Last time, On EDEN City Blues,
You are Sergeant Warrick Locke d’Angelo, MC1309018, on indefinite medical leave from UNAAF and today is the worst day of the month. As a mandatory part of the draft, you were given a neural implant to interface with communications. Yours doesn’t work properly, and the powers that be decided you make a better case study than a soldier. They gave you an apartment up in Beta, which you now share with an old friend, welfare stipends you spend on pain killers, no way back into the service, no way outside the walls of EDEN again, and nothing to do with your life.

But then a man by the name of Fenix appeared and began to spread gifts laced with treason. Through your personal investigations to uncover his interest in you, you found his work in Myst, and watched as others spread the Twilight Keys. You unleashed spider on the net to find more information on him, and were found by General Chase, commander of the Military Police and de facto ruler of EDEN.

He offered you a job.

You refused.
>>
And now for tonight’s installment,
You’re back in Afterlife, still using your Twi avatar. There are a few other clients, but it may as well just be you and Barry. You swirl your whiskey around in the air, the surface tension keeping it together as it floats. “So let’s recap, shall we?” Barry says as he spreads his hands across the counter.

“You made an avatar of the hooker who was hired to pretend to be a hooker and give you an invitation to this Fenix guy, which you are trying to use to get answers out of the people who put you in contact with her because you are investigating Fenix out of curiosity. But now the military is investigating him for treason, and they offered you a job which you refused. Meanwhile, someone else, and not you, hacked into my servers for Afterlife using the exact admin recognition that you use, and is doing something with it, but neither of us have any idea what?”

“Sounds about right,” you say as you grab the ball of whiskey out of the air and sip on it.

>Say something.
>Leave and analyze your spider data.
>Leave and go somewhere.

>Say something.
"Well, it could either be Fenix or one of his associates, like the strange middle eastern man. If you don't have any useful information at the moment, then i should begin to analyse the Data from my spiders."
>>
You rub your eyes and check the time, 0432. With a sigh, you dismiss the time and turn back to your roommate. “So, it could be Fenix or one of his associates. I kind of doubt someone else would just jump on you at this time. Whatever they’re doing though, it’ll stop in like, three hours. Which,” you say as you tilt your head from side to side, “Is admittedly probably enough time to do whatever they want with your system.”

“I already have Afterlife running on a rented server, I think I’m just going to cut it off and rip into it. But fuck if I’m not tired,” Barry says, pulling his hair from his face and yawning.
“You mean I might see you in person before poker? This is amazing. This never happens!” you respond, smirking.

“Fuck off Warrick.”

“Actually I kind of have to. I’ve spared just about all the time I can for you, so unless you uncovered anything while I was faffing about, I have to get going,” you say as you flick your whiskey away and stand up. You can still feel the stiffness in your actual body, prompting you to stretch, but it of course doesn’t help.

“One of my usuals drifted back here a bit ago. Before leaving he said they were all hanging out in the oasis in Myst. That said, I’m really surprised that you didn’t go to Somme.”

“Right then, thanks. See ya,” you say before logging off.

The dull glow from Gamma fighting through your window is the only source of light in your apartment, coloring the grey walls even darker. When you had first came in, you had turned the lights on, but the strain was too much for your eyes and you had been forced to turn them off.

This update will take a moment, I forgot to do my proper math. Rest assured though, there will be math in this cyberpunk
>>
The most straightforward approach for you at this point, is analyzing the data you gathered with your spiders. Going to people or chasing rumors might get you somewhere, but you have data. You wake up your desktop and quickly transfer over the data gathered by your spiders and start crunching it. Among the metrics you have, you have the time the data was created, the generation marker on the keys, what level in Eden they were generated in, and the servers where they are being produced in.

The first thing you do is try to set up a table for the time it’s taking for them to be produced. As the Middle Eastern man said though, the generation one keys are being produced randomly around Eden on a fixed schedule. Each of those keys on average are producing generation two keys at a much higher rate, which are producing gen three keys, and so on. Statistical variation and such means you can’t get an exact analytical solution to it, especially since you’re trying to model human behavior and not factoring in interest in the keys with people purposefully seeking them out, so you try to figure in a simple exponential model.

When you finish crunching, you stare at the screen for a moment. There are about a hundred thousand keys right now. In two days, half a billion people will have a Twilight Key.

When you plot them on a map of Eden, it’s almost entirely the residents of Gamma level that are getting these keys.

When you plot them by networking connections, a web of keys springs up, infesting Eden like an overgrown fungus, tying everything together and burdening the structure with its weight.

And every generation one key has a thin strand of connection weaving through the maze of Eden, all the way back to you. You lean back in your chair and stare in amazement.

>Keep analyzing the numbers.
>Pull Barry over.
>Contact someone.
>Enter Myst.
>Enter Somme.
>Other
>>
>>28157780
> keep analyzing the numb3rs
>>
You dive back into the numbers and keep digging. The spiders weren’t perfect, they didn’t catch everything, but they should have caught patterns, something. The gen two and up keys follow no pattern whatsoever, they seem to just be completely autonomous. They were released into the Net and they never looked back, merely following the most likely path of spread, through the most heavily used simulations. Of note, Somme is producing hands down the fastest.

But that’s simply because of that taunt, the rumor that you can upgrade them. Somme must have so much traffic right now it can barely run. It’s the generation one keys that could have a pattern. But looking at them, the Middle Eastern man was right, it’s an even distribution with no rhyme or reason to it except population density. Gamma is getting about half the keys, Delta a quarter, and the rest are split between Beta and Alpha. Even a few military officers seem to have been given gen one keys.

But they do have one thing in common, where they were connected with when the data was generated. Every one of them was being contacted by Afterlife. The bastard wasn’t even using a proxy.

It’s almost six in the morning. The power stops at eight.

>Just rip into Afterlife on your own.
>Get to Somme before your opportunity is gone.

You stretch and crack all of your stiff muscles, and pull up your augment menu. When forcing access to computer systems, even ones you actually do have access to, it’s always better to use your neural implant. You’re recognized as an admin so nothing triggers when you access things, and the corrosive effect on the data means no one is ever quite sure what you did when you went in. If they know what to look for, they can usually tell it was you, but they have never caught you on it.

Afterlife never goes down. Ever. Aside from you, Barry, and Chase, no one even knows where it’s housed either. Barry makes enough money through it that he can afford to rent a backup server on the other side of Eden that he boots up whenever a blackout is imminent. The real Afterlife has been down for two or three days most likely, so no one can match up the switch with when the blackouts occur. He also switches over randomly to further throw them off. If his competition were to find out who he is, they’d find a way to destroy him, so secrecy has been his friend. One of the main reasons he uses the Lilith avatar as well.

Until now, no one had ever hacked into Afterlife. You had personally layered on countless layers of redundant firewalls, some of which may or may not have been stolen from the military, and walled it up, never to be found. But Fenix had ripped through them like they were made of rice paper.

All of the code and access panels appear in your virtual field and you start swiping them around and mentally writing and using them as fast as you can think. When you start pouring through the code and the networking logs and everything else to catch him, someone says something. “You could have just asked you know.” You jump and spin around. Fenix is leaning against your wall, in the same shadowy avatar that you saw him in the first time. “Although I really should apologize to Lilith for using her hardware like this.”

You sneer at him. “Fucking quaz.”

He tilts his head at you. “Did you just call me a quaz?”

“Yeah, I did. You fucking quaz. How the fuck was I supposed to ask you? I’ve been hunting you down to figure out what the hell you’re doing, because you’re apparently the hottest thing since the Gihon line quenched. And you’ve been fucking nowhere. Now you show up all pretentious?” you ask as you stand up and point at him.

“I was hoping that you would figure out who I am. If you know who I am, you would have had no trouble asking me anything you desired,” he replies. Another copy of his avatar blinks into existence behind you. “I may appear to be in many places at once,” they say as a third appears in your kitchen. “But I’m really just in one place. I can’t leave afterall.”

“So what the hell are you doing?” you ask as you turn to look at all of them in turn.

“What do you think I’m doing?”

“Don’t answer in circles you quaz.”

“Tell me what you think I’m doing and I will correct you as I see fit. I’m more than happy to be of service to you, but of course, there can be no spoilers. I understand you played with my toys in Zero-G? You also earned a Knight Weapon from beating Tetra, although I was rather disappointed that you resorted to changing your stats. Hassan was most distraught as well. Your little spiders were interesting as well, but they’re only as good as the one that reads them. And of course there is the military’s concern with my activities. So, surely you have some idea what I’m trying to do, don’t you?” He asks as his duplicates walk over to him and merge into one.

You purse your lips and sit back down as you stare at him. You act as if you’re mulling over your words, but instead you message Barry through your augment menu to backtrace the connection Fenix is using to talk to you.

“Why are you taking so long to respond Warrick? Your edge hasn’t dulled so much that you can’t put these things together, has it? You’re the best around, you’re a soldier, an Ace in the War Games, a survivor, a fighter. No one was ever able to take you down. But now your tongue is tied?” Fenix asks as he stands up and looms over you, his avatar growing slightly in size.

“Don’t give me that shit. You have me running in circles trying to piece together things that only make sense when you know what you’re looking for. And why the hell do you have such an interest in me?” you ask as you steeple your fingers together and watch him.

Fenix sighs and rolls his head back as he starts pacing through your room. “Because you’re the one! You’re the one who has to do this! I know you’re better than this Warrick. Or rather you were. You were better than this. Don’t tell me that you’ve been so consumed by apathy that you’ve become incompetent,” he says as he slams his fist against the wall and stares at you. Streams of white mist are pouring from his eyes and floating into the air.

His words bite at you and burn, but you don’t rise to meet him. “Look at yourself Warrick. Look at the life you live. You exist, you do not live. You don’t make a single important decision, ever. You eat the food you’re given, you live where you’re allotted, you cheat to win at everything you do. You do not live Warrick. You are merely existing,” Fenix says as he paces around your bed, staring at you.

“Look out that window. Look at the city you see,” he shouts as he points out the window. One billion people are trapped in here, chained down with the illusions of freedoms. Freedom of press controlled by the military. Freedom of assembly at the whims of riot control. Mercantilism dressed up as capitalism. And the only ones that would stand up to oppose this are drafted into the military and taken away. Eden is nothing but a prison of apathy.”

“You are supposed to be different. You’ve been outside these walls and dragged back. You should know these chains for what they are! Yet you sit here, uncaring. You’re pathetic Warrick,” Fenix sneers as you finally get a message from Barry.

“No one but you is connected to Afterlife as far as I can tell, but you’re corroding most of my data.”

Maybe Fenix is a part of coding in Eve, created to monitor the net and stay dormant or whatever. That part of data was repressed and they tried to code it out or something, but it didnt work and just became lost in the net. That's why he can't be monitored, and can control the net. Idk what the skeleton keys do, but im pretty sure they do something bad as opposed to good.

I think its Eve because Fenix said
>“I was hoping that you would figure out who I am. If you know who I am, you would have had no trouble asking me anything you desired

And has apparently been observing us for a while.

Does this make sense? But then what do we say if we are wrong we will look retarded
>>
>>28159669
But we have had a glimpse into Eve's mind(CPU? MOTHERBOARD?) and didnt see anything about skeleton keys, but there was a point when we saw she had done things against her programmers wills. But why would a huge computer want people to revolt or have freedom?

I don't want to include Czar or whatever in my thought process, because we haven't learned much about it. It could be the guy in charge anyway, but I doubt it.

You lean forward and open your mouth to say something, but can’t find the words you need to express yourself. “No. No man, that’s not right. It’s not like that at all. I’m here in Beta because my other choices suck in comparison. And I’m still a soldier, if a superior officer tells me to do something, then I obey. That’s how the military works.”

“You’re not a soldier Warrick. Stop lying to yourself. You’re a test experiment. They ripped your skull open and forced an untested implant into your brain and now they’re just watching you until you die from it. You’re just a number in their datasheet, nothing more. You used to be a man.”

“Fuck you, you’re probably just a fucking AI. I don’t want to hear this shit from a program!” you shout as you jump out of your chair.

“You think I’m just an AI? I am the most human in this entire city. I look around and see stagnation, and I am working to change it. Everyone else is just accepting it as the world rots around them. If you don’t understand why this needs to change, why don’t you dig up the economic statistics? Or find a CZAR farm, or take a stroll through Gamma. “Bastard.” You drop back into your seat and slam your fist on your desk hard enough to almost knock your monitor over. “Where did he go,” you ask yourself as you bring your attention back to Afterlife. Barry had messed around in it, but the data was still there. With trained and fierce eyes you start ripping through it, callously deleting useless and corroded data to quicken your search. You can see every time Afterlife was used to send out a key, but cannot find anything.

So you bring your attention to your neural implant to find where he pinged you from to broadcast his avatar from. But everything is corroded. You can see the data that was generated by him contacting you, but your implant has scrambled and destroyed any order there was to the data, rendering it useless. His footprints burn away in his passing.

You growl in frustration as you scrape your fingers through your hair and hang your head. “Warrick, you’ve been up for too long. It’s subjecting your body to too much stress,” EVE says as she peers at you from your monitor

“I can handle the stress EVE,” you snap back. Her connection shuts off, leaving you alone in your room.

You grab your Kent EMU and log into the Net. You load up the coordinate for Somme and connect. You notice a large delay in response from the server, but you eventually connect. You step out in the back of the red base. There are thousands of people running around the armory. Several people are shouting out coordination orders, trying to rally the people together like a real military outfit, but are but wailing voices in a torrent of madness.

You glance down and see that your wardrobe was automatically changed to military fatigues, and a gasmask is on your face although it doesn’t actually impede your vision. Red bands wrap around your arms and run down your back, the people on the other side of the trenches will have blue bands.

Somme has been in a balance for years, in one continuous battle. People log in, they fight they get their own personal stats, but the war is never one. Sometimes the rules change, like respawn time, ordinance strikes, kuzuri, lockdown mode, but one rule has always persisted. If you get killed, you’ll respawn on the losing side. There was never any teamwork, and if one side ever got an advantage, it was such a slog to victory that they would bleed off players until they were losing again.

A massive banner is hanging in the base. “No Team Switching.”

If there’s no team switching, the only way to balance the sides and rag out the struggle would be by putting all newcomers on the losing side. With little rush to get out to the front lines and get yourself shot to death using outdated military simulations, you merely join the stream of bodies rushing about. You glance back in time to see your home sim vanish.

Groups of people are milling about talking with one another. You overhear them discussing everything from how to aim a gun, the Nagasaki concert, random gossip, and of course Twilight Keys. You edge up to a group just as one of them starts explaining what he knows. “The winners here will get their Twilight Key upgraded, right? You all have Twilight Keys? Right? I can get you one after this if you need to but that’s beside the point. The devs are in cahoots with the guy making these keys and he got them to change the rules, so this unwinnable game is totally winnable now. Don’t bother going out now though, because it’s Blue’s turn with the Kuzuri’s, you’ll just get killed. We’ll take them down soon enough. I’m going to go up the cliffs and flank them, I need every one of you to follow me and give me back up, are you with me?”

You slink away from that group and walk over to the weapon racks to listen in on another group.

“You know this is just a publicity stunt for Somme right? Their popularity had been dropping, so now they’re pulling this crap to get more people in.”

“Are you complaining? This is the best action it’s had in months!”

You literally can’t go out there without getting killed by any of the dozens of sharpshooters holed up in the back killing anyone who makes any gains. There are too many redundancies in the unwinnability of Somme. This will never end and you know it!”

“So? It’s fun to go out there through the tunnels with a shotgun and get in brawls with people. You never get to do this otherwise.”

“But this is bullshit. It was getting better as it got less people in it because you could have actual tactics instead of human waves.”

“You’re just mad because you think your key won’t get upgraded.”

“Yeah, well fuck you,” the one says before shooting his friend in the gut. A banner appears above his head labeling him a team killer, and a moment later his head explodes and both corpses disappear.

You grab a sniper rifle, an assault rifle, a grenade bandolier, and a machine pistol and head out on your own. The battlefield is hell, if it weren’t all simulated. Mud and blood are everywhere being thrown to the sky by explosions, gunfire, screaming players, and kuzuri. The map is a network of trenches, underground tunnels, cliff passes, pillboxes, landmines, razorwire, and corpses. Rather than go directly to the front line, you skirt the edge and gain a height advantage so you can oversee the battlefield.

Two kuzuri are slaughtering the trenchworkers, so you put a few armor piercing rounds through their computers and down them, but your side makes little advancement. The opposing snipers are keeping everyone down or dead, but then you see the group that went to flank. They’re a good ways behind enemy lines and killing everyone in their way. The unstructured nature of the game means that no one can communicate in Blue that they’ve been infiltrated, and they’re able to go all the way back before they start getting picked off by the snipers. So you lend your aide in countersniping. The distance is quite a bit beyond anything you ever practiced at, and players always move faster than your targets, but you manage to clean out all of the snipers and take them out when they try to reposition.

Eventually though, the flanking team get slaughtered, and the back and forth returns to a standstill. Just as you run out of sniper ammo however, the skies light up Sirens go off and everyone ducks for cover. You scramble to find safety before the ordinance drop, but get caught by debris and killed. You respawn and grab the same loadout, after a substantial delay due to your kill streak, and are greeted by fear itself. A Kaiju was given to Blue team.

>>
Eden only developed the Kaiju, they were used in Europe when the Castles declared war on one another over territorial rights. It’s a hexapodal all-terrain vehicle with a nuclear reactor powering it, a rapid fire rail gun on top, and is twenty meters tall, and longer still. The armor surrounding it’s entire body provides protection for dozens of soldiers to ride atop of and rain hell down on those below them. It was designed to be almost invincible to any attack from below, the only way to defeat it being an attack from above. But you don’t have a helicopter.

You expend several lives alongside hundreds of other Red players as Blue pushes forward with the Kaiju at the head. Eventually, they smash down the gates to your base and an announcement goes through the entire simulation. “Rebuttal mode. Red has no respawns.” And every loadout spawns for both teams. Kaiju, kuzuri, ordinance strikes, missile batteries, cloaking, ATVs, and more.
You take down the Kaiju, but have to make the slog back to Blue base, without dying.

From the wreckage of the Kaiju you helped destroy, you sprint back to your own Kaiju. By the time you get there, someone else has already taken control of it, so you run past and grab cloaking for yourself and boot up a transport kuzuri. As one wave, all of Red moves forward The initial gains you made in the destruction of the Kaiju are for little gain however, as their new Kaiju quickly intercepts your own and both end up destroyed. A good ordinance strike wipes out a surge of Blue and opens up a gap for you to push through and get behind enemy lines. Blue spends their ordinance strike as soon as you’re out of the blast zone though, and gains back most of the distance they lost.
You crank up your cloaking and set your kuzuri to autonomous attack. Cut off from the rest of your team, you take the fight on yourself. The cloaking device manages to obscure you and let you hide whenever you need to reload, and keeps the snipers from picking you out as you march down trench after trench shooting down the opposition. Missile strikes land around you, and you can hear your team closing in behind you as you near their base, but Blue team is still respawning, and Red is almost at half strength.

You switch to your grenade launcher and stand atop a pillbox to oversee several chokepoints at once. You kill dozens and dozens of them, but you’re simply too close to their respawn with too limited ammo. You make a few gains, then manage to hold them back, but slowly your teammates get killed off. The momentum changes, all of your special equipment gets destroyed. Your position is overrun, your team routed and slaughtered.

You’re the last man standing, but you’ve been forced into a corner, and they control the entire map.

Try to hide as long as possible just to piss them off. I'm assuming they won't win until everyone on the other team is dead.

You're in Rebuttal Mode because Blue team captured your base. The losing team, you, is allowed one rebuttal, where they can still win if they sweep through and capture Blue base, but the restriction is that you don't get to respawn. One life to win it all. Now you're the only life left.

26 through

You shake your head, ignore the time, and start fighting your way back through to the base. You use the confusion in communications to your advantage, and that none of the heavy ordinance is resapwning. The players keep coming back, but only the ones you kill have any idea where you are, and the remains of your cloaking lets you slip through and push on to their base, alone. You finally make it to a side entrance, shoot the group guarding it, and are about to sneak in when another alert comes across the Sim. “Sudden Death. Full Artillery Barrage.”
All of Blue starts retreating to either base to escape the oncoming destruction. You close the door behind yourself as the rain of explosions set in, trying to eradicate Red team, but you’re already inside, and the objective point is somewhere close.

You start sneaking through the base, trying to find the objective point. The entire place is crawling with players. Most of which are just waiting, expecting you to die outside, but a few are messing around, running about the complex. You see a couple of them team killing to pass the time, laughing as their heads explode.

The objective is deep in the complex of the base, in the most heavily defended portion. You kill the guards on the walk down without attracting any attention to yourself, and make it all the way there. The base is filled with super computers and other important things that the designers decided to put there. Probably fifty players are all camped around it though, and your cloaking finally cuts out.

A wall of lead and explosives slams into you, ripping you apart and killing most of the players in the process. You’re ejected from Somme just as the victory fanfare and confetti starts. “Fuck!” you roar as you wake back up in your apartment and throw your EMU against the wall. “FUCK.”

Yes, its meant positiv. So far i would give the quest 8/10 , the only negative thing being that we get sidetracked and "distracted" to easy by entertaining sidequests.

Anyone else notice that Fenix knew the layout of the room and was walking around in it, pointing at things? When it was pointed out that EVE could only fake that?

its EVE. Its all over. We're onto you static blue. Fenix is EVE trying to revive Eden from its ashes.

But with an F because shes feminine
>>
>>28171416
So when do we build her a robo body?
>>
>>28169556
>>28171416

I think its more than that.

Some of the earlier threads have some dichotomy in eve - some parts of her that are too smart for her own good.

I think this is her Sleeper Agent answer to being shackled and not allowed to know where her processing substrates are.

The big key/link is the Supercomputer thing from last thread

>“This is quite concerning, because that area is currently being used to house certain super computers. If they were to be compromised, Eden would be in a very dire position. This represents a breach in city security, and a potential terrorist threat. I need you to tell me everything you know,” General Chase orders, his smile gone.

And since EVE isn't allowed to know where her own processing stuff is/doing/taking places, any sort of agent running there(but not part of her) is by nature above her own security layer.

So.... Yeah, i think a good idea may be that she has a tagalong

Also, way to blow the negotiations with fenix.
