Your heart pounds in your chest as you push yourself forward, urging yourself through a slurry of mental static. The girls’ strange, artificial musculature hisses and vents tiny pearls of steam as they hurry after you, but you’re flickering between reality and that cold place of invisibility, making it hard for them to keep up. Beyond the chattering, spider-like legs of the machine, you see, just for a moment, Kimura’s expression change, as if suddenly realizing you’re even there.

A crossbow bolt whistles past your shoulder (holy shit, she has a crossbow). You hear Joseph saying something, half a mutter and half a shout, but you tune it out. Another bolt misses you by a hairsbreadth, actually taking a small tuft of hair from your head on its way past, and you hear the dull, meaty thud of its metal tip slamming into one of the pursuing clones behind you.

You can do this.

You close the distance between you and the machine quickly, its legs skittering across the concrete in an awkward attempt to get back. The vaguely humanoid shape bound to its bulbous central mass squirms as another ripple of uneasy space erupts from the whirling capacitors atop it, but it’s not tracking you properly, the nauseous wave passing you by harmlessly.

You feel your arm lash out, the edge of your palm angled like a blade, biting straight through the flimsy gearwork of one of its legs' joints. The thing shudders, its weight suddenly hanging uneasily, and you grab at the closest intact limb, tearing at it with all your might. It comes apart almost immediately, and the thing emits a panicked shriek, your mind reverberating in tune. You hear, very vaguely, Kimura and Joseph both yelp in pain, just before you yourself become aware of the hot agony pressing down on the front of your brain.

Your vision flashes, but the pain recedes quickly.

Kimura is frantically notching another bolt, while Joseph just clutches his forehead and swears quietly. The machine, captive pilot and all, crashes down at your feet, metal limbs stretching wildly.

It’s almost all instinct.

The bolt falls into place. You hear the fatal click, and before you even realize it, you’ve thrown the tip of that horrid thing’s leg in its direction. Kimura dives aside, but that gives you the time you need.

You bound over the twitching wreck of the machine, racing straight for Joseph. He's soft, and he needs a cane, and you might even be able to use him somehow. A bargaining chip of some kind, maybe.

Immediately, however, the clone beside him – Zero-Whatever – moves to intercept, dull, empty eyes staring into yours. She slices at you, the humming claws embedded into her fingertips shredding the shoulder of your jacket. You grab her arm as it sails past, very much intent on dashing her aside, but her suit hisses, silicon muscles shifting across its surface, and you find your attempts met by an unexpected reservoir of strength.

A sharp twang bites through the air and your leg screams at you, a crossbow bolt slicing across the back of your calf and forcing you to one knee. Jesus, Jesus Christ, it’s like fire…

Your brain frenzies and you know you have a second, maybe less, to try something.

Her voice grinds against your ears. God, she makes you sick, that stare of hers, the way she forms her words. As the shock of all that spontaneous violence fades, you feel more closely the heavy, slurred weight of the breath rattling up through your lungs. You strength stays with you, but you can feel the blood pumping from your leg now, its dreadful, coppery warmth edging through the diminishing heat of the adrenaline.

You’re tired. You’re hurt. Your eyes still sting and your leg burns like something otherworldly. The claw-marks in your shoulder seem to chew deeper every time you move. You don’t have much more of this left in you.

So you don’t waste breath on words. You edge cautiously toward the warm glow of the furnace and the room Kimura emerged from. You need some space, some distance between you and these people.

“…You know, she really doesn’t.” Joseph murmurs it, his voice quiet, warbling with the pain his wrist. “If the feeling takes her, she’ll shoot straight through me.”

Behind the sights of her bow, Kimura chortles quietly. “You know it.”

You edge you way back, out of the room, and feel something fleshy and soft squirm lifelessly under your feet. It’s a toe. Toes, actually, several of them. Bloody and raw, and recently severed.

Several things happen at once.

You hear the door slam open, and are somewhat aware of Kimura whipping about, but you’re more concerned with the clone bearing down on you, empty eyes locked on to yours. The machine drags itself up, awkwardly fondling at the floor with its remaining arms, and vents a plume of careening, twisting space.

An inch of your wits remain, wheeling in the dead space at the fringe of your mind, and you use it to shield yourself, thrusting Joseph’s sickly frame up in front of you.

Your eyes sear with new pains as a brilliant, flashing arc of lightning rips through the building, licking across Kimura and the clones beside her, stretching out like some furious, darting creature. Something shudders through your arms and you realize that the clone, the Seven, she’s stabbed Joseph with something, something that went right through his ribcage, right into him, into his heart.

He sputters fitfully as he goes limp in your arms.

The clone sets her eyes on you, and, as if finding some strange form of agreement in you, backs off, heaving the heavy metal door shut behind her.

The only light now is the many-toothed, orangey-crimson glow of the furnace. You smell burnt flesh and ages of blood. The scientist, the one in your arms, slowly stops breathing, his perforated heart winding down. Outside, on the other side of the door, you hear screams of rage and another great crack of static, and the sound of glass breaking.

And you can only stand there, nonplussed, exactly what just happened escaping you entirely.

Christ, what is that…?

Breathing raggedly, you set the rapidly cooling remains of your father’s biggest fan down, checking his neck for a pulse. You don’t know why you bothered, really – what would you even do if he was still kicking? Slit his throat? Snap his neck? Now that he’s here, defenceless and surprisingly light, his bones full of tiny, barely-perceptible weakness and his legs weighted awkwardly, that seems a little dark for you.

Either way, he’s not breathing. His eyes, ringed by heavy, dark bangs, sink lifelessly in their sockets. A huge, empty syringe protrudes from his chest, catching the fierce light of the furnace. Looks like one of the ones he was about to stick in you. Was he really so desperate to get another sample that he’d risk his life so flagrantly for one?

Kinda ballsy, in a way. A way that you – and no other sane creature, you imagine – will likely never understand.

Something slams hard against the door, eliciting a quiver from your chest. You drag yourself up, sliding your injured leg across the floor, and make your way around the furnace, toward that god-awful smell.

Everything hisses here. Maybe it’s some old industrial complex, left to rot with the rest of some forgotten neighbourhood. Maybe it’s some absent millionaire’s untended boiler room. You’re honestly not sure. Your eyes are tired and the dark is deeper than usual, resisting all but the most stringent attempts by you to bring it into definition.

As you come around to the open mouth of the furnace, you pick out a shape slumped across a chair beside it, humanoid, small. In a moment of sudden, squinting realization, you understand that it’s Laura, her arms tied and her eyes and mouth covered by reams of duct tape. Her jacket lies slumped beside her and her gothy whatever it is she wears is soaked in blood.

And her feet have been left in the furnace.

It's much more efficient to use underworld contacts to get mustard gas and throw that at her.
There's like nothing they can do for her after that, seeing that surgery is impossible and her lungs are filled with foam.

Not bonus, but straight up ability.
At level 2 we can walk on rope, level 3 we run on rope.
Plus it should give some heft bonuses on stuff that require us to roll for reflexes.
