"...We got back to Mitakihara a few weeks after that. Kharn, well...we tried our best to get her back, to undo what Strauss did to her. We did what we could, but it wasn't enough. I had to make do with what was left of her psyche, too...and what I had to work with, well, that's what you know and love as Kharn today. Rather proud of it myself, even though I created a blonde-destroying monster."

A laugh, one that sounds forced more than anything else. Forced and tired and...defeated.

"Look. I...I know it seems like you're going around in circles, searching for every single nugget of information that I managed to hide before...well, you know." A rustle of leather, most probably from her shrugging.

"But just keep at it. I've tried to plan for everything you may come across, every eventuality that I can think of. I've tried to make sure that you'll have the same resources I had when the shit hits the fan. You're free to ignore what I came up with, of course - what the fuck do I know, right? - but it's there if you need it. Because if there's anything I kept dreaming about, it's that what we're playing against are sneaky cheating bastards, and we need to play as dirty as them."
>>
>>28576486

A cough, sticky and wet. "...Anyway, I don't have much longer. I think I shouldn't need to say it, but in case I do, let's keep everything we talked about earlier between just the two of us. Don't let anyone know, not Kyuubey, not Mami, certainly not Kharn. Don't worry about Omegon, I've left her specific instructions not to access anything I've recorded on Remov as she's repairing it."

More coughing. "Khh. 'Scuse me. Ngh...anyway. Just like your Diary App, I've set Remov to have time-release locks on everything, just in case the person listening to this isn't the one it's meant for. Just let him fly around in your office in Passive Mode, he'll alert you when one's ready for playing."

A few clicking sounds, metal in nature, followed by the hiss of something pressurizing. "Right. Got to run. No rest for the wicked, things like that. Good luck, Murderface, and..." A slight pause. "...whatever happens, don't be too hard on yourself. Even if everything goes to shit...well, we can at least say we tried, right?"

A crackle of static, and another click.

[RECORDED JOURNAL ENTRY ENDS] The servitor skull drones at you, the various machinery and electronics inside its hollow brain case clicking and whirring, lights flickering from its eye sockets. [FURTHER PLAYBACK OF JOURNAL ENTRIES DISABLED, SWITCHING TO PASSIVE MODE]

You're a Magical Girl, and you just finished listening to a dead Magical Girl's recorded thoughts. Telling you about how she rescued the former Warmaster of your Officio from a veritable shithole of a city, with said former Warmaster having already been turned into the monster she was now. ...Well, that's a bit uncharitable, you think. Monsters don't exactly go out to hunt blondes, or have tongues right out of a fetish video.

You glance down at your desk. You sat down in front, took some paper from inside a drawer and a pen. You'd scrawled a few names down, right underneath the impressive printed header that proclaimed that piece of paper as 'From The Desk of the Ninth Warmaster Upon Her Throne Of Skulls'. Nicole Touchdown, Wendy Cooldown, and Karasawa Enyo are some of those names. Odette Brighton and Madaraki Fran are some others, the latter with an underline. And encircled several times, just for emphasis - Emma Strauss.

You breathe out smoke, glowering on your list, before plucking out the filter from your lips and grinding it out on the already-full ashtray beside it.

Of all the names Malal had given you, it's evident which is the most important. The person who changed Kharn so irrevocably that she turned out that way, black metal shit on her arms and legs and rapey powers.

What was she trying to do, the fucking crazy german? Combine a Witch and a Magical Girl? Mad scientist stuff if you've ever heard it. But looking at Kharn...well, you can't not think that the Russian Magical Girl had more than just a bit of Witch in her, moreso when you saw her in action. A monster roaring in berserk fury, twinned with the gleeful cackling of a Magical Girl reveling in bloodshed.

You take your glasses off and massage the bridge of your nose. Nnnh. First you find out about Oriko, now it's this. ...Well, at least you're not wanting for any details, with Malal's little plan revealing itself, piece by piece.

[2/3]
>>
>>28576507

...You should probably ask Wendy about Malal, too, if you ever dream about her again.

You glance out the window of your office. Mitakihara's skyline lighting up the darkening night sky.

Quiet night out.

...Wait, you were supposed to go somewhere, right? Meet someone for something special. That's why you got dressed up by Mami in the first place.

Your eyes go wide as you remember.

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST, YOUR FIRST DATE SINCE EVER AND YOU LOST TRACK OF TIME?

You lost. Track. Of Time. Listening to something that you could've probably put off till later. But noo, you had to get that stupid fucking skull up and talking then, did you? For fuck's sake, you promised yourself you'd stop disappointing people, and Midori's one of them and FUCK YOU'RE LATE FOR THE GODDAMN DATE YOUR PROMISED HER--

Wait. Wait. No. Calm down. Stop. Don't...don't transform just yet. Think for a second.

She never really gave you a time, right? Not even a place. She just said something about it being tonight, a-and you never got anything else past that. Nothing from her on your phone, too, so...that means that's okay, right? That means you haven't fucked things up yet, right?

Right. Right. Yeah. Calm down. It's...it's going to be fine. Somehow.

You shake your head as you sink back down on your chair, slamming your forehead into the polished mahogany surface of your desk. The brief flash of pain preceded by the hollow-sounding (hah) impact.

Calm down. It's...alright. It's probably not your FIRST date, since you don't remember a bunch of stuff. And from what Wendy's told you, you did just fine then, so...yeah. It'll turn out okay. You hope.

Another wooden thunk suddenly erupts inside your room, and you very nearly jump out of your chair at the sound of it. The Golden Desert Eagle already at your hand and aimed towards its source - just as none other than Kyoko Sakura, in civilian clothes, peeks from behind the freshly-opened door to your Office.

"Hey Murderface! I'm here to pick you up for your date with destiny, and--" Kyoko's words trail off as she stares down at the barrel of the oversized handcannon aimed at her. "WHOA! Hey, point that thing somewhere else!" She immediately raises both hands in surrender, her one eye wide. "I just came here to pick you up, Murderface, Chrissakes!"

It's been a very long day and we're not nearly drunk or Murderface enough to deal with this.

Infact, she'd probably be a lot calmer if bullets were actually flying.
>>
>>28577077
I take issue with "the most calm motherfucker" on the planet, but you are right that I think people are projecting a little too much anxiety, yeah.

At the very least, Chiaki's spaghetti is the calmer, deadpan kind anyway. Where it'd take some perceptiveness to not mistake her spaghettiness for just being generally quiet and unsocioable and possibly douchey.
>>
So has anyone else got a multi-stage 'dealing with Iori's bullshit' plan ready to go?
>>
>>28577203

I don't mind Iori? I actually kind of like her now that she's calmed down a bit.
>>
Guys, don't forget about the golden katana/kirika. I know you guys don't care about keeping Oriko alive, but the point is to minimize risk here: Keep pancakes safe, and get more people who know about pinky/end of the world on our side.
>>
>>28577185
Oh, I'm sure she'll have pulled herself together by the time they actually get there.

I just think it'd be appealing for Kyouko to see Chiaki rattled in a way that basically nothing else - including things far more justified - has ever managed.

Dealing with things that want to kill you - easy.
Dealing with things that you might have to live with - hard.
>>
>>28577077

Pretty much yeah. Chick puts her life on the line fighting all the time. So I don't think she will go full on panic mode or anything soon. Especially considering Midori actually helps her relax most of the time.

>>28577224
I'm 100% for keeping Oriko alive, they took advantage of her grief and the stupid bitch inside the staff is poisoning her mind every passing second.

I'm a bit reluctant to take the Katana with us on our date since we haven't had a chance to communicate with it about Oriko yet.
>>
>>28577185

I think most of the anxiety right now is mainly from the thought of being late. The "I almost shot Kyoko in the face" Is just the normal when you open the door without Chaki knowing you're there. She be slightly paranoid.
>>
>>28577102
I can almost see hat-chan doing a bow, like those female employees in supermarkets and stuff...
>>
>>28577288

>I'm 100% for keeping Oriko alive

For me this is more situation based. I don't think we should go out of our way to save her. But if we somehow get the chance we might want to take it.

Otherwise just chop her head off. Preferably with the golden katana for added irony.
>>

You keep the Golden Desert Eagle trained at Kyoko for a few more moments, before shoving it back into your holster and securing it there. For fuck's sake, couldn't she have at least KNOCKED? Is barging in like that something she grew up with in the sticks or what? Because knocking before entering is it's done in the city, by fine, upstanding cityfolk--

"Eh? But I did knock! I made it really loud and everything, just in case you didn't hear me!" Kyoko blinks her one good eye as she strides into the room, long red hair flowing behind her in that topknot ponytail of hers. "Hah, but I know what's gotten you wound up tight an' all."

She sidles up beside you, the widest grin baring her teeth - and it's then that she throws an arm around your shoulders. "It's this date thing with Midori, right? Right?" She gives your ribs a poke or two, making you twitch. "Aww, Murderface, you're going red! Who'da thunk it! HAHAHA!"

Gnh...it's...it's not, alright? You shrug her arm off and slap her poking hand away, before making a show of rearranging your desk. Tearing off the list of names from your notepad and shoving it into your blazer pocket. It's just...you just thought you were going to be late, that's all--

"Aww, you don't hafta lie to yer best friend forever, Kyoko, you know!" Kyoko guffaws, her one eye closed by the gleeful, shit-eating grin threatening to reach her ears. "I know all about datin' and stuff! I take Sayaka out every weekend if our schedules match, so feel free to ask me anything! Anythin' at all!"

And with Enishi having gotten some screen-time, she's officially the least relevant rank-leader! Well, we might want to trade Vindicare secrets or something.

>>
>>28577669

This assumes chaki gave a fuck then. Most likely she won't know much more then anyone else.
>>
>>28577669

Our Squad Leader, if we had one, would have been our immediate superior.

I don't think it's ever been made clear if we had a Squad Leader, but during Kharn's flashback we were working under Mami's authority.

Rea would have been our bosses boss, basically? But according to Enishi she supposedly came in after Kharn left, so...
>>
>>28577653
I think we should talk with our Venenum and Vanus departments. I found it odd that they don't appear to have Rank Leaders, even if they are support departments.

Murderface seemed to be some kind of exception, placed directly under Kharn and Mami, not part of the regular Vindicare chain of command.
>>
>>28577726
But knucklefighters.
>>
>>28577741

Yeah... That's how it was, come to think of it. Girl A worked directly under Mami, and then Murderface worked directly under Kharn. Then Kharn was exiled and Rea was either recruited as Vindicare leader or promoted to Vindicare leader.

Not sure under whose authority Murderface was during that year in between Kharn's exile and becoming Chiaki, but she probably gave Rea a few headaches IF under the regular Vindicare chain of command. Otherwise, it was just headaches for Mami
>>
>>28577722
They might exist outside the chain of command that involves rank leaders since they're noncombatants usually.. And not even in large numbers either. So they might just have "bosses" and have a more office-like heirarchy.

...probably can't do much to a Magical Girl, and MG "unarmed" fighters will still have a magical weapon even if it's just knuckle dusters - some kind of weapon comes with the Soul Gem.
>>
>>28577766
In the spirit of Murderface ruining things for everyone, I propose "why not both?"
>>
>>28577766

Rea getting a headache because Murderface can't integrate properly with the rest of the Vindicare sounds accurate to some degree.

I hope this wasn't the case though.
>>
>>28577766
Bear in mind Mami was acting Warmaster post Kharn, so she probably still wasn't directly under the vindicate chain of command.

Infact, given the phone message we got when we first woke up as Matsuda, and it seems very unlikely - No Vindicare rank leaders in the phone, so were were probably directly attached to Mami and Kyouko (she does, after all, have a track record of setting us on fire as a distraction)

I imagine Sayaka could also have called on our services, but I imagine neither would have been particuarly thrilled with that setup, and it probably only happened if Mami insisted.
>>
>>28577779
Still, as Warmaster, wouldn't it behoove us to at least talk with the chief of our intel division?
And as Mami showed, having combat personnel able to at least stabilize themselves or their comrades (since healing magic is a skill that needs to be learned for many Magical Girls) is quite useful, maybe talking about it with the medical division would be helpful.
>>
>>28577766
I dunno. I can see this happening:
>"Murderface? Yeah, she's pretty easy to handle. See, Murderface is like a gun. You point her at a target, pull the trigger, and pray to the Blessed Lady that she doesn't get distracted by a liquor store or gun shop halfway."
>"Um..."
>"Well, mostly like a gun."
>>
>>28577766
So, who was Vindicare rank leader prior to Kharn leaving then? We haven't heard of any big deaths other than the Culexus, and obviously Murderface wasn't rank leader...
>>
>>28577688
Okay for some reason picture failed to load
I did have a picture that suited it
>>
>>28577878

Mami was the Vindicare Rank Leader during Kharn's time as Warmaster. When Kharn was exiled, Mami took over as interim-Warmaster
>>
>>28577779
According to the explanation Midori gave Chiaki after the amnesia surge in Siberia, that's exactly how these ranks work. Removed from active field duty, put in office, medical, intelligence, etc instead. No rank leaders for eliminated ranks.

>>28577863

Right. Okay. So Kyoko's the Dating Guru in this parts, you get that. Sure, you'll ask her a question.

"Sure! Ask away, and I'll answer!" The red-haired Eversor crows, completely confident in herself.

Alright, Dating Guru. What the fuck happened to her neck? Is that a normal part of dating, or what?

"Eh? What about my neck? I don't--" Kyoko blinks her one good eye at you, brow furrowing as she places her fingers on her neck - before suddenly going red and clamping her hand over her skin. "I, uh, hahaha! It's...it's probably just an insect bite! Y-yeah! Flies and such are biting in this kinda weather, you know! It's been really chilly!"

Insect, huh? Must have been a really big, blue-haired insect. You could still see the teeth marks, there.

"K-kh....N-Knock it off, Murderface, geez! Take this seriously, I'm tryin' to help you here!" She pokes you in the ribs again before you could slap her hand away. "You're my Warmaster and everythin', but don't think I'll keep bailing you out if ya jerk me around like this!"

What happened to being Best Friends Forever? You shake your head here, managing a smile of your own. Fine, fine. Something...something about the date, then.

Namely, how do you talk? What do YOU talk about during the date? You're pretty sure you shouldn't talk about work, because you're practically her boss and everything. And what are you not supposed to do during a date?

"Oh, huh." Kyoko blinks again, seemingly genuinely surprised. "Weird."

What's weird?

"Nah, I just..." She laughs, here. "I was thinking that I was gonna hafta spell that one out for ya, Murderface! Hahaha--OW!"

Now she's the one getting her ribs poked. Is that any kind of way to talk to her Warmaster?

[1/2]
>>
>>28577970

"Ow! Alright, alright! Geez! You're just supposed to poke, not try and stab somebody through their ribs with yer hand!"

Oh. Uh, right. Sorry. Your bad.

"S'alright." Kyoko grumbles, rubbing her side. "Anyhow! For that kind of stuff, ya should always follow the H.A.D. formula!"

H.A.D. formula?

"Hobbies, Ambitions, Dreams! Guaranteed panty-peeler!" Kyoko cackles. "Always make her feel like she's the center of your universe, and never steer the conversation towards work or yourself unless she does it in the first place!" It's here that she suddenly grows serious. "Oh, and you gotta make sure not to murder somebody during the date."

I am getting the feeling that NECO will be running interference to make sure our date goes well and we will ruin it by paranoia and wanting to get rid of her
>>
>>28578140
>>28578151

And we still should talk to her about it, Im pretty sure she is bottling up a lot. Depending on how the date goes and how the mood is it might be a good idea to ask her about that since.. well.. its an important part of our live and unfortunatley she will have to deal with our baggage if Midorin wants to date us because its not the kind of baggage you can leave at the door.

That said, I find it interesting that Malal pointed out again to not trust Kharn and Mumi. Malal was probably ware of Kharns infatuation with the BlessedLady-Shit so this is why she warned us.

With Mami it might be a lot more complicated. Either because Mumi was playing Chiaki liek a fiddle the whole time since it also is in line with the foreshadowing of how stuff works inside of Mumi`s Head and her mortivation we got in her flashback.

Or because Malal was wary of mumi because while she is veteran and one of the most powerful megucas around she also has a liable psyche and is susceptible to emotional breakdowns like shown in the Animus and again pointed out by Homura in the Movie with how she dislikes Mami and never really got along with her.

Right. Okay. Hobbies, ambitions, dreams. You can handle that.

Not murdering anyone during the date...well, come on. Be reasonable. Surely she can't expect you to--

"No. No murdering anyone, Murderface! Not on the date! You'd think that'd impress 'em and such, or beating up anyone who looks at 'em the wrong way, but they'll hate that! They'll say that you ruined the evening and everything! I'm serious here!"

Kyoko's actually tearing up a bit here as she says this to you, both hands on your shoulders.

Yeah...yeah, okay. You'll...you'll try. You'll really, really, really try.

"I know ya would, but I gotta make sure." She wipes her eyes with the back of her hands. "We'll be stoppin' by your vault to put your gun there."

Kyoko frowns here. "Aw, don't give me that look like I just pissed all over your cornflakes there, Murderface! I promised Midori I'll make this the one night you don't carry that junk around. Gold-free date."

But...but what if you need to murder--

"I told you--"

Er, you mean, defend yourself and Midori. What about then?

"Well, that's why I'll be there, of course! Chaffeur and lookout!" The red-haired Eversor points at herself. "Anybody tries to get their hands on you or on Midori, I'll drop 'em like an elk! Hahaha! Like a freakin' elk!"

...Right. Well. That certainly makes you feel safer.

Any other tips the Dating Guru can share, then?

It's here that Kyoko grins. "Seriously? Well...besides the no-murderin' thing, I guess just act like yourself, then? I mean, Midori really seems to like you and everything, and I don't think it's just because of that porn thing she draws." She gives you a stinging slap on your lower back that forces your breath out between your teeth in a hiss. "Just remember, no murdering and you're set!"

No murdering. Okay.

"You ready, then?"

Yeah. You're pretty much set, anyway.

"I can see that!" Kyoko looks you up and down, seemingly just noticing your new clothes for the first time. "Hahaha, Mami-chan really knows how to pick out stuff when it comes to fashion, eh? She can even make slobs like you an' me clean up alright! Hahaha!"

...Yeah. You guess so. You miss your costume, though.

"Well, of course ya do, you even sleep in the damn thing." Kyoko shrugs. "Then again, I also did a bit of that. Until Sayaka made me stop, anyway."

It's just so convenient, you tell her. So comfortable. Yeah, you'll complain about some bits of it, but it always feel so familiar, like a second skin.

"Yeah. Yeah, I getcha. Like wearin' a really tailor-made suit. Fits you just right and everything." She lets out a wistful sigh. "Anyway...! Let's get cracking, before Midori-chan starts worrying!"

And so you do. After a brief detour of your Golden Weapon Vault - Muramasa all but rattling against its plexiglass case as you placed both the Desert Eagle and the Bangles into their own respective cases - you finally set out into the city in the usual black company car, with Kyoko as your driver. She did say you could take Kharn's Marauder to the date, but it's not exactly discreet, is it?

"I don't see it," Kyoko frowned then, clearly not minding the fact that even the car's grill had skulls engraved on them. "I mean, it's a pretty nice car! The windows're heavily tinted, too, how can you get more discreet than that?"

You waved off her objections and got into the NORMAL company car, a 2014 Chrysler 300 painted black and with NO SKULLS anywhere. Yes. Perfect.

"These things are usually driven by Sicilian drug lords, though?"

It's normal enough!

[1/2]
>>
>>28579231

Anyway. With Kyoko on the wheel, you find yourself being driven out of the city, out of Mitakihara. ...Huh, did Kyoko get lost or something? Maybe she missed a turn or somewhat?

"What? 'Course I didn't! I know where to go!" Kyoko frowns at you from the rear view mirror as she turns into what looks like the freeway out of Mitakihara. "What, were you expecting some kinda dinner in some fancy restaurant or something?"

...Well, isn't that how it usually goes? Going into some posh place where the prices're unlisted and the dish names unpronounceable?

"Actually, you're not that far off!" The red-haired girl laughs at this. "Midori-chan was lookin' for that kinda place for reservations, until she asked Mami-chan for advice. And she knows how you HATE that kinda place. So this is sorta special. Not your typical kinda date."

It's here that she chuckles. "Mami-chan wanted to make sure that you get a bit of alone time, too. Away from the city, away from work, all that stuff." Kyoko sniggers here, before checking the rear view mirror again. "Hah. Gotta try harder if you wanna tail me, cat..." She murmurs under her breath, a fang poking through her grin.

How do you react?

The phone clattered to the ground, shattering into a dozen pieces. Strauss could see her hand shaking, stiff and frozen in position, but her grip gone. Her breath roared through her nostrils.

Betrayed.

It was the one thing that she had never factored into her calculations. All of her life's work, gone in the blink of an eye. Every sacrifice - every ounce of blood, sweat and tears - wasted. For what? One worthless, quivering girl? The wretch could barely muster enough nerve to form a complete sentence when she arrived. Strauss had made her strong. Physically, mentally, every part of her had been molded into the perfect killing machine.

An assistant had once referred to the procedure as 'deus ex machina' - god from a machine. She wasn't quite a god, the Doctor had to admit. She still bled, as mortals did. She could still be killed. But it was a start. Now, that cowardly, idiotic failed experiment that called herself a 'doctor' had her. The imbecile that could barely even speak German after all their years together. Strauss closed her eyes and took a moment to compose herself.

"Na schön," she muttered under her breath as she clasped her hands together. "Zen I dearly hope zat you vill be able to live vis ze conseqvences of your actions, Oberhaupt Direktorin."

The Doctor took a deep breath as she sat down at her desk. It was a nice desk. Big and mahogany, with her name plate on the front and everything. She would miss that desk. Her office was as big as she'd always wanted. There were book shelves filled with medical science books, filing cabinets filled with her own research papers, even a few potted plants that she'd taken a liking to. Every doctor's office needed a fern, and maybe one of those little waterfall fountains with the tiny fishing men. Display cases along the walls showed off her collection of antique surgical equipment. Her favourite was the hand-cranked skull saw. She'd even let Valnikov play with it on the odd occassion. After she... opened up more, the girl would cackle madly as she spun the crank as fast as she could, making "BRANANANANA!" noises like a chainsaw. Strauss was somewhat disappointed that she'd never gotten around to letting the child try it out for real.

"Sorne, get in here!" The Doctor called out to her Head of Security over her intercom.

After a hurried, nervous "Jawohl, Doktorin." from the other end, Strauss leaned back in her chair, then took off her glasses to rub her tired eyes. A heavenly, comfortably leather chair with a headrest at just the right height. She'd never found another quite like it, no matter how hard she'd looked. It would probably have to go, too. As she waited for her security officer to arrive, Strauss bent under her desk, grunting and straining as she pulled her computer onto her lap. She disassembled it with nimble fingers - a well-practiced skill - and had the hard drive removed and placed in her cape's pocket by the time she heard the first knock on her door.

"Herein!" Strauss shouted, shoving the computer back in its place.
>>
A thin girl wearing a green padded vest of a security officer stepped into the room, thumping a fist over her chest as she stood at attention. The entire right side of her body was scarred, mangled and burned, her right eye a solid sphere of white. Long, jet black hair grew from only one side of her disfigured head. Her name was Captain Eliza Thorne, one of the Doctor's very first test subjects - with the scars to show for it. Strauss replaced her glasses and leaned over her desk, rhythmically tapping a pen as her gaze fixed on the Head of Security.

"Ekaterina Valnikov has been kidnapped," she said, dead-pan. "How vas ze Culexus able to infiltrate ze buildink? I find it hard to believe zat she had proper ausorization, hm?"

"Er, Doktorin," the girl stammered, struggling to keep her composure. At least this one knew how to properly address her superior in German. That managed to set her on a level above Madaraki on the competence scale. "It seems that the Culexus, Malal, was in posession of an ID badge. The guards didn't believe it was suspicious."

Strauss tapped the pen at an ever so slightly quicker pace. "An ID badge," the Doctor's face twitched subtly as she repeated the phrase. "Und did zis ID badge belonk to her?"

"N-no, Doktorin," Thorne responded, now visibly shaking as she stood at attention. "We were unable to find out who it belonged to. It, erm, was worn backward, Doktorin."

"Vorn... BACKVARD?!" Strauss shouted as she slammed a fist into the desk. "YOU HAVE ALLOWED MY LIFE'S VORK TO BE STOLEN FROM UNDER OUR NOSES BECAUSE ZE CULEXUS VORE A BACKVARD ID BADGE?! VHAT IS ZE POINT OF AN ID BADGE IF YOU DUMMKOPFS NEVER CHECK ZEM?! YOUR MEN ARE AVARE ZAT VE DO NOT EVEN HAVE ANY CULEXUS ON STAFF, JA?!"

The Doctor held her head in her hands, nearly ripping out her hair as she fumed. The security officer was close to tears as she apologized over and over, still at attention. It had never been wise to upset the Doctor. Captain Thorne knew that better than anyone else. Which was why it surprised her immensely - and terrified her on an entirely new level - when Strauss finally looked up, looking calm and composed as ever.

"Tell your best men to pack my sinks," Strauss instructed as she rose from her seat. She slapped her pen against her hand as she circled the security officer, dictating her orders. "I vant everysink in mein office on a plane to storage facility six-two-six visin two hours - write zis down if you must. Vunce zis is done, I vant all lines of communication vis ze outside vorld severed. Everysink. Phone lines, cell towers, internet, post office, carrier pigeon, ze vorks. Find me vhen all of zis is complete. In ze mean time... I have cleanink to do."

"D-Doktorin, but that would mean-"

Strauss stared at the shivering girl over the tops of her round glasses.

"Protocol Ten vill commence in six hours."

Strauss stared over a crowd of a dozen nervous men and women in sterile, white labcoats in the dank, green-tinged observatory lab. The Doctor was flanked by a pair of stone-faced men with assault rifles casually slung over their shoulders. The scientists were the best and brightest that Strauss could find - or at least those smart enough to abide by proper security protocols. Each and every one of them looked utterly terrified as the Doctor stepped up to a makeshift podium made from an up-ended examination table and cleared her throat.
>>
"Good afternoon, ladies und gentlemen," Strauss began, as if no different from a routine meeting. "As many of you have no doubt heard, zere have been some changes in ze management of ze Sirteens. Naturally, zis means zat many of you vill, unfortunately, be out of vork. It has been an immense pleasure to vork vis each and every vun of you, und I can say from ze bottom of mein heart, it vill be sad to see you all go-"

"D-Doctor, please--!"

A bang rang out as the man's body crumpled to the floor.

"VOULD ANYVUN ELSE CARE TO INTERRUPT MEIN HEARTFELT FAREVELL SPEECH?!"

Strauss' glare swept over the room, along with the smoking barrel of her pistol. Satisfied that no one else would dare interject again, she holstered the weapon and continued.

"AS I VAS SAYINK. I vill alvays look back fondly at ze many memories ve have made togezer. Like ze time ve accidentally locked Annabelle in ze rhinoceros cage over night!" The Doctor laughed with a twinkle in her eyes. "Or- Or who could ever forget ze first time zat Doktor Cheong forgot to disengage Butterfingers' stimulant injector ven ze interns vere cleaning his cell! Or ze second time! Or ze sird time! It alvays makes me laugh! Vhat fun ve had!"

"I sink... Vhat I am tryink to say here is... Each of you has a very special place in mein heart zat no vun else could ever replace," Strauss said as she placed both hands over heart in an uncharacteristically delicate gesture. She then turned around to address her guards, waving a finger in the air in a circular motion.

"Kill zem."

Half an hour left. Strauss snapped her golden pocket watch shut and grinned. It
wasn't her usual maddened, shark-toothed smile; it was closer to a snarl than anything else. She had been taught a valuable lesson regarding her own fallibility. She had been blinded by her own success. Everything had gone far too well for her plans to continue unchallenged. But, there would be plenty of time for revenge. Emma Strauss was a creature of patience.

All that was left of her office now was a barren desk, empty shelves and single red rotary phone sitting on the Doctor's lap. In just a few more hours, someone would charge into the building, hoping to capture the legendary Doctor Strauss. Instead, all they would find would be the broken husk of what was once Varrigan City and a cruel reminder of what had been allowed to pass there.

A sharp knock at the door caught Strauss' attention just as she was about to doze off in her chair. A moment later, Thorne stepped into the office, saluting with a scarred, mangled hand before standing at attention.

"Doktorin, the preparations are complete," she stated. "Your helicopter is fueled and ready to take off. The men stand ready to carry out Protocol Ten."

Strauss nodded solemnly. There was only one final order of business that remained.

"I vill be alonk shortly," the Doctor responded, waving the girl off. "If you vouldn't mind, I vould like a few minutes alone to... say good bye."

Thorne nodded, amazed at the uncharacteristically sentimental display, then stepped back out of the room.
>>
The Doctor took a final, deep breath as she lifted the bright red phone off of its reciever. Long ago, before Strauss herself had taken up residence in the city, a hotline had been built. It led from the Horzine Biotech headquarters directly to the Warmaster's office onboard the Rafflesia, in case some emergency required her attention while she was away. Now, with preparations for Protocol Ten underway, it was the sole means of communicating with the outside world from within Varrigan City.

Everything had to be timed perfectly. Strauss had waited until the Rafflesia was far enough away that they could not possibly reach the city in time to stop the coming purgation. With any luck, Chief Director Madaraki would still be busy celebrating the fall of Doctor Emma Strauss. It seemed unlikely that anyone had even set foot in her office yet. It was perfect.

The phone rang once. Twice. Three times, before Strauss' own pre-recorded message greeted her, followed by a long beep.

"Good evening, Oberhaupt Direkt-" Strauss stopped to compose herself, snickering. "Entschuldigung, CHIEF DIRECTOR Madaraki. I vould first like to congratulate you on your ill-gotten promotion, you disgutink abomination. Very vell done, bravo, I couldn't have done it better myself. Secondly - und I do hope you are still listenink, because zis is important - I vould like to pass on my sincerest regrets for vhat vill soon come to pass. By ze time you hear zis message, Protocol Ten vill have been carried out, und every man, voman, und child in ze city of Varrigan vill likely be dead. I believe ze city has a population of... seven hundred sousand? I sink zat is right, check mein computer if you vould like to know ze exact number. I'm sure zat you have ze passvord by now."

"Zeir blood vill be on your hands, Madaraki," she continued, twirling the phoneline around her finger. "Every night you vill lie avake in bed, sinking of ze mistakes you made zis day, sinking of every life lost because you just had to steal vun, measly little fraulein. You vill tell yourself zat zey vere just ze dregs of society, zat of all zem vere nosink more zan punks und ganksters. Nein, zose vill probably be ze vuns zat survive. It is ze innocents, ze weak und ze children zat vill die first."

"Hundreds of sousands for vun life. Zis is ze price of your 'mercy'," Strauss hissed. "Auf Wiedersehen, you vile creature. I hope it vas vorse it."

With her grim message delivered, the Doctor hung up the phone and placed it on her desk. Taking up her cane, Strauss hobbled to the doorway and looked back into the office one final time. She remembered how excited she was the first time she saw it. Finally, after all her hard work, getting a big, new office. For once, there was actually enough room to put things on display, to show off a little. Now it was gone.

Strauss stepped into the hall, flanked by Thorne as she slowly hobbled down the green-tinged halls of the Horzine Biotech headquarters. It felt so recent that she'd gotten upset at the builders for mistakenly ordering green-tinted fluorescent bulbs. As time went on, she'd come to enjoy it, however. Coupled with the ever-present sterile scents of sanitizer and cleaning products, it gave the building a certain sinister air that made it so endearing.
>>
The ceiling tiles had been converted to transparent grates ever since one of the Doctor's failed experiments had escaped and taken up residence the vents and ceiling spaces. For months, staff would occasionally disappear when left alone in the halls for too long and complain about a scratching sound behind the walls. In the end, they found a heap of skeletons stashed in a forgotten maintence corridor, once the creature had finally accumulated enough grief to turn into a witch. Much of the staff would find themselves having panic attacks at the mere sight of any spiders following that particular incident - which provided the Doctor with some interesting material come April Fool's.

Enormous glass windows decorated the walls, showing off the interiors of break rooms and offices. Strauss was frightening - some might have even called her a monster - but even she wasn't above joking around and discussing projects with her staff over a cup of coffee.

"Doktorin," Thorne asked, bending down to look at the Doctor's face, "are you okay?"

"Ja, ja," Strauss waved her off. "I am fine. Ze- Ze cleanink supplies, ze smell makes mein eyes vater. It's nosink."

The security officer knew better than to press any further. The two walked together through the halls in silence for some time. Every now and then, the sound of marching feet or the cry of some experiment echoed through the narrow halls. Strauss had already spent her final hours in the building saying good bye to each of Thorne's 'sisters'; something which the security officer was fortunately not present for.

Only ten minutes remained by the time they stepped out onto the tarmac. There, an idling private helicopter awaited the Doctor with its loading ramp down. The sky was painted in colours of orange and grey as evening began to settle in over Varrigan City. Everywhere she looked, crewmen ran to and fro, tending to a bevy of waiting Apache gunships and Chinook transports parked along the edge of the airstrip.
>>
Strauss made a single, slight nod of resignation as she looked up at the helicopter.

"Vell, Sorne," she muttered, turning to the other girl and stretching out a hand, "it has been a pleasure vorking vis you."

The scarred security officer blinked, taken aback by the sudden act of respect, then took the Doctor's hand and shook it.

"It has been an honour, Doktorin."

Giving Thorne a final pat on the shouler, Strauss stepped up to the helicopter and began to clamber in. After a few moments of struggle, due mostly in part to her bad back, she took her seat as the pilot handed her a clunky headset. The Doctor tapped the microphone twice as the chopper began to lift off.

"Testink, testink," she muttered. "Zis is on?"

The pilot responded with a silent thumbs up.

"Ah, guten Abend, everyvun!" She called out. "Protocol Ten vill now commence! Initiate phase vun!"

Peering out the window, Strauss watched intently as a group of five Apaches took off. The first phase of Protocol Ten was simple: destroy every bridge off of Jefferson Island and burn the harbour. Every one of the pilots had been run through strenuous background checks and training to ensure that they were able to carry out their sordid task. Her own helicopter was just starting to scratch five thousand feet when a series of explosions rocked the city. Smoke and flame wafted upward from each possible point of egress. None could be allowed to escape.

But that wasn't all.

The Doctor watched as the Apaches turned back toward the headquarters, beginning their second attack run. The transports- along with most of the airstrip - disappeared into a blossoming garden of fire as the attack helicopters swooped overhead. Strauss could swear that she could even pick out the tiny figure of Thorne staring up at her. She almost felt bad about the whole affair. Almost.

"Phase one complete," said a voice over the radio, "standing by."

Strauss chuckled as her gaze shifted just in time to see the red neon sign of the Blood God's Arena come crashing down. She had always hated that awful thing.

"Initiate phase two!"

Assuming the men on the ground were still willing to do their jobs, they would be fortifying the main building. They had all been told that Protocol Ten would entail the systematic destruction of the city. Scorched Earth policy, and all that. Instead, it was quite the opposite - at least to Doctor Strauss. Even from her vantage point, Strauss could hear it beginning. Horrid, animal screams and roars emanated from the Horzine building as each and every one of her hundreds of experiments was simultaneously released from captivity.

It took only a few seconds before she saw the first doors swing open as people began to stampede out of the building. Some of the faster creatures were already on top of them, tearing hapless victims limb from limb. One or two would get shot down, only for something bigger and stronger to emerge from the bowels of the building.

"Ready to go, ma'am?" The pilot asked.

Strauss was silent for a moment, lost in the sight of her creations finally set loose. There was a certain child-like rush to it, like building an enormous tower out of blocks, only to finally smash it to pieces.

"Ja," she mumbled, still unable to pry her gaze away from the destruction. "Take us avay."

Almost in the same moment as she had finished speaking, an explosion tore through one of the upper floors of the building, carrying away several black specks that may have been people. Strauss watched, a satisfied, toothy grin plastered to her face. Her revenge hadn't been delivered just yet, but it was a start. She had gone out with a proper bang and brought down an entire city with her. For the time being, she would be satisfied.

So began the exile of Doctor Strauss.

INTRODUCTION
Long time ago, it had been written, that the one who knows his enemy, as well as himself, needs not fight a hundred battles. While I don't intend to disagree with the great man who wrote so at all, it's vital to understand, that his point stands in the realm of pure logic.

It does not, and was never meant to, account for the battles that must be fought. It doesn't consider that choosing morality, or emotion, even impulsive actions, rather than calculating outcomes coldly, may often be the right path. Both Magical Girls and Witches are definitely beings born out of passion. And, what‘s more, they were brought to existence for the exact purpose of avoiding that chilling, hopeless world, that terminal station of reason.

A Witch is all that‘s left once we leave reason behind. We have the terrible fortune of having to deal with mystical elements, which we don't truly understand, on daily basis. It seems, that everytime you try to establish a rule followed by all Witches, in order to gain advantage, you are eventually faced with one who throughly breaks it.

I have thought that Witches have no control, and then I've met the martial artist Witch.
I have doubted their wits, and bit the substitute hook, line, and sinker.
I have used to consider witches mere things that just happen to contain some leftover thoughts, believed that the writings in their world are something like shadows of their past, and that I am putting them out of their misery, only to be begged by a teary-eyed witch to spare her Familiars, in rather broken Japanese.

Some Witches are so fragile in what they are, that their nature changes under one's hand, and some are so strong within their world, that they can just do and be whatever they decide on, whenever.

An Incubator would add, that this shifty unreliability and imperfection is the most valuable trait in humans.
>>
What, then, you may ask, is the point of Witches being cataloged, and why should you read a book concerning the lore of Witches?

Even if we disregard the quote of a strategist, there is also a much simpler saying: "Knowledge is power". Have you ever considered how much weaker could the Incubator's occasional "You don't need to know" be making you? It is my personal belief, that you do, indeed, always need to know. If knowledge holds no value to you itself, let it be power to protect what you hold dear, as well as smite that which you detest, that compels you to read on.

Your learning materials are going to be mostly speculations about the internal mechanics of a Barrier, observations about certain stronger Witches that might give you the much needed edge over them, should you face the still living ones in the future, and finally, the gathered personal accounts of many girls regarding the more interesting Witches they have faced. Please, understand that the Classification of this book is E, meaning it merely must not leave the Twelfth Officio, but every operative can freely read it. This in turn means that it doesn't use anywhere near all the information available, and it most definitely won't use a single page located in the Librarium. Despite that, it will usually attempt to figure out the true state of things, using only the information that is not highly classified.

Most notably, it must not contain any firsthand accounts from the Witches or Familiars themselves, even if the author did have access to a number of these.
>>
Because of that, please keep in mind, the path to understanding is twisted itself, before even attempting to unwrap the chaos that most Witches revel in. The reader may attempt to memorize the many apparently nonsencial, and, at a glance, eldritch 'rune' scripts used by Witches, which clearly don't mantain any of the basic rules of scriptwriting, fit neither for pen, nor brush. But it would be much more useful if she chose to wiew it as battle notes, an excercise in tactics. And it might be more befitting of a wise person as well - after all, what you are fighting is a girl much like you, with her own life, which must also have been lacking, otherwise she never would have made the wish. Would you pry into her mind, if she was still human?

I had been, quite uniquely as I am told, gifted with telepathy as my major power, so I've never had a choice in this matter. Someone else might find it to be an issue, though. Whether you can put this knowledge to practical use, and whether you would let pity stray your aim anyway, you will probably find, that through understanding the nature of Witches, you are coming to understand the nature of magical girls as well.
>>
ON THE SOURCES OF IMAGERY
There is no single point that the contents of a Barrier would come from. If you would have believed a Barrier to just be the projection of a girl's mind, twisted with a certain complicated pattern every time, which is a common misconception, simple observation proves that wrong.

A great example of this are the writings from arcane texts found in many barriers. Obviously, many Magical Girls of the Twelfth have memorized passages from the Necronomicon or the Tabula Smaragdina, so it would make perfect sense for these verses to find their place into their future Barrier, if they held them in high regard. But, take Goethe's theatrical novel, Faust, which happens to be the most common of these texts by far. It does intristically fit into most - perhaps all – Barriers, without question. But I doubt that all of the girls that have it present in their Barrier have read it. Actually, a quick poll in the Central Archive had proven that only few of the Vanus working there - all of them having some degree of education in literature per the Officio tradition - have actually ever read the book, or even seen any sort of an adaptation.

Therefore, it seems that culture is a major force in a Barrier, and is completely unattached from the Witch herself. Human culture, to be exact, and mind that extraterrestrial witches come across as completely foreign and alien.

I cannot simply explain why this works the way it does to a layman, because it had requied years to learn, and the intricacies of karma and fate are the most esoteric part of all magic. Still, I will try to further illustrate this issue on the profile of one of the known Great Witches, Liliana. After all, her Barrier is simple, compared to a standard Witch, but possibly the most well known of all to us.

Kamile Ignalina [Cl. Rank: E]
Status: Active Witch

Kamile was the former Eversor Rank Leader of the Twelfth, a person of considerable skill, who had served the Officio for four years. She had turned into a Witch of her own volition, after being told about her upcoming promotion to a Warmaster, as witnessed by a significant part of the Officio staff. Using her own words, she did it "just to spite the cat and wreck his oh so important resources, because now it doesn't really matter anymore". Her Barrier had completely leveled the former Offico spaces in the catacombs under Prague's "Faust House", and she had subsequently killed more than a hundred of the Officio operatives present at the time, including some of the Vanus. Her rampage was only ended by the Warmaster's Aide issuing an order for tactical withdrawal.

This event had prompted many changes within the Officio policy and structure.

Liliana, Witch of Escapism [Cl.Rank: E]
Also known as: "The Big Fish"

Card: [Witch of Escapism, with an immature nature. Even the act of facing her foes is running away from her immature nature that wants to run away. Attack and defense have become one, and she can't tell the hunter from the hunted anymore. To run away completely is to refuse every choice.]

Engagements: 61, officially. Possibly more, held responsible for at least three unrelated squads of girls from different officios suddenly going MIA on the sea. Still active, always on the move.

Barrier: It simply consists of sea surface with oversized walnut shells. In her first appearance, she had completely flooded the place with seawater, which remained even after she was long gone. On land, her barrier can only be entered through a water source in the area, which is generally dangerous and not advisable, since you would pop up under the surface. The water is filled with various rusty junk. It also seems, that deep below, on the bottom of the sea, there is pool floor. Strangely enough, that is all, there is nothing such as a Labyrinth. This, in practice, means that Liliana will immediately attack anyone who enters her Barrier within seconds.
>>
There are no sightings of her Familiars anywhere outside the barrier, and they don't seem to attempt giving witch kisses to anyone. Liliana doesn’t seem to really use them for anything, try to feed them, or even acknowledge their existence at all. They aren’t aggressive, either. As a band, they are apparently attempting to play Led Zeppelin’s Moby Dick.

In combat, she is often described as incredibly fast for her size, and extremely tough. Despite that, she had been beaten, wounded, and chased away in the past, but always at great costs. Engaging her with any sort of power is definitely not recommended, unless you know precisely what you are doing. Tactics that made it even possible were mainly flying, great land speed, and teleportation, but they can’t win the battle alone.

In the past, there were periods when scrying on Liliana would only reveal cold, empty space, suggesting she has left Earth. But she always comes back.

god damn Moby Dick.
>>
Commentary:
I did not get to meet her, but miss Ignalina was very fond of Moby-Dick. She had apparently claimed that it has no place in the libraries for children, would quote it all the time, and it’s no surprise to anyone that she had ended up becoming a whale herself. I will skip over the main theme, though, mostly because it would inevitably mean going into the reasons for why she did what she did, which seems to be a touchy subject around here. I have no idea myself, anyway.

The way it uses nutshells reminds me of the tradition of children sending nutshells with candles on water. This has no real meaning, kids just do it because it looks nice, and technically, it could mean anything she had associated this childhood memory with. If I had to guess, though, it’s usually done at night, so not only friendship, but also loneliness , isolation, possibly even fear, would be obvious guesses. The nutshells are a good example of association, usually the really fickle part of a Barrier.
>>
The pool bottom had only ever been seen, because someone fell into the water by accident - in the water, you will get eaten right away. I don’t see much sense in it, but the girl who saw it says that it had appeared out of nowhere when she had looked that way.

Well, sometimes, you can do something in the Barrier that you aren’t expected to do, and the whole place then has to adapt to what you did - much like if you had confronted someone with a whole new way of thought and he had to make his mind about it on spot. You can jump through a window that was only supposed to be a decoration, you can pull a rope and all the familiars just die all of sudden as if their strings were cut, something weird may happen if you hit a light switch one too many times. I have known a powerful girl, who would smash down on a witch so hard, she would often break through the floor of the Barrier, the hole leading to a completely different world before dissipating along with the Witch. These places are fragile, because they were just made, and are also incredibly dangerous.
>>
The penguins are surprisingly the most interesting part of it all. You see, much like Miss Ignalina had, as she said, never actually seen a real whale – which is why she doesn’t dive and jump like one at all and just jumps out of the water like a piranha and bites everything in her path – she had propably never seen a penguin either. She had better things to do than visiting a ZOO, and considering her service history, she may well have been that one kind of a Magical Girl who had lived in the twisted world for so long, she had lost the entire notion of correctness. She had relied on her instinct a lot, and you may remember that she had described the way she fights Witches as "Kind of like doing what a smart animal does when it has to attack a human."
>>
Her motherland, Lithuania, is far from the South Pole, so unless she was a passionate Linux user or so, adding a penguin through association is ridiculous. On the other hand, penguins do carry a general meaning, and thus it could be a case of an aforementioned cultural pattern. They are being used by many present day literary authors of various backgrounds and foci, as representatives for higher planes and forces. They also often represent the human unconscious and dreams, both of which fit right within a Moby-Dick Barrier.

It gets a lot more interesting, though: There is no proper source for this meaning. The history of its usage is less than a hundred years old, because nobody has previously really cared about penguins, and older meanings seem to outright contradict it. All those writers are adding them, because they themselves feel like they fit. The meaning had historically first appeared in quite the obscure books, but ended up being referred to by even the most famous of psychologists. Sometime before the World War II, all the smart people had suddenly started dreaming about penguins. So, penguins are, in this sense, definitely a part of human culture now, but their presence in it is hard to justify by logic, and what they represent is the part of humanity which can’t be properly explained, either.
>>
>>28580102
This is awesome and very scary
>>
Are you seeing the patterns yet? Witches are thoroughly insane, but their insanity is the one of man. You must understand this. Fighting them and fighting humans or other Magical Girls is the exact same thing. If you ever come across wars, or inter - Officio conflicts, the next time you kill someone whose language and customs you don’t comprehend, give it a thought.

>needs not fight a hundred battles
Well, this is wrong, since the quote is "If you know your enemy, and know yourself, you need not fear the RESULT of a hundred battles."
Also, >It doesn't consider that choosing morality, or emotion, even impulsive actions, rather than calculating outcomes coldly, may often be the right path. is pretty much regarded as incorrect by many of the commentators on the work, since morality, and taking moral action, nearly takes up an entire chapter on how a general should prosecute a war and when a king should initiate one.
As for the right path being often chosen based on emotions, that really does not appear to be the case, and the commentators explained why, as it usually led to defeat and failure.

Culture playing a part in a Witch's powers and Barrier is an interesting idea, but I have to question a lot of the ancillary ideas tossed about by this Misaki.

I don't think that's necessarily true - certainly it could be argued that Ghengis Khan and his horde did more damage/was worse than Hitler, but his not exactly being contemporary should seriously hurt his chances at winning. Same for Cao Cao although at least he has a lot of literature about his person around. Remember, this isn't a 'person I'd least like to meet' or anything asking for a rational or reasoned answer, but 'least likeable' which is more emotional - would your average Chinese person really have Cao Cao or ol' Khan as their least liked person?
