“Then you should get your own legend for this, rather than borrow,” you respond. You’re laying down next to Umbra and Ombra, while Schatten is sitting on the opposite side of the den. The shelter smells faintly of the other wolf pack, but you haven’t heard their howling since the humans attacked.

“With the rate that you’re inhaling human hearts and taking the easy track, if I tried to keep up with you there would be only strife. You can’t have two legends together like this, one will fade to the other. You bringing Hasdrubal down on my pack only made things worse when you forced your way in.” Schatten lays down and closes his eyes for a moment. “But with the way we’re being hunted, it may be the only rational choice.”

“It’s kept us alive this far. Tell me what you know of Taurini, and why you wanted us to slay him.”

“The Serpent is a monster for the sake of fear and power. He’s survived for hundreds of years now on the tributes and sacrifices of the humans. Once he may have been weak, but time has given him strength. He lives in the mountains, a cave too high to climb to, to secluded to find save by the wailings of his prey and the dashed bones against the stones,” Schatten explains.

The shepherd Hasdrubal killed was one of the few to know this, but he paid the serpent enough tribute to not be bothered. I was living around his herd, building my own legend by killing his goats by night and letting the blood seep into the ground,”

“But the shepherd had a daughter with some female that died of sickness. Only a few years old when it happened. It was a terrible storm, and the shepherd had to tend to the flock, so he told her to stay inside and be safe. But the little girl could hear the panicked bleating of the tribute. I was planning to kill it and eat it myself, Taurini be damned. But she beat me to it, and let the creature free. Well that made Taurini angry, he’s a hungering beast that cares little for his prey,”

“When he came down, he saw the goat not as tribute but as prey he had to take for himself. So he devoured it and kept looking for the tribute. I tried,” Schatten continues. “I tried to protect her, to get her back through the storm and to her home. But she was scared, and Taurini was looking for her. The creature attacked and left me for dead so he could kill her, and took off before her father could come,”

“I was given the blame, and it ignited my legend. He would taunt me from time to time, and I swear I will kill him,” Schatten finishes.

“Do you really think that’s even possible? We’ve been lucky so far, you don’t survive with luck. Do you even have a plan?” you ask.

The black wolf stares back at you for a while before responding. “He mentioned during the riddles that Morning’s First Ray of Light could end him. If there’s any time to strike, it would be then.”

“So what? We grab on to him and keep him tied down till just before dawn and let him go? Hoping he’s stupid enough to reveal himself like that? Hoping he doesn’t simply overpower us and eat us?”

“Schatten,” Alicea interjects. “Taurini is a legend, he has rules to his existence regardless of whether he is malicious. If he needs tributes to maintain himself, he surely didn’t have much choice in the matter. Call it a tragedy and move on. What you propose is suicide for all of us.”

“You try living with the spirit of the girl you couldn’t save for a year and simply moving on,” Schatten snarls at her.

“Do you even have any way of finding him?”

“If he has woken from hibernation, then we need only follow the ash and fire. The humans who would pay him tribute clearly cannot with this army before them. It will be a simple matter,” Schatten says.

“I shall help you, because you have helped me in the past. But I cannot concede that this will be a good idea. It may be the death of both of us,” you respond.

“I’m willing to take the risk. We leave now. Every moment we waste he may be getting farther and farther from us,” Schatten says as he starts to walk from the den.

Alicea jumps off of him as he steps outside, returning to your shadow. “I cannot recommend this course of action. I cannot even believe you are siding with him. When he isn’t speaking with you, he’s hardly smarter than an average wolf, and the average wolf is stupid,” she says.

“I was an average wolf,” you growl as you start to follow behind Schatten.

“I would have never joined you if you were an average wolf still,” she says.

“Umbra, Ombra, stay here. I can summon you if need be, but I do not wish to force you into this,” you say as you leave the two of them behind. They silently glance at one another and get to their feet, but don’t follow. You may never see them again.

Outside, you find that Schatten has already taken off trotting. He presumably found Taurini’s scent, but it eludes you. His scent is easy enough to follow. You catch up with the black wolf and let him lead you back up through the forests, well away from the river and towards the mountains. Smoke and sulfur fills the night air and nearly hides the stars themselves. Blood and burnt flesh is ahead of you.

But there’s another scent in the air. Something sweet, and cold. “What are you stopping for Whitefang? There is nothing here.”

“What do you think you’re doing Whitefang?” Alicea asks as you slow your pace and raise your nose to the air. Something definitely passed through the air here not a moment ago, heading towards the villa. You can track Schatten faster than he can track Taurini as well, so you can spare time to look.

“Something passed through here, something I’ve never smelled before,” you explain before you start following the trail through the air. It dips and weaves, settling on fresh snow, or budding tree branches, but you can’t seem to catch up with it before the trail disappears. You give the area a double check, but the trail goes nowhere, and there is nothing here. Schatten might be close to Taurini by now, so you begin to return to his path.

But then something catches your eye. You snap your head around and freeze. She stands there for a moment, holding your gaze. It’s the female wolf, the one who saved your life, and had hers taken by Caecilia because you couldn't save her. She turns and takes off running, opposite of Schatten.

“That’s not possible,” Alicea whispers.

You run after her, but stay wary of your location in the woods. The female wolf runs well ahead of you, fleeing from your presence faster than she should be able to. “Whitefang stop! This isn’t safe!” Alicea protests as the female wolf disappears behind a tree. You catch up to her and peer around the edge to see that she’s gone without a trace. And the whole time, you didn’t catch her scent once.

“Ghosts shouldn’t be able to form without worshipped shrines around them. I don’t think that’s her,” she explains. You look around the woods again, trying to catch sight of her. Instead, you hear something, the churning of water. You step forward, between the trees, and up the snowy berm. You’re at the river. You should be far away from the river, practically on the other side of the mountain by now, you didn’t run this far.

“Is this Nadel’s trickery?” you ask before a shadow passes over your eyes. You can’t react fast enough, and the wolf pounces down on your neck, knocking you over and gouging into your flesh. You snarl and snap at it as you flip your legs between the two of you. As you slide down the back into the freezing water you catch him in the gut with your hind legs and toss him off.

The wolf lands with ease a few feet away from you as you twist and squirm, the bite searing your skin as if it were fire. You get to your feet, ignoring the pain, and snarl at your aggressor. He’s even larger than you are, and stronger. His fur is black as night, but ribbons of white coil around his body till they burst from his tail in a fluff of light. Blue light pours from his eyes and you can smell the sweetness and cold dripping from his body.

“It’s a fae, I should have known. Of course they’d come to save Nadel,” Alicea comments as you pace up to the other wolf. There’s something familiar about him.

You relax your fangs and tilt your head to the side, he does the same. Beneath the smell of fae is something terribly familiar. You jump back from him and see that he’s recognized you as well.
