"You look nervous." Holly says as you settle into the commander's seat. "Relax, I don't bite." She says glancing down at her notes from her perch on the gunner's seat. You take a deep breath and try to focus on the seat below you- this is your seat and when you are in it, it's your tank. You nod a bit, that fact giving you a bit of confidence.

You are Commander Russells of the M26E1 Pershing Heavy Tank "Black Jack" and, a very pretty older woman in, what you are now noticing is a rather low-cut blouse sits across the T54's breech, you lie to her face. "Not nervous at all!" You say, plastering a cocky grin on your face- You are the master and commander of this tank- she's in your territory!

Holly smiles back warmly before pressing a button on her phone. "Alright, since you're the Commander, I was hoping you could tell us a bit about what you do as part of the tank crew."

Easy one. "First of all, I'm the leader of the crew- I direct individual crew and make sure everyone is working in concert." You say confidently. "In combat, besides directing the crew, I act as a spotter- I find targets, identify them and order the correct ammunition type. I then lay the gun onto the correct vector, give my gunner target information such as range, heading and windage." As you continue talking you feel more and more confident. "Finally, if my gunner misses I give firing corrections."

"I see- so you're the eyes and brain of the tank?" You nods. "What sort of historical information can you give me on your tank?"

i find this could be a bit of emprovement to the orginal work. it's a shame. the japanse can make at times wonderful at it's core plot and setting of shows, but mess up when it comes to character inter actions and choices/actions. it's kinda like how Lucas made the original star wars idea, but when he attempted to flesh it out, it got worse and others could pick it up and make not trash from it.

Any sufficiently interest reader could find the general history of the Pershing tank program. What you need is a personal touch. "Black Jack?" You ask, and Holly nods. "Black Jack started off as M26 hull no.323. It left the Detroit Arsenal on April 3rd, 1945 but, instead of being sent to Germany, it was requisitioned by the Ordnance Department." You say- Black Jack's history was something as personal to you as the history of your family.

"So it never served in World War II?" Holly asks, looking up from her notes.

You shake your head. "It was delivered to the Ordnance Department where it was modified to carry the more powerful 90mm T54 cannon- One of only two tanks to recieve this upgrade. It was redesignated the M26 Enhancement 1." You say, with a note of pride in your voice as Holly looks a bit confused. "With American tanks, there are up to three designations: 'M' is the model type- M4, M18, M26, etc. 'A' is for Advanced- this generally means something was fundamentally changed like the hull or suspension over previous models. 'E' stands for Enhancement- that means that weapon has had something more minor or less fundamental changed, such a better gun, extra armor or a better engine." You explain. "Anyway, both E1 tanks were tested and subsequently re-converted in M26A1."

"I know its unlikely, but did Black Jack ever see combat?" Holly says- she's actually right on this point. Most tanks made in the later stages of the war were decommissioned before they even left the country, sitting in depots waiting to be sold for scrap.

You nod. "It did. It was actually sent to an Army ordnance depot in Japan..." You start.

"Interesting- this isn't the first time your tank has been to Japan?" Holly says, looking up from her notes with surprise. Actually, it's the first time you've really thought of it yourself- Your grandfather never talked much about being in Japan.

"It spent about three years here, rusting away in a shed with a tarp over it..." You say with a smile. "When the North Koreans first invaded the South, all we had were Chaffee Light Tanks, which were ineffective against the North's T-34s- So they found these three tanks and put together a crew- the loader of that crew was Private James Russells: my grandfather." You beam with pride- that day in 1950 was when Black Jack came to your family. "They fought in it for nearly a year before M26's were replaced in combat by newer M47s."

"And they were involved in combat?" She asks, looking up at you.

You're a bit more at ease now, giving a smile as you remember all the stories your grandfather told you about Black Jack- too many to tell, seemingly too many to even remember them all. "Black Jack most definately saw combat..." You start, trying to think of any one story that sticks out. "Honestly, though, my grandfather would be a much better source of all those stories than me..." You say, before looking over at her. "Why do you ask if Black Jack's been in combat."

Holly finishes writing something down. "Actually, its a bit of superstition I heard while I was here, regarding Senshado..." she looks up at the bulkhead and then down to the gun. "Are you familiar with the Shinto religion?" She asks, seemingly changing the topic. You shake your head.

"Well, one of the beliefs is that every object has a spirit. They call it a kami." You nod, following along. "The long and short of it is that many in senshado, especially the older practitioners, believe that a tank that has seen actual combat has a particular kind of 'warrior spirit'," She shrugs. "Mostly just folklore, but they believe that a veteran tank has a stronger will, that it will fight harder and be more resiliant. Have you heard of that?"

You think about how long Black Jack has been in the family, about how it seems like there's more than a tank sometimes. You idly reach down and run a hand over the turret override controls and smile. "Yeah- sometimes it feels like he's taking care of me as much as I try to take care of him..." You say.

"...Why do you keep calling it a he instead of a her?" Holly askes, looking at you strangely.

You shrug idly. "Not sure- he just doesn't seem like a female tank to me..." You say, not quite sure of the answer yourself- Black Jack's been a "he" for as long as you can remember- even your grandfather never refers to it as female. "No offense, but it just doesn't seem right calling him a her."

She nods, writing something else down in her notes. "So, Black Jack saw combat in Korea- how did, uh, he come into your grandfather's possession after the war?"

Honestly, they're not impossible to get in the US and UK, provided their main guns are non-functional and they have road-friendly treads. Expensive, maybe, but aside from a few funny looks at the DMV, the government really couldn't care less if there are disarmed milsurp vehicles in civilian posession. Hell, they used to sell surplus M3 halfracks to logging companies as skidders.
>>
>>28447417
It was also possible at least at one point, to make the main gun functional again on surplus tanks, the only thing they used to do was add a rubber plug to the end of the barrel.

So you could buy a mothballed tank, then re-core the gun barrel, not that this helped you find ammunition for it or anything.
>>
>>28447417

I was thinking back to some news I heard on a big crackdown on modded cars around Melbourne, I think it was. Not outlawing car clubs in name, but targeting them so specifically it was a ban in everything but name.

I also read about the bike clubs. Are they really that bad in Australia? Most of them started here in the US, but the big ones (Angels, Outlaws, and Pagans) and most of the smaller ones keep to themselves apart from being loud and crude in bars.

How would you guys feel about another GuP Quest, specifically for when the other two aren't going. It's a bit boring waiting for the next installment
>>
>>28447666
Yep they're that bad. I live on the Gold Coast, where the big crackdown is happening. Next door neighbour used to be a police officer who had to change his identity after putting one of the Bikie bosses in jail a decade ago or something.

I live in a good suburb though; the problems where I live haven't had much to do with Bikies and more to do with convenience store hold-ups and armed robberies.

>>28447716

>I was thinking back to some news I heard on a big crackdown on modded cars around Melbourne, I think it was. Not outlawing car clubs in name, but targeting them so specifically it was a ban in everything but name.

Nah, that was a paper tiger. There were a couple of minor restrictions introduced recently, (mostly regarding kids on their learners/provisional licences begin restricted to less powerful cars and stuff), but really the meat of that (In Melbourne at least) was just a bunch of grossly illegal and unsafe modifications that got cracked down on by police, and the owners (who, surprise surprise, were associated with the Bikies) tried to start a big legal stink. Didn't work, but got a lot of publicity.

Any Clubs you might have heard about being "banned" were probably just someone misreporting the Bikies and their Shell clubs getting gutted.
>>
>>28447758
seconded. suggestion: omakes exploring Russell and OCs having relationships with other characters?
>>
>>28447757
Wow. That sounds like a totally different breed than we have up here. Don't get me wrong, they're not pillars of the community by any stretch of the imagination, but they get by on making meth and leaving everybody outside the outlaw clubs and tweakers alone. The "lovable rogue" image they try to typify gets shot down pretty quick when they fuck with civilians. I remember EVERYBODY, both police and other 1%'ers, coming down hard on the Mongols MC when they started bringing in street-level Mexican gangbangers that were busting up 7/11's and shaking down bars for protection.
>>
>>28447914
The Mongols just bought out one of our local clubs, the Finks.

Who were already horrid rotten drug dealers as it was. Yeah.

But yeah, our Bikies are basically the scum of the earth, holed up in massive Concrete fortresses. The Victorians had to get the Army in to bust open open so they could exercise a search warrant, recently.
>>
>>28447914
The armed rovvery stuff is due to the economy, and not the Bikies.

Although I'm sure there are some bikies that like to get into that.

But yeah, they do a lot of drug trafficking, which is bad; they fuck with the police, which is bad; kill rivals, which is bad; etc.

Organised crime is worse down in Melbourne and Adelaide. You hear more about gang wars down there than here in Queensland.

It's a smokescreen. A bait-and-switch.

The courts have a real habit of dicking over *any* legislation that is reasonably needed to make actual headway against Bikie gangs. (Bikies have some great lobbyists and lawyers.)

So the legislation introduced at the start is intentionally harsh, so that the "revised" version (which the police wanted in the first place), gets in fine without the Opposition kicking it back or the courts screaming about "MUH UNCONSTITUTIONAL LEGISTLATION", etc.

That aside, even if this wasn't the case, many of the Bikie gangs are bad enough to warrant extreme measures. Frankly, they should just all be shot.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Just look at the US.

You have the Left trying to ban firearms, "for the safety of our children."

You have increasingly militarized police forces.

You have federal agencies targeting political opposition.

You have federal agencies running false-flag operations to try and curtail rights guaranteed by the US Constitution.

You have multiple major media outlets denouncing all opposition to the current president and glossing over or ignoring scandals or problems involving him.

You have most universities that are not in the South pretty much brain-washing students and stifling any speech that counters the Left's agenda.

We're one congressional election, and 3 near-retirement Supreme Court Justices away from having a single party dominate all three branches of the government.

If that happens, you can bet your ass you'll be seeing laws that allow the arrest of "dangerous persons" due to mere association with certain groups.

Own a firearm? Mass murderer waiting to happen/Extremist Militia

Part of the Tea Party? Domestic Terrorist.

Vote Republican? Domestic Terrorist/Member of a Hate Organization.

Australia and the UK are already part way there, with a virtual ban on firearms...but there's enough "Fuck you, you wanker" going on in their respective parliaments that one party is never going to get control.

In the US.....you have too much of an abundance of stupid people who claim tolerance and intelligence but vote the party line without ever even considering the other possibilities.....and another group of idiots too afraid to vote for an effective 3rd Party because of the Democrats gaining control if they do.

You need to remember that Australia's right wing is more left wing than America's left wing. So there's really no comparing the politics that way.

We're entirely different cultures and politics. I can't take Australian gun laws and say they suit America, so conversely you can't take American examples and apply them to Australia.
>>
>>28448291
>there's enough "Fuck you, you wanker" going on in their respective parliaments that one party is never going to get control
That's pretty present in the US as well. The Democrats define themselves as "not Republican" and the Republicans define themselves as "not Democrat." They both shit on the same people, and they're effectivley the same party under two different names.
>>
>>28448120
Well, it's simple really. The T-54 (Obj 137) prototype was built in July 1945, and since the cutoff is V-J instead of V-E day, they qualify for entry into Tankwondo.
With 200mm frontal turret, 120mm @ 30 deg frontal hull, they're frontally impenetrable by either the 7.5 L/70 or OQF 17 lber.
Their guns ain't all that great since BR-412 is APHE, which leads to them not being able to kill each other, but fully capable of knocking out anything else.
And they made... what, 100,000 of the things? Much cheaper to find a working hull for a -54 than a M36B1 conversion for a M4 Sherman.

Yes, but British and Aussie politics have more parties than what is inherently a two-party system.

>>28448392
Actually, as Representative Democracies...you can, as the "will of the people" is shown through elected officials who then vote based on what they believe their constituents want...or more often what their party believes in.

And while gun-laws themselves can't be done tit-for-tat, the fact that it doesn't take much to reduce a population's ability to resist something like the proposed law earlier in this thread if one party takes control.

The fact that Aussie conservatives are more Left-Middle in terms of American politics has nothing to do with it.

Hell, look at Venezuela. It took one man getting his cronies into office before he was able to make himself "President for Life" and set up his chosen successor for complete control as well.
>>
>>28448579
>And while gun-laws themselves can't be done tit-for-tat, the fact that it doesn't take much to reduce a population's ability to resist something like the proposed law earlier in this thread if one party takes control.

And here's where the cultural gap makes American thinking irrelevant to other Nations - Most of what you said there is normally only heard coming from raving lunatics in Australia.
>>
>>28448579
I don't believe our culture would allow for that was what I was saying. Also that it's hard to compare those two different cultures.
>>
>>28448490
That wouldn't work, since the very first T-54 prototype was completed January 30th 1945. All that would do is drop the turret frontal armour to 180mm
>>
>>28448606
Also what this guy said.

Most people arguing that the government is trying to take control by enforcing stricter gun control tend to be viewed as raving nutcases who live out bush on their own.

In order for the government to go full totalitarian, they'd need control of the people, or at the very least, the armed forces. And the armed forces tend not to agree with the government anyway, and IMO would probably more likely side with the people than with whatever party is trying to take full control.

We're pretty anti-establishment in Australia, to be honest. probably comes from the whole prison colony thing.

You nods. "Well, after World War II and Korea there was a huge market for military surplus- planes, tanks, ships. A lot of times they were just sold off and scrapped." You say, leaning back. "That's probably what almost happened to Black Jack here, except for two things..." You say, looking at Holly for her part of the conversation.

"And those were...?" She asks, probably knowing at least one of them beforehand.

You smile- good reporter. Good. "First was the explosion of tank sports in the 50's and 60's..." You say, remembering all the documentaries and old films you'd seen about those days. "Off-road tank races, tank tug-of-wars, car-smashing- this is when Senshado was really coming into its own, as well- and, of course, tank dueling." You say with a smile. "They were huge- and it helped that you could buy a practically-new Sherman for about the same price as a new Ford. And there were a hell of a lot of tankers still around who never got over how fun driving a tank is." You smile inwardly, knowing that feeling exactly.

"So what was the second thing, then?" Holly asks- you're actually curious to know what she's writing down, but an attempt to get a glance at the notebook is rewarded with her subtly shifting it under her hand.

"Well, after Korea, my grandfather went to work in a scrap yard in Oakland, turning big things into little things..." You say, using exactly the words your grandfather had used in the hundred times he'd told you the story as a kid. "And one day, they get a shipment of military surplus out of Korea- one of which was a very familiar M26..."

"How did he know that tank was Black Jack, though?" She says, interrupting you just long enough to write down another note.

That's still better than 200mm of turret front.

In strategy you'd just need to treat it like you're facing a heavy. A really mobile heavy.

Anyway, if a team ended up fielding nearly entirely T-54s, I'd imagine the judges or at least the other teams would want to have a say about that.

You grin at Holly. "What? You think a tanker doesn't have an emotional, supernatural bond with his tank that trascends time and shipping?" You say, going completely straight-faced. "Up!" You say, opening the commander's hatch and motioning for her to open the gunner's hatch.

"We're not done-" She says, seemingly worried that you're ending the interview early.

You point forward to an old gauge on the gun mantlet. "See that mark, right there just above the coaxial?" You point and she nods and takes note. "On September 12th, 1950 a T-34-85 took a potshot at Black Jack and skipped the round off the mantlet- wasn't even close to penetrating but it left that mark." You shrug. "They could've repaired it, but it was so superficial and it didn't compromise the armor any so they just left it for the rest of the war. Turns out that mark is what saved Black Jack from the scrap heap- once he saw that he checked the hull number and- lo and behold- no.323. He walked right into his bosses office and asked him how much it was worth in scrap- my grandfather sold his car that afternoon to buy Black Jack."

You beam- it's a story your grandfather used to tell you at while you were in bed- you rest a hand on the top of the turret and idly pat the behemoth.

"So your grandfather fixed it up and used it for tank duels?" She says, looking down at a previous page of notes. "You said it had been converted back into a regular M26 after WWII- why does it have the T54 now?" She says looking out at the gun.

>"They found it on display at a museum..."

For what it's worth- I just refered to the various names as region or stylistic differences. Tankery is the American 1v1 style, Senshado is the Japanese team-based style. Perhaps Panzerfahren, being of European origin, could be the European Brigade-strength style of tanking?

"The gun?" You ask, looking down at the tip of the massive 90mm. "Actually- it didn't have the T54 until me and my crew restored it a second time." You say as you both take your seats back down in the turret. "Roy had been doing a lot of research into the history of the tank- of course my grandfather could tell us about most of it, but he didn't know anything before about it before it was discovered in that depot."

"Roy is your loader?" She says, checking her notes. "Rose said he's a big history and archival buff..."

You nods in the affirmative- Roy was never happier than when he was reading through copies of obscure testing reports or logistical hotsheets from World War II. "Yes- he's certain the one among us that's most comfortable with the more academic parts of tanking- he's the one that original discovered that Black Jack had been one of the E1's..." You lean back and smile, remembering how excited he'd been- you'd been mostly confused and a little annoyed until he'd shown you the results of the penetration tests. From there we were able to find out that the gun had been kept in storage for a few decades before being donated to an armor museum in Virginia."

"It must've been worth a lot?" Holly says, going back through her notes a bit before writing something else down. You attempt another peek but she intercepts it wordlessly.

Giving up, you just nod. "Priceless- but when the owner of the museum found out that were were restoring the tank that gun had originally belonged to, he actually donated to us." The owner, Dan McMann had been one of the nicest, most helpful people you'd met while restoring Black Jack- and you'd gotten a lot of help from a lot of people. "Not only that, but he had several of the shells as well, so we were able to get the measurements to have ammunition made for it. If we win this, then Oorai owes as much to Mr. McMann as they do to me and my crew..."

Holly nods. "Speaking of Oorai, do you mind if I change the topic a little bit?"

NEXT TIME ON GIRLS UND PANZER QUEST!

>We answer questions about our team.
>Please don't ask about Miho.
>PLEASE DON'T ASK ABOUT MIHO.

Girls und Panzer Quest will return tomorrow between 5-6PM PST. Additionally, you guys might've noticed that I've been only doing 1-2 GuPQs a week- that's probably going to continue through the holidays. Barring unforseen circumstances, though, there should be at least one GuPQ a week for the forseeable future.

Follow me on Twitter at https://twitter.com/BlackJackGuPQ for schedule updates and to find out when the thread goes live!

So do you actually wait for someone to post NEXT TIME before posting these?

She's going to ask about Miho, isn't she?

Well, more like it's usually faster for someone to post "Next Time" than it is for me to write out the entire thing. Didn't help that captcha fucked me.

A likely story

Like you don't wait for someone to post that you're dead before posting yourself.

I'm onto your shit, blackjack

Anyway, good thread tonight, guys. Best part of these threads is being able to talk tanks. I fuckin' love tanks.

I like the concept of European tanking as a kind of soccer analogue. . .

But brigade strength is probably too much. I'd say something like twelve to sixteen tanks max.

Also, they could have a Referee on the battlefield. And the Referee gets a modern MBT to make sure everybody listens.
