I have escaped the Sandman's Dark Prison

You make your way to the infirmary for something to reduce the swelling caused by your companions prodigious sword swing. There you find the large cleric from before, just as large and improperly layered as always. He sees you rubbing the back of your head and assumes correctly about what you need, handing you a cold pack from a metal chest on the floor. You tell him about the incident with Anna and he laughs, warning you about dropping your guard around girls like her. He also says something about the Sunrise Festival, held on the longest day of the year, wherein the townsfolk are invited to a lovely event with the church. He explains that there will be food and dancing, but also that some of the shy brothers and sisters often find occasion to go out for field training instead of suffering through such sappy events. You briefly consider going.

After you return the cold pack, you have the afternoon to yourself. Do you:

A) Get more training in

After a lot of thought, you decide to go and find Anna in town. You leave through the cathedral, where some townsfolk are praying, likely for good luck and crops. You don't have much to go on as to where Anna might be, so looking in one place is as good as any. Do you:

A) Search the textile shop. She was there once, maybe she's there again
B) Ask around town for her. You really should find her.

You head over to one of the flower shops in town, just to peruse the selection that's come out this summer. While you are doing this, you hear a commotion from down the street. You look over and see a group of young men harassing a shop owner for some reason, shouting and laughing while knocking things off of his stand. You take it upon yourself to intervene, commanding them to cease this foolish roughhousing, or you'll be forced to act. The leader, who's authority is shown by his confident posture, approaches you and tells you to mind your own business, and that this shop is charging outrageous prices. You see the tags that the owner has placed on his wears, and everything seems quite reasonable. You should stop these men from causing too much harm, will you:

A) Draw your knife, and let them know how serious you are
B) Order them to leave or receive a pummeling
C) Try to speak calmly, and convince them to go in peace

You try to speak sense into these boys, stating that they'll only cause trouble for themselves by continuing this reckless behavior. Some of them seem to consider it, but there leader moves even closer and accuses you of being a coward, saying you probably joined the church so you could hide behind the Palace walls. It's clear that he's not going to back down. He grabs a hold of your shirt collar, and it dawns on you that you don't have your chainmail on at the moment, because you were wearing training pads earlier. He makes more accusations, and you feel his hot and cheese stinking breath on your face. One of his cohorts seems to be approaching as well, with something clutched in his hand. Will you:

A) Shove this one off of you and ask them one last time to be calm
B) Twist the arm of the one in your face, and show the others you aren't kidding
C) Bash the both of them good, and warn the others to scatter
D) Challenge all of them and make sure they never harass peaceful folks again

You take the arm of the one nearest you, and twist it around his back, with your elbow hooked under his chin. He cries in pain, and the other men seem to stop. Now they're listening intently. The leader speaks in between grunts of pain, saying that you'd better break his arm if you want to get out of this with all your teeth intact. The second one, only a few feet away, hesitates for a moment. Now you can make out that he has a chunk of jagged brick in his hand. The leader continues to struggle to get out of your hold, will you:

A) Dislocate his arm, he asked for it
B) Shove him to the ground, hurting him would only be wasting some doctor's time
C) Cut off his air, and let the others watch him crumple like paper

You give his arm one last twist and push him to the floor. He sits there, rubbing his shoulder, while you tell the lot of them to leave before you get mad. They pick him up and walk him away. You apologize to the shop owner for the trouble, and he thanks you for your help. As thanks he gives you a gift of free wine. It's just cheap stuff, but you thank him all the same, and help him put his stand back in order before going on your way.

Later, when you're tired of walking, you head home. In the cathedral, the bishop is speaking to the head inquisitor. They both greet you, and continue talking. Do you:

You stick around to hear what they're talking about. It seems there's trouble in a city a few days ride from here; members of the church have gone missing while helping the people recover from a terrible fire. The head plans on dispatching a few men to investigate, and is asking the bishop for approval of the operation. They turn to see you still standing around, and the head asks if there's something wrong. Do you:

A) Say nothing is wrong, and go about your business

You ask for more information on the operation, and the head provides. It seems that some brothers and sisters went to this town to help with relief after a fire, caused by a lightning storm, broke out. It burned a great deal of their harvestable fields, and destroyed several homes and buildings. Three clerics, and two paladins were sent to deliver food, clothing, and supplies to them. They were supposed to return a week ago, but with no word back on their situation, they must be presumed captured, or dead. There is no word of violent aggressors in that area, so in all likelihood they simply got stuck on the way to or from the town. The bishop doesn't believe there is any danger, but the head doesn't want to risk it.

The head tells you that rain gear may be a good idea, as the area is known for heavy showers in the summer, but other than that everything will be provided.

You ask to bring someone along, but the head says no. He only wants people on this mission who need to be. You persuade him by saying that in any scenario, this operation would be easier with more hands to help. You aren't trying to be stealthy, only quick, and with horses that will be no problem. The head sees the wisdom in your words and allows you to bring one person of your choosing, but you must choose now so that he can update the records. You choose:

A) Andre
B) Anna
C) Diane
D) Leman Russ
E) Try to talk him into allowing 2 others

You head toward the eight room, where the paladins train in solitude. Now and then inquisitors join, but there are rarely clerics in here. All around the room paladins train with iron weights and heavy practice weapons. You aren't anywhere near the best of them in terms of size and strength, since you mostly focus on agility training, but you feel welcome here. The paladins are especially generous with their friendship, offering to spot you and giving you helpful advice. Thanks to them, you've toned your glutes and shoulders to the point of pride.

As you shadow box with some small iron rods, a large, dark skinned paladin comes over to return his weights to the rack. He greets you, and tells you to widen your stance, as someone could easily knock you over from the side if you aren't looking. You thank him and ask for his name. He is Scipio, a proud brother of the church for nearly 4 years. You get to talking, and find out that he is the one who will be joining you on your mission in a few days. You work out together for a while, and become fast friends. As you are leaving, he wishes you well and says he'll see you on the day of departure. You head off to bed.

The next morning and prayer pass. You still haven't seen Anna since she bashed you in the head. You have the whole day to yourself, and you decide to:

He challenges you to exceed your previous maximums, and with his help you push your limits incredibly. You also help him with his normal routine, which apparently involves tossing weights the size children around the room. After you finish, you have dinner and split up. You make your way to the clerics' study to recite some verses. Upon entering, several of the clerics there turn there noses away at you. You sniff yourself and realize that you are very pungent. Still, nobody will smell you in the back, so you grab the book you need and head toward the less populated part of the study. As you turn the corner of a bookshelf, you see Leman Russ in the distance, curled up by a desk. You also notice that at that desk is an old, grey haired woman in cleric robes, sitting next to Anna. They seem to be reciting verses as well, from the sound of it. Do you:

You decide to let them study in peace, and find somewhere else to sit and read. You review the verses quietly to yourself, so as not to alert Anna or Leman Russ to your presence in the study. It's getting easier to read them on your own now. On the 25th page, you get stuck on a particularly hard passage and decide to call it a night. You put up the book and go to the baths, for a quick rinse before bed. The hot water is relaxing, and you meet up with Andre just as he's leaving. You chat and tell him about the trip tomorrow. He says he requested to go as well, but the head denied him, convinced that Andre is useless without his sister. After your bath, you dry off and make your way to bed, but as you pass through the halls you bump into Anna again. She stop you in the middle of the hall and looks you seriously in the eye.

"I want to ask you something important. I've been practicing hard for more than a year now, and I've even found a cleric who is teaching me to read verse. But I want to know what you think. Should I join the church? Do you think I have what it takes?"

You respond with your assumed age. She seems surprised by your answer, but stays quiet. After a moment she agrees to think more about what she'll do, and says goodnight. She turns to leave, but you recall that you need Leman Russ for the trip tomorrow, so you inform her that the two of you will be gone for a week or so. She asks what for, but you tell her that you can't share information about the mission, on orders from the head inquisitor. She pouts, but acknowledges your reason and marches off. You rub your face, feeling the smoothness of a clean shave under your fingers, before you turn and walk to the men's chambers. That night, you wake in the black of night, in a cold sweat. Your heart is pounding, but you aren't sure why. You assume you had a nightmare, but you have no recollection. After that, sleep is easy.

You wake the next morning an hour before prayer. You don your mail, and your other gear, then head over to the women's chambers. An older woman answers the door and allows you to peek in and whistle for Leman Russ. With the brief glance in the dark you get, you notice that the women's chambers smell much nicer, and appear to have much larger beds. This annoys you, as you've spent the last year trying not to roll out of bed on hot nights. Leman Russ comes when you call, and the two of you head toward the Palace gates. There, astride horses, are Scipio and two inquisitors in full regalia. You mount your own horse, a chestnut mare, and the four of you ride off toward the wall. As the sun rises over the mountains, you all take turns speaking part of the prayer. Leman Russ has a slight bit of trouble keeping paces with the horses, which forces you to slow to a trot. By the time the morning bells ring, you are out of the city and on your way.

Continued in a minute, running out of space...

We should probably ask if we guessed her age correctly.

After a long morning, you stop to feed the horses and stretch. This is the longest you've ever been on a horse without stopping, and it's already begun to make your legs sore. Leman Russ pants heavily, and you give him some water to cool off. The other inquisitors imply that you should have left him behind, he'll only slow you all down. You reply:

A) He's like a brother to me. I don't care if we have to crawl, I won't leave him behind.
B) Maybe, but there's no point whining about it now

They seem to scoff at you. Once everyone is rested, you climb back in the saddle and get moving again. The next 3 days go by with little of interest. You speak to Scipio now and then, just making small talk and sharing rations. The other inquisitors seem irritated at this assignment, and make it quite difficult to keep up a conversation. Finally, on the third day, you crest a hill and spot your destination. It's a small town, probably holding no more than a thousand at maximum, though it could be q good deal less, as evidenced by the blackened fields and building around the area. The inquisitors ride ahead, leaving you, Scipio, and Russ behind. It isn't for another hour that you reach the fields, long swaths of which are burned black and bare. You can see why they'd need food, if they lost this much in the fire. After more time, you get to the town limits. You stop when you hear a strange noise. Scipio asks what the matter is and you tell him to listen carefully. The noise resembles chanting, and is emanating from somewhere in the town. There are no people in sight, but you do see light smoke drifting from the center of the town. You bring your horses around, and trot over. When you turn a corner, you witness a large crowd of people gathered, chanting something near a bonfire. Do you:

A) Approach and ask what is happening
B) Try to watch without raising alarm
C) Try and back away quietly

The people in the square continue to chant and circle the bonfire. Eventually, some of them drag something up to it's base, wrapped in a large sack and toss it onto the burning embers. They repeat this a second time in a few minutes, and continue chanting. Eventually, a man in red robes steps up onto a box platform and rises his hands to silence the people. He waits for complete quiet, and then speaks, "All of you have worked so hard, and your reward is nearly within reach. Our prayers have been answered, and the sun shall shine once more on our poor town. No longer will we be plagued by lightning and thunder! all we must do is have faith, and we shall be prosperous!"

The people cheer and clap, creating a terrible ruckus that spooks the horses. At this point the people of the town notice you, and the man in red robes speaks again, "Brothers! We welcome you to our humble town! Come, feel the warmth of the fire!"

You remain silent, and feel the eyes of the townspeople on you, scanning you. The man in red robes continues to smile and hold his arms out toward you and Scipio. When he sees that you aren't going to make any moves, he steps down from his box platform and approaches you himself. He stops a few yards from your horse and smiles. Leman Russ is on the verge of barking, but he seems to be waiting for you to act, or give him an order. The man in red robes speaks again, "Brothers, do not be afraid. We are merely holding tribute as thanks for a divine blessing. Our fields and homes were struck with lightning in an awful storm, but we have been redeemed and given a second chance. Step down from your mounts and join us in celebration!"

You look him over. He seems ordinary enough. The only thing that stands out to you is a mark on his palms that you can catch a glimpse of when he gestures. Do you:

You dismount your horse, and Scipio follows your example. The man in red robes places a hand on your shoulder and leads you over to his box platform, as the crowd opens up for you to pass. Nobody says a word as you pass, and you notice that they seem to be angry with you. As you draw near the bonfire, you feel its intense heat buffeting you. The man in red robes begins speaking to the crowd, praising you for coming in their hour of dire need, a gift from the Father of Light himself. You peer into the base of the great flames, and see something oddly shaped within. Terror dawns on you, as you realize it is a symbol of the sun, turning red hot in the fire. Scipio and Russ seem uneasy, but have not notived what you have. You:

A) Tell the man in robes to take his hands off of you
B) Stay quiet and wait, maybe there's an explanation
C) Nod to Scipio that something is afoot

Suddenly you are shoved into the bonfire backwards, flailing your arms wildly to try and redirect yourself. You land in the flames, but manage to roll out and begin patting yourself and rolling to extinguish the flames. You look over and see the people of the town swarming Scipio and Russ. Before Russ can swing his sword, they arrest him and disarm him, and also begin kicking Russ. Russ fights back valiantly, all the while trying to make his way over to you, but he is constantly denied movement by the crowd. You see Scipio beaten over the head with stones, and they begin stripping him of his armor. You put out the flames burning your robes and try to get to your feet, but hands begin to wrap around you and force you to your knees. The man in red robes reaches into the bonfire, unharmed by its intense heat, and pulls out the red symbol of the sun, then begins walking toward you while mumbling something in a language you don't understand. Russ keep trying to get to you, as he is kicked and hit with rocks from all angles. He looks to you with fear in his wide eyes, you cry out:

You order Leman Russ to flee, and save himself. He hesitates, wanting desperately to come to you, but after a swift kick to the side he back away and squeezes out the other side of the crowd. The man in red robes orders the townspeople to let him go, as he stops in front of you. Several hands come from the crowd holding you down, tearing open your robes and lifting up your mail to reveal your bare torso. They put you on your hands and knees and hold you down. You hear the man in robes mumbling more nonsense, and then hear his voice very near your ear.

"You will be the savior of this town. Rejoice in your holy destiny. This mark I give you will brand you a heretic to the true god, the god of black fire and storms. The Father of Light will die in his golden throne, and you will be the instrument of his demise."

You feel a searing pain run up your back, as something burns your bare skin. It stays there for only a moment, but it feels like an eternity. Tears form in your eyes as you scream in agony. You cry out again, and receive a boot to the side of your head. As you gasp for air, the sounds around you begin to grow muffled and hard to understand. You look up and see them carrying away Scipio, as he struggles against heavy iron chains. Another boot stomps your head into the dirt. Finally, you feel a third burning pain in your back, and cannot resist any longer. you allow yourself to drift into unconsciousness.

You open your eyes to see a vast and verdant field of blooming sunflowers. Above you is the noon sun, warm and bright. The pain from earlier is gone, and your robes and mail are back as when you left the city. You begin walking forward, without any destination. Every direction is more sunflowers, with nothing else in sight. The smell of them is soothing, and their color fills you with joy. As you walk, you spy a figure in the distance. It seems to be sitting among the flowers, unaware of you. You approach it and reach out your hand, desperate to see who it is. You make a guess and call out:

You get on all fours and slowly make your way to Scipio. You tell him to keep talking, and tell you everything that's happened since the square. The stone floor hurts your knees, and moving too much sends pain through your back. Scipio informs you after they jumped on you, they stripped him of his armor and beat him until he was dizzy. The man in red robes branded you with the holy symbol from the bonfire, and you kept screaming. Russ turned tail and ran back the way you came. After that, they knocked him out and must have brought him down here and chained him while he was out. He doesn't quite know how long it's been, but his stomach has been growling for what seems like forever, and he's fallen asleep out of boredom at least 10 times.

You find your way to him, placing a hand on his face. You then lay on your stomach, to relax your back pain. Scipio says to get comfortable, because they haven't come down to check on you yet, and he hasn't even heard any noise besides you and the rats. You close your eyes, but see no difference in vision. You turn toward him and say:

You speak calmly and assure him that this won't be the end for either of you. He laughs and agrees heartily, followed by several painful coughs. You ask if he's able to cast magic, but responds telling you that even if he knew any, he couldn't without a symbol or his hands free. You concur, and try to think of another plan. It occurs to you that while you do not have a holy symbol handy, you may have something that will work. You suggest trying to channel through the brands on your back, but Scipio isn't sure. You focus your mind on the verses, and try to channel the power of the Father of Light. You continue for a long while. Scipio tells you to stop, and that if it hasn't worked by now, it won't. You keep trying however, and eventually you feel a warmth building up inside your stomach. The brands on your back glow orange, and illuminate a part of the room. Scipio exclaims that he's seen that kind of spell before.

"I've seen some of the paladins use that in battles. It gives you great strength, but from what I hear it's pretty hard to do."

You bring yourself to your knees and move over to Scipio. When he asks what you're trying to do, you simply tell him to trust you, and place your hands on the chains binding him to the wall. You focus your mind again and begin tugging on them. After a minute of intense concentration, your back brands glow again, and you pull apart Scipio's chains. You are both free to move now, but still have the chains that bound you dangling from your wrists. Scipio pats you on the shoulder in thanks, which sends you to the floor. He half closes the door, but continues to scan the room outside. At some point he looks down to see you, and is taken aback. "When's the last time you shaved?" You say that you shaved the night before leaving town. "You've nearly got a full beard."

You reach up to feel your cheeks and sure enough, your face is covered in thick hair. You've never let it get this long. You didn't even know you could grow a beard this thick yet. You tell Scipio to keep a lookout while you try and get some rest. He agrees and you shut your eyes and try to make a pillow out of your arms. As tired as you are, the pain in your back makes it difficult to fall asleep. You force yourself to hold still and forget about the old and hard floor, and try to find something soothing to focus on. Your thought drift to your bed back home, as well as the beef stew served in the kitchen on cold days. You think about running your hands through Leman Russ' fur after he's been brushed. You think of laying in the garden during the sunset, when the breeze is cool and the earth is still warm. Your thoughts wander to Anna, Andre and Diane, who are there right now, waiting for you to come back. Andre is training in the garden, Diane is reciting verse, and Anna is probably playing with Leman Russ. The last image allows you to finally lose yourself, and drift off to sleep.

No dreams come to you this time, but you do awake feeling better than before. You don't hear any noise, and when you nudge Scipio he doesn't respond. You assume he must have fallen asleep sometime too. Do you:

With your restored energy, you dare to make a bold escape. Nothing will get in the way now. You reach over to Scipio and shake him hard until he stirs. There's no time to waste. He groans as he regains his wits, and seems to writhe around. When you ask what's wrong he sits up and replies, "I can barely move. I haven't eaten in so long. How can you feel fine? You slept for nearly 3 days after we got this door open!"

A) What? Don't be foolish, I'm barely hungry

You question Scipio's sanity, but he assures you it's the truth. You feel your cheeks and realize that your beard even thicker than before. You tell Scipio to stay there while you look around, for piece of mind. You crawl out of the door into a dimly light barn. There are no sounds besides a breeze outside. Around you are piles of hay and farm tools strewn about. In the light you see that your body has become very thin, and you smell awful. You go to the barn door and peek outside. The town is in view, and you seem to be able to make out people moving about. Then you spy something approaching you. It looks like a someone dressed in red, accompanied by two others. They'll be on you in a few minutes, and there's nowhere to hide if you get out of the barn, plus Scipio is in no condition to run. You need to get back down to the basement and defend Scipio where the fight will be on your terms. You run over to a pile of tools and grab:

A) A pitchfork

You grab the sickle and run for the cellar door. Back in the dark, Scipio coughs and groans. You tell him to say quiet, and warn him about what's about to happen. You shut the door and wait in silence. In a few minutes, you hear the barn doors creak open and voices enter the barn. You can' hear what they're saying well, but one of them mentions finishing the ritual. They approach the door, and you ready yourself for the fight. ONe of them checks the door and remarks to the others that the lock has been broken. There is silence for a second, before one of them throws the door open and peers inside. You waste no time, grabbing him by the shirt collar and dragging him down into the dark where you drag the blade of the sickle across his throat and bleed him. The second one jumps down, armed with a cleaver, but he is no match for you even in this emaciated state. you quickly disarm him and slash his stomach open. The man in red robes shouts for his men. You:

You waste not a moment as you climb out of the door, weapon drawn and ready to strike. You spot the man in red robes immediately, and charge at him. Your legs are wobbly and you feel sluggish, but you close the distance and strike! Only to have the blade turned away and his fist driven into your jaw. You stumble backwards and rub your chin, surprised that he managed to put up such a good defense. He looks at you with rage in his eyes. "How is this possible? I left you in that pit for more than two weeks! You shouldn't even be able to stand after this long!" He produces a knife from his robes that you recognize as the one given to you by your father, and draws closer to you. You:

You prepare to defend against his attack, and manage to do so fairly well, but your weakened state betrays you. All his strikes are slow and clumsy, but your reflexes are diminished to the point that you are struggling for breath within the first minute or so. You dodge and parry with your sickle, but he is able to graze you with the knife a few times.

"Cease your resistance! I'm tired of you heretics and your filthy ways. Every time I try to complete the ritual at the fire, more of you show up and ruin it! Just die already!"

You take a slice across the cheek, but also drive your blade into his arm. He drops the knife and you scoop it up before falling back. Seeing this, he makes a break for the barn door and the town. You:

A) Finish him off now!

You see him running for the barn doors and act fast. You hurl your sickle at him, which clips his leg and trips him long enough for you to get up and charge him. You grab him from behind and shove Dad's knife into his back as deep as you can, and both of you fall to the grass outside. You take the knife out and prepare to strike again, but he scoop up a fistful of dirt and throws it in your eyes, blinding you. As you try to recover, he keeps running. You stumble and fall twice before you realize he's nearly to the town already. You have to go back for Scipio and find somewhere else to hide from the townsfolk. You run back to the cellar only to find Scipio is already halfway out of the door. In his fist he fist is a rat with a large part of its stomach torn out, and Scipio's mouth is covered in blood. "Father help me, I hope I never have to resort to this again," he says, holding bag gags. You help him up and start running with him. The only place to hide is among the tall grass, and so the both of you begin crawling in a wide arc so as to avoid anyone coming toward the barn. You make it to the edge of town before anyone starts heading to the barn, but Scipio is feeling weak again. Do you:

A) Keep moving, we can't stay her

You help Scipio toward an empty house with a charred roof and boarded windows. You toss him into the broken window and follow after. You both land on broken glass, and you're forced to heal. You then begin searching the house for anything useful. By the grace of the Father, you find a hunk of cheese in the pantry that only needs to have the top layer scraped away. You also find a small jug of water with a bit of soot in it. You force them both down Scipio's throat and then rest. Night begins to draw close, and the whole town is searching for you, judging by the noise outside. You can't make a run at this rate, so you must wait for a chance to sneak away. Scipio sleeps from the cheese, and you keep an eye out for anyone who might come along. You doze off a few times during the night, but nothing ill comes of it. When morning arrives, Scipio is feeling much better, and you begin formulating a plan. Will you:

A) Sneak out when things seem to die down
B) Try and find your things
C) Try and find the red robed man

You confirm the plan with Scipio, and both of you prepare yourselves for when the right moment comes. Around noon, the people draw inward from the edges of town, toward the square again. This seems like the best chance you'll get, and you and Scipio both climb out of the broken window and sneak through the back alleys of the town, toward the other side. As you do this, you begin to hear the townfolk milling and mumbling in the distance. Then Scipio stops you as you're about to cross a street, and points you down to the square. You see the beginnings of a bonfire, and you are able to make some of the once incoherent mumbles as chanting. It isn't the same chant as before exactly, but it makes you uneasy. Scipio strongly suggests you investigate the square, but you have a bad feeling. Do you

A) Agree with Scipio. Something bad is happening.
B) Let him go, but warn him that it'll be extremely dangerous
C) Try to talk him out of it. You're wasting precious time

Scipio convinces you to go see what's happening, against your better judgment. The two of you sneak over as quietly as you can, to get a better look. Your heart is pounding like crazy, and you're starting to feel weak in the knees. You duck behind a brick wall and peek out into the square, and see that the people are indeed beginning another bonfire. The man in red robes is at it's base, standing between two large men who appear to be holding someone else hostage. He speaks to them as the fire begins to roar, and they hold up the person's head so they can hear whatever he is saying. You try to convince Scipio that there's nothing you can do in this state, but he ignores you and continues to watch. After a while, the man in red stands atop his box platform once more, and brings the crowd to a hush.

"As you all know, the heretics who arrived two weeks ago are gone. With them in the town, we were unable to complete the ritual of Black Fire, and we were prevented the week after they arrived when a rainstorm made the bonfire impossible to light! But I have excellent news! We have captured another heretic, and she will be our first sacrifice to the God of Black Fire, granting us his boon!" This is followed by cheers and cries of joy. "However, I am sad to say that the ritual does require two, pure sacrifices. Some of you may wonder where we are to get our second sacrifice, but fear not! For he is still among us." He raises his face to the sky, "Come out, heretic! Come out and meet your destiny! For if you do not, your child will simply have to die alone."

At this, the two men bring the hostage to her feet, and drooping there in the square is none other than Anna.

You resist your immediate urge, and take a deep breath before proceeding. Scipio asks who the girl is, but you tell him to wait for a less pressing time. You order him to wait here while you try to move around the crowd and get a better shot at the man in red, while he waits her as backup. He doesn't enjoy being sidelined, but you convince him by restating the time factor. You emerge from behind the brick wall and make a dash for a nearby cart. Luckily, the people in the town are all bowing in observance of the ritual,. so you only have to worry about a few eyes spotting you. You make your way around the outside of the crowd, weaving from cart to wall to crate, and anything that will provide you cover. At last you get behind the man in red, and see a path right to him. You'll have to skim the bonfire a bit, but you have no other choice. It's time to move, you:

A) Attack him with Dad's knife
B) Try and throw him into the fire
C) Try to knock him over and free Anna
>>

You draw Dad's knife and leap into action, bounding over debris and weaving through the crowd to get to the bonfire. The people you pass scream when they see you, alerting the man in red to your presence. But it's too late, as before he is able to run, you are already airborn and above him. You land on top of him while at the same time driving Dad's knife into his heart. Black blood gushes from the wound as he spasms, and quickly gives up his life. The people in the crowd are stunned for a moment, even the two men guarding Anna. You look up at them and feel your brands burn your skin again. The noon sun fills you with vigor and strength. In the distance Scipio leaps over the wall wielding a shovel, and the sun insignia on his belt glows a fierce gold. Beneath Anna's robe you also see a source of golden light, and she rises to her feet, tearing her arms away from the men guarding her and throwing one of them into the bonfire. All hell breaks loose as the crowd whips up into a frenzy. They begin mobbing you with stones and various instruments. You focus your mind on the verses, and try to let the sun's energy flow freely from you. This halts the crowd briefly, but they continue to entrap you. Now you see the mucky blackness of their eyes, filled with hatred. They are too far gone. You:

I acknowledge that they are too far gone, I just don't enjoy the idea of our righteous hero committing genocide. He'd try something before doing that. And as said before, from a practical point of view, genocide'd be hard with our current battle capabilities.

Using our Strength to open a way through the crowd and running away with Anna and Scipio seems like our best bet.

>>28729593
You call to Anna and throw her the knife to defend herself. You channel the Father's Light and use Strength of the Gods to clear your path to her. The two of you stand back to back and prepare for the onslaught. You can see Scipio wildly swinging his shovel to mow down sections of the crowd, but it's slow work. You and Anna begin dodging and weaving through attacks, as you strike with your fist and she with the knife. There must be 500 angry townspeople, but luckily your position makes it hard to come at you from all angles. As you catch a man's hand and punch his throat, you see a bright light burst from the crowd, resulting in several blind attackers. This happens twice more, frying the eyes of dozens of people. Then you see something gold glowing in the crowd approaching you. It moves quickly, and is hard to track while you are fighting. One woman bashes you over the head with a frying pan, but Anna slices her arm and kicks her into the dirt before she can do it again. Then you see a man who was previously running at you with a kitchen knife bisected before your eyes. When he falls, you see that behind him is Andre, wielding his twin sabers, The blades shine golden, just as Scipio's belt does. He does not stop to chat, as he deftly moves through the crowd and cuts down everyone in his path. More pillars of light burst from the crowd, staggering those hit. Now the number of attackers is dwindling, and you feel you have a real chance. You pick up a metal rod one of the townsfolk dropped and begin striking foes with brutal force.

The battle continues on, with their number decreasing every second, and you and Anna taking on more wounds. One man hurls a barrel at the two of you, which knocks you both over, but just as someone is about to plant a pickaxe in your skull, a grey blur dashes past you and takes him down. Leman Russ tears the man's throat with astonishing prejudice, and becomes the third in the center of this crowd.

Finally, as you throw a man off your back and into the bonfire to burn, the town square seems empty of foes. Now you see all your allies, and the terrible wounds they've taken on. Leman Russ limps over to you as you collapse from exhaustion, licking the cuts and gashes covering your body. You lay on your stomach and pet him, and see Andre pass by to get to Anna. He is covered in blood, and one of his sabers is snapped at the guard. He also seems to be bleeding heavily from the arm and side. You force yourself to turn and see Anna, who is also coated in blood. She smiles at you, and you can see that her hand is bleeding, and her ribs look cracked by the way she holds them. Scipio seems the least beaten up, but he is battered and bruised, and his eyes a swollen. Your strength drains, and you feel sleep coming on. You thank Andre deeply, but ask him to worry about Anna first. He nods and goes over to help her, while Leman Russ stays with you. As he licks at the wounds, you feel a surge of pain run through your body. Everything from your back, spine, ribs, stomach, and skull pound with a burning pain. You cry out for help, but before anyone comes, you vision fades. The next few things you see are blurry at best, but you later you will recall them thusly: Terrible pain. Crying. Howling. A horse. Trees. A fire. A crowd of people. Shouting. Something wet. Warmth. A voice in the dark.

Then, your senses come back. You sre in the infirmary back in the Holy Palace. You are lying in a bed, wrapped in bandages in several places. It's nearly sunset, and there don't seem to be many people around. Your hand hangs down from the side of the bed, and you can feel something soft when you move it around, which you assume to be Leman Russ. When you look down, you see Anna lying on your chest, apparently sleeping. The pain from before is dull now, and your back brands barely itch. Do you:

She sees you awake and you can spot her eyes tearing up slightly before she sniffs and hold them back. You smile at her and ask if she's okay. She affirms, and tells you that she's been waiting for you to wake up for days. The rings around her eyes confirm this. You smile at each other for a moment, and she falls on you and wraps her arms around you in a hug that makes your wounds ache. She stand up out of her chair and asks if you want anything.

"It's a long story. After you left I really was thinking about what to do with my life. I skipped training and everything just so I could have time to think without anyone interrupting me. After a few days a message came to us from your group. It said you made it to the town fine and were helping. I was relieved, but the head inquisitor said something seemed odd. Then two days later, Leman Russ came back to the Palace injured. The clerics helped him and then the head inquisitor sent some scouts to look at the town. They observed from afar for a while, and then came back saying that non of the brothers or sisters we sent were anywhere in sight. When word got around that something bad had happened, Andre and Diane asked to go and spy on the town up close. The head allowed it, but I heard about their plan and wanted to go with them. When I asked though, the head said it wasn't my place to go. I begged and cried but he kept brushing me off. Finally I got fed up and just told him to make me an inquisitor too. He tested me on a bunch of stuff, and I passed! Then I got to go and help rescue you."

A) "I'm glad you did. You really saved me."
B) "But when I saw you, you were captured."
C) "I guess all our training paid off then."

You tell her that she saved your life with her choice, and that you'd be dead right now if it weren't for her.

"It's no big deal. You saved my life before, remember?"

The two of you talk a little longer, until a cleric comes over with a tray of food. You eat and ask about your injuries. The cleric tells you that you'll be unable to leave the Palace for quite some time. You had fractured and broken bones everywhere, you lost a great amount of blood, and you were terribly emaciated and dehydrated. It was truly a miracle that you lived through the battle. You thank her, and she goes on her way. You uncover your plate and see steak, potatoes, and a fresh roll with butter. Your stomach growls and your heart flutters. You reach for the knife, but realize that you only have one usable hand because of the bandages. Anna sees your trouble and offers to help you eat, looking away at Leman Russ and trying to hide her red face.

A) "I'm hurt, I'm not an invalid. I can handle it.
B) "No, that's okay, I'll just impale the steak and take small bites."
C) "Yes, please."

You nod and hand her the knife. She cuts your steak into rather large strips and carries them over to your mouth. The first bite of meat is delicious, and the juice hurts your cheeks when you chew. You close your eyes and enjoy the taste of food, chewing until nearly a smooth paste before you swallow. Anna then scoops some potatoes for you. The salt and pepper taste is amazing. This keeps up until your plate is clean, at which point you ask Anna to hold the plate for you so you can lick it. Her face burns red, but she does it. You lay back in your bed and close your eyes. Sleep comes without you knowing.

You awake at sunrise. Anna has fallen asleep on your chest again, and Leman Russ is at the foot of the bed, warming your feet. You silently say a prayer, and sit back to relax a while until Anna wakes up. When she does, she goes off to get you some breakfast, and while she's gone, the head inquisitor arrives to speak to you. He commends you on your mission, and apologizes for sending you in so ill prepared for what happened.

A) "It's alright. You couldn't have known all that would happen."
B) "I had better get some kind of reward for all this."
C) "You're an absolute bastard."

As much as I'd like to say otherwise, we don't tend to swear and we're not greedy so

I'm not him, I just checked the catalog to see how far down the thread is. You probably have time for a couple more choices before it 404's, but it wouldn't hurt to make one now.

Also what happened to calling her cute too? That clearly had the most votes.
>>
>>28732155
Agreed, that really should happen in some way, even if just when she comes back now.

It is just a good warning for the future. Ensuring that our clergy is adequtely prepared for danger might prevent this sort of thing in the future.

If you intend to run much longer, I would make a new thread, as we are on page 9.
