The inside of the article is a mess of speculation, all tying back to the Baltic currency crisis, and a meandering condemnation of Wall Street style capitalism and gratuitous American Psycho references. The comments section isn't much better. One cryptic and long comment chain kept talking about your model in all caps. 'THE MODEL is a replacement of god for these fools,' 'Their MODEL would tell them to kill for twenty cents more they'd do it,' 'THE MODEL is what americans hope to make the world march to.'

Nope, no mention of you. That aggravates you a little. They heard the word 'model' and that sounded scary so that's all they're talking about.

Your credentials as an analyst doesn't lend you much power over finance, annoyingly enough. You get to check on your model though, which is always fun. The vaunted company replacement for sharepoint is, as usual, a laggy piece of ass, but your maintained model is there, in all of it's glories. A pile of numbers and an ugly as sin front end that spews out numbers that take some serious work to interpret.

Curiously, somebody is logged in to see the model. Actually, going by the tag "MDeacon," it's your CFO. So, he wasn't arrested? But, as soon as you're logged in, he's logged out. Frustrating. You open the interoffice email client, but, predictably, it crashes.

Model predicts explosive growth in China's Xinjiang province, and central Asia. Recommends dumping coal and oil. Increased purchases from National Atomics subsidiaries recommend purchase. Dumping Heckler and Koch, shift to Uralvagonzavod.

You feel an almost maternal pang of worry at your model. To a certain extent, it was a living thing, the way you imagined it. It had a beginning where it was almost formless, a set of mathematical simulations that would just crunch and spit out raw data. In the tender embraces of you and your team's, it refined so that there was something concrete there. Then, it grew up and was put to use by Frontier Finance, and suddenly it was out of your reach, in the hands of those dirty awful traders. And judging from what your model was focused on, it was in a dark place, focusing on firearms purchases and political instability for opportunities. It was starting to narrow down, much to your disappointment. Frontier Finance had always been concerned with the developing world after all. Part of every developing world were those profitable birth pangs, and that's what it seemed the traders had been tweaking the model to predict.

But, like every living thing, soon your model would die. Either collapsing under the weight of all these bandaids and modifications or simply being left behind as the markets changed more than it could adapt, sure enough your model would die and be consigned to the dustbin soon, unrecognizable from those simple, beautiful equations you made in your halcyon days.

You're starting to depress yourself. Christ, you need to sleep. Embezzlement.

You poke around for holes and permissions in the intranet you can push. You're trying your best to be careful though- Derek, despite looking like an overgrown garbage dump had some brains in his mass of filth. He'd done his best to close out the usual entrances for an overstepping employee- for you, this'll be hard. You're not a trade after all, you're not supposed to touch a cent. Sure, you can get the company to comp your purchase (You've been making good use of that already) but, for any significant money? That'd be something else.

You might be able to convince corporate to give you money flat out, but that'd require somebody to be in the office, unlikely at this hour.

Andy's credentials are by your side. You could log in as him. But... Because you're logging in on a different machine, Derek would have to be informed. He'd need to give the permission for Andy to access the intranet on a different machine, that is yours. At least you can trust Derek to do that. He was on call for half the week, and the other half of the week was covered by Peter, who didn't know what he was doing and was just Derek's friend, so he'd call up Derek anyway.

Or you could use Andy's laptop. As insecure as it was...Well, maybe that'd make a good cover?

You end the call, leave the phone to charge. Take off your glasses leave them on the end table, and slip in to silk sheets. You close your eyes and try to sleep.

You don't succeed. You can't help but think of your model. The one that Frontier has is very sophisticated. Very. You were its mother, but you had a lot of help. A great deal of computing power, a team of interns, and Dr. Cardwell.

You lay in bed for a time, before eventually, with a mumbled curse, you grab a pencil and a notepad, and start writing.

When you wake up, it's two in the afternoon. Lazy Sunday. You moan, and roll over on to a bed of torn pages. Another one of those nights. You get in to a minor panic scooping up the notes- modifications from the Frontier model. You can hardly remember why you started on this, but you've got notes a plenty now.

You sit up in bed, and check your phone. One missed message from Deacon, 10:00AM. Wait, that would have been 4:00 in the morning his time.

You bring up the phone, listen to the message.

Well, you've had weirder messages left on your machine. At least this one was free of heavy breathing. And bonus, he remembered you had a phd. Maybe you should walk around with a labcoat, maybe people would call you doctor then. Dr. Cardwell did that. Then again, he was always an odd one.

With a last stretch, you order room service, and start collating your notes. A model for a PMC. To be there before the customer even knows you need them. You snort, shake your head. You can be pretty crazy.

Still, maybe the Captain would like it. Aside from that, being elbow deep in your profession of choice might be a relief.

Let's see, what else do you have to do? The mystery of Mister Low was already being handled by the police. Andy was a jerk. Deacon apparently was leaving drunken messages on your machine at 4:00AM. And you guess you could fly home, but you can't, you've gotta hire some mercenaries.

You'd just picked up the pencil again when the thought crosses your mind- you were out late last night for a reason. Right. Tailor. Suit. Dress.

You groan, roll your eyes. And you were so comfy too. Oh well. The floor is too cold for your preference, so you end up doing a hopping tip toe to get to the bathroom as you wriggle out of your smelly stank clothes. A nice warm bath is all you really need to be up to muster the courage to go out. There's all sorts of weird bottles by the rim of the bath. Lot of French names and weird colored and sweet smelling liquids. Bath salts too. You have no idea how to use them, so you root about them until you find something that claims to be shampoo, and pour it on your scalp. It's ridiculously warm in the tub, and soon you're again dozing at the edge of consciousness, but with some force of great iron will, you rinse out your hair (A lot easier now that it's shorter) and rise from the tub.

After shaving your legs and pits (Another tribulation. God damn genes.), and putting the weird stuff that the salon gave you in to your hair until it looks halfway like what it was supposed to be last night, you pull on your one not shitty suit, the gray one with the skirt, grab your laptop and notes (You're not going to let it get stolen) and walk for the door. On the way out you grab your phone and dial Deacon.

No response. You leave a message.

It doesn't take you long to find it. You were tempted to try to find a classic tailor's some wizened old man in an out of the way alley that'd dispense pearls of wisdom around the needles he had in his teeth, but seeing as you had a meeting two days from now, you really didn't want to deal with the wait times. Not that you met wizened old tailors often, but you assumed they'd be the sorts to take their time with a suit.

No, you go for a high end, more corporate store. Very stark place this. Lot of black and white, and prissy looking mannequins that shared the same expression of wondering if they'd left the oven on. A place that promised style and beauty at an industrial pace.

Actually, some poor(er) countries have some of the best internet available. It is the West that is stuck with blood-sucking providers with total monopoly who give utterly ridiculous internet packages.

I'm in Russia and have 35MB/s up and download speed for 11.5$/month. This is not even the best option available. I could get internet almost twice as fast which costs $3 dollars less but I can't be bothered. This is in Moscow though, other regions are not as lucky but still get rather great options.
