Thread III.
Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Lamia%20Legacy%20Quest

The trip back to your home is thankfully without incident. Through a few muted discussions through the darkened foliage of the woodlands you find out that the trap you blindly walked into was indeed belonging to Veles. A quick apology from him and the affirmation that he had no idea that someone had claimed this land is all you get from him as you follow him through the woods. A few times his... dog, makes an appearance, before dashing off into the underbrush yet again, and McCain tensing each time, only to relax and follow on Greenbriar.

After a short period, you emerge from the treeline and see the darkened mass that is your home. A bit of tinder and some logs later, you have a comfortable fire blazing away merrily in the hearth, while you take over cooking duties much to McCain's relief. A simple meal using some of the beef you have left, backstraps with a quick pepper marinade seared over the hearth. It isn't much but both McCain and your guest seem to enjoy it. You do note him examining the silverware a moment before following your lead. More a few bits of conversation, mostly McCain asking Veles questions while you act as interpretor. After a while you decide to turn in, and turn ruefully to Veles. <I'm not sure any of our rooms can quite accommodate you.>

<That is no matter, if it is alright with you, I will stay near the hearth. The room here should be more comfortable than most of the places I have slept.>

With a nod you and McCain turn in for the night, you slither under the covers and let the tension of the day draw itself out of you. You drift off to sleep.

This is new...

You find yourself at a crossroads, and are vaguely aware that this is a dream. Down one path you see a burning village, down another? You see a cave in the side of a mountain.

Oh, and a bit of side discussion since I made my vote:
Glad you didn't get devoured by terrorist coyotes, canid. Glad I woke up three hours earlier than usual to catch this.
>>
So, is our house's internal heating system run by the hearth? Heated floors and all?
Either way, I'm glad we can cook. Someone needs to know how to cook.

Heated floors are basically a series of water filled tubes set into the masonry, it uses a combination of the hearth and a rechargable heating reservoir that utilizes the same sort of premise as the heating charms from the first quest. It's a fairly popular convenience in Naga and Lamia homes. It's basically a lower tech version of radiant heating.
Yes I know that I haven't thrown much overt magic in yet. Not much in the way of thaumaturgical research on the frontier outside of a small research building based out of Snake's Landing

Update in 5.
>>
>>28139356
I was just wondering if we had to feed a separate furnace for it, or if the hearth was good enough.
I don't expect much magic out here anyhoo.

You approach the village when everything fades out. Six shots. One shadow has turned on the others, who now lay on the ground motionless. You see the last shadow standing being engulfed in arcing blue light, you watch as your father, carrying a bundle, runs off away from the scene. The shadowy figure is writhing in pain as the lightning courses through its body, before it finally collapses on the ground. You watch, and after a seeming eternity the figure stirs, staggering to its feet before looking at the scene around it. Then, a clarion call of a nitor cavalryman comes from the west, the figure staggers into the underbrush, sword in one hand, revolver in another.

It is at this point you wake up. Gliding out of bed and into the wash you make yourself decent before exiting your room. Sprawled out in front of the hearth of which the last few embers of last nights fire finally die, lies Veles in a bundle of coils his head resting against the sleeping form of Dahz.

A few moments later McCain appears in the front door and surveys the scene with a noiseless chuckle.

"Well Miss, what are your plans for today?"

>?
>>
>>28139425
So, the guy's unconscious with his dog. Marvelous.
First order of business is make some breakfast. If delicious bacon doesn't wake him up, then I'd be confused. After that, I believe we're heading into town to talk to a land buyer, get some ranch hands, some cattle, and cattle accessories. In that order I presume.
Chickens too, if we don't own any already. Enough for eggs.
>>
Seems the other posters aren't keeping up as closely. Ah well, such is life in the morning. Get some coffee with that breakfast too.

Getting a meeting to try to get a price on the land. Would be interesting to get an idea as to the character of the buyer if nothing else. After that, getting an idea of the spot price on beef at the auction might be wise. I think getting back in to the cattle business would be the best course for us.
>>
>>28139916
or at least, having enough of a hand in a cattle business to produce a relatively steady profit. Can't live forever on dear ol' daddy's cash.
I sort of want to go the dairy cow route to start out with, but I am unsure how meat VS dairy operations work.
>>
>>28139944
Dairy is a whole other thing. We are out in BFE, thus would need to ferment or magically preserve the milk for use elsewhere.
>>
>>28140124
if it's a whole other thing, then fuck it. Standard meat ranching it is.

Milk is just 'drain milk from udders wow you're done.' Well, not today of course, but back in ye olden times. Cheese is a lot more work.
>>
>>28140163
I think this may be why we stick with normal ranching. No complicated cheesery, no milk going bad. Just bring a herd of live cattle into town, sell them to butcher, gain profits.

For Dairy it would be a whole different setup you'd have to get into, that said, you want to get one for private purposes? That is be a lot easier, just remember you need people to do all this stuff

Also, the Land Buyer is in Snake's Landing, the Auction is in Riverport.
>>
>>28140132
That isn't to say we couldn't keep a couple of milk cows for ourselves or the hands, but I don't know how snake guts will agree with milk.
>>

>they're in two entirely different places
FFFFffff
Will we be fucked if we put the auction off another day?

Well, we need ranch hands before we buy cattle either way, so we can pick them up in snake's landing if need be. But if there aren't any cattle to buy the next day, we'd basically have fucked ourself out of money.
>>
>>28140238
>>28140199
upon further consideration, we should probably get the cattle first. We'll miss out on good deals at auction if we don't, and the land buyer is staying a week or two anyhoo, if we heard rumors right.

It has only been one day since McCain mentioned "A few days until the auction." Travel between the two towns is fairly speedy using a coastal skiff, but you'd be unable to take the carriage and horses on the boat with you. You could go to the Auction on your own, and have McCain or any hands go the long way with the carriage.
>>28140199
>Is be
Fucking hell that's what I get for changing sentence structure mid sentence.
>>
>>28140199
I say go for the auction, send a letter to the land buyer, see if we can meet in a few days. Even if we decide to sell a fair bit of land, we may still be able to stay in the cattle game.

>>28140217

>>
>>28140323
I agree that the auction takes priority, but apparently it's not even started yet. Also, apparently travel between towns is "speedy".

PROPOSED PLAN:

We go to the town with the cattle, leave our horses and carriage there, take the boat to the town with the land buyer, talk to them, then use the boat to come back in time for the auction to be starting.

Agreed?

>>28140329

>>
>>28140302
Ok doing both is an option! That sounds like a plan. We will need to treat McCain and whatever hands assist him to dinner when we all arrive. Maybe we should see if our snake-friend wants in on the cattle business.
>>
>>28140420
yeah, since we're the bosslady, we sort of have to pay for dinner. Especially since it's a business trip. We don't have any hands left, though, so we need to get new ones.

As for the snake, it'd be nice to show him around, but it depends on if we can fit two in the carriage. Also if we mind being all tangled up with the guy.
>>
>>28140473
I meant (but failed to specify) somewhere nice, as a treat. But, I agree on our serpentine friend.be pretty awkward trying to get two lamia in a one lamia cart.

have we come to an agreement on which place to put our cart first? I proposed the "dump cart at auction, visit guy on boat, return" plan. Is that agreed upon?

Will have to shoot out for a while while you guys come to consensus on this option. So far it seems
1. Wake Veles, possibly via smell of cooked food.
2. Get ready for the cattle auction.
3. Meet the prospective buyer.

Going through the last thread there were some plans as well. Tossing Veles some books, you do have a very basic language primer between snakescript and UFK common as well as a bunch of other books.

Just waiting on consensus
>>
>>28140738
I like all of the things proposed here. I didn't even know about the snakescript thing.

I'm OK with this plan. We'll figure out another way to show veles down later. We might just get a second carriage.

"Best thing to do would be to wake our guest yes?" You say heading into the kitchen. "After that I suppose we had ought to get ready for the cattle auction. The way I see it, we can establish ourselves in Riverport beforehand and then I can head and speak to that land buyer in Snake's Landing. If only to see what he wants."

McCain frowns at this, "Well that'd mean we'd have to put Greenbriar and Traveller up in Riverport, and that town's still a bit rough." You recall that after annexation when the Pheonix Empire retreated from the continent, it's become somewhat infamous as a traders port. Other than a skeleton crew of Nitor set up near the wide mouth of the river a large part of the town is largely without proper enforcement. The main reason it is used as opposed to snakes landing as that branch of the river becomes wide and sluggish, allowing easier access for the cattle barges that take it to the mainland proper. "Not sayin' that we'd be robbed but it would be a good idea to have someone stay with the horses and that'd be most likely me. I don't like you goin' to see this 'buyer' fellow all on your own either."

You begin cooking breakfast, "That is a good point." You look over at the sleeping guest. "Well, I could see if our guest wants to go, he could stay near me. I mean I still have my schoolbooks I could get him a crash course on language on the boat."

McCain regards that for a moment, "Well, I'm not sure about it, but Snake's Landing is pretty quiet from what I hear. It could probably work."

The wafting scent of cooking food travels into the main room, and you notice Dahz stirring before her master does. She extracts herself from underneath his head, and you wince as his head hits the ground. He wakes up and looks around bleary eyed before seeing the both of you. <Nngh, apologies, did not expect to sleep in this late, this floor is deceptively comfortable.>

<Not a problem at all,> You respond, <I was just going over my plans for the next few days. I also have the books on language and history if you would like to look them over.>

There is something of a hungry look in his eye. <That would be splendid, though I could not take such a favor without giving something in return.>

<Funny you should say that, in the next few days we will be heading to the town of Riverport to purchase more livestock, but at the same time I have business I need to take care of in another town down the coast. We are... hesitant to leave our carriage unattended so McCain was going to stay in town while I went to handle it. I would appreciate it if you would be able to come along.>

He regards you for a few moments. <So not only have you given me lodging for the night, bore the news of the seal being destroyed, offered me knowledge on language, you ask in return that I go on a trip that will let me see more of this curiosity? There's not a way I could say no.>

You turn and give McCain a smile. "He's in."

Breakfast goes by quickly, as McCain gets most of the supplies strapped to the back of the carriage. He comes back a bit later. "Well Miss, there are two ways we can go about it, you can ride up on top, be fairly rough riding on the way there but would probably be moreso for that 'Veles' fellow, or you can ride inside. I wager he'll fit inside if he loops around a bit, but It'd be awful close for the both of you to try. That's not counting the wo-dog."

>? This is largely a break up for dinner, the update was going to be even longer.
>Ride on top, Veles inside
>Ride inside, Drape Veles on top.
>>
>>28142319
Ah, welcome back. I had just sort of assumed there would be a hitching service of some kind, but that's silly of me to think in frontierland.

I'm all for bringing veles, but you know, carriage space. So only if we have an actual way to bring him. If we can both fit in the carriage, no problem.
>>
>>28142367
It's our wagon, so we take the comfy seat. Which I am assuming is on top of the wagon in the sun, given our current configuration. We may switch if it rains.

You get yourself situated and slither your way into the carriage. Veles follows you and cheerfully makes himself comfortable on the roof after tying an oddly light lead to Dahz. McCain positions himself in the drivers seat as you start off. You go to head up to the hatchway only to find it stuck, a nudge elicits a noise of surprise from Veles and with a shifting of scales repositions himself so he is not blocking the way. It is still a fairly crisp morning but if Veles is feeling the cold, he doesn't show it. McCain meanwhile scans the horizon while prompting Greenbriar and Traveller onward. His breath fogging the air next to you.

After an animated discussion on the heating of your house, the heating charms a point of particular interest to Veles, you arrive at North Fork. A 39 foot lamia hanging off your roof elicits a few stares, but not as much as the man going flying out of the general store with Enos, the minotaur butcher, yelling something regarding his name NOT being Angus behind him.. A quick check in with the incensed meatcutter lets him know where you are headed and yes he is ale to keep an eye on the property for you for a bit longer. With that, you start heading out on the western fork of the town, crossing the river and onwards to Riverport.

The trip to Riverport is noticeably uneventful. You roll past a few ranches and with the coastline approaching you feel the air become more humid. Veles seemingly becomes more animated, asking more questions while pouring over the language primer with Dahz, who has long since given up trying to follow and whined until your snake associate placed her on the roof, next to him. You round a small hill and get a full view of the former Phoenix Empire city and the river winding its way through it into the ocean. When you enter, you can see why it is a merchant port. The river itself broadens significantly, becoming a lazily churning expanse of water heading towards the coast. People of all races go about their lives, and while you have been here before, you are always struck by the size, and they say cities in the UFK proper are bigger. Veles is watching the scene intently though he doesn't appear shocked by the number of people.

McCain brings the cart to a halt in the eastern block of the city, near the wharf. "The auction will prolly be on the west side near the barges like they always do it, but you get more pickpockets that way. Either way, its far too late to book a skiff now."

You relay your plan to Veles as you roll. <So cattle is your primary business? I do a small bit of animal husbandry myself. Dahz being but one of the products. Its... an interesting distraction from my usual endeavours.>

<And those are?> you ask.

<A greater understanding of the world we live in. As much as I can learn. The pack and the rookery provide a good deal of insight into some of those aspects.> he responds, <That and tinkering with artifice and engineering I've grown quite adept at it if I do say so myself.>

It is then you arrive at the cattle pens, massive open areas on the banks of the west cordoned off with heavy gauge wire. You see some ranchers have already set up, hoping to be the sea of beef that herald the coming auction.

Roll 1d20+2 to gauge the incoming herd.
So I just learned that a majority of the archive downvotes came from an individual from Louisiana State University who has now gotten the campus banned.

"I can't get a look with the sunset like it is" McCain gripes, standing on the runner board of the carriage with his hand shading his eye from the glare.

<I have no idea what I am looking for> Veles states, before he goes back to pouring over the book you gave him.

<Well, it is no matter,> you say, <We get all sorts of widgets and doodads from the mainland in this town to keep someone occup- Well, what have we here.> You say as you spy something coming in.

You see the usual early sellers, mostly eastern fork ranchers like the Jolson ranch cattle, the Wales ranch brand on others, but what you didn't expect was the not insignificant number of western ranch cattle of various brands being brought in. Including a pair of dairy cows being handled by a young lad of obviously phoenix empire heritage. Times must be extremely hard for the smaller western ranchers if they are coming this early and are selling their dairy cattle on the meat market.

You point towards the pair of dairy cows, "A little bit of generalization on the farm might help."

McCain follows your gaze towards them, "Well, I can see how we could make that work. Though from looking at it I'd say it wouldn't be expensive to get those. Either way, I'll make a note to talk the..." He looks at the paddock name, "Sun ranchers, when I can. From the looks of it these early sellers put their stuff on the market tomorrow."

It is here you hear Dahz yawn from the roof of the carriage. McCain gives you a look. "Lets see if we can't find a place for a proper bit of chow and shuteye. Last thing we need is you nodding off in the middle of talks with someone 'important'." He says, visibly quoting the last word.

You smirk and agree, heading back inside the carriage as you head back towards the Inn. Inside you see a few groups of people, a lone harpy at one table, a group of humans at another carrying on. The bartender is a lizardman who seems

You lay a handful of Isen's on the counter and ask for a good hearty travelers meal. This being Riverport, your meal is ocean perch fillets, pan fried and drizzled with butter. The bartender rattling on about how the local Mer have a dire advantage on the fisheries here and how most of the fish they get come from them off the dock. Once again, fairly simple fair, but good all the same. Veles finishes about the same time you do, and you head up to the rooms. You find that the rooms have beds that retract into the wall, the mechanism of one Veles spent a good time examining. McCain mentions staying up and catching an earful as he heads back towards the bar. Dhaz meanwhile passed out on the top of the carriage on the way back, and slipped into the hatchway as you were extracting yourself. You sidle into bed behind one of the dividers, and try to ignore the fact Veles has pulled three of the four remaining beds down and is trying to fit himself across all of them. You find yourself getting more drowsy as you chat with Veles about his studies. You finally drift off to sleep just as he was mentioning something about HEKA fields...

Your dreams that night are aimless, images flashing, you get a fleeting glance of the burning village and the cave you have seen prior to coming here, before it all fades into a white noise. You wake up early the next morning, and pull yourself out of bed, Veles is surprisingly nowhere to be found, the beds he was sleeping in made up to mirror the 4th. You make yourself decent and make your way back to the main floor. Its a lot louder now, and as you turn the corner you can see why. Two of the tables of people that were here before are still up, one, a red headed harpy girl, sits playing with the lemon in her glass of water. On the other side of the room a raucous band of 4 people, a combination of elves and humans you take it, appear to have not stopped drinking since last night. The leader of the pack appears to be going on and on about an organization known as the shadows and how he went through their mysterious rituals to become the best fighter there is. As you slither up to where McCain and Veles are sitting at the bar you catch the harpy giving the drunks the dirtiest look you've seen. The bartender meanwhile is simultaneously acting as a translator between your two associates, and pulling some very expensive bottles of liquor off the top shelf off the bar and stowing them under the counter.

McCain nods, "I'll see what I can dig up, and see about a fair price for those dairy cows you spotted yesterday. In the meanti-"

He stops mid sentence as the sound of chairs scraping on the floor resonates throughout the room. The drunks have stood up and are making their way over towards the harpy and are having a heated argument, other patrons are hastily leaving. "Miss, I've seen the way these go, this is a brawl waiting to happen and in the worst way, want me to take care of it?"

"If they are that drunk, any reason why she couldn't deal with them?" You ask.

"Simple, they are focusing on her, not me." McCain says

"Well, all right, but we'll be waiting here ready in case it blows up."

McCain nods and gets up with a handkerchief in one hand, rubbing them together as you turn to Veles. <Things might get a little hairy, as it were.>

The big snake finishes the last of his breakfast as you place an order for something similar. <Well, if it does get that crass, I would be more than happy to oblige them.> With that he surprises you as he places his right hand on his blade sheath, and the left shoots out some intimidating claws. Noting your surprise, he continues <Unless lethality is not what you had in mind.> You shake your head and the claws retract. <Judging by your surprise, I might just have something I can show you in return> He finishes with a grin.

You turn to regard the scene before you. You catch snatches of "What did you say." and the harpy responding "I said that shadows don't have rituals." The drunk leader is not dissuaded. "Oh really? Well look here I've got a shadow medallion right here, go ahead and try to say that's fake." Its at his point McCain, kerchief still in hand reaches the group cutting off the harpy before she responds.

The sound breaking bone echoes through the room as McCain's left hook connects solidly with the man's jaw, sending him tumbling backwards. The three others look at their fallen leader, before rushing McCain, who sidesteps the first, rolls the second over his shoulder, and grabs the third in a wrist hold that forces him to his knees. McCain's boot connects solidly with the man's chest, knocking him backwards into the prone form of the leader. The man he sidestepped gathers his wits and tries to put McCain in a rear choke hold, the elf sharply elbows him in the stomach, spinning around and grabbing the man by the scruff of the neck and slamming his head into the table. "Now Miss, I'll keep an eye out for any prospect on hands and see if there are any decent deals I can swoop in on." McCain says as you board one of the flat bottomed skiffs.

The skiff operator, a mer, looks a bit nervous when Veles makes for the boat, but sighs in relief as the boat only sinks a couple of inches as his weight disperses.

With a wave you are off skimming along the coastline, you watch as it passes while Veles has one hand with book open, and the other on Dhaz's lead.

I believe we're also a greensnake. Not one of them blue or fancy colored ones. Though, a pattern might be nice.

As for actual looks, well, I imagine we're the type to be wearing a moderate to long dress when bumming around town, and a shirt/skirt deal when we're doing actual dirtywork.
I sort of imagine us as almost looking like a schoolmarm when we're dressed up.

Snakewise I have no opinion, I like all colors. But as for the other half, I can think of no finer frontierswoman than that played by hailee Steinfield in True Grit. Think her, but older. bushy brows, a few freckles from the sun, and a wavy, occasionally frizzled head of hair kept in control by a wide-brimmed hat and some hand-braided pigtails.

Clothes-wise we'd like to bundle up. If it's too hot, just take the jacket off and sun thyself, no biggie. If it's too cold, on the other hand...

You settle yourself into the boat and enjoy the scenery for a while. The skipper bring the boat over the sandbars and shallows that make up the coastline between Riverport and Snakes Landing. More than once you see massive schools of fish start and move from their spawning beds into deeper waters moving as a single entity. Veles on the other hand appears to have stopped examining the language primer. You figure now would be a good time to ask about a few things you've been wondering about.

<Veles, you don't mind if I ask you a few questions do you?>

He turns to you, <Not at all, I am more than willing to be of assistance.>

<Well, a few things, first off. Those claws, is... that something all lamias have? I never really learned much of our kind, and the books we do have don't cover how to use them. A lot is said to be passed down from family to family and well, mother died when I was very young.>

His visage grows serious as gives you an appraising look. <Well, that would explain why your posture is all wrong, if you've not had any proper mentor. I could probably make an attempt, though not on this boat, hardly would want to capsize it despite how warm the waters are. Just name a time and I'll do what I can.>

He smiles and pulls a hand out of the water. <Ah yes, it started as just an experiment in the habits of the colonies of birds of prey on the mountain. All the large hawks, falcons, and eagles on the northern continent are primarily solitary or duos that mate for life. The ones here though, they are interesting, and have colonies of five or more that serve as a communal roost. I wanted to see how many I could foster and whether this is a learned behaviour or not. It took some training, but it appears they can switch from independent to communal whenever the situation calls for it. Once the experiment was complete I could hardly just dispose of them, so I kept them and made use of them. They are excellent for game, and if you keep them well fed, they have no problems working independently I think the ones in the roost right now are... 19th generation? I found out through them that their birth rate is also dependant on food, with, surprisingly, less being born when times are plenty, but in much finer shape than larger clutches.>

<You mentioned something about the wilds, is there something I should worry about on my side of the mountain?> You ask before he can continue on about the birds.

<Ah well, not exactly, Before the seal was placed, a warding was inscribed at certain points along the mountain range, designed specifically to keep influence from any seal based magic from penetrating it. It acted as a sort of... bubble, people, boats, animals, anything that tried to find passage into the inner basin would find themselves wandering for days unless they decided to leave. It failed some time ago and I was uncertain to whether or not they just ran out, or they had detected the seal fading.>

<The inner basin? What is in there?>

<Well it was primarily put in place to protect my sire's holdings...> he begins,

<Isn't sire a masculine term, you mentioned this 'sire' as being female.>

Here he grins, <Yes, its... complicated with dragons. She was my mother, she bore me, she raised me, and as such she is the sire, the one I served until she disappeared.> Here you offer an apology for bringing it up before you are cut off, <Nonsense, she was... well she was a bit promiscuous, and as such her mentality was to experience new places and people teach her progeny the responsibility that comes with being of dragon descent before moving on to let them live their lives. I just had the advantage of being... adept when she began her study of magical theory. So I was invaluable to her.>

<Explored the other side of the mountain, maintained what she wanted me to maintain while she was gone until it was no longer necessary, from then I would study passing interests, and with my knowledge of artifice, did some trading the Casimiran Clans and Gentry.> Veles says, while pulling on the lease to prevent Dahz from jumping in the water.

<The who?>

<Oh... OH.> He says, you see the light of someone coming to an understanding flash across his features. <Your people haven't made contact with them, have they? Oh dear, this is exciting. They are... trollspawn primarily, hint of leviathan and dragon somewhere along the line. Never got much of a chance to do tests. I saw the word that describes them in that book let me try...> he appears to go through a bit of mental gymnastics before managing "Centaurs."

Anyway, I'm fully behind the sundress movement, on days off. I sort of want a chinadress, but I never know when we'd use it.

A sundress would be kickass formal wear, but it's no excuse for field gear.

i recommend a leather coat, like a duster but tighter, to hug the body (it'd be warmer that way), with the shoulder rainguard.

Fingerless thick wool gloves (no gunslinger in the world would wear fingered gloves unless it was freezing out) and a wide hat, for the sun, and thick scarf, for the cold/dust.

That sounds like a frontierswoman's outfit to me. Belts full of supplies, ammo and other doodads optional.

I had the impression that Veles had that sort of 'white man in the bush' kind of brown going, and his hair was this dirty blonde that comes from being dark-haired and then sitting in the sun for years. A bit like Tom Hanks in Cast Away. This would follow from the assumption that lamia are a northern race.

If they're southern desert dwellers, he'd be aborigine, like African or Australian bush.

No way we're ever gonna look that manly, though. For one, we a girlylamia, and for two, he's MILLENIA old. That's the timescale you work with.

<Horse-people...? Wait...how does troll plus leviathan plus dragon make half-horse half-man?> The implications of their being another society just over the hill increasing the enthusiasm of your questioning. <What is their society like? Are they as advanced as us?>

<The first count is a mystery.> Veles responds, smoothly rolling with your hectic questioning <Their society, from what I can make out is primarily based around dukedoms, with nomadic cossack bands providing a buffer between the gentry proper and the degenerated trolls on the far mountains. It was with the cossacks I did most of my trading. Furs, Meat, occasionaly I would run into a member of the gentry who needed some eagle feathers or other particular plumage for their armor decoration. As for 'advanced' I do not know, as I don't know how advanced you are. Their nobility relies on assistance from the southern court advisors.>

<Southern court? Is this a counterpart to what you said of McCain?>

<They may not be affiliated, but the magic is the same. I only caught a glimpse of the fae-kin once but they are... small. They provide assistance to the clans and from what I understand, are responsible for at least half of the intrigue between nobility of the Casimiran as they jockey for standing. There was a legend that the cossacks had regarding it but I can't quite recall it right now.>

It is here his face falls, <That is something I have encountered. Not in myself, but in people I cared deeply about. Its not a pleasant memory so I'd much rather not go into it but I will say this, my memory is not infallible, but at the same time, I have not encountered the issue that you speak of, at least to my knowledge. I have some theories regarding memory loss, but I have neither the equipment, nor the lack of ethics to experiment with the brains of the snakefolk and confirm them.>

That seems to be the final say on that matter as you go back to watching the coast. You also take the time to apologize to the mer skipper who shrugs and makes it clear he is just glad you didn't sink his boat.

>Any other questions or things I may have missed?
Apologies, I wrote up an 8 post infodump before realizing I veered off into plot I had been saving for later, and would be fairly out of character to bring up right now.

>>28176658
Oh you and your precocious ways.
I can't think of many questions this early, though. Maybe how he even got over the mountain?

Still super suspicious that veles has brain problems though.

samefagging a bit, we should probably take veles on down to an importing office at some point so he can look at fancy toys. Maybe not this time around, but eventually.

God I hope they're not pixies. They're even worse than gnomes.
On the drow front, I wonder what happens if elves live in a city like bronze peak under a mountain for a few generations.
>>
>>28177478
with how big the city we just left was i would be surprised if there wasn't atleast a small one in the one we're going to, since it is more lawful.

i imagine Veles would really enjoy all of the neat inventions that the UFK has come up with. like magic explosion shooting weapons, and that was 500 years ago. i wonder what they have become now

we need to check out some top tier gear once we get our money settled. Veles would probably like to check it out to.

Does veles even know about firearms? since he uses a blade? does he know the mechanics behind them?
>>
>>28177658
Almost certainly not. And we've not shown him our gun yet either. Maybe it'll come up on a hunting trip or something.

As for money, well, I don't know if I could bear spending it on gear that won't be earning us money right back. At least, until the ranch is doing swimmingly.

<How did you make it across the mountain anyway?> You ask, changing the subject.

<I went out the back door. My Sire spent a good time working on making the peak habitable. I have had a long time since then to do my own modifications. They are hidden of course, by her design. So imagine my surprise when I open my back door and find a stake not 20 yards from it.>

You giggle a bit at that, <It must have been good timing, he had just put those stakes down the day before we ran into you. Though, I should probably have someone give you a a proper introduction to our world.>

He shrugs, <If it is all the same, I would prefer to find out for myself rather than be told, there is a... satisfaction to finding out such things.>

<Either way, you probably haven't run into firearms.> you say, mentally chiding yourself for not introducing him to something so potentially lethal earlier.

You give him a basic rundown of their operation and safety while he gives the rifle some intense scrutiny. <Metal projectiles propelled by a controlled explosion to achieve high velocities? Intriguing, it is similar to some things that the gentry have, though far less complicated from the looks of things.>

You make a note in your mind to show him their function when you get back to the ranch. The skipper informs you at this time that you are about halfway to Snake's Landing.

You nearly fall out of the boat as the mer spies something and grabs a punt pole and digs into the shoreline, moving the skiff into a cluster of rocks. You shiver a bit as the shadow of the rock cools the small alcove you are tucked into. You look questioningly at the mer who simply says "Smugglers." before sinking himself into the water.

Veles and yourself peer between the rocks and see a small inlet, not quite large enough to be a lagoon. Coming out of it you see a small barge, on it you see maybe 6 people aboard and some crates heavily tarped. Even from this distance the men seem on edge, they don't appear to have noticed the skiff and are not looking your direction.

You put a finger to your lips and sink back down into the recessed of the boat, snagging your rifle from the canvas bag it is stowed in bringing it up and resting it on the crevise. Veles meanwhile has pulled his blade and is staying perfectly still hand firmly on Dahz's lead. One turns towards you and you freeze in response. He must not have seen anything and just as you give a sigh of relief you notice they are driving the boat this way.

You have everything going for you. You have a damn near innocuous hiding place, the advantage of seeing them first, and the advantage of having your rifle trained on them. Then you notice the fact your receiver, though worn through use, is polished to a mirror sheen. A fact they have noticed as well. One glint as you attempt to hide it and a few shouted orders, and you see them pulling rifles off the deck and a hail of bullets heading your way. You duck down behind the rocks, thankful ones behind you are shorter, precluding any chance of a richochet. Veles in the meantime is fiddling with something with one hand, and is holding the struggling Dahz back with the other.

>Engagement plan?
>>
>>28181513
Well, if we slip into the water, we'll probably capsize the boat. this is a tricky one, on account of being pinned down.
Wave a hat out the opposite side of the rock from where we are with our tail, then when they take the bait, pop out and fire on whatever seems to stick out at you. If they have a lantern or any gunpowder visible, go for that. Otherwise, start picking hats off.

Oh, and are there any possible paths of retreat? We might want to simply move back along the rocks while putting up a fight, they might be dissuaded that way.

I'll answer the questions in the meantime.
The alcove you are in is shallow enough that you can get out of the boat with out capsizing it, however, by the formation of the rocks, you cannot easily slip over unto the mainland without being exposed to fire.
>>
>>28181980
well, getting out of the boat at least would be a huge help. Though, no going for a swim to get a better shot, because guns really don't like it when you do that.
On the plus side, nice warm water and rocks we can pop out of from any direction.

Heedless of the water on your clothes, you slip into the water as Veles ties the growling Dahz to the prow of the skiff. You hear him shuffling on the boat as you move from outcrop to outcrop looking for a vantage point. Judging by the fire, you can tell that the gunmen on the boat are using single shot rifles, likely military surplus. You pop out and take quick aimed shots at the assembly, 2 of the 4 shots you send finding their mark, knocking one man into the water, and hitting a second in the shoulder. As you reposition you see the form of Veles slipping further and further into the water as uncoils himself out of the boat, blade in hand. His head pops out of the water next to you and he gives you a nod. It is then he begins tracing a sigil into the flat of his blade with his finger, a light glow appearing along its edge before he takes a deep breath and dives underwater.

Canid, it might be a cool mechanic to keep track of the number of shots for a given weapon. In the case of the 'Golden Boy' Henry repeater rifle, the tube holds 16 shots. It looks like we've fired 4, so 12 are left.

Despite you moving from your vantage point, the remaining gunmen fall into a system of volleys, bullets peppering two at a time against where you where. You move to a second vantage point and just catch a glimpse of the mottled black and brown scales moving quickly across the coast floor. You duck your head down as the second volley comes, this time outright missing the rocks. It is here you hear some cursing and the sound of tearing metal. One of the remaining men's rifle has misfired, splintering in his hands. You see a flash of white as Veles reaches the bottom of the barge and let off a six shot volley in rapid succession to distract the men from what is happening below them, and again you score a hit, dropping another man to the ground leaving only 2 standing.

It is here you see a speeding flash of white and the reflection of scales in sunlight, with a mighty splash Veles launches himself out of the water, landing bodily on the man with the misfired gun. It is here you see the terrible and awesome sight that is a lamia, Fangs bared in a wicked grin, spines protruding, and the claws on his left hand extended. It is here you notice what the shuffling in the boat earlier was about, as Veles is sans his shirt. It is here you see him bear down on the two left standing, one who faints dead away, and the second dives off the boat rifle in hand making a break for shore.

With the threat of a bullet riddled tail gone, you place your rifle on the skiff next to Dahz, and dive into the water after the fleeing man. You bear down on him, slowed slightly by your dress dragging in the water before coiling around him. Ignoring his spluttering protests, you meander your way back to the barge, heaving him onto the deck into the waiting arms of Veles. Veles busies himself with tying the three survivors up and fishes the body of one of the others out of the water. You busy yourself with dragging the skiff (The mer long since ditching you once the bullets started flying) to the barge and tying it off. Dahz moves from skiff to barge and approaches the tied up three, sitting just out of their range and growling something fierce. As the adrenalin rush seeps away, you go around to the other side of the tarp and slump against the crates.
