You're Miranda Rook, holder of a doctorate in mathematics and (So-close-you-can-taste-it) PMC.

Your boss, Mr. Low has gone missing. His place has been broken in to. Your place wasn't actually broken in to, the door just didn't shut properly, but at some point somebody took Andy's laptop, but you've gotten it back. The security guard that returned it is very friendly for some reason. Made sure you got a nice swanky new suite. Everything was so shiny in here. They really didn't want you mad after the breach of security you guess. Still, he might know something about the break in. You turn away from contemplating the shining black fridge door back to the man. His ID tag, "Francis Black."

"Oh, a while longer. We'll see. Say, I heard there was a break in. Do you know anything about that, er," You stumble at the end. You wanted to say, 'Mr. Black' but that might be a bit too forward and what if security guards have a title is there a title you're in London they have a pretty strict social strata oh crap you're lingering now now you've got this dangling end and oh there he's talking now shwew.

His brow furrows, and he scratches at his chin, "Heh, uh, the break in? I wouldn't think about that ma'am, these sorts of things happen. Don't you worry none, Met's the best police force in the world. Nothing gets past them."

Right. Well, he's a dead end. As you're raising your hand to dismiss him though, he suddenly speaks up, "Though, uh, begging your pardon for bringing this up ma'am, but I couldn't help but, well, wonder."
"About?" You raise an eyebrow. Francis starts wringing his hands.
"Well," He frowns, "You're Mr. Low's coworker, right? Mr. Low being the one that held the apartment of course."
"Why are you asking?"
"Well. Something that I saw in there is all."

Francis is scrutinizing you now. Something about the look in your eye worries you a tad.

>"Yeah, I worked with him."
>"Mr. Low? No clue."
>"None of your business."

"I worked with him, couldn't tell you much about him.

Why? What'd you see in there?"
>>
Working with him. Writing.
>>
Remember people, do not use Andy's laptop, someone took it and I hope we're computer savvy enough to realize that it's not safe anymore.

And I'm looking forward to explaining what a quantitative analyst is to Kooji.
>>
>>29671770
Yep, we should maybe spill something on the laptop and accidentally kill it, then return it to him, say that our room got broken into by some drunk and they caused the damage and he should get a new one
>>
>>29671473
>>"Yeah, I worked with him."

I thought we already did that when we first got it

and if what we think has happened, a kernel level rootkit installed, we don't want to touch anything sensitive on it, lest we give away corporate data to competitors
>>
"Yeah, I worked with him."
"Hm," Francis scratches at his chin at that news, "What do you do miss?"
"Finance- look, what is this about?"
"Well," He looks about conspicuously, "Don't tell nobody I mentioned this, but he had some weird stuff in his room," He looks at you for prompting. You do your best to give a withering look. Mr. Black looks away again, "Bunch of shredded paper in big black garbage bags, half burnt. They'd gotten wet though."

He was shredding some things then. Or taking some things that'd been shredded.
"Could you read anything on them?" You start mumbling, thinking, "Anything like math or-"
"Well, that point there were some investigatory sorts coming in, so I didn't want to get in the way. I know my place ma'am, and it's not sticking noses in other people's business," He says, speaking to you about your missing coworker's private possessions.

God, this deal was going to be a disaster. Maybe you made the right move getting in to the PMC business? You sigh, shake your head.

"Well, thank you Mr. Black, thank you for your help-" You start making shooing motions, but apparently there's a language barrier as the tall man still hangs around. You eventually have to cough, and pointedly bring up just how tired you are and oh goodness just look at the time. Mr. Black finally gets a clue, and nods at that, "Oh, oh! Sorry ma'am. Here," He sidles to the counter, laying a crisp card down flat, "Number for hotel security. Won't have to ask another tenant for help in the future, you have my number right there."
"Future?" You raise an eyebrow, grab his card. Swanky place if even the security get nice thick cards.
"Futu-Oh, oh, sorry, y'know, not that it will happen, but just in case-" Black blushes at that, rubs the back of his head, "Right, bloody right, don't want that- I'll, I'll just be going then?"

You give a firm nod. Finally, the security guard wanders out.

>>
>>29672013
>Embezzle.

Our boss was shredding documents. We're a financial wizard, we know that when a company like Frontier pulls something like this things are going to end badly.

Stock check first, it's probably a good thing to know.

Don't use Andy's laptop, it's compromised, hide the data trail of embezzlement as well as we can, don't let it get tracked back to us, we're a financial wizard, we can hopefully bounce money around well enough to hide where it came from and where it went. Though if we can make the trail lead to Low that could throw some heat off of us. Don't make it lead instantly to him, make it look like the trail was covered.

Also, while we're in there check the accounts and see if anyone else has been moving money around.

>>

Well considering all the other prospects, you have a point, but let;s get the least asshole of the bunch
>>
Guys, we're embezzling based off the hearsay of a security guard.

Shouldnt we confirm it first? Maybe you know, check the documents?

The investigation might have been of someone Low is investigating against.
>>
>>29672238
thats why I seconded checking stock and trying to find andy

we're completely cut off from pretty much the rest of the company because we can't get in touch with Low
>>
>>29672238

Ye, why embezzle?

If we're a financial wizard, getting a job is NOT A PROBLEM with any other firm but good luck doing that when you've been caught stealing.
>>
>>29672212
Dang, I got here late.

I was going to say that we should hold off on the embezzling until A) we can make the money back in a short amount of time and nobody will notice it's missing and B) when the company isn't about to be under investigation due to Low's shenanigans.
>>
>>29672238
I think we'll still check the stock, and gather as much information as we can when we access the corporate accounts. But we have no way to contact Mr. Low, I doubt Andy knows anything about what's going on.
>>
>>29672342

>>

>>
>>29672491

>>
>>29672538
You know, ending up as a part-time money launderer could be good business. Offer financial services to the businessmen, illegal or legal, who we work with in a mercenary capacity.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who need hired guns who also need money discretely moved around, we charge a percentage off the top and it's all snazzy.

Also, we can make investments based on the economic effects we predict from actions in the war economy and mercenary business. We'll also want to build a contact network to keep us up to date on this sort of thing.
>>
>>29672613
laundering and embexling are two entirely different things
>>
>>29672628
Money that you embezzle you tend to need to launder somehow. You don't want unexplained money showing up.

For embezzling we'll probably set up false trades scattered throughout the system, stock and arbitrage trades are common as hell in the records so sneaking some extra ones shouldn't be the hardest thing.
>>
>>29672613
you have to be on the inside of a company to embezzle. which is what i assume you're referring to.

Laundering on the other hand is a very simple process that requires very little mathematical skills. anyone who can start a fake buisness can do it.
>>
>>29672613
Warlords and pirates and the like generally don't care if their money is "clean"
>>
So whats our end goal here? World Domination? The take over and Unification of Africa? World Peace?
>>
>>29672774
Yes and no, they do a lot of transactions where they don't give a single fuck if the money is clean.

But I could still see them wanting clean money for their legitimate investments and transactions, they often have a lot of money and it's often safer to keep that money in legitimate accounts and shares.

Also, syndicates and organized crime organizations care an awful lot about their books being kept straight. A lot of organized crime groups are hit for fraud and tax evasion when they can't pin the violent crimes or distribution on them.
>>
>>29672862
Work out pent up frustration and see what happens.
Like most hobbys
>>
>>29672862
Enjoy the sheer power and thrill that having a group of armed men at our command gives us.

Get laid, preferably with a rugged mercenary on a giant pile of money.

Build our fortune and expand our investments to key areas to be able to alter the market for our benefit.
>>
>>29672870
Crime organizations don't really hire PMCs, warlords do, pirates do, shady government organizations do, but crime syndicates usually do it themselves. They also usually launder their own money, as it isn't that hard to do.
>>
Shredding documents. Never a good sign.

Where was Low? For that matter, where was Andy? And Andy's friends those...Guys. Crap, what's his name. This is probably the first time you're unhappy it's the weekend. You check your cell phone. Nothing from Laura. Nothing from Deacon. Last text was Andy freaking out about the break in. Just you, in this great big old suite.

Man, this suite sure is big. The kitchen was the size of your dorm room back in Chicago University. You drum your fingers on the counter top, look at Andy's laptop. Probably shouldn't use that. It's probably got viruses. Probably the microphone's on, recording everything you say and when you open on the laptop the camera will turn on and take pictures of you from an awful angle and the board of the Rich Assholes Incorporated would meet and have a powerpoint presentation just to laugh at your hideous nose hairs and-

You pick up Andy's laptop, take it to the spacious closet, shut the door and go back to your own laptop.

You check your stocks again. Frontier Finance was still okay. It's the weekend though, so who knows. No mention of things happening on any news sites- wait. Local underground news website mentions that 'American Businessman Goes Missing, Anonymous Source in Met Speculates Soho Sex Ring Scandal.' That was fast.

The inside of the article is a mess of speculation, all tying back to the Baltic currency crisis, and a meandering condemnation of Wall Street style capitalism and gratuitous American Psycho references. The comments section isn't much better. One cryptic and long comment chain kept talking about your model in all caps. 'THE MODEL is a replacement of god for these fools,' 'Their MODEL would tell them to kill for twenty cents more they'd do it,' 'THE MODEL is what americans hope to make the world march to.'

Nope, no mention of you. That aggravates you a little. They heard the word 'model' and that sounded scary so that's all they're talking about.
>>
>>29672889
>>29672909
pooy, i was hoping for world domination
>>
Right. Enough of that. Time to log in to your company's intranet.

Your credentials as an analyst doesn't lend you much power over finance, annoyingly enough. You get to check on your model though, which is always fun. The vaunted company replacement for sharepoint is, as usual, a laggy piece of ass, but your maintained model is there, in all of it's glories. A pile of numbers and an ugly as sin front end that spews out numbers that take some serious work to interpret.

Curiously, somebody is logged in to see the model. Actually, going by the tag "MDeacon," it's your CFO. So, he wasn't arrested? But, as soon as you're logged in, he's logged out. Frustrating. You open the interoffice email client, but, predictably, it crashes.

Model predicts explosive growth in China's Xinjiang province, and central Asia. Recommends dumping coal and oil. Increased purchases from National Atomics subsidiaries recommend purchase. Dumping Heckler and Koch, shift to Uralvagonzavod.

You feel an almost maternal pang of worry at your model. To a certain extent, it was a living thing, the way you imagined it. It had a beginning where it was almost formless, a set of mathematical simulations that would just crunch and spit out raw data. In the tender embraces of you and your team's, it refined so that there was something concrete there. Then, it grew up and was put to use by Frontier Finance, and suddenly it was out of your reach, in the hands of those dirty awful traders. And judging from what your model was focused on, it was in a dark place, focusing on firearms purchases and political instability for opportunities. It was starting to narrow down, much to your disappointment. Frontier Finance had always been concerned with the developing world after all. Part of every developing world were those profitable birth pangs, and that's what it seemed the traders had been tweaking the model to predict.
>>
But, like every living thing, soon your model would die. Either collapsing under the weight of all these bandaids and modifications or simply being left behind as the markets changed more than it could adapt, sure enough your model would die and be consigned to the dustbin soon, unrecognizable from those simple, beautiful equations you made in your halcyon days.

You're starting to depress yourself. Christ, you need to sleep. Embezzlement.

You poke around for holes and permissions in the intranet you can push. You're trying your best to be careful though- Derek, despite looking like an overgrown garbage dump had some brains in his mass of filth. He'd done his best to close out the usual entrances for an overstepping employee- for you, this'll be hard. You're not a trade after all, you're not supposed to touch a cent. Sure, you can get the company to comp your purchase (You've been making good use of that already) but, for any significant money? That'd be something else.

You might be able to convince corporate to give you money flat out, but that'd require somebody to be in the office, unlikely at this hour.

Andy's credentials are by your side. You could log in as him. But... Because you're logging in on a different machine, Derek would have to be informed. He'd need to give the permission for Andy to access the intranet on a different machine, that is yours. At least you can trust Derek to do that. He was on call for half the week, and the other half of the week was covered by Peter, who didn't know what he was doing and was just Derek's friend, so he'd call up Derek anyway.

Or you could use Andy's laptop. As insecure as it was...Well, maybe that'd make a good cover?

You slump in your chair. Embezzling was hard for a new quantitative analyst.

I'm not feeling too much in the way of corporate loyalty to Frontier right now, it feels like they're heading towards a collapse, and they took our baby away from us. I mean sure, we're also getting into the private war business, but they're still jerks.

If we used Andy's laptop and his credentials we'd be potentially exposing corporate access to whoever compromised it. But we might be dropping the company anyway.

If we did this as Andy could we be reasonably assured that once we get the money out of there on his laptop that we can switch back to our own laptop, and through no relation to the company networks move the money from wherever we put it to somewhere secure without attracting attention?

Probably not for the best to let an unknown third party know when you were engaging in illegal activity. Very important thing about crimes, was to minimize the amount of people that knew about it.

Regrettably, now you had to talk to Derek. You grab Andy's credentials, and then log in as him. Sure enough, there goes the alert. "You're trying to access FronFinNet from a new access point. You're currently registered to machine '5318008', do you want to register on this new machine?"

Yes. The alert window disappears for a moment, then pops back up.

"You require administrator permission. Contact administrator?"

Yes.

"Administrator emailed. If this is an emergency, please contact via phone."

You mash on your phone, dialing Andy, and it rings and it rings and oh right, Derek tried the same thing, fuck. He's not going to answer- Facebook! Facebook is the way!

And Andy's profile shows him as not being friends with Derek. Is Derek even on Facebook? God, you don't remember his last name either. But, okay, Andy's friends are all shitty people.

Argghhhh. You have no proof that they're even friends. What if he's bluffing?

"No time! Did you get Derek anything for Christmas?"
"Wha- Derek? Fuck that! He's an asshole! Was there even a gift exchange? Whatever, that shitass king of anal retentive assholery can fuck off- wait, Miranda? Why are you calling me?"

So. Derek must know you're a fake. Or maybe he doesn't. Maybe Andy saw that Derek was calling and pretending not to be there. Numbers are so much better than people.

You lean back and allow yourself to breathe. You're bad at this shit. If you weren't talking to somebody you knew, you'd probably have been found out. There's gotta be better ways to do this stuff.

You log back out, and back in, and then after a prompt asking you to name the computer (You went with '5318009' after his first name), you're in.

The trader's UI is depressingly similar to your own, except that they have a nice big window for trade tracking, and quite a bit more money to budget. Something on the order of $250,000. The fact that a moron like Andy had that much money he could just toy with depressed you. He probably had a lot more socked away in his own accounts as well.

Well, you've gotten your great leap forward. You're not prepared to launder or cover your tracks as it is though. You take a quick in Andy's work email, and don't see anything of interest.

Anything else?

>>29674745
I mean to drop this idea entirely.
We also logged in as Andy from our laptop just after we snooped around with our account. He KNOWS both of them logged on from the same machine. They can see it from the other end.

Also, we are not smart enough to embezzle. Why some of you think that because we are genius at one thing we are great at others? You don't NEED a PhD to embezzle. You need certain knowledge and skills, things that I assume we lack.

Let's forget about this entirely. We could still get in contact with Deacon and demand explanation for what the heel is happening.
>>
>>29674833
>we are not smart enough to embezzle
...

you really underestimate what it takes to embezzle money, the hard part is getting away with it, which is where being a financial math genius helps

and also, this whole plan is insurance in case the bosses are fucking around with the company and are going to sink the ship, if they are not doing that, then we're fine, and we stay aboard, but if its going down, we're not going to get ruined because of them
>>
>>29674756

>>29674890

I don't think we ever learned to embezzle and cover or tracks in college. Even if some skills overlap, This is something we have never done before. And we already made too many mistakes. By talking with Deacon, asking Andy for Xmas present, etc. There are already tracks leading to us.
>>

You need to chill bro, your over thinking things

and besides, even if shit hits the fan, we just need to finalise the contract to buy the PMC and we're set, we can remake our model and use it get profit from our PMC's business
>>
The phone bounces on your table again, and you snatch it up. Andy, but more importantly, it had a low battery warning. You plug it in as you talk to the trader.

"Hi Andy-"
"Why'd you ask about me and Derek? Did he tell you anything?"
"What? No, no, just some computer trouble- he was mentioning that you got him something."
"And he's LYING."
"And he was lying, yes. That was the point. Just curious."
"He hasn't mentioned anything else?"
"No."
"Nothing at all?"
"Nothing."
"Oh. Hey, uh, do you still have my laptop?"
"Yeah. You want it back?"
"Huh? Well. Not right now. I just can't lose another fucking laptop. Seriously. I might lose my job."
"How many did you lose?"
"So, about Low...Where do you think he is?"
"Low? How am I supposed to know?" You note he was quick to change the subject, but at least this was something relevant, "He mentioned Deacon being arrested, but I haven't seen anything in the news."
"Me neither. Do you know where Low was on Friday?"
"No," No, you were busy coming to grips with your loneliness and buying a PMC on a whim.
"He was supposed to drink with us. But, he never showed. Think it's related at all?"
"Probably not. He called me then, wondering where I was."
"It's a bit of a mystery. Hopefully he'll come back. Police are already looking for him. Got a talking to from an inspector or something, wanted to know where he was."
"Any clues?"
"Think they'd tell me? No. Say, me, Neil, and Harris were going to go out tomorrow wann-"
"No."

You end the call, leave the phone to charge. Take off your glasses leave them on the end table, and slip in to silk sheets. You close your eyes and try to sleep.

You don't succeed. You can't help but think of your model. The one that Frontier has is very sophisticated. Very. You were its mother, but you had a lot of help. A great deal of computing power, a team of interns, and Dr. Cardwell.

You lay in bed for a time, before eventually, with a mumbled curse, you grab a pencil and a notepad, and start writing.
>>
When you wake up, it's two in the afternoon. Lazy Sunday. You moan, and roll over on to a bed of torn pages. Another one of those nights. You get in to a minor panic scooping up the notes- modifications from the Frontier model. You can hardly remember why you started on this, but you've got notes a plenty now.

You sit up in bed, and check your phone. One missed message from Deacon, 10:00AM. Wait, that would have been 4:00 in the morning his time.

You bring up the phone, listen to the message.

"Doctor Rook? Doctor Rook?" Some clicking. What sounds like some traffic, and a great deal of buzzing noise, some static, then, "Doctor Rook?" A few more clicks. One. Two. Three. Then all noise cuts out. Dead silent.

End of message.

Well, you've had weirder messages left on your machine. At least this one was free of heavy breathing. And bonus, he remembered you had a phd. Maybe you should walk around with a labcoat, maybe people would call you doctor then. Dr. Cardwell did that. Then again, he was always an odd one.

With a last stretch, you order room service, and start collating your notes. A model for a PMC. To be there before the customer even knows you need them. You snort, shake your head. You can be pretty crazy.

Still, maybe the Captain would like it. Aside from that, being elbow deep in your profession of choice might be a relief.

Let's see, what else do you have to do? The mystery of Mister Low was already being handled by the police. Andy was a jerk. Deacon apparently was leaving drunken messages on your machine at 4:00AM. And you guess you could fly home, but you can't, you've gotta hire some mercenaries.

So why not work on this problem?

I kinda want for Miranda to keep having normal life, maybe in other company if this one goes down. Don't want to make her a criminal and needing to flee to some 3rd world shit hole with the help of her PMC.
There is no reason to commit a crime. Miranda is not wanting for money, she never did. She had enough money to buy the PMC, enough savings to live for at least half a year which is more than enough time to find another job.
We shouldn't do something that might come back to bite us in the ass later on. Yeah, even if the company is going under.

>>
You'd just picked up the pencil again when the thought crosses your mind- you were out late last night for a reason. Right. Tailor. Suit. Dress.

You groan, roll your eyes. And you were so comfy too. Oh well. The floor is too cold for your preference, so you end up doing a hopping tip toe to get to the bathroom as you wriggle out of your smelly stank clothes. A nice warm bath is all you really need to be up to muster the courage to go out. There's all sorts of weird bottles by the rim of the bath. Lot of French names and weird colored and sweet smelling liquids. Bath salts too. You have no idea how to use them, so you root about them until you find something that claims to be shampoo, and pour it on your scalp. It's ridiculously warm in the tub, and soon you're again dozing at the edge of consciousness, but with some force of great iron will, you rinse out your hair (A lot easier now that it's shorter) and rise from the tub.

After shaving your legs and pits (Another tribulation. God damn genes.), and putting the weird stuff that the salon gave you in to your hair until it looks halfway like what it was supposed to be last night, you pull on your one not shitty suit, the gray one with the skirt, grab your laptop and notes (You're not going to let it get stolen) and walk for the door. On the way out you grab your phone and dial Deacon.

No response. You leave a message.

It doesn't take you long to find it. You were tempted to try to find a classic tailor's some wizened old man in an out of the way alley that'd dispense pearls of wisdom around the needles he had in his teeth, but seeing as you had a meeting two days from now, you really didn't want to deal with the wait times. Not that you met wizened old tailors often, but you assumed they'd be the sorts to take their time with a suit.
>>
No, you go for a high end, more corporate store. Very stark place this. Lot of black and white, and prissy looking mannequins that shared the same expression of wondering if they'd left the oven on. A place that promised style and beauty at an industrial pace.

"A woman's formal business suit must not be erotic," You're not entirely sure when this woman started lecturing you. Nor when you agreed to stand about in a darkened room in your underwear. She's pacing about you with a measuring wrapping it around you, stepping back, holding it taut against arms and legs and stomach, "A woman's business suit- stop sucking it in," You sigh, let out your gut, there's a nod, "Not as fat as most Americans," she says. Like that's a compliment.

"A woman's formal business suit," She repeats again, "Must be all angles. Like a.. stealth plane," What? "It must control the gaze, hard lines going out to the extremities, enthroning the hands, the typical seat of power, or when walking, emphasize forward motion. The closest thing to humanity, in a woman's business suit must be in the face," The woman, short and with a severe pony tail the color of steel hanging down her back, looks up at you and frowns, "For that is the domain of the one wearing it. If they do not demand respect with their expression, respect they shall not attain with the finest of clothes."

She stares at you. Seems to be waiting for a response. You laugh a bit nervously, shrug, "Right. I'll keep that in mind."
She grunts at that, then with a few more harsh measurements, steps back and nods, "Right. Like a cowboy."
"Cowboy?"
"Cowgirl," She dismisses the question with a wave, "You must wear either white, or black. Nothing in between."
"Really?"
"Severe colors, my dear. You must be severe."

You're not a fan of fashion. Everyone seems way more in to it than you are. You also aren't looking forward to the chess jokes. But if you have to choose...

Feeling a bit frazzled, you totter out of the madwoman's shop and make for a taxi. You direct him to drive you to your hotel. You try calling Deacon again. Still no response. Experimentally, you call Low's phone. No response either. You groan. Then get a call from Andy.

"Hey, Miranda? Do you still have my laptop?"

Oh, right.
"Yeah, yeah, I do Andy- uh, actually forgot it at the hotel," You glance out the window, "Where are you at?"
"Right now? Well, er," Andy hems a bit, and then whispers in to the phone, "I found Low's car."
"Where?"
"It's outside of some tenement in, uh, a place called Catford? This investigator I hired just found it. And I'm here now. There's, there's this big cat statue. Heh."
"Catford?" You don't know that place. Oh well, "Was Low around?"
"Well, that's what I'm about to check out."
"Why did you call me then?"
"Low's going to want to know where my laptop is, right?" He laughs. His laugh has hit a bit of a nervous register though. You lean forward.
"Are you alone there?"
"Well, Carl and Eric are both busy- so, that just left me," He swallows pretty loudly, before he starts again, "Just so you know. Uhm. Look, just make sure I can get my laptop back tonight, right?"
"Andy-"

And then he hangs up. You look to the taxi's ceiling annoyed. He probably thought that Catford was some kind of red light district.

About the PMC module.
I'm not sure it is a good idea to present it to the captain. It is pretty much saying "look, I know how to do this shit better than you because bunch of numbers made by me tell me so and your decades of experience in the field is shit compared to that".
I mean, yeah, we might be right but I doubt he will be happy with this.

I agree, and it will be nowhere near ready to show at the meeting, but it will be useful afterwards, we could maybe explain a bit about our previous model, and ask his thoughts on adapting such a model to the merc business, we have to remember, he is the veteran at this, we're the virgin (in every single way)

Oh. Alright then.
Well, then I think it is more important to try to find out what Low is doing. We can work on the model later if we want to, I don't think we should present it to Kooji or make it known that we are nothing more than a math nerd. Not saying we should pretend to be an expert in this kind of business but not show our meekness either. So that means we can work for it after the meeting and have weeks to perfect it if we want to.

Speaking of models.
We should get a supercomputer at one point to run them. Be it financial models to find best trades or PMC model. We will need a lot of computing power to run them.

We could probably do terrible things to the bitcoin exchange market. Utterly exploit the poor thing through the power of predictive analysis.

And yes, we handle Kooji with care. Part of that is never lying to him, we won't build a good partnership if we start like that, but we have to be careful how we tell him some things.

First, telling him what our job is. Actually harder than it sounds. We have a very specialized job in a specialized industry, what we do is wrapped up in a lot of jargon and doesn't really sound that important to people who don't know the field. We need to inform him what a quantitative analyst does without using words he can't be expected to know or acting like we think he's an idiot, while still making sure he knows enough about it to understand how useful a skill it can be.

It'll probably boil down to us saying we're really good at math, and we use math, statistics, and raw data to understand and model economic systems, as well as managing investment risk and so on. We shouldn't start rambling on about Monte Carlo methods, game theory, Kelly criterion or anything like that.

And we can say that we've been working on a model to predict where and when economic strife, downturns, and the like are likely to happen. He should be able to understand the uses of knowing where people are desperate and likely to need mercenaries.
>>

Actually, some poor(er) countries have some of the best internet available. It is the West that is stuck with blood-sucking providers with total monopoly who give utterly ridiculous internet packages.

I'm in Russia and have 35MB/s up and download speed for 11.5$/month. This is not even the best option available. I could get internet almost twice as fast which costs $3 dollars less but I can't be bothered. This is in Moscow though, other regions are not as lucky but still get rather great options.

I heard East European countries also get great internet.
>>
>>29676432
That's quite true. We can give him a basic idea of the model we have for Frontier, going into the actual math and nitty-gritty of it would bore him, and point out how we plan on applying the same basic framework to strife.

We're literally making a model to find where the most human suffering is so we can exploit the situation. We might not be a good person, but we probably knew that after we bought a PMC.

Mmm, delicious money, delicious rugged mercs showing us the ways of love.
>>
>>29676489
>We might not be a good person, but we probably knew that after we bought a PMC.
Hey, I don't abide by that.
I don't think Miranda sees herself as a bad person and don't want her starting to.

>embezzling from people who fuck around with money
>still see oneself as a good person

I see that Miranda's not been going to the mandatory ethics classes that most financial folks have to write their names down that they attended.

That way we know we're fucking leeches and don't deceive ourselves that we're doing good for the world when we make fat piles of money.
>>
>>29676573
we haven't embezzled anything yet and hopefully wont because at this point we left too many tracks.

Also, the idea was to steal from a company which apparently makes money on suffering (arms deals, etc) which may have been going under.
Not as bad as you make it seem. Not trying to justify it but comparing it to exploiting the human suffering directly is a bit too much.
>>
>>29676511
True, the suffering is already happening, we're just making a profit from it.

Though while we might not see ourself as a bad person, we can't really call ourself a saint considering what we're up to.

Also, we need a good reason to give to Kooji for why we want to buy a PMC. We should probably tell him that we've always found war and conflict to be interested, we had plenty of money, and we want to see the company succeed with our copious free time due to an utter lack of relationships.
>>
>>29676480

>>29676631
>Fuck no, that just blatantly being stupid, we're not going to lie to this man.
THIS. No lying to them unless the alternative is getting shot or deserted. What we CAN say is that we considered a PMC wise from an investment standpoint and drop a line about sustainable business options.
If he asks, go "In short, your trade won't ever go out of style" and leave it at that.
He's a merc. If we mention money we're already speaking a common language.
>>
One one hand I'm glad we pushed the meeting back but on the other if we already had the PMC bought then we could simply sent them after Low, kidnap him and ask what the hell he is doing in person.

Would be funny to have him tied up to a chair in an abandoned warehouse with a bag on his head. Someone removes it and he find himself in the only lit spot with armed mercs surrounding him. Right as he tries to ask a question he hears heels clicking and approaching him. By the way the mercs make space and stand it is clear that whoever is coming is in charge. When the woman in top-notch, white quality suit is lit up enough to see her, he stares on confused before slowly recognizing the frowning face.

>So, how inaccurate is this quest?
Apart from questioning whether Miranda would have jumped so fast into buying a PMC with nothing spare in the bank - unbelievable because people who go all-in in finance are people who very swiftly lose all their money, but also justifiable that she wanted to get a change fast -

Effectively embezzling and laundering money takes time. You can't just flip money and expect it to be clean; and you can't flip money and expect to get all of it back. 40% returns of clean money after a year is considered a good deal - the easiest and classic ones to do are restaurants, fast food things, that deal in large volumes of cash. Use dirty cash money to buy stock - food - no-one's going to track that too much. Trade it back in and mark up your sales, get that money passed through corporation tax, or otherwise taxed. Bam, the illicit money has been assesed and taxed by the government, it's now clean. That's mostly an organized crime thing, though.

There's other ways of doing it, especially via banks, but it's so very much more easy to be picked up due to due diligence and shit. But if you don't want to get picked up, you need to do things slow.
>>
>>29676884

no, somehow the topic wandered to private space launchs and inevitably ended up here, we're just passing the time now, although this thread only has 13 posts until it hits bump limit, we may as well keep going and System can make a new thread when he resumes running

Despite what SciFi says, dropping troops from orbit it stupid, very very stupid.

Kinetic rods on the other hand is a very viable idea, its more of a "hold the world hostage" idea, than a mercenary idea though.

Well… it could be effective for Kebab Removal.

am i missing something here?
>>
>>29681421
Kebab removal is internet slang for killing Muslims.
>>
>>29681421
Rods from God could easily be used on reticent Islamic shitholes. Not that we care for politics but it's good money to disintegrate Al Quaida caves from orbit.

very good idea.

I can think of a few shady government organizations that would be very thankful if muslim strongholds just started mysteriously disappearing. Especially since collateral damage doesn't really matter to us.

Plus it's going to eventually become way cheaper than all the hurr durr nuke missions because the required private space flight program is going to be financed on sponsor coin in all likelihood. Not to mention that large scale bombings are incredibly hard to sell. Whoever is the president will probably not intervene once their advisors tell them not to worry about the rumours of fire from.the heavens.

So how much money would some Kinetic Rods and a Satellite to launch them from cost? and the rocket to launch it of course/

5 million? 10 million?
>>
>>29681863
>>29681863
17 million for the launch, another thirty for a good satellite system.

All we have to do is create a model of the War economy, involving old political rivalries and proxy wars and the like.
Then we just have to perpetuate it for big cash money.
