You've always hated hospitals.

As you walk down the white and tan, sterile, boring hallway towards neurology, you can't help but feel a little contempt for them. People came here when they were hurt or sick, they don't need to be reminded of how dreary the situation is. Not that they can really liven up tuberculosis or a gunshot wound, but, hell, a few colors here and there wouldn't hurt. Would they?

You thrust your hands into your pockets, beret tucked into a shoulder epaulette on your BDU's. It's not really your fault she's here, is it? Was there something else you could've done? Could Booze Hound have taken the shot for her? Shit, if it had, wouldn't your company be sans CO at this point?

It's the past, you tell yourself. You won't ever have to relive it other than in dreams, and maybe drunken stories with the boys. It happened, and there's nothing you can do to change it. Not that you're accepting of it, though.

A few twisting turns later, after stopping to admire a mural or two of soldiers and witches being CASEVACed, you almost trip over the receptionist of Neurology. She's a tiny little thing, hair pulled into a tight bun behind her service greens.

“Help you, sir?”

“Uh, yeah. Captain Bishop looking for Colonel Weller? I'm here about one of my witches.”

She shuffles a few papers behind the navel-high retaining wall and makes a quick phone call. A few agonizing seconds later, she hands you a crude map.

“Colonel wants to see you in her office, sir. Hit the hall, bang a left, up the stairs, whip a u-ey, third door on the right. If you get lost just grab an orderly.” She says, smiling.

You thank her, follow her directions and quickly find yourself in front of an open door, a twenty-something witch sitting behind the desk in the office. Her familial ears perk towards you, those of a saint Bernard, before she looks up.

“Captain Bishop? Holly mentioned you were here. If I could have a quick word with you?”

[] “Yeah, that's me.”
[] “If it's all the same Colonel, I'd like to see my Top.”

>[] “Yeah, that's me.”

You lock eyes with the colonel, stiffening into the position of attention before replying with the formal 'yes ma'am' that's expected of you. Or at least, that you think is expected of you. She waves the gesture away, motioning for you to have a seat in front of her desk.

“It never gets easier, does it Captain?” She asks, shuffling some papers around. Her pen furiously signs a series of papers, each in the same spot (you think), before she drops the pen onto the pile and leans back, covering her face with her hands.

You cock an eyebrow. “Uh, ma'am?”

without looking at them, she points to the papers. “Paperwork. Bureaucracy.”

“Oh. No ma'am. But to be honest I'm not really an expert on the subject. I have a command staff above me that handles all that. I just do the fightin'.”

She leans back forward, settling her elbows on her desk after brushing a few strands of black hair out of her face. “Something I'm ever grateful for. Not being a combat witch can really wear on you when you see all the other ones come in.”

Your stomach knots. “You see a lot of combat witches here, ma'am?”

“No, thankfully. Not for any medical treatment, anyway. But when we do, it's always a very sobering experience.”

You nod at her words. “Yeah. I could see that.”

“So. Sargeant Rockfield.”

The knot tightens. “Yes ma'am.”

1/3 (I think)
>>
>>28182549

She sorts through the stack of papers before picking up a manilla folder, opening it, and leaves through the contents. “Well captain, it's not pretty, but we've got options here. When we got her in, she was seven different flavors of loopy. Couldn't remember a thing, wouldn't stop asking for orange juice, et cetera, et cetera. After we got a few cat scans and MRIs in, we learned that she -”

You steel yourself.

“ -'s possibly got some serious spinal damage going on. Definitely within the Thoracic region, though we couldn't pinpoint which vertebrae. From what the combat reports say hit her, she's lucky to be in a wheelchair. Once we got her under the knife, we figured out what it was. Captain, it'll be a miracle if she ever walks again. Paralyzed from the waist down.”

Colonel Weller's next words are completely silent. The world melts away from you, fading into a screen of white noise and darkness. No amount of preparation could've readied you for that. Your top sargeant, your order in the chaos of the enlisted, was paralyzed from the waist down. She'd never use her legs again.

You can't help but hate yourself for it. Nobody ever deserved that. Nicer to kill a man, you think. Your mind instantly snaps to that night in the desert. Norton's hulk of a tank. Patterson's limp form. Rockfield dashing to save her.

You force it out of your head. You have to.

2/3
>>
>>28182566

What seems like hours later, the world comes back into focus. Weller was still talking.

“-ews is, that there are options. I had a visit from a....um.... jolly man in a lab coat, who claims he couldn't give me his name. Told me to give you this after I looked it over. I have to say, as a medical procedure, I approve, but I'm not allowed to make that choice for anyone other than myself.”

She slides a fuckmassive three ring binder across her desk. It takes you both hands to pick it up and set it on your lap. It was time to get back in the gym, you think absently.

You thump the binder with a pair of fingers. “Any chance you can sum this up for me?”

Colonel Weller shakes her head. “I can tell you what it is, and what it says it'll do, but I couldn't sum it up at all.”

You crack open the front cover. “Good enough.”

The book details the workmanship and laboratory notes first and foremost, crediting the man behind most of your gear as well as a bio-medical research office in Detroit. Most of it goes way way way, WAY above your pay grade in it's description of interaction with the human body and implementation, but in summary -

“It's a bio-medical spinal clamp. It'd augment a normal human's capability, or in the case of Christina, it'd give her full use of her spine again. The only problem with it is that it's incredibly experimental. It's never been deployed in an American unit.

“Initially, the 803 was slated to start working with these, but that scientist claimed you needed it more. Said he really had to pull some strings.”

You close your eyes and silently thank the scientist, whoever it was.

Weller continues. “The only catch is that we can't force it on her. All we can do is present the option.”

“So let's go do that” you reply, firmly tucking the binder under an arm.

The colonel nods, walking with you to Rockfield's room. The two of you make small talk, though there isn't much time before you're at her door. Weller cracks the door open, closes it softly, and turns back to you.

“She's asleep, Captain. Though, she's been talking about nothing other than ARSOF, so this is one of those rare occasions where my humanity is overruling my professionalism. Want to get her up?”

“I'd really like to talk to my trooper, Colonel.”

She nods, and starts to open the door. A weathered hand quickly covers hers, before an all too familiar voice says “Let's give the girl a few more minutes. Join me for coffee, Captain?”

You look up to find a smiling doctor Light. In his free hand, a pair of styrofoam dunkin donuts coffee cups, one clearly offered to you.

You shuffle the book around in your arm before taking the cup. “Sure thing, doc. Ten minutes?”

He nods. “I'm sure you're plenty anxious to talk to your sergeant, but there are some things about the scorpion that I've got to tell you about.”

You cock an eyebrow. “The scorpion?”

The good doctor gestures towards the book.

“Ah.”

As you step outside into the crisp late-morning air, he takes a long pull from his cup before sitting on a bench. The foot traffic here is mostly doctors and nurse, though every once and again a soldier on crutches, in a wheelchair, or with an arm in a sling wanders past.

“It's a permanent solution to a temporary problem, captain. She'd be back in the fight in six months.”

He looks up at you. You sip your own coffee, contemplative.

“The scorpion would be with her for life.”

We have yet to visit a field hospital, where the medical-specced ones probably are. Goose is just a strike witch that can heal, like Miyafoogee or Georgette.

Putin was likely just using them on POWs. The soviets don't seem to be the kind to waste sparkles on prisoners, and if you're going to heal them for your secret plot, why not enhance them as well?

>[] “So we should push her away from it?”

You mimic his pull of the coffee. It's too sweet for you, but anything that helps keep you awake is good.

“So, we should push her away from the idea?”

Dr. Light shakes his head.

“I'm saying we should let her make her own decision. The scorpion would give her her legs back, sure. It'd also keep her in strikers. But the Achillies doesn't require a witch to be able to move around inside, just to be able to shield it and power the weapon. If she was comfortable with it, you could effectively use her in a crew the day after she got released from the hospital.

Of course, that doesn't change the fact that yes, she'd be paralyzed from the waist down still. And I know what you're thinking, that the healwitches could give her her spine back. And you'd be absolutely correct in thinking that, but don't forget that there's a war going on. Almost every healwitch in the United States are tied up with other assignments. It could take six to eight months to get her back in your unit at 100%. The scorpion would see her back with ARSOF before you deploy out of here.”

You mull the thought about in your mind.

“Captain, I'm not a combatant. I was not forged in the flames of war. I don't know what the best decision for your company would be in this situation, nor do I know what it would be for that girl. I'm just saying that there are more options than the augmentation here.”

>>
>>28185432

Top has done more than enough for her country, I say we should try to push her towards getting healed right.

Also people, remember that the scorpion is a PROTOTYPE. We have no idea what problems it could inflict on her.

You lean back, pondering the options.

“Tell me more about the scorpion.”

Doctor Light smiles and finishes his coffee before replying.

“It's incredible, captain. Truly incredible. The young lady who designed it and perfected it to where it can see a limited deployment is up for a Nobel.”

You can't help but be intrigued. “A peace prize for a combat enhancer?”

He smirks. “Think big picture, captain. Think about all the men and women who have a back injury that this would fix. If a man falls at work and becomes paralyzed, he now has an option to go back without paying the fees for a witch healer. If a child is hit by a car while chasing a ball into a street, he could get a scorpion and continue his life relatively uninhibited. It really is fantastic, what she's done.”

You frown. The more he talks about it, the better it sounds to you. “What're the downsides here, doc?”

The doctor looks away, rubbing his hands together to help protect from the cold.

“I have no idea, captain. The chimpanzees that were used in the first tests took to them spectacularly, with a 100% success rate. They were able to move more weight faster than their non-augmented counterparts. Those that weren't augmented displayed a sort of envy or jealousy, almost shunning the implanted subjects.

“Now armed with this knowledge, I -” he glances at his watch “- Have reached the end of my time here. I have other projects to go see, and Emily to make a dinner for. Just remember that there are other options, mister Bishop.”

“Thanks for the time, doc. Hope to see you again.” You reply, standing and offering your hand.

He stands, smiling, and shakes your hand before walking off the medical campus.

Back at Rockfield's room, Colonel Weller stands, talking with one of her aides or nurses. You can never tell in a military hospital, everyone just wears BDU's.

“Ah, glad to see you're back, captain. Shall we?” She asks, placing a hand on the door handle.

You nod, readying yourself for what you may see.

Which is nothing out of the ordinary.

Your top sergeant is in bed, drowsily looking out the window. Her room is on the top floor of the building, with a decent view of the woods outside. You can make out her shape underneath the blankets of her bed, but for the most part you can't see her injuries. You're used to not seeing her with makeup, so it comes as no surprise that she doesn't have any on this time either. She turns her head to you squinting to see who you are. Once she recognizes you, however, a smile works its way across her face.

“Captain!”

She pushes herself up in bed, very nearly knocking over the IV bags above her. Colonel Weller rushes to her side, grabbing a hold of the stand before it falls.

“It's so great to see you! How's the unit?! How are you!? Why are you wearing a uniform that's way too big for you?!

We forgot to ask how long the chimps have had the augments; neural damage might not manifest for a while after implantation.
>>
>>28186620
There wasn't any neural damage. I believe the implication was that those who are not augmented end up jealous of the capabilities of those who have the extra abilities. Might be wrong here.
>>
>>28186658
I think he's worried that there will be problems in the future.
>>
>>28186658
You're right, interesting enough something like this may pop up after the war with the Lazarus subjects.

I wonder if a bunch of people will make a group called Blue Cosmos

You could have at least picked a Purity organisation that wasn't a flaming caricature.

Purity First would be slightly more accurate in this instance anyway.

>[] “Good to see you too, Sarn't.”

You return her smile, pulling at your uniform.

“Yeah, it is a bit thin, isn't it? It's good to see you too, though, Sarn't.”

She gestures for you to come closer to her before attempting to crush your windpipe with a hug.

“Fuck – chris – I – need - that – to – breathe!” You wheeze out in short breaths, the best she'll allow you to get.

She loosens her death grip on your neck, motioning toward the chair in the corner.

The two of you catch up, her telling you of what she can remember of the night that caused her to be here in the first place, and you pulling her up to speed on the company's movements.

“Right now, sarn't, we're kind of in a waiting pattern. We've been training on the new vehicles, but we haven't received orders yet.”

“Don't leave without me, captain.” She says, fire in her eyes.

You chuckle. “That's gonna be hard with you in a wheelchair, Christina.”

“Promise me. Give me your word you won't leave without me.”

“alright, alright, we won't go without you.” You say, relenting.

“Good. Those bastards took something from me, and I want it back, God willing.”

“Hey, speaking of you coming back, I want to know what you want to do.”

“Uh, sir? I'm not sure I understand.”

You set the monolithic binder on her side table. “This is information on a bio-mechanical augmentation that doctor Light just gave me via Colonel Weller. It'd get you back in the fight in full capacity in a few weeks.”
>>
>>28186929

She reaches for the book before you grab her wrist.

“It's also incredibly experimental. You'd be the first American to have it. Ever. And there are other options.”

“Which are?”

“The Achilles has an inbuilt spot for a witch. As long as you can interface with a striker, you can help on a crew inside the vehicle. We could take you back as soon as the hospital clears you. Then all we would have to do is wait for a Healwitch to become available the same time we're stateside to get you back to 100%.

“If nothing else, top, read the book and make an educated decision.”

She nods, pulling the book onto her lap. “I'll do that captain. I don't know what the Lord would think of me getting a machine grafted onto my body, but I want to get back more at the reds than anything else. What is it Nicky always says? Better to beg forgiveness than ask permission?” Rockfield grins.

“Heh. Something like that, top. Something like that.”

You spend the rest of the day with her before Weller kicks you out of her room for the night. Heading back to the hotel, you sit in silence, wondering what her choice would be. Well, that, and hopefully someone would tell you.
>>
>>28186788

Except that's more or less what happened with Blue Cosmos. People getting jealous with each other over their enhanced abilities. Of course Blue Cosmos took it to extremes, but it isn't like there's not a precedent for extremist groups within the same vein...
>>
And that's it for the night!

Felt good to be back in the saddle again, hopefully I can run more often in the future. Keep your eyes on Ghost's threads and my twitter. I'll keep you guys posted on the next run.

Short thread, yes, but It's been so long!
I'm not used to these endurance runs anymore. Gotta build my tolerance back up. haha

Problem is, BC didn't really address the whole transhumanist issue in any meaningful way other than "We're a caricature of lunatic racists", before cutting back to more clipshows, stock footage and protagonists screaming each other's names.

Now, granted, they do resemble the mentioned jealous chimps very well, but still.
>>
>>28187265

I thought it was pretty simple myself.

Murder all said tranhumanists, just like the good old Nazis. And it's not like they didn't have any time to degenerate into said lunatics, this issue has been boiling for around 50 years after all.
>>
>>28187339
The issue pre-dates SEED's first episode with the first boil over point being the first cordinator being assasinated.

There's similar Jealousy in UC but it's more subdued and ofter under the bigger thing of discrimination against Spacenoids. It's as such taht Amuro, who loyally fought for the federation, had his career stunted just because he was a newtype.

Though this attitude ultimately backfired down the line as the federation by late UC era became increasingly irrevelant in the big struggles.
>>
>>28187014
WHEN IS THE NEXT TIME MOUSE! WE WANT MORE!
>>
>>28187339
It was simple, yeah. Too simple.

I mean, sure, the show is about giant robots, but you'd think they could expand a bit more on the motivations and history of the conflict and antagonists instead of more LOL STOCK FOOTAGE
>>
>>28187588
its SEED they blew the budget on shitty Jpop stars
>>
>>28187588
They wasted the promising stuff with a subpar writer (director's wife) and flashy pretty stuff. It basically made Gundam Wing look closer to UC.
