A man stands on the shore of a small island. Behind him is his home town, a small fishing village he's lived in all his life. Even further in the distance stands the capitol city, where the newly crowned king decided they would no longer pay homage to the ancient sea god. In front of him, the sea god rises from the depths for the first time in thousands of years, enraged that city did not make it's annual sacrifice.

You are this man, and in the early hours of the morning you are the first one to see him. You have to do something, but first of all lets learn who you are.

How old are you?
>Young, barely even a man
>Adult, full grown
>Elderly, one of the oldest in town

What is your profession?
>Fisherman, like your father and his father
>Noble, one of the few in town
>Priest, to the god of the sea
>Sailor, with your own boat
>Soldier, protector of the island
>Other, if you've got a better idea

Why were you here?
>Watching the sunrise
>Meeting someone
>A gut feeling
>Work related
>Other

I like the Elderly priest approach as it's a classic, but one that rarely gets used unfortunately.

Though this should be pretty interesting day since it's not everyday you are faced with your god rising out of the sea
>>
>>29224862
Sounds pretty good to me.
>>29225004
I'm guessing since a god just rose from the ocean that magic/mystic stuff is pretty high in this setting?
>>
>>29224862
I'll support this too.

There really is a lot of quest threads cropping up
>>
>>29225067
Very mythic, but not magic is done through complex ritual or enchanted item/places.

>>29224862
You're the villages elder priest, head of the temple of the sea god. The people come to you for religious advice, protective charms for sea faring, and the village leaders always seek you council before making decisions.

You were present at the kings coronation, the same day he declared his hatred of your lord, and like the other religious leaders were quite concerned. He made a point that none had seen any true evidence of his will in centuries, but everyone knows he just didn't want to pay his quite considerable part of the annual sacrifice. His promise that the offerings would instead be used to fund a festival may have satisfied the people, but you were not so easily swayed. This morning you awoke early to prepare the towns offering, to be pushed out to sea with the sunrise as is tradition. You've tied the barrels of fish and furs to the raft and when the others get here the ceremony proper can begin, but there is something different. The tides start coming in, high and strong, and you hear something coming from the sea. A sound you have only ever heard in your prayers.

The ancient sea god, the ever flowing tide, the shadow of the waves was rising. For a moment you are awestruck, you may be the first mortal in over a thousand years to lay eyes upon him, but the circumstances were far from ideal. His rage had destroyed the first empire... as well as the second and third, and on this rampage your home would be but a minor casualty among millions.

You have to do something, but what?
>Go warn the mayor
>Rouse the town to evacuate
>Pray to your lord
>Other

You do know some magic rituals and have enough time, as well as the necessary offerings, but what spell could help against the sea itself?

Pray to your lord

Pray like you have never prayed before. We were always a faithful and devoted servant.
>>
>>29225583
Pray like there is no tomorrow.

Ask, beg, plead. There must be something that could be done to calm their rage. We have been a faithful servant to you through our life please spare our village.
>>
>>29225583
Pray for time. Time for us to pick out those still faithful for him. Show him that there are still believers loyal to him, at least enough to start a new village or town in the aftermath of his rage.
>>
>>29225583
Crazy thought. We have our villages offering that is tied to a raft right? What if we send the raft off but we climb aboard and ask that our lord spare the village. One man might be foolish but there are still many who remain loyal
>>
Not only do you Pray to be spared, but Pray that you may join your God in righteous anger and kill all the unbelievers.

All you ask is for your village not to be destroyed because you can lead them to Holy War.

There is no other course of action. You throw yourself to the ground and start reciting all of your church's prayers, pleading to your lord to spare anyone, if not your kingdom then at least your home. You feel the sea rise up around you and sea the offering raft pulled away. Even as the water comes to your shoulders you do not let up, praying as the salty water envelops you. At first you feel terrified that the waves will mark your end, but then you feel a rush as the water lifts you into the air. You open your eyes and find yourself only a few feet away from your lords face.

"Speak mortal!" He demands, his voice roaring like the sea in a storm. "Why should I spare any of you?"

"My lord, we are not but insects to you, but the people of my village have been nothing but faithful." You plea desperately. "I would not dare ask you to calm your wrath, but at least spare them."

"They still serve your foolish king!" He roars in response. "Many of your people still pray to me, but still obey that blasphemous rat!"

"The king is young and misguided, he has never seen your true glory. Surely he can be swayed."

He ponders your words for a moment, staring at the capitol in the distance. "You have faith in your heart and I would never ignore the truly devout. I will give you one day to change your king's mind. At sunrise tomorrow there will be an offering and I will return to the depths. But if there is not, I will ravage this land as I have before."

"But my lord?" You ask. "I am only one man, wouldn't your form be enough to teach him to praise you?"

"Your king has deprived me of what is rightfully mine. If one man can defy me, then only one is needed to enforce my will."

There are questions in your mind, but mercy like this is unheard of. "I will go my lord, if that is your will." In an instant you find yourself back on the shore. The sea had receded and all signs of your lord's presence had vanished.

As the sun rises, you make haste back to the village. You'd often dreamed of going on a holly quest, but never though you'd be off to save the kingdom.

How will you get to the capitol?
>Hire a ship to take you to the mainland, but there's no garuntee someone will take you

You head to the temple to get some money, it may not be a god but it is still a source of power. The people had been quite charitable recently with the day of offerings being near, so you manage to gather quite a bit of gold. You then head to town hall and into the mayors office. She had just arrived when you get there and you explain what you saw and the mission you've been given, then ask for a ship which you are willing to pay for.

(rolled 5 and 14)

"Father, these are very serious claims you are making." She responds. "While I was more than willing to allow you to make our towns offer, I have to say I agree with the king. These offerings to an ancient god drain part of the kingdoms wealth every year, such waste based on an old legend is preposterous."

"But I saw him!" You reply. "I heard his voice and felt his wrath all around me!"

"I believe you, or rather I believes that's what you think you saw." She says condescendingly. "But if that was true, there would be signs. The waves you described would have reached this building and if he was truly so loud it would have woken the whole town. I understand that the king is defying your faith, it is far worse in the capitol where they outlawed the offerings entirely. I think your just afraid of the change and dreamed about what you saw. I'm sorry, if there was a ship heading to the mainland today I'd gladly secure you a ride to speak to the king, but I won't take an entire ship off of its route because of a nightmare." She opens the door to let you out. "Besides, I remember hearing you recite the legend when I was a child and you were quite specific about how vengeful the sea god was. Why would he be so merciful at the request of one man?"

You leave town hall, discouraged by the mayor's word. Was it a dream? Are you just afraid of things changing?

...No!

You know what you saw and know what has to be done.

You return to the temple to see some of the younger priests preparing for the morning services. They welcome you and ask about the offering, but you start barking orders for them to prepare for a ritual. None of them have actually used magic, but they've been studdying hard under you for a while and prepare the circle perfectly.

"What kind of ritual is this going to be?" One of them asks you. You only have the materials for a single ritual right now and there are several ways you could do this.

What ritual do you cast?
>Teleport: The quickest way but your priest's inexpirience may cause accuracy problem

>>
>>29227620
Fair enough
The gods of this world are massive ancient beings, all physical and in the world, capable of using tremendous feats of magic with little to know effort, where as mortals can only use magic with complex rituals and years of study.

The sea god used his ability to manipulate the ocean to hunt enough food to sustain himself, using massive waves to pull things in from the land and swallowing entire schools of fish. Ancient men made a deal with him, if he used his powers to regulate the sea and not ravage the land to feed, they would make him an offering of one fifth of their wealth in food once a year to keep him fed. When they don't keep up there end of the del, well the game

As for the capitol, it has three districts in three rings. The outer district is mostly farm land, peasant areas, and a few docks with some of the harbor reaching into the market district. The market district is exactly what it sounds with a large harbor and the temple of the gods. The royal district is in the center of the city with massive parks, museums, centers of learning, manors, and the royal palace in the center. I'll give a description of the palace when we get there, but it is a good distance from the ocean.

As of typing this the winning vote is the albatross, I'll take the final count and start the next post after this
>>
>>29227831
So he's a god of waterbending. He's been known to use water to manipulate land, and has no control over sea creatures. Not especially known for pulling the salt out of seawater, healing, or getting power from the moon, but he could probably make floating/submarine island paradises if he so chose.

none of that is really helpful for getting to the castle though.

no rivers or lakes? Any mountains or waterfalls nearby? If that's right, it's a little odd for a castle built by Sea God worshippers to not be near any source of water.
>>
>>29227831
Sea god is not a "god" in the sense that it created the world, or mankind, or really did anything. But damned if I'm not going to call that gigantic sea asshole what ever he wants me to call him.

A cup of sea salt and an albatross feather in the center of a pair of wings, the last time you used this ritual was to guide a lost ship back home. The other priests take their positions around the circle and you begin chanting.

"God of beasts, give me command." Golden symbols appear on your right hand. "God of the sea, grant it your might." Your left hand
glows with a blue light. You place your hands on the circle, the symbols on your arm move into their positions in the circle as the blue light takes the shape of a great bird. When the ritual is finished, a massive albatross with gold tipped feathers and glowing blue eyes stands in the center of the circle. You lead it outside and climb onto its back.

"Father, where are you going that you need such transportation?" One of the priests asks.

"The Capitol." You respond. "Our lord has given me a quest that only I can complete. I only hope I have enough time." The albatross flaps it greats wing and you takes off.

Soon you are gliding across the stretch of sea between your home and the mainland. From here you can see the capitol, the ships at the dock, the miles of farm land, so many lives in danger, all in your hands. The full weight of what's at stake starts to hit you again, but now it strengthens your resolve. You will make the king see the error of his ways.

The palace and royal district get their water from a spring and the city worships many gods, the sea god just demands the most tribute.

The sea god can do more than just control water, that's just what separates him from other gods. Also, magic is not just based on which god you worship, his spells were limited by what they had at their disposal, being a priest of the sea god it makes sense to have sea themed materials. In the city, the possibilities will be much less limited

The mayor's words echo through your mind. She'd been to you sermons since she was a child, yet you could not convince her of the danger. How could you sway a king who actively denies your lord?

You will need help from other priests, people who appreciated the power of the gods and would take your warnings seriously. As you flew in over the city you noted the position of the sun. it was almost ten o'clock.

The people in the streets looked up at you in wonder. Magic was typically reserved for emergency situations, official business, and grand celebrations so it always drew a bit of a crowd when used. You land in front of the temple of the gods. As you dismount, you wave your hand and say a short chant, turning the albatross back into symbols on your arm. The ritual you cast put it at your disposal until sunset, hopefully you won't need it that long. Due to the growing crowds, the priests were already expecting you and three are waiting to meet you. Aaron, headmaster of the Capitol University and priest of the god of knowledge, a well dressed man in his late thirties; Zed, a druid of the god of beasts whose long scraggly beard, ratty cloak, and hunched back made you look young by comparison; and Jahzara the cities head priestess of the god of the sea, who wore a deep blue ceremonial dress as would be tradition for the offering. You'd met each of them at some point in your life, but you'd spent most of your life in the village rather than here.

"Welcome, Brother." Jahzara said. "What brings you to the city on what I would think would be a day of worship for you?"

"Quite the entrance you made." Aaron added as he adjusted his spectacles.

"Well it's kind of an emergency." You reply. "This morning I awoke to a terrifying site."

"Do tell." Said Aaron "But please come inside first, a crowds starting to form and the king is not a big fan of crowds at the temple."

You follow the three priests inside and explain to them what you saw. At first they have trouble believing you but they quickly see the fear in your eyes, the same fear they've felt when beholding their own patrons.

"I knew something like this would happen." Said scowled as he took out a pipe and lit it. "Even when he was a child, I always thought the prince would be the death of this kingdom. Now that he's king he thinks no god is above him. If I didn't care for this land I'd say let him face what he has coming."

Their understanding and anger is a relief to you. "So you'll help me convince the king to make the offering?" You ask. They all give you discouraged looks.

"If it were only that simple." Aaron began. "The king doesn't just doubt the sea god, he wants to bring an end to their worship entirely. Since their was no attack at sunrise like we would expect, he'll start to think he can ban their worship entirely. If the festival he's throwing tonight is a success, he'll probably have the peoples support to do it and I don't think he'll give up that easily."

"Also, he doesn't take to kindly to priests of any kind." Jahzara added. "We can get an audience, but he never speeks to more than two of us at a time."

Zed scowled at the mention of the policy. "He says we tend to gang up on him, try to intimidate him. Well that brat should be afraid!" He took a long drag of his pipe to calm down.

You were afraid of something like this, but you can't give up yet. The king has to be made to listen somehow.

Who will you go with?

Hey guys, I have an idea
History/mythology states that the last two empires were destroyed when the king stopped paying tribute to the Sea God.
It sounds vaguely to me that there is a Mandate of Heaven of some kind in the kingdom. Perhaps when we meet with the king we should put this in our argument. If the king adamently chooses to deny customs, he may start to come off as a failing monarch in the eyes of a fair number of the commoners.
>>
>>29229148
>>29229164

You decide to go with Aaron, since he's more than just a priest around here. You ask the other to go spread the word to the people to get their support for the offering.

"Good idea, I'll head to the docks" Jahzara says. "I already planned to have a ceremony in honor of the sea god since there wasn't going to be an offering, anyone who attends is sure to support us."

"And if that doesn't work, I've got another plan." Zed adds "I know a few farmers and some folks in the slums who already hate the king. When they find out his stupidity is gonna get them killed, they'll rally behind us. Then it's just a matter of forcing our way into the palace."

Zed's plan concerns you a little. "Now we don't need an angry mob." You tell him. "It's not like we're trying to overthrow him or something."

Zed grab's by the shirt and pulls you down to eye level with him. "Now you listen here you island dwelling village priest." He says in an angry tone. "This isn't just about your littlr town in the water, it's not even just this city, every living thing in the world would be affected if just one of the gods went mad. If that little rat refuses to listen to reason, then we're gonna have to force him to do what's right at any cost." He releases you and heads toward the door. "If that need arises, I hope your ready." He adds as he leaves

Jahzara gives a polite bow as she leaves as well, a little shaken by Zed's tone, while you and Aaron head to the exit closer to the palace. "I hate to say it, but he might be right." Aaron says. "There's a lot at stake here, and it's our responsibility to make thos offering happen."

"I know." You reply. "I'm just not used to the idea of saving the world yet, let alone doing it violently."

"Well, for what it's worth, I don't think it will come to that." Aaron says. "The sea god believed you would be enough to change the kings mind, and who are we to question the gods?"

The two of you make your way through the royal district. In all of your life you've never seen the beautiful marble building of the nobility or the other magnificent decorations they had built, In the center of it all stands the royal palace, a monolithic building made of marble and gold that towers about the surrounding buildings. The interior is just as breathtaking, fine silk curtains, gold and silver statues, guards and visiting nobles everywhere. You've only ever seen one thing more awe-inspiring, and that was the god who sent you here.

You come to the throne room, where an excessive amount of ebony stairs lead up to the throne, where the young king sits enjoying a glass of wine. The king is quite young, having been crowned at 23 after his father's passing. His blonde hair seems unkempt, as they he'd just gotten back from a party. He seems quite relaxed, almost friendly, until he sees who's approaching. He puts down his glass and straightens his posture, giving him his father's imposing presence.

"Aaron, who is this commoner?" He asks giving you a judging glance.

Aaron clears his throat, a bit intimidated by the king. "He is the head priest of the the church of the sea god for the village..."

"You're from that little town just off the coast aren't you?" The king interrupts.

"Yes your majesty, I am." You answer. "And I've come to you with dire news."

"Of course you have, just as Jahzara has been for the past few months. The wrath of the sea god has destroyed 3 empires before... blah blah blah. Don't you priests ever get tired of that same story.

"It's not just a story, it's true. The entire kingdom is in grave danger" You respond.

"Your majesty, I think we should listen to him." Aaron comments.

"And why is that?" The king asks. "What makes this priest any different from the others who've come to me to beg me to change my mind?"

"I saw him." You say flatly.

"Come again?" The king asks.

"I saw him, your majesty." You repeat. "I saw the ocean part that he may rise from, I saw the water rise around my home as he moves, I saw the thousands of years of age in his face, and I saw the anger in the eyes that has destroy countless lives before."

The king tries to speak, but no words come. Like the priests, he seems to see the fear of the divine in you.

"Your people will demand the offering be made. If you don't fear my lord, then you should at least fear them. Do you think you can deffy both a god and a nation?"

"The people can be bought!" He finally manages to say. "Besides, if you saw him this mornign, then why didn't he do as promised and destroy us?"

"I made a deal with him."

"Did you now?"

"Yes, your majesty. he told me that if I can convince you to make the offering before sunrise tommorow, he will spare our lands from his wrath." Your voice carries the authority you felt from your lord.

The king stands up and turns away from you. "If I refuse..." He says in a somber tone. "Then he will come at dawn?"

"That's right."

He turns to face you, a devil like grin on his face. "Excellent"

And on that note, I need to get some sleep as it is 7AM my time(central US). I should be back sometime after 3PM, and will start the post with a bit of lore about the gods to answer some of the question you've been asking

If you have any really pressing questions, I can stay up a bit more to answer them if you'd like.

I hope you are enjoying Just One Man's Quest as much as I am.

It takes you forever to post OP, but I think it's well worth the wait and I'm enjoying it immensely.

I'm very interested in seeing how this pans out, our priest can be in a very awkward position (if the king does have a plan, which is all but a certainty) between loyalty to his god (who is a dick) and backing of the king (who hates religion and is a little shit-head) to which he swears fealty, and all to protect the people of the land.

Honestly? Loyalty can go fling itself off a cliff and drown. I think we don't have to care for either.

But we do have to care for the people. The innocent. We handle spiritual matters and help them as best we can. That is our duty. And it's what's right.

We must protect the people of the kingdom. And it's very much looking like the king is insane.
