Last time, On EDEN City Blues,
You are Sergeant Warrick Locke d’Angelo, MC1309018, on indefinite medical leave from UNAAF and today is the worst day of the month. As a mandatory part of the draft, you were given a neural implant to interface with communications. Yours doesn’t work properly, and the powers that be decided you make a better case study than a soldier. They gave you an apartment up in Beta, which you now share with an old friend, welfare stipends you spend on pain killers, no way back into the service, no way outside the walls of EDEN again, and nothing to do with your life.

You have been hunting down the man known as Fenix, who is wanted for terrorist activities and treason. General Chase, commander of the military police, offered you a job, a way out of your stagnant life.

You refused.

Fenix confronted you and spoke of his idealogy. He tried to bring you to his side.

You refused.

You tried to continue down your own path, hunting down Fenix.

You lost.
>>
And now for tonight’s installment of EDEN City Blues,
“It ain’t the hottest idea to come in for a drink, when you’re staggering around on the very brink. Looking at you I can see, that your head is getting pretty sick. So take it from me, what you need is something on your dick. Take a seat and a drag on that blunt, and I’ll get you someone in heat with a bit of,”

“Hey.”

The bartender’s words are dancing around in your head and the lights above you swirl to the same beat. You’d let him pack your blunt for you, and he must have laced it with something.

“Give me your tongue.”

Your arms are draped around the back of the bench and your body is so comfortable it doesn’t want to move. The whole club feels like nothing but a dream. A girl giggles and you can feel someone pressing lightly on your chest. You manage to take another drag on your blunt as you roll your eyes back into alignment. You’ve never seen this purple haired girl before, and you’re not quite sure where you are. But she’s smiling, and you can’t help but smile back at the absurdity.

>Stick out your tongue for her. You stopped by the bar on the way to Gamma, it’s safe here.
>Fight out of the dream. You never left your apartment, you wouldn’t be here.
>Snap out of your daydream. You’re just in the shower after a long night.
>Other

These choices will retroactively determine your choice following your lose in Somme

Alright, so you guys vote in pairs apparently

I can roll a die

Stick out our tongue for her
>>
You roll your shoulder and get feeling back in it as you exhale a cloud of smoke between the two of you. You finally manage to get your arm moving again and slowly reach over to take the blunt from your mouth. “Is there a problem ma’am?” you ask as you stare into her golden eyes. She must be using a pair of colored contacts or something.

“No problem with me, but you have a problem of three,” she responds as she traces her black nail up your neck to your chin. “Fury wants you out of his shop and Eve says your heart is about to stop.”

“But that’s only two,” you say with a chuckle before rolling your tongue out of your mouth for her. She laughs as she brings up a small device to your tongue and presses it against you. Something sharp jabs into you and you jump and nearly throw her off of you as you grab at your mouth. You can feel every nerve in your tongue light on fire as the drug races through your blood, jolting you awake.

“Relax and take a break, it’s just a stim stake,” she says as she slides off your lap and sits next to you.

You slowly relax back into the booth as you wipe your chin and swallow the blood. You look around the club as the stimulants work their magic on you. You’re somewhere in Delta, a club that may as well be a strip club actually. You’ve been here before, it’s just barely above Gamma. There’s normally more people in here, but it seems to be just you and the employees aside from a few drunks at the bar. You check the time, 0916.

>Say something.

>>
“I’m sorry, but who are you? And what the hell are you on?” you ask as you return your blunt to your mouth. The stim stake is still burning through your blood counteracting whatever you took before. It’s probably doing wonders for your insomnia, and it’s certainly giving you flashbacks to taking them in the dead of night with shaky hands, no fire, and no backup, surrounded by screamers and lunatics.

“Chái jùn māo’s the name, and I don’t want any blame. If you’re asking about the rhyme, that’s just how we have to spend our time. It’s this place’s shtick, even though it feels like a bad movie flick,” she explains as she tucks her legs up on the seat next to her.

“Oh shit, I’m in Kyoki, aren’t I?” you ask as you rub your eyes.

“Right in one, and you can call me Chái jùn, or just Chai,” she says as he enthusiastically points up at the ceiling.

“You said Fury wanted me out of here then?”

“Yeah, but that was just because you were about to croak,” she explains cheerfully.

>Say something.

>>
>>28250601
And now I am not going to croak? You have a pretty strange way of doing things.
>>
>>28250601
What ever we took, we either need more or significantly less, and as where already halve-way there, its to late to change course.
Lets take another hit and stick our tongue in Chai!
>>
“So now that I’m not going to croak, I can stay? Forgive me if I find your methodology a bit strange,” you ask as you take the final drag on your blunt and snuff it in a nearby ashtray.

She shrugs. “That’s Fury’s choice, but if you started buying you’d certainly have a voice,” she says as she drapes her arm around your shoulders.

You perk an eyebrow and take a quick glance down her. She’s relatively modestly dressed, not the kind of girl that would go up on stage. Tight t-shirt, torn up jean shorts, and high black boots. “If I’m to start buying again, I think I could go for more of whatever I had.”

“Sorry, but no can do. Those were yours and you only had a few. I could get you another whiskey, but that could be a bit risky,” she says as she picks up an empty glass and tilts it in the air.

“I think that will do while I think, but you’re acting like you’re on the menu?”

“Not typically no, you are better than our usual clientele though,” she says as she stands up and walks over to the bar. You notice that attached to the small of her back is a prosthetic tail swishing back and forth through the air. You sit upright in the booth and notice something in your pocket, you emptied one of your hydrocodone bottles. Not your typical mix because you do like having a liver, but that doesn’t quite account for the daze you were in.

Either way, you have to remember what it was you were planning on doing.

yes, just in case we have to get from A to B very quick later, not necessary related to what we are doing atm.

“So, it feels like if I try to stand up, I will suddenly discover that my bones have turned to pudding. So with that, I do believe I’m going to sit here and pay for my stay,” you say as Chai walks back over to you and you put a welfare chip on the small table in front of you.

“Your plan sounds fine to me. Hope you don’t mind that I got myself some whiskey,” she says as she hands you your glass and taps her own against it before sitting next to you.

“So you didn’t give me a straight answer about whether you’re on the table?” you sip the whiskey, not the best brand out there.

“Sorry to disappoint, but that’s not in my job description,” she answers just before she jerks her head to the side to stare into space. “Nera? What do you want? I’m working? I’ll talk to you later,” she says before turning back to you. “Sorry about that, my friend.”

“Chai! I said no personal calls when you’re with clients,” the bartender barks from across the room. You twist around to look at him and see that he’s scowling at her.

Her finger wraps around your chin and pulls you back to look at her as she straddles your lap again though. “He’s no fun, but don’t let that get in our way. I’m here to give good company to clients like you who come from up top. The girls from down in Gamma can come over and give you a dance if you’d like.”

“Perhaps later,” you say as she places her hands on your shoulders and smiles. “You look like you have something on your mind though.”

“You’re military aren’t you?” She’s smiling, but it’s a different smile now. The other ones were practiced and fake, this one is different, and you can feel her digging her nails into you.

“Now what,” you say as you lean off the back of your seat, “makes you say that?”

“The welfare chip,” she responds. The way the light is hitting her face, her eyes are peering out of the shadows like a wolf’s.

“Lots of people are on welfare in EDEN. That’s just what happens when the government runs the economy, they have to take care of people when they lay them off, so they can pick them back up for work later.”

“Yeah, but those people can’t afford to come in here, and if they can, they aren’t good looking. They’re usually decrepit old men who can’t get their bloody rocks off on their own,” she responds as she licks her lips.

“So you’re basing this off the fact that I’m sexy? I suppose I should be flattered,” you say before sipping your whiskey again.

“That,” she says as she leans atop you, close enough to mingle your breaths, “and I can smell it on you. You’ve been outside these walls, haven’t you?” You can see her tail flicking back and forth behind her as she stares into your eyes. “What’s it like out there? Did you ever see any of the infected? Have you seen the Isles? Have you seen the ocean?” she asks in building intensity, by the end she’s almost shouting.

“Alright, yeah, I’ve been out there. Out in the big open world surrounded by the dead and dying, with almost no backup and no relief for months on end except what favors you can get from the Isles. But I’ve never seen the ocean, but I have seen Lake Michigan and I couldn’t fucking believe it,” you answer.

“Have you ever taken CZAR?”

“Chai! Do you need to take a breather?” the bartender, Fury, asks.

Her smile switches to a bored pout as she looks over at him and sticks her tongue out. “Well, have you?” she asks as she turns back to you.

“I’ve seen a CZAR farm, which should be far more interesting to you than whether I’ve doped up on that shit,” you answer as you watch her smile twist back to that hint of madness you glimpsed earlier.

“No way. A real one? A real real CZAR farm? What were you even doing there? Did you have to go there to kill them or something?” she asks as she grabs you tighter. She’s probably broken he skin in the back of your shoulders by now, but it doesn’t bother you too much, you’re still riding your high.

“I found it by accident actually. I was stationed close enough to one of the settlements in the Isles that I was in touch with them fairly regularly. Every once in a while I’d rip some machinery out of one of my Jotnar and give it to them in exchange for them being ready to save my fucking ass if things got in over my head. Should have been written up for war profiteering, but I got lucky,” you explain before finishing your drink.

“Anyways, one day they called me. The agreement of course goes both ways. I have to bring the hellfire down for them if they needed it, and they did. They gave me the coordinates of where one of their buddies went missing and said they’d meet me there. Turns out, it was a CZAR farm. The fuckhead running the thing had cocked it all up and gotten himself infected, killed the guys who had gone there to buy his CZAR off of him and then I got called in for damage control.”

“And the pigs right? Were there pigs?” she asks eagerly.

“Of course there were pigs. If they hadn’t been using pigs you think I’d be standing here today?”

“Well, technically you’re sitting right now,” she points out.

>>
“Good to know, I can’t actually feel my legs so I was just guessing. Regardless, I had to go in with my gas mask and full gear on and kill them all. The place was fucking disgusting. The pigs eat each other you know. You’re supposed to keep them all separate before you kill them, but this fuck had let them all stay in the same god damn pen, so when I walked in, I got a full view of them eating each other and rotting in their own shit, and the fuckhead who was running the fucking thing was in the middle of it all, and didn’t have any legs left,” you continue.

“And what happened next?”

“Sod off Fury, I’ll punch you in the bloody face. I don’t even need to be here,” she hisses as she pushes off you of you glare at the bartender and inadvertently gives you a full view of her chest.

“But you are here, so you’re representing my business and I don’t want to be associated with a loony cat!”

“You wanna go? I’ll take you on. Come at me,” she hisses before you stick your hand in the air.

“It’s really alright. I don’t mind talking about this in the least, and I can’t quite stand up yet, so I’d rather talk than drink. My apologies to the other clients though, I’ll try to keep it down,” you say.

You can’t quite turn your head around enough to see, but you can hear the bartender sigh and give up. “Alright, if you’re fine with it Warrick. You ever want her to leave, just tell me, alright?”

“I don’t think that will be a problem,” you say as he slowly walks away.

“You should have let me do it, I could’ve just jumped up and smacked him right in the throat and then tackled him down the old rugby way and he would’ve never seen it coming!”

“Alright, well, anyways. So I had just found this complete FUBAR CZAR farm, right?”

“Fubar?”

“It’s an old German word, don’t worry about it. So everything was infected right? Bunch of those pigs were bloating up and the others were bashing on the pen walls trying to get to me. Until I showed up, they had just been kind of milling around killing each other. But then they get a whiff of me. It was like watching Liberty Stadium explode after an upheaval in a War Games. Trampling included.”

“But you obviously got out, or didn’t you? Are you actually a ghost?”

“Nah, you just never seen someone shoot as fast as I did when they started coming after me. And I pray to Cerberus every night that the gun they gave me didn’t jam and had enough stopping power to bust through their skulls and kill them. If one of the guys from the Isles had gone in, with just a chinsy AK or something, he probably would have died. I just got fucking lucky, and after I called it in, got to enjoy the biggest damned fire I’ve ever seen. Had to wear my gasmask for like three days afterwards, but fuck if it wasn’t worth it.”

“For as fucked up as it was out there, it was better than living in here. Things happened, things mattered. The people I met out there, if I saw them dying in a gutter in Gamma, I probably wouldn’t stop to help them. But out there, I would lay down my life for them,” you say quietly. “So what’s your story? I’ve told you a good deal of mine, and what you wanted to hear, now I’m curious about you,” you say as she leans away from you. You can see her tail flicking back and forth playfully again.

“Not much to say about me really. I’ve never been on a real adventure. Grew up in Beta with my family since my mother is a researcher. Got bored with everything up there and figured it would be fun to come down here and work this place. It was something I hadn’t tried before, and it’s been fun. I get to meet people like you and Fury likes it since the rich guys who come down here like having someone willing to have a conversation with. The other girls just want the money and hate it when the military comes down and buys them for the evening.” She shrugs and pushes her violet hair behind her ear, glancing around the room.

“Just doing things because they’re new can get you in a load of trouble. I’d be a bit surprised if you haven’t been assaulted by a junkie by now. Though, if it were a CZAR head I’d probably see the scars on you,” you say as you reach in your pocket and pull out the makings for a joint.

“Can’t say I’ve had that happen to me yet, things are surprisingly tame here,” she says as you roll up the weed.

“If these are your normal hours, you probably don’t see much of anything. The real fun happens right when everyone gets out of the factories, when you get dozens of men running in with their pay checks held high, demanding the best,” you say as you seal up the joint and start looking for your lighter.

“Yeah sure,” she says before reaching down her shirt and pulling a small, metal lighter out. You finish rolling hers as she lights the one in your mouth. “So your name is Warrick?”

“That it is,” you answer as you hand her the joint.

“What brought you down here at this hour, Warrick?”

She lights her own and slides off your lap to sit next to you as you think. “A lot has been happening recently, and I’m kind of throwing myself into it head first. I stopped here on my way someplace. Memory is a bit of a haze though. Whatever I took really knocked me on my ass. Good news though, I can feel my legs again,” you say as you lift your feet into the air to demonstrate.

“And I thought I’d have to go get you a wheelchair and roll you around like some old high roller living the good life up in Alpha,” she says, rolling her head to look up at you.

“Nah, I’m not that kind of guy. Although I should probably get going, after I finish this of course,” you say.

“Good point, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop you. I’m not an MP or something, I’m just going about my own business while on leave. If shit goes downhill, there’s no stopping it,” you say after a particularly long drag.

“You know, they gave you the cheap stuff,” Chai comments as she looks at the joint you gave her.

“It’s the medically regulated stuff.”

“So yeah, the cheap shit.”

“I got it for free, so I don’t care that much.”

“Alright, well I’m going to go clear this with Fury,” she says before jumping to her feet and hurrying over to the bartender.

You sigh and rub your head, you can feel the edge of a migraine setting in again, but the chemicals are keeping it at bay. You flex your hand, opening and closing it a few times. Your reactions are dulled. If you get in a fight, it could go rather poorly, and you don’t have a firearm on you You’ll have to rely on your old training, and see if your body can still keep up with it.

Should be fun.

You stand up the new blood flow making all the nerves tingle and jump as you struggle to maintain your balance. “Ready to go Warrick?”

“Yeah, yeah, time to get out of here. Time’s wasting and there’s no use in sitting around,” you answer as you walk out of Kyoki. Chai follows at your heels.

what would the point be in keeping it a secret until then? There would be almost no impact. You'll find out somewhere between the 1/3 and 1/2 mark in the plot

>>28258133
alright then. At the halfway point in the story when EVE reveals to us she is Fenix I will remember this moment.

Also, EVE has no jurisdiciton of the web right? We should start actign more suspicious towards her. Askign her to do things that she wouldn't do normally

So is the vote honestly to go to a CZAR dealer?

and is it really only one player in here?

>>28258429
do you want me to pretend to be more people?
>>
>>28258475
No, because there should be more players. I get upvotes, I have followers, people talk about liking this quest a lot, I've been sought out and told directly that they really enjoy this quest. There are enough players for this quest. They're just not on right now apparently

Or I might be bleeding players because they feel that I enthuse 'pointless' side quests too much or something
>>
>>28258560
probably just nobody on right now. It looked like you had more people earlier. Also having to go to your job probably didnt help

Chai follows behind you as you walk out and find the nearest lift down to Gamma level. You could have taken a stair case, but you know that muggers like to hang around the blind corners in stair cases. The lift is safe enough a way to go down since you can’t get jumped when the door opens. At least when getting on. You take care to watch your footing and stay on edge as the lift comes to a stop halfway into Gamma and the rust gates slowly give way to let you leave.

There are no muggers or street gangs or CZAR heads as far as you can see when you get out in the maze of concrete halls. The people around you are broken and decrepit, with arched backs, thin frames, and scars everywhere. NO one would stay in Gamma if they could get out, and the military takes everyone who could make a difference, leaving behind the ill and malcontent.

With the population density the way it is in Gamma, most people don’t have proper bathrooms to themselves, and can’t usually afford the public baths, so they fester in their own stick till it stains their skin and clothes. You can feel every eye in the area move to look at you, every depressed shop owner, janitor, and vagrant in the area watches as you exit the lift with Chai gawking around behind you.

Three different sound systems are all competing to play their own music or broadcast the news, resulting in just a mess of static drowning out the sounds of the ghetto around you. The shops are crummy, only supported by the occasional person who comes down from Delta and the people in Gamma who want to pretend they can afford to leave. The proximity to the lift keeps the apparent crime down, but would of course attract a different breed. “Chai, make sure you keep an eye on your pockets, and don’t get into trouble,” you comment as you start walking down a hallway.

>>
You’ve never been in this part of Gamma, but you’re certain it will have what you’re looking for. The maze of Gamma was created randomly over the years of construction. Thin sheets of concrete and steel form most of the walls, and the floors are supported by lattice beams connected to the towers surrounding the area. When Gamma was originally built, there had been an actual layout with permanent walls, but the residents had torn them down and done what they would with them as they fought over property lines and territory, until the layout had become so convoluted it became a paradise for muggers and gangs. And the two of you of are dressed in clean clothes from Delta, enough to catch the eye of anyone looking to rip you off. But you keep your eyes out and manage to stay clear of danger.

Chai doesn’t say much as she follows behind you, swiveling her head around to look at everything and occasionally pointing out a shop with some novelty in it. Then someone else gets your attention, EVE. “Admin Warrick, what the heck do you think you’re doing with Serah Lockheart?”

You glance over at Chai. “You mean Chai? She felt like joining me and I didn’t see a point in refusing her.”

“But what are you even doing in Gamma?”

“Right now, I’m looking for a gun. A man needs some protection,” you explain as you turn down another random hall.

“If you would just stay out of Gamma you wouldn’t need one at all. You’re going to get killed down there. Did Serah talk you into this?”

“No?”

>>
“Look behind you and knock twice. The Peace Keepers know of a war profiteer who works in this area. He’ll have a gun for you. Now I want you to leave Gamma immediately. I can’t have you dying on me,” EVE shouts at you, but you turn around and see a loose panel. Two knocks and it slides away revealing a man in his forties with a blind eye and burn scars covering his entire body.

“You looking for something?” he asks. Behind him, you can see racks of weapons lined up of standard military issue.

“I need a sidearm,” you answer as you push up against the entrance.

“Traditional semi-auto or revolver?”

“Military.”

“Like I said, traditional semi-auto or revolver? Everything I have in here is military stuff. I don’t sell beater guns.”

“You should get a revolver, revolvers are cool,” Chai chimes in as she peers over your shoulder.

“Do you have a Lupa?”

“I have two Lupas, both with suppressors. Three grand,” he says as he reaches behind himself and grabs the revolver for you. You pick it up and look at it. No noticeable corrosion thanks to the plastic coating on the outside, the firing mechanism seems as sound as any Cerberus weapon, nothing wrong with the suppressor, serial number destroyed.

“Three grand is steep. And I’ll need a holster.”

“You’re paying for the quality. You can go get yourself killed with someone else’s product if you want, but mine costs three grand, and two per bullet.”

“Hollow points?”

“Five per.”

“How many do you have?”

“I’ll only sell you thirty.”

“And if I want more?”

“Tough shit. You going to pay?” You shrug and pull out a welfare chip. You ping into it and adjust the balance on it before handing it over to him. He stares at you as he scans the chip. When his screen lights up, he reaches down and grabs you a ragged box of loose ammo along with a holster. “Will that be all then?” Without letting you respond, he slams the panel shut again, right after you take your goods.

“Well he was a jerk. Doesn’t he know that you could just report him and get him arrested?” Chai complains as you load the Lupa and holster it to your hip.

1/2
>>
“Chill out, the MPs know about him already. Nothing I can do to him.” You take a few quick pulls from the holster and confirm you can still reflexively grab it. After a moment’s though, you adjust your shit to hang over it and mostly conceal it.

“Admin Warrick,” EVE starts again, “I really must insist that you leave Gamma at once. It is not safe. And I want a good explanation for why you are running around with Ms. Lockheart.”

“Uh, hold up a moment Chai, don’t wander off,” you say as she starts wandering deeper into Gamma.

“Oh, don’t tell me you’re scared now or something. I thought you were going to go on an adventure with me. Wait a minute, are you chatting with someone through your implant? How rude, you haven’t said anything at all to me. Is it your girlfriend? Your boyfriend? A long lost brother? Your mortal enemy? Your estranged father who hasn’t seen you since birth? The bastard son you never wanted? A talking plant? High priest Cthulhu? Loki the god of chaos?”

“No,” you answer as EVE aggressively sends ellipses at you. “It’s just EVE, she’s giving me a hard time.”

“EVE? How boring. But wait a minute, are you chatting with her without moving your lips or anything at all right now?”

“No, but I can. Seriously, hold up a minute,” you say to her before turning your attention back to EVE. “Who actually is this girl?”

“Serah Lockheart is the daughter of Dr. Martina Lockheart, a colleague of Dr. Chase. The question is what are you doing with her. The way you two are dressed is implying things that you have no business implying.”

You’re about to say something more when you hear a curious noise. Pipes are rattling around you, with something scratching them. Looking down the halls around you, you don’t see anyone else, and the rattling is getting louder. “Get away Warrick!” EVE shouts at you just before the ceiling next to you collapses and thick balls of fur drop down on the ground around you. Rats. Rats the size of dogs are all around you.

Chai screams.

“Chai, run. Now,” you order as you try to avoid the swarming rats. Their bods are fat and bloated with size, choking their joints, their fur is falling out in mange and disease, and their teeth are snapping and bloody. They must have been crawling around the pipes from Epsilon. Gamma residents would have had a blast pot shotting them in their free time. Some of the street vendors probably cook them up and sell them. Some probably don’t even hide that it’s rat meat. Some see it as better than synthetic meat.

You dodge and run down a nearby hall, only getting by because the rats seem legitimately surprised to have been dropped down when they were. “Chai! Get the fuck away from them!” you shout as you reach back and grab her hand. You pull her out of the area and drag her down the hall, you can see that her leg is bleeding, one of them must have bit her. You bust through a doorway, escaping most of the rats, but one of them has followed you.

Her durability : 29

“I’m not wasting a fucking bullet on this thing, move,” you shout as you try to drag her along, but then she trips. A piece of rusting steel was justting from the ground and it caught her ankle, ripping her from your hand. The rat leaps atop her as you stumble forward, trying to stop yourself in time to help. You immediately pull your Lupa from its holster and take aim, but it’s on top of her, biting at her arms in its frenzy.

You step over and swiftly kick it off of her, crushing most of its overburdened body with the heel of your shoe. When it bounces off the wall and slams on the ground you put a round through its skull and splatter its blood across the entire room. “Fucking rats. Are you alright Chai?” You ask as you holster your Lupa and bend down next to her. Claw and bite marks cover her arms and chest, most of her shirt is torn apart and you can see the rats frothing spit mixed into her wounds. You glance over and see the thing still twitching despite not having half a body.

“No I’m not alright you bastard. You should have fucking shot it sooner!” Chai shouts as she weakly punches you in the chest.

You try to respond to her as she punches you again and again, tears in her eyes from the pain. You seal your mouth up and help her to her feet. You peel off your over shirt and drape it around her. “Come on, I’ll get you to the hospital. You coming down here was a mistake,” you say as she slumps against you.

You glance around and see eyes peering out from doorways, watching you. You snarl and switch her to your other side, leaving your Lupa free in case one of them wants to jump you.

Not an admirable goal. It happens when you write characters so humanely and interestingly that people go OMG HEART BONES.
Its also a crutch, and more trouble than its worth.

You know, I could see giving EVE and EDI being a sidequest, because it would allow node scripts and such to be ran that alters her operating

IE, admin warrick built hardcoded subroutines into it to block out he programming that prevents her considering certain thought processes
- all so eve COULD use it as a remote bot to investigate things she normally can't, which is kind of needed if fenix is indeed, a schitzophrenic eve.
