You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

You found out that Citrine and her husband are going to be at Prince Emilio's party, picked out a stuffed alpaca to give the Wilhelms' baby (and bought another for Marianne), told her about your past, and ate a bunch of turkey legs.

Marianne's just picked out a dress, and now she's getting fitted.

As the Princess heads into the back room with the old seamstress, you walk up to the counter and lean in as casually as you can manage, keeping an open ear for anything strange. While you're not stupid enough to try and go back there with them, you still need to keep on full alert just in case.

After a few minutes, Marianne and the seamstress emerge from the back room, much to your relief. Though the Princess looks slightly annoyed from having had her measurements taken, she's unhurt and that's what matters.

"Alright, this shouldn't take too long," the seamstress says. "I'll get on this right away, so just come back in about two hours and the modifications should be done by then."
"Thank you," Marianne replies.

The two of you then head to the exit, with Marianne breathing a sigh of relief once she finally steps outside.

"Alright, let's get going then."

Marianne takes the lead as you follow her down several blocks and around a few corners, taking care to avoid the sketchier-looking alleys. Just as you breathe a sigh of relief that she's actually making an effort to make your job easier, the two of you are stopped by the sound of a loud crash.

"Watch out!" you shout, holding your arm in front of the Princess just as a man is thrown out of the window of a bar across the street.
"What in the world..." Marianne says, completely surprised.

Immediately afterwards, a larger man jumps through the frame of the shattered window, landing feet-first on top of the man whose body had broken it in the first place.

"HOW DO YA LIKE THAT, YA PIECE A'SHIT!?" he shouts, his voice slurred.

Cracking your knuckles, you run towards the two men as fast as you can, reaching them just as the drunk is pulling back for another punch. Takin quick action before he can swing, you catch his arm and pull him off of his downed quarry.

"The fuck do you think you're doin!?" the drunkard shouts as he scrambles to his feet.
"Just trying to keep you from killing someone," you reply.

Enraged that you would dare to interrupt him, the drunkard swings at you as hard as he can. But unfortunately for him, his attack is nothing compared to the hellish training that you've endured under Arnaud. Easily sidestepping his punch, you kick him square in the stomach and send him crashing into the ground back-first.

Just in time for the city guard to arrive!

"Thanks, we owe you..." a man in a captain's uniform says to you. "...oh hey!"
"Uh, hi?" you reply, unsure who this guy is.
"It's me, Benoit! From a few weeks ago!" he says, extending his hand to you.
"Oh, sorry for not recognizing you at first," you say as you shake his hand.
"Ha, don't worry about it," Benoit says with a chuckle. "We'll take it from here, but thanks again!"

As the City Guard apprehends the drunkard and gets to treating his bloodied victim, you head back to Marianne. She looks -quite- relieved.

Figuring that you might as well, you walk towards the two women and look down at the baby in Marianne's arms. He's kind of funny-looking in that way that newborn babies usually are, but he's still kind of cute...

"Just look at the little guy," Liese says as the baby looks around at the three of you. "Kind of makes me wish I had two..."
"We're not having another baby until that one's old enough to change diapers!" Lorentz says from across the room.
"Aboo! Aboobooboo!" Marianne coos as she pokes the baby's chubby cheeks.
"You can play with him too, you know," Liese says, nudging you with her elbow.
"Uh... okay..." you reply.

"Hello..." you say as you poke the baby's hands with your finger. "Hello, little baby..."

Seeing Lorentz the Second follow your finger with his eyes and struggle to grab it, you find yourself starting to understand why Marianne was looking forward to this so much...

"Hey, little guy..." you poke his cheeks. "...woof," you say as you touch the tip of his nose.
"bpsglpshh" the baby replies as he tries to grab your finger with increased vigor.

Dammit, this is kind of fun... shaking yourself free of the allure of playing with infants, you turn to the Princess.

"Hey, Marie?" you ask.
"What is it?" Marianne replies, not averting her gaze from the baby.
"You want to give them that thing now?"
"Oh... that's right," she says, turning to you. "Could you bring it out for me? As you can see, my hands are full."
"Hm? Bring what out?" Liese asks, confused.
"You'll see," Marianne replies, smiling.

You then reach into the bag from the toystore, finding the one that Marianne picked out for the baby and then hiding it behind you as you head back to them.

"Go ahead," Marianne says.
"Here's a gift for the baby from Marie," you say as you bring out the stuffed alpaca.
"Oh, that's adorable!" Liese giggles. "You see that? Marie and her friend brought you a present!"

You then hold the alpaca up to where the baby will see, and he starts making gurgling noises and trying to grab it with his tiny baby hands.

"Aww, he likes it!" Marianne giggles as she watches the baby do his best to try and get his new toy. "I was worried that it would scare him..."
"Nope, it looks like he has a new best friend," Liese says happily. "Now say 'thank you' to Miss Marie, Lorentz!" she reaches over and waves the baby's arm at the two of you.

Then you get an idea...

"Dancing wisps, gather before me and light my path," you say while focusing on the stuffed alpaca, Script forming behind you. "Sparkle Shine."

As you wave the plush toy around, fuzzy little balls of light start to trail from it, floating for a few seconds before dissipating. Surprised by this new experience, baby Lorentz starts breathing heavily and making loud gurgling noises as he flails his little arms and legs about.

"Using magic to entertain babies, you certainly have you priorities right!" Liese says, laughing.

After about twenty minutes of playing with the baby as Lorentz the First handles the customers who arrive, the baby finally starts getting fussy.

"Whoops, time to say goodbye..." Liese says as she takes the baby back from Marianne. "Better head back upstairs before he starts crying."
"Thanks for letting me hold him," Marianne says, smiling. "And congratulations."
"Thanks, Marie!" she giggles. "Just promise me that you'll let me play with -your- firstborn!" she says, winking at you.
"Th- that's not funny at all!" Mariane whisper-shouts at Liese, trying not to startle the baby. "I have no intention whatsoever to..."

Not even bothering to listen to Marianne's retort, Liese heads back upstairs with the baby.

"You're really good with kids," you say to Marianne as the two of you head to the counter. "I bet you'll make a great mother one day."
"Ugh..." Marianne sighs, "Don't start getting any strange ideas just because of certain assumptions that were made today," she says, glaring at you.
"Wouldn't dream of it," you reply.

"Thanks for bringing the baby down for me," Marianne says to Lorentz.
"Heh, no problem!" Lorentz replies. "Anything to see you two ladies smiing like that,' he says, giving a thumbs-up. "So I take it that you're ready to order?"
"Yes, I'll have two boxes of the usual... and a dozen donuts for him," she points at you with her thumb.
"Alright, be right back with that..."

Lorentz then gets to work filling Marianne's order, ending up filling three boxes in all. After she pays for the pastries, she takes the bags that you were holding so that you can hold them instead.

From there, the two of you make your long trek back to the dress store... fortunately, the carriage is waiting just outside so you're actually able to stow away the pastries before heading back inside to pick up the Princess's dress. After carefully bringing that into the carriage as well, you help Marianne inside, close the door, and the two of you finally start your journey back to the castle.

But naturally, all good things must come to an end... a chill runs down Nicolette's spine as she spots her father in the hallway.

"I see that you're hard at work," Sir Gregory says as he approaches.
"Pretty much, yeah," Nicolette replies, sighing.
"If it gets to be too much, you could always retire... this is far from the only way to make Knight, after all. I know I sure as hell didn't have the patience to do it like this."
"Yeah, well I'm not you."
"But you certainly take after me, though..." Sir Gregory says with a smirk.

Nicolette places a hand on her forehead and sighs deeply.

"Whatever... I'm busy right now, so can you bug me some other time?" Nicolette says as she turns away.
"Yeah, yeah... one thing, though," sir Gregory says.
"What now?" Nicolette stops, sighing again.
"Ariane wants to have dinner with both of us tonight, so try not to have one of your eating contests with Sylvie and Reinhold like you always do.
"Yeah, I figured as much... whatever, I'll be spending the night at home anyways."
"She'll be happy to hear that. Oh yeah, I'd like to see you trying out that dress you bought before we head out... I don't want my daughter to be looking inappropriate in public, after all," he says with a sly grin.
"GOD DAMN IT WHY ARE YOU ALWAYS-" she shouts.

But Sir Gregory doesn't even wait for her to finish yelling at him, walking past her and heading down the halls without a single word.

Taking note of the time, Nicolette goes through the castle a final time, telling the guards to be on alert since the Princess will be coming back within the next few hours. After doing her part as well to make sure that the area around the castle is free of anything suspicious, she heads back inside.

"Oh, Nicolette!" she hears a booming voice say just as she comes through the gate.
"vincent?" she asks, turning to face him. "Uh, good afternoon!"
"And good afternoon to you!" he says, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Were you checking the perimeter just now?"
"Yeah, just making sure that everything's fine for when Marianne gets back," she replies.

"Haha, it's great to see that you're taking your job so seriouly!" Sir Vincent laughs like booming thunder. "Keep it up and I'm sure the King'll make you a Knight!"
"Heh, that's the idea," Nicolette replies.

"Oh yeah... I was meaning to ask you to watch out for Sylvie while you all are out in Marconetti," Sir Vincent says.
"I dunno if she really needs -me- to look after her, but sure," Nicolette replies.
"Can't help being a concerned father, you know..." he laughs. "Anyways, I'll be seeing you around!"
"Yeah, see you later."

With today's work done, Nicolette waves goodbye to Sir vincent and heads to her personal quarters. After changing out of her armor and into a loose-fitting shirt and pants, she grabs her lance and makes her way back outside the castle.

After a few minutes of walking, she finally reaches a familiar clearing, marked by several scarred trees.

"Anyone out here!?" Nicolette calls, just to make sure.

And there's no answer.

Great.

While Nicolette doesn't want to inherit her father's image of being a hair's breadth away from killing everyone who makes her mad, she -is- rather fond of her own reputation of effortlessly being stronger than anyone else in the Royal Guard.

So while she's put plenty of hard work into getting as good as she is now, she can't really let anyone else know about that fact.

After doing a few stretches, Nicolette twirls her lance around a bit and then assumes a low stance. Silently, she spends the next halfhour or so practicing her basic forms, making sure to do them as perfectly as possible. After that's done with, she moves on to different exercises, the wind from which kicking up a veritable storm of fallen leaves.

Nicolette didn't used to put in this much effort... but then Reinhold showed up. Already a bigshot because he won that swordsmanship tournament, he then proceeded to beat her while sparring not once, but TWICE. While he might be the best swordsman around that's under the monster-level of Arnaud and those other guys, that's still no excuse to just accept it... no, she's going to train even harder and kick his ass.

Yeah, those losses just showed Nicolette just how much further she has to go before she can make Knight. The old man's probably right about how sticking to polearms instead of the swords she has natural talent with are holding her back, but fuck that. Grampa's up in heaven looking down on her, and she's going to show him that she hasn't forgotten her promise.

And besides, working under self-imposed limits makes you stronger for it!

At least, that's what she'd like to believe.

Nicolette then kicks a nearby tree, shaking free several leaves. Then, as they fall, she swings her lance countless times in an attempt to slice through each one.

No good.

Trying again several more times, Nicolette doesn't stop until she's completely out of breath and the ground around her is littered with shredded leaves.

"Oh... oh wow..." a voice says from behind a tree.
"Wha- WHO'S THERE!?" Nicolette shouts nervously.
"Umm, sorry for spying on you..." Melanie says as she peeks out from her hiding place.
"Wha- Melanie!? What the hell are you doing out there!?"

"I'm so sorry for interrupting..." Melanie says, bowing as deeply as she can, "I was taking a walk through the forest to clear my mind, and I happened to spot you practicing..."
"Fuckin' hell..." Nicolette grumbles. "Don't worry about it, it's not like you were stalking me or anything," she sighs.
"I'll leave now, so you can get back to your training. Ummm, don't worry, I won't tell anyone that I saw you out here!" Melanie says nervously.
"No, don't worry about it... I was just about to head back to the castle anyways," Nicolette says, stretching her arms. "C'mon, it's getting dark. I'll walk you back to the castle.

The carriage is well on the way to the castle... time to enjoy your donuts. You quickly devour a couple, but then you remember that Marianne -did- buy these for you...

"You want one?" you say as you hold the box out towards her.
"Oh... thank you," Marianne replies, taking one for herself.

The two of you end up finishing off the box of donuts as you ride. With nothing else to do, the Princess turns her attention to the scenery outside the window, eventually drifting off to sleep.

By the time you get back to the castle, the sun is low in the sky. Awakened by the carriage's sudden stop, Marianne exits once the driver opens the door for her. Taking care to not to mess anything up, you pick up the bags and follow the Princess out.

"Could someone bring one of those boxes up to my room later tonight?" Marianne asks a nearby maid.
"Certainly, Princess!" the maid replies.
"And the other box is for the ride to Marconetti... it doesn't need to come up to my room, but please make sure it ends up in whichever carriage we take."
"And what about this dress?"
"That's for the ball..." she says, glancing inside the carraige. "I suppose it can be brought up to my room so that I can try it on a final time before we head out."
"As you wish!"

With a deep bow, the maid scurries off to find someone to help her out with the Princess's requests.

"I have quite a bit of packing to do," Marianne says, turning to you. "After you escort me to my room, you'll be free for the night."

I'm not really talking about getting more comfortable. That's something all the characters have done. I'm talking about changes in opinions and dynamic. In Marie's case, Reinhold went from sort of being bossed around and too intimidated to talk to the princess to almost controlling the entire pace of the relationship and talking to her every chance he got, and now it's seems to be kind of stabilizing into a more equal thing. The way they view and act around each other now is a lot different and it just sort of keeps changing.

"Aside from the dress measurements, that fight that we stumbled across, and... -that-..." Marianne says, sighing, "Yes. Today was rather fun," Marianne replies.
"That's good to hear."
"It's a shame that every day isn't as enjoyable, but I suppose that's life..." she says wistfully. "But anyways, thank you for everything you did for me today."

After a few minutes, the two of you finally make it to the hallway where your rooms are located.

"Well, this is it for tonight," Marianne says as you stop in front of her door. "We'll be leaving tomorrow morning, Melanie will come and tell you our exact departure time, but it will probably be sometime after when we usually have breakfast."
"Alright," you reply.
"We'll be taking two carriages... since Father will be riding with Sir Gregory, I'll leave it up to you to decide the rest of our seating arrngement since it doesn't particularly matter to me. Now if you could hand me my books?"

You then shuffle through the bag, pulling out the two books that you bought before handing the rest to Marianne.

"Thank you," the Princess says as she takes the bag. "...and thank you for this," she mumbles, holding the stuffed alpaca that you bought her. "Goodnight."

With that, Marianne quickly heads into her room before you can even wish her goodnight.

While you did eat that box of donuts with Marianne on the way back here, it's not enough. After dropping your new books off in your room, you head straight for the kitchen, ignoring all other distractions.

For it is time to feed.

As you approach the door, you see that both Nicolette and Sylvie are there waiting for you as usual.

"Hey, Reinhold," Nicolette says, waving to you. "How'd you date with Marianne go?"
"Nicolette!" Sylvie punches her in the arm. "You know that's not funny!"
"Yeah, it was just your usual shopping trip," you reply.
"Meh, lame..." Nicolette replies as she rubs where Sylvie just hit her. "I can't eat much since my Mom's cooking too, but I will hang out with you two until dinner's over."
"Oh yeah, it'll be your last night together for a while," you say.
"Yup, and my old man would kick my ass if I made my Mom cry by ditching..." Nicolette shrugs as she walks into the kitchen.

You concentrate on the bracelet, trying to "order" it to... well, do anything. The first order of business is smoothing the damned thing out so you don't have that constant feel of sandpaper on your wrist, so you decide to try doing that.

"Umm, what are you doing?" Sylvie asks, a puzzled expression on her face.

As you continue to focus your will on the bracelet, its surface starts to ripple a bit before finally settling into the smooth texture that you were trying for.

"Whoa, man," Nicolette says, genuinely impressed. "You made it do that?"
"Yeah, though I'm not exactly sure how," you reply.
"You think you'll be able to get its shape to change entirely once you're used to it?"

All we know is she's limiting herself to polearm use for sentimental reasons until she makes Knight. That doesn't tell us anything about her Grandpa's combat style other than he was really fucking good with a polearm, and the use of magic doesn't prevent that level of proficiency (as seen by Arnaud and his ability to kick our shit).

MGNQ still has a couple of drawfags who throw pictures together at the drop of a hat, I know one and they were busy with university while nicehatguy who only took a name for his pictures actually has been busy with IRL stuff so his speed has dropped hugely as a result
