You're underneath the bleachers of what was once a stadium in the town of Djelfa, in a fetid nest of soda bottles and candy wrappers. Somewhere in the distance, you hear the bark of small arms fire. In your duffel bag, next to changes of clothes, spare magazines for your SVD, and canteens of water, you have more than enough money in euros to let you restart your life anywhere else in the world, far from Algeria, far from the war that has torn this once peaceful country apart. You just have to survive to spend it is all. One million euros, divided between your stolen car and the duffel bag made you quite a valuable target. It was meant to be ransom money. You have to wonder who was valuable enough to warrant a million euros. Nowadays, life was cheap around here.Just as you see a growing speck on the horizon, your phone goes off. Quick check of it. Rachim's number. You answer."You're at the stadium?" Rachim. No noise. He wouldn't be in the helicopter then. Doesn't make you confident."Waiting.""Okay. Yeah, I, uh, they're saying they're having trouble spotting you?""I'm in a city at war. Visibility would be ill advised," You put away your binoculars. Helicopter definitely. You're guessing an Mi-8. Coming in fast- no fire from the government lines, but some small arms fire from Maliki's militia in town."Well, there's no one near the stadium, they'd rather you be out in the open.""I'd rather not be shot.""Look, they're worried is all-""About what? I can't fly a helicopter.""Just come out in the open to calm them down?"The helicopter is bearing in at speed. They must have a time table. Or not be fond of bullets. Can't blame them. Still, surprising they brought out a helicopter. >[ ] "Fine, fine. I'm coming out." Heft your things, walk out in the stadium. Let them see you.>[ ] "Let them land first." Or are you fa/tg/uys just brimming with all knowledge about everything?I still can't get over the "grab a bottle of vinegar" trick. I had no idea what was going on.
"Let them land first."Rachim takes on a pleading tone. He insists that you're being unreasonable. He brings up old times. He mentions that they're risking their lives for you, it's only fair, how you're being mean. You wait. Watch that helicopter grow larger and larger. It passes over the school down the street. Sure enough, you glimpse some tracer fire fly up at the helicopter. It banks away instinctively, but then you see a response in kind roar from the side of the helicopter. Machine gun. These men weren't unarmed. The helicopter is painted up like an Algerian air force helicopter, but you doubt Rachim would be working for the government. Aside from that, the thing looks TOO weather beaten. Your gut tells you that it wasn't by mistake.Still, an unwise move on their part. Whatever members of Maliki's group were there would follow now to the stadium. As nice as their PKMs might be, there was only so much they could do against numbers. Maybe that was calculated on their part, to help convince you to act faster. Rachim goes silent. You guess that the moment they pulled the trigger, they decided they couldn't stop.
You set aside your binoculars, heft your rifle. The helicopter comes in for a landing. Wind, dust and dirt whip around you, but you keep yourself settled and the sights steady. The doors are open on the thing. Not a lot of guys there, only seven. They land on the opposite side of the field, between you and your car. They hop out of the helicopter, with German looking rifles and shiny armor. Heckler and Koch G3s, if you're right, though a little hard to tell with all the shiny attachments on them.Seven men, body armor, balaclavas, helmets. Sonatrach emblems on them. But not uniformly applied. Six form a phalanx, rifles out, covering the field. One stays on the PKM.Eighth man comes out, hand to his ear. Makes sure to stay at the core of the phalanx. Turtleneck. Jacket. Scarf. Pale thinning hair, and glasses. "He wants to know where you are," Rachim breaks the silence. Eighth man must be keeping him abreast of the situation. And you think he's lying. Or very lucky about keeping your side of the field covered.About a 100 meters between you and them. You're not comfortable with your odds if you start a shooting match. They could put a lot more bullets in the air than you could. And, you can't fly a helicopter. But maybe one of Maliki's men could.>[ ] "Tell him I'm in the bleachers.">[ ] "Tell his men to drop their weapons, and I'll come out.">[ ] "Tell him I'm coming," Walk out. Keep rifle up. "Left side," You say to Rachim, "Nearer to them.""Okay."The eighth man raises an eyebrow at that. He glances to the left, taps the soldier in front of him on the shoulder. Man looks up, scans that side with his rifle. Turns back. More quiet words exchanged. The eighth man chuckles, talks to the air."Ah, well, he says- he says he doesn't see you there.""My heart bleeds.""Please," He says what he thinks your name is, "Don't do this. We don't have much time. You are risking their lives-""What does the helicopter ride cost me?""Well-""Rachim, we don't have much time.""Okay, okay, I'll ask." The eighth man looks away from you pointedly, glances about. Scratches his ear, talks to the air. He leans away for a moment, as if he heard something loud. Shrugs. Shouts to the air."One hundred thousand!" He pulled that number from thin air. One hundred thousand was a lot. He and his men didn't look poor. Not poor enough to be shaking down random warlords for ransom money. Seven men, and a machine gun. If you had enough range-You glance behind you. The bleachers had gaps. If you wanted to escape, or take another position, you could try. And what of Maliki's men? They'd get courage enough to come to the stadium eventually. Delay Rachim's friends long enough, you could take advantage of the confusion. Or maybe one shouldn't turn down charity. "Fifty thousand.""What? Are you mad?""Fifty thousand," You glance back to the helicopter. The eighth man is looking increasingly agitated. "Maliki's men are coming-" Rachim hisses."I've got bills to pay.""You ARE insane.""Rachim," You look up, "Are you relating everything? Or does the man hear what I say?"Silence."He, he doesn't speak Arabic.""What is he? German?" Based purely off of the G3s."What, well, I, I don't know, he speaks to me in English-""And you can translate that?""Well, yes-""Don't relate this part," You look down the scope. They're agitated. The eighth man taps a soldier on the shoulder, jerks his head back to your car. The man stands, dashes over to the car, "Do they intend to kill me? Take my money?""They really don't need the money.""Then why are they here?" "Because I asked them to be here."Rachim is your friend. You saved his life once, back in Constantine. You grew up together. When Aghali left him to the DRS, Algeria's internal security, you got him out. It wouldn't be impossible that Rachim felt grateful to you. But, what could one Algerian mechanic offer westerners that they would listen to him?"Please. Don't make things worse," Rachim whispers. When you get on that helicopter, you knew that you'd be surrounded. It would take a miracle to get out if they decided to take the rest of your money, and throw you out. Rachim might not even know. A 'stray bullet' could take you out. Rachim seemed to trust them though. "There's things I would do with this money-""For God's sake!""Fifty thousand, Rachim!" "Maliki's men are two blocks away, I see three technicals, at least a dozen men-""Fifty thousand." Rachim curses you. Then you see the eighth man in the distance frown. He looks up, around. Nods. You nod. Drum your fingers on the wood of the Dragunov. Get your courage up. Walking towards six guns pointed your way while carrying this much money was no mean feat. "Okay. Let them know I'm coming.""You are one of the most thick headed-""Stay safe Rachim."You hang up. Nothing else to do.Your hand is shaking as you put the phone away. When your hand comes up again, it's as still as stone. If you die, you die. No more point in fearing fate. God willing, you'd live. Rachim was your friend. He would not forget what you had done for him, all those years ago in Constantine. You sling the rifle on your back, unbuckle your CZ's holster (Not much chance of the bullets penetrating their armor, but the eighth man was unarmored. At the very least, you could kill him.), heft the duffel bag, and hobble. They are the longest 100 meters of your life. The formed up men star at you, uncaring as you stagger out from under the bleachers and approach. The grass is overlong- hadn't been mowed a long while. It is slick and wet with moisture and frost. Your sprain being dragged along doesn't help. They don't shoot you on sight. Did they want to save the time to drag the duffel over? Thought you had it hidden somewhere? You glance around. Forces of Maliki's were coming. Rachim had to have told them. You're flattered you still have six men pointing at you.Twenty meters out, man in the front shouts something short, raises a hand. Palm open to you. Pale faced man, blue eyes, blonde hair too long, comes down in his eyes a bit. Soft man. Soft man with a large gun and steady aim. Looked like a Swede you had met in Tunis. The man who may or may not be Swedish approaches, rifle set in his shoulder.
"Don't we have somewhere to be?" You ask in Arabic. No reason to advertise you know (some) English yet. Blue eyes glances at you, but do nothing else as he approaches. Man that went to your car comes back around the helicopter, a plastic bag in fist. The rest of the money, you wager. Your money. You look past the man approaching to the Eighth Man. He's looking in the bag that the man he'd sent back to the car had brought. He lifts up some euros, paws through them, drops it back in. He nods, jerks his head. Man and plastic bag go in the helicopter. Twin rotors start up. Eighth Man stays outside though. Blue eyed man approaches you, takes a hand off the barrel of his rifle. He's mostly between you and the rest of the band. He waves his hands at you. Seems to indicate you need to drop your weapons."Do you speak English?" Eighth Man asks. He talks slowly. You don't know enough about their language to place the accent. You're not an expert in the language, but you know enough. The blue eyed man again indicates you should disarm, pointing forcefully at your rifle. Maybe he doesn't see your pistol? A patdown would spot it quickly though.Twofer.>[ ] Drop weapons.>[ ] Drop rifle only.>[ ] Drop nothing.Then.>[ ] "Yes." In English.>[ ] "Very little." "Very little," You say, holding up a hand to Blue Eyes in front of you. You lift the jacket very slowly, showing the pistol- you slowly reach for it, but Blue Eyes snatches it first. "Markus, don't be rude," the Eighth Man chides. The rotors are in full speed now, and the Eighth Man shouts over the noise. Markus glances back, with clear irritation before looking at your CZ with quick interest. He flicks at the safety a few times, before jamming it in his belt. You bite back a bit of irritation. You liked that gun, damn it. You take off the Dragunov, start trying to unload it, but Markus lifts his rifle belatedly, and you forget about it. You raise your hand from it gingerly. The Eighth Man taps another on the shoulder, nodding over to you. Another man leaves the formation, taking the Dragunov from you. You're disarmed. Leaving you your duffel bag. You stand there, uncomfortably. Your boot knife is still in your boot. But you doubt you could reach it. Besides, up close and personal was most definitely not your style. Eighth Man nods, approaches, smiling. Not a care in the world. Very confident in his men. He waves to his soldiers- Markus stays, but the others load up on the helicopter, looking out to the town. You've still got your father's rifle in your car. "Finally reasonable! I did not catch your name-""Don't care," You glance to the man on the helicopter, plastic bag of money still in his fist, "Fifty thousand, you said.""I did say that, didn't I!" He shouts, smiling, "You're very privileged, you know that? Not often that somebody would be willing to settle for a mere fifty thousand euros for a hostile extraction.""Sure. Do I go on, or not?"The Eighth Man smiles. Gives a tip of his hand to Markus. Markus yanks his G3 up, puts it to your head. The cold barrel on is on your temple. The Eighth Man keeps your gaze. You stay staring at the man. The gun barrel is cold against your temple, and it's hard to keep your eyes open in the wind and dust, but you resolve that if nothing else, you will not blink. Let him shoot you. You won't blink first. The fact that he let you get this close was no great indication- sometimes men are cruel, or stupid. But whether or not he would shoot you would be uninfluenced by your actions. He'd already made his decision. You stay staring at his glasses. You stay like that, for what must have been twenty seconds. The time passes by quickly. He's the first to blink. His eyes wrinkle behind his glasses. He nods."Not afraid then?" The shouting dampens it, but you can hear the good humor on his voice. You don't respond. You feel Markus jab the gun barrel in the side of your head. That hurts. "Answer him!""He already has, Markus," The old man nods, "Right then. Keep your money. I lose more daily to rounding errors. Rachim spoke highly of you-""Am I flying out or not?" The old man raises an eyebrow. Waves his hand to Markus. The gun is removed from your head."Very well. By the way-" The old man clambers in, you following him, "Interesting bit of business in your car. That press pass. We'll take you out of the city. We talk, then you can hear me out or not. After that, you can go on with your important business of...Whatever it is you do."You don't respond. Just follow him on board. Shouting, strapping in, and men standing on guns. You keep your duffel bag in your lap, and glare at Markus. Your CZ was still in his belt. And, you reflect as you fly up and away from the reporter's car, your father's Garand was still in there. You shake your head. Nothing could be done about that. You hear bullets ricochet off of your craft, but true to his promise, you fly up and over Djelfa, buildings and lives small from the air. The old man is talking to the air still. Apparently to people in charge of flight plans, judging from what you can hear.
You entertain the notion for a moment of trying something, but Markus is watching you like a hawk, finger not far from the G3's trigger. Out of the frying pan. Soon you're north. No sign of stopping though- you head out over the mountains, through cold gusts of air and flurries of snow, and in to the desert. No much warmer than the mountains. You guess that it's about two in the afternoon when you finally land. You don't see anything at first- not near any of the main roads. Just some gravelly trails. Then you start to make out unmistakable shapes- shining antenna, boxy looking rocks, errant camouflage covering- a camp then. A rather discreet camp at that. Not even any smoke rising from it. The helicopter lands to the side, and immediately people start hustling out. You're going to stand when Markus tugs at you, dragging you halfway out. The old man waits last, sharing a final exchange before stepping out in the camouflaged encampment. As soon as you're all off the helicopter lifts off again, heading south. You glance a question at the old man."We were borrowing it," He explains, tugging at his scarf, "Hungry? Thirsty? Your friend Rachim is here, by the way, if you want to see him," He points to a large dusty and covered semi, "Just in there. You haven't seen each other in quite some time, right? But, I suspect you want your freedom as well. Very important things, with your money- oh! Albert!" He waves to the man with the plastic bag, "Do return our guest's possessions, would you?"Albert with some grudging pushes the bag in to you. Then walks further in to the camp. "Thank you," You nod. Heft your duffel bag over your shoulder. You look at the plastic bag. Garbage bag, filled with more euros. You look up, and see the old man is going to the edge of the camp, beneath a lone and gnarled tree. Strange fellow. It feels unnatural to be a millionaire, and just walking around with it. There are men here- most of whom were foreigners. All of them armed. It's not terribly crowded, and most people want to stay inside. Still, there are enough wandering that it puts you on edge. And being unarmed doesn't help. You go down on a knee to tie your laces, but slip the knife up and out of your boot in to your coat. Better to have it close at hand and not need it than the opposite. There's a big man with an M4, knotted beard, sunglasses and base ball cap in front of the rear door of the semi. He raises an eyebrow, and then pounds on the back door, shouting something that you don't understand. Had a lot of rolling syllables. The truck opens, and Rachim pokes his head cautiously out. He brightens at the sight of you. The years had been kind of Rachim- still the eternally tired look, and the bent nose, but his face had cleared up, he finally started shaving properly instead of letting the patchy mess grow out, and it appeared the pox scarring had mostly receded. He jumps out, still looking emaciatedl, wearing flip flops, khakis and a polo. Small and ordinary. A strange contrast to the large man with the rifle next to him."Good to see you, by God, listen, I don't have much tim-""What have you gotten yourself in to Rachim?" You glance at the guard, then nod in to the truck, "Are you alone in there?""Eh? Ah, not exactly, there's a man, Thomas in there right now-""Does he speak Arabic?""No.""Good, let's talk in there."You clamber in to the truck. >>28693278We should speak French as well, considering we're Algerian. Big question is if Rachim's guys will let us keep the cash.
>>28693278Hell, why get ourselves a little house in Turkey or Oman, be done with the excitement. Or at least that should be our goal. Somehow, I figure we are going to be behind a gun the entire time we place this character. So, short term goal had ought to be weapon and transportation procurement. In that order.
>>28693459French would really open us up to a lot more places - and we already have two of the big ones under our belt in the form of English and Arabic. If we picked up Mandarin and Spanish on top of those, the world would be our oyster.>>28693834It's safer to be behind a gun than in front of one.
>>28693834>>28693278so i'm the only one that wants to blow our money.
>>28693871I haven't commented on the money yet, but yes. We need to secure passage, two separate sets of identification papers of actual good grade (one for backup) and at least one safehouse with backup gear and a small cache of saved cash in case shit hits the fan.Between all of those expenses, we'll be lucky to still be paying the bills once we're settled somewhere. Being a gun for hire (or other properly professional criminals) pays great (when it pays) but also incurs big expenses. Personally, I would be interested getting involved with some heists once we're in Europe. We've got the brains and discretion for it, and every crew needs a good gunman.
>>28693865>Spanishwhich type of spanish. There are differences and phrases that mean something else.(a large chunk of it is still usable every where though)I would like for us to learn these 4 languages. We are guaranteed Arabic and french, and some English but i would like for us to learn.SpanishMandarinPortugueseRussianwith these we could travel where ever we wanted in the world.
>>28693912Well i was hoping to get us medically checked out completely, then buy ourselves some Armour, a safe house, rainy day/oh shit money, a couple different passports, weapons, and utility.i was gonna say buy an oil rig and start our own PMC
>>28693940>PortugueseOutside of Brazil, there's not much of a point. I agree with Russian, though. Anyway, I don't really care about him sounding like a native speaker of Spanish since there's almost no chance he'll be able to pass himself off as a Spaniard or Latino, I just want him to be able to communicate with the Latin world. Actually, considering how close we are to Morocco, there's a chance we might know some Spanish.Anyway, we definitely know Arabic and some English. We probably know French, since we're a fairly intelligent and worldly person from Algeria, we just haven't had it confirmed yet. There's a chance we might know some Spanish, since we're from NW Africa. We want to learn Russian and Mandarin.Right?>>28693981The medical checkup will be, all things considered, a negligible expense compared to the other stuff. But the transit across the Mediterranean itself, the multiple sets of identification papers, the rainy day fund, and the safehouse should knock out the majority of our money. Weapons and armor are usually sourced by a contractor prior to a contract, so we only need to worry about keeping our current weapons for now. Armor is useful, but only to a certain extent. Once we're out of a warzone we don't want anything too overt, and that's expensive as hell.A million euros isn't even a downpayment on starting a PMC, and we can't afford the level of scrutiny that would bring. We're a war criminal and soon an illegal refugee.
>>28693981We could always join the French Foreign Legion, and then start up a PMC with fellow legionnaires after our term of service is up. Also, soldiers we've served with would be less likely to shoot us in the head and take our money.
>>28694047>French Foreign LegionNow THAT could be something. Still, we're a war criminal and a mercenary for rebel militias. While that could provide us sufficient legitimacy to make our past largely disappear, we have to be careful about the scrutiny we draw from those in power.
>>28694039>Outside of Brazil, there's not much of a point.well a good chunk of south america has Portuguese and that is why i picked it since with it and Spanish we basically can go anywhere on the western hemisphere. Also yeah russian and mandarin are go for me.
>>28694066Well then, I suppose the question is whether or not we've kicked up enough fuss internationally to be on Interpol (or some equivalent's) watch list.It doesn't seem like it, since we've just mainly been some random warlord's mook, but I suppose it's always a possibility
>>28694137We'll see once we can get a reliable internet connection, yeah?
>>28694161Yeah, let's focus on the more immediate subjects. So, we're going to do business with the guys Rachim are with, right? They seem like the people with the resources to get us out of here. We'll probably have to do some jobs, but we'll probably get a safehouse and some sweet #tacticool #swag.
>>28694297I'd rather not do business with these guys, since they don't seem like the people you want to owe favours to. But if we don't have a choice, they're as good as anybody else with money
>>28694039>We're a war criminal and soon an illegal refugeeAre we that well known? Also true, that is mainly put the PMC part in spoilers, but if you want to talk then there is thishttp://www.privateislandsonline.com/islands?development=&type=&forsale_start=1&forsale_end=5&set=true&Currency=true&search-currency=USDThe ones below are a bit expensive and should be used if we get a good bussiness runninghttp://www.hardenedstructures.com/island-fortresses.phphttp://www.hardenedstructures.com/fortified-and-hardened-homes.phphttp://www.hardenedstructures.com/military.php
>>28694326We will be that well known if we run a PMC, and that kind of attention brings people trying to dig up your skeletons.
>>28694339Also, while a professional, we don't exactly seem like the leader sort. We're probably better off becoming some kind of highly professional assassin/career criminal.
>>28694378We're not even a real professional at hit&run tactics either. We flipped shit when our man died, then killed the random citizens checking us out.THEN we called someone on a smartphone to pick up a baby. Two really unprofessional choices that showed that our character was really freaked out by losing a man. I mean, CPR doesn't even work if there are holes all over the body to leak the blood you're trying to pump.
>>28694435That's another thing that we need but don't have. First aid training.
>>28694591That'd be nice, but bullet wounds are waaay past first aid.All we could do once he went into shock was to lift the legs, plug the holes (not happening), and get him a blood transfusion. We could go in for EMS training, but then we'd have to lug around weird junk everywhere.
>>28694950>That'd be nice, but bullet wounds are waaay past first aid.Yeah, but that sprained ankle we've been hobbling around on isn't.
>>28695000Oh yeah.Yeah, that'd be good to have then. I'd say more useful than learning languages right now.
>>28695068Sprains take time to heal. Time we don't have, assuming we want out of Algeria via the Sicilian.
>Twen writing a quest that breaks all the QTG rules. Is that true?
>>28697831Explain what are you asking exactly?
>>28698290Somebody on the qtg irc has the theory that this quest is Twen's experiment at trying to see if he can succeed at a quest that doesn't follow any of the typical quest rules. I personally don't put any stock in it.
>>28698616point taken, but what rules is it breaking?
>>28698678No waifus, no fanfiction, erratic schedule, non white protag that's hard to relate to? I don't really know. Just speculating on my part. I would ask the qtg irc, but... Well, you know.
>>28698862>implying an Algerian mercenary is hard to relate to>my camo when
>>28700944We need to form outer heaven now.
>>28701339>>28700944Its actually cheaper to buy an island than an oil rig.
>>28704030what's that picture?
>>28705990file name.
>>28706171Oh. Hard to figure out.
>>28707519it becomes somewhat obvious once you notice the Metal gear rex.
