You roll over in the grass, still unused to the uncomfortable feeling of having your face rearrange itself. Staring at the sky, you realize that your life is never going back to the way it was just a few months ago. Today is a repeat of yesterday, tomorrow will be a repeat of today. You feel like Lunatic High's 'defense course' will never end.

It's early morning and once again, Lunatic High has attempted to impart her wisdom upon you by mauling you and leaving your broken body to put itself back together in your back yard. The UGN instructor looms over you, her messy silver locks falling forward and tickling your nose. On her face is a look of absolute disgust, and she crosses her arms while standing back up.

"Weak, Wild Card, weak!"

Here it comes again. You've gotten used to these lectures by now, so you bear it in silence.

"How many times do I have to tell you? You've got to let yourself go! If you keep trying to fight half-assed like that, the Renegade is eventually going to get fed up. You don't want to lose your mind to that virus, do you?"

Yeah, yeah...For the past month, Lunatic High has been telling you all sorts of empty motivational phrases: 'Get wild', 'show your passion', 'cut loose', and other sorts of vague, cryptic advice that you don't think is going anywhere. It's true that you haven't shown any new abilities, despite your efforts, but is that so bad? Wouldn't it be best if you just took it easy and rode this whole situation out?
>>

"Listen, the Chief thinks that you beat Diablos fair and square, but I've fought that monster. There's no way you could have really beaten him with the way you're fighting now. He was either toying with you or he's up to some kind of trick. I'd bet every ounce of booze I have that he's the reason that girl's been in the hospital."

Ah, that's right. Ayase has been in the hospital this past month, hasn't she? You made some visits as part of the class, but it just seemed like a regular illness to you. Even the doctors from the UGN said there was nothing amiss. Nevertheless, Lunatic and Claire have been very suspicious of the whole situation. Which brings you to your current situation: They want you to protect Ayase until she feels well again. You objected strongly at first, but after Lunatic offered to cut your probationary period in half, you decided it was in your best interests to put in at least a little work.

After testing out your body and confirming that it is back in one piece, you sit up and think about what you had to do today.

>Didn't you have to talk to the Chief? Apparently, something has gone wrong with Yeager.
>You need to have a 'visit' with Ayase. You heard that her illness has gotten a little worse.
>Claire volunteered to 'help' you realize more of your Renegade powers. You think her course might be a little less painful than Lunatic's

The next time we see the chief and don't have other pressing concerns I want to ask

"So, I read the manual. Does making my house into a command center and giving me this 'assignment' have the ulterior motive of forcing people down my throat since Claire's reports put me on the equivalent of suicide watch for Overed sanity?"

qtg informed me that human interaction is a requirement of Overed sanity, and that is something we would know by now.

I think its time the Captain aknowledged he has to choose between his old nemesis: social interaction, or his creepy new neighbor: turning into a mindless monster. He doesn't have to like it though. I imagine passive aggression and sarcasm to be the norm. Although he might have a little more compassion for Ayase now, since he is being forced to interact with her; he has become the Claire.
>>
>>29443665
From what I understood the interaction requirement was tied directly to use of the Overed skills. Skills which these people seem hellbent on making the Captain use.
That is to say, for every day there is use of the skills there is a need for a sanity check utilizing known social contacts.
>>
>>29443665

I am become Claire, destroyer of charisma.
>>
>>29443047
"Yeah, you better get going. It's not nice to keep Bullets waiting."

You don't like the way Lunatic is smiling, but you pick yourself up off the ground and head toward Claire's training area. Every now and again, Claire has been calling you out to a small clearing at the edge of the local nature reserve. You're not sure you two should be in there, but every time, Claire has assured you that she has gotten permission for you to be here.

Riding on the bus still makes you nervous. You feel twitchy, and you can't keep from looking down the road for potential attackers. You feel like you're going to have troubles feeling safe on public transportation for a while yet. Eventually, you exit the bus and take the hiking trail down to the clearing you always meet in. Set at the base of the Island's single mountain, the nature reserve is mostly home to imported animals. As far as you know, this Island isn't home to any natural creatures, beyond migratory birds, frogs, and other small life.

As you push past the treeline, you see Claire waiting for you. As usual, she is sitting cross-legged on a large, smooth boulder.

"Welcome to my Sanctuary of the Wilds. Did you do as I asked and fast since yesterday? I know it must be a terrible burden on you to go without, but I need your desire at its peak today."
>>
>>29443665
technically, if we don't use the powers we don't need to worry about insanity
>>
>>29443832
While you haven't eaten, it was only because you forgot to eat dinner in your newly crowded house, instead seeking the comfort and safety of your room. Still, you nod to Claire. She claps her hands and tilts her head to the side.

"Driven mad with desire as you are, I can only imagine what great inner fortitude it is taking for you to refrain from devouring me on the spot. But,"Claire stand up on her rock and points her finger at you in a dramatic fashion, "From today forward, you shall no longer hold yourself back for my sake. Now come at me, I shall offer you a feast like none other."

You stare blankly at her, unmoving.

"...Moving along, I have released several wild animals into these woods. I have taken the liberty of marking those animals with a tag on their left ear. Hunt them down, then kill and eat them on the spot. Only eat those animals and none other, then come back to me. Any questions?"

>What animals are you supposed to hunt?

Because if you try to make us eat adorable little bunnies after waxing rapturous on the topic of fluffy fur, you've lost all credibility. And you didn't have much of that to start with.

What if the animals all have the virus
>>
>>29444078
No, we look like some big majestic alpha predator just waiting to break free to her. That's kind of the whole problem when dealing with her.
>>
>>29444124
That is the general assumption? I think most rocks have the virus. But only humans express super powers?
>>
>>29444124
Hell, it's been mentioned that rocks can in fact get infected with Renegade and display powers. Not sure how that works exactly.
>>
>>29444153
No, animals can develop powers, too. They always go straight to being monsters, though.
>>
>>29443854
"Is it not obvious, Captain? You are a very civilized, refined man. However, the powers of the Chimera require one to fully understand the untamed vigor and manly essence of the wild. To that end, I have provided this hunting ground for you, so that you might realize the predator within."

You continue to stare at Claire, bewildered and dumbfounded. After a moment or two, Claire turns to the side, covering herself with her arms.

"No, Captain, I don't mean that kind of predator. Now go. I'm afraid the animals I released would be somewhat invasive in this environment, and I would like to avoid a confrontation with the park rangers. Wouldn't you?"

You hear a cacophony of howls and roars in the distance. You snap your head around to look for the source, but all you see are is the sea of trees before you. When you return your gaze to the rock, Claire is already gone. You suppose you don't have much of a choice anymore. You head out into the wilderness to find these animals. You have second thoughts about eating them, but you need to make sure they don't cause you any more trouble at the very least.

After about five minutes of aimlessly mucking around in the reserve, your senses begin to pick up several sets of trails. There are two distinct trails here, with several animals each. From what you can tell, one group has many more members, but the animals aren't much larger than some of the dogs you've seen around town. The other group only has three or four members, but these animals are massive. Beyond this basic information, you can't find out anything more. Just what did Claire get her hands on? Who authorized this? ...Well, there's no turning back now that you've seen this.

Renegade Beings are sapient, and can come from all kinds of nonhuman things. They more easily turn into Gjaums, but do not always do so.

Some examples of things that Renegade Beings can form from: animals, plant colonies, plants, computer programs, rocks, and urban myths.
>>
>>29444227
You figure that you can't leave whatever is that large alone. You begin to follow the trail, stepping carefully to not make too much noise. Your pulse quickens as you start to wonder just what's out here for you. Each step you take becomes quicker and quicker, but at the same time disturbing less of the forest floor with each moment. You can feel your senses continue to sharpen.

A scent catches your attention. Yes, they're somewhere around here. There are three of them. All female. There's a hint of blood to their scent. They've killed recently, and whatever it was smells...delicious.

You shake your head. No, no. That's not what you're here for. You smack your head a few times to straighten out your scrambled thoughts. In that moment, you can sense them all around you. You turn your eyes and look. Though the canopy is blocking much of the light, and the tall grass and shrubbery gives them a natural blinder, your eyes can see them plain as day.

Lions.

Claire let lions out into this goddamn forest! What the hell!?

Their eyes are upon you. Each time you turn to look at one, the other two advance just a few more steps. It seems like they don't want to strike you head on. Could it be that they can tell what you are?

I thought Renegade Beings tended to be somewhat monster-y even when they're not Gjaum, though. Something about their inhuman mentality leading them to misuse their powers, at least as a human would see it. A coyote with the power to warp gravity is going to be pretty nasty even if it's still technically sane. And how is a sapient rock going to know what to do with its ability to manipulate blood?

>>
>>29444726
You can't let them sneak up on you any more than they already have. You focus on the lion behind you, trying to discern its exact position without giving yourself away. Ten meters...no, eight meters away. You can easily cross that distance in an instant.

You wait for it to just take one more step, then you move. Jumping into the air, you see the lions all take their own leaps, crashing into each other underneath you. You grab onto a branch above you and hang from it while you look at the large cats below. Seems their impact was as unexpected for them as it was for you, and they've landed poorly. Seeing an opportunity to end this without much further violence, you drop down on them from above.

You don't really want to hurt the animals, this isn't their fault, so you mind yourself and pull your punches. However, even when checked, it seems a Chimera's strength is not to be underestimated. With one blow, you send each of the animals rolling into a nearby tree. They're dazed for now, and it looks like they're having second thoughts about getting back up.
>>
>>29445246
You feel a little more at ease, relaxing for just a second. Then you feel the teeth sink into your leg. Before you know what has happened, you are dragged to the ground by many muzzles, each lined with sharp fangs. You shield your face and try to get a closer look at what's going on.

Wolves. There must be ten of them here, each darting in and out to take a snap at your limbs. They keep circling you, their eyes on your throat the entire time. This must be the other group you didn't follow. Were they just waiting for you to fight the lions this whole time? You try to move, but your tendons have already been severed. Even a Chimera must use its muscles to move...How are you going to get out of this?

Also, these are wolves. I don't think the amount of us that winds up in them would be enough to contain our consciousness. They're not going to swallow us whole, so we're not likely to get our nervous system in there.
>>
>>29445508
Oh, are the wolves tagged or is this pack native?
>>
>>29445578
All of these animals are tagged. Can't believe I forgot it twice!
>>
>>29445271
You haven't got much else working but your voice right now. You try to remember that time you shouted in class. How did you do that again? You summon up your feelings of frustration, anger, and most of all your sheer indignation at this situation and empty your lungs into the forest.

Startled, but undeterred, the wolves continue to dig at your flesh. Damn! No good! It's like they didn't understand it at all. You'll have to try harder. Maybe do it in a way they can understand? You think back to the start of this exercise. Those howls at the edge of the forest. How did they sound? Another tagged wolf rips off the fingers from your right hand. You're almost going numb from the pain, but then the memory hits you.

Every ounce of your mind is put towards imitating the howl of the wolf pack. The tone, the length, the volume. Everything must be perfect. Using up every ounce of your reserves you open your mouth and let out a howl.

The animals suddenly stop, jumping away from you and cowering on the floor. As you pull yourself off the ground, you can feel your body already beginning to knit itself back together. At the edge of your hearing, you hear a thump. You crane your head around to see Claire slumped against a tree. Her face still betrays no emotion, but you can see her knees shaking.

"Wonderful, Captain. Truly splendid."
>>
>>29445796
and that day, claire learned what an orgasm was
>>
>>29445796
With an unsteady hand, she reaches into her pocket and pulls out a phone. Placing it to her ear, she begins to speak.

"Yes, Chief. The exercise is finished. As expected, he has taken a wonderful step forward. Yes, you may dismiss them now."

Dismiss? You look over at the animals, and see them begin to...melt? Each of them takes on a crimson hue and wicks away into nothing but a pool of blood, which then soaks into the earth. You feel like you've seen this before....

After you put on a set of clothes that isn't ragged, you make your way back to the bus stop. Once you arrive, Claire decides to speak up.

"So, Captain. Are you ready to show me your new, divine nature? Or are you still bashful about displaying such things?"

Looks like the bus is about here, you shouldn't talk for too long...

It's not bashfulness, Claire. It's incomprehension. We don't know how to fully transform, yet. We can do claws, we can do roars, we can do a bit of armor. The Terrible Black Beast is not something we've learned, yet. And we really don't see how fighting some blood wolves was supposed to teach us that. Also, why did you have blood wolves?

Which is why, if we ever grow a tail, it should be the sharpest most painful looking instrument of death ever.

>Divine nature?

"Yes. Instructor Luna told me that the appearance of your claws and other features was due to you not having any sort of inspiration for your abilities. She told me that being a Chimera isn't as simple as reading about a feature in a book and copying it. Without the proper experience and mindset, your powers would have remained hazy and indistinct. She related it as something akin to a patron saint."

Then those animals were...

"Yes. I enlisted the aid of the Chief and told her to construct two noble beasts for you to pattern yourself after. While I personally rooted for the lion, it seems the Chief's personal favorite was more to your liking. This is fine too. Now then, please show me your new self. I am eager to feel...to see it."

You look at your hands for a moment, and consider bringing out your claws. The moment you do, you see brown hair begin to sprout from the back of your hands. Immediately, you push the thought aside and cancel the transformation. While it's true you do have a new mastery over your powers, you're not sure you like what came with it.

You stand up from the bench and wait for the bus by the road, ignoring Claire's further attempts to coax your transformation. You think about what you need to do next as your stomach grumbles. Wherever you go, you'll have to eat there.

>You shouldn't put off speaking to the Chief any longer. You can just grab something from the fridge
>You can't ignore your responsibility to go see Ayase. You can get something from the cafeteria at the hospital.

[ NOTE: You have gained new abilities. Mundane animals now defer to you out of fear and respect, although they do not like you. Additionally, you can use your voice to demoralize those who attack you. This modifies Guard action choices. As an unfortunate side effect, your therianthropy has changed shape. ]

Damn it, I liked being a xenomorph. You'll pay for this, Claire. Maybe we can expand this into further mutation, though. We're a Chimera, after all, no reason we can't hunt down insects to incorporate their features.

Anyway, let's go talk to Ayase. We're going to be bitter about the Chief collaborating with Claire's creepy fetish play, and be unwilling to see her just yet.

In fairness, you were never a Xenomorph. The black hide and claws were simply unadapted therianthropy. No matter how you developed your powers, it would change.
>>
>>29446607
All we transformed was our hands growing fur. If Therianthrope form is based on mental imprinting, our lack of full detail on our new form will let us change it more easily. It just has to be something that has fur. So let's get a pet. Specifically, a tarantula. We'll use that to move our alternate form to be furred and carapaced. Then we can just get into danger with hornets or something (we are in Japan, their hornets are terrifying) and get rid of the fur altogether.

You'd have to somehow create situations and learn abilities in which those specific features were necessary, keeping in mind the Chimera syndrome usually prefers to keep all of its features as an unholy mishmash instead of swapping out (hence the name).

>>
>>29446800
I just want a carapace covering all of it. Carapaces are cool, and help bring the whole aesthetic together no matter what parts you put on there. So let's go disturb a nest of Japanese Giant Hornets. Exoskeleton to imprint on, and a driving influence (OH GOD THE BEES THEY'RE IN MY EYES) to induce us to grow a protective covering. We may wind up with stripes as a result, though.
>>
>>29446845
I'd be fine with whatever color we turn out, we just need to get rid of the fur. Clair is crazy already and I don't want her encouraged.
>>
>>29446845
I think to get a carapace we need to set the Captain on fire and send him through the ducts. The fire should make his skin grow hard and fire proof and traveling through the ducts might change the arm and leg joints.
>>
>>29446845
eh, stripes can still be badass.

What if we had lunatic jump us during a marathon of the alien's series?

for acid blood, myabe try dunking ourselves in acid? that might actually create a coat that could resist it though, and since xenomorphs have to be capable of resisting their own blood....

Do not worry overmuch about setting up weird situations to try to create a xenomorph. You're already better than one.

>>
>>29447025
Didn't we already have carapace/exoskeleton from our first transformation? Can we recall that instead of exhibiting fur? I really want to cuntblock Claire.
>>
>>29447025
I thought it was safe to assume we were in pseudo-Japan, given the names, even if you said we weren't actually in the country. And I don't want to be a xenomorph. I just want to be carapaced instead of furred.

Also, if the adaptive process makes us assume traits from an animal capable of dealing with what we faced, why did we get howling and fur from being attacked by wolves? Well, wolf-shaped blood golems. Was it a sort of "become the alpha, wolf packs don't trouble the alpha" thing?
>>
>>29446426
After about an hour, the bus lets both of you off in front of the hospital. You don't like coming here, especially not on a business trip, but you made a deal to go see to Ayase's protection a few hours out of the day. You greet the receptionist, getting visitor passes for both you and Claire, and begin climbing up the stairs to Ayase's sterile, white room. As usual, the door to the room is closed, and you can hear her coughing her lungs out inside.

Unsure if now is a good time, you knock on the door.

"Yeah? Come in."

You let yourself in and almost wince. Ayase looks almost as bad as she sounds. All the color has drained from her face, her skin is slick and oily, and you can see bloody tissues held in her hand. You can see a bowl of practically untouched soup sitting on the tray to her side, and you can smell the traces of vomit from the toilet.

Ayase isn't a little worse. She's a lot worse.

You pull up a chair and sit down.

"It's good to see you again, Captain, Claire," She coughs into her tissues again,"I feel like you guys are the only ones seeing me anymore. I guess nobody likes a sickie."

Now comes the hardest part. How are you going to pass the time here.

You've never been good at talking to girls, and Ayase's...fragile condition makes you even more uneasy. Not wanting to upset her, you give Claire a pleading look. Claire gives you a knowing nod and pulls up next to Ayase.

"Manaka, I would like to engage in pleasant conversation about the boys in our class. Is there one you find 'totes adores'? Or perhaps one you find particularly revolting."

This isn't really conversation you should be here to listen to. You silently motion to Claire, trying to get her to change subjects or shut the hell up. After looking at your frantic pantomimes Claire once more nods in affirmation.

"Please exclude the Captain. I'm sure we both know it is unfair to compare the other boys in class to this wild stallion."

No, Claire! That is not what you were supposed to say at all! Despite that, Ayase giggles and puts on a smile. She sets the tissues aside for now and begins to chat with Claire about the relative standing of the other boys in your year. You begin to zone out, slipping into a haze where you are only partially aware of what is going on. Eventually, your stomach rumbles and you hear them stop. You open your eyes to see Claire and Ayase looking at you intently.

"Ah, I forgot about the Captain. He's been denying himself, so he must be completely mad with longing and--"

"You guys are funny," Ayase says, cutting Claire off, "Hey, Claire? Can you go get him something to eat for me. I would but...you know."

Claire agrees and leaves the room for the cafeteria. It occurs to you that you didn't ask for anything to eat, but Claire is long gone by the time you make that realization. Left alone with Ayase, you feel the air become incredibly awkward. Her normally bright personality, even with this illness, becomes very serious.

"Hey, so...I need to say something."

What? What now? You're not ready to hear anything heavy.

"Um...about the accident. I've been having a weird dream. I dreamt...you know...a monster saved me. Harry said it was probably because I hit my head, but I wanted to ask you since you were the only other one to make it out..."

You shake your head. You try to tell her that there's no way something like that could be true. Ayase seems relieved and puts your hand down, putting a smile on her face.

"Thanks. I thought I was losing it there or something. I guess Harry was right after all....Oh, did I ever tell you how I met Harry? I didn't know it, but he tells me that we used to be pen pals. Crazy, right?"

Ayase reaches into a bag and pulls out what looks like piles of letters.

"Strange thing, I don't even remember writing these, but Harry can recite them from memory. He's a good guy."

While she looks lost in thought, you hear another knock at the door. Expecting Claire, you get up to go open it, you nearly fall backward when you see Yeager.

"What are you doing here, slacker? I thought I told you--"

"Harry, please!"

Ayase tries to get up, but starts having a coughing fit. Immediately, Yeager pushes you to the side and runs over to Ayase. Too shocked by the situation, you just let them be while her fit subsides. Eventually, Yeager gets up and pours Ayase a glass of water.

"Harry, he's just being nice and visiting. Not many people come by any more so..."

"That's not the point. I thought I told the doctors not to let anybody see you."

"Harry!"

Now I want to stay and try to talk with him, maybe we can reach an agreement and help him win Ayase over.

>>
>>29448756
The probationary period last for eight years, so him and Claire would have been really young when they got scooped up. Easy to influence, especially if they have no one else to turn to.
>>
>>29448756
simple: young kids can get removed pretty easy. people forget their friend's from kindergarten.

older folks though have a lot of roots and connections. it simply isn't practical to hunt all of them down for mindwipe
>>
>>29448756
Well, both Yeager and Claire became Overeds when they were children. Maybe it's a lot harder for children to control their powers, so they need to be taken to a facility or something?
>>
>>29448290
You can't leave yet, you still have to wait at least another half hour before the next watchman comes. You try to be congenial and not piss Yeager off even more. You don't need to make your job any harder after all. You sit down in a seperate corner and let them know they're free to continue their visit, making the excuse you have to wait for Claire.

"Yamabushi, huh? She's been awfully interested in what's been going on around here. Don't you think she's being a bit too nosy?"

Well, yes, you couldn't agree more, but it's not something you can do about any more. You try to deflect the question, saying that Claire has her own reasons for doing what she does.

"Oh, does she? It wouldn't happen to be..." Yeager stares at you intently, "...related to her job, would it?"

Your stomach sinks. You knew that Yeager had dealt with the UGN before, but if he knows about Claire, that means he knows the UGN has been monitoring Ayase. With how unhinged this guy seems, you don't think that cluing him in to a government conspiracy would help him. You staunchly deny knowing anything about Claire's work or what it might be.

"That so? Hmmm.."

"Harry, please stop. Captain and Claire are good friends of mine. Don't be so jealous!"

"Who's jealous!?"

Yeager then turns his attention completely to Ayase and begins to fuss over her. Thank you, Ayase! Thank you so much! The remaining time flies by quickly, and you hardly even notice it when your phone alarm goes off. Quickly, you say your goodbyes and scramble out of the room.

Odd. Claire isn't back yet. Oh well, it's not a big deal, is it?

You try calling her phone a few times, but there's absolutely no response. Growing frustrated, you put your phone away and start to pace. You couldn't care less about this girl, but something inside you tells you to go looking for her. You open up your senses and begin prowling around the hospital. The smell of antiseptics, human waste, and body fluids is almost too much to bear and you struggle to keep yourself from vomiting. It becomes more and more difficult to find exactly where Claire might be. Even asking around, you encounter very few people who may have seen her, and all of them give contradictory directions. This isn't going as well as you planned. It bothers you to do so, but you concentrate fully on your sense of smell, trying to block out everything but Claire's signature scent of cinnamon candies.

...There!

You shut your eyes and begin to track on smell alone, shoving people aside in your haste. It's not like you to be in such a rush, but you have this terrible feeling like something has gone horribly wrong. Eventually, you climb a staircase and meet with a locked door. Judging from the smell, Claire should be right on the other side. And what's more, you smell blood. Lots of it. Panicking, you rip the door off its hinges and head outside.

You see Claire lying face-down in a large pool of blood. There are two pistols in her hands, and you can smell discharged gunpowder from both of them. All around her, you can see deep gashes and holes in the cement of the rooftop. Clearly, there was a fight here.
>>
>>29449343
You rush over to Claire and turn her over. Her front is completely soaked in blood, and you can see slashes rip through her clothing across her arms, chest, and legs. Instinctively, you pick her up and try to take her back inside, but as soon as you do, you notice something.

She's breathing just fine.

"Ah. Have I been discovered?"

You take a closer look at Claire. Certainly, she was injured, but any of her wounds now are nothing more than small cuts. In other words...

"Yes, I'm fine. I was merely hoping you'd appear and carry me off like a br--"

You drop Claire onto the concrete.

You crouch over Claire, glaring daggers at her. Sure enough, while there's evidence of horrific damage being done to her, all of her wounds are slowly closing before your eyes, leaving only bruises behind. You demand an explanation for what happened.

"Are you mad, Captain? I'm sorry. I only wished to feel your--"

Answers. Now.

"Yes, sir. I had obtained your food and was going to summon you here, to enjoy a meal while watching the setting sun, and perhaps feed you by hand. When I had laid out the picnic cloth and set our drinks aside," she motions with her hand over to what appears to be shredded plaid cloth and a few broken cups,"I was set upon by an unknown assailant."

You get up and examine the scene. Besides what Claire has lost, you don't see much of any blood which means that...

"Yes, it wasn't Diablos. Unfortunately, the assailant was covered head to toe in sharp, black spines. I struggled to deal any damage to them at all. Their spines were layered, you see. Each time I shot one, it broke off and revealed another spine underneath it. Unfortunately, I do not have the regeneration or bodily resistance of a Chimera as you do, and they easily incapacitated me once it became a close-quarters battle. Just as I thought they were going to finish me off, something caught their attention and they left with all haste. Thirty minutes later, you arrived and took me into your gentle arms. This concludes the report."

This is just too much for you. You tell Claire to get back on her feet and head home with you.

"Like this, Captain?"

Claire turns around once for you, reminding you that her uniform has been slashed to pieces.

"Therefore, I require your own shirt and jacket."

Claire holds out her hands expectantly and you begin to take off your jacket until you realize something...Couldn't she just fix her own uniform? Or make a new one?

"...Tee hee. I forgot."

Like hell she did! Claire taps her uniform and black sand seeps up from the ruined pieces of the rooftop and weaves itself into thin strands of cloth that go on to repair Claire's uniform. Not just repair, it looks like she also cleaned, ironed, and touched up the colors. After she finishes, she goes about making superficial repairs to the rooftop before turning back to you.

"Let's go, Captain. The Chief will want to hear about this."

You imagine she will.

--

"What!? Yeager has been visiting Ayase?"

The Chief seems furious. While her face remains its usual composure, there is a sudden coldness to it that makes you shiver. You make a mental note to never cross the Chief.

"And after I specifically forbade him from seeing her. I was hoping to keep this between him and myself, but apparently I can do so no longer."

The Chief stands, her butlers crowding around her, bringing stamps and pads, ink pens, and many, many documents. The Chief begins doing a flurry of paperwork, moreso than you've seen in an entire lifetime. You hear a big sigh. Following the sound, you can see Lunatic High in the other room shaking her head.

Putting this current beaurocracy issue behind yourself, you notice that Claire is putting something down on the kitchen table. A familiar smell of baked brown sugar and chocolate reaches your nose, and you remember just how hungry you've been all day. Immediately, you sit down at the table and inspect what she's made.

"Ah, Captain. I have made cookies for you. I wanted to make sure you ate something today."

That's actually very considerate of her. You nod and take a cookie off the tray and bite down.

...Ugh. It's awful. It smelled alright, but there's this grimy, awful taste to the cookie. Not only that, but the texture is all wrong. It's all you can do to not grimace as you swallow the bite of cookie. Just what the hell did she put in these?

"Ah, you noticed? Because of Captain's recent changes, I decided to replace the flour in the cookies with bonemeal. It's not to my tastes, but I know you enjoy it. Right? You enjoy it right?"

Claire forces the rest of the cookie down your throat before you can respond. Stuck on the awful taste, you don't realize how much more she keeps shovelling into your mouth until you find it hard to close your jaw. Claire continues to look at you blankly for a few seconds, pondering the situation.

"Go on. Finish eating."

She pinches your nose. Shit, you can't breathe! You struggle, trying to remove her, but you're just so hungry and out of breath that you can't shake her right now. You're just going to have to eat these awful, terrible creations.

...she could have at least brought you milk or something to wash them down.
>>
>>29451084
After you finish the horrid meal, the Chief slaps the table with a stack of papers half as tall as she is.

"There, it's been settled. As soon as these papers pass in front of the Chairman's desk tomorrow, Harold Yeager will be a wanted man!. I cannot believe I had to do this, and in such a time of crisis as well!"

The Chief turns her gaze to you and pokes you in the chest.

"And you shall help us! Consider it an honor to join me on this matter. We cannot have such troubles while False Hearts lurks our streets."

You don't really--

"That's the end of it. I shall hear no objections! Now, I must rest and prepare myself. Before I go, you may ask myself or Instructor Lunatic High something, but if you don't have anything to say..."

Memory is a fickle thing. If she lives, she will probably just accept the "reality" of what happened: there was no monster that pulled her from the burning wreckage of a bus. After all, that's impossible.

We don't have to have chief alter her memory, she'll do it to herself.
>>
>>29451112
You decide to ask her if Ayase's memory problems have anything to do with how Yeager isn't allowed to contact her. You relate how she didn't remember writing Yeager letters and the weird dreams she is having about the bus accident. The Chief looks surprised, but then sits pulls up a chair and sits down.

"I suppose I should be straightforward. Eight years ago, it's true that Harold Yeager was writing to Manaka Ayase. This is not particularly noteworthy."

The Chief begins to fiddle with her paperwork. You thought it was already perfectly put together, but she insists on straightening the edges out, over and over again.

"However, Yeager suddenly developed his Overed powers. Before the UGN could find him, he wrote a series of letters to Ayase about his condition and his new talents. When the UGN discovered this, we had to wipe her memories. However, since the letters occurred over a series of months, we had...difficulties covering this incident up. We eventually were forced to destroy any memories Ayase had of Yeager and his letters."

The Chief gets up.

"I was not in charge of this, but I'm told Yeager was furious. While he was initially going to join the UGN, he immediately withdrew from the program and maintained as little contact as possible for the remainder of his probationary period. That spined figure who attacked Bullets is consistent with Yeager's abilities. He must still carry a grudge. In any event, this is inexcusable."

You have only one more question. Why do you have to help?

"That is...well...Most of our agents are on the search for Diablos right now. Even Lunatic High is on duty tomorrow, and Claire cannot leave you. Therefore, only I would be on hand to arrest Yeager. You can understand how I'd wish to have back up."

Right. You get up from the table, smile at the Chief, and go to your room. You fall face first on your bed and sleep.

((Break for dinner. Like before, I will come back for more.))

You're still tired. The Chief woke you up before the sunrise and shepherded you down to the hospital. She informs you on the way that Yeager hasn't left the premises since you last saw him, so Warding will need to be used in order to capture him. And 4:00AM is the only time in which the hospital has no scheduled operations. All other emergencies have been routed to other clinics, so you should be alone.

Not that it matters to you. Hopefully, this is something the Chief can handle on her own.

You enter the hospital, and immediately, you feel the queasy feeling of Warding pass over you. You look over to the Chief and Claire. Each of them have a stone cold expression that puts you on edge. Is this what would happen to you if you tried to get your life back?

"Pay attention, Wild Card. We will first attempt to bring Yeager in peacefully. If this fails, we are relying on you to restrain him. You are the most physically capable among us at the moment," The Chief puts a hand on your shoulder,"So if something goes wrong, it's all up to you."

Grumbling, you nod and follow them up the flights of stairs to Ayase's room. Oddly, you still hear coughing from inside. The Chief and Claire position themselves on the other side of the door and beckon you to open it for them.

>Open it slowly. No need to get excited.

She's not actually awake, the Warding can't stop her from coughing because coughing is a property of being sick, not of being conscious.

You slowly turn the knob and push the door open. It swings gently before lightly tapping the wall. You can see the moonlight filtering through the curtains and onto Yeager's form, sitting in front of the bed. Normally, this wouldn't be enough light to see, but your eyes...feel like they're adjusting. You can see the room with perfect clarity.

Yeager doesn't appear to be armed right now, but that doesn't mean anything. He's too busy tending to Ayase who is...drinking a glass of water? How is she awake? You thought the Chief used Warding to make this go as smoothly as possible! You look over to your companions and see the same look of confusion flash across the Chief's face. Undaunted, she steps into the room ahead of you and begins to speak.

"Yeager. You must know why we are here. Come with us quietly and everything will end peacefully."

Ayase coughs, then leans over.

"What? Is that a nurse, Harry? I'm having a hard time seeing right now. What's she talking about....Harry?"

Yeager gets up and turns around. He's looking the Chief right in the eyes, and you can see his fist quivering.

"Noble Blood...Is that still your codename? Enjoying your position as Chief?"

"I'll not enjoy it if it requires me to use force. Yeager, why did you come here? And more importantly, how is she still awake. We know she is not an Overed."

Yeager laughs, "You know why I came here. It was to look after Manaka. All of this was to see Manaka. And she's awake because I've been helping her..."

Harry produces a pill bottle from his pocket. Ayase, still unaware of you, tugs on his jacket.

"Harry, what have you got my medicine for?"
>>

>>
>>29453096

"These pills contain large amounts of Renegade Material. In a normal human, it allows them to operate under the effects of warding. Of course, it has some...side effects," He points to the bloody tissues by the bed, "But more importantly, it's going to activate the Renegade strain within her. We'll be able to live together. Without you taking her mind away!"

"Yeager, it's obvious she's not going to survive this! Stop now before this becomes permanent damage!"

"No! She'll be fine! I know it! Right, Manaka?"

"H-harry. You're scaring me..."

"It'll be fine. It'll be fine. We're going to...have a chat outside. Why don't you go to sleep now?"

You suddenly feel the Warding increase. While Ayase doesn't immediately pass out, you see her eyes become heavy.

"Yeah, that sounds...good..."

Yeager puts the pills in her hand and turns to you, raising his fist. A glove of black iron surrounds it, covered in wicked spikes.

"Let's do this. I'm not going back peacefully. Want to head to the rooftop again?"

>>
I'm reading the book. Is there any reason to be a Crossbreed but only take powers from one of your Breeds?
>>
>>29453112
You agree that you need to take this fight somewhere safe. You step aside and let Yeager start leading your group towards the upper level. You still can't fathom why he is going through these lengths for a pen-pal, and one that's almost a decade old.

"I'm sure you heard it from Noble Blood--your Chief back there. I don't stand out at all. Nothing about me is worthy of remembering. Hell, my parents even had trouble picking me out in a crowd. But when I wrote to Manaka, she remembered everything I told her. For once, I mattered."

He opens the door to the roof, and walks ahead of you, black sand gathers underneath him as he walks, creating spiked boots to go along with his gloves.

"And when I got these powers, she was in awe of me. She just couldn't stop writing me letters, asking me to send her pictures, tell her stories, mail her little bits of my metal. And then...then it stopped. The UGN found us. I tried to write her after that, but all I got was a letter from her parents telling me to not bother them. I was back to being nobody again, and sworn to keep secret the only thing about me that was special."
>>
>>29453498

He stomps his foot and in a flash, he's encased in thick layers of spiked, black armor. You realize now what Claire meant about being unable to hurt him. That stuff looks like it would be hard for even you to pry apart.

"Screw that! I'm not going back to that! I've been waiting for this for close to ten years now, and I'm not letting you UGN morons take any more of her memories!"

Those pills are killing Ayase...where did he even get them?

"I'll give you three guesses. The first two don't count. But enough of this bullshit, let's get this over with. I'll take you all on!"

Yeager raises his mailed fist and slashes the ground. A wave of spikes erupts from his gauntlet and flies at you, each one sucking up mass from the roof as it hurtles towards you. Now, mere inches away from you, they're the size of traffic cones. What are you going to do?
