NOTE: The time-period is just prior to the Rachni wars, if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
*/

You are Vayle, an Asari afflicted with the genetic disease of the Ardat Yakshi. If you attempt to merge your mind with another’s they will die and your skills will grow more powerful. As of the last chapter you discovered your only friend, a Quarian girl by the name of Mel, was actually a member of the terrorist organization named the Ahn’Qui and that an unknown Asari was out for your blood. After a lucky shot with your biotics, and a lot of spare wire, you brought the incapacitated Mel back to your shared apartment to hear her reasoning for the attack.
-/-/-/-/-/

Keeping your gun leveled at Mel’s head you motion for her to begin, curiosity waxing and patience waning.

“You remember how I told you my grandmother founded the Ahn’Qui?” You nod, “Well, that was only a half-truth. She founded the Rannoch chapter of the organization, but it has far older origins than the Quarian home-world. It was in-fact, a Salarian organization dating back to pre-space age times, it served out assassinations and espionage in the name of the ruling families of Sur’kesh in secret, and in return they were given political power and material wealth beyond imagination…” She pauses for a second while rubbing her wrists together in the uncomfortably bound wire.

>>
“Once the Salarians and Asari created the council the Dalatrass released information about the organization, which the records had dubbed the ‘League of One’. Almost immediately the Asari called for the disbandment of the league and the Dalatrass complied. To keep the story short, the League’s members were sentenced to life in prison/execution due to the classified information they held. The members fled, and formed the Ahn’Qui.”

>What do you ask?
>>
>>30086317
Why did the Ahn'Qui want to attack Omega?
>>
>>30086317
So why does the Ahn'Qui want to blow up [wherever it was specifically]?

What are the general motives of the modern Ahn'Qui?
>>
>>30086461
Mel grins, "Well that's easy, we need a base of operations and Omega has plenty of economic and military potential."

You raise an eyebrow at the answer, but it seem true enough. Afterall Omega does have extensive element zero deposits and the loyalty of those who seek shelter there.
>>
>>30086497

"What are the general motives of the modern Ahn'Qui? And why did you try to blow up the mines?" You ask incredulously.

"The mines are the beating heart of Omega. If we incapacitated the mines for a long enough period Omega would fail and order would crumble, allowing us to sweep in and take control."
>>
>>30086608
So that's what the Ahn'Qui are after? Control? Power?

They hardly seem exceptional in that regard. Why'd you join with them?
>>
>>30086608
"As for motivation it is generally believed the founders of the Ahn'Qui simply want revenge against those whom destroyed their way of life, but most of us seek power and glory of our own or simply don't like the current order of things."
>>
>>30086646
"So that's what the Ahn'Qui are after? Control? Power?

They hardly seem exceptional in that regard. Why'd you join with them?"

Mel grimaces at the question while avoiding your eyes. In a soft voice she answers, "You don't just ignore your family heritage as a Quarian. We value our familial ties more than life itself, I would NEVER betray my heritage." The spite in her voice is a side of Mel you have never seen.
>>
>>30086717
Move on or more questions?
>>
>>30086737
I feel like there's some probing to do on the family front but I have no idea what, in particular, so move on I guess.
>>
>>30086717
Move on.
>>
>>30086737
Moving on from lack of questions.

You pace the room unsure of what to do next with your roommate turned terrorist turned captive. Boss is still expecting your call confirming the death of the saboteur, an Asari with an unknown vendetta against Omega is on the loose, and the only person who cared for you is tied up on the couch. As you turn your back to Mel and face the kitchen, you hear the snap of plastic, and what you can only assume is the force of Mel tackling you from behind.

Twisting your hand behind your back to touch your attacker you fire a biotic push which successfully staggers your opponent and frees you, wincing when a sharp object scratches across your neck. You face attacker and notice Mel with a green syringe in her right hand and a shocker expression on her face. "I'll be honest Vayle, I didn't expect you to avoid that." She grins at your notice of the needle, "Don't worry friend, it is only CX84a, it'll sedate you for a nice long travel through space. Don't make this hard on yourself and resist Vayle, we both know I am far more trained than your blue-ass. That cut should sedate your biotics for plenty of time so you are at quite the disadvantage!" The area where you were cut has gone numb along with a large portion of your neck, chest, and arms.

What do you do?

>Attempt biotics despite the drug, pull the syringe away
>Acquiesce to her demands, she doesn't seem to want to kill you,
>Intimidate her with your pistol
>Engage her in hand-to-hand
>Kill her with the gun

Hand to hand wins,

"You won't be killed Vayle, we'll treat you ve-" You cut her off mid sentence by charging her, grabbing her arm to prevent her from injecting you with the sedative, and take a swing towards her face. Mel is thrown to the side, crashing into the holo-vid stand which promptly shatters.

"You're going to pay for that you bitch." the Quarian growls at you, her bio-luminescent irises dimming in what you can only assume is a threatening gesture.

Brandishing the syringe, she charges you. You dodge her slices and are pushed back towards the wall, to your right is the couch and to the left is another wall, you'll have to push back.

To be fair it's only the initial training you received from Boss, you don't become a master from only a few hours of training.

Success.

You feint to your right and Mel lunges towards where you should have gone, but you charge straight forward and catch her off guard, causing her to land on her stomach. You tackle her and struggle for the syringe, sitting on her back. She thrusts her arm backwards and you catch it, immobilizing her arm at the elbow. You press your hand forward harder and harder until she releases her grip on the syringe. You grasp in, and jab the needle into her leg. Almost immediately the struggling stops below you, and Mel is comatose below you. Standing shakily while rubbing the numb area on your neck out of annoyance you jam in the cod efor Boss' omnitool.

"Ahh, she-demon, took your damn time with this one didn't ya? Now where's the corpse and why the hell did they target the mines?" the Krogan grunt through the communicator. Your omnitool expands its view to show the unconscious Quarian. Boss grunts in pleasure at the display, it's obvious that he assumes Mel is dead and that is perfectly fine by you and your wallet. You explain the sudden appearance of the Ahn'Qui, Boss simply laughs in his overconfident demeanor, and claims they won't ever doubt his power again. He shuts down the communication, and you stare at Mel.

What are you going to do with her?
>Kill her, she betrayed you and attempted to kidnap you.
>Hold her for ransom from the Ahn'Qui at risk of angering Boss should he or his men find out
>Leave her here, she showed you kindness at first thus she should receive atleast some modicum of the same treatment. Flee from Omega.
>Flee Omega, and take her with you, with the threat of an Asari out for your blood and the Ahn'Qui desiring this station it is time to leave and Mel will work as a great bargaining chip/ransom.

Leave Omega, the fact that we had professional troops on our tail means we're basically fucked. Mel, like it or not, might be able to give us a job. Explain to her simply and clearly that the reason why she isn't dead is because she showed kindness. If she asks about the Asari after us, explain that we're a genetic deviant with a lot of biotic power, which the Asari government doesn't usually want running around. And that the Boss is far too conspicuous.

Using what's left of the wiring you bind Mel up while you search for stronger materials to contain her. Omega's trashy atmosphere means there are lots of random pieces of metal salvage lining the streets and Mel's residential district is no different. After only several minutes of scrounging about the halls outside the apartment you have a few yards worth of steel cabling that is able to be wrapped around Mel's body several times. Using small vestiges of biotic power you bend knots and ties, not even Boss could escape from this contraption. With a grin you yawn and head into Mel's bedroom due to the Couch's current occupant with said occupant's several hours of sedated sleep, and collapse on the small bed. You shut your eyes as you begin drifting to sleep.

-=-

"GIL! GIL RUN!" Diala screams, as the gunmen fill your clan meeting-place, your Salarian brothers litter the floor around you, and Diala is put at gunpoint.

Running through the smoke filled building and tripping across the corpse-strewn floor you exit into the dark Sur'Kesh night. As a young Salarian you are able to quickly patter out into the marshes surrounding your home, tears streaming down you face as you hear Diala, the Dalatrass you were imprinted to, screams are put silent by a gunshot.

-=-

You awake in a sweat in Mel's bed, rubbing your eyes to wipe away a tear that had escaped. "What the hell just happened..." You whisper to yourself as you get up, the clock on your omnitool alerting you that 6 hours have passed.

Pulling you away from the strange dream you can hear your captive calling for you in the other room. You find Mel struggling in the steel bindings, a frustrated look of annoyance plastered on her face.

>What do you do? (Write-in)

>>30089316
"This is goodbye. Just...why do it? Why?"

"Mel, look. I'm on a station with no friends beyond...someone who just tried to kill me. My employer seems to think everything is fine, when commandos just tried to kill both of us. And he thinks you're dead, by the way. If we're going to do something, we do it. I'm tired of things being decided for me because others think they know better, and so I should just toe the line and be obedient. Lets get out of here."
>>
Out of curiosity. How many times is she going to have to try and drug or kill us to get you all to just kill her?
>>
You pull your gun out and place the barrel to Mel's head. In a calm fashion you did not expect she simply stares at you; probably expecting you to pull the trigger.

So here's the deal: You help me escape Omega, you live, and we part ways the moment we have the chance OR I kill you and escape on my own." You trail the gun down her cheek before holstering it.

"You have a deal Vayle, but you do know you will have to release me yes?" She says, gesturing at the steel cables wrapped around her. Simply waving your gun she quiets down and realizes that the binding won't be steel, but rather a pistol shot through the head. Getting to work, you unwrap the Quarian who promptly stands and stretches, surprising you with the immense flexibility she presents.

"Now then. We need to decide which escape route will be best, obviously Omega doesn't have the greatest of regulations of ships entering and exiting the docking areas, but it will be some difficulty hijacking a ship." She keys several commands into her omnitool and a manifest appears over it.

"According to today's records there are over two dozen ships of varying types docked in station. Four of which are able to be piloted by myself..."

> "Meria" - A ship owned by a volus merchant, schooner class, with small military upgrades to prevent pirate attacks, and very large cargo bay. The guards on the ship are assumed to be armed, but are comprised solely of Volus.

> "Gor'Gor" - a Quarian frigate owned by the Darsul mining corporation. There are nearly no military implements en-board, but has a sufficient drone bay and bandwidth connection, along with modifiable mining-lasers.

> "Gerick" - A ship owned by The Boss' minions and has the Afterlife logo spanning it's hull. Also a schooner, the ship is mainly dedicated to crew quarters and weaponry, definitely stronger than the Merchant ship but with nearly no drone capabilities or cargo space.

Selecting the Gerick, the two of you collect your things. You have your meager supply of weapons and clothing and Mel surprisingly seems to be carrying less. Though you assume her small bag is more than filled with deadly implements and the like. Troding out of the apartment Mel's Omnitool leads you to the docking bays. As you leave the residential district Mel pulls out a small device, clicks a button, and you see a small burst of flame arise from Mel's -former- apartment, presumably to destroy what she had left behind.

The guards surrounding the ship were numerous but through both sheer luck and the Quarian's knack for lies you were able to avoid the majority of the forces.

How will you board the ship?

>Bluff your way on board, you are The Boss' assassin after all.

ohohoho

we forgot that the rachni wars are a comin
>>
>>30091253
Well, why are we doing this? We're clearly ruthless, but we've got serious firepower on our ass, so we probably want to remain quiet in our actions.

What's our relationship with Mel?
>>
>>30091350
Like, does anyone know of any other "We can go here and not get tracked" place beyond the Terminus?
If we go to known space, Justicars are gonna have cameras up our ass within 2 Yoink!s. But if we stay out here, Boss and 100 other random jackasses will be on our ass too.

There's GOTTA be a way to just fuck off.

If we do it in the same ship and we leave survivors we'll get added to a "Welp here's yet another pirating asshole" registrar.
Boss will link the ship that gets seen, to the ship he lost, and get pissy.
The Justicars will link it together too somehow, and get pissy.
Unless of course we jack a ship, leave no survivors, and scuttle our previous one into a fucking star or something.

The few mercs guarding the doors regard you and Mel with a smirk, two Salarians wielding assault rifles, a Vorcha with a nasty looking tungsten knife in each hand, and a Quarian male with a pistol comprising their ranks.

You open your mouth to speak, but Mel beats you to the punch "Let's be quick about this boys you each get 1000 credits if you join us, including future payments as time goes on," the group seems excited by the prospect of easy money, "Otherwise, you can leave, or die in an attempt to resist."

The group eagerly accepts the deal, you and Mel split the payment, bringing your wallet down to 3000. Your new group of mercs quickly clears the ship of 'unagreeing' personnel and Mel takes the helm of the ship. Your gun has never left her back, and recognizing this fact, you are the captain of this ship for all intents and purposes.

As the ship's engines fire up, several workers in the surrounding area yell towards your ship in anger.

"It's time to go Vayle!" Mel yells as guns are aimed at the ship.

I don't think it will be a good idea to jump from one organization fucking with our abilities (the boss) to another one who will do the same. Especially since the Ahn'Qui are well known around the galaxy.
>>
>>30092263
I don't think it was a good idea leaving Omega
>>
>>30092263
we need to find a merc group we can join quietly and get some experience and creds, and I don't think the Ahn'Qui are right for us right now, but if we let Mel go, she will owe us her life, what, 3 times over? Thats a lot of debt to pay off should we ever come calling in the future.
>>
>>30092320
it was becoming clear, with the Boss treating us as expendable, Ahn'Qui's moves against Omega, and a justicar on our glorious blue arse, that we were not longer welcome

we literally did 2 things for him, we did nothing to prove that we WEREN'T expendable. but whatever what's done is done. I vote for going to some random place to hide and talk things out with Mel some more
>>
>>30092126
That's a sign that you need to rethink life decisions

>>30092015
I think this is the perfect time to pull an Aria.

Step 1.) We find a small colony,
Step 2.) Integrate into the community as a new colonist
Step 3.) Use our fuckme aura to seduce an engineer into sending out a signal that mainly says "Maintenance will take down comms for awhile"
Step 4.) Do the same to Colonial leaders
Step 5.) Kill any dissidents after assimilating the population into our cult
Step 6.) Reestablish communications, we now have a cult.
>>
>>30092387
It was pretty obvious Boss was a power-hungry jack-ass. Our goal isn't to become buddy-buddy it's the get a comfortable life and survive.
>>
>>30092411
that brings WAY too much attention to us and we get almost no profit out of it, and cults are stupid
>>
>>30092411
I like this idea, but maybe we should try practicing to learn that domination move morinth has? Experiment on some of our merc lackeys we hired?
>>
>>30092453
But that's the beauty of the plan, if we do it right and cut off communication, nobody will find out.

And having a cult does have benefits, free feeding, potential access to resources, a place to hide, base of operations, etc.

"The Citadel!" You yell as the first shot impacts the ship, Mel opens her mouth as if she wanted to argue but is cut short by the burst of acceleration from entering faster than light speeds.

The two of you share a sigh of relief as Omega exits your field of view. Mel's hands are rapidly entering commands into the ship's piloting console to perform some task that's way over your head.

"Vayle, I might as well tell you this now rather than later. This ship is recognizably from Omega so we won't be able to stay docked for longer than 5 minutes at a place like the citadel, assuming we're even able to get in, so you're either going to have to stay there or go with me." Mel nods her head back to the mercs sitting around a table, "Sans the vorcha, they can come with you, I'll have no need for them if we decide to split ways."

You consider your options, "But what about I.D's? I know Citadel Security is rather lax, but we can't just enter unannounced."

With a laugh Mel has to pull her hands away from the piloting console, "You really haven't traveled much have you? CSEC couldn't give less of a care unless you're trying to enter the presidium."

Ultimately the decision is your's, as you are the one with the gun to Mel's back, what will you do?

>Ditch Mel at the Citadel, you know she's just waiting to stab you in the back.
>Tag along with Mel, though you'll have to forego your plans of the citadel.

I vote tag along with Mel. Citadel space is NOT the place we wanna be without any friends.
>>
>>30099640
Implying that tagging along with a Quarian terrorist that tried to kill us several times is any better.

And the citadel will be too preoccupied with dealing with the Rachni to be chasing us.

I vote citadel
>>
>>30099660
Bro, this is a place where Asari have power.

We are on the run from Asari.

I vote leave the citadel, preferably not alone.
>>
>>30099640
We also have to think about where we're going to go, the terminus systems are too dangerous since we basically just gave Boss the finger, and Citadel space has the Asari.
>>
>>30099685
see
>>30099660

Rachni conflict is bound to happen sometime soon, the Asari won't be searching for us.

Also the Saren attack citadel 9/11 hasn't happened yet so they don't even register people that enter. Mel seems pretty confident about Csec not caring either
>>
Rolled 4

>>30099697
The Traverse. Neither Terminus nor Citadel space. Plenty of remote colonies, and it'll turn into hell once the Rachni show up. Plenty of places to hide...for a bit.

When the Rachni wars happen, then we can wade into Citadel space.

>>Tag along with Mel, though you'll have to forego your plans of the citadel.
>>
>>30099761
I like how the thread changed from "CITADEL!" to "CITADEL BAD!" in the span of one night.

But I'm going to throw my vote in for the citadel, f we want to go freelance then we need a crew and ship of our own. That isn't piloted by an insane quarian super-cunt. And flying around in the traverse would offer none of that.

"You wouldn't even if you could." She replies with an unnerving look. "Now then, Mrs.Indecisive, where to?"

>Discuss potential locations, I'll throw up a vote in 10 minutes.
>>
>>30099854
Attican Traverse. A colony somewhere out there. Also, ask Mel where she's planning on going?
>>
>>30099854
The way I see it, the Traverse like anon said earlier would be a good place, but we might get caught up in rachni battles which would fucking suck

Citadel space is out of the question for the moment,

The terminus systems would be away from the Rachni wars, and if we steer clear of Omega we could join a merc group.
>>
>>30099902
>steer clear of Omega

I vote the Traverse, moniter the nets. Maybe work with Mel. If we work with the Ahn'Qui, we can at least have allies to call on should shit go down.
>>

Traverse is pretty unanimous here, so I'm just going to update.

Plotting a course through the Attican Traverse, the Ship's VI offers a rather large information bank on the area. As Mel sets a course to the nearest Relay, you begin poring through the info.

- The Attican Traverse -

Widely renowned as the Citadel Space's frontier for colonization efforts, the Transverse is the pinnacle of resource rich planets and Prothean technology. Many mining corporations and archaeologists alike have made their fortunes in the lawless areas as well as lost their lives, due to the close proximity of the truly violent Terminus Region who's constituents regularly invade, loot, and destroy colonies, mining expeditions, and archaeological dig-sites.

The vast majority of the traverse is unmapped, but access has been shown through several relays into the following regions:

The Hades Nexus - This region holds the highest interest by Volus and Quarian mining groups due to its highly valued resource planets, along with numerous colonies dotting its systems.

The 'Shadow Sea' - Primarily empty, but has been known to house many prothean ruins. Due to strange lobbying efforts by the Hanar, no official colonization has been commenced.

The Maroon Sea - Put on the map by the corporation 'Gethil', the Quarians mass-produce their robotic minions dubbed "The Geth" in droves, making this the most secure area in the Traverse with high colonization rates.

The Ismar Frontier - This region is unique in-that it is owned primarily by the Asari. The purpose of this ownership is unknown as the matriarchal congresses keep records of the area highly classified.

Cont.
>>
>>30100477
Sentry Omega - Salarians prize the area for it's rather odd amount of garden worlds, and has a fully functioning colony on the southern hemisphere of the planet 'Virmire'. Colonization efforts have just begun to gain traction in the region, but the constant threat of mercenary attacks has put legislation on hold.

Which region appeals to you the most?

Shadow Sea! The hanar did something similar in ME1 in a news report or something, they use lobbying efforts to protect major prothean ruins. Not to mention that means it will be empty save for the Hanar-Drell that might be there, and probably mercs.

After a voyage several hours long, the Mass Effect Relay connecting to the Hades Nexus finally comes into view and Mel transmits data to the relay to activate it. Quickly enough, the relay flashes brighter as you pass by and are connected to the swirling mass of eezo at it's core, flinging you through in seconds to the Hades Nexus.

But what do you see on the other side?

Absolute chaos.

Ships ranging in the dozens are locked in battle, noticeably Quarian and Volus frigates are being massacred by vessels covered in what seems to be a brown carapace similar to arthopods you've studied back in college, spikes poking out of the points where the armor converges along with several large guns dotting the surface. Luckily the attacking ships seem to be exiting the area, with two frigates cleaning the area of remaining ships. A volus trading vessel notices you and sends out a distress signal for your help, as do a trio of unarmed mining frigates. The two unknown military vessels split, one heading for each group.

>Flee to an adjacent solar system, no need to get caught in this conflict.
>Command Mel to attack the the unknown frigate heading for the volus ship.
>Save the Quarian miners
>Save both despite the risks.
>Destroy the Volus, Quarians, and unknown ships, more loot for us.

"Is there any chance we can help?" You hurriedly ask Mel as the ships slowly get closer to their marks. After fiddling with the console for a moment Mel nods, "We can more than likely take on atleast one of them since we are armed somewhat well, and possibly save both with some difficulty." You make a silent thanks to the Goddess for your intuition in picking the more heavily armed ship back on Omega.
