This is a starcraft 1 based quest. I generally try to follow lore and game, but I'm not an encyclopedia and haven't read any of the books. For weaponry and powers I’m not always going to strictly follow canon. This gives me greater freedom to allow character customisation and diversity.

I use D20, best of first three rolls, 1 and 20 are crits and cancel each other out. Skills will adjust DC, not give bonuses, for simplicity's sake. Health is narrative based on the game.

>Last time on Freelance Ghost Quest, you captured a live stalker, but chose not to tell doctor Lisa Fringers about your psychic powers to explain how you did it. You read through your files to find an awful lot of <redacted>' that shouldn't have been there, and found out you used to get mind-wiped every month despite. Despite that, you've got memories going back for at least two years and more. Then you got a nice new suit, a hunting rifle, a revolver and a machete. You docked your wraith at the Saltlake spaceport and made your official entrance into Frontier.
>There, you quickly visited Professor Haverdam, came up with a cover story and he decided to lend you an old tent and sleeping bag of his.

You accept Haverdam’s offer, and leave him be. It seems he still has some work to do before tomorrow.

It is getting late now, and nightfall arrives in roughly thirty minutes.

>1. Look for Lisa at her home, the Stalker cage or her lab (you’ll be checking all if you can’t find her, no need to specify).
>2. Go grab a bite before doing anything else, you haven’t eaten dinner yet.
>3. Go home.
>4. Write in.
>>
>>30458318

Check on the doctor, starting with the labs. Ask if she's found out something interesting a layman would understand. And if she wants more samples. And if we could get some sedatives if she does, so that any new acquisitions don't run rampant after they built up resistance to our stuns.

You figure you should check how Lisa’s doing with the Stalker, but when you pass the town square, you figure you could quickly grab something to eat now. It’s your first transaction as an actual person, not stealing something and putting money in place, and the woman at the stall eyes you curiously. You figure you’ll take something called “frog on a stick”. It looks much like it sounds. Tastes fairly good though.

Arriving at the now fully constructed cage, you see a lot of people gathered around it, looking at the stalker with mixed expressions. As you make your way to the front of the crowd, you see Lisa isn’t there, but the stalker itself still seems to be asleep. Someone did put some straw and a bit of water in there though.

Turning back, you head to the doctor’s house instead. The door opens right before you knock.

“Hello? Erm… Oh. Artemis.” It took her a moment before she realised it was you, but as she did you see her eyes darken a bit. “I guess you can come in…”

You enter and she pulls up a chair for you to sit on and goes down to sit in her sofa herself.

>1. So, how is the stalker? I saw it was still asleep?
>2. Learned anything from the Stalker already?
>3. You mentioned there’d be a reward for the capture…

we might want to consider telling her a little about how we could control the Stalker, cause its clearly got her rattled and we don't want to drive a rift between the first real 'friend' we've made
>>
>>30458804

I can see how she could be worried by our training, but she should also understand that this stuff is not easy for Artemis to talk about either. Or at least how he might be unwilling to spill too much information.
>>
>>30458892
then there's our soloution, apologise for artemis' secretiveness but make her understand that artemis doesn't really like to talk about his past
>>
>>30459055
we can be vague about it and mask it as unpleasant while letting her understand it a little and rebuilding her trust in us
>>
>>30459055

That would require for him to realize that is a good thing to do.

Why not I guess.
>>
“So, you learned anything from the Stalker yet? Preferably explained so I could understand. I saw it was still asleep.”

“Yeah, I put it on a heavy dose of sedation for a while. I’m going to slowly build it off and then keep it conscious but too weak to break through the cage. Figured it’d be the most humane way to treat it.”

“Humane? Fairly odd for you to think of that while most people around would have just preferred shooting it through head.”

“I prefer not to cause unnecessary pain. It’d be counterproductive for anyone. And yeah, I have figured out something. My suspicions were true and there’s no way those things are natural. I did a full bio scan and compared it to similar animals on different planets, and with other animals from this planet, and there’s too much of a jump. It doesn’t show signs of higher intelligence but evolutionary speaking it’s a few million years of anything else on the planet.”

“So, someone made these things?”

“Probably more like adapted them to their needs. Humans don’t have such technology though.”

“By the way, how are you doing?” Talking about her work made her a bit more open again, and you can tell she’s still bothered by your earlier refusal to explain, so you figure you could be a bit considerate. All this talking to people is still fairly strange to you.

“I’m… ok I guess. If you ever change your mind on telling me about what you did there tonight, feel free to tell me.” She gives you a quick glance, her thoughts going in the direction of ‘better not keep me waiting’. “But I guess I have other things on my mind too now. Lots of work to do. The stalker’s been keeping me busy. How about you? Sure had a change of outfit, or is that still the same suit?“

Choices in next post.

“Same suit. The old visual reminded me of my old occupation a bit too much.”

“Hmm…” She doesn’t really seem too sure how to react to that. You don’t really give her the time to come up with a response though.

“Look, before I tell you anything about my past, I should mention that 'Retirement' isn't really something anyone in my profession ever reached... both in life expectancy, and choice. I could tell you, but it’d be dangerous just to know. For you AND for me. It wouldn’t matter if you wouldn’t tell them, they have ways to find out anyway.”

You pause for a moment, giving her time to take it all in. Her surface thoughts are one and all curiosity though.

“I do. I mean, I want to know.”

>What do you tell her?

>1. Tell her everything. What ghosts are, what you were used for by the confederacy and how you were trained from childhood to be the perfect killers. Your freedom now is entirely new and still a bit strange to you.
>2. Tell her about your psychic powers and that you were used as an assassin by the confederacy and held under control by an implant. Avoid mentioning too much about the ghost program specifically.

"Have you ever heard of 'Ghosts'? Children with psychic talent, taken from their parents though threat, bribe or force. Trained intensively, augmented with various implants, put though heavy mental conditioning and frequent mind wipes. The end result is that of a highly capable and efficient Spec Ops soldier. Each trained in various ways, focused around their potential. Cloaking is powered by our Psionics, but generated by the suit. My previous “job” was to assassinate high profile dissidents and other “inconvenient” people, and provide psionic assistance on battlefields. The fall of Tarsonis meant the end of the confederacy, and I managed to get out after wiping my files. No one should know about me, theoretically. The whole free to do what I want thing is still new to me.” As is social interaction, but you’re not sure if that’d be appropriate to say.

“So, what you did to subdue the stalker, it was… psychic? You, what, held it in a mental headlock? That sounds a bit too unbelievable…” Her mind adds “Then again, how else could it have been? There was no sign of any toxin or trauma that could have done it…”

You believe it’s time for a bit of a demonstration. “You don’t believe me?” You project into her mind.

“What the… Your voice… That was you. You actually talked straight to my mind..." She pauses for a moment, processing everything you told her and what she just experienced. " Psychic huh? Sounds like something out of a sic fi movie…”

I was hired by him to join his expedition to protect them from wild beasts, and he arranged for me to get that second house of yours. Basically I was here picking up the key with this visit. The whole exotic hunter thing also explains why I have an ex-confederate wraith.”

“Ok, sounds fine.”

“And talking about the expedition, you said something about a reward for specimens?”

“Oh yeah, almost forgot. I’ve had a lot on my mind with the stalker itself.” She takes out a mobile device, but not the same as the one she used to scan the stalker. After some tapping she resumes. “Right, with the research grant as it is… I can get you 1k credits for that stalker.” She walks towards one of the cupboards at the wall and opens it. Inside is a safe, and after some tinkering it opens. She comes back with a credit chit, and quickly checking confirms that it’s a thousand credits on there.

“nice, thanks. You need any other specimens? I could use some sedatives to keep them under for an extended period of time, keeping them unconscious psychically is quite tiresome.”

“Erm, I don’t really need any live specimens anymore, At least not right now, I still have my hands full on this one. I could do with a body though. They never actually managed to kill one, and dissection could tell me a lot too.”

“Ok, dead stalker, check.”

“It’s getting a bit late though, I’ve gotta do another injection and I’m gonna go to bed after. I guess I’ll see you after the expedition then?”

“Goodnight then Lisa.” It’s the first time you use her first name, but it felt appropriate here. She did say you could call her that way earlier…

“Yeah, goodnight… Artemis…” She starts the sentence with a smile, but it quickly drops into a bit of a worried look.

“Oh… Artemis isn’t your real name then is it?”

“No, it isn’t. I don’t even know my real name.”

You can feel a bit of pity radiating from her, but she gives you a quick smile and bids you a proper goodnight.

Back on the street, you head to your house. You’re still drawing looks from a lot of people, so you nonchalantly call after Lisa: “Thanks for the lodgings, doctor!”

At your house, you figure you best get some sleep, you’ll have to get up early tomorrow and the trip will probably be exhausting. You strip down completely. The ghost suit was never very comfortable to sleep in it, but you were used to it. The modifications made it much worse though. You order the adjutant to set an alarm so you’ll be in time, and lie down in bed. After roughly half an hour, you’re asleep.

- … know he’s around here somewhere. I don’t care if we have to look through a dozen more systems, or even a hundred. We’ll find hi… Oh… Hello Secundus. How nice of you to call! You know, I’m in the area and I wanted to drop by, but I seem to have misplaced your address. Would you mind reminding me?” It’s almost your own voice, but the way it is said immediately paints the image of a sadistic smile. -

- “Come on seconds, just give in, it’d make things so much easier for the both of us.” -

- The moment he appeared in front of you again you started gathering energy for a counter attack, and as he finishes his sentence you launch it at him as best as you can. Before any more tendrils can latch on, before Primus can say anything else, you feel the mental projection of him shatter. The tendrils suddenly shatter too, and now the whole nothing around you is shattering, and you feel yourself being pulled back somehow. Back to your body. -

You jump up, confused and dazed, and entirely on instinct you feel yourself going into a low combat stance. It takes a while to realise you’re not fighting anymore though. 1.

Let's go expedition it up, maybe get a little more out of this place before Omega shows up and we got to run.

You've got equal amount of chance for crit success, and fails, even critfails aren't the end of the world.

>>30462545
Primus just repeatedly called you weak, and the runt of the litter and things like that, sent to "kindergarten" ghost academy while they were in "college". I think it's safe to say that he is, or at least considers himself to be, much stronger than you.

>>30462965

also probably rather pissed that we threw him out...
>>
>>30463011
Funny thing is though, you were inside his head. It's a lot harder to keep someone inside your own head while he's trying to get out, than to throw someone out who's trying to get in.

>Infect her with shadowruns: our buddies which we do not remember might know we are here. Maybe agree on some sort of signal and assume any other invisible men are hostile (for all the good it would do)

>Also who are we really? If Academy is kindergarten, who planted us there? There is some sinister age

Don't do this.

Stop blabbing secrets to people whose minds are easier to read than ours are.

In for a penny, In for a pound, as they say...

This is not exactly a 'secret' that would harm her, or us, though. What could get her in trouble she already knows.

You put on your suit and mask, disabling the alarm, and go outside. You quickly grab something to eat and go to the biodome to take a shower. You figure they probably recycle everything and that that’s why the showers and sanitary are there.

>Forgot to update credits the last two times, so here it is. -5 x2 for food, +1000 for stalker.
>You now have 1680 credits

Feeling refreshed, you head to the small open space in front of Haverdam’s house, and find it to be filled with people. Most of them seem to be generally curious or waving off a family member, but there’s about twenty men and women busy with… Large bipedal creatures with a hump on their back. You’ve never seen anything like them before, and for a moment you just stare.

“Ah, there you are, Artemis old chap. And, what do you think of the camels?”

“I uhm…”

“They’re excellent beasts of burden. They’re local, and last time we found out the plants seem to behave when they’re around. With them we can actually make camp in the jungle without being choked by a vine in the middle of the night.”

>1. They’re local? Is this another case of weird evolution or are they, you know, normal?
>2. Ask Haverdam something else (specify)
>3. Continue along and start the expedition.
>4. Write in.

This. It is time to at least train her to pass for normal. It probably wont do any good vs. our family of dicks, but eh.

cheers for the thread, OP, was fun.

Hope we won't return from expedition only to see ruins of a village

“More of those weird out-of-place beasts, are they?”

“I don’t know, not really my field of study and all of that. I expect Miss Frigners to know.” He puts his arm around you and starts pulling you back towards the caravan, which seems to be almost ready for departure. ”They’re damn handy though. Can survive in the jungle indefinitely. They get all the food and water they need from the vegetation, and can even go for days without eating.”

“So, anything besides stalkers I should watch out for?”

“Well, unless we come across a mastodont, not really, but those are exceptionally rare. For the rest it’s pretty much harmless.”

“Well, I’d still prefer to know about those mastodonts.”

“Oh ok. They’re these huge creatures, like dinosaurs, you know dinosaurs? They’re really big lizards. But the mastodont is like roughly twenty metres tall and five wide. It basically devours a bath through the jungle, eating entire trees, and trampling anything that gets underneath them. Our most powerful rifles can’t even penetrate its hide.” He looks at the rest of the camel train for a moment, then starts heading towards the front. “Well, best get this thing moving, no? I think it’s best if you stay at the rear, the Stalkers tend to prefer ambushes and cutting off our path of escape.”

With that, he leaves you, and the expedition starts moving towards the east gate.

Thanks. And who knows. You know he got something out of your head, but not exactly what. It might be your location, but it might also just be the fact that you're the BIODOOOOMMMEEE GHOOOOOOSSTTTT.
