It is the year 22XX and Humanity has reached the stars. Alas, even though they have attained the lofty goal of interstellar travel, mankind has yet to conquer it’s baser instincts.

Humanity is ruled by ultra-Corporations. Some own continents. Some own multiple worlds. But no matter who you are, everyone is a citizen-employee somewhere. The qualms that beset corporations of the past, copyright infringement, tech theft, still exist. If anything, they are amplified by the scale of the players.

Without government to turn to for legal recourse and separated by millions and billions of miles, corporations have turned to less savory solutions to resolve disputes. You are one of those solutions.

You are an elite mercenary, also known as a High Impact Public Representative, of the StrikeOut Company, a group of mercenaries who accept contracts and missions from the highest bidder. You are launched out of a spaceship in a drop pod filled with bright orange and highly toxic gel. You crash land into the target’s facilities, make a mess, do your job, and then get the hell out.

You are a Fall Guy. You are a Deniable Asset.

Eyes open. You awake to find yourself lying in a very comfy bed, white sheets spread out on top of your like fresh snow, albeit much warmer and drier. You smile and sit up. Medical equipment pressed against calming peach colored walls look back at you, their LEDs blinking in a friendly fashion. You yawn, breathing in the air, smelling of fresh laundry, and stretch before lifting your right arm and waving back at them.

You stop and stare at your hand. Something isn’t…

The thought flees as quickly as it arrives, worry and concern melting away in the pleasantly warm air. You’d say that now isn’t the time for such thoughts, were you even to remember that you had them. Smiling blissfully, you contemplate the ceiling, the LEDs providing a soothing approximation to natural light. Birds chirp softly in the background. Obviously synthesized, but a nice touch none the less. You really don’t feel like leaving your bed just quite yet. It’s so soft and comfy after all…

Just as you’re about to turn over and tuck in for some more rest, you hear a twittering of laughter. Looking to your right, you see the door to your room open, light pouring into a darkened hallway. A girl with long black hair and a rosy complexion is standing in the rectangle of light, laughing. You smile vacantly as she chortles for a few more seconds. You don’t think she’s laughing at you, she seems like a nice girl. The girl stops laughing and looks at you with an excited smile, the sort that she might reserve for her favorite cousin or brother. She takes to skipping steps back before beckoning you with her free hand, an impish smile on her face.
>>
“Follow me!”

The girl prances away, out of the rectangle of light. As she leaves you think you catch a glimmer of silver hovering around her neck, as if its about to take wing. You rise up from your bed and hurry to the door, disregarding the fact that all you have on right now is some underwear and a hospital gown. You stand at the threshold of your door, glancing down the darkened hallway in both directions. Then, to your right you see a flash of silver. You are about to pursue when a soft giggle echoes from your left. You look around in confusion. Both directions are equally dark, equally indistinguishable. Which way did she go?

>>30377698

>>30377698

>>
You decide to go to the left. They don’t like noise. You stop in midstep, eyes widening. Why did you think that? What could have prompted such a cliched horror statement like that. Shaking your head, you snort before looking back over your shoulder. “What, am I being pursued by librarians or something?”

Chuckling to yourself, you jog forward, bare feet slapping against the metallic floor. The echoing sounds like an industrial massage parlor. In the back of your mind, you note that the floor isn’t cold to the touch at all. On the contrary, its just like the bed, pleasantly warm. You jog on, despite the all encompassing darkness. On some instinctive level you know the way forward, failing to blunder into a single wall or open door despite the total blackness. You begin to breathe more heavily as you jog, still following the sound of the fae laughter. It’s getting hotter in here, the air thick and moist. You need to work out some more, get into better shape. Short jogs like this shouldn’t be a problem at all.

Despite the worsening atmosphere you jog on, determined to overcome your weakness. After what must have been at least a quarter of an hour more of jogging, you notice that the girl’s laughter has changed. It’s barely perceptible, a slight shift in tone, so gradual you failed to notice until just now. More gasping, less joyful.

The air grows thicker.
>>
You turn a corner. In the distance there is a pool of light. Two splotches are within it. Too far away to discern anything but their existence. You begin to run now, legs pumping as you move towards the light. The faster you go, the more quickly the girl’s vocalizations change from laughter to sobbing, twittering bursts lengthening into gasping cries. You speed up, the air is thick and hot and wet, like you’re running through a swamp. A small part of your brain clings to the belief its all just a matter of fitness. You know better though. The floor has been getting warmer too.

You slow to halt just outside of the pool of light. The girl is hunched over a body, hands pressed against her eyes, sobbing openly. Long black hair obscures her face, hanging down, brushing against the armored torso. You stare down, some deep sense of fear binding your tongue. You mouth soundlessly as you extend a hand to the girl. Suddenly, she is looking at you.

This is not the same girl who lead you down the hallway. Her skin is darker, almond shaped eyes narrowed at you in accusation. You can see the wound on the body’s neck now, cherry red against the black environment suit. The girl raises a trembling hand, an index finger pointed at you in terrible judgement.

“You,” she hisses, her face contorted into a grotesque mask of sorrow and anguish, “You could have saved BaBo.”

The exclamation shakes you out of your stupor. Just a girl. Just a little girl who misses her father. You swallow your fear and kneel down next to her, taking care to stay out of the light. Your voice comes out is a rasp. "This is the life mercenaries choose, little one. If it's any consolation for you, I will likely die far away from my family. You at least have the chance to bury yours."

The girl does not respond to your words for a few seconds, her arm merely falling back to her side, finger now directing her fury into the ground. She stares at you, before her eyes flood with tears once more. A renewed howl of anguish sends you reeling, what composure you managed to gather shattered by the wail. You fall back onto your ass. The shift in position is exaggerated a thousandfold, and suddenly the girl and her father’s body are meters away, instead of within arms reach. You reach out with your right arm, hand extended in a supplicative shield. “I tried kid, I really did. But I was lucky to just get out alive, I couldn't save anyone. I'm sorry. You-”

Your words are cut off by another howl. Still anguished, but less sad. An agonized roar of fury and misery. “No,” the girl shrieks, her voice warbling and modulating outside of the human range, “No! BaBo died and all you cared about was stealing his money!”

Your hand rotates until it’s palm is facing the girl, a desperate attempt to ward her off. “No, I tried to sa-”

“You wrote him off! The minority always has to die in horror movies! You wrote my BaBo off!”
>>
The girl’s voice is no longer human. You watch, eyes bulging in horror as her cheeks rip open, revealing a maw of fangs. Dr. Tran’s daughter unleashes a feral shriek, hot air blasting out from her mouth as though from a furnace, scalding you. You shout in pain as she lunges forward, spitting and hissing.

And just as she does, your hand is no longer empty, raised in fear and terror. It is clamped around something, a heavy and familiar weight. You squeeze it on instinct, eyes clenched shut. And the world falls silent. You feel something bump into your leg. Opening one eye, you look down at the body.

You scream in shock and jerk upright, eyes darting around, looking for an exit. A lift to your left, the fluorescent bulb flickering above it. Two large heavy doors to your right, faded red lettering next to them indecipherable.

You stumble back, away from the body of Dr. Tran’s daughter. Already steam is rising from it, a rotting stench infusing the air. You gag as you hurry towards the thick doors, hands slamming against them in desperation. Your Model 223 shatters into a thousand shards of metal as the butt strikes the doors. You stare at your empty hand in horror. Nothing. No way to defend yourself now.

The smell of rot is growing stronger.

You pound against the doors, eyes watering from the odor. “Please please please please,” you moan, unable to repress a hysterical tremor in your voice as you beg the door for mercy. The door obliges you, sliding open. You stumble through it and collapse onto the brilliantly lit floor on the opposite side. Turning around, you see the doors slam shut just as the girl rises to her feet once more. You can hear her clawing at the door, desperate to reach you once more. A few gasping breaths, then you rise to your feet, shaking.

“Hail up, mon.”

Your heart skips a beat. You freeze in place. No. It can’t be. He’s dead.

“What ya up to mon? Been a while.”

No. No. He can’t be here.

“C’mon, you a batty man or something? Turn an’ box me.”

You swallow and turn around. Dreads is standing in the middle of the cavernous waiting room where you… but no, that can’t have happened. It’s right here with you, you can see it as your raise it in a boxing guard. Dreads roars with laughter. “Seems I ain’t be the only duppy here.”

The giant slams his fists together, before raising his hands in invitation. Debris is scattered all around the room, broken chairs and empty clothes stained a red brown. You hope another weapon from your arsenal will materialize before you. None does. Dreads cackles, his twisted mirth echoed and amplified in the waiting room.

You lunge to the side, rolling over towards a pile of broken chairs. You seize one and fling it at Dreads. Or you would if your hand wasn’t so sweaty. The heat and panic causes the chair to slip free of your grasp and go spinning into a wall, not even the wall Dreads is standing in front of. The Giant roars with laughter, refusing to make a move. Cursing, you throw caution to the wind and charge the giant. Some small, more lucid, part of your brain figures that you can get away with something this foolhardy right now. Dreads moves with impossible speed, and suddenly you’re in the air, a massive metal hand wrapped around your torso.

“Ya got back wheels mon, I’ll give ya that,” Dreads chuckles as he squeezes down on you slightly, “But no brains,” the grip tightens into a vice. You can feel your ribs creaking under the pressure. You gasp for air, lungs incapable of inflating. Dreads loosens his grip for a half second, and oxygen floods into your chest. Then he squeezes, forcing it all out again like a balloon. The room gets even hotter. You cough and gag, completely winded and unable to reinflate your chest. Dreads chuckles and brings his face close to yours.

But its not Dreads any more. It’s you. And you are bearing a terrible grin. a rictus of furious, sadistic pleasure. Your eyes bulge as they look into their double’s. The same shade, but lacking the vital spark of humanity, dull and lifeless. Uncaring. The grin widens, and you watch as the corner’s of your doppelganger’s mouth split open, stretching back to the cheekbones. Hot rancid air blows across your face, wet and rotten, as if breathed by something dead. You can’t even gag. The massive metallic hand loosens its grip on you once more, and the maw lunges forward.
>>
You open your eyes. The maw is still there, suspended in mid air. You look around in confusion. Droplets of spittle float in the air, glimmering in the light. You feel a coolness on your cheek and turn to see the strange Pear shaped Alien floating next to you, it’s off white shirt glowing slightly in the light.

“H-hey.”

The alien says nothing. Instead you feel the metallic fingers slip off of your torso. You take a shuddering breath, your lungs swelling with air. You watch as the doppelganger slips away into the distance. The light is fading, and the world is going dark once more. You look at the Alien questioningly. “Why?”

A voice in your mind. “Dreams must end.”

The Alien begins to slip away into the darkness. You reach out to it with your hand, desperate to pull it back. Only there is no hand. Just a stump.

You jerk up with a gasp, sitting bolt upright in bed. There is a loud squeak and a thud as someone falls to the floor. You look around, immediately alert. The same shite sheets and peach walls. The same rows of friendly LEDs. The same room.

Well not quite. The last one didn’t have a small blonde woman sitting on the floor, rubbing her head next to a shattered mug and a growing pool of coffee.

Svenja looks up at you from the floor. “You could be less aggressive about waking up Ivan. I was startled.”

“Sorry ‘bout that,” you mumble, rubbing the back your head with your left hand, “Bad dream. Here.”

You extend your right hand to help Svenja to her feet. That’s when you notice it. Despite the all the contrary sensations in your right arm, your eyes do not lie. You have no right hand. Instead your arm terminates in a bandage wrapped tightly around a stump just beneath your elbow. You stare at it for a few moments, uncomprehending. “I- I- what?”

“Oh no,” murmurs Svenja as she places a hand on your shoulder. “I was hoping they had given you enough Neurolyne to eliminate the phantom sensations.”

“Svenja,” you ask, your voice rising in pitch, “Svenja, where the fuck is my arm?”

Svenja sits down next to you and gently pushes you back into the bed, making a shushing sound. “Ivan, please try to stay calm. If you start flailing around I’m pretty sure I’d get killed. here,” Svenja turns away and reaches under the bed you’re reclined on, pulling out a mini-cryostsis unit. There is a beep and a synthesized voice announces [DELIVERING SCHEDULED SEDATIVE]. As a drug induced sense of calm washes over you, you look in through the clear panel.

You raise an eyebrow. “I assume that’s mine?”

Svenja nods at you and smiles. There is something slightly forced about it. “Indeed it is Ivan! Clayton and Marlena were barely able to get it in stasis in time. You are very lucky.”

You frown, anger dulled by the sedative to sense of mild irritation. “Not so lucky to not lose an arm in a friendly fire accident.”
>>
Svenja visibly winces at that. Probably hoped your forgot or something. “Well yes, that part was certainly poor luck. But look at the bright side! Reattaching an arm is much less expensive than growing a new one or getting a cybernetic replacement!”

You cross your arms and desperately attempt to cling to your dulled feelings of righteous anger. The sedative makes it quite difficult. Eventually your expression slips into a boyish grin. “Maybe I could get a cyber arm with a chainsaw blade.”

Elda smiles indulgently, although her eyes look pained. “Yes, yes, I suppose you could. I was going to ask you about your plans for the arm issue, but I think that might have to wait.”

You attempt to interrupt her but she cuts you off with a gesture. “And besides, several people had made requests to see you. I put them on hold until I had confirmed you were back up.”

You decide to take advantage of the fact that they’ve got you hooked up to an array of drips to see Elda. No better mental state to see her in than drugged up to the gills. You sit upright in the bed, grunting. “Yeah, maybe I can wait on getting a new arm. Who all wants to come see little old me?”

Svenja lists names before looking at you expectantly. You exhale loudly, puffing your cheeks up. “Hooo wow. Darius and Valkyrie? That can’t be good.”

Svenja makes a noncommittal noise. You continue, “so how about some warm up. Invite Elda down.”

Svenja stands up and walks up to the door leading out of your room. She pauses, then turns around to face you. “I just pinged Ms. Acerbi. She said she’ll be over momentarily. I’ll be seeing you soon Ivan.”

And with that, Svenja leaves the room. You sit around, alone, allowing your thoughts to wander. You grin up at the ceiling. “Looks like Elda’s gonna have to hear my sob story now…”

Your voice trails off just as the door opens. Elda is standing in the doorway, her expression unreadable. You swear, she has the potential to be the best poker player in Human Space.

>We getting dick fingers?
maybe a built in vibration feature

speaking of vibrating, we need to give that Ron Paul coin to Valkyrie, that will definitely let her know when we're in trouble
>>
>>30381972
This. Could we just plop a few guns or grenade launchers into the fingers and then reattach it? No sense in letting a severed arm opportunity go to waste.
>>
>>30381990
You know very well how she's going to use that coin.

and besides, it vibrates when we're in danger, she does a lot of recovery and rescue drops, its a very handy safety net for us to have

You look at Elda from across the room. She hangs back slightly, expression still unreadable. You raise your arm and wave. Your right arm. Elda puts a hand over her mouth and inhales sharply.

You try to keep a straight face. Honestly you do. But the various pain relievers and neuro-sedatives make such feats impossible. Your mouth breaks into a shit eating grin. Elda’s eyes narrow, and suddenly she’s striding across the room. You can see what’s coming, but you don’t try to stop it. She wouldn’t hit a literal cripple. Hard. You are pleased to see your stratagem paid off. Elda merely settles for flicking your forehead repeatedly. Once she finishes raising a welt on your skull she sits down next to you, expression softening from granite to limestone. “Testardo stolto. I spend hou- I mean- I- I- You! What is wrong with you! What is with all of this risk taking and daredevilry! Do you want to die?”

You quail slightly under Elda’s sudden outburst of wrath. You suppose that means she cares, but she could try being a little less abrasive about it. You try to speak up, but Elda counters you with several hard pokes into your chest, snarling various odious remarks in her native tongue. Eventually you get tired of her finger digging into your chest and attempt to remove her hand. After a second you both look down at the stump of your right arm, raised impotently towards Elda’s wrist. For the first time since waking, you feel legitimate anger flow through you, hot and hard to control. You seize Elda’s wrist with your left hand and push it away, scowling.

>I am rolling to see how well Ivan keeps his temper in check. The higher the roll, the more options you are able to vote on. So the higher the roll, the more interaction options it opens.
>3-5: You completely lose your shit at Elda. Really chew her out
>6-12: You fail to keep your temper under control, but you don’t freak out. You become cold and angry.
>13-17: Keep your temper in check, barely. You are capable of polite and neutral conversation.
>18-21: Get a good grasp on your temper. You might not much feel like joking around right now, but you can say or do just about anything else.
>22+: You maintain perfect composure. Say or do anything that you feel like

Remember, if Ivan wants to seriously bond with people or deal with this mission he needs to open up as well. This means he can't always laugh everything off. Or I mean he can, but it's probably not be the best way to establish serious relationships of any kind.

Hey, I'm not saying he's not a badass.

I'm just saying that people are driven by personal faults.

Do you think people climb Everest because they're completely content with their lives and perfectly happy and their psyches are perfectly balanced?

No - they climb the highest mountain in the world because of a pathological drive created somehow earlier in their life. Are they better for it? Obviously. Is the pathological drive still there when they climb down the mountain on the next day? Sure is.

Ah alright then. Probably then, yes.

I've noticed that there is a certain amount of competitiveness to choose the "best" dialogue options during conversation scenes, not just the funniest ones, but often times the most stoic or coolest or manliest options as well. I think flawed characters are much more interesting than perfect ones, so Ivan being a dick on occasion because he's angry, or showing weakness because he's hurt may not be rewarded in the short term, but will pay off in terms of improved relationships with other characters in the long run.

"I'm not that stubborn."

Really I think we should talk to Elda honestly about what we just went through. Humor is obviously his defense mechanism. He needs to buckle down and tell her something along the lines of a real conversation.
>>30382449
I think Ivan really enjoys the life of a Merc, I think he's previous options at where he's from were almost Nil. Hell what did Ivan want to do with his life, he studied pop culture from two centuries ago. He's college educated I'm pretty sure, from maybe a colony world, from some po-dunk town maybe.

I think he should tell Elda that he just wants to do something important. He always wants to be the big damn hero from how we played him. Maybe we should think about why he does these things.

>>30382288
Personally I'm not against what anon said, maybe there is someone in Ivan's past that he couldn't help and it really shaped him into the person he is today.

Elda is about to continue talking when you raise a hand to stop her. “Listen Elda,” you say with the sort of bite that one normally hears from your conversational partner, “I’m terribly sorry I tried to save as many people as possible. I know, right? Stupid of me. Stupid of me thinking that I could be some sort of mercenary corprowarrior and maintain the moral high ground.”

Elda stares at you in shock, not entirely sure what to do with the Ivan sitting before her. Not entirely sure if this is even the same Ivan she constantly harangued during basic for his lackadaisical attitude and idiocy. “Ivan, you’re overreacting.”

“No I’m not Elda. No I’m not. You were right. There are clouds in my ass and my head was right there with them. I just didn’t- I’m sorry. I got Tran killed because of my idiocy. I don't know what the fuck I was thinking, trying to not kill kids on the drop.”

Elda sits back, a hand going to cover her mouth. “Kids?”

You grimace. “Yeah. Kids. Kids born on some ass backwards colony world who needed gene therapy and got gene modded into fucking cannibal mutants instead. And you know the fucking funniest part Elda?”

Elda shakes her head, eyes wide.

You look down at the stump lying on your lap. “I killed them anyway.”

You sit in silence for a few moments. It feels more like a few hours. Eventually you feel a hand on your shoulder. You look up to see Elda’s face with a most unusual expression. A sad smile?

You place your left hand on the one resting on your shoulder. You look up at Elda and smile back at her. The two of you maintain eye contact for a few seconds before you look down again. You take a few shuddering breaths, calming yourself. Elda squeezes your shoulder reassuringly. You look up at Elda, your expression pained. “God damn though. That mission was five shades of fu-”

Your words are cut off as Elda pulls you into a full hug. Stunned, it takes a moment to register. Eventually your arms rise up and squeeze back. Elda holds you for a few more seconds before relenting and releasing you. She rubs a wet spot on her shoulder, looking slightly abashed. “I-I’m sorry Ivan. It seemed like the right thing to do at the time.”

You rub your left eye with a spare hand. “Damn straight it was the right thing to do Elda. I’m all teary eyed now.”

Elda gives you a small push with her free hand, smiling slightly. “I think things may have gone worse for you than they did for me on my drop,”

Your shoulders sag, more tired than anything else. “I dunno. All I do know is that Marlena is bad luck.”

Elda’s expression darkens instantly at the mention of the name. “That she is.”

Suddenly Elda shakes herself, and her expression reforms to a friendly, if reserved, smile. “Let’s not talk about that. I heard from the doctors that you could probably get discharged from here once you decided on a new arm.”

“Oh really,” you say, perking up at the thought of leaving the clinic bed, “I wouldn’t mind that at all.”

Elda nods seriously at you. “Here. I’ll go and set things up with Doctor Barnes. You just stay put.”

Just as Elda is about to leave the room the door slides open. Darius stares down at the small rookie, puffing on a cigar. “Hey rookie,” he says.

Elda instantly straightens up and delivers a salute. “Sir!”

Darius shakes his head and laughs. It is not a mirthful laugh. “No need for the Sirs when we’re off duty, Elda. Or when we’re on duty for that matter. Valkyrie and I are here to visit Mr. Kostov here. Do you mind giving us a moment.”

That last statement was an order, not a question. Elda nods silently before backing out of your room. As she leaves, Valkyrie sidles in. The two senior mercs stare down at you.

So THATS why valerie likes us
>>
You draw up your right arm and prepare to deliver a serious, totally professional salute. The lack of hand touching your forehead reminds you that right handed salutes may be out of the question for the moment. Some what flustered by this, your left hand flops around a bit before giving a friendly, if somewhat lame, wave. Darius chuckles, this time sounding like he meant it. “Don’t worry about it rookie. Same thing happened to me back in the day.”

You sit back into your bed, more relieved by Darius’ laughter than you would have thought possible. Distant fears of pink slips vanish. You’re about to start talking when you notice Valkyrie approaching your bedside, an abnormally serious expression on her face. Before you can say or do anything her hand is between your legs, groping through the covers with an almost clinical precision. “Guh,” you grunt, more in surprise than anything else.

Valkyrie releases you and steps back, grinning at Darius, whose expression is both exasperated and weary. “Had to make sure Martian didn’t shoot off any really important bits.”

“Goddamn it woman. We’re here for serious business. Not violating employee sexual conduct codes. Again.”

Valkyrie flips back her hair and crosses her arms. “What, would you prefer to have Tin Man tag along? Stare at Ivan and not say anything for a few hours?”

Darius snorts and rolls his eyes. “I swear, all the senior mercs here are either insane or they live off of the Brick.”

You decide that now might be a good time to remind them you exist. “Hey Valkyrie, Darius. Am I getting a raise?”

Darius barks with laughter. “Yeah-huh. A raise. Funny shit rookie.”

“Aw.”

“No, we’re here for a more serious reason. You’ve been getting terrible scores on your self preservation index in your performance reports. Now I know getting shot by Martian wasn’t intentional,” Darius says, forestalling any protestations on your part, “But running into what was until about a second ago a live fire zone was foolhardy to the point of being fed lead paint chips for breakfast for thirty years.”

You frown slightly. “I’m not going to say I was being smart bu-”

“Ivan,” Valkyrie sighs, looking at you seriously, “You were being retarded. The Millenium Man does read those performance reports, you know that, right?”

You stomach plummets, taking up residence near your colon. “Th-the Millenium Man?”

“Yeah,” says Darius, stepping into the conversation, “The Millenium Man. He’s really not as terrifying as all you rookies seem to think he is. But he wanted us to let you know that he wants you to go into therapy.”

“What, like gene therapy?”

“No, like an austrian man with a beard asking you if you ever wanted to pork your mom therapy.”

“Hey now,” mutter Valkyrie, shooting Darius a look “Don’t make it seem so worthless.”

“The point is Ivan,” continues Darius, “The Millenium Man wants you to go in for therapy. Its a request, not an order. But, if you go on a drop and pull the same risky business that you’ve been doing for the past three missions, it’ll become one.”

>What say you Ivan?

Are you implying that Valerie is Fall Guy's self-insert?

Busted! Yes, my players are my waifu.

Tran, Cy, and Simge, should you ever meet her.

I'd rather not, but whats your opinion, do you think I should?

"Fine."

If it is covered by the medical plan, then I'll go. If it isn't, well, frankly, my debt comes first.

"Oh boy, I've always want to go to therapy?" Rubs chin, "So is this coming out of pocket or is this complimentary therapy?"

you must be joking. he was clearly the world Famous Dr. Tran. Star of such movies as 3 2 1 Dr Tran and OH SHIT it's Dr. Tran.

Wink at Valkyrie.
"Maybe a little physical therapy will do the trick. Seriously though, I'm a CQC specialist with a melee weapon. If I'm not in the thick of it, I'm not as effective."
>>
>>30384505
Well the last couple missions have given me a lot to think on, and I don't think I'll be doing something like that again, not without much better gear and mods anyway.

So I'd rather not see a shrink right now, although I appreciate it being a request and not an order.
>>
>>30384505
>“The point is Ivan,” continues Darius, “The Millenium Man wants you to go in for therapy. Its a request, not an order. But, if you go on a drop and pull the same risky business that you’ve been doing for the past three missions, it’ll become one.”

"Somehow, I think you want me to graduate from being rookie, and do it in one piece. All that money doesn't do any good if I can't spend it, after all. I don't think my insurance plans covers it, though. "
>>
>>30384505
So...am I the only one wondering who the Millenium Man is?

I am asking for a lore dump yes

Alright, so the vibe I'm getting is "Is it free?" and "I'll think on it."

“Well first thing… is it free? Cause I’m not about to get any further in debt here.”

Darius snorts. “Well, seems like you at least have the fiscal mindset of a merc down rookie. Yeah it’s free to us. Covered by the employee health plan.”

You grunt. “Alright. I’ll think about it.”

“I don’t really give two shits rookie,” grunts Darius as he puffs on his cigar some more, “we’re just acting as the Millenium Man’s messengers.”

Darius turns to leave. “Get better soon rookie,” he says before stopping at the door. “Valkyrie, if you’re not out of here in two minutes I’m assuming the worst and filing an HR report.”

The door slides open and Darius makes his exit. Valkyrie pouts after him. “Spoilsport,” she mutters before sidling up to you. “Hey Ivan. You ever need any personalized physical therapy, don’t hesitate to ask.”

You open your mouth to reply, which Valkyrie takes as a window of opportunity. After a few seconds of wet smacking Valkyrie breaks away and winks before walking out of your clinic room too. You lie on your bed, staring up at the ceiling, as Elda walks in. She glares back out of the room suspiciously before walking up to you. “C’mon Ivan,” she says as she leans over to pick up your duffle bag, “Doctor Barnes just cleared you to leave the clinic. We need to pick up your prescriptions and schedule a date to reattach your arm.”

“All business aren’t ya,” you say as you clamber out of bed and begin to attempt to put a shirt on. It’s pretty difficult. Eventually Elda lends you a hand, sliding the grey shirt on. “Can’t wait to get this bad boy reattached,” you mutter as you step out of your hospital room.

Alright, That's it for tonight everybody. Arm selections tomorrow. Good thread, especially once we got our friends on the East Coast back.

Sorry about the slower update times today. Next thread may be as soon as Saturday, keep an eye on the Twitter for updates.

thanks for the thread FG

After this experience for some reason I am imagining Ivan building different body parts after he is out of debt "Just in case" something were to happen.
>>
>>30385172
Funnily enough, I was brainstorming a very similar mission earlier today.
>>
>>30385026
>And that tattoo and armor paint idea sounds pretty good
They do sound good, hazard stripes on the armor or something like that, to just look badass, and the tattoo underneath, something understated, but wrapping around, maybe like a surgeons doted lines marking where to cut or something, to be a reminder of what happens when we get over eager and stop thinking with out head.
>>
>>30385242
I have a question Fall Guy

Why does it seem like our preservation techniques are only getting worse?

I mean...at first, it was like "yeah, but we're melee"
But it is getting surprisingly...worse.

I really don't want Ivan to die because we're trying to fill our role too well.
>>
>>30385286
Maybe we should load out with an assault rifle next time. Try to play it safe instead of charging head in.
>>
>>30385286
>I really don't want Ivan to die because we're trying to fill our role too well.
Yeah, other than drastically getting into debt to upgrade ourselves, I'm drawing a blank on how to not suck as much, when we're a CQC focussed fighter
>>
>>30385253
When I was younger, my brother did a thing with a red pen down his wrist - he drew a dotted line and a teeny pair of cartoon scissors - think CUT HERE lines on coupons. Small, simple, understated. You know, classy.
>>
>>30385324
fuck yes this
>>
>>30385026
Seconding the avoidance of new debt. The failed mission probably wiped out our cash reserves as is.
>>
>>30385286
Well, the second mission was a result of Grit Mode and seizing the awesome.

This most recent mission... You did better in terms of self preservation, even if you were more injured. It's all a matter of how you act, not how well you manage to avoid damage.

I think it's mostly been a result of happenstance rather than the players themselves screwing up.
>>
>>30385311
I think we should def take our full ranged loadout next time, AR+OMPS+223+nades and axe, and either be sneaky to get behind and axe, or use the guns
>>
>>30385311
We don't know how to use an AR, remember?
>>
>>30385311
That's a solid enough idea, but we're not that good with assault weapons anyway...

>>30385312
Yeah, to be a 'CQC' fighter in the future, you need heavy upgrades, as Dreads proved. We should've known that this was picking 'hard mode' for the quest.

We mentioned shotgun training, right? That would be awesome if we could do that some more. Still close range, but we don't need to run straight into combat.

>>30385356
Like I said, Fall Guy. I just don't want to lose Ivan because we try and use our CQC moves too much.
I guess I am a bit paranoid now, since he's had some time to grow on me, and I quite like him and his relationship with Elda, odd as it is.

Still waiting for the Martian to come apologize to us.
>>
>>30385372
we do, its at Tier 1 training, while our Axe and handguns/smgs are at Tier 2, what we don't know how to use would be shotguns and longguns

read the character sheet
http://pastebin.com/jW5Cn337
>>
>>30385312
Well, we're proficient in assault rifles according to the char sheet. Not as good as handguns but we could probably bring both.

>>30385372
We know how to use one better than any other ranged weapon other than handguns.
>>
>>30385383
The Martian is waiting for us to apologies for running into her line of fire.
>>
>>30385383
>We mentioned shotgun training, right? That would be awesome if we could do that some more. Still close range, but we don't need to run straight into combat.
At this point, with how expensive the MPSE and its upgrades and various ammo types are, sticking with our Model 24 AR and training/upgrading that will be cheaper

and we've got our revolver for big hard hitting shots
>>
>>30385312
>>30384597
It's a symptom of the loadout we chose way at the beginning of the quest. However, if you go back to the first thread, you'll notice that our favorite mercenary was a little more... tactical. We can make the axe work, anon just needs to think a little harder about how to use it. I think we should do one of two things: pick up a riot shield if we really like charging things, or talk to Sushi about moving unseen.
>andred Loan
Yes captcha, I dread our debt situation too...
>>
>>30385413
Right right, the Revolver. We need to use that move. Punches holes through shit, and decent range too, right?

Let's get that and assault rife next mission
>>
>>30385383
We have even less training in shotguns than ARs. I'd rather stick with our pistol for CQC and AR for medium/long range.

Buckshot is crap against body armor anyway.
>>
>>30385421
>Riot shield
Oooo that's a nice idea. If we can get a nice big slab of steel to put between us and fire, we can make our charge way deadlier on top of implants.

Is there anything like that, Fall Guy?
>>
>>30385428
Shit, it is? Well never mind then. I figured shotguns qualified as close range, since we seem to specialize there.
>>
>>30385423
>Let's get that and assault rife next mission
we've always brought both, except for this drop, where we thought we'd be doing less-lethal work

our normal loadout has been
-M223 revolver
-axe
-2x OMP smgs
-M24 AR
-AK-94 we scavenged from those guards on the moon base mission

now we've added grenades to that lineup
>>
>>30385413
I believe we have an AK-94 assault rifle.

>>30385453
It's because it's a bunch of small shots rather than one large one. Good for unarmored, but generally body armor will stop penetration. Could use slugs though.
>>
>>30385454
Do we have an M24? I'm not seeing it on the character page.
>>
>>30385453
check the char sheet...

>>30385470
>I believe we have an AK-94 assault rifle.
we do, but its not as good as the Model 24, the ak we just picky up off the floor, its a little worse for wear
>>
>>30385440
Welp, there is now. Riot Shields are sweet as hell.
>>
>>30385488
It was on there, our CQC package came with the axe, our revolver and the m24 AR, we've not lost it or replaced it yet
>>
>>30385356
Yo Fall Guy, I got a suggestion.

You have so many damn links up above, why not just have one 'Master Pastebin'? It would be a place for you to link all past pastebins, so we can check on them at any time, AND reduce the size of your OP all in one easy decision
>>
>>30385502
Since we got it for free I think Ivan should tinker with it a bit. Besides, if it's anything like modern AKs it has cheap aftermarket parts and is built to last.

And what russian would be caught dead without glorious AK?
>>
>>30385514
HELL YES

I know what I want next on our 'to drop with' list
>>
>>30385519
... that's a good fucking idea right there, anon.
>>
>>30385529
IIRC from the moon base mission, Cy or Clayton has a fancy blinged up AK-94

>>30385549
hey FG where'd the AR that came from teh CQC pack go in the pastebin?
>>
>>30385242
THANK YOU FOR VALIDATING MY MEASLY EXISTENCE.
Seriously though, I'm trying to see where I stack up as a writer, and you are a great yardstick. Of course, running a quest is a whole other level, so... Until I get around to running one of my own, I won't really know, will I? By the way, what are some challenges you've run into while writing this quest?
>>
>>30385549
See Teen Titans Quest for an example
>>
>>30385572
I don't think the CQC package came with one, unless I forgotten something, which I have been known to do.

>>30385576
Thank you very much for you kind words, anon. The hardest part of running for me at least is... directing the plot, probably. There are occasions when I simply run out of ideas for how to move the story forward. It's not even that I don't know what the next event will be, I just don't know how to string it together. For that player input can be incredibly helpful.

The other hard part is just trying to keep all of my notes straight about the setting and characters. Internal consistency can be hard to maintain when running a quest.
>>
>>30385680
>I don't think the CQC package came with one, unless I forgotten something, which I have been known to do.
Pretty sure it did, seeing as we've got training in AR's and used AR's at the range to get practice with ours, there was also some comments about Ivan being almost overloaded by the gear he was carrying in Shattered Moon, when we picked up the AK-94
>>
>>30385703
hmm, just reread the first thread and the CQC package didn't list an AR in it, no idea why I think we've had one all along
>>
>>30385721
Maybe when we practiced with M24s at the range. At least we have a looted AK.
