You sit at the table for some time, musing to yourself as you flip the business card in your hands. The pair of orcs long since gone and the meal finished. Veles watches with interest.

<Well? What happened?>

<They wanted the whole of my land, and were not amenable to considering selling only portions.> You respond.

<Curious, and that piece of parchment the small one gave you?> Veles queries.

<Business card, a way to offer services and contact information, but he apparently has the words 'Midnight, roof' written on it. Apparently they want a second meeting.>

<Well, I suppose we should find out how to get on the roof.>

You pay for your meal and head up towards the top floor, Veles collecting Dahz from whatever she was doing outside in the process. Your room coincidentally on the same floor. Veles has a bit of a time going up the staircase, blocking it for the few other guests before you get to the hallway on the top floor. On one side you see the door to your room, on the other, you see a hatchway leading up to the roof. A cursory tug on the pull rope extends a smaller ladder that, with some trepidation, you manage to climb up and peak out unto the flat roof. With nobody present you go back down. Veles looks at the hatchway and lifts himself on his tail, forgoing the ladder entirely as he looks out the hole before coming back down.

<Not a lot of room up here, if I come with it would hardly be discrete.> He says.

A quick look at the wall clock tells you that it is six hours before midnight.

Man, I sleep in too late for this shit.

Anyway, get a quick nap and meet them on the roof. Don't care whether or not we bring velles. I hope it doesn't go bad.

<Discretion is not something I am worried about.> You decide, <If anything I'll just have you wait here in the hallway and give a shout if anything goes wrong if you don't mind.>

He looks back his 35 feet of coils still sitting in the hallway. <I have no problem with it, though it might raise questions.>

<It will be late enough that most people will be sleeping, so it shouldn't be a problem. In the meantime, lets turn in for now.>

You head to your room, noticing just a pair of fairly high quality beds and a number of extraneous pillows you never figured out the use for. Veles tentatively slithers into one of the beds, it creaking in protest as he makes himself comfortable. You on the other hand set the small clock on the nightstand to midnight and place it under your pillow, hopefully masking it to not wake anyone but you up and lay back. It isn't long before sleep overtakes you...

Again a mass of swirling images, shadows dancing throughout the stills, but this time something appears amidst the storm of images, the shadowy form of a snakefolk, who you cannot tell, above them a mass orbiting. Then a second appears, the two embrace, before smaller ones appear, the second fades to nothingness in the arms of the first. It claws the air momentarily before turning to the smaller ones. It tends to them a while, the smaller ones growing with time and then leaving, not as the second had but merely slithering out of view, leaving the first alone...

You wake to the muffled ringing of the clock beneath your pillow. You quickly silence it before looking over to the sleeping form of Veles. You make yourself proper before gently shaking him awake. He wakes slowly and with a wide yawn, but nods to you as you head out the door, careful not to disturb the sleeping Dahz near the bath. You head to the hatchway, him following you shortly afterwards, as you slide it up and to the side, poking your head out once again.

This time there is a someone standing at the far end of the roof, a single figure with a cigarette cupped in one hand.

Once we finally lug ourselves out of the ladderhatch and get on the roof, let's clear our throat to get his attention. Assuming he hasn't already seen us.

You slide onto the roof into the temperate night air with only a slight rustling giving away your presence. The figure doesn't seem to notice as you move up on it so you let out a polite cough announcing your presence. Unfazed and not even looking in your direction, the figure gives you a wave over, the whirring in the arm identifying him as Serrak, the quieter of the two orcs.

You move up next to him as he takes a deep drag from a cigarette flicking the ash into a small container next to where he is seated. "Good to see you decided to come." He rumbles, gazing towards the coast.

"What's this about that you couldn't ask me with your friend there?" You query.

"'Friend'? Hardly. I merely wanted to give you a warning."

You tense, "So not even a veiled threat now?"

He chuckles, "You caught that did you? Karath is about as subtle as a bull and half as smart when it comes to business, but he can be a devious one. That business with 'his employers'? Yeah, the fool is the head of the company now, but still trying to find a way to pass consequences off to people who aren't him."

"If he's so bad, how did he become head of the company?"

"Nepotism. His mother used to own it. We were an artifice company originally, specializing in prosthetics." He raps a knuckle on the shell of his right arm, "Got mine through the company plan, and had a pretty good thing for myself until his mother died. He sacked the entire board and replaced them with his cronies. Made me his assistant."

"I take it this isn't a good thing?"

"I had a significant amount of standing with the board before he removed it, now it is filled with yes men and bootlicks that won't dare say he go wrong. Nearly all the influence I spent years building has been washed away. Now he's branching into land development, or so he says."

"What does all this have to do with this warning?"

"You're the first person that turned down his offer to his face. I've been screening folks for him. He doesn't take not getting his way well. I wouldn't be surprised if he tried something." He says, taking another long drag on the cigarette.

"Why are you telling me this?"

"Two reasons, first, I want my influence back, in order to do that he needs to be out of the equation. How I don't care, but making people aware of his ineptitude, even if only through roundabout ways, is a step in the right direction. Two, your associate interests me. Materials acquisition was my original role, and he had some things I had NEVER seen before. This leads me to believe you have either something special near you, or a means of accessing it. This makes you a good person to know, especially given how much promise the area shows."

"What's the catch, I'm assuming you will want something in return for this heads up."

"Lets call it an earnest tip of good will this time. As for an exchange of favors, I have an idea in the works but will take time to implement."

>Anything else you wish to ask him?

"Some clothing fabric and some of the furs, I can't identify the animals. Which takes some doing. Not to mention the blade of his is of note as well." He says, looking upward as he counts off a list of points he wanted to go through.

You are about to leave when another thought comes to you. "Oh, and can you try to keep your, er, boss from doing anything TOO rash? I'd hate for anyone to get hurt, on either side, over some land."

"Does your company still do artifice?"

Here he sighs, "Not nearly as much as we used too. A lot of the people he fired were top of their field in artifice research and development. We can maintain what we've produced but that's about it."

"A shame. Well, thanks again for the warning, I'll be sure to keep my eyes out." You call as you head back towards the hatchway.

"Take care of yourself, you'll need to." He responds, taking one last long draw of the cigarette before blowing it into the air. "Though, he never learned how not to escalate, so you might want to watch out of that. I'll be in touch."

You nod as he turns back to look at the coast. You head down the ladder to see Veles sitting a bit further back. <Had to tell a lizardman porter I was just stretching my scales, he gave me a look for a while. How did it go?>

<We'll talk back in the room.> you say, slithering towards your bed. You open the door and move inside, turning up the wick on the oil lamp brightening the place a bit more than the dim glow you had earlier.

Veles follows you in, settling himself partially on the bed, his tail slipping around and petting Dahz, who wakes with a start but goes back to laying on the ground. <Well?>

<A friendly warning. The head honcho of that outfit is apparently the worst sort of type to say no to. The smaller one isn't happy. Apparently the bigger one got control of a big company, and may do something untoward to try and claim my land.>

<Well, that cannot be good.>

<On the bright side, the one with the prosthetic arm is fairly nice.>

Veles muses on this. <Well, only thing we can do in this case is get back and prepare, if they do come.>

<You really don't have to. I mean you've been kind enough to see me through all this, I can't keep you from your home too long.>

He grins at you, <This is exciting though, and besides, I've got another four days before I would need to get back at least.>

You go over the details of what Serrak told you, and mention his interest in some materials Veles had, the blade and fabric. He tells you a lot of it is stuff of his own design, bu the shirt, if that is what he is eyeing, is a Casimiran speciality. From what he tells you, some of the gentry cultivate silkworms and some plants, when mixed into a coating they place on silk, wicks water away from the body, allowing for better heat retention while remaining comfortable. He produces his undershirt, handing you the fabric. It is exceptionally smooth and soft while remaining pliant in your hands. You've seen silk that the Pheonix Empire refugees have been able to produce, and while it is definitely more luxurious this, if Veles dissertation is true, is a lot more practical.

As for the blade, Veles produces the curved thing and shows you it. From what he says, it is far more malleable in thaumaturgical sense, it is here he proceeds to go off into a tangent, that while interesting, you don't quite understand what he means. He says that he will give a more hands on explanation back at camp should you wish. With that, you figure to get the remaining nights sleep.

The flash of images come back again, most indescribable but the shadowy snake appears alone again, searching for something, before another figure shows up, a third in tow. The first lingers with them a while, before the third starts to fade, not quickly like the one from the earlier dream, but gradually, much to the distress of the second, the first does what it can to help both before the third fades completely, and drifts away. The first consoles the second as it too begins to slowly fade, panicking as it does, the first does what it can, and you feel a sense of desperation in its actions, before the second finally drifts off as well. The first, alone once again, hangs its head in despair...

You wake to the smell of the ocean breeze wafting in from the window. Veles sitting near the window looks up as you stir. "Good morning."

"Mor-"

You do a double take, looking at Veles, the length is the same, its definitely him. "I thought you said you couldn't speak our language."

"I couldn't, but last night was wake up call. I spent all night looking at book before I made breakthrough. Casimiran is similar, that I know how to speak. I go from that to your language, no problem. Is not pretty, sound like idiot when I do, but at same time, is workable for now."

You see what he means, the accent appears rolling, while the consonants are harsh, but nonetheless, it appears serviceable, even if some words are lost. "Well, it certainly is a surprise I did not expect you to pick up a language that fast."

"I am fast learner. Though I do not like how I sound." he grimaces.

You head down to the foyer, talk right now is how the 'land buyer' up and left early this morning. Over breakfast of Applewood smoked bacon (Apple trees being a luxury from First Wood.), hard boiled eggs, and garlic hash browns you plan out what you are going to do for the day. The early auction long over, you hope to get to the Riverport before the second which should be late today. You also take the time to grab a newspaper before you head out.

You manage to catch another coastal skimmer, a female mer this time. While wary to take you on, she ultimately relents and welcomes you, Veles, and Dahz aboard. It appears you've gotten a bit of infamy among the skippers now but thankfully this ride is smooth and uneventful. During the time you make some smalltalk with Veles, helping him work around the accent, though it is slow going.

You also take a look at the paper. Apparently the Phoenix Empire is chest thumping again, though experts insist that it is just blustering rhetoric, the UFK has seen fit to reactivate the regiments, not wanting to leave the burden solely on the Nitor should it escalate. There is more unrest in first wood as well, a small resurgence of outlaws, apparently led by a former elven partisan using the moniker 'Two Hands.' The spree has been small, but violent, the paper doesn't say the how or why however. Another crime note is a series of elaborate and theatrical art thefts perpetrated by a women in a green evening dress. So far art Exhibitions featuring a new up and coming metalworking artist have been hit.
Another story, a feature piece of the last paladin, also catches your eye, but not much of it is what you haven't learned from the history books. Only things of note were interviews of her daughter and her adopted niece, a particularly fairly famous actor that has been in more than a few of the films you did see as a child in the South Fork church when the travelling cinema made its circuit.

Finally, one more relevant, is the story of a Nitor ship known as the LSID, or Light Shining in the Dark. Originally a mirror ship, it served as a communication vessel during the UFK-Phoenix conflicts ferrying messages of a secretive nature using the mirrors rather than flags. It was terribly complicated, but these ships prevented Phoenix operatives from cracking the coded messages. Eventually they simply resorted to sinking the mirror ships cutting communications. The Nitor, and the Caligo Clarus, responded to this by taking the LSID and outfitting it with 20 cannons while removing the complicated machinery used for precise mirror communications. The large mirror however still in place, it sent garbage informations luring the raiding boats to it, where it opened up all 20 barrels. Before the cease fire, the ship had racked up 20 confirmed ship destructions, it has since been extensively retrofitted and serves as a southern continent patrol boat.

It isn't long before you thankfully enter the Riverport Bay without incident. A little behind schedule due to the wide berth the skipper gave to the sight of your conflict with the smugglers, but in one piece. As you and your two companions disembark you wonder what you should do next.

You head back to the travellers inn you stayed at before you went on your adventure to Snake's Landing. Checking in with the bartender, McCain came back last night and, having not seen you, simply went to bed. The bartender recalls McCain leaving early this morning. You decide it would be best just to wait for him. You wait at the bar going through the paper with Veles, explaining the significance of the articles and stuff about their history. About an hour later you hear the door swing open, turning you see McCain with two others behind him.

"Howdy Miss." McCain drawls, "Everything go alright?"

"Not quite, buyer turned out to be a wash, on the bright side Veles can very nearly speak our language. Also ran afoul of some smugglers, it all turned out alright though."

Veles mutters a muted greeting through his drink, nodding at McCain.

"Well I'd a wished I'd a came with you miss. Wouldn't know what to do with myself if I let anything happen to you. You're dad would come back to get me if it did. Anyway, I did some recruiting. Prospects awful slim, but I got these two." he says, pointing a thumb over his shoulder.

You take stock of the two behind him. The first, a somewhat familiar younger man of Pheonix Empire heritage. Almost a head taller than McCain, he sports a well trimmed goatee and stands tall and straight backed. He gives you a nod. "Sun Tai, formerly of the Sun Ranch, pleasure to make your acquaintance."

"Sasha Masterson. Pleasure to meet you as well Sun Tai." You say, extending your hand.

He grips it in a firm handshake, "Most people call me Ty, Miss Sasha."

"Noted."

The other, you recognize from the leading up to the bar fight. Its the red headed harpy. She just gives you a nod until McCain gives her a look. She rolls her eyes. "Marie, nice to meet you..."

"Likewise" You say with a smirk.

"Everyone else I rounded up was either dubious, criminal, or criminally drunk" McCain says. "Also, picked up the dairy cows and about three hundred head of cattle, good stuff too. Ty was kind of a package deal with the Dairy cows." "Went through everything with the later auction. Its maybe mediocre at best. Talking with the ranchers, its been a really bad year. Not sure why."

Hot damn, we lucked out. Well, not quite, since a harpy this early on isn't the best- good to have hands and all, but at least she will be very, very good at herding the cattle.

We should buy a meal for everyone and start getting to know them, then go out and inspect the cattle to start getting to know them, and then check our purse to start getting to know our budget, now that we've got a herd. From there we can decide where to move forward.
>>

yeah, our main priority will be on that. Though we might have to leave behind our elf to manage the other two hands most of the time, though, and we will have to take days off from exploration for the busier cattle days, I'd wager.

We certainly have to go with Veles when he needs to be back at his place though, I want to see how he gets through the mountains.

No clue, but its a fair bet.

Speaking of Magic. We should definitely have Veles teach us some magic, not so much for us to go full mage but some magic is always helpful in a bind. and we should have him teach us to use our claws and barbs and other poisons. we're like 21 so we should have everything fully developed since Ssen got them at like 19.

I'm good at that.

Look, we all know veles is a piece of dripping older mancandy, but we're a businesslady. For now.

I look forward to finding other shit on our land. We've got a good base camp area to work from given the hot spring.
>>
>>28483389
Actually it was more a response to the guy talking about the flirting a while back. He's not doing it intentionally.. I'm pulling a little from Draconomicon here though, and giving it my own twist. Regardless its purely academic at this point. He's definitely a catch, but at the same time you barely know him and he's nothing if not polite.
>>
>>28483871
Enough about his impressive length, we've got bigger fish to fry. Like taking mineral samplings of our hot springs water to determine what kind of rocks we got.
>>
>>28484107
Of course, I fully expect this to go full yayifications.
>>
Well, I'm gonna hit the hay. I hope those farm hands are good, we've got a LOT of cattle to deal with. At least I'm sure 50% of them have worked with some kind of cow before.

I sure am a sucker for snake girls.

Don't get me started on that one, anon. My crazy timeline theories are to be kept secret until such time as they are proven false, so I can just feel silly about the whole thing.

actually Ssen had a fairly normal reaction to the moss judging by grannies reaction to our fight. she was just surprised by how formidable of an opponent she was.

I only took a few minutes for it to wear off
>>
>>28491840
well, fighting poison is different than fighting stronk, it's natural to be surprised. Though it's probably a null issue, chances are there isn't any fancy alchemically treated moss around here.

Did we check out what kind of animals we have on our land? If we've got some good ones, we could get a few hunters working them until such time as we have to develop them for something or other.

"Well, if it is as mediocre as you say there's not much point in wasting money on them. We've got time, and we should have enough to let the cattle herd comfortably grow." You say after some time.

"That's what I reckon too, but I figured it best to wait until you got here." McCain responds

"Better we head back to the ranch and keep exploring."

"Wait, you mean you don't know what's on your ranch?" The harpy asks incredulously.

"Oh no, I know exactly what is on my ranch. Its the other six hundred thousand acres I just found out I had a few days ago."

You slither past the two stunned faces and talk to the bartender. You order an all you can eat meal for yourself and your companions, and between servings of beer battered cod, freshly made bread, and a strange, sweet but spicy dip that necessitates a copious amount of water you learn more about your new help.

Sun Tai, or Ty rather, is another southern continent rancher, Sun ranch being owned by his uncle and him working there for many years. This year however, they felt it was time for Ty to make his own way in the world and he was to try and find employment elsewhere. Apparently McCain got a good deal on the dairy cows with the assurance that we would employ Ty for at least a year.

Marie Robinson, the last name finally learned after some prying, Is a native to the mainland UFK, she grew up in New Citadel and while she was particularly cagey she did mention something about having wanderlust and this being a good way to see the world. Asking her about what started the bar fight made her clam up some, merely saying that she was did not suffer fools easily.

Veles makes his introductions to the group, and while, wisely, not saying anything about the mountain or what may lie on the other side, managed to give a fairly good account of who he was despite his accent.

McCain in the meanwhile

>Introduce yourself? (This is a means for you to shape your backstory some, outside of your parents and your aptitudes for ranching, scholarly pursuits, and marksmanship it is fairly blank.)

>>28494870
Reports of it over have been greatly exaggerated. Just got shanghai'ed this afternoon
>>
>>28494956
>McCain in the meanwhile simple introduces himself and says he's not got much to tell, having been a rancher for the better part of 3 decades.

Don't know where this part went.
>>
>>28494956
you missed your trip. Also welcome back!
Anyway, it will take me some time to think of things we don't already know. A good one, I think, is being born on this new continent, since that wasn't 100% established yet. We've never been to the mainland.

>>
>>28495044
As far as you can remember you have been on this continent, yes.
>>
>>28494956
I brought up the possibility of Sasha being left handed a few threads ago. No idea how to work that into backstory though. Maybe something like being a poor marksmen 'til she tried the other side?
>>
>>28495251
left handed people get shitty evreything
>>
>>28495251
Maybe ambidextrous?
>>
>>28494870
Oh you, always being here at not-quite-the-right-time.
>>28494956
Ugh, I've got not much after some thought. I'd like to do a bit of hunting as a hobby, and to have spent a lot of time bumming around the ranch putting those reading lessons to use with some book or other.
>>
>>28495251
>>28495279
Eh, left handed is fine, and we could have a funny childhood story about poor aim later on.
>>
>>28495279
's fine with me. Or a variation, Some things we can only do left-handed, some right.
>>
Okay, final attempt at getting some rough details down:

Not many childhood friends, as we were raised so far away from town. We made nice with the ranch hands, though, so it wasn't so bad.

Got to go to town several times a year selling and buying cattle, we spent our off time in town visiting the library, taking the occasional swim, and acquiring a taste for fish.

We had a tutor at some point earlier in life. She was very without humor, and a little harsh, but knew her stuff.
>>
>>28495378
and entirely unrelated to past character points:
Can we still get a couple egg-hens while we're in town? Just for quality of life reasons. I am assuming feed too.
>>
>>28495378
this works, but mention the church we saw movies at too
>>
>>28495468
oh yeah, we loved the movies when they came by every so often.

Damn traveling picture shows, always traveling.
>>
yeah, I think we're pretty much done for now. We'll retroactively produce backstory as good ideas come up, as is standard.

"Well, not fair that I ask you all these questions without me answering in kind. I've grown up on this continent, can't say that I've ever set foot on the UFK proper. I was raised by my father a good ways from town on the ranch. Travelled to and from town with him during cattle drives. Picked up a fondness for swimming and a taste for fish from here funnily enough. Too cold to do that on the river at our place. Spend a lot of time reading, learned that from Miss Nancy, favourites being adventure themed stories, especially ones turned into the movies that made the circuit along the road between Snake's Landing and Riverport. My handwriting suffered for a while, as did my marksmanship until I swapped hands. Outside of that, I just took over ranch running duties after my father passed."

Any form of tension long since broken from the meal, you opt to head and check over the cattle. McCain may have outdone himself this time. The cattle look quite fine, and he even managed to wrangle a prize steer out of his dealing. Looking over your finance, you are a bit under your budget for cattle, and while you aimed for 500, its hard to argue with the quality of these. You go to pack your things, moving it back into the carriage.

You note that curiously, McCain isn't in the drivers seat of the carriage, instead it is Marie at the reins with McCain and Ty on horses you don't recognize. Asking about it, you find that part of the 'package deal' that Ty was a part of, included a pair of horses and smaller wagon, more of a cart really, containing his belongings hitched to the rear of your carriage. Asking about Marie's has her show you a moderately sized kitbag next to her on the carriage seat. A call from McCain and the herd starts forward. McCain on the left, Ty on the right, and Marie, Veles, Dahz, and yourself bringing up the rear, starting your way home.

>Going to call the thread here. Wanted to run longer but things came up and I got the wonders of holiday retail waiting for me tomorrow. Apologies.

Eh, all right, see you next time then. Enjoy the turkey rampage. Good to finally have some cattle.

Thanks for running!
