You neither expected, nor were prepared for that barrage of linguistics. You sit slack jawed a moment, debating if you could retaliate in some way before deciding against it. <Well, since you've gone and swooped in and taken all the good bird related puns I don't think could manage a response. I believe I'll concede this one." Veles, for his part just sits chuckling as goes from roost to roost, checking the nests for what you can only presume are eggs. After some time he pulls one out. <Another?> you ask, <Forgive me if I sit out of the imprint session>

He gives you a glance before shining projecting some light from his hand, holding behind the egg, <That won't be necessary, this one is a dud.>

<A dud? What will be done with it then?> You ask, watching as he places the fist sized thing in a small basket near the doorway.

He grins, <Breakfast.>

You pre-empt any drooling over the thought of hawk omelettes by placing a hand to your mouth and changing the subject <You mentioned something about more mastery of my racial traits? And learning magic.>

He nods as he continues checking the nests. <That is a definite possibility it would take some time, and I would need to get the jars ready.>

<Jars?>

<Yes, some of our venoms are... less than pleasant to deal with, and properly accessing them without a way to dispose of it is, in a word, unwise.> he says. Finishing up the last roost. <As for the magic, well, I would imagine you were more keen on returning home before nightfall, besides through that archway there is where we will be setting up the gateway rune.>

You look to the other side of the roost, past the hawks (who now have judged you not a threat, and are milling about) and to the darkened archway beyond. You mull over what he said.

Let's earn that breakfast.
>>
>>29240138
well, let's eat breakfast if he's serving. Always good to get some eggs. Otherwise, let's get on home- we've imposed long enough, and we can get more lessons next time we visit. Besides, I worry about the ranch.
>>
>>29240251
this is a portal vote, if I was unclear, which I realize I was. I'd appreciate earning the breakfast like the other guy says, if we can help with the portal. Or with the cooking.

To clarify, its late midday right now. He just mentioned that he eats the unfertilized hawk eggs. If it takes as long as it did at the ranch you reckon it would be getting close to dusk before the portal is finished.
Also checking something.
>>
>>29240485
ah, well, just a portal with no breakfast then.

Like I said, we'll bug him for more lessons next time we visit. We'll bring some milk or beef or something.
>>
>>29240523
Sounds like a plan! Perhaps we had also ought to ask to borrow some reading material, perhaps get some idea of the parts of our physiology that we are ignorant to.
>>
>>29240883
good idea. We lent him books after all, right?
If I am just misremembering that, then let's lend him books later.

Wonder how we'll get the capital to get the land all set up. I mean, we have cattle, but that will take a while to produce significant profit. The hot springs are great, sure, but without an actual industrial draw, there won't be people just hanging around to use 'em.
>>
>>29241568
There's a lot of potential money to be made dealing with the Centaurs and (if we choose to) allowing people through the mountain pass.
First thing's first I think, we need to finish surveying our land before deciding how best to profit from it.

Did OP get bogged down by real life again?
>>
>>29241691
probably not, he just usually takes a while to update.

The centaur plan is a good one, though it does sort of rely on Veles showing us a good way through the mountains. Something big enough to get a cart through, or at least some donkeys or something.

Seems like plan survey has the best chance of finding what we need, still.

>Get the portal set up handle more later

<Best that we get working on that portal then I suppose.> You say, as tempting as learning more about your nature is, your ranch being a higher priority in your mind.

<It would be advisable yes, please, follow me.> He says, removing the heavy leather gloves he was wearing and heading toward the archway. It is here you see something unusual. A door, aside from the moving slabs, you haven't seen anything close to a door in this entire place. Veles heads up to it, and unbolts it, pulling it outwards into the hallways. The two of your are enveloped in a cloud of dust that gives you a small coughing fit, but you make your way inside. In here is a more elaborate setup. It appears that whoever made this inlaid the interior of this cavern with brick and paving stone and turned created a perfectly circular room. Along the walls, larger recessed caverns with braziers mounted outside them sit facing the center. A spiral ram extend around one side, going upward into an area you can see a sliver of daylight from.

You take it all in as Veles moves to one of the alcoves, you see him scrape away a layer of dust from the circular stone in the center. On it you can a faint etching of runes. <What is this place?> you inquire, curiosity at the different architecture getting to you.

Veles looks up from the dais and gives you a wistful smile, <Before my sire left, this was one of her hubs. It connected with lairs she had across the seas and other important places. I've not been in here since, well, since the last portal rune finally died out three hundred years ago.> By way of explaining he channels something into the runes you see, which glow faintly then abruptly fade. <The portals are not made to be eternal. They will fade with disuse, sadly, I've had no way of upkeep on the ones across the sea, especially given the boundary that was in place and not knowing what had happened over there.> You watch as he channels something into his hand placing it in the center of the circle. Just like that the runes fade from the plate, as you see new runes snake out from the center as Veles takes a step back. <Something simple I've found, if I can create a lock on the other rune from here, it will replicate that inscription by itself through thaumaturgical resonance.>

<You seem to have a lot of shortcuts.> You say, making conversation.

<I've had time to learn them.> He responds, <A lot of magic theory is redundancies and checks to make sure you don't get it wrong, because it can be bad when you do.>

<Sounds like I'd have a lot to learn.> You say, a bit dubious if an ancient lamia is telling you it takes time, it probably means a lot of time.

<It all depends, you seem to have an aptitude, and I suspect it would be a lot easier to teach what has already been learned rather than break new ground.>

He returns his focus on the spreading spiderweb of runes with a bit of a smile, leaving you watching as well.

<Veles,> You query, <Would it be all right if I borrowed a couple of your books? The snakescript ones I mean, I don't know the other language.>

He gives you a slightly bemused look, <They are just some notebooks from my findings. I suppose you can pick a few out. Would be rude not to after the ones you lent me.>

<Speaking of not wanting to be rude, but you mentioned something about a way through the mountains as well?> You also venture a bit hesitantly.

He grins here. <Well, you've already been through one of them.> He nods to the ramp. <That should give you a view of the other side.> He fishes out a pair of binoculars identical to the ones you had found on the workshop from his pack and hands them to you. <Go have a look.>

You head towards the ramp, ignoring the trail you leave in the dust as you head up rounding a corner before shielding your eyes from the glare. Its actually rather astounding really, its what appears to be a spire jutting off from the mountain, however all around you are downward facing crystal panels, providing an unobstructed view of your immediate area. Stooping lower onto your belly, you are able to see farther out. Below you see snow covered highlands extending off towards what you can only guess as further south you watch a very clearly defined valley form and spiral off into, while it is hard to make out, what looks like sparse scrubland.

You take Veles binoculars and look through them.

You bring the binoculars up to your eyes, impressed with their magnification level, however, you are more impressed with what looks to be a small colored light inside that seems to shift in color from a violet to a deep red as you sweep the binoculars further out. Noticing the color return to violet when you focus back on your starting position. This must be what Veles tinkering was all about on that table, after experimenting with that a bit you wager the hue changes depending on distance. You then scan the crest of the hills. Its then you see them.

Through the binoculars, light indicator a reddish orange, you see movement cresting a hill, very small shapes but you think it was a rider. Then you notice the lack of a horses head and the rider sitting far to up. Centaurs. At what looks to be three of them poking around heavily bedecked in fur trimmed clothing. From your vantage point you watch as they meander about moving to one of the glacial melt pools.

They're kind of sort of our neighbors, once-removed. It's cool that they seem to have some people nearby, that will make finding them much easier later on.

I'd like to get the basics of their language down before we rush out to introduce ourselves, though.
>>
>>29243989
Ya, we should put learning their language on our to-do list, ask if Veles can teach us. If all proceeds smoothly we're going to be doing quite a bit of dealing with them in the future.

You wave your tail back and forth as you watch them, you have no real means of contacting them at the moment, as you already don't speak the language and there is literally no way they could see you, if the shadow cast over the crystal pane is any indication. You resolve yourself to try and learn the Casimiran language as soon as possible. You tear yourself from spying on the distant trio and head back down.

<See anything?> The old snake says by way of greeting.

<Group of centaurs>, you say, a touch of giddiness creeping into your voice, <Far end of the valley, they were foraging it looks like.>

He sniffs, <A bit odd they are this close, though its happened before.>

You watch as he continues to tend to the channelling, watching as the runes grow and rotate into position. Its almost hypnotic and before you know it your watching with interest as the glyphs finalize their position. Veles backs off and stretches, <Well that's about that> he says, rotating his shoulder, <Lets see about those books.>

You talk with him quickly, and while he doesn't have any real primers on language like you did, he does have a small notebook he wrote on Casimiran linguistics. Its not the most readable thing, and will be a bit of a challenge to decipher, but should provide you with a diversion. He also loans you his observations on lamia physiology, mostly diagrams before you head back up to the portal hub.

<This should be a snap, all you have to do is place your hand on the rune and focus on it.> You do so, and jump back as a square shaped tear appears in the air in front of you, through it you see your house. The tear fills the alcove and you watch as he waves his hand in and out of it, before slithering through himself. <Alright miss, just walk on through.>

You take a deep breathe and speed your way through the portal. There is no strange sensation, no tugging or pulling, its just as if you stepped over a threshold and suddenly it feels warmer.

You take a brief moment to make sure your limbs are intact, patting yourself down and checking the tip of your tail. Veles chuckles to himself and proceeds back to his side of the gate, give you a short wave that you return. The portal then winks out of existence, leaving an identical glowing rune design on the grass below the tree, that quickly fades to nothing. You place your hand there, focusing on it and watch as the runes spring back to life, opening the gate once more just in time to see Veles' tail slip out the doorway, closing the hub shut.

You wait for the portal to close once again. Tempted to poke it with a stick, but decide against it, not wanting to possibly damage any of the work your snake friend has done.

Once again you feel your extremities, making sure you are in one piece before you head to your room and swap into more appropriate clothes than the heavy cold weather gear you were using, taking care to place Veles' hide bound journals one the nightstand before you look to see where your hands are.

You look out your window and see the bunkhouse is dark, no lamps whatsoever which is strange, but you do see light coming from the barn. Throwing on a coat, you step into the refreshing night air, enjoying the last dying glimmers of the sun and head across the compound. Slithering up the side, you see McCain taking watch, and some odd noises coming from within.

"Good shot there 'trigger'." You hear Tai's voice coming from the inside

"Shut it, it wasn't my fault that it snuck up on me, you told me to keep watch and that was what I was doing." Marie's voice, in a plaintive distress

"No reason to go off half cocked just because it startled you." McCain supplies, you detect a hint of mirth in his voice.

"I didn't mean to, I'm used to flying, not hefting a rifle around playing sentry."

You sidle up see McCain, leaning against the wall and out of sight of the other two, and you give a slight cough causing McCain to look toward you. You see his normally dour expression split into a terrible grin as he nods to you, seeing what is about to happen. You continue on into the barn where you see Tai elbow deep into the guts of a deer. Marie on the other hand is flitting about nervously over one side of his shoulder to the other watching as the Pheonix Empire kid works on field dressing the dear.

"I heard someone made a mess." you say quietly.

The reaction is about what you expected, Marie turns and jumps backwards at least five feet with a string of curses. Tai on the other hand, freezes, hands still well inside the dead animals chest cavity. He then slowly turns his head. "Oh hello Miss Sasha."

"What happened here?"

You say, looking at the dead animal.

Marie ventures forward. "After I went to the Nitor posting and told them about the bandits, I swear I caught sight of them winging back, so McCain put me and him on sentry duty, me near the woodpile and out of sight. This deer came up behind me and... well it grabbed my clothes, I whirled and shot as it ran and it well..." She gestures to the body.

"Nobody was hurt, and so long as you're careful, we'll all keep from picking up a few extra holes. Good work. Now, you ever tried venison? It's pretty good."

It continues on this way, with you here, McCain tosses his rifle to you yet again and you wait outside while he takes over the worst of the process from Tai. Between the two of them the deer is drawn and quartered relatively quickly. However, by the time they are finished and have it safely stowed away it is well into the night. Tai takes the liberty of taking some of the backstraps and placing them on a hot griddle, adding some mushrooms, peppers, and onions from his supply and you have a quiet, but delicious meal on the porch, before everyone says their goodnights, leaving for the bunkhouse and you make your way up to your room and drift off to sleep.

>The drifting ship

You see a sailing ship. A big merchant barque. It is listing in the water as the waves jostle it about the sea. The heat of the sun is relentless, to the point where even you are glad for the waves cresting over the bow. The for a ship this big the lack of movement strikes you as odd. There should at least be some sailors, right? Then you see it closer. Some sort of terrible battle had taken place here, dark red stains on the deck give a clue as to the fate of the deckhands. You see the wheel firmly lashed to one point heading due southeast, though with the wind, the speed is crawling at best. You then see movement, a small boy running from the cargo hold with a bucket of water, heading into the captains cabin. You then see him tending to a man on a bed, trying his best to get the man to drink the water. The man weakly shoos the boy away. You seem to pull away from the ship, and in the distance, a familiar ship heading toward the stricken one on intercept course...

You wake to the smell of frying venison and give yourself the pleasure of a luxurious stretch before disentangling yourself from the nest of blankets and pillows your bed invariably turns into. Getting dressed you head downstairs, seeing Tai managing the cookware once more. You can't say you've had venison steak and eggs for breakfast before, but you aren't complaining. Breakfast chatter consists of mostly ribbing Marie, and discussing what to do about the bandits.

Plans and stuff are always the hardest.
We've not explored the land or done anything on the homestead recently. Let's maybe spend some time caring for the cattle with our hands, if they could use the help. Not much we can do about bandits other than be around with our gun.

I want to start getting ready to go off exploring some more, so maybe preserve some of that deer all travel style. Maybe ask the hands which would like to go exploring with you, if any, while we're working with them.

I say we go, inspect the property, see if the bandits have sabotaged any thing further. After that, let's make sure everyone's shooting irons are good to go. If we need replacement parts, we should do that don't rather than later.

well, I don't think we'd mind diamond smuggling nearly as much. Why would anyone want to get diamonds to centaurs?

I should read the image names sooner.

You decide, as much as you want to explore your land, with the thread of this Karath and his cronies, it would be best to maintain farm security. That said, there is plenty you can do here to get ready for your exploration. It takes a good 10 hours to properly smoke venison, so you could tend to that while the rest handle the cattle. McCain has been keeping regular patrols on Greenbriar, and while it doesn't look like the ones you ran into have been back, he's not sure.

You mention noticing wild horses on your property, which grabs McCain's interest. Apparently more than a few people would be in the market for them, provided you could find a way to break them in. Tai pipes up saying that he has a little experience in horsebreaking, having done it occasionally on his old ranch. You give him a somewhat skeptical look. He's pretty tall, and everything you've heard about riders has them as shor things, but you don't voice your reservations.

Despite Marie's crack shooting incident last night, she volunteers to do patrol today, provided she can fly. McCain is fine with it, and rather having someone willing. You allow it. She wings off as you set up a smoking stand in the middle of the compound. During which McCain and tai saddle up to tend to the cattle. You are left on your lonesome, near the porch, sunning yourself in the mid morning sunrise, rifle on one side, books on the other.

unless you wanted 1d20 from three people, then oops.

It seems like the hands we've hired have things well in, er, hand.
Enjoy the sunrise and read a book, I suppose. Probably the centaur language one for as long as it takes us to get bored.
I think we might take tai up on his offer to help break the horses, next time we go out. He can look for native spices, too.

This sounds good. Seeing as Marie can't fly with a rifle, we might talk to her about carrying a pistol.

the roll result doesn't seem that different, so it has something to do with the 20 and 1?
Puzzling.

Went from 9-9-5 to 4-20-1 each die was for different things.

You settle yourself to reading the Casimiran language book. Its slow going, but you are making sure progress, by midday you know you have their alphabet down which is the biggest step. You note that just as Veles said, there are some parallels between it and the UFK standard. You start drawing a few of the words and trying to commit them to memory. The important bits, however being able to read it and being able to pronounce it is a different matter. You skim a few pages and find halfway through, Veles went into phonetics, which you then proceed to pour over as well. You make some tentative guesses and know you sound horrible, but its all a matter of learning, right? It takes a while but you are pretty pleased with your progress when you hear the whistle.

Shooting out of the sky Marie comes barrelling down towards you, landing primly nearby and pointing over the horizon.

"I knew I had seen those bandits, look over the ridge." She says between deep lungfuls of air. You follow where she is pointing and see three riders, making a slow progression over over the ridge, and into a smaller valley, all but concealing them from sight. "I told McCain, and he told me to let you know. What do you want us to do Miss Masterson?"

"And here I was looking forward to the mid-afternoon sun.

Grab a pistol from McCain, Marie, and be ready. I think I've got to go say hello to some visitors."

After which we can sneak after them and either listen in, or talk at gunpoint, about their plans. We will then inform them that their plans instead involve getting off our property, most likely.

Marie's such a good spotter.

though, these guys hanging around just won't do. Dealing with guys with guns wasn't in the contract, and I'd hate to see hands spooked away because of this.
>>
>>29258623
Yeah, I say we and McCain go slay bodies. If we go up and get an eye on them, we might be able to bushwhack those bastards. Fuck bandits.
>>
>>29258997
I think we already shot 'em up. I wonder why they're sticking around in the first place?

Probably can't retreat past the sheriff station or something. Whatever it is, let's go run 'em off of the property.
>>
>>29259218
I am disinclined to let two legged varments wander around our property. Bad for us and ours and worse for our neighbours.
>>
Ok guys. Sorry to do this since I really hate to call it here, but I am going to have to. My computer near bricked itself and I'm going to have to go through it and find the offending piece of equipment. I've just lost two updates to the thing, ones I know I saved to the .txt but had them vanish. Again, my apologies.

canid, you have some problems. Like, major computer problems.

I hope you eventually can figure them out.

Thanks for the run!
