You are Flying officer Julian Reber of the Royal Air Force. You joined the RAF to fight the BETA, aliens who dominate the Eurasian continent and who threaten to exterminate human civilization. You've spent the last few months fighting, winning and surviving, with only a few short breaks in between the missions and sudden emergencies. Today is one such break.

You've just finished sorting out the paperwork for your Tornado's routine maintenance and projected fuel and ammunition expenditure, but as much as you'd like to slack off and do nothing, your schedule isn't that convenient. You get off your uncomfortable military-issue chair and stretch your muscles to ease the cramps.

Group captain Hall still hasn't found any new officers to reform Bedivere squadron, and as far as you know, he still wants to fast track Knight's career. Knight's a good operator, but she still needs to build her confidence and you're not sure how she'd perform out on the field. She wasn't supposed to be personally participate in a combat mission at least until you received a Tornado, but the loss of Bedivere squadron made things complicated. You could take the rest of your time off to program and test a dedicated tactnet program Knight could use from your Tornado.

There's also the issue of the BETA reactor components you salvaged. Mary said they would be ready for more in-depth analysis soon, but you're one of the most talented engineers in the base, so she'll probably need your help. You could check up on her and see if she's ready to get to work on G-element production, the power plant or the computer unit. This would probably accelerate her pet project, the ZEF-19 Excalibur.

You'd also need Mary's help for Knight's tacnet, so you can only pick one or the other.

It feels like it's going to become necessary to have her in the field before the Excalibur is complete whether or not we focus on fast-tracking it, and having the infrastructure in place to make that worthwhile enough to justify getting her into the field earlier is probably more valuable than getting the Excalibur's development complete a week or two earlier.

>Looks like a tie, but the Computer unit research was winning when I started writing.

Bedivere's situation is unfortunate, but the remaining squadrons have been holding things together well enough so far. Project Round Table can keep going for a while longer without reinforcement. Hopefully.

That leaves the BETA reactor. Out of the three components you've identified, the computer unit seemed like it would be the easiest to work with. You'd need to plug the G-element fabricator to a nuclear power plant to jump start it, and you're not sure if the actual power plant would work without G-elements to get it working.

You drop the paperwork off at the central office and head for the hangars to find Mary.

The mechanics seem to be working at a leisurely pace, which must be a nice change for them, after the havoc caused by the last BETA incursion. There are still regular TSF patrol heading out, but combat has been rare, so it's mostly just been refuelling and standard maintenance. It probably won't last, so you can't blame them for enjoying the quiet times.

You find Mary in her office, working on the routine maintenance schedule. She looks up when you enter and she smiles at you.

"Good afternoon, Julian," she says. "How can I help you?"

>"I was about to ask you the same question. How's work on the BETA computer coming along?"

"I was about to ask you the same question." You sit in front of Mary's desk and leans forward. "How's work on the BETA computer coming along?"

"I was wondering if you were going to ask about that." She pulls some folders out of her cabinet and hand them to you. "Here's our current findings, based on our existing sensor technology. We were just about to start jury-rigging more specialized equipment."

The report doesn't tell you much you didn't already know. It seems like the computer sends a wireless signal through long-range electromagnetic induction. There isn't any information on the computer's interior components yet; no one wanted to risk damaging it, and understanding its wireless transmission capabilities would be extremely useful.

"Do you have anything specific in mind," you ask.

"Jamming, interception and transmission are the obvious applications," Mary says. "We're also interested in the computer proper, but we're not sure when we should crack it open. The sooner we get it done, the sooner we can try to use the technology to enhance our own computers, but..."

"Figuring out the enemy's communications would be an incredibly valuable asset."

"That's right."

You don't know how long it'll take you to build some custom sensors to jam, intercept or broadcast the computer's wireless signal, but it'll probably take a while. Then there's the computer itself. You'll need to have a look at the insides eventually, but you're not sure if you should do it sooner rather than later.

Well, that's not your immediate problem.

>See if you can figure out how to intercept and decrypt the transmissions.

"You know, I think I'm in the mood for some xenocryptography," you say.

"And I just so happen to have the only alien computer transmitted on the planet," Mary says. "Well, of the ones that aren't in alien hands anyway."

"Let's see what we can do with it then," you say.

Mary stands and leads you to the research hangar. Physically, she's more distant than she usually is, but the way she looks at you is much more casual and... kinder, you suppose. The two of you talk about your family as you walk.

"My parents should still be somewhere in London," you say. "Most EU governments keep an office there, to coordinate with the military. I don't see them very often, but at least I know I don't need to worry about them."

"My father works in aeronautics," Mary says. "He's been working on a... special project in America for the last few years. My mother tries to visit when she can, but with the war going on, travelling can be difficult for civilians."

"I'm surprised you haven't called any favours to get her over," you say.

Mary laughs softly.

"I'm very professional about the illicit favours I ask," she says.

The special containers are as you remember them: large, concrete boxes wrapped around a Faraday cage or two. The major difference is that now, there's more equipment inside and outside the box. You put on a paper of retinal laser glasses and the computer displays appear in your sight. Mary gives you a list of the equipment you have at your disposal.

With the two of you working together, you should be able to build something to intercept the transmission before your break is over.

The two of you spend the rest of the day working on enhancing the sensors. You make some progress, but it still takes you a few days to get the kinks worked out. You spend most of your waking moments in the labs and return to your room tired, but excited about the project. Elaine checks up on you every now and then to make sure you're fine, but leaves you to your work. She seems to be spending more time with Knight.

You finally manage to duct tape something that can catch a clear signal from the BETA computer, but that just begins the hard part. You compare the signal to just about every single code you can, trying to figure out the sequence it's transmitting. It takes up most of what's left of your so-called time off, but eventually, you realize that it's transmitting data on the gravitational pull of the Earth, the speed of its rotation and the computer's location.

"So basically... this is a clock," you say.

"A clock and a GPS," Mary says. "I must admit it's a tad bit underwhelming, but it's the first time we've ever cracked a BETA transmission of any kind."

"I'm sure it'll come in useful eventually, but what now?"

Mary shrugs.

"I'd say that depends on you," she says. "We can probably fit one of the receivers to a Tornado, if you want to test it further. A full BETA reactor would probably have more information for us to decode."

A full BETA reactor is currently located in the Lyon Hive.

One of the more interesting parts of this realization is that this transmitter is capable of broadcasting even through the walls of an entire BETA hive.

Which means if we are able to reverse engineer it, we might not necessarily have to be out of contact with CIC during hive infiltrations.

"Technically, we are within a few hundred miles of Lyon," Mary says.

"Fine, two hundred miles to start and I'll see from there." You take off your glasses and the computer displays disappear. "Can you get Hall to authorize a mission?"

"Of course, I'll speak with him immediately."

You escort Mary to the mean building and she goes to meet with Group captain Hall in his office, leaving you to figure out how the hell you're going to pull this off. The last time you went this close to Lyon, you ended up finding another Hive by accident. You go some excellent loot out of it, but you'd rather not stumble upon another one just yet.

You also need to decide whether or not you want to bring help. TSFs are supposed to deploy in elements at a minimum, but this was your idea alone and you're not sure if you should drag Elaine into it.

There's no way in hell you can pull this off on your own, even if it means you have to drag Elaine into it. It's too early for dinner, so you decide to check out your room first. If she's not there, you'll probably have to go to the Cerberus side of the base.

Fortunately, Elaine is in your room, lounging in her underwear, talking with Knight, who's thankfully wearing her service dress. The two of them wave at you as you enter.

"How's your work going, Julian," Elaine asks.

"I need to take a Tornado within about a hundred miles of Lyon," you say. "Want to come?"

The two of them look at you like you're completely insane - which you are - and then sigh.

"Just let me get dressed," Elaine says.

"I'll get on the CIC," Knight says. She looks at the two of you as she leaves. "Good luck."

"Can you at least tell me why we need to fly a Tornado to Lyon," Elaine asks.

"Mary and I think we can intercept and decrypt BETA transmission." You hand Elaine her flight jacket. "We've gotten something from the computer unit we recovered, but we want to see if we can get more information from a full reactor."

"I guess it at least sounds worth the risk."

You have Elaine as backup and Knight needs to run the CIC; you'll need satellite coverage of your approach, among other things your current Tornado can't provide. However, you could offer to let Mary ride along in your TSF. After all, this is mostly her show.

You might as well ask Mary if she wants to come along. This is her project and you might need her help later on.

You walk back to the hangars with Elaine alongside you. Mary is waiting for you by your Tornadoes. She greets you as you arrive.

"We'll have the improved sensors installed in short order," she says. "They'll be ready by the time you're done changing."

"All right thanks," you say. "And... I was wondering if you'd be interested in coming with us, since this is primarily your project."

Both women raise an eyebrow at you, but Elaine says nothing. Mary stammers for a moment, but ultimately accepts.

"I... certainly," she says. "Just let me find a fortified suit."

With that, she follows you to your lockers.

Back when you were a cadet, you quickly learned that there were two kinds of women in the RAF: the kind who gave no fucks about changing around men, and the ones who did. Elaine is the former, but Mary is apparently the latter. She covers herself with a towel as she undresses and makes sure to keep Elaine between the two of you. You simply turn away from her to give her some privacy.

You're quite surprised when Mary follows you to your TSF instead of going with Elaine.

"I thought you'd rather ride with another woman," you say.

"This isn't as embarrassing as the lockers." Despite her assurances, Mary is blushing bright red. "Besides, your Tornado has the equipment. I'd be useless if I was riding with Robinson."

You pull out the passenger harness and hook Mary in. She fidgets in your lap for a bit, but quickly settles down to focus on your TSF's HUD.

Knight contacts you with a mission update. She's obviously surprised to see Mary with you, but she doesn't appear to be angry.

"Arthur 2, Arthur 3, this is Arthur Crown," Knight says. "I am uploading a flight path to the Lyon Hive. This is a recon mission only. Do not engage the enemy."

"Here's the plan," you say. "We're going to go out slow and check for a transmission every hundred miles or so. If we're lucky, we'll catch something without having to get too close to the Hive. If we're unlucky, we'll get ambushed on our way there. Any questions?"

"You don't have to worry about an ambush," Knight says. "I should be able to detect incoming BETA long before they reach you."

"Thanks, Knight," Elaine says. "I don't have any questions. Let's just do this."

Your TSFs exit the hangar and get ready for transport across the strait. You look down to Mary as you wait.

"You've flown in a TSF before, right?"

"Between simulators and actual training, I've had about 50 hours," Mary says.

Fifty hours isn't a lot, but it's enough to get used to the feeling. As long as you don't do anything crazy, you shouldn't have to worry about Mary passing out, especially since she's wearing a fortified suit.

You cross over to the Calais base and take the lead.

"As planned, we're heading straight to Lyon and stopping every hundred miles or so," Elaine says. "Let's go."

In order to conserve fuel, you use your TSF's legs and boosted jumps to get you within 400 miles of Lyon, the first checkpoint. You run your sensors at full power once you reach the waypoint, but you don't get much. You can pick up the Lyon reactor's transmission - or something that looks like the Lyon reactor's transmission - but from what you can tell, it's the equivalent of static.

"Arthur 2 and Arthur 3, this is Arthur Crown," Knight says. "Be advised, it appears as if approximately 1000 BETAs have gathered at the 300 mile line and approximately 5000 are gathering at the 200 mile line. Composition of either group is unknown at this time."

"Wonderful," you say. You study the satellite image Knight uploaded to your HUD.

"This looks... bad," Mary says.

It probably does, but you've seen worst. Still, you were ordered not to engage the enemy and this does complicate things.

1K is somewhat manageable, but I'm not sure it would be worthwhile to try and get through the denser, smaller perimeter at the 200-mile mark.
>>
>>30289629
You were ordered not to engage, you don't think you can just rush through the formation and you need to finish this mission. You need another way to Lyon.

"Knight, can you give us an alternative route?"

"Maybe," she says. "Just give me a moment."

The three of you wait for Knight to check her displays and map out another route for you.

"Yes, there's something," she says. "The route to the 300 mile line will take you close to some BETA groups, but you should be able to make it, and you'll be clear after that."

"I'll take it." The new route appears in your HUD. "Elaine, have you got the new path?"

"Yeah, I got it," she says. "It looks like it should be fine."

You lead Elaine around the gathered BETAs and make your way to the 300 mile line. Again, you set your TSFs down and try to get a transmission from the Hive, but once again, you get nothing but static.

However, you then make a straight line to the 200 mile line and finally get a clear transmission that your sensors can pick up. You can't fully decrypt the transmission yet, but it looks like a series of coordinates and times.

"These look like deployment orders," you say.

"Seems so," Mary says. "The parts that are still encrypted are probably unit designations."

"We can worry about those later," you say. "Knight, is our path back clear."

"The original path is still obstructed, but the second path I gave you is still clear," Knight says.

You hesitate for a moment, but curiosity overtakes you.

"What about the path to the Hive?"

Her image on the HUD is small, but you can see her bite the inside of her lip. She doesn't want to answer that question.

"There are approximately 1000 BETA located at the 100 mile line, and another 1000 located around the nearest gate to the side." She pauses for a moment. "Please don't try it."

Mary looks at you, but says nothing.

The current data you have is redundant with your satellite feeds. You have to analyze and decode all of it before you get any new information about long-term BETA movements.

"Don't worry, I'm not stupid." You open a channel to Elaine's TSF. "Elaine, we're returning to base. We have what we came for."

"I'm very pleased to hear that, Julian," she says.

You turn your TSFs around and go back to the long route. You proceed cautiously until you're far from Lyon, but once Knight confirms your route is clear, you relax and fly at a more casual speed. It'll be a long flight back, so you have some time to talk with Wright, if you want.

I thought the top of her foot was like, the bunny's tail. And then her stretched out right leg was the left leg, the guy's arm was the bent right leg. His thumb was the anus, his other hand was spreading it. Then her calf was the body, and the thigh was the arm.

I'm drinking rum. Appleton Estate Extra. It's pretty okay.

This probably isn't going to be pleasant, but you need to talk about it eventually. You double-check to make sure you don't have a channel open to Elaine or Knight and ask Mary the question that's been on your mind.

"I know you don't like talking about it, but I would like to know what's bothering you."

Mary only nods.

"I thought you would," Mary says. "And you do need to know. Everyone does. I just need a moment to sort this out."

You place one hand on Mary's back to support her and pilot your Tornado with one hand while she gathers her thoughts.

"My grandfather... he's a mathematician," she says. "He was part of a project to understand how the BETA communicate and think. They called it Alternative I. It didn't work, so a different team of scientists tried to understand BETA physiology. That was Alternative II. My grandfather wasn't directly involved with them, but because of his involvement with Alternative I, he's been involved with all iterations of the Alternative Plan in one way or another."

"So Alternative II failed," you say.

"That's right," Mary says. "They only learned that the BETA are carbon-based and that there's little point in common between BETA strains. With Alternative III... I can't tell you the details, but we learned that the BETA don't even consider humans to be alive. After that... after that..."

Mary is no longer looking at you, or at anything, really. Her breathing comes in staggered gasps and you can see her sweat profusely. Your HUD indicates that her heart rate is shooting up. Textbook panic attack.

According to your GPS, you're 30 minutes from base. You need to keep Mary going for at least that long, and you don't trust the drugs to calm her down. You pull her closer to you and pat her back to try to calm her down.

"Mary, you need to listen to me and do as I say," you say. "First, you have to control your breathing."

Her left arm flails for a bit, but she puts it on your shoulder and squeezes firmly. Her breathing slowly calms down and her heart rate lowers.

"I'm sorry," she says. "What my grandfather and father did... I just can't forgive it..."

"It's fine," you say. "You don't have to talk about it anymore."

"Thank you," Mary says. "Let's... let's just get back to base. I want to work on the data as soon as we're back."

"Sure thing."

Mary closes her eyes and presses against you, her breathing long and slow. She's almost asleep by the time you get back to the hangar and you need to help her out of her harness, but even though she's no longer panicking, she's still covered in sweat and her face looks pale.

As you exit your Tornado, Mary leaning on you slightly for support, you meet up with Elaine. She looks at you and you mouth 'panic attack' to her, hoping Mary won't notice. Elaine's expression doesn't waver, but she slides in next to Mary and wraps one arm around her to support her.

"Come on, Wright," Elaine says. "I'll help you peel this thing off."

"I don't-"

"Yes, you do."

Elaine pulls Mary ahead and you stay back to give them some privacy. By the time you get to the locker, it looks like the ladies have already gotten change. You hear only one shower stall, and you don't want to interrupt them. As much as you feel like a mess, you can wait to shower in your room.

>(cont.)
>>
>>30291672
You head right back out after you change your uniform and have your Tornado's flight recorder sent to the research lab so you can get to work on it.

As you suspected, the data contains information on the movement of BETA troops for the next several weeks. You don't know how long it'll be valid, but the EU should get one or two good ambushes out of it. Maybe more.

"You shouldn't use someone else's equipment without their permission, you know," Mary says from behind you.

"Sorry," you say. "I thought Elaine would do a better job of looking after you, and I don't think you should be worried about work right now, so..."

"It's fine." Mary smiles. "I had dinner with Elaine and Vivian, and now I can get some sleep. Thank you."

"My pleasure," you say. "I can handle the rest of the data."

"There is one more thing," Mary says. "Do you think... do you think there is an alternative to this war?"

>"No, there isn't. It's either us or the BETA."
>"There must be. We just need to find it."

>Mary Wright has unlocked TSF piloting.

You categorize the data as much as you can be bothered to and dump it all in a cardboard box. The pencil pushers can figure the rest of it out.

It's incredibly late when you're done, but the main office is always open. You drop your package off for the analysts and the clerk on staff locks it up in a safe until someone can come by and pick it up. You get a short break from it in the meantime.

You also take the time to check your mailbox. You find a temporary transfer notice assigning you back to Cranwell for a short tour as an aggressor pilot. It's not due for several weeks, so you'll probably get pulled into whatever operation command comes up with after they have a look at the data you collected. At least the next time you head to the battlefield, you'll be able to look forward to seeing Owens and Pentecost again.
