You hesitantly agree with the voice, whatever the creature is that is speaking with you. You pack is still worriedly looking over the cliff edge, they know that they stand between the nightmare Nadel, and a pack of armed humans.

As soon as you’re a few steps away from your pack, your shadow takes on a life of its own, or rather the creature living in your shadow steps out. It’s shaped like a human female, quite like Caecilia actually, but made entirely out of darkness. Her form shifts uncertainly, playing on the edges of stone and trying to pry free of the surface. The only feature in the darkness is her eyes, smoldering pits of light.

When you make eye contact with it, the light triples in intensity. Then you feel a burning itch around your eyes as they begin to water. You yelp as fire bursts forth from them, and you crouch down on the ground to wipe desperately at them.

“Hear me? Whitefang?”

Try as you might, the fire only grows stronger, bursting forth.

“Can you hear me, Whitefang?”

“The fire will not harm you, calm yourself.”

Whatever she did to you, you find words forming in your mind easily, thoughts connecting where they couldn’t before. “What are you?” You can’t vocalize it, but you know she understands.

But she made a mistake,” she replies in a bit of a sing song. “She let me think. “My name isn’t homunculus. I don’t have a name. But I might, one day soon. Once I was bound, but in her zeal and power lust, she made me an opportunity. That’s where you come in. Take me away from here, and I can be free.”

You turn away from the villa and start trotting along the cliff, back to the woods where you emerged. Your pack follows close behind, glad to be putting distance between you and the humans. The homunculus remains quiet until you ask her, “Just what can you do for me? I need an edge.”

“Nothing much yet,” she explains as you crawl over and under the boulders leading down the cliff side. “I am a being of knowledge, I can guide you to great power. And I won’t even destroy you like I will destroy Caecilia. Knowledge and power are the gates, and I hold the keys. For example, Schatten will soon regain his Bluttrinker legend, if he survives.”

“He’ll be able to heal himself again?”

“Perhaps. Legends have a way of morphing. It nearly disappeared when Sarah and her father died. He had surely been nursing his power with them for a long time,” she responds as you slow to a stop and let your pack slip into the trees ahead of you. You hesitate just long enough to see a pack of humans crest the edge of the cliff, fire in hand.

You dash into the woods, and the light quickly fades, and you can hear the trees dancing. But no eyes are opening any more.

I'm scared.

You drift to the front of your pack, trying to pick your way through the woods by the scattered moon light, but the way is tricky. Wherever you look seems to lock in place, but everything around you is twisting. For a while, you continue on, waiting for the trees to break, but then you hear the sisters barking, and they’re far away.

You turn around and dash through the woods, Schatten fast on your heels. The two of them had gotten separated somehow, but not far. You find them quickly, as a slew of vines are reaching up for them.

“Let him come, I’ve fought him before,” you respond as you signal to Schatten to take the lead. He’s reluctant at first, but cooperates.

“Is that how you got this legend spark? The strange one?” the homunculus asks as you follow behind your pack, keeping your eyes dead set ahead.

“Yes. I blinded him, and cracked something. It happened right after that.” You can hear the vines around you moving, chasing after you, but they seem to be getting weaker and weaker, slower with every step. A long ways later, you’re certain you never got turned around, that you must be nearing the edge of Nadel’s domain. Then one of the sisters starts to veer off. You break your eye line to snap at her, lest she be swallowed by the woods.

Too late you realize that you may have just lead Schatten astray, but when you look forward again, you find relief. Your pack is dashing forward, moonlight is ahead of you. You follow behind and break free of the woods, you’re back near the river, near your original territory.

“Well, how lucky of them. I really didn’t expect that to work. Go get some rest, tomorrow you’ll have trouble to deal with.”

“Doesn’t matter, we’ll need to hunt tomorrow, all of us will be starving,” you respond as you curl up. The two sisters lie on either side of you, their warmth welcome against the winter night.

“Not all of you,” she responds.

You shake your head and step back. When you start retreating to your pack’s previous territory, none of the other wolves question you. You set about the routine of hunting and begin scouring the muddy forest. Your pack follows you for a time, chasing squirrels and looking for hares, until they catch sight of one of the goats still lingering in the valley. The three of them take off after the easy prey, but you hold back.

You caught a whiff of something tastier. Your mouth is dripping saliva as you sneak up through the snowy hills. The tracks and scent are unmistakable, a boar has wandered into your territory. The fat hairy thing is snuffling about for fungi and roots, oblivious to your approach.

You descend from behind, far from its sharpened tusks, and tear it down. It starts squealing, but by the time it tries to run, you’ve already immobilized it. A few more bites and you’ve gutted him. One more, and you bite through its neck to finish it. As fat as it is, it’s still the end of winter, it’s lean and small.

When you reunite with your pack, they’ve already stripped the small goat and still seem famished. You drop the boar and signal for them to join you in eating. As the alpha, you are given priority in eating, which you use to devour the organs from the boar.

Schatten comes to the boar last, you can smell the blood on his breath. He must have drained the goat. You also notice he’s healthier. Like he was before Hasdrubal.

“So what was the trouble you were worried about today?” you ask the homunculus.

“It has yet to come wolf. The day is young,” she responds. Her voice is much, much fainter in the sunlight. Must have something to do with her shadow nature.

With the boar cleaned to the bone, you find yourself still hungry. Your immense size has some downsides to it apparently. At least your pack seems sated.

Describe how we feel the wind brushing through our fur as we leap and etc.

The rest of your pack is full, but still injured, they all know they need to rest and recover. But your stomach is still empty. When Schatten leads the two sisters back to the den near Nadel’s forest, you stay behind and signal for them to continue. You venture back into the territory.

You start running through the forest, searching for a scent, something worthy of you filling your stomach on. Then you find a deer trail. A lone buck. Fresh tracks, slow moving. The prey must have calmed after so long with the pack in the other territory. He’s docile, easy.

You find him grazing beneath a pine. His ears dart back and forth, perfectly taut. When you step forward, your paw squelches through the mud and snow. He hears. His head snaps up and his ears spin to point at you. You snarl and push forward as you sees you approaching.

Mud sprays into the air as the buck tries to run away. He leaps through the air, bounding over the ice and mud. You leap through the air after him. One leap, two, on the third your jaw clamps down on him. The deer bleats out as you pull it to the ground with a twist of your neck, snapping one of his hind legs.

It starts thrashing back with its antlers, forcing you to time your strike. Before he can get back to his feet to try to run away again, you bit down on his spine, and snap it. You eagerly set upon your kill, feasting as you lay in the blood.

When you finish, you find yourself full, and the day is nearly over. The sun will set soon.

Sated but not adventurous, you return to your pack. Schatten and the injured sister are already fast asleep in the den, while the other female wolf is sitting outside, waiting for you. Till now, you had had a bit of a hard time telling the two of them apart, but now that you finally see her apart from her sister, you notice the gradient in the color of her fur, bright white on her chest, to a dark grey on her back, with just a hint of brown mixed in. Due to the injury of her sister, she’ll probably be a bit more independent for a while. When you enter the den, she follows behind and the four of you rest.

“Wake up wolf. Wake up you sleepy lump, what good are you if you sleep through everything important?” the homunculus is bothering you. You drearily pull your head up to look around. It’s deep in the night. “They’re burning the forest down.” You open your eyes more, the homunculus is standing on the wall of the den.

Smoke is floating up from the valley.

You step outside to look down on the territory you were going to annex. All of it is ablaze, humans atop horses are running along the river and road, spreading the destruction.

Nadel is screaming.
