHIT NO NO NONONONONONONONO" the bald man runs away as fast as he can, but Volker gets to him before he can make it out of the alley, running him through with both swords in the same way that he did the first man.

With a sigh, Volker wipes off and sheaths his swords as he walks back towards you.

"Sorry that you had to see all that..." Volker says with a guilty laugh.
"Uh- no- thanks, I mean-" you stammer.

Volker tussles your hair as he leads you out of the blood-filled alley. Finally turning the corner into a street with actual people in it, Citrine rests against the side of a building.

"Th... thnk you so much..." Citrine sobs as she hugs you tightly. "If you hadn't shown up, we'd have been..."
"You don't have to say any more," Adrien says, patting her on the head. "I'm just glad that we were able to find you two before it was too late."
"Yeah, you were gone when we got to the brothel, so we were wondering where you'd gotten to," Volker says.

"Uh, what for?" you say as you manage to squirm out of Citrine's grip.
"Heh... this is all you, Volker," Adrien says, laughing.
"Dammit man I thought you were going to back me up..." Volker sighs. "Alright, let's talk about this somewhere more pleasant."

The three of you then follow Volker into a nearby restaurant... it's in this village so it's far from anything that one could consider "nice," but it's the closest thing to a decent eating establishment around. You then take seats at a table, and Volker orders everyone a massive amount of turkey legs.

"Th..." you say, your mouth full of food. "...this is great! Thanks!"
"And thanks for saving us too..." Citrine says, drying her eyes with a napkin.
"Meh, just doing as a man should..." volker says as he finishes off a turkey leg and grabs another.
"Why don't you get to asking them already?" Adrien says, a sly grin on his face. "I wanna see how they react.
"Dammit, Adrien..." Volker sighs, "Alright, then..."

"You see, I actually have quite a bit of money... me and Adrien only roll with our boss for the adventure," volker sighs. "So I was thinking the last time I was here... uh... how about I pay your boss off and take you two in?"

You choke on your food, coughing hard for a few minutes. And Citrine just stares at Volker in shock.

"M... Mr. Volker... is this a p- pro-" Citrine stammers.
"Don't worry," Adrien says, laughing. "Volker only likes maids."
"Shut the hell up!" Volker shouts, his face turning red. "I don't want to hear that shit from a waitress fetishist!"
"You're just jealous that my taste in ladies is better than yours."

"ANYWAYS," Volker says, sighing, "this is a really shitty town and you two are way too good for this place... so how about it? I have a place in Marconetti and I'd take you two as my son and daughter. I can't say that I'll be able to fight off the wanderlust, but I would like to give you two a better future."
"Oh... wow... I- I mean..." Citrine struggles to gather her words. "I... I mean... even if you were to pay for me to leave, I don't know if the Boss would be willing to give Reinhold up..."

>[9/?]
>>
>>27908525

Volker takes a deep breath and smiles guiltily.

"Well... how about this? We're heading back out tomorrow to see a man about a sword, but we'll be back in about a month," Volker says.
"Nobody's going to give a guy nicknamed 'Swordbreaker' anything -that- valuable, you know... I'm the one who'll get picked," Adrien says as he takes another bite.
"I have a better chance than you, you asshole... anyways, we'll be back in a month so you can make your decision then. How about it?"

"Um... I guess..." Citrine says, unsure how to take this.
"A... are you sure?" you ask. "I mean, you could get a kid way better than me..."
"Quit putting yourself down, Reinhold," Adrien says, rustling your hair with his free hand. "You're a good kid and you have promise and this jackass has been antsy about finding an heir to his family's sword style."
"Heh, there was that too..." Volker laughs nervously.

You walk to your desk and pick up the book that the Princess gave you last night, "The Legend of Alsiradna." The Princess went through the trouble of lending you her favorite book, so you figure that you ought to read it as soon as possible.

Taking a seat, you begin reading...

It begins when the world was a ball of burning magma and the planet's ring had yet to form... in a time before dragons or anything else, two spirits were born from fire itself. Together, they explored the newly created world before eventually returning to the place where they had been born.

To distinguish themselves from each other, the older spirit gave himself the name Anrasorana and the younger called himself Alsiradna. After naming themselves, they then slept for countless aeons.

When they woke, the formerly black sky was now blue, and the magma had become stone. Anrasorana decided to see what the world had become and headed off, leaving his brother alone.

When Alsiradna next next saw his brother, Anrasorana was in a strange body of flesh, draped in a material that he'd never seen before. Anrasorana excitedly spoke of the strange beings that had appeared during their slumber, and brought him to see them for himself...

You back away from the door so that Melanie can come in. and she closes the door behind her.

"Sorry to intrude, but it's about this afternoon..." Melanie says, blushing slightly.
"Oh. Yeah, it woul be kind of bad if the Princess overheard us in the hallway," you reply.
"So I was checking in the kitchen to make sure everything is ready, and I realized that now we have -two- cakes... did you still want someone to head into town and get something from the Wilhelms' bakery?"

Well, Sylvie and Nicolette do eat a lot... and you doubt they'd try and control their appetite in front of the Princess the way that you do.

"Yeah, it'd probably be better to have more," you say. "And if there's any left over, she can always eat them later."
"Yes, the Princess does love her sweets..." Melanie says. "I'll go find someone to head into town right away!"

Melanie then bows to you and heads to your door.

"And I apologize for bothering you this early," Melanie says.
"Don't worry about it, I owe you for taking care of this for me," you reply.
"Well, I suppose I'll be seeing you later... take care!"

You'd like to get back to reading... but losing track of time and being late for breakfast would be kind of really bad. ESPECIALLY after all the drama that happened yesterday, you don't want to do anything that would upset the Princess again.

Then you get the idea to kill two birds with one stone- you can read it while you wait downstairs! While you might have a little bit under an hour to wait for the Princess, it's not like you're unused to standing in one place for long periods.

With that decided, you grab the book and head downstairs, taking your usual place beside the entrance to the dining hall.

And then you read.

Picking up from where you left off, Anrasorana led his brother to a village filled with creatures in a form similar to that which he wore. He explained that they were called "humans," and had been shown how to build houses and make clothing by higher beings known as "dragons."

Alsiradna thought it all very strange, but his brother encouraged him to imitate the humans as well since he found their ways to be fascinating. Doing as told, Alsiradna took on a body of flesh... desiring to be the same as his brother, his human form was a male of similar appearance to Anrasorana's. And as he was the younger brother, he decided that his human appearance would follow suit and so he took the form of a child around the age of twelve.

The two then joined the village and were quickly accepted, their greater strength and endurance causing them to be lauded as the heroes of the village. Alsiradna's interests began to focus inward, as he took great concern as to how the humans treated one another and did his best to right what he saw as injustice.
Anrasorana, on the other hand, focused outwards, taking on the myriad beasts which threatened the lives of the weak human villagers.

This continued on for several generations, with the two brothers becoming lauded as the ageless guardians of the humans of their area. But eventually, their place at the top was challenged.

Coming from the south, a group of seven strangely-dressed humans who called themselves Dragons came to the village, demanding tribute for the gifts of culture they claimed that their race had brought the humans. Angered that anyone would dare to threaten the humans in their charge, the two brothers stepped forth to fight the so-called Dragons.

After a long battle, the Dragons grew tired of this farce and one pierced Anrasorana's heart with a single blow, throwing Alsiradna into a rage. Still in human form, he fought all of the Dragons back and swearing vengeance.

But Anrasorana was not dead.

Covering the ground with his blood, Anrasorana stood up and swore to the Dragons that they would suffer the same pain that they had inflicted onto him. He then assumed his true form and promptly incinerated half of his attackers instantly.

Awed by his actions, the humans who witnessed that day's battle gave Anrasorana the title of "Undying Inferno."

"...you're actually reading it?" a female asks.

Oh crap!

Realizing that you'd once again lost track of time, you quickly turn to the Princess, who is surrounded by giggling maids.

>IPA is an international pronunciation standard. Breaks words down into syllables, etc. Generic guide, basically.

IPA is a linguistic method for transcribing human speech, an alphabet that has a lot of signs for various phones and phonemes.

After you know some basic phonetics and the IPA, to write in ASCII you can convert the IPA into X-SAMPA or something similar.

Learning the basics of phonetics is easy and fun for anyone interested in worldbuilding and making up interesting-sounding names for their fantasy stuff. Any library should have at least some introductory book to linguistics, which should include a chapter on basic stuff like this.

It is much easier to figure out what to do than with tectonics or climates.

>text for languages that aren't 1:1 phonetically.

No language has a 1:1 phonetic writing system. Not even Finnish.

IPA can be used at varying levels of phonetic "granularity".

Language phonologies (their sound systems) are built on top of slightly abstract entities called phonemes. Phonemes are a collection of actual sounds that act as one elemental sound in one particular language. In contrast to a phoneme, "phones" are sounds as they actually are, physically and physiologically: phonemes are a spectrum or collection of phones that make up the smallest indivisible element of a phonological system in a particular language.

IPA is very, very granular, but phones are that also, so most of the time what you use IPA for is as a transcription of phonemes in a language, with more phonetic distinctions if you need.

"Well, it was either that or eat it, and I prefer turkey legs," you say. "Good morning, Princess."

Princess Marianne simply looks at you with an amused smirk and heads into the dining hall as the maids do their best to keep from giggling too loudly. As she walks past, Melanie gives you a thumbs-up.

Was that because she liked the joke?

Oh, wait- that was probably to tell you that the bakery run is set. Or maybe both. With a sigh of relief, you follow them into the dining hall and take your seat beside the Princess.

"So, um..." the Princess turns to you, "...what do you think of the book so far?"

"Yes... Alsiradna is rather particular about that, but Anr-"
"Don't spoil it!" you cut the Princess off without thinking.
"Oh- er, sorry. Luciana is always terrible about that, so I know how annoying it is when people spoil things..."

"But I do wonder how much of it is myth and how much actually happened. I mean, he killed -seven- dragons?"
"Yes, there is a bit of exaggeration in there..." the Princess replies. "I doubt he fought seven at once, but Anra was said to quite powerful in his day. Before the Fall, his raw power was estimated to be around that of an 800-year dragon."

All that reading has made you hungry, so you quickly get to CONSUMING your croissants. As you bite into their flaky goodness, you thank the good fortune that got you this job in the first place... you've never eaten so well before.

The Princess finishes eating shortly after you, talking to Melanie about something or other before the maids disperse and the two of you leave the dining hall to head for her first class.

"Today is the usual schedule," the Princess says to you as you walk. "First is politics, and then is..." she sighs, looking away, "ballroom dancing, and then we'll end with etiquette."
"Alright," you reply.

You quickly make it to the classroom where Sir Gregory is waiting, then take your usual seats.

"Nice to see you again, Reinhold. Princess," Sir Gregory says, looking to be in a bit of a foul mood. "While I honestly didn't mind very much... try and give some warning before you show up at my house in the future. I was treated to Nicolette bitching at me the entire carriage ride here."
"...you were at their house last night?" the Princess asks you, an expression of total surprise on her face.

"Yeah, I swung by," you say casually.
"I... see?" the Princess flashes you another confused look, and then turns away.
"Sorry for making your life harder, Sir Gregory."
"Meh, I'm more than used to it by now," Sir Gregory says, sighing.

He then gets to the day's lecture, which is about Marconetti's nobility. Aside from the royal family itself, there are several noble lines that trace their roots back to the country's founding, with each king bringing a few more in.

The current king Celestino in particular has brought several families into the nobility, many of whom having been his allies from back in his adventuring days. Among their number is the Paschen family, the youngest son of which being the spy who you caught in town the other day.

But despite their tradition of service, Sir Gregory has no kind words to say about any of Marconetti's nobility. Instead, he goes on a LONG rant about how they're all the worst kind of phony suck-ups, and warns both of you against befriending any of them while you're in Marconetti.

With Sir Gregory's long lecture finally over, the two of you head to the courtyard for tea. Opening the door for her, you step aside to let the Princess in...

...and she freezes upon seeing who else is there.

"...Sylvie?" the Princess says, completely shocked. "Wh... what are you doing here?"
"Umm..." Sylvie begins, fidgeting, "...Reinhold said that you wanted to celebrate my beating Mr. Niklaus so I should show up for afternoon tea...?"
"Reinhold? You called her here?" the Princess asks you, completely unsure as to what's going on.
