“It's always nice,” you think, “To have a cold drink and a hot meal.” You can remember those days when the only thing you wanted after a long sortie was a hot meal, and then a shower to wash off the grime of battle. Your current situation is similar; you're in the middle of a Sidarxi base and some officer seems to be after your ass. The reasons are obvious: you're a renegade and a rebel; under the law, you should be shot and strung up to make a point. There are a few Sidarxi at the bar, mostly men. It's mostly humans. There's a table in the corner, all human and you recognize Melinda, Yezrina's little helper from about a week ago. You get up and walk over to Melinda and her table.

` “Hello, Miss Crout; a pleasure to see you again,” you say.

It takes a second of dismay for your appearance to register.

“Hello, Mr. Heller,” she says, shaking your hand and inviting you to sit down.

She turns to her friends, who appear to be a group of young office ladies in the ISF.

“Liz, Emily, this is Fred Heller. I met him a while back,” she says, and you note the gross exaggeration, “when I went out to the city. He's a nice fellow.”

You introduce yourself, all smiles and decorum. There's no need to be ungentlemanly here. Once the introductions conclude, you allow yourself to be subjected to a barrage of questions

“What do you do?”

“I am, or was, the owner of a restaurant, 'Heller and Hojo's' before this fighting started,” you say

“How old are you?”

“Twenty-five,” you say.

“Did you fight?”

You want to pour out your anger to them, but realize that this might not be the best idea.
>>
“It was tough, I will admit,” you say, “But I survived. I was drafted, I did what I had to do.”

They give you some sympathies, and you show off a few scars. You are, in fact, the real deal. Melinda gives you some sort of inscrutable look.

“So, what do you do around here?”

As you find out, they do the sort of office work that you expected. Emily, the short, slightly pudgy blonde, works with some military files, but you aren't sure that they are anything high up.

Sorry about my series of screwups yesterday. Today should be better. New day, new trip; I hope I didn't ruin everything from last time.

You politely excuse yourself and go back to the bar for another beer. The bartender looks nice, especially with a mild case of beer goggles. The second beer goes down better than the first.

“So, how are you doing tonight?” you ask her.

“Well enough,” she replies, “You sir?”

“It was a tiring day,” you honestly admit.

“Anything else you need, sir?”

“Just one thing,” you say, “If I said you had a lovely body, would you hold it against me.”

Your mastery of double entendre precedes you. She frowns at your remark, and then bursts into laughter.

“I never thought that,” she says, between bouts of laughter, “That anyone would actually say something like that.”

“It's a natural produce of liquid courage, saying outrageous things.”

She starts to snort as she tries to the volume of her mirth down.

“I'm afraid not, Adonis, but that was pretty funny.”

It would probably be fun to talk to her some more, but there are plenty of people here (though you doubt that many are in high positions). You here a few strings of conversation about various topics, some about the war, other about daily business.

You take her rejection lightly, not that it was ever terribly serious. On the way back, you start to listen to some Sidarxi conversation. It's difficult to hear them with the background noise and their whispering. You hear a few bits a pieces: “fucker,” “humans,” and “absolutely disgusting.” You hope it isn't directed at you, but are fairly sure it isn't.

You pass some more the time with Melinda and her friends. It's a generally pleasant night otherwise. As the bar closes around midnight, you thank them for their company and wave to the bartender. It is at this point you realize that you have a problem: where should you sleep?

[x] Stay with Vetrina, as planned
When are we expected to make contact with Yezrina?
We need to be planning the next attack, and whether it needs to be done against the rebels or against the ISF.

We don't even know if things are going according to plan, and if the rebels are being pushed back like they're supposed to be, or if they're still winning like we had last heard and we need to start killing some of them.
>>
You wave your goodbyes and walk through the warm night back to that Vetrina's apartment. You curtly knock and rock on the balls of your feet as you, somewhat impatiently, wait. The door quickly opens and she ushers you in. By this point, she has changed into what appears to be a silk nightgown.

“Come in quickly,” she says.
She sniffs the air, “You smell, Heller.”

You shrug and take off your coat. She points at a mat and thin blanket spread on the floor. You get the idea that you should sleep there.

“Can I wash off?” you ask.

She sighs, and leads you to a disconcerting chamber of white plastics and metal. A button turns on the water and another regulates the temperature. You once again long for the simple days before aliens invaded earth, bringing high-tech headaches.

After a shower, you are about to go to bed, you think that you should ask Vetrina something

[ ] Ask about the officer
[ ] Ask about her position
[ ] Attempt a pickup line; it should be funny

[x] Ask about her position
We know she's a researcher, but how does that fit into the overall command structure of the Sindarxi occupational forces?
Is she seconded here from a university back on their homeworld? Or is she actually part of the R&D division of their military? Military Intelligence? Or Imperial Intelligence?

hue. Also means we can lull her into thinking we're more a washed up alcoholic than an actual threat.
>>
>>28478096

You lay down on the mat and wait, thinking. You don't like her, her motives are probably bad for your health, and she keeps strange company. You, all things considered, don't know much about her.

“Is there a big university system in the Empire?” you ask her.

“There is,” she replies, peaking her head out from her bedroom.

“Is that the sort of work you're doing here, university research?”

“No, contractor work with the occupation.”

“What kind?” you ask, rolling onto your back.

“The classified kind.”

You aren't sure whether she's being truthful, but shrug it off and go to bed. You don't sleep well. It's too dark, too unfamiliar, and you worry about waking up to a knife at your throat. Morning comes in its inevitability. Your body knows, even without any indication of sunlight. You slowly stand up and walk around in a tired haze. Vetrina does not appear to be awake yet. Checking the time, you find it to be 5:30 in the morning.

Attempt to find any books on Sindarxi culture.
When our bumbling about finally wakes up Vetrina, tell her we were looking for books of Sindarxi literature, so that she can act smug when she gives us the Sindarxi equivalent of a Kindle with a couple eBooks.
Let her think that we were searching for something and that she caught us in the act, and that this is our way of covering it up.

The Sindarxi are naturally suspicious and paranoid; better to funnel her suspicions towards expected routes that we can control, and that are in line with our cover.

supporting this. It's a win win, we could get to learn a bit more about our alien overlords

You start to look around, careful to be quiet. It's hard to see. Damn the aliens, and damn their taste in interior lighting! You come across her desk with one of those slim keyboards. No books. You figure that touching strange alien tech is a bad idea and look around for a bookshelf. Maybe you can finally read one of those famed pieces of Sidarxi literature.

“What are you doing?”

You turn around and see a somewhat frazzled Vetrina walk out of her bedroom in her short nightgown.

“Couldn't sleep,” you say, “I was looking for something to read.”

“Such as?”

“Some of your literature. So many people have recommended it to me?”

She grumbles as she squats down to sort through the drawers of the room, which telescope out from the walls. It's a remarkable clean and space-efficient setup. She passes you a large, floppy device with some sort of screen. Vetrina presses a button, bringing the screen to life. With a few elegant swipes of her finger, she pulls up a text document on the device and hands it to you.

“The Alash, our national epic from thousands of years ago, translated into modern Sidarxi. Do try and get into the poetic meter; it really brings it to life.”

You slowly read it, line by line, aloud and softly. You don't understand everything on the first pass, but you can read it and appreciate the sound. Vetrina sits down next to you and helps you with the troublesome parts.

“It's your fault that I can't go back to sleep,” she softly says.

It's an interesting story of people banished to a distant wasteland as a group of tribes. You can't help but be reminded for the Hebrew Scriptures as you go through the stanzas. Vetrina recites it in a strangely haunting, sing-song tone. You can't help but smile and just let the time pass pleasantly.

That's it for tonight. Thanks
