And on that ominous note we headed off into the wilds, theoretically towards the Druidic Grove. As we climbed up the next hill we could see the wilds stretching before us. In the distance behind us we could see the lands of Albero Città. In the foreground, up against the distant mountains we could see the structures of the Drudic Grove, about the size of ants in the distance. Something about their small relative size struck a chord in my memory. I turned to Martina, “Say, Martina. While the sun is still rising, how about I take you up on that offer of seeing the sunrise from dragonback? Can you fly us over to the Druidic Grove?”

Martina turned to me with a smile, “You know… I think I can.”

The experience of flying on a dragon’s back was just as exhilarating as I remember. Martina indeed spoke true when she described how beautiful the sunsets were from the high altitude. The rest of the party may not have appreciated the view as much, seeing as they were clutched in the dragoness’ claws. It wasn’t long before we soared over the hills that separated us from our destination. We set down as the sun was finally peaking over the hills. As we landed, we saw the local druids and rangers running around in minor panic. As a ring of druidic and ranger guards began to surround us. As Martina shifted back to her human form I stepped towards the senior druid, “Hello sir. I’d like to ask permission to take shelter here for the near future.”

After some persuading, the druids were convinced to ignore the giant dragon that was in our group and allowed us to stay in the grove for the next week or so in exchange for the typical donations to help maintain the land. We had access to the hot springs and a small cabin to stay in at the edge of the grove. We also got a messenger to send a message to the Albero Città docks to let Siegbert and presumably Captain Boniface know that we were alive and had reached the druidic grove.

We then set about settling in to our cabin. There was enough beds for each of us, I took the master bed that was large enough for several. I recall hoping to put it to good use by the time the break was over.

That day we started out or small vacation by eating a light lunch composed of some wild elk and collected berries. After that we decided to head for the famous hot springs. The local pools were divided into a mix of men only, women only, and mixed communal pools. There were also a number of private pools available for an additional donation. I paid to have one reserved for our use later in the evening, hoping that I could find a good time to take Martina there. After buying the light cotton robes required in the communal pools for the seven of us we headed down to the communal pool to enjoy a nice and relaxing day. However no sooner had we gotten down there, but we found the pool occupied. A large number of the younger women druidic initiates and female ranger trainees were waiting around someone in the center of the pool. As we got closer we could hear some of what he was saying.

“So there I was, sitting in this tavern and all the guards and foul scum around me were talking about this Knight. However, they were spreading this rumor that he was this evil Deathknight and were talking about how they were going to hunt him down for the bounty. Now I couldn’t stand for this injustice so I stood up and said, ‘Hey now! I’ve met this Knight and this dragon! They are hardly the monsters you make them out to be! I was once one of you, mislead into thinking that the Knight was a brigand or someone else worth hunting! Me and my companions even attacked the Knight under that assumption. However after the battle, the Knight asked how I came to be fighting him and when I explained my cause, he showed mercy and spared my life!’ Now as you can probably guess, this wasn’t a popular opinion to voice in that tavern. Two of the foul ruffians surrounding me stood up and drew their blades. ‘We aren’t here for justice, we just want the money!’ one roared at me before lunging with his blade. Naturally I defended myself as best as I could but even as I took down scores of them, their numbers eventually overwhelmed me. However as all seemed lost, suddenly the door burst open from a mighty kick! There, in his gleaming armor and majestic white cloak, was the Noble Knight himself! He quickly dispatched the brigands and scum who were about to kill me and drove them off. It turned out that he and his party were stopping to restock their provisions and they overheard me defending the Knight’s honor. When things turned sour, he burst in to return the favor. And that ladies, is how I met the Noble Knight the second time.” As the assorted ladies oohed and ahed around him I shook my head quietly. I think I’m really coming to hate Gaël.

I told the ladies to just ignore the braggart and head for one of the side pools. While it did irk me to let him get away with his wild exaggerations, I was at least treated to the sight of his face frozen in fear and terror as we passed by. We settled down into the smaller pool and began to truly relax for the first time in ages.

As we were soaking in the hot water, Martina turned to Sieghild, “Say dw- Sieghild, could you help me braid my hair, I like the way that yours looks, with that single braid down the back.”

Sieghild sighed, “Dr- Martina, you can’t just braid your hair like that. Dwarves have a lot of rituals attached to the way you wear your hair. For instance, these braids,” Sieghild indicated some braids towards the end of her hair, “indicate that I’m traveling on a quest. These ones,” she indicated some beaded knots further up along the braid, “mean that I was recently working with beers and other alcoholic drinks. These show my time working with Father at The Rusting Anvil Inn.”

Martina looked closer, “What about those knots? The ones near the iron beads with axes engraved into them?”

“Those… I’d rather not talk about those right now if its alright.”

I remembered what Siegbert had said abut Sieghild’s time in the militia, “Yeah, she doesn’t talk about it much. Evidently she lost a few people and hasn’t really let go of them…” I frowned a little, concerned, but Martina evidently noticed the mood shift too and decided to let the matter rest.

Martina shrugged, “So what braids would be appropriate for a dragon?”

“Hmm… that’s hard to say. Dragons are a bit of a tricky combination of warrior, wizard, and scholar. I guess I could throw a few of those braids together and see how it turns out…”

“Would you? That would be great.”

After some more banter about meaningless trivialities, I had to leave for a moment to relieve myself. As I was returning I overheard a bit of their conversation in my absence.

“So Martina, what’s the real reason you asked about me braiding your hair?”

“Hrmm? I just didn’t want it hanging on my shoulders. That’s all.”

Felìcita’s voice cut in here, “So, after hundreds of years a dragon decides to change something about its humanoid form? Are you sure it has nothing to do with Master Knight? I heard something about something going on between him and Sieghild here.”

Aimèe cut in here, “What’s this now? Come on, Sieghild, spill the beans.”

Sieghild protested, “Oh, it was nothing,” but none of the other girls would have it.

Veila spoke up, “Oh don’t give us ‘it was nothing!’ Now we know that something happened. Something big… Go on, tell us!”

Rina coughed, “Well, normally I’d stay out of childish arguments like this, but now I’m really curious. What exactly did happen?”

And so under their prodding and nagging, Sieghild eventually told the story of my armor fitting. When Sieghild came to the part in her story about the cup sizing, the entire pool erupted into gasps and giggling.

Veila asked, “So Sieghild… how was it?”

“Huh? What do you mean?”

“Oh don’t give me that, you know perfectly well what I mean. How was it? Sir Knight’s
mighty blade?’ His ‘powerful sword?’ You know…”

Rina broke in, “She doesn’t have to tell us that…”

Veila retorted, “Oh stop being so uptight, guardswoman! I can tell that you want to know too!”

“What you couldn’t know – I mean, that’s not true at all!”

Sieghild started talking again, “Well… it’s… it’s impressive to say the least. What I wanted to know was how Martina knew about all that. I didn’t think she was the type to spy on other’s private moments…”

Rina’s voice almost quavered a little as she asked her next question, “Are they…” she turned to Martina, “Sorry, are you two… are you two together?”

There was an audible intake of breath, I could even hear it from where I was standing, at this question. The silence that followed lasted several moments.

“Well…” Martina answered, “It’s complicated.”

Felìcita added, “It’s really complicated.”

Sieghild continued, “It’s really, really complicated.”

Veila spoke next, “Go on…”

With that Felìcita, Martina, and Sieghild began to explain the “arrangement” that they had worked out and how it came to be.

As they explained, Aimèe raised a hand to cover her mouth in shock, Veila started to cackle, and Rina turned red from her face to her quivering ears.

Veila continued to laugh, “Wow. I can’t believe that you agreed to that! And I thought dragons and princesses were supposed to have some class!”

Martina sniffed, “Oh? And how is this different from you and Aimèe offering him a threesome?”

At this point the girls erupted into a bout of pointless bickering for a few minutes, arguing over alleged differences between a threesome and the arrangement before Felìcita of all people stopped it.

She said, “All right people! Let’s stop this before we come to blows over it. Regardless of what you think about who’s doing what, you know that the Knight wouldn’t want us fighting over it? Right?”

There was a small chorus along the terms of “Yes,” or “I guess not.”

Felìcita continued, “Good. Now seeing as that is the case, I just want to repeat what Master Knight told us when he had us set up this arrangement. He said that he cared about us. Furthermore he cared about us enough that he couldn’t bear to break any of our hearts.”

Veila cut in, “Heh. I’ve heard that one before,” as a frozen silence met her words, she hastily added, “Hey! I’m actually reasonably sure that the Knight actually meant it! I’m just saying that I’ve heard that excuse before!”

Felìcita continued, “Right, so he didn’t want to break our hearts by choosing one of us, so he gave us an ultimatum. We could come to a solution by ourselves or he would continue to ignore all of us. And none of us wanted to give up, so we decided to come to an arrangement.”

Veila whistled a low whistle. “Wow. You ladies really fell for him badly, didn’t you?”

“Sure you don’t… Let me fill you in, if your ‘Master Knight’ says ‘Jump,’ you ask ‘How high?’ If ‘Master Knight’ says crawl, you can already taste the dirt. If ‘Master Knight’ says ‘Play second fiddle to a dragoness and a dwarf,’ then… Well you get the picture.”

Surprisingly the next person to speak was Rina, “I’m going to have to stop you right there, criminal scum. Just because you spend your time skulking amongst the worst people in the lands doesn’t mean that everyone is out to use others for their advantage.”

“Oh, look at this. The uptight guardswoman comes to the princess’ defense. Are you already in the arrangement as well or are you just willing pick up whatever scraps are left over seeing as you came last to this little group?”

There was a major pause at this.

Sieghild chuckled, “Now who’s eager to please the Knight?”

Veila spoke next, “I – I – I am sorry, everyone.”

Aimèe pushed further in an almost maternal guiding voice, “Sorry for what?”

Veila sighed, “I’m sorry Martina for implying that you had no class. I’m sorry Sieghild for pushing you to tell us about the armor fitting, although it was a fun story. I’m sorry Felìcita for implying you had no class and that you were desperate to please the Knight. I’m sorry Rina for implying that you were desperate to get anything the Knight would give you. I’m sorry Aimèe for causing a fight. There, everyone happy?”

Aimèe replied in a cheerful voice, “That’s better! Now does anyone have anything they want to say to Veila?”

Rina sighed, “I’m sorry for calling you scum, Veila.”

Aimèe cut in, “Don’t you mean ‘criminal scum?’”

Veila interrupted, “No, the criminal parts fair. I’ll own up to that.”

“Okay then, let me say that I’m sorry for putting you on the spot then Veila.”

“Its okay, Aimèe”

Martina chuckled, “Now that that’s sorted out, for now at least – “

Aimèe cut in “Don’t say that! Who knows, maybe this little peace will last!”

Martina sighed, “Aimèe, I doubt it will last for too long, Sieghild, Felìcita, and I already came to one agreement and we’re still at each other’s throats sometimes.”

Sieghild sighed too, “Aye. I guess I’m still in the arrangement. What about the rest of you ladies?”

There was a silence that lasted several minutes before Aimèe finally spoke. “I guess I’m in. I suppose this isn’t the traditional knightly story…”

Rina chuckled, “Heh. There probably aren’t too many stories like this, are there Aimèe?”

“Oh, you’d be surprised Rina. There are plenty of stories like this, its just that I had to hide from my father to hear him tell them to his friends. He would never knowingly let me listen in to them,” she continued in a lewder voice, “I can tell you some of them later if you want. You know, so you know how they end…”

Rina stammered, “Wha? That – that’s not necessary just yet. I’m still not sure if I want to try sharing Sir Knight…”

Veila snorted, “Come on guardswoman, its not like you have much of a choice.”

Rina sighed, “I guess not, its just… That would be a big step for me… I’m really not comfortable taking it just yet… Can I have some more time to think about it?”

Aimèe responded in a comforting voice, “Don’t worry Rina. I understand, and I’m sure Sir Knight will too. Take all the time you need.”

“Thanks, Aimèe…”

Veila sighed loudly, “Whelp, I guess I’m in. I suppose a six-way isn’t too much more ridiculous than a threesome. Could be fun.”

As I was about to return to the baths, I felt a tap on the shoulder. “Sir, I will tell your story as accurately or inaccurately as you wish throughout the land if you tell me how you managed to pull this together.”

I turned around, and standing there with an awestruck look on his face was Gaël.

I sighed deeply, “Hello again Gaël.”

“Huh? How did you know my –“

“One of the women at the elven tavern said it. I have a decent head for names and faces.”

“Oh, that makes sense. But still… how did you do that? Come on, let me buy you a beer and tell me!”

I sighed, it would be worth it alone just to keep him from spreading lies and exaggerations again like before. “Let me make sure the girls are okay first. Then it’s a deal.”

The women were surprised to find out that I was willing to deal with Gaël, but I explained that he did stay away from Hammerburg when he promised and I could probably trust him to keep his word to some extent. And with that out of the way, I went up to the bar to meet Gaël.

As I sat down, he paid the bartender for two ales and turned to me, “You know, I was surprised to find out that this druid grove had a bar. Didn’t really strike me as typical druid behavior, you know?”

“I know what you mean. I actually looked it up and it turns out that the druids bought this land from a lot of the nearby lords so they could prevent any… conflict over the land. Evidently it cost a fair amount of coin. It also evidently takes a lot of money to maintain the lands, covering the expenses of the druids and rangers for the items they can’t get off the land.”

“So that’s why they rent out the hot springs and have all these accommodations?”

“Yep. In fact we’re not in the heart of the grove. We’re in a small community built on the outskirts of their lands for the express purpose of catering to visitors. That way the druids keep the damage to nature limited and the entire grove gets maintained.”

“Not a bad system. But that’s not what I wanted to talk to you about.”

“No, I suppose it isn’t. Very well, I’ll tell you what I did; though I warn you that it may not be worth your money after all.”

I explained how I got Princess Emile’s letter, how I tried to rescue her only to be rebuffed, how I returned to the tower, met a maid, fought the princess, and actually met Martina socially. I then went on to describe how the maid turned out to be Aimèe and how the Dragonmoot Council sent me on the quest to destroy Isocrates’ Rod. Naturally I glossed over the details of Isocrates’ Rod, too many people knew about that already, but I did explain that I retrieved a magic item that needed to be destroyed. I then told him about how we were heading out to Hammerburg when we were ambushed, and was pleased to see that he evidently felt bad about that little misadventure. I explained how his information helped us find The Rusty Anvil and how I met Siegbert and Sieghild who told me about the Schatten Gilde. I continued to tell how Siegbert and Sieghild joined us and we went on to Albero Città where we met Felìcita, Veila, and Rina and how we fought Mr. Aldric there. Since I didn’t tell him about Isocrates’ Rod, I felt that telling him that Mr. Aldric was Isocrates would only confuse the man. After that I then told him how we headed down to the grove for a relaxing break.

Sorry for the recap, I didn't realize how lengthy it was until it was done.

After I was done with my story, Gaël just looked at me confused. “But wait, that doesn’t tell me how you got all of them to agree to share!”

I sighed, “In truth, I didn’t have a lot to do with it. I simply explained to them that I cared a lot about each of them, and that I couldn’t stand to break any of their hearts by choosing one of them.”

“I’ve tried that before, it didn’t turn out too well…”

“I can’t speak for your attempts, but I meant it when I said it. I suppose that must be what did it; the fact that I genuinely care for each of them. Basically, I was honest with them, I was forthright with them, I didn’t’ lie to them, I didn’t keep secrets from them, and I cared about their feelings and opinions; each of them. Hells, I feel bad about the way this turned out. It feels like I’m… cheating somehow. Each of them deserves someone to care for them as their one-and-only, and I don’t know if I can do that for six women, but I definitely know that I couldn’t stand to break their hearts so this is the best I got.”

When I was finished, Gaël was staring at me with his mouth open in shock, “Are… are you for real? I’ve always heard stories about knights who always tried to do the right thing, but I didn’t think that there was any chance of them actually existing. Are you saying that having six women after you does nothing for you?”

“Of course it does! However it is a guilty pleasure. I can’t stop feeling bad for what’s going on, even as I enjoy it. It’s not right that I made those women share me, they deserve better than that!”

I felt a sharp blow to the back of my head and turned around. Gaël had just slapped me! He sighed, “Listen here Knight, I get that you’re an honorable type, but you should know when to turn it off. I know that you feel that they shouldn’t have to share you, but I was listening in on their conversation a little too. And guess what? They know that too! The fact is that they are still willing to share you! Even that one elf chick who was playing timid; trust me, I can tell. If there was anyone who they cared about even near as much as you, they wouldn’t have stood for the demand to work something out, they would have just moved on.”

He shook his head exasperated, “So just relax for a change, acknowledge that they deserve better, realize that you’re still the best they got, treat them as well as you can, and then just enjoy the fun! You’re women aren’t idiots, they’ve decided that you split six ways is still better then any other man all to themselves so just trust them. There’ that’s my two coppers. Feel any better?”

To my surprise I did, “Yeah actually. I guess that did help a little. I didn’t expect you to be so persuasive, not bad for a traveling archer.”

He smiled, “Actually good Knight, I’m not much of an archer. My real talents are in storytelling. I’m a bit of a traveling bard to tell you the truth.”

“Only the one’s that I told before you were vindicated,” seeing my expression he held up his hands defensively, “Hey! I’m a bard! It’s what we do! If it helps, the ‘Noble Knight who spared my life and came to my rescue’ variety was far more popular!”

I just shook my head and laid it in the palm of my hands, “And I just told you the whole story, didn’t I?”

“Relax! I’ll make it something to be proud of! And I can spread word of your prowess with ladies as well!”

“Please don’t.”

Gaël shrugged with an amused smile, “If you wish. People are going to make their own assumptions when they find out that you’re traveling with six different women though.”

I sighed, “That’s just perfect.”

We shared a few more drinks and swapped our stories. Evidently Gaël became a bard to see the world and to meet interesting people. I told him about my career as a Knight of the Realm. Eventually we came to an agreement that Gaël could tell the story in its entirety, provided that he waits for us to finish our quest. With that settled, I left him to attempt to pick up the barmaid as I left to return to the baths and my own women.

When I got back to the pool, I could see that something was up. The way that the women were talking seemed… almost staged. As I got in, Martina very casually asked me if I had a good talk. As you could imagine, an intense awkward silence was the main response to those words.

Veila of course was insistent that a group was more fun, but was overruled by almost the entire rest of the girls. So I have a fun night to look forward to, even if I had to disappoint the girls by saying that I didn’t think I’d be able to go for a second round with any of them. Fortunately Veila was able to help me explain the… logistics behind “reloading your crossbow” to the less experienced ladies and helpfully suggested that I might take tomorrow off too.

Leaving the ladies to sort the order out amongst themselves, I decided to head back up to the bar to purchase several drinks. I was going to need to stay hydrated tonight evidently…

to be honest, I'd rather have a happy ending, an epilogue of the future (which, given that the Knight/Martina will outlive the others, will be a touch bittersweet) and have it end on a high note.

One of the major reasons people really dislike quests (other than there being far too many) is that too many of them drag on for far too goddamn long and hence outstay their welcome and/or become infested with circlejerkers.

I always wondered why the knights military career never factors in to his character.
Unless he was always in peacetime you would think he would have some sort of issues from some protracted siege or general meat-grinder of a battle he went through.

With regards to trauma, please give my regards to the Afghanistan Veteran that you know. I'm sorry he had to go through that.

However with regards to the story, the Knight wouldn't likely have a problem such as that. Not to diminish your veteran friend's service and feelings about the matter, but the whole childhood/adult line is strongly rooted in modern western culture. In other areas of the world and even in the west's past, the age of adulthood varied and was considerably younger. In some parts of the middle ages, a person could be tried and executed as an adult at as young as seven. Again, I don't mean to diminish the sacrifice and the emotional burden that your veteran friend feels, but this isn't likely to be a problem in a story set in a fantasy version of the middle ages.

I'm working a new low/high fantasy project right now, I'm hoping to start posting soon.

the thing is armor for ground combat lacks some details that make mounted combat a bit harder. But armor for mounted combat serves right for ground combat, although spurs are a bit tricky while using stairs....

Also, I hope the Darves enchanted the armor with feather fall, is a must for dragon riders.

I'll be perfectly honest; I have never liked fully-enclosed armour like that, ESPECIALLY for knights errant. Apart from anything else, it's uncomfy to wear for long periods of time and embellishments like that frankly ridiculous codpiece, simply serve to highlight that it's a show-piece for well-off, landed knights and nobility.

As I'm guessing our knight is un-landed, even if he is of substantial means, he would have need of armour that allows him to move freely and be worn with relative comfort for long periods of time. Obviously nothing as crass as half-plate and chain will do, especially after the recent re-tooling and upgrade (hoping for something truly epic later, as well. Regular magic armour is nice, but a Dragon Knight deserves something truly impressive. Yes, I am going to KEEP calling him that), but full tournament armour is mostly for showing off and providing protection, while worn for relatively short spaces of time. Any re-enactor will tell you how hot and uncomfortable full battle armour, let alone tourney armour, is. Even if you factor in magic, surely it would make more sense to enhance factors (such as comfort, or protection) that already exist, rather than to compensate for shortcomings, by making the effect whole-cloth. Frankly, I'd personally consider Dwarves more into that sort of thing, as showing off their craft as simplicity and quality in one package (Dwarves would love the AK-47), as opposed to having to rely on magic to back up a deficiency in their design.

Naturally, other races may have other ideas. A highly magical race coughDRAGONScough might take pride in having the armour itself be more ornamental, putting their faith in enchantments, over iron/steel/mithril/adamantium/orichalcum, while valuing the latter ones for their mystical properties and beauty.

That's just my opinion however. I've been on a culture creation kick lately.

Make no apologies for it. Some people will hate harem route no matter what. This does not make it inherently good, or bad. Any setting or story can be done badly, or well. All that it requires is to look at it objectively and focus on the story's merits, weighed against its flaws. Some people are unwilling to do that, taking a story at face value. Everyone has something they despise, even if they are otherwise objective. I, for instance, will not even consider reading a story where a character is mind-wiped, brainwashed, hypnotised, mind-raped, or otherwise robbed of agency and free will. Likewise, I have a predisposition towards certain character types and genres, which I try my hardest to set aside and do not always succeed in doing so.

From as objective a standpoint as I can manage, however, this story is just great so far and getting, mostly steadily, better. Make no apologies for the themes, or setting, but only for genuine, literary hiccups, of which there has been exactly one major example, which you acknowledged and seem to be trying to learn from.

Like the others, I do find your writing quite amusing, good sir. My principal question is where you intend to take this from here. It is my sincere hope that now that we have jumped the shark in terms of sexual exploitation of all of the knight's female followers that we can get back to actual story development.

The knight went from reluctant hero to absolute ladies man awfully damned fast. And then there was the idiotic princess who he had to rescue Martina from: she was carried away with passion, too, although more crazy.

Is Isocrates' Rod exerting some type of mind altering effects, where the person carrying(or handling) it becomes more...Amorous, no...passionate? Emotional? Are pheromones involved?
Or is it control. Is the Rod causing the person who carries/wields it to exert a mild control over those who come in contact with him, the more intimate the contact, the stronger the control...
Meh, those are just my ruminations on it...Again, good story so far.
