Staggering up, you fold a steadying arm around Laura, and edge the door open, trying to keep your back away from both the steadily rising Joseph and whatever awaits you outside.

Your eyes take a second to adjust to the light, but you soon find your heart sinking at the sight of Kimura still standing, her hair streaked with sweat and eyes widened by an indiscriminate sort of hate. The hellish machine seems to have had another few legs ripped from it, crumpled awkwardly in one corner, its captive pilot shuddering intermittently.

One of the clones is slumped across an upturned table, smoke coiling from its twitching limbs, while the other stands beside Kimura, frozen in the posture of a cat about to pounce. On the other end of the room, a short, black-clad – you think he’s wearing jeans and a hoodie, along with a scarf around his face (and… skiing goggles?) – figure is perched on one of the few stables still standing and in once piece.

None of them are moving, and you soon realize why:

Beside the door, now flung upon and revealing a dim, snow-swept night, the final clone holds the Noriko by that unmistakeable neon hair, a set of humming claws tickling at her throat. Her breath heaves her chest, agitated streaks of electricity scratching along her arms.

All eyes turn on you.
