You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

After using your grandmother as an excuse to get Marianne out of having to deal with Luciana's brother Giancarlo (who is every bit as sleazy as you were expecting), the two of you are now on your way back to her.

She seems to have taken that news as well as you could hope.
>Congratulations, you are now a mangy DOG!
>Though dogs are loyal, they're not all that smart...
>The Princess now considers you to be her friend!
>But while dogs are man's best friend, they still don't count as people.

"That was oddly satisfying," you say to the princess as the two of you watch Giancarlo do his damnedest to get as FAR away from you as he possibly can.
"Yes..." the Princess replies, a satisfied smile on her face. "I'm sure it is. Thank you for the assistance, I really dislike having to talk to him."

From that little snippet of the conversation that you were able to overhear, you can definitely understand why she would feel that way.

"I am rather surprised that he'd react like that at the mention of her name, though," Marianne says, turning to you. "You wouldn't happen to know why, would you?"
"Prince Randolf was actually just telling me a story about how she smacked him around a bit when he was younger," you reply, shrugging. "I guess that it caused a bit of trauma."
"I see... I'll make a point to thank her the next time I see her."

"I wasn't just using her as an excuse to scare him away, she really would be glad to talk with you," you say, pointing in her general direction.
"Oh?" Marianne replies, a smile of relief on her face. "That would certainly be an appreciated change in pace from being relentlessly hit on..."

So in regards to Giancarlo's

Why should it be assumed that he was talking to us? It could be to Marianne.

"I hope you've had time to think of some embarrassing stories about me to tell her," you say to the princess as the two of you make your way towards the table where your grandmother is sitting. "She seemed pretty interested in getting you to make me look like an idiot."
"I don't see why she'd need me for that," Marianne replies, cutting you a sideways glance. "You do a pretty good job of that on your own."

It's nice to see that the day's events haven't affected her sharp wit at all...

It isn't long before you reach the table, where Agnes and Citrine are happily chatting while Marius waves the two of you over.

"Mission successful?" Marius asks, giving you a thumbs-up.
"Heh, pretty much," you reply.
"Good afternoon, Princess!" Citrine says, a wide smile on her face. "It's nice to see that my little brother seems to be pulling his weight," she giggles.

Did you know Stalin likely died of poison when he died in 1953, and that in his desk was found a note written in 1938 from Nikolai Bukharin, an important Bolshevik revolutionary and close personal friend of Stalin who was put to death along with all the other Bolsheviks asking "Koba, why do you need me to die?"

Elemental spirits are able to mimic any biological lifeform. But when there aren't any around to mimic, there's a chance that they'll end up forming flesh-and-blood forms anyways... these forms are called "true demons," essentially the "natural" biological form of an elemental spirit.

Note that this ONLY happens in the case of an elemental spirit that's never had any contact with any mimicable life.

But if one demon comes into existence, it's just as easy for other spirits to mimic that form as it is to mimic, say, a human.

Tone it down, guys.
I'd appreciate it if the thread ddidn't end up autosageing because of conversation about weird shit.
>>
>>28979079

Which makes me think.

A smallish fishing village wouldn't be too hard to track down. With a small pool of people and knowing who was how old when, we could guess who'd be most likley to do it. If we look at Reinhold's hair and eye color and outstanding facial features we may get things reasonably accurate.

Though I doubt Reinhold honestly cares at this point, at least not enough to take the weeks it'd take. He HAS his family now.
>>
>>28979216
it's also entirely possible that rein's mom just stopped by on a passing boat and dropped us off at the first whorehouse she saw
>>
>>28979260

Travelling when heavily pregnant may not be that advisable health wise. Given Reinhold was reasonably healthy and his mother was presumably in good enough shape to run, it'd need to be a reasonably safe method of travel.

So if we can narrow it down to travelers we just need to check the registry for major boats that came by on a window of a few days and we'll at least have the boat they came in on.
>>
Citrine, Marianne and Agnes are all in one place... you know exactly where the conversation's about to turn. Putting on your best blank expression, you turn to the Princess.

"Please go easy on me," you say. "I'm sensitive, you know."
"Uh... what?" Marius asks, adjusting his glasses to make sure that he's not missing something.
"Oh, this is just one of Reinhold's weird jokes," Citrine says, shrugging.
"Yes..." Marianne sighs, "...he's worried that I'll make him look stupid in front of you, Mrs. Eschenwald."

Agnes then turns to you, and starts laughing.

"Don't worry, I won't suddenly hate you just because of a few embarassing stories!" Agnes giggles.
"That's right," Citrine says as she walks over to you and wraps an arm around your shoulders. "Your weirdness is just another of the reasons why you're so endearing!"
"I don't know if I'd call him 'endearing' but it does make him more interesting at least," Marianne says, clearly amused by all of this.

"Well, I don't know if this one really counts as embarrassing, but there was the time that he lost his cool maybe two days into the job and punched Monique Gilbeault in the face for insulting our friend Nicolette's mother..."

Citrine simply stares at you, stunned.

"Th- that's the guy you beat in the finals, right?" she gasps. "And I thought he was a noble..."
"Yes... he's Marcel's son, right?" Agnes asks. "From what you've said, it sounds like he's inherited his father's poor attitude," she laughs. "And if you went out of your way to defend Nicolas's daughter's honor, it's no wonder that Guillaume took a shine to you!"

>>28979488
Actually, on this note, what do y'all think the next relationship tear is? Cat, dog, maybe lindwurm? Midget?
>>
>>28979390

We don't need detailed regitry. We just need the name of the ship, when it docked, and when it set off again. If we checked other nearby coastal towns we could get a rough idea of the direction it came from and when it stopped elsewhere.

A pregnant woman about to go into labor doesn't travel lightly, so there'd need to be some kind of event that'd set off this journey. Given the context most likley something bad. Given the country hasn't had war recently it wasn't an invasion and there's no mention of a plague so we can pin it down to something reasonably local.

So it'd need to be a most likely lower class woman of childbearing age fleeing a local or personal problem, who stopped at certain ports on set days to get to our specific village. If we share a hair or eye color, that'd be an identifying mark to narrow it down further. This far away timewise getting specifics would be damn near impossible, but we can at least get a rough idea of what happened.

While the physical forms of elemental spirits that were born in secluded areas tends to get rather abstract (Prosegana was just a many-limbed jagged mass of metal before he decided that Dragons Are Awesome, for example), True Demons default to the typical humanoid structure for the most part.

"Hey, he deserved it," you say with a sigh. "Insulting Nicolette's mother was bad enough, but he was actually dumb enough to do it right after trying to suck up to the Princess here."
"Yes, that was certainly annoying," Marianne says, rolling her eyes.
"And considering that Sir Gregory was ready to kill the guy when he found out what he said, I think I did him a favor."

"Ah, yes..." Agnes says, a nostalgic look in her eyes. "Gregory's temper was always about as horrible as Volker's... those two were two peas in a pod."
"He had a bad temper?" Citrine asks. "Even when we got caught up in some... unpleasant situations, he always seemed pretty laid-back."
"That was just the image he projected," Agnes says, laughing. "Gregory blows up at people, but Volker would just go cold... he even scared me a couple of times, and my own temper isn't much better."

From what Agnes just told you, the way that Volker just casually killed those guys at the start of the last week that you spent together makes a bit more sense... not to say that you wouldn't have done the exact same thing, though.

There is only one word that you can follow up her statement with.

"Woof," you say, completely deadpan.
"...woof?" Marius repeats as he looks at you with a puzzled expression.
"I guess it's the kind of thing that's only funny with context?" Citrine says.
"Honestly..." Marianne says, stifling her laughter. "...you don't even have any remorse for your actions, either."

"Hey, I only ALMOST induced labor," you reply. "That doesn't count."
"I guess I ought to be careful around you for the next seven months," Citrine giggles as she slaps you on the back.
"Oh, I doubt that Reinhold would be careless enough to make the same mistake twice," Agnes teases.

While everyone laughs at your expense, you take the time to enjoy the scene... it's relieving to see that Marianne's actually in such a good mood after that incident that happened barely an hour ago.

"For someone who claims to hate parties like this, you sure seem to be enjoying yourself, Marianne..." a gruff voice says as its owner places a large hand on the Princess's shoulder.
"F- Father!?" Marianne gasps as she turns around to see Thierri's smiling face.

"Marius Lanzmann and Agnes Eschenwald... you've certainly made some interesting friends here, Marianne," Thierri says with a deep laugh. "Maybe you're not quite as antisocial as I thought!"
"C- c'mon, Father..." Marianne mumbles as her face turns red.

Best king? I could say worst king ever. I mean look at it, he had such badasses under his command, support of another kingdom whose king is trying his best to unite their kingdoms and he still can't invade and annex the third kingdom of slavers whom everyone hates.

still going on baseless assumptions. even though "that elemental" and its country is a big enough worry by itself, it is very likely that other power around the continent would act if anyone tried for an empire. Also there should be many more countries, powers around that reinhold doesn't know of.
>>
>>28980827

Which is actually why i am saying it would be easy to do what i just said. It is obvious other kingdoms don't give a shit.

>>28980841

Two kingdoms you could easily get under your control plus your own equals an empire, a small one at that but still. Eliminating slaver scum is just a bonus.

We are looking at this from an OOC point of view so forget about Reinhold for a sec.

And even if Thierri is actually doing something about it, it does not look like it's very effective, does it? I mean kingdom still exists, they still continue their slave trade which also means they are getting slaves, not to mention countless salves they have.
>>
>>28980864
You're really fucking dense. Anon.

It's not nearly as simple as you're making it out to be.

These slavers have alliances of their own. The whole reason they can survive with all their neighbors on their ass is because of the overseas support. Fighting them is basically provoking a world war.

Also, I don't think you've been paying attention but Marconetti and Granache have very different governing styles and policies. These would have to be addressed and changed in order for the two countries to merge properly and the nobility of either side will argue about it.

None of these things are something you decide to just fucking do.

Stop sperging about shit you won't even take the time to fully understand.
>>
>>28980860

Well, none of those relationships is formal. It's not like he had a lot to get hold of.

>>28980864

Ancelotta's government endorses slavery and there are slaver operations of undisclosed magnitude based there. There's also an awful lot of innocent civilians there.

>fantasy kingdoms with magic and man-eating giant lizards
>limited collateral casaulties
No.

I'm saying this is a job for covert operations, not for open warfare. If slaves rebelled there could be military support for them. Riding in like a pack of doomriders would do more harm than good.

On that note, Arch, what countries does Granache actually share border with, aside from Marconetti and Ancelotta? Any chance for a map?

Also you say all these based on the assumption that thierri isn't already planning anything. I am telling you he is assuredly planing things, just we are not aware of it because we are looking at this from reinhold's pov.
>>
>>28980936
Stutter incoming! Brace yourselves!
>>
>>28980897

I am aware of that. Archelon actually said something about crushing other kingdoms who try to form an Empire which is why i am actually trying to get us a justifiable reason, namely eliminating slaver scum. Marconetti and Granache used to be the same kingdom elemental do not have any right to say something about them merging. And if he also tries to prevent us from taking down the slaver kingdom, he loses the support of everyone who condemns slavery.

>>28980903

Really, didn't you think for a second that i might have just thought about all of that. Do you think yourself the only clever one here?

First of all those allies of slavers, they are overseas. Overseas. And they would nothing more than trade alliances. Because any alliance Ancoletta would have would be one born of profit.

And it isn't impossible to incorporate different governing styles especially if you take your time to remember that two kingdoms used to be one whole kingdom. It does not present much of problem, maybe a bureaucratic headache at worst but doable.

I never said they were simple. I said they were easy, which is compared to most other conquest really fuckin is.

That is what i am trying to explain here for half an hour. We are looking at things from reinhold's view. It is how the quest works, he is the mc. Therefor all we know about the world is based on the little things we manage to pay attention during classes, and from talks about other countries every now and then. Your argument for why Thierri is a bad king is really fucking poor.

Hey if the only thing a king manages to does is keep his kingdom stable, which is not hard to do in case of Granache, he is not a very good king. I mean in some cases yes it kings would be legendary for even keeping their kingdoms stable but Granache is already a strong and stable kingdom with next to no problems and big opportunities for growing. As far as we have seen.

>>28981031

You are right, Actually you have the only solid arguement on why my idea is bad, and yes you are right. We should request more world lore from Arch.

Given you might have different opinion on what a good king is, and i respect that.
>>
>>28981084

>>
>>28981101
You're entire argument for a good king seems to be based on the idea that if you aren't trying to take over other countries whenever you have the opportunity to then you suck.

That's a very unreasonable stance to take on judging a person's competence. You aren't even addressing the NEED for expansion or lack thereof.
>>
>>28981049
True, most of my arguement leans on assumptions but seriously, considering hte noblebright this setting has, what is the worse thing Thierri could be dealing it. What accomplishment that could have that we could say wow he really is a good king. Keeping a medicore kingdom with lots of allies and one might be enemy stable.

"Father, you wouldn't..." Mariane says, reeling back.
"Hmm, what would be appropriate..." Thierri mumbles, stroking his beard. "Eheh... eheheh..." he starts to laugh evilly.
"Oh God..." she mutters as she buries her face in her hands.
"Sounds like you've thought of a good one," Agnes laughs.

With a wide grin, Thierri takes a seat at the table and gets himself nice and comfortable.

"Don't worry, this one isn't TOO bad," Thierri says to his daughter.
"I pray it isn't," Marianne mumbles.
"It seems kind of far-fetched now, but Marianne used to follow Gregory around like a lost puppy. Used to be her second-favorite person in the whole wide world, right after her dear old Dad."

Sir Gregory did mention that before...

"So one day, she begged and begged and BEGGED to stay over his place so she could play with Nicolette and eat Ariane's admittedly delicious cooking." Thierri says.
"Please not this one," Marianne groans as she presses her face into the table.
"So I agreed since why the hell not, and she had a good old time..."

"...but the next morning, she'd completely vanished. Princess, bed and all," Thierri says, snapping his fingers for emphasis.
"Of all the stories in all the world, you have to pick this one..." the Princess mumbles.
"Gregory and Ariane freaked the hell out when they couldn't find her anywhere in their mansion, and he actually mobilized the Royal Guard out of fear that she'd been kidnapped."
"But she hadn't been?" Citrine asks.

There is always someone bigger than you, you need to get stronger to face them. You can't afford to not get stronger. Only when you united whole race under one rule that you can stop. That is until you find space travel.

"Nope!" Thierri laughs. "By the end of the day, I was about to lose my mind... but Arnaud found her around sunset hiding in the castle's laundry room. Turns out that she wet the bed. And then she somehow brought her mattress from Gregory's place all the way to the castle in hopes of cleaning the thing before he could find out, she was so worried that he'd hate her," he laughs. "But after going through all that effort, she ended up locking herself inside the laundry room all day before she could bring the thing back."
"Oh my..." Agnes laughs.

In the meantime, it looks like Marianne's so embarrassed that she wishes that she could actually melt into the table.

"After we finally found her, Marianne wouldn't stop crying until Gregory swore up and down that in fact didn't hate her for wetting the bed," Thierri says, patting his daughter on the back. "And then he went and made Nicolette cry right afterwards by telling everyone that she'd wet the bed that same night too!"

Just... wow. From the way she is now, you never would've expected that Marianne would ever do something like that.

Growing means progress. By not growing you risk stagnation.

But growing only in area is meaningless and harmfull which is why you should make sure you grow in all areas. You increase your influence, get more land for your citizen to live on, then you increase your wealth so you can better provide for them, social services education programs. In return, bright minds, in a safe and peaceful enviroment will carry your nation forward, their efforts will allow you to grow more.

And these things take decades to centuries to do and require a variety of different skills and actions than just of conquest and rest. You're over-simplifying things so much that you're not looking at the rest of the governing process and you're using this flawed standard to judge a king's competence because he isn't immediately doing all these things that take several generations and tons of planning to do.

You want to laugh.

You want to laugh SO BADLY.

But Marianne would probably kill you if you did, so you hold it inside.

"...how'd you get the mattress all the way to the castle without anyone knowing?" you ask. "That's kind of amazing."

Especially considering how far it is between Gregory's mansion and the castle, the idea of a little kid of bedwetting age actually lugging a huge mattress all that way is pretty impressive.

"Sh... shut up," Marianne says as she slaps the table with both hands and stands up. "shutupshutupshutupshutUP" she mumbles, burying her face in her hands while blushing profusely. "ohmygodWHYDIDYOUTELLTHEMTHATSTORY"
"C'mon, Marianne!" Thierri says, smiling at his daughter. "It was like ten years ago, there's no reason to still be embarrassed about that!"
"It looks like your story was a bit -too- embarrassing, Thierri!" Agnes says, laughing.

"Maybe it was..." Thierri says with a guilty smile. "Anyways, I came here because I wanted to show you to meet Randolf's wife," Thierri says. "If you're not too pissed at me, that is?"

After finally lowering her arms, Marianne glares at her father.

"You better not mention that story to them," she mumbles, taking his arm. "Now come on before I change my mind."

Without another word, Marianne drags her father away.

"Marianne, we're going the wrong way..." Thierri tries to say, but is flatly ignored by his angry daughter.

"That was certainly amusing," Agnes laughs as she watches them go. "Thierri's got his work cut out for him if he wants to try and get back in her good graces..."
