Thing with names is, you see one person with a name, then maybe another person has one, then you take a name for yourself to help keep track of people, and it just spreads. I'm all for anonymity, but that doesn't necessarily mean we can't take on a name for a specific thread or conversation. It helps keep track of specific posters a lot better than awkward reply chains, and it's useful in certain circumstances. Maybe two specific people are arguing a point that the rest of the thread doesn't feel like talking about. Maybe it helps keep track of traffic in terms of people in the thread, rather than number of posts. Maybe it can lend a feel of fleeting friendship in a smaller thread with very few posters.

At any rate, people having names gives a markedly different feel than EVERYTHING being marked anonymous, and if I see people using names, I don't mind joining in. Personally, I don't trip, won't use the same name across different threads, or even have a name on for all of my posts, but names ARE a feature of the site that I do enjoy using (when applicable).
