You are a creature. Your goal is to eventually evolve into a swarm of alien locusts, a la the Tyranids. They're everywhere, pretty much a cliche at this point. But something that's never looked into is where they came from, how they started. In this quest you will be playing as a creature that can absorb the DNA from other living beings, by consuming them at first, and then increasingly more complex ways the more you evolve towards becoming a Hive. You are in the ocean, and smaller than a human can see, at this moment. But what type of creature are you?

Predation - You are slick, and covered in barbs, with a hidden mouth that quickly morphs into a large, tentacled one, lined with spikes. At this cost, you die easily, you might want to multiply and form a pack as soon as possible.

Protection - You are covered in the closest thing to armor you can have at this stage, and your body is mildly toxic. You can quickly get away from slow moving predators, but at this cost, your only offense is your small mouth, full of barbs.

Thought - You are very strange, as you already think as larger animals do. You can use smarter methods of attacking enemies, and have clever ways to evade them. Destroys Boxed options, replacing them completely with free choice, the most practical vote will be chosen. However, you are very slow, and those methods of Evading I mentioned? They're mostly going up, down, or close enough to the predator to confuse them. You also come with stage 2 eyespots, allowing you to see everything around you during this stage.

Locomotion - You are agile, swift, small fins and many tendrils allow you to maneuver incredibly well, and you're unlikely to be consumed. You can also move up and down completely easily. However, because of this, you are unintelligent, having spawned with easy means to avoid death, and all options will be boxed until you move past this stage.

What path shall you choose?

You are floating about in the abyss, drifting, at the moment. Your surroundings show various other creatures, but many too small to yield DNA points. The larger ones are, as follows:

A larvae of some kind, most likely crustacean, with 8 small legs and two long graspers.

A group of oval-shaped crustaceans, with lines of three orange eyespots.

And a swarm of squid-like creatures, acting as one large one.

There are probably many more, but you cannot see much.

What will you do?

No, the lil' shoggoth we had last take was already somewhat evolved, which is why it already had some part blueprints. Now you'll have to absorb DNA from either other creatures or enigmatic events to get parts. Events will grant you strange, unnatural powers, which every horde of alien roaches needs. For example, Psionics, rapid multiplication, shapeshifting Creatures are a bit easier, as they almost always the part written in their DNA visible, but some otherwise normal seeming creatures may have more efficient parts, that cost more, of course.

Points - 15

Parts:

Here you can evolve parts onto your body, while they have many uses in this stage, when you evolve into the Ocean Stage, they will determine your form. You can have multiple forms at once, so, if you want, you can farm around, even when you reach 50 Points to evolve, to get at most 2 forms. You can also discard Parts when you no longer need them, refunding half the DNA Points.

THOUGHT - Graspers(Leads to Crustacean Form): Allows grasping of objects, such as smaller creatures, and easier means of combating larger ones. Can spend 5 DNA points to heal if damaged. Essential in some events. 20 points.

LOCOMOTION - Tendrils(Leads to Cephalopod form): Makes your quicker, and allows you to slowly drift downwards as well. Can be used to latch onto larger creatures. Draining 50 DNA from latched creatures will grant you the Parasite trait, which will make you feed off larger beings until you evolve onto land, then you will need to meet the criteria for Parasite II. 5 points.

You cocoon yourself. It takes about twelve minutes to convert the DNA into Tendrils, when you return, you notice the eye-lined creatures are gone. You begin drifting by default.

As you drift, something Peculiar happens. You seem to run into a swarm of nanobots, they re-outfit you, granting you a new part, called Split Colony, which grants you the rapid multiplication Ability. It Costs 25 Points, and only works for this stage, once you evolve to Ocean stage, it will merely speed regeneration.

You eventually find a populated area of the ocean.

Two Foranth Larvae are here.

A jellyfish, massive to you, tiny to a human, is also present, attempting to fight it would be suicide.

More Eye-lined Creatures are present.

A blood red crustacean seems to be floating by, however, it is dead, and being fed on by a Squid Swarm.

Latching is simply attaching to a creature and draining DNA using it. You can either feed on the creature itself's DNA, or feed on half the DNA of its prey. it will also, by default, provide nutrients.

You move towards the eye Creatures, when you begin to get close, they launch at you, beginning to tear you apart. Their jaws are surprisingly evolved, being closer to an insect's than a plankton's. They rip through your armor, and you are heavily wounded. After a while, the Toxin gets them to run off. You need Nutrients fast to survive.

The Three Hive Creeds will guide your evolution into a hive. Various actions trigger them, and each grant two special traits if focused on, once you reach Hive Stage. They are, as follows

FIEND:
Comparable to: The Zerg, Starcraft
The path of the Fiend is a corrupt one, and involves showing no mercy at all, excessive use of venom and cruel tactics strengthens this Creed. The traits Parasite II-IV, Vampire I-V, and Domination I-III are born of this Creed. Once you become a hive, following the Fiend creed will grant you the ability to assimilate other species into your brood, as well as natural Psionics. Stealth is highly valued.

FERAL:
Comparable to: The Tyranids, Warhammer 40k
The path of the Feral is a monstrous one, and involves spreading as far as you can, and amassing DNA and nutrients. Ferals cannot obtain individuality, and only serve you, the hive mind. While this makes commanding your legions easy, Individual are incredibly useful. The traits Devourer I-V, Breeder I-III, and Chemical I-IV are born of this Creed. Following the Feral creed will you grant you total hive dominance and instant interstellar travel. Pure strength is highly valued.

FRIENDLY:
Comparable to: Generally Friendly insectoid races
The path of the friendly is contradictory to the Quest's main goal (complete brood domination), but is still around if you ever want to be a white knight. Symbiosis I-II, Herd I-VI, and Craft I-IV are born of Friendly. Following the Friendly Creed will grant you complete individuality, making you simply an unseen leader in the back of their brains and the ability to use tools without absorbing it from conquered species.

You have gathered the maximum amount of parts you can for this stage, there are around 3 more Origin Parts to be found, but your current build will allow you to survive. The apex predator of Ocean Stage is the Korodok, and if you're consumed by Korodok, there's no real stopping it. The Benefits, however, are the fact you are not the only of your brood anymore, and you achieve and additional STRAIN SLOT, which you will have no direct control over, but can assign a role, such as parasitic breeding, which creates ocean facehuggers, or Guards, which are smaller versions of your brood that will protect you with their life. To make the first Brood strain, you need another 50 DNA, you cannot advance towards land without it.

You cannot add the part the nanobots gave you, as that was an event part, and you died at the hands of the Foranth earlier. However, you can find similar parts with luck.

!Attack with Graspers!
It's time to use them.

>>28172360

Hmm. Attack with Graspers? Or try to outdo the parasite with our parasitism?

Graspers, it'll wrest it off of us and render it impotent and also boost the THOUGHT upgrade side of things.

You manage to push the Shillesk off, but something's happening...

Two the Shillesk's legs glow orange, before they suddenly turn into Graspers, and it becomes Purple in coloration.

It grabs onto your claws with its claws, and tries to force its proboscis back into your chasis.

!Try to overpower!

In a final attempt, you send the best to the Kwagor. The monstrous apex predator of the Origin stage's jaw quickly snaps around your rival, crushing it. It did not have the luck you did when it died. Judging by the other's death, this means you have successfully destroyed your only rival in this world.

You have lost a large amount of vitals, and in a fit of delirium brought on by the Proboscis, you automatically heal, losing teen DNA to fully reconstitute yourself.

40 DNA.

The Kwagors have noted your presence, and you cannot latch.

Fuck it, let's evolve to the next stage, let's reconstruct ourselves after draining.

Might as well evolve. Not much else to gain right now.

I'm assuming that was '10 DNA'? If so, shouldn't we have more? We got that lucky roll from the red stone after all.

Also, its DNA/part will be immensely valuable.

Evole
i vote (if we can, oh kind and mercyfull op :)) to evolve to something highly poisonous and have bait, meaning a little distration thing to hold out in front of us to distract with and line up the fatal attack - FOR FIENDS! FOR FUCKERY!

Float downwards while decreasing our threat posture/pretending to be injured, then when it moves in to attack us quickly grasp it using our tendrils/pincers and flip up onto its back as we suck the lifeblood from it?
>>
>>28172700
Nigga, his jaws are about the same size as us.
I think.
>>
Rolled 99

>>28172731

We could drift and live to fight another day.

Or maybe Morph could provide us some environmental info and a description of the Kwagor to work with?
>>
>>28172700
Plus manuevering does us little good here, since the shroud of piranha around it can still reach us. They've shown at least that they were capable of easily ripping through our previous armour, and a horde of these ones might just be able to finish us.

...Buggerit. Evolve. Big Red is probably the Champion form of Kwagor-mon anyway.
>>
>>28172584
evolve
>>
>>28172764
Kwagors have no legs. they are in a general Oval-Like shape. They have a line of eyes on their upper body. This large one's Jaws is the size of your entire body, and then some.

>>28172635
You lost ten DNA to the Shillesk, and then spent ten more in delirium, leaving you with 140 DNA< you then obtained 40 DNA from killing it, due to being of technically the same species.

You have 180 DNA.
>>
>>28172687
kinda new, more bone tired and have to start writing my uni project again in a few hours. im always acting like a noob on sugerhigh in these situations, to fight the boredom of early mornings

I think we shouldn't hold on.

We don't lose all aquired DNA with stage progression, right? Or, at least, does evolving to next stage with lots of DNA makes us stronger?
>>
>>28172785
fuck it. evolve

You Enter a Grand Cocoon.

Slowly, it branches. Over the days, it branches, forming more cocoon, over the months, it branches, forming more cocoons, over the years, it branches, forming more cocoons. You, and a hundred other minds, dream of widespread carnage of your brood.

You, and the rest of your brood, have been sleeping for a century. Now you emerge from your chrysalis, now the others emerge from their cocoons.

You may form a service strain.

Fiend:

Parasitic Breeding - Impregnates other creatures, will never need to worry about mating.

Parasitic Delusion - These parasites make enemies more Docile.

Dominion - A lesser strain that gathers plankton for you and sacrifices itself to you for DNA.

Feral:

Guard - Protects you and other members of your brood.

Reaper - Harvests Parts from corpses, but only if you find one. Can be used t find endstage parts incredibly early.

Hunter - Hunts food, feeds itself, merely a method of overtaking the seas

Parasitic breeding is chosen. Fashionable and practical.

Note: Parasite Fashion is Xenomorph Style

Now, Gameplay's changed a bit. Rather than controllign a single being like in origin, you overview the nest of your species. This isn't a hive, mind you, as only 14 of our species exists, at the moment.

You can send the females of your nest to gather food, DNA, or hunt for rares. Here is when you guys' rolling is really relevant, as it will determine the results.

Males: 5

Females: 9

Hunger Level: Filled

Breeding Level: N/A

Biome: Deep Sea Abyss

Command Food Hunt

Command DNA Hunt

Release Service Strains

Rare Hunt

What the FUCK am i reading
>>
>>28173313

Is it a D100? What's success and what's failure?

Do males and females matter with parasitic breeding? What is "release service strains"? What's a "rare hunt"?

>>28173328
Parasitic Breeding had 1 more vote than Reaper.

Females gather DNA,

Males hunt

Or, not.

Anyways, Males and Females are still around for a reason, which will be important near the endgame, but I don't care to spoil until then. Also, generally, several highly predatory group species have stronger females than males, or at least more active females.

Releasing the Service strains enable them to do their thing, which is being sea facehuggers. And yes, it is d100, the lower the roll the more damaging it is, but I will always choose the highest given roll.

Send the females out for food then I guess.

we're already full on food for the time being though, right? At least, going by the filled hunger level thingy. This isn't a formal bid for action but merely a suggestion that maybe we want to hunt down some more DNA or go on one of these mysterious rare hunts while we're all full...

btw OP cool quest
