You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village. The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues. You're finally awake... though everything still kind of hurts, you're back in one piece at the very least. You sword isn't, but that's going to be taken care of shortly. You hope.>Sorry, but you've been stripped down to the rank of DOG!>Though dogs are loyal, they're not all that smart...>Though she still considers you her friend, she thinks a little less of you... and also herself.>And while dogs are man's best friend, they still don't count as people.Thread archive:http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?searchall=Princess+Guard+QuestCharacter list + descriptions (in progress):http://pastebin.com/1Vhj4DJvList and descriptions of the spells shown thus far:http://pastebin.com/2c9y2sDMTwitter:https://twitter.com/QM_ArchelonQuest compilation that's kindly maintained by a person who isn't me:https://www.dropbox.com/sh/n4nhs9gd0kmnnni/04tpEy5_pe>>>>>>>>
As the other girls leave the room and Sylvie sits back down on her chair, you let out a long sigh. You're sore as hell, you worried all of your friends, and now your sword is broken on top of all of that... while you're pretty confident that Sylvie's right about Niklaus being able to fix it with crazy magic science crystals, that doesn't change the fact that it's broken -right now-.And just as you're about to go into moping mode, Sir Gregory comes into the room."Hey, Reinhold," he says, waving to you. "Feeling alright?""Yeah, I think I'll be fine," you reply."Good. I'm not about to lecture you or anything about how everything went down since that's not my place, but you ought to remember that you're no good to anyone as a corpse.""I was going to bring you a temporary replacement sword since yours is broken," Sir Gregory says as he looks over at the remains of your weapon, "but I guess Agnes is taking care of that?""Yeah, she said that she'd lend me her old dueling sword in the meantime," you reply. And then Sir Gregory's eyes grow wide."She's actually letting you borrow... haha, you better not break that thing, she'll fucking kill you if you do!" he laughs. "But I guess she really has taken a shine to you if she's actually willing to lend you something -that- important to her...">talk to Gregory about a thing>ask him to send in the king>do something else

>>29745731this
Waited until the new thread's >writing prompt to post this shit, so here we go BIG OL WALL OF TEXT, WOOO.So at first it was obviously just about dueling Monique. Maybe giving him his rematch helps ease his mind about the previous loss. Monique's been a bit of a prat, so maybe part of us kind of wants to show him up again just to rub it in. Our friends all tell us they're rooting for us, and we don't want to let them down. And then it comes out that he's got a demigod stuck in his sword. Now let's think back. All Reinhold's life he's had to put up with shitty, base conflict; thugs in back alleys, training to put swords through other grunts in the army. The only exposure he has had to conflict bigger than this was through Volker—and in the end, those were the things that killed him. And then Reinhold gets a big break, and suddenly he's surrounded by all of these awesome, larger-than-life people. And yet, in spite of all that, we're the one they're trusting to keep Marianne safe....but we've never really needed to.We've won fights before, obviously, but any conflicts we've run afoul of since our new appointment have mostly been more of the same. We stopped a shitty spy. With the lindwurm we did our job and stood in one place, and even when Luciana was attacked we fought back, but there wasn't anything that seemed overtly special about them. At the time, they were just more thugs that needed to be dealt with.
>>29745850And then here we are, thinking we're in yet another mundane conflict (if a slightly higher-tier one), and then, out of the blue, we're faced with something way beyond the scope we're used to. This is the most controlled environment we can come up with (relatively strict rules, skilled healers on hand, force being used to incapacitate rather than kill,) so it's not even like it's THAT dangerous for us to carry on. And then we're asked if we want to back down, or if we want to test what we're really capable of.And suddenly it's not really about dueling Monique anymore.Maybe part of it comes down to that somewhere, deep down, Reinhold just needed to assure himself that he really CAN do his job. That it wasn't just all some big fluke or an elaborate practical joke that's being played on him. That he's not (as so many people have joked) just around to be a nice guy to keep the princess company while her actual, more talented protectors watch and chuckle on the sidelines. That, when it comes time for us to protect the people we've come to care about, we'll know just what we're capable of protecting them from.I mean, it's kind of sappy shit, but hey.
>>29745850>>29745865Er, okay? I really don't think people are really giving a shit right now. Wait until it comes up (inevitably) again.
>>29745865>I mean, it's kind of sappy shit, but hey.I happen to like this brand of sappy.
>>29745784THAT CUNT
>>29745865This. We weren't continuing the duel with Monique out of any sense of pride or manliness. It was more due to the fact that its a very rare opportunity to fight against someone using a sealed king and be almost guaranteed to live.
>>29745887Was bringing this up in preparation for us having to justify ourselves to Marianne, who's just going to see us as being a moron who just doesn't understand when to quit, and figured it'd be better to do so now rather than waiting for our actual conversation with her to mention it.
>>29745784stop worrying about flags, play with your heart and instinct, not with your brain and schemes
>>29745865Not only that, but he's showing off for the crowd, most of the people in attendance, would likely love to see Mariannes downfall. Reinhold is what stands between their plans and her, when he didn't back down in the face of overwhelming strength for the sake of a mere duel, he showed that he's unlikely to back down for anything, his stubbornness and determination showing that he's unbribable, and that they only way to get by him is to kill him, which he has shown to be a fairly difficult task.
>>29745865I figured something like that would come up when we got our lecture from the princess. The ability to duel on par with a sealed king, should in my mind help him reconcile his own skills with himself.
>>29745900Ah.
>>29745900>>29745865Seems like a decent enough explanation.Basically wanted to know we could handle it and didn't want to fail her. Cool

>>29745947no, no. thats too much. cant do that.
>>29745947Every word will be like a dagger through her heart and Reinhold won't even know it.I'll support this.
>>29745947I actually wanted to skirt around saying that we kept going just because she told us to win, since she seems like the type of person who would let that keep her from having us do our job.As heartwarming as that seems at first glance, it seems way safer for it to be more about a personal "yeah, I really can do this" thing than "BUT YOU TOLD ME TO WIN SO I AM GOING TO WIN AT ALL COSTS"
>>29745947Ok, we know Marie well enough to realize that saying that would cause her self-loathing levels to shatter any human metric of measurement. Noooot the best thing to say.
>>29745947I *wish* we could pull off Guts or Emiya-tier stuff with what we're surrounded by.
>>29745850>>29745865so we kept going when the sealed king was brought out to prove, both to ourself and others, that we really could do our job? i like it. and as for why we kept going when we were basically crippled and the sword was broken, we've got the rather justifiable rage at losing our memento
>>29745973At the least she'll stop being so nonchalant about letting us get bent over by situations for amusement
"Her sword's that important?" you ask. Maybe it's just a sentimental thing like how it is with you and your own sword, but there's also the possibllity that it has some kind of amazing enchantment on it..."She was on the dueling circuit for thirty years, and used that one sword for the entire time," Sir Gregory replies. "It was only hanging on her wall, last I heard... but she'd smack the shit out of me and Volker for even pretending to try and mess with that thing back when we were little.""Heh, It's hard to imagine anyone doing that to you," you reply, unable to keep yourself from chuckling at the image of SIR GREGORY of all people actually being afraid of that sweet little old lady."She's scary as hell when she's actually pissed off," Sir Gregory says, ignoring your laughter at his expense. "Even Celestino gives her a lot more leeway than any of the other nobles.""Yeah, she was telling me that they go way back," you say."Waaaaay back..." Sir Gregory laughs. "But I suggest that you try not to make jokes about her age either if you value your life.">[1/?]

I was able to handle myself pretty well against them, but when I got hired on to protect you, I was suddenly surrounded by monsters that could turn anything and anyone I'd ever fought to paste like it was nothing, and I was left in charge of guarding one of their daughters, who just happens to be one of the most important people in the country as well. Honestly, I felt weak, and I had no way of comparing myself to any of them since none of them would spar with me or show me just what they could do save Arnaud, and I know he was holding back. Then Monique pulled out Setsuranka, and for the first time I had a way of testing myself against the kind of threats that are going to be coming after you sooner or later, and in an environment where the odds of me dieing were next to zero. I fought to see if I honestly had the skills to deserve to be your body guard, and I think I did pretty damn good."feel free to critique as needed, i've been up for a while so i know it can't be perfect

"Oh yeah, before you go," you call out to Sir Gregory just as he's walking through the door. "how's Monique holding up? Karel said that it was pretty bad."While he may be an asshole, it's not like you want him dead or anything."...you don't need to worry about -him-," Sir Gregory says, a cold look in his eyes that you're all too familiar with.He then leaves without another word, leaving you alone with Sylvie. And after a few minutes, the doctor comes in to check on you... and even though she was apparently in the room while the medics were operating on you, Sylvie runs out of the room completely embaarrassed while mumbling something about shirtless something.>[1/?]
>>29746574Sorry implies regret, but he definitely doesn't regret making sure that he would be able to defend her. Besides that, I'd prefer to stick with the shortest version and add on to that if it looks like she needs it.

>>29746592With the first part, we do need to bring up how we feel like a joke pretty much.I mean Reinhold isn't retarded, he's seen the power of magic, and that combined with Marianne calling him a pet all theti me really should cause insecurity.

>>29746611>insecurityI think that's exaggerating a bit, Reinhold is confident in his skills. He may find his position unnecessary though, since everyone older is so OP and all.
>>29746602He regrets causing them to worry over him.
I wonder if Reinhold will ever measure up to Monique power-wise if he's not allowed a Sealed King. Still pondering alternatives (wish I was more interested in the girls, then I wouldn't care quite so much, but I just can't wait to get out of here).
>>29746600She ran away to get a camera only to realize that those haven't been invented yet.
>>29746611>Marianne calling him a pet all theti meTo be fair that is more of an internal thing. Sure he might have picked up on it but I was under the impression it's sorta' meta to mention the Guard Rank.

>>29746622Mostly just lots of blood along the collar and massive lacerations in both arms. Some bone shards. That's not really insides-tier.
>>29746628We're confident in our skills, but I feel like it's the same as someone else would be confident in their ability to weave baskets or something.
>>29746630We DID nearly kill him without one, once we've learned more magic we might be even.

>>29746630Between some magic training, our new potentially really cool sword, and Arnaud beating us into a solid magic swordsman we probably will be able to.Not in an official duel as we couldn't use Script and he could use Magic, but in an actual fight we could probably match up given time and practice.
>>29746642they had to open him up and hold the pieces of his collar bone in place to heal it.
>>29746618>interrupts him with a kissI think that'd be going a bit far, but I believe a slap and then a hug makes sense.

>>29746630The Sealed King is one hell of a force multiplier, but I don't think Monique's got much more natural potential left to exploit. Greg is apparently still confident in his ability to explode him into little meaty chunks, and he's just a dude who went through the same Arnaud magic swordsman training regimen that we're going through now, and with weaponized bad attitude.
>>29746703of course not generally, but getting bumped up from random soldier to royal guard stuck him in an entirely different league, and when you hear that two of the guys you now hang out with fairly regularly accidentally created a lake when they got into a fight, it makes you wonder just how useful your sword skills, kick ass as they may be, are going to be at that level

>>29746740monique hears setsuranka's voicerein hears sylvie's voice
>>29746729Way I see it, the sword skills are a solid baseline to work from but what will really determine how good Reinhold gets is the magic he learns.
>>29746729Okay, the way you say it makes sense to me now.
>>29746600After the doctor is satisfied that there's nothing horribly wrong with you and that the work done to patch you up was suitable, he casts Refresh on you in order to get rid of your soreness (thank God), and gives you a clean bill of health.Shortly after you get dressed (though you wonder who it was that brought you a fresh change of clothes considering that what you were wearing before is in tatters), Sylvie comes back into the room, her face the color of a tomato."So you're all fine now?" Sylvie asks, her glasses fogged up."Pretty much," you reply. "Dunno why they waited so long to cast Refresh on me if it was that easy to stop me from being so sore, though...""Oh, that's so that they can make sure that they patched you up right," Sylvie replies. What if PGQ had a /d/ spinoff

>>29747123she called us by nameI'd say it's fair to do the same. Also all these responses are too jovial, Mari is the one with issues out the butt and she's probably really upset. 'i fucked up lol' probably isn't the way to go here.

>>29747056Don't snark right now. She's mad because she's worried and we should let try to get her to talk to us about that instead of deflecting with a joke like this whole thing was nothing.

Calling it a night here. Thanks for going back to the usual level of posting, it is appreciated.I don't think that I'll be running tomorrow since I need to be up at a retardedly early hour on Saturday, but I might be able to run a Q&A thread about the setting or whatever if you guys are interested. You guys can go ahead and vote on that until this thread dies, I'll check it in the morning. And thanks for playing.
>>29747187thanks for running!
>>29747187;-;night archty for thread(s)
>>29747187Thanks for running, Arch. A Q&A thread sounds pretty interesting.

>>29747187Noooooooooooo...

>>29747187Thanks for getting over the trolls, and not letting them ruin things for you and for all your legitimate players.
>>29747187Damn, I was hoping for Marianne's reaction. Goodnight bro, I wouldn't mind that Q&A for sure.
>>29747187'Night bro, looking forward to bombarding you with setting-questions if we do the Q&A.
Aw, I fucked up the archiving. Should have "and ending with a stern glare"

On the subject of dogs: Just because there is no current indication of dog side-character doesn't mean it's impossible for a fucking awesome dog to come out of left field.See: Iggy.Never lose hope.
>>29747434Reinhold does seem like the sort who would find a stray puppy, pet it, feed it a bit because it looked sad and hungry, and then get surprised when it followed him all the way back to the castle and then deciding to keep it. It'd probably never leave his side after that. And every single character would compare the two of them to each other.
>>29747528>Reinhold does seem like the sort who would find a stray bear pup, pet it, feed it a bit because it looked lost and sad and hungry, and then get surprised when it followed him all the way back to the castle and then deciding to keep it. Then he would have a partner for life in the form of a MOTHERFUCKING GIANT BEAR.fify.
>>29747553"Reinhold, that's not a dog, that's a bear. I'm serious.""What? He's just a big puppy. He loves being scratched behind the ear and he followed me home and everything, a bear wouldn't do that."
>>29747528>>29747553>>29747589...or split the difference and make it a dire wolf.
>>29747553>>29747589
>>29748865>Such racism...Not all the bears are same you know? It is more the way they are raised. I am sure Reinhold will help his adopted bear grow into an upstanding citizen.
>>29747187A Q&A session sounds divine.
Is the vote for how to greet Marianne, or whether to run a Q&A thread? If it's the latter, I vote yes. If the former, some variation on these (or another serious, joke-less response):>>29747104>>29747110I think it was mentioned earlier, but I wanted to also add that as one of the "blame Marianne"/be a man Reinhold voters, my primary motivation was several references in earlier threads to Marianne's dislike of nice guys (coupled with a little RL transference, which I know is a no-no but is sometimes unavoidable). She expressed disgust, not casual indifference or annoyance, when we were really nice to her. The kicker for me was that seemingly off-hand comment by (I think) Nico in reference to Millien, something along the lines of "the princess would never like someone who sucks up to her." Girls do not make comments like that casually. I know Arch has said that wasn't his intent, but I wanted to shed some light on why I feel the way I do; I suspect others have similar reasons as well. This didn't come out of nowhere, it came from peoples' interpretation of the story. That interpretation may have been incorrect, so let's settle it in the Q&A thread and move on.
If Marianne gets annoyed about Rein being a nice guy, we can just tell her to deal with it. If she asks why is he acting so nice, then just tell her it's to piss her off. Then she becomes conflicted whether he is a complete asshole or a genuinely nice guy.
