A long time ago, in a land far, far, away, existed a knight. Steadfast of mind and kind of heart, this knight was much like any other-save for that one particular trait.

You see, this knight was a scholar. But not just any scholar, oh no. here was a knight who has read every book in the king's archives, and could recite them all at the drop of a needle. His knowledge of the world and the stories in it was said to rival those of all the bards, librarians and monks in the kingdom combined.

But what use is this knowledge to a knight?

The knight's meager lands fared well to be sure, and his people loved him. But what of his prowess in combat? The strength of his sword? He could recite the movements and timing of every fighting style, to be sure, but pulling them off was another matter entirely. His blows were weak and powerless, and his sword was better off as a book knife.

Here is a knight who would have been more loved as a peasant. Here is a noble, more fit to be a bard.

Here is a knight who shall save the entire land.

Ah, yes. That is what it was. Sir Wesley Wyndam-Pryce. The knight who travelled between realms, slayed dragons, and faced death itself, all to save the princess and the kingdom.

But that was later.

As of now, his journey has not yet begun.

But it will now.

“Ow!”

a book drops down on your head, interrupting your study in the King's Archives. As you pick up the weighty tome, you look around the quiet, peaceful library. Scholars pace to and fro, pulling out books, repairing spines, and doing whatever it takes to keep this library running. However, no one is remotely near you, and the book is far to heavy to throw.

So where did this book come from? You look up again, and then, you see it.

On the balcony above, you see a huge pile of books, haphazardly stacked and piled. Shaking your head at such a horrible treatment of books, you make your way up the marble stairs to place the book back in that pile. Hopefully, whoever stacked it up is still there, and you can give them a piece of your mind.

As you round the stairs and turn the corner, a surprising sight meets your eye.

It's a young woman, dressed in the robes of a scholar.
>>
>>28067685
How can a scholar treat books this way? You move to lecture her, but as you circle the pile of books to get to here, something else captures your eye.

She's balancing precariously on a ladder, attempting to reach the top of the pile. As the ladder hits the pile, you watch as several more books tumble to the ground far below. It looks like she hasn't noticed yet, but that pile is about to fall over the balcony, possibly taking her with it.

You:

>let her drop. The tomes will break her fall anyhow, and It's a good way to teach her to never stack the books again.
>Run over, and yank the ladder back. You are a knight, after all, and how could you not save a damsel in distress?
>Call to her, and ask her if she needs any help. After all, you are more of a scholar, and you might not be able to reach her in time.
>Other. If you want to do something else, say it.

You run over to the ladder, and miraculously, you manage to reach it and pull it back in time. You step back and yank....

In the wrong direction. You and the ladder tumble into the pile of books, and your ears cry as the sounds of paper tearing and bindings ripping reach your ear. The person on top tumbles off, and lands next to you, irreparably damaging several books in the process.

You immediately to lecture this person, and as words tumble out of your mouth, you wonder why she looks so familiar.

It takes you a moment, but then, it clicks.

This is not just any young woman about your age.

This is the Princess Janalynn, heir to the throne and daughter of the Golden Kingdom.

You instinctively pull back and begin to scrape and bow before her.

“Apologies, your highness! I didn'-mff!”

a warm hand covers your mouth and she glares at you.

“Quiet! I'm not supposed to be here!”

Cautiously, she removes her hand from your mouth, then looks at you questioningly. You nod to show that you will keep your silence, and she turns away from you and inches towards the edge, and peers over the balcony. She looks back and you, and gestures you forward. Creeping up, you peer over as well, and look where she points.
>>
>>28067998
Two guards wearing the crest of the princess are running around, talking to scholars, and making gestures.

From what indistinct voices you hear, they seem to be looking for the Princess. Suddenly, you hear a yell. Looking around, you see a scholar by the pile of books that dropped, calling for the guards, who look up, and immediately begin to rush for the stairs.

You look over at princess, but she's already pulling books from the pile and stuffing them in a bag. She looks up at you.

“Distract them.”

“What?” You say, and she rolls her eyes.

“You've sworn loyalty to me and my kingdom, right? I'm giving you an order. Distract my guards down there so I can escape.” She turns away, and looks around, muttering to herself.

“Where is the Falentius....must have dropped below....curses.”

She looks back at you.

'Well, what are you waiting for? You're the start of all this, so take some responsibility.”

>You go along with her plan. Such is your duty after all.

>"I swore an oath to the realm. Don't make this harder than it needs to be for yourself, Princess."

She glares at you, and turns to run, but you manage to position yourself between her and the exit. Leaning against the door, she tries to move you, but weak as you are, she is even weaker. Exasperated, she turns tail and runs-smack dab into one of the guards.

“Princess! Your father was worried you missed your embroidery less-”

“i don't want to embroider! I want to read!”

“Yes, but the King wants you to embroider, so that's what you have to do, correct?”

She groans, then turns back to you.

“You're going to regret this. Just wait.”

You shrug.

As the guards move away, princess in tow, one of them turns to you.

“Are you attending the banquet tonight, Sir Windham-Pryce? All the kingdom is going to be there.”

You remember why you came here. Every year, the King calls all his vassals, and they give him tribute at the banquet. You arrived with the traditional offering of grain, a gift that is neither too stunning or too cheap. A gift perfect for someone who wishes to slip by, blending in with the averages.

“Of course.” You respond, and they nod and walk away.

You turn back to the pile of books, and notice one by your foot.

It was the one that hit you on the head.

“Falentius's Tales of the Fey,” you read out loud, to no one in particular. Was this the one the princess was looking for?

As you think about it, dozens of scholars walk up, and start to take apart the pile, moving around you.

You decide to:

>Keep the book and read it again. From what you recall, it was just simple fairy tales in here. Why did she want this one so badly?

You decide to take the keep the book with you. Why did she want it so bad? You need to read it and find out.

Throughout the day, you go through it again, but nothing pops up. Just the usual tale of someone whisked away to a faraway land and saving the happy inhabitants in some way or another.

A servant knocks on your door, and you close the book, placing it on your desk.

It's time for the banquet. As you enter the great hall, which was fortunate enough to be a few steps away from your quarters, a variety of sights and scents assault your senses. Troubadours, jugglers, and all sorts are here, and the tables are decked with a variety of foods covered in spices. Elk, grilled pheasant, fresh salmon, and a variety of other foods make you salivate wildly, and you eagerly sit down. Servants mill about you and your compatriots, and you find familiar acquaintances next to you. All of you talk about your lands and families, killing time until the king arrives.

With the blow of a brass trumpet, the hall suddenly silences. A herald struts out dramatically, turns, and stands before the crowd. He pauses, the hollers at the top of his lungs.

“the King has arrived!”

immediately, the doors bust open, and the King Laurent walks in, surrounded by his coterie. The entire hall stands and bows as he glides down the hall, standing as he passes by. As you bend back up, you catch sight of the princess regally striding by.

For a moment, you feel a chill as she glares at you.
>>
>>28068570
Then it passes, and it becomes nothing but a feeling of slight unease. As the herald announces the start of dinner, you immediately begin, and the presentation begins. In no particular order, names are announced, and nobles walk up to present tribute to the king. Some bring faraway fabrics, and others bring beautiful artworks. Many present the fruits of their lands, such as grain or cattle, and the few unlucky bring trinkets or nothing at all, and earn the laughter of the court. Fortunately, they are few and far, and as they pass by, you feel at ease. You're safe, like always. Even if you didn't have a gift, or had a bad one, one of the other nobles would cover for you. The only danger you would face is if you had no gift and went last. There's no way that could happen, right?

Then a servant passes you a note. You open it, and inside, you read those fateful words.

'I told you you would regret not helping me. Your grain has gone to river, and you are going last.'

You look up and across the hall to see the princess staring at you, a slight smirk on her face.

As the nobles pass by, presenting tribute, you feel frozen. What are you going to do? All of your acquaintances have gone up already, and there's no way you could go back to your lands in time. As people come up and the people waiting dwindles, you feel a faint sweat at the back of your neck. Any moment now, the last people are going to be announced. Thee people left, two people left, then...

Only you are left.

“Now, Sir Wesley of the Windham-Pryce Family, come up and present tribute to the King and Princess!”

Eyes turn to you, and you see a servant come up to you for orders.

What do you do?

>tell the court that you had a tribute, but the princess destroyed it.

It's time. Waving away the servant, you walk down the great hall, well aware of all the eyes on you. Whispers start as no tribute seems to follow you, and at last you stand in front of the King. It's now or never. Quickly tossing the note to the King, you bow down, hiding the arm movement with a bow.

“I am sorry, King Laurent. I have failed you, as my tribute was accidentally destroyed during this banquet.”

You Bow once more, and turn to run away, when you hear the king.

“Wait.”

He looks at you, and you see the note peeking out of his hands.

“What of your knowledge, Sir Wesley? Tell us. About us our castles. You have seen them all, and told me of their weaknesses, their strength. What of our blacksmiths and wineries? Tell us the plans you had to improve them.”

it takes you a moment, but as the King gives you a gentle nod, you allow yourself a small grin.

Guess the King is saving you this time.

Immediately, you launch into a speech, detailing every noble's castle, and their weakness. You give out plans for improved wineries and farms, never stopping. you tell everything that the nobles could do to improve the kingdom, and finally at last, when you've realised you've been standing and talking for the past half-hour, you look at the king.

The king claps.
>>
>>28069107
You look up, slightly awestruck, and look around. The crowd doesn't know what's going on either, but they too, join in, and soon, the entire hall is clapping for you.

“Wonderful.” the king booms, and you nod.

“Sir Wesley Windham-Pryce, you have shown us what it means for knowledge to be a tool. I knew, that when you were first knighted, and asked for keys for the archives, that you would prove my wise choices.”

He turns to the crowd. “Sir Windham-Pryce, is not tallest, and certainly not the strongest.” That gains a few laughs from the crowd, and you blush slightly.

“But he is smart. Honest. And he is true to himself. For this, I hereby declare Sir Wesley to be a the Royal Architect, in charge of rebuilding and improving our kingdom.”

loyal protector to the princess, and captain of her guard.”

Wait, what? The Royal Architect? That position was forgotten long ago, lumped in with the scholars. And now, the King is bringing it back? For you? You cheer.

Then you hear the next words.
“In addition, he shall be loyal protector to the princess, and captain of her guard, to better teach our next ruler how to run a kingdom.

As the crowd applauds, you scream internally. This isn't what you wanted. Glancing over at the princess, you feel her eyes burrow into yours.

Neither of you wanted this.

So as you bow before the King and kiss his ring, you have only one question.

How did this happen?
>>
>>28069129

After the banquet you retreated to the Archives. At night, the place is empty, save for a few neophytes who patrol the halls and keep the rooms lit. You walk through the halls, pulling out various titles that grab you. Sure, you've read them all, but some books are just that good. As you take them and gently deposit them in a cart, you turn the corner, and bump into a familiar face. As books tumble to the ground, you watch as she picks them up.

Princess Janalynn.

She glares at you as you watch her, and you return the favor.

“What are you doing here?” She states, and you roll your eyes.

“there's a reason why I have a key to this place. I know more about this place than the scholars. What are you doing here?”

“I'm here to read, you fool. Don't think because you escaped the wrath of the court and become one of my guards means you've made everything up with me. I aim to get you fired as soon as I can. Now, go away, and leave me in peace.” She snaps, and angrily stalks away from you.

As she walks away, you noticed a book in your cart that wasn't there before. You pick it and flip through it.

More fairy tales. What is this girl's fascination with them?

You decide to:

"Thanks." She murmurs, before looking away.

It's awkward now. You need to break the sil-

“Why are you so interested in fairy tales?”

The question pops out of your mouth before you realize it, and you cringe.

The princess is probably going to yell at you, insult you, or both. You brace for the storm.

Instead, she leans back in the chair, and looks skyward.

“Because I want to escape.”

“What?” You venture, and she looks to the side.

“I wouldn't expect you to understand. You're a knight, and get to go on all sorts of adventures. But me? I'm stuck in the castle, learning things I don't want, becoming things I never wanted to be. In the stories it's always the King and Queens who are the bad ones. Oppressing those below, starting wars they never want....I want those below me to be happy. But if I become Queen, someone, somewhere, is going to suffer. And I've decided that I don't want that. To be responsible. I I can, I want to make others happy. So I'll let someone else take the throne, and I'll stay in my tower, reading books, never bringing harm to anyone.”

As her heavy words hover in the air, you consider your options.

you talk to her and console her. It's a small gesture of kindness, but it's enough to break the ice between you two.

You settle in the chair across from her, and begin reading. As the night grows on and om, the two of move the chairs close and closes as the lanterns dim, saving the oil. It's so nice here. And as the words on the page lure with exhaustion, slowly but surely, you fall asleep.

A large thump wakes you up, and you jump in your chair.

It's morning. A scholar has moved next to you with a ladder, grabbing books on high shelves for perusal, and move about, ignoring your familiar presence.

No Princess. Guess she went up to her room. Grabbing the books left on the table, you find one open to a tale about some cowardly knight and a princess, who fell in love.

You close it hastily, and hand it to one of the scholars.

You make your way across the castle, when suddenly, you hear the sound of the alarm trumpet.

You need to protect the princess, who is the priority target for the dragon. But you need armor. calling servants to fetch your suit, you hastily don it on, and rush up to her room, you think of how to bring the dragon down. Chain ballistas to stop it from flying. Attacking the back so when it rears up, you can target the soft underside, attacking between the scales.

Arriving at the Princess's room, you throw the door open.

“Princess! Stay back!” Darting to the window, you yell orders to the people below.

“Get the chain ballista ready, and stay away from its front! Use long attacks, and aim carefully!”

You turn to the princess. “There's a dragon out there. Princess. I need you to stay here, where its safe.”

“Bu-” She says, and you interrupt her.

“No buts.”
You look outside, and watch the battle. The chain ballista are firing, but the dragon is weaving in and out of range. You close your eyes, hoping for a miracle....

You get it. One of the ballistas go off, piercing the dragon's wing. It shrieks and falls-right for the tower.

“Look out!” you dash for the princess, and attempt to shield her with your body. As the tower crumbles below your feet, you feel the two of you fall.

You hit your head, and the world goes black.

Burning.

Something's burning.

You wake up the smell of smoke and fire.

What happened?

The castle has been torn apart...and you're lying underneath a mess of cobblestone.

Memories hit you like a brick. A dragon, the chain ballista. You look around, and spot the Princess, standing in the courtyard, surrounded by fire and broken spears. A circle of fire is around her and the dragon, and there seems to be no escape.

The dragon approaches Janalynn, and you call out to her. “Run!” You yell, and you attempt to pull yourself out. You need to save her.
>>
>>28070005
So why isn't she running. Instead, she turns to you, an odd grin on her face. “Why? He's perfectly safe! Look!”

Extending her hand, she walks towards the dragon. It doesn't bite or breathe fire on her. Instead, it nuzzles her hand.

What is going on?

The princess gets close to the dragon, whispering indistinct words, and it nods. Lowering its neck, she gets on top of it, as if it were a horse.

“Wesley, I'm sorry.” She says, tears slightly filling her eyes. “But...this dragon is here, to take me away to the lands I've dreamed of. Can't you see, Wesley? There's nothing I want here. But there...i can make people happy.”

you see the dragon tense its muscles. Here is where the world is decided. You can't let her but...how can you fight a dragon?

The sands of time are falling. You:

>Let the dragon fly away. There's no way you can fight it.
>Fight it. She can't just run away from her problems.

You can't fight it.

But you can talk to her.

"Princess... Did you just somehow make a deal... to go with a dragon...willingly... Dragons, creatures known for desiring to kidnap and hold in capture princesses for who knows what purpose?"

She nods slowly, and you press your point.

“So, then, why do you trust him?”

She speaks slowly. “Do you remember the tale of the Knight Dragon?”

It's an old tale, but you remember it well. A dragon who rebelled against his kind, and fought to save maidens and vctims from his kin. Though he died in battle, his actions moved the fey to tears, and they took his spirit into their world in order for him to live. It is said that his spirit lives on, saving those in danger.

You recite you know to her, and she nods happily.

“Yes. I was in trouble, and he is here to save me.”

you try and push the point once more. “"Princess...I do not know what honeyed words the dragon has said to you. But please, listen! It not going to take you to your dreamworld, your dreamland! It's not the way this world works...I know that myself. Life isn't always like the tales one reads in stories. Please...Don't heed this dragon's words! It will not do what you believe it will do! How are you so sure this is the dragon of legend, and not just some trick?”

Your words go into your plea, but she smiles sadly.

“The crest on his head. Goodbye, Wesley.”

You look at the dragon once more, and see that small symbol on his head. The mark of the Knight Dragon.
>>
>>28070352

It's no use. You fall to your knees. You cannot convince her.

With a mighty flap of its wings, the dragon shakes loose the chain in its wing and blows you away. As it pushes itself skyward, the last thing you see in Princess Janalynn's face.

Crying.

The men move to attack the dragon, but to no avail. Slowly but surely, the dragon disappears over the horizon.

And you?

You've failed. Dropping your sword, you head to the archives. The only safe place you can think of.

But even that is destroyed. The roof of the archives have fallen in, and the shelves are in disarray. Books are scattered and burnt, and there's a crowd of scholars?

What? You move into the crowd, and see what caught their attention.

A gaping hole in the floor has revealed a giant cavern underneath, filled with books. Piled higher than the castle, there must be hundreds of thousands of books in there, at least!

A scholar nudges you, and hands you rope.

“Would you like to go down there, sir? We're in quite a fix, but this is a discovery worth putting repairs on hold for.

Grabbing the rope, you drop into the immense caverns, and look around. Around you are massive towers of books. Picking one up off the ground, you flip through it.

No use. It's in some foreign language you don't understand.

What else is down here? Holding a lantern high, you peer around.

Then, you see it.

On top of the largest pile of books, lies a pedestal.

You don't know what's there.

But you need to find out.

Scrambling upwards, you push yourself to the pedestal, and find upon it a simple brown book.

And open it.

A blinding white fills your eyes, and for a moment, you feel erased.

Then a question is asked of you.

'do you want to save the princess?'

You know the answer.

'Yes.'

Everything goes black.
>>
>>28070562

She doesn't. Instead, she turns to you, an odd grin on her face. “Why? He's perfectly safe! Look!”

Extending her hand, she walks towards the dragon. It doesn't bite or breathe fire on her. Instead, it nuzzles her hand.

What is going on?

Wait? What's going on? This has all happened before! You know what's going to happen next, the princess is going to approach the dragon, and then she'll say to you-

Something tells you to look to your side. You see it there.

The book.

Only, there's there's a sword handle somehow sticking out of it.

This wasn't here before. What's happening?

A voice whispers to you.

'how did the knight dragon die?'

You know the answer. He fell to a poisoned sword.

Is this the sword in front of you?

You need to stop her.

And you will do anything to do it.

Grabbing the book, you flip it open, and grab the sword hilt, and pull. A gale unleashes around you, slicing away the ring of fire.

You can feel it. In your hand, is a poisoned sword. A cold grey, you can see the wickedly sharp edge.

“Princess Janalynn...” You mutter...

“I will save you!” As you swing the sword, you hear a terrible shake in the air, and the dragon tenses, then roars at you.

You see the princess's face dumbstruck face, and grit your teeth.

You need to stop her, on way or another.

Sword in hand, you charge towards the dragon.

It flaps its wings, attempting to repel you with a gust, but you slice through with the blade, Ducking underneath a swung claw, you jump over the tail swung at you and stab the sword into the dragon' side. You feel lighter. Stronger. Faster. Dodging the bite sent in your direction, you hack at the neck, and jump back from the massive claw.

The dragons shrieks in agony, and you can see the sparks come out of it's mouth

it's about to breathe fire.

Throwing yourself to the side, you, stab the underbelly, and jump, grabbing the dragon's fang and pulling yourself into its mouth. Your blade darts ahead, and your tear through the dragon with a massive swing, cleaving it in twain. As blood paints the field a beautiful red, you turn back to Janalynn. She's crying.

You move to her, but she pushes you back.

'Stay away!” She cries, and as she does so, a book drops from her hands.

It's a strange book. It almost looks like it's made out of emerald. You move to grab it and hand it to her, but she snatches it away.

“You..you can't stop me! Not now! I'm so close!” As she speaks, her book glows, and a blinding white fills the air Awestruck, you watch as the dragon somehow manages heal itself, muscle and sinew knotting together, scales regrowing in patterns. The light suddenly disappears, and once more, the Knight Dragon stands before you.

This wasn't in the legend.

How can you kill this one? Doubt fills you, but your risk it all and swing your sword.

Then the unexpected happens.

The sword shatters.

The dragon roars at you, and flies away, leaving you with a broken sword that turns into sand and flies away.

She's gone once more.

What's happening?

You need answers, and you know where to go.

Running into the archives, you call for some rope.

Once more, you stare down that hole. Only....

“Nothing's down there, sir. Just an empty room. Probably something the architects forgot about.”

What's happened. There used to be a cavern down there.

Now? A small, bricked empty room.

You need to know.

You jump down, and look around.

The walls are flat and bare. You pull out the book, and flip through the pages.

Nothin-

hold on. There's text. You flip back, and find a sentence on the page.

'i'm sorry.'
>>
>>28071250
“Sorry for what?” you say out loud, and the text changes.

'sorry you could not save her again. The other is too strong.'

'Other?'

'The book she used.'

the book? Wait...you remember the crystal book she held. When she used it, the dragon healed almost instantly. You wrack your head. You've heard this story before.

You've got it. “That's it. The Book of Creation, and the Book of Destruction.” You say out loud. “Created long ago by the gods, one can call and create any being it desires, and the other can bring about the death of anything else. Are you saying, that she has one, and I have the other?”

The text changes once more.

'correct. Though we could not kill the knight dragon, for her choice and actions were much stronger than yours.'

”Explain.” You say.

'there has been no myth attached to the sword that killed the legendary knight dragon. you knew it was like any other weapon. so, after she revived the dragon, your belief in the effectiveness of the weapon fell. But she never gave up on the knight dragon. With her will, the dragon outmatched and destroyed your weapon.'

It makes since. But another question hangs on your mind.

“Wait, what about this time travel?”

'you know as well as I do the legend of the books. found together, held together, destroyed together.' As soon as one appears, the other must show and reveal itself as well. This law takes priority over everything else in the universe. So as long as she uses her book, so will you. And the only way for them to be destroyed is together.'

You take what the book says in.

then a scholar interrupts your thoughts.

“excuse me sire, the king wants to see you.”

You:

>go and visit the king.

"Not now." You say, waving the servant away.

“I need to save the princess.”

Pulling yourself out of the hole, you walk outside the archives and whistle. Your horse trots by, and you leap onto it and send it galloping out of the castle gates.

It was a long time ago, but you remember the alleged path to get to the land of the fey. Beyond shifting sands and mountains to the stars, beyond an endless plain and forest, lies a small, stone gate to a valley. Pass through, and you'll find yourself in a land where few tears are shed, and joy rules the day. You're not sure where to start, but the deserts outside the kingdom may be the way. You don't know how long it will take you, but you will get there, eventually.

'there is another, faster way.' A voice speaks in your head, and you immediately recognize is as that of the book.

'when blood of beast flying high mingles with that down below, another path to the fey will show. When a kingdom new invades kingdom gone, that new path shall be drawn. At last, when a king is put into slumber eternal and deep, the gate shall be open and at the invader, all fey shall weep.

“if it means saving her, I'd take this entire kingdom, if I have to.” You say. “tell me, where can I find the beasts?”

“the beasts below wander underneath the deserts. And the beasts above are the dragons. Spill their lifeblood, and you shall know the next part.

“Onwards, then.” You say, and spur your horse, towards the southern sands.

Your journey is long and arduous, taking you far beyond any trace of civilization. You leave your horse when the terrain gets rough, and find yourself a drifter in the world, location unknown.

Finally, after going through dry prairies and flatlands, you find yourself in the desert.

The sands stretch endlessly, and you begin your walk. Hours and minutes lose meaning, and soon, you forget how many days its been.

Then you see it. A rocky outcrop in the sand, sticks up, the only feature you've seen in this entire desert.

Running for it, you find yourself staring at the mouth of a cave. Inside, you can hear a deep and heavy breathing. You place your hand on the book, and feel comfort.
>>
>>28072115
Whatever's inside, the book should help you kill it.

You step inside the tunnel, and continue along the deep, dark path. After hours, or days even, of walking, you find yourself in a huge cavern.

In front of you is a huge stone statue, slowly shaping some clay.

It pauses, perhaps noticing your footsteps, and looks up.

“I HAVE NOT RECEIVED A VISITOR HERE IN MILLENNIA. WHAT IS YOUR PURPOSE HERE? IF YOU ARE LOST, I CAN RETURN YOU TO THE LANDS FROM WHENCE YOU CAME.”

A voice whispers inside your head.

'this is the creature you need to kill. I have provided the weapon needed.'

Touching inside the book, you flip it open, and what you see makes you pause.

Sticking out of the book is a the first sword. A simple piece of iron, it is inelegant, and crude. But the blows it makes will reverbate throughout history.

If that is the case, then this must be...

“The Shaper.” You mutter under your breath.

“I need to get to the lands of the fey.” You say, calling out to the giant statue. “Can you take me there?”

“THE LANDS OF FEY?......HMMMM.” the giant statue stops his shaping of the clay, the look at you, his stone face betraying nothing.
“DO YOU KNOW WHAT THOSE LANDS ARE?”

You admit, that you don't know. It's just the place where so many stories seem to take place.

“IT IS THE LAND THAT IS SHAPED AND BORN BY THE BREAKING OF THIS ONE. ALL THOSE TALES, THOSE DREAMS AND STORIES, ARE THINGS THAT CANNOT EXIST HERE, SO THEY EXIST THERE. NO HUNGER, NO POOR. NO ONE SAD OR UNFORTUNATE.”

“So, can you get me there?”

The giant pauses.

“I CAN. AND I HAVE.”

“What do you mean?”

the giant picks up the clay, and squeezes it in his hands, pulling it apart, shaping a massive hammer.

“THAT ANSWER LIES WITH MY DYING BREATH, BOY. NOW, COME, AND GET WHAT YOU CAME HERE FOR!” bellowing at the top of his lungs, you feel a mighty gale emit from his mouth. Grabbing the hammer he shaped, he swings it against the ground, causing the earth to tremble.

The giant stomps his foot against the ground, and the fissures erupt below you. Grasping your sword, you take a firm grip. Now, the Shaper shall be undone. Magic swirls around you, and your feet launch against the ground. Surging forward, you effortlessly dodge the waves of earth sent your way, and jump, a piercing blaze against the steadfast earth.

As your aim your sword, he swing his hammer, and for a moment, eternity and timelessness collide.

Then something shatters, and you tear through the giant with a swift thrust. As the earth rumbles you turn to him.

“Now tell me.”

the giant gasps in agony, then speaks. “YOU...ARE WHY YOU EXIST, AND WHY SHE RAN. BECAUSE OF THIS, YOU HAVE CREATED THAT LAND SHE DREAMT OF...AND WHY YOU MUST CONTINUE DOWN THIS PATH. DO NOT....BREAK THE CIRCLE....”

The giant moans softly, and you notice a single drop of water come from his core. Moving forward, You catch it with the sword blade, and it runs down, before softly plopping on your hand.

Then the ground shakes violently, and you look around.

“What's happening?”

'you have destroyed the lands. Soon, there shall be nothing left but the path to the skies. Get out of this place.'

As the book speaks to you, you see a tunnel, and dive for it. Pumping your legs, you dash down, ground crumbling behind your step. Finally, you see the light, and hurl yourself towards it.

You find yourself on a mountaintop, surrounded by a misty breeze. Rocky peaks show all around you, and it would be a beautiful sight-were it not for the dragon standing over you.

A murky black, this dragon looks like something between this world and another, fading in and out.

“And what are you here for, human? I who am the source of all unity in the world, wish to know what has made you struggle so much.”

As the dragon speaks, you feel the book produce something else. Reaching for it, you find yourself holding a sword that has two blades spiraling around each other.

So, if this is the Dragon of Unity, then..

“that is the Blade of Conflict!” the dragon hisses at you. “tell me, why should I let you speak when you carry the bane of my existence?”

Throwing yourself to the side, you hack away at is claw, but that misty black fog surrounding it seems to take all the impacts. As the dragon retaliates once again, you catch a glimpse of white on it's underbelly.

That's got to be a weak point. Charging up the dragon, you run up and up, launching yourself into the sky. The dragon launches itself at you, and you angle downwards, deflecting off its jaw and onto its belly. You wind up, and swing with your sword at the white mist...but to no avail. Once, twice...the skin refuses to break.

You can't let it end here.

Grabbing the book, you pull out another sword, and begin hacking furiously. Your blows land faster than the eye can see, forcing the mist away with gale winds, until you see skin. Clasping the swords together, you raise up, and drive the swords into the skin. Your reward is a thick smoke rushing out of the dragon, until nothing, not even the mists are left.

As the dragon writhe and falls, you watch as the land around you starts to form. The uniform mountains sink and rise, shaping the land, and water floods in creating he ocean.

'you have just made it so a new world could be born.'

The book says, and you nod. Gone is unity, and now, distinction. From the mountain, time flows by swiftly, and you watch creatures appear, and exist.

But something's not right.

“This isn't how history's supposed to go. Where are the Mearan tribes? Their entire civilization? The founding culture for our world today?”

'they, and you, are from a kingdom long gone. and now, this new one comes. This is the path you must take. Destroy their entire culture, so that the fey may be born.'

How long have you waited? And what for?

Soon, you noticed them taking trips into your mountains.

Tonight, you woke up with a spear at your throat.

One of them had arrived at the cave you waited in, and snuck in silently. Spear pressed to your throat, he's pressing hard, a savage grin on his face.

Many died that night, and soon, you watched the kingdom crumble. Their pet dragons lost themselves in the caves and mountains, and their deformed became goblins and trolls. The few that were left scattered, developing in remote lands, forming kingdoms that were a pale imitation of their first. The people, cloistered in their small lives, became happy. With the boundaries strictly defined, and a need for all people, little plagued the land, save for the occasional abduction

Here at last, was a land fraught with danger, yet safe for those who wished it. Fantastical beasts traveled far and wide, creating a chance for heroes and might. Here was a land where the stories were true.

But it was missing something. Watching the lands, you noticed something that would destroy all those creatures.

A king. Brave and kind, he was rallying the troops, aiming to wade across the land and slay those whon endangered the world.

If he lives, the stories will fade back into books.
If he dies, the land will become that mystical land of the fey.

You yourself rode in, and chased that King down. Valiant and bold as his army was, they were no match for you and the book. Deep in the heart of the forest, you shattered the remnants of his army, and stabbed the king in the heart.

Now, at long last, the land she dreamed of was complete. No one ruler, mystical and fantastical beasts...

Here is the land that was the cause of all your troubles.

The land of the fey.

As the kingdom falls without a king, you, in your mountain, sit. And wait.

Then, you spot it. Out on the horizon, you see a familiar dragon swoop in.

And who else would be on its back but Princess Janalynn?

It's what you've waited for all this time.

You:

It's time. Fastening your beaten, worn armor, you move to catch up to her.

Riding your horse swiftly, you catch up with her on a riverbank.

There she is.

Her feet gently touch the ground as she dismounts, the dragon, and she looks around.

It's time.

You emerge from the bushes on the other side of the river.

“I have been waiting for this a long time, Princess.”

She looks up, and screams. Rapidly, she mounts the dragon once more, and takes off into the sky. Cursing your luck, you jump onto the horse once more, and give chase. As the dragon touches down in a town, you rush in, and take off your helmet.

“Princess. It is me.”

“I don't know you, Dark Lord, but I recognize your face! Begone, Or I'll sic m dragon upon you!”

Dark Lord? What is she talk-you catch sight of yourself in the mirror.

Your face.

It's changed. Gone are your cheeks and lustrous hair. What stares back at you is a gaunt man, with a cold look in his eyes, his skin pale from wearing armor so much.

The face of the Dark Lord, who threatens to destroy all of the Land of Fey.

“Really?”

Grabbing the book, you draw the poisoned sword once more, and slice the dragon in half. Before she can react, you take her in your arms, and whisk her away to the mountains.

She struggles.

But the pain is nothing compared to what you felt when she could no longer recognize you.

As you take her to the mountain and sit her down, she begins to speak.

“You can't win, you know! Any moment now, a knight is going to swoop in and rescue me. And you'll be gone.”

You decide to entertain her.

“Allow me to tell you who I am.” You turn towards the princess.

“Long ago, far back in the past, I served a princess. Our time together was short, but in that time, I grew to love her. One day, a dragon arrived, and took her to lands far away.”

“I chased after her. Through the darkest catacombs and highest mountains, I gave chase. Because I loved her. With my sword, nothing could stand in my way. Dragons, gods, even fell before my blade. I changed civilizations, and altered lives. Armies fell before me, and kingdoms crumbled. And now, princess. Here you are. You are not the woman who loves, me, nor shall you ever be.”

You look at her, at the princess you once loved. The one who cannot even stand the sight of you now.

“But you remind me of her, that night. I know Wesley is here already. And if he truly loves you, he will come.”

You turn away from her. You know the ending. How could you not? You are at it.

“Watch as he does not.”

With that, you throw her in a cage, and lock the door.

“He will.” A voice sounds behind you, and you look at the princess.

“I know he will come. It doesn't matter how far he will have to travel, or how much he will endure. Because my Wesley is noble. Kind-hearted. He will do what it takes to save me, and find a way to do it without endangering anyone else. Could you say the same? Then man you are now...not even your love would look upon you with kind eyes.” as she speaks, the green crystal book glows with a soft light.

“Wesley...save me!”

With a soft hum, the book fills the room with bright light. You cover your eyes, and yet you can still see the flash.

A voice interrupts your silence.
>>
>>28074744

Your voice.

“Princess Janalynne, I'm here.” Turning towards the entrance you see yourself, holding sword and shield.

“I've walked far and long, princess. But I never lost sight of you, or your dream. I'll take you back to the kingdom, and together, we'll form an age without suffering or war.”

You watch as you ready your sword.

“Now, face me, Dark Lord!”

Here stands a younger version of you.

A naïve verson of you.

A kinder version of you.

You:

>Let him strike you down. This is how it ends, isn't it? With the hero rescuing the princess.

“"I know your every move child, I am stronger, than you faster and have seen more battle than you have lived life. Now, specter of my past, die!"

You draw your side, and the two of you charge.

The battle is decided in an an instant. His sword rakes across your worn armor, piercing your flesh and your blood spills to the ground. As you drop to your knees, you turn and look at your younger self.

You look so strong...so righteous....where did you go wrong? You collapse to the ground, and raise your hands.

Indeed. You went wrong, far far away. The princess was right to spurn you now. Could she love the one who killed gods and people?

No.

As the lifeblood trickles out of you, you allow yourself a weary grin.

Your tale ends now. You look at the book, which lies silently beside you.

Wait. Did this mean the younger you never had this book? You look again.

None.

Then truly, it was his own strength.

You smile.

Then fade away.

“What was that!”

You tear yourself from the book, and look around.

You're still in the giant caverns below the archives.

What did you just see?

Wait. The book provided answers in the dream...so...You look around. There is no book?

Then the princess is truly gone!

You climb back up, and one of the servants looks at you.

“What are you doing?”

You say:

With those words, you take off towards the countryside.

You don't know what those dreams were, but they are a guide. Following those traces of memories, you hike across the land, going after that outcrop in the desert. Though sand pelts your face and scratches your armor, you continue. Enduring all, for her.

At long last, you find yourself in a familiar cavern.

A giant statue stands in front of you.

“Shaper, help me!”

The statue turns to you, and puts down the clay he was holding.

“YOU KNOW ME? THEN...YOU ARE HERE TO KILL ME ONCE MORE.” He readies the clay, but you hold shake your head.

“No. before, in a world not our own, I may have. But since, I have seen that world created, there must be a path to it somewhere. Can you get me to the mountain where the Dragon of Unity lives?”

“YES. BUT BE WARNED, IT IS A ONE WAY TRIP.”

“I understand.” You reply, and the statue points down a hole in the wall. Waving thanks, you continue, until you find yourself before a familiar dragon.

“And what are you here for, human? I who am the source of all unity in the world, wish to know what has made you struggle so much. “

You tell the dragon your story.
>>
>>28075323

It nods once. “Then, you wish to venture to this land of fey. Since this is the land of unity, without distinction, one moment may came after as easily as the next. After you, another will arrive, and slay me, creating those lands.”

You nod, and the dragon. Looks at you with questioning eyes. Very well. Enter my core, and when he kills me, you shall be released into that world, coming into being when you are needed.

You raise your hand, and touch the mist surrounding it. Instantly you find yourself...separated. You watch, impassively, as the other you kills the dragon, releasing you into the world. You watch civilization grow, and watch yourself spread chaos at long last. Then, you see it.

A dragon in the sky, with the Princess on its back.

You focus, and your body manages to pull together, sliding into existence.

Running towards the town, you see from a distance as the other you kidnaps the princess. Grabbing a horse from an awestruck presence, you give chase.

You're so close to closing the circle. You're so close to saving her.

At Long last, you find yourself before the dark lord.

You know what to do, uttering your cry, and drawing your sword.

He does the same.

It's all or nothing.

You rush at your other self, sword in hand, and swing.

The two of you pass each other, and for a moment, the world stands still.

Then, your other self collapses, and you rush towards the princess.

“Are you alright?” You ask, and she nods happily, throwing her arms around you.

That warm presence eases your mind, and you relax.

“Lets go home.” You say, and she nods, tears in her eyes.

“Wesley...you were right. I shouldn't run from my dreams. I realized that on my way over here. But...I don't know how to go back.”

“You have that book, right?” She looks at you questioningly.

“How did you know?” You shrug.

“I know everything. Just imagine home, exactly how it was.”

As you speak, she picks up the book, and it glows. The light grows blinding, then, all of a sudden, it stops.

You open your eyes.

This is certainly not the kingdom.

Where are you? You find yourself in an empty cavern, with two books in front of you.

Her emerald book and the brown one you once held.
>>
>>28075785
“What's happening?”

'we do not have enough to make a new world.'

“Explain.”

'the book of destruction provides energy for the book of creation. By eliminating something in this world, we can use it surmise and make the new object. but it is imperfect. because we do not know everything, some energy is used to gain the information we need.'

“So, it's not a one to one ratio of conversion.”

'correct.'

“What if I could provide you with some of this information?”

'how so?'

You point to your head. “I have the entire king's archives up here. Without, you could find out a lot of things.

'then, write. We will give you the script of the ancients, that you may write it down more efficently.'

a pen and a pile of books are placed in front of you, and a familiar looking script.

You recognize it, from the books in the giant cavern. You look around. Then, this is where the archives will be built.

It doesn't matter now. For her, you need to write, and rebuild the world.

You are the royal architect, after all.

You take up the pen, and begin.

Then, a long time later, you finish.

“Is that enough?”

'almost. We cannot be exact.'

'What do you mean?”

“the dragon. since it was born of the book, we cannot it recreate it, for it will start the cycle over once more. nor can we delete the event, for it is why everything has changed. instead, we will replace it with a similar one. While it is not magical, it is still very deadly having deceived the princess.we have done all we can. from this point on, your and her future depends on the outcome of that battle.”

“I understand. Thank you.”

With that, the books glow together, and a white flash blinds you.
>>
>>28075819

Burning.

Something's burning.

You wake up the smell of smoke and fire.

You've returned to that time once more

The castle has been torn apart...and you're lying underneath a mess of cobblestone.

Memories hit you like a brick. A dragon, the chain ballista. The deal with the books. You look around, and spot the Princess, standing in the courtyard, surrounded by fire and broken spears. A circle of fire is around her and the dragon, and there seems to be no escape.

You:

There's no time for words. As she reaches her hand towards the dragon, you see the predatory look in its eye as it gets ready to pounce.

It opens its mouth...and you see the sparks.

You dash forward, blazing through the flames, and stab the dragon in the neck, a second before it launches a flame that would have roasted the princess.

“get back! It's here to eat you!” you bellow, and position yourself between the princess and the dragon.

You're going to stand and fight. Readying your sword and shield, you charge once more.

Only to get slapped aside by the tail.
Rolling to your feet, you pick up your sword, and hold it up.

When did it get so heavy?

The dragon swings at you, and you clumsily bat away the attack. It spins once more, and you barely dodge it. Seeing an opening, you dive for the mouth-only for the dragon to grab your sword with its teeth, and crush it to splinters. It rears its head, and you look back at the princess.

No time for regrets.

The dragon thrusts with its claw, and you hold your body up to shield her. You close your eyes, waiting for that final blow.

It thursts...then a white light pierces the air.

There's no impact.

Instead, you find yourself holding an emerald book, catching the dragon's claw neatly. A voice speaks to you.

'we are sorry we could not recreate your world perfectly. let me assist you one last time, as an apology..'

'and i as well.' You look and spot a brown book, hovering in place, a sword sticking out.

You grin, and grab the sword. Out comes an beautifully simple and elegant sword, perfectly balanced for your hand.

Holding them both, you charge at the dragon once more.

Diving in, you use the book as a shield, deflecting blows and swings from the dragon. Your sword launches precise slashes, and slowly, you wear the dragon down. Jumping on top of it, you stab it in the back, and it shrieks and pumps its wings attempting to get away.

You won't let it. Clambering up its back, you stab it once, between the eyes, then circle around its neck, stabbing your sword in the soft underparts. It cuts eagerly, and as you fall, you watch the sword slice the dragon's belly open. As it struggles to stay aloft, you move back on top, and cling for dear life as it futilely struggles against gravity. It soon plummets, and you ride it as it skids across the castle grounds.

Slowly it comes to a stop in front of the archives, and as its no bumps against the door, you step off, and look around.

The princess is safe. That's all that matters, right? You see her rushing towards you, and then feel a dizzy spell.

She appears in front of you.

You tell her what you needed to say, and your only reward is her face blushing, her eyes a mix of embarrassment and delight.

It was a nice last sight to see before you collapsed.

When you woke up, you were tended to by a variety of doctors. The king shook your hand, and declared you to be her fiance at the banquet. It was an awkward moment, but as the two of you sat at that table, smiling at each other, you felt..happy.

Afterwards, the two of you retreated to the that one place both of you found safe.

The archives. At a table, the two of you sat, reading books, letting the world pass by. Words flowed freely, and as you sat there, she tapped you on the shoulder.

“Can you read this for me?” She holds out an open book, and you take it.

It's the tale about the knight and the princess falling in love. You take it from her hands, and giver a gentle smile.

“Of course.”

flipping the page, you begin reading to her.

And lived happily ever after.

This concludes the Tale of the Scholarly Knight.

Good night, ladies and gentlemen, and thank you very much for listening.
