My vote is for this practical, sensible spell.

An AOE is probably only useful if we get surrounded, probably quite difficult to pull off, and probably not strong enough (when cast by an inexperienced [s]dickass rogue[s]).

Failing either of those spells, I think, since they know we aren't a druid of the flame now, some sort of invisibility or magical assistance to stealth would do us wonders for all those rolls we keep failing.

From what I understand (and remember) one of our hands is mostly immune to fire. The super-heated ball of flame we used to attack the dragons (also immune to fire) actually bruised her wing when it struck, and it would kill us if we put it into contact with anywhere else.

I seem to remember it isn't insensitive to heat or anything else, as the ball and flame daggers still warm our hand when we cast them.

It doesn't but that doesn't have anything to do with the reinforced skin on one hand. We can flame knife-throw with both hands, even though only one hand was reinforced, and, as just demonstrated with THUNDERCLAP!, we're not blinded or deafened.

This is apparently due to "self-protection" but the superheat ball is too much for us to protect ourself from, since it was our first spell and we're new to this. It will still hurt us if it gets too close to anywhere else on our body.

I think we nearly facepalmed with it still in our hand once or twice. Nearly committed accidental suicide with that.

As far as you are aware, there are two levels of protection.

A temporary one that stops the effects of a spell harming yourself, and a permanent one, painfully woven into the skin of your hand.

The hand is permanently immune to all fire, similarly to a dragons scales.

Self-protection requires conscious effort, and slipping up while controlling a flame as hot as the one your first spell creates will make you lose a hand, so the permanent one is safer.
