Last time, on EDEN City Blues,
You are Sergeant Warrick Locke d’Angelo, MC1309018, on indefinite medical leave from UNAAF and today is the worst day of the month. As a mandatory part of the draft, you were given a neural implant to interface with communications. Yours doesn’t work properly, and the powers that be decided you make a better case study than a soldier. They gave you an apartment up in Beta, which you now share with an old friend, welfare stipends you spend on pain killers, no way back into the service, no way outside the walls of EDEN again, and nothing to do with your life.

And, actually that’s all I have. The producers are telling me that it’s audience participation time. If one of you can create a satisfactory summary of the episodes so far, corrected by me of course, they’ll release a bonus episode for everyone!

I hope you have some idea of where we are right now, because we’re diving in.

For tonight’s episode,
As you disconnect from Myst and return to your apartment, you check the time. 0340. The power to your tower will get cut off at 0800, and will be off for twenty four hours. The rolling blackouts across EDEN were of course carefully planned and orchestrated by EVE, and you had months advance notice on this, which is why your poker night is planned during it. But you are running out of time to catch up with Fenix. Drumming your fingers on your EMU, you think.

>Check on your spiders. Something may have tripped by now.
>Speak with EVE. She was saying something about the hangar sim.
>Go back in the Net. That’s where all of your hints have been.
>Other.

My summary, as tweeted http://pastebin.com/swJzihEe , or would a "per session summary be better?

>Check on your spiders. Something may have tripped by now.
How long would this take? The Info-kiosk would be a affected by the blackout, right?

>Speak with EVE. She was saying something about the hangar sim.
We should do this first, maybe while getting ready to go out
>>
>>28124524
I'm secretly Twitter incompetent, so I have no idea how to find where you tweeted

It would take you a while to get there and get back, it's about two km away with no train, not to mention the time spent working with the data.
>>
>>28124551
I don't really know either, just made my twitter to follow you.
So it would take around 20 minutes to get there. I think we should wait, then and get a hold of the news on the hangar-sim situation
>>

>speak with eve

Would you like to light up while you do so?

Nah.
>>
>>28124761
No, its already quite late and we should get something done before the Blackout...
>>
You place the EMU on your desk and tap your moniter to wake it back up. EVE’s avatar is already displayed there, looking at you again. “You said something about the MPs trying to break into the hangar sim? What’s going on with that?” you ask, scratching behind your ear. You could probably use a good shower by now.

“Correct Admin Warrick. You requested that I watch the sim for you, and I have been. The only people to try to access it are the Military Police, on request of Dr. Chase. They gained access to the simulation for a period of ten minutes, in which time they attempted to access the source data and examined the capabilities of the system. Further data of what was found was corrupted when the connection was severed. I am not permitted to reveal any further data, even to you,” she says as she quickly creates a simple diagram to show you.

“You’d think they would have had more discretion. Good to hear I wasn’t crazy about the damn place existing though. If the connection was severed though, someone is watching it. Although a ten minute delay is odd,” you muse as you spin from side to side in yoru chair, staring at the ceiling, and occasionally glancing over at your great pile of cannabis. “Keep me posted on other people trying to go there. The MPs fucking around in it doesn’t really tell me much, yeah?”

“Of course Admin Warrick. Although you should really get some sleep. Your health deteriorated rapidly when you had insomnia, and it would be bad for that to recur,” Eve responds. Typical AIs simulate empathy through word choice, but EVE was older than that, and had developed her own empathy system. It of course sounds a bit like nagging to you. An impatient sister thinking she knows better.

“I’ll be fine EVE, time’s running out, I have work to do. I’ll get some sleep during the blackout,” you respond.

And, even though its mundane, we should eat something and get some water, wouldn't want to faint or something.
But going outside after this should be good for a change.
(Or could we pick up something on the way, delicious Street-vendor noodles or something, thats would be very Cyberpunk )
>>

>>Go check on your spiders.
We can also check out the city while we're out.
>>
You lazily push yourself to your feet and shake the numbness out of your limbs. You can still feel your workout tensing yoru muscles, but you ignore it. Still in the clothes you wore for Twi, you walk out of your apartment and lock it. Your spiders are sending data to the info kiosk outside of Indie News, so you start heading that way. With the train lines spread out every three towers, and alternating directions, you’re left with no quick way of getting over there except walking.

A growling stomach and the lingerings of your buzz lead you down a few flights of stairs to Delta level. A street vending stand called Maru’s is just a few towers away from you. It’s typically backed up, but almost nobody seems to be out of their rooms. There’s a few people lined up, but you quickly get through the line and purchase your usual fare and keep going to Indie News. You’re not quite sure what they make the brown sauce for the noodles out of, supposedly it’s synthetic meat seasoned with herbs from the nearby hydroponics, but you never can be sure with street vendors. Either way, it tastes good enough to keep you from thinking too hard.

As you cross the footbridges between the towers you take a few moments to look down in the shadows of EDEN to the depths of Gamma. During the day, the brightest part of EDEN is Alpha, where the sun can shine down on everyone. But when the night sets, Gamma stays alive, and sends its glow of uncountable electronics and lights and advertisements radiating up through the city, bouncing off the steel walls and the SMARTglass windows.

1/2
>>
Down below you can hear the typical noise of ghetto life, people shouting, music blaring, the scrape of city boarders, the occasional gunshot, but it’s all quieter. Most citizens of Gamma spend their free time on the Net, and few work in the middle of the night, but there should still be more people going about their business.

You finish your noodles by the time you get back to the train station outside Indie News and easily locate the kiosk you targeted. But you notice that a large crowd of people are gathered around the display on the wall of the Indie News area.

You distract yourself for a moment and join the crowd. A live interview is being broadcast on all of their channels. General Chase, Dr. Chase’s father, is speaking with them about the allegations of chemical weapons production.

---

Andrew Warthaw was humming a poor rendition of Nagasaki’s song Echoes as he prepared himself. He was the lead anchor for Indie News, and had finally secured an interview with one of the most powerful man in all of Eden, General Chase. His mirror was connected to a compact laser projector to display any important updates to him without using his Augment Menu, and it lit up as he started tying his tie.

“General Chase is ready Andy, get your pants on and get out here,” the message read. He scowled and continued with his tie. Over, through, around, behind, over, around, through, loop behind, loop back, cinch. It was almost four in the morning and he had been pulled out of sleep maybe twenty minutes prior, but he could still tie a trinity. General Chase was of course the commander of the Military Police in charge of Eden. Officially, the elected representatives and the council were supposed to be the ones in power. Despite what they say though, the military is slow to release power back to the people.

The door to his changing room opened up and his assistant, Lauren, stuck her head in. “Get your pants on Andie, he’s here,” she said, her eyes wide and her hair barely contained in a ponytail.

Andie turned around, looked at her, and glanced at his bare legs. “Here?”

1/7?
>>
“Yeah, here here. He’s waiting on you. Get going.”
“The General Chase, commander of the MPs, is here in person? I thought this was going to be a Net interview,” he said as he quickly looked around the room to try to find his pants, eventually finding them crumpled in his closet. A quick snap of the fabric and the wrinkles disappeared though. “It’s four in the morning, isn’t he supposed to be a professional? Only NEETs are up this late,” he said as he jumped into his pants and tucked his shirt in.
“He said this is when he was available to do a prerecorded interview,” Lauren said as she opened the door more and leaned against the frame, hugging her clipboard to her chest. “You’re going to ask him about the keys, right?”
Andie sighed and hung his head for a moment before buckling his belt on his hip. “No Lauren. I’m not asking the most powerful man in the continent about something as pointless as that. We invited him here to talk about the allegations of chemical weapon production, and for fuck knows why, he agreed. So I’m going to talk to him about that,” he said as he slipped into his shoes, straightened his clothes one last time and started to walk out.
“But that’s what all of our viewers are asking about. What are they and how do you get one? It’s absolutely exploding through the Net,” Lauren said as she followed him down the hall.

2/7?
>>
“We are the only Independent News allowed in Beta, that gives us prestige, alright? I want to know about the keys as well, but I’m not going to let us look like some shithead pirate station down in Gamma by asking about the fucking keys,” Andy said as he stopped by a mirror to fuss with his hair for a moment.
Lauren sighed and slowed down. “Fine then, be a stuck up ass.”

Andy sighed. “Lauren, don’t be like that. We never get opportunities like this and you know it,” he said as she spun on her heels and walked off.

“You have a curl in the back of your hair,” she said before rounding a corner.

After five minutes of painstakingly trying to fix his hair in the mirror, he sat down at his desk across from General Chase. “This is Andrew Warthaw from Indie News, proud to broadcast to you from Beta level. Joining me tonight is General Steven Chase, Commander of the Military Police, here to talk with me about allegations of chemical weapons productions.”

“Glad to be here Andrew,” General Chase said as he leaned his arms on the desk and smiled. Age and stress had given him a stern and harsh appearance, the kind expected from a drill sergeant commanding respect from new recruits.

Andrew was a moment late on his response, distracted by the unemotional glare in his eyes. “General Chase, you don’t often join Independent News stations for interviews, and even then it is typically only over the Net.”

3/7?
>>
General Chase nodded his head to the side. “That would be because this is a very serious matter that has been thrust in front of the citizens of Eden, and it is my duty to alleviate these concerns. And the freedom of the press is a fundamental value in this great city. Having hard workers such as yourself bring the news to the people shows that we have not strayed from the founding of our country. I am always happy to cooperate.” He had rejected them dozens if not hundreds of times and would only give his public statements to the government run media.

“Reports from anonymous sources say that the military has been using funding to develop chemical arms, saying the only use for these would be to suppress the people of Eden. What do you have to say about that?” Andrew asked as he folded his hands and waited for a deflection.

“The reports are accurate. The man who leaked this is currently in custody for insubordination,” General Chase stated casually.

Andrew was silent for a while. “Accurate?” General Chase nodded. “And insubordination, not treason?”

“Of course. These are public defense projects, not some conspiracy. Because the outcome of the experiments could not be determined until recently, the men working on them were ordered to not speak of the work. There are numerous projects such as these, and the information on them will be made public once work on them has been completed and the outcomes can accurately be reported. The public has a right to know what their government is doing, but measures must be taken that freedom of information does not lead to slander and lies.”

4/7?
>>
Andrew pursed his lips and thought for a moment, matching the generals stare. “Then would you tell me what the goal of this project was? Why would the government need to produce chemical weapons? They have been prohibited across the world for decades.”

“Andrew, the prohibitions on chemical weapons were made in a world entirely different from the one we live in now. In this day and age, one of the most important matters is insuring the safety of our soldiers as they oversee the world around us. It was believed that a compound could be created that would target and destroy the pathogen. Hypothetically, it could eradicate it everywhere. It would simply be irresponsible to not investigate this avenue of progress because of the fears of men and women long dead.”

“Surely you could use the same breath to disregard the constitution. Those treaties were major advances in world peace,” Andrew said as he jabbed his finger down on the desk. “You can’t control chemical weapons.”

“The treaties were made to prevent war crimes. Crimes against man and animal. This compound was developed not for use against people or animals, but against the pathogen, and only that. It is not in violation of the treaties.”

5/7
>>
“How much was produced?”

“Enough for testing it only.”

“Was it a success?”

“The data is still being processed, but it the preliminary data suggests it works as hypothesized. These are the kinds of successes we hope for when we explore new possibilities. Don’t you want these to succeed so that we can expand beyond the walls of EDEN?”

“It’s not uncommon for people to believe that we could settle outside the walls regardless. Look at the Isles for example,” Andrew said as he leaned over his desk.

General Chase took his turn to purse his lips and leaned away from the desk. “Those are the kind of people who want to open the Wind Gates again despite all the evidence against it.”

“The Wind Gates could provide enough energy to halve or even completely eliminate the need for rolling blackouts! Do you have any idea how many people die because EVE can’t watch their biometrics when they’re in a blackout?”

6/7
>>
“If the Wind Gates open again, then the pathogen will infest all of Gamma and Delta. It would be a blood bath. It’s still out there, whether you loons want to believe it or not!”

“Tested levels of the pathogen have been determined to be far below critical levels! The only way opening the Wind Gates could lead to an outbreak is if the link to CZAR production can be proven. Is that what you’re implying General Chase?”

General Chase scowled and stood up. “We’re done here. You can expect a public statement to be made through the government media,” he said as he walked away from the desk. “Your right to broadcast from Beta will be under review if this is how you conduct yourself. Nothing but fear mongering.”

Andrew watched General Chase leave for a moment and turned to his camera man. He sighed and shrugged. “We broadcasted that live, right?”

“Yes, sir,” the cameraman replied just before a squad of military police filled the room and the broadcast stopped.

The crowd is getting lively, and the tower is filled with MPs. One spark and it could turn into an impromptu raid, not good for anybody. The prisons would get more stock, most everyone would be held without trial, and you’d get shit from Chase when he has to come bail you out. You only made it to the back of the throng of people, your height letting you get a relatively good view of the suspended display, so you’re able to slowly slip out and retreat to the main area of the train station.

Off to the side, not particularly near any entrance or exit or boarding station, is your info kiosk. You easily tap into it and gain admin access to it. Inside, your faithful spiders have been gathering all kinds of good data for you. They didn’t catch anyone accessing the hangar sim, but they did find all kinds of data on Twilight Key creation. Far too much to be instantly analyzed. You’ll have to take it back and do some number crunching on it back in your apartment to get a good grasp for it, but you save it all in your internal storage and get ready to return.

Looking back at the crowd though, you notice that MPs are pushing a path through them and to the station proper. A clean and new train is waiting on the Red line, probably one of ones made for the new line above Alpha. As you turn away, something catches your eye. A lone city boarder is grinding down the opposite tower. Just before he passes the line, he jumps off and lands in the maglev cushion, pausing a moment to look at the MPs.

You stand at your crossroads. Logic pulls you to your right, back to your apartment where you can slink in the shadows and go about your work. Curiosity pulls you to your left, over to the MPs and General Chase, and the City Boarder. Time ticks by as you struggle with indecision, and they group of soldiers gets closer and closer to the train, until you break and walk over after them. A number of stragglers from the crowd are still push against the soldiers and jeering them for one thing or another, and you look no different from them.

General Chase by now is at the front of the procession and boards the train quickly. The MPs behind him take their time properly keeping the people back and keeping the train secure, and you see a number of them take note of the City Boarder. The guy is in a dull grey trench coat with a scarf covering his mouth, and what appears to be a pair of Mag Goggles on his face, completely obscuring his identity. If you could ping his neural implant, you could probably figure out who he is, but before you have the chance to consider it, he kicks his board up and realigns the magnets, speeding off down the rail and out of the concern of the MPs.

Just before the train doors close, you make eye contact with General Chase as he sits down in the passenger car. He immediately holds up a hand to signal the MPs, and stands back up. He seems to be coming to say something to you.

>Join him. He outranks you, heavily.
>Duck out. He’s not technically in your chain of command, and you have things to do.

Added to my priority list for short stories.

A teaser for them, since they aren't super critical at the moment in decision making,

The Isles : A small but noteworthy colony outside of any major mega structure. They mostly live on the islands in the Great Lakes, notably Isle Royale and Drummond Island, hence the name. They are treated as a Sovereign American State. Their technology is typically regarded as "post-apocalyptic"

The pathogen : Think Airborne Super Rabies, and make it much worse, and over the entire world.

You nod and walk up to the door to the train and stand at attention. The MPs guarding the entrance both focus on you, hands on their sidearms. “At ease gentlemen,” General Chase says as he walks up to the door to the train. He smiles when he sees you, broad and toothy enough for you to see the two fake teeth put in where Chase had punched them out. Never did get an explanation for that, and the citizens never caught on, but they’re just close enough to the wrong color for you to notice when you look, and you always look. “Sergeant d’Angelo, it’s been a while.”

“Indeed it has Sir,” you answer as you relax your posture a bit. You glance at the soldiers around you, growing increasingly worried about your slacking appearance over the months of inactivity.

“I hope you weren’t here listening to that nonsense of an interview,” he says with a scowl towards Indie News.

“I saw the end of it Sir. I take it they told you it would be prerecorded?” you offer.

“Lying scum they are. It’s people like them that will ruin Eden. But I hear you found something interesting? Why don’t you join me for a moment and we can speak about it?” he says as he takes a step back to clear a path for you to enter the train.

Notable safe spots :

EDEN : Technology producer of the world.
The Isles : Largest stable colony.
Cali : An overgrown trade city between EDEN and the Himalayan Sprawl. Considered to be the best place to live.
Himalayan Sprawl : Himalayan metropolis containing almost all of the Asian population. Main source of untrained labor.
The Castles : City-State like mega cities of much smaller scale than Eden. Roughly along old European national borders.
Delta : The Amazon River Delta was shored up and canalized to create a compartmentalized network of stable cities. Has almost no trade with the rest of the world.

Assuming I'm not forgetting any of them

Only in the Castles, the world has gone back to Mercantalism more or less because of the pathogen. In EDEN, the only way to get outside is to join the military, which you're forced to join if you're able to, but then they typically just get stuck in occupation areas across the continent.

After this next update, my rate will drop a bit, sorry.

“Of course Sir,” you state as you step forward and board the train with him. The train car must be brand new, at least on the inside. Still has the factory smell, and isn’t covered in graffiti, and the seats still have cushions, and the lights don’t flicker.

“The train car is the new model, built for the Sky Line when it is completed. The windows are larger so that passengers can see more of the sky and city around them. It will be a monument when it’s finished,” General Chase says as he pushes past you and takes a seat. He smiles, crosses his legs, and folds his hands in his lap. “Please, have a seat. I must get back to headquarters, but I will have EVE take you anywhere you’d like in EDEN once we arrive.”

“Thank you Sir,” you say as you sit across the aisle from him. The MPs file into the train, staying in the front of the train to allow the two of you to speak privately.

“It was reported to me that you discovered a simulation in the Net that contained classified information?”

“Correct Sir. The simulation contained a detailed recreation of the lab where I was given my neural implant,” you answer as the train starts to slowly accelerate.

“This is quite concerning, because that area is currently being used to house certain super computers. If they were to be compromised, Eden would be in a very dire position. This represents a breach in city security, and a potential terrorist threat. I need you to tell me everything you know,” General Chase orders, his smile gone.

You shrug and try to shy away from the question for a moment before responding, “I was given the coordinate for the sim, which I gave to Will, and the only thing I saw in there was the guy Fenix. He had a messed up avatar and left before I could backtrace him. Said some cryptic nonsense that I’m struggling to recall, gave me a Twilight Key, and left.”

“Have you learned anything since then?”

“Not really. Apparently Twilight Keys are the new craze but no one really knows what they do, and they seem to be coming from him. So he has an agenda. But I’m sure your men have discerned as much.”

He nods, staring out the window behind you. “Are you sure you don’t know anything else? Anything could help, and I could put you in cooperation with my men investigating this Fenix.”

You stare at him for a moment, considering the option presented to you. You’d be a soldier again. Maybe not in full, but certainly a soldier. You’d have purpose beyond your own amusement again. But your gut says no. You just feel a bit uncomfortable at the prospect. “I certainly appreciate the offer Sir, but I don’t think I’m the man for the job.”

“You’re a soldier, aren’t you? You’re on medical leave for my son to experiment on, not because you can’t be a soldier anymore,” General Chase says as the train ramps up to Alpha level.

You can’t help but chuckle a bit. “As I recall, when they tried to keep me in the occupation forces, they found that the neural implant they gave me fried all the communication systems, so I actually couldn’t be a soldier anymore.”

“That was a fault in the communication systems. The Landmaster program didn’t end with you, you know. I personally oversee it still.”

“But still, even if I could be an MP, only the best of the soldiers are supposed to be MPs, right? I’ve been out of action for months now. And I’m no investigator. I’m just a foot soldier,” you say as the train slows to a stop outside the Military Police headquarters. You hadn’t even noticed how fast the train had been moving it had accelerated so smoothly.

“Well, I don’t want to push you into any decision. It’s very late in the night afterall,” General Chase says as he stands up. You stand up with him out of respect, and he continues, “Why don’t you sleep on it? The offer is open. If you want to take me up on this, EVE will put you through to me.” He holds out his hand and you grasp it, giving him a firm shake. “And maybe next time you shouldn’t smoke so much weed, hmm?” he asks, tapping his nose.

You grin. “Not sure I can promise that Sir, it’s been prescribed to me afterall.” You share a mild chuckle with him before he walks to the front of the train.

We may want to go buy a small firearm in case we need to defend ourselves. Maybe going after the blackout would be a better idea though.

How strictly regulated are weapons in EDEN? Legally or not.

I think we need a montage, eventually.

I think we should flush the weed or dispose of it in some way.

I could do a montage if you want to agree on a list of goals and their priorities

I'll have to stop it if you come to an important moment though.

Blackmarket guns come from war profiteers but have became hard to find ever since they implemented electronic safeties to track where weapons are and when they're being fired.

okay then, I guess I'm writing

“I believe I’ll be seeing you Warrick,” General Chase comments before exiting the train with the MPs. You nod to him, maintaining attention until his focus leaves you and you drop into a slump in your chair.

“EVE, take me home,” you mumble as you rub your eyes.

“Admin Warrick, this train is only supposed to travel in the negative direction. Having it travel in the positive direction would create significant backup,” Eve responds as the doors on the train slide shut.

“How significant?” you ask. When she doesn’t respond, you continue, “Because I could really care less right now. It can’t be worse than the usual crap City Boarders cause.”

“Warrick, I can’t just rearrange the train schedules to accommodate you. That would cause so much trouble for everyone I don’t even want to calculate it.”

“Eve, I have permission from General Chase, use some override, I don’t care. Take me home, it’s like four thirty in the morning and I have work to do still,” you say as you stare at the camera in the front of the train.

“Fine then. I suppose I can just reinitialize them again tonight. Traffic flow is much lower than saturation as well,” Eve says as the train picks up and starts reversing out of the station.

“Yeah, why the hell is that?”

“The only significant change in the last few hours that could account for this is the vast increase in data transfer in the Net, but I do not have the time to compute more than that at this time,” she explains before going quiet. You take a moment of solace in the quiet to relax your mind. Before you know it, you’re making a few quick transfers, and stepping off at the platform outside your tower.

You make it back to your apartment without any trouble and quickly start your analysis of the spider data. Before the distribution map can be created however, you get a message from Barry. “What the fuck are you doing to my network capacity?”

Calling it here for the thread. A neat cliffhanger, and I did not complete nearly as much work as I was supposed to because I was busy writing extra content for this.

Will archive in a moment. Next thread Thursday at the original time.

Thoughts? Conspiracy theories? Story requests? Criticism?

Thanks for running it OP. See you Thursday.

Next thread can we get some veiwpoints that let us in on what CZAR does? And not from a police standpoint, from like a junkies P.O.V.

Reading this is giving me a huge itch to start writing some of my own so thanks op

If you want to write your own shorts, and they don't clash with canon, I'll slap the seal of approval on them.

And I'm going to withhold the CZAR PoV until you get a better taste for what Gamma is like, or you'll be a bit underwhelmed. Certainly on the list though.
>>
So what's up with the archive vote war? There should be no reason for like 5 voters to be hunting these threads down just to keep them out of green

If all the lurkers upvoted, they'd probably make it to purple
>>
>>28133379
oh boy. Skeleton key's are gonna somehow tie down to the gamma level arent they? I bet we can find a shoddy shack/grovel where inside we find a chinese guy who uses ninja swords for battle who can train us
>>
>>28133437
Matrix mind jack sounds more likely

Skeleton Key unlocks your mind's potentials!
>>
Lurkers need to start speaking up. This is a disservice to the quest.

Why is this still alive?
