Shedding his old suburban facade, Drake finally had the chance to be the duck of his dreams. Only problem was, he was losing touch with the people he cared about most chasing Negaduck down his demonic rabbit-hole. That, and the backwards, ignorant quacks he had to deal with on a daily basis.

Sheriff Muddlefoot came running up to him in a frenzy.
"The boys found 'em, Darkwing! Holed up east o' the ol' silver mine. You were right, they got miss Gosy with 'em, stringin' 'er up to some forsaken altar!" he squealed.
"Damn... well go get LP and have 'im meet me at the edge o' town." That got his attention. Negaduck had settled for his usual larceny and battery when they first arrived here in Abilene, but lately his crimes had taken a gruesome turn that stank of the occult.

Securing his holster belt, he slammed his last shot of whiskey before ambling out of the saloon. The hooves of LP's appaloosa thundered as he rode up.
"The old mine, DW, about an hour's ride away. Think we're too late?" Drake squinted at LP's silhouette on the afternoon sun.
"Nah, we got time yet. Negaduck's lookin' to wrangle with things that go bump in the night. Don't do no good for him to come callin' this time o' day."
"Sure hope you're right, DW..." there was fear in his voice. They galloped west into the hills in silence.

Bullets flew, ducks scrambled for their arms, but Negaduck and his shaman made no move and showed no concern. Two of the ducks went down in seconds. Looking the last in the eye, Drake's pistol jammed. He froze, and all the terror of his old self rushed to the forefront. The duck grinned and took aim...

A crack of thunder, and he crumpled to the ground. LP had saved his feathers yet again. Drake turned to the black ritual taking place before them.
"Negaduck! Stop this madness! What are you trying to prove!?" he called to his old nemesis. Negaduck slowly turned to face him, holding some wretched old tome. The shaman continued to wail.
"Ah, old Darkwing Duck, come to play the hero once again! Finally found a world that goes along with your charade, you see little and understand less."

As Drake stared in awe, the shadow began to take a twisted form that could only be described as demonic.

The time for reason had passed.
"Hell, Neg, I don't know what you got yerself into here, but you're not taking Gos with you!"
He flung himself at the crazy quack, knocking the book out of his hands. Another crack pierced the moaning wind, and the shaman fell silent in a pool of blood. Drake and Negaduck wrestled on the ground, exchanging blows. Negaduck smashed his hand on a rock, knocking his pistol free. He pulled a cleaver from his duster and hacked away at Drake's head. Dodging, Drake drove his foot into the duck's stomach and broke free.

He ran, stumbling, to Goselyn. He grabbed the right nail and pulled with all his strength, and it eventually came out with a jerk. Looking over his shoulder Negaduck was nowhere to be seen... must've ran off into the dark. He worked feverishly at the second nail, the demon moan rising to an all-consuming cacophony in his ears. He almost had it, when he felt a sharp pain in his wrist.

The cleaver was embedded in the wooden crucifix, his right hand resting atop it, still grasping the nail. He turned to see Negaduck reeling back from one of Gos' mean left hooks. The girl had regained her composure and yanked the remaining nail out herself before falling to the ground in exhaustion. Drake stood there dumbfounded. He was so proud of her, she was so strong, strong like he had always wished he was.

A final crack sent a bullet through Negaduck's skull, and suddenly the hills were silent. Goselyn ran to him and wrapped him up in the tightest hug they'd ever shared. Moments or minutes later, he couldn't tell, LP rode up with their horses. As they were saddling up Drake wandered over to the book Neg had given up his life and sanity for. It was bound in what looked like duckskin, ancient nonsense scribed in blood on the pages within. He hesitated before tossing it on one of the bonfires.

"And that's how I lost my hand," Drake said to the crowd of quacks gathered round the bar. A few drew hushed breath.
"Now, DW, it weren't so strange as that! Just a few bandits done kidnapped lil' Gos here." LP provided the usual voice of sobriety, as he often did during Drake's drunken rants.
"All I know is he saved me," piped Goselyn before giving him a kiss on the cheek. "He's saved all of us at some point or 'nother." The crowd murmured in vague agreement.

After the audience thinned, Gos and LP having turned in for the evening, Drake lingered at the saloon. He had lost more than a hand that night, some piece of him deep inside that was never coming back. He had never decided exactly what happened in those hills, what he heard or saw. All he knew was that no matter what Negaduck had claimed, there was no going back.

He looked up at the man in the office. "J-James..." he coughed, shivering. "James, they bit me. P-please... you must--" he grimaced in pain, closing his eyes. Taking a slow, deep breath, he continued, "You must do what I cannot. But first... please, James...." He opened his eyes again, eyes momentarily clear and shining with lucidity. "Kill me."

Bond straightened himself up, began to say something and thought better of it. He simply nodded, drawing his Walther. Steadying his aim, Bond drew in his breath and shot. A final breath escaped Robin Hood's lips.

Bond holstered his pistol and knelt, closing Robin's eyes. Gingerly, he un-slung his horn and picked up his battered hat. Donning them with his crisp, well-tailored suit, he took also the quiver of blessed arrows and Robin's favored longbow.
