Anna, yes. You're stuck doing patrol duty today, with your good friend and wingmate Katerina. You've known each other since, you dunno, when you were kids?

The both of you are almost inseparable, even during Witch Academy. Almost. Commissars can be very, very scary things. And really, your parents had a very dumb family name. Titfucknova? Really? Maybe that's why you and Katerina were so close.

You're pretty lousy at waking up, but you come to in record time. Your eyes snap open, staring at Katerina in all of her non-pantsed combat finery.

"If you don't hurry, you'll be flying hungry, you know." Your wingmate pouts. It's a cute gesture, you have to admit. You dress quick.

Breakfast was a simple and quick affair, mostly because you're up so early that nothing hot is available. You have to make do with with combat rations and boiling your own hot water.

And with that, you're up in the air. You've done the equipping process enough times to do it in your sleep.

Patrol duty is one of the most boring things to do. You're pacing the the same area over and over, usually seeing the same thing. Usually, you'd have at least one pilot in his plane accompanying you, but unlike Striker Units, planes can be taken apart for spare parts.

It does seem to be another boring flight. That is, until you catch an unidentified flash of light.

You're forbidden from engaging targets, since you're in Chinese territory. And if this UFO is armed, well...

You sure wish you had a ShvaK rather than the ShkaS in your hands right now.

There's only silence. Whatever the UFO was, it's not very communicative, at the very least.

It's a tense few minutes as you wait. But there's nothing, not even static.

Which make it all the more surprising when you realize you're being fired on.

You instinctively throw up a shield and brace for impact, but there's no force behind the shot. In fact, apart from a rather warm feeling, it's unlike anything you have experienced.

And that's when another shot whips past your ear. Strangely, there's no bullet.
