You are Flying officer Julian Reber of the Royal Air Force. You joined the RAF to fight the BETA, monstrous aliens who dominate much of Europe and Asia. However, you're now fighting against a group of terrorist nutjobs who believe the BETA are heralds of God's wrath. The terrorists have assaulted RAF Cranwell and the adjacent military college. They have sabotaged the TSFs, but the RAF was able to maintain control of the hangars despite enemy attacks.

In order to assist the defence, you have chosen to go to the college's aviation museum and take one of its planes for a ride. The planes are used for training and air shows, so there are fuel tanks and munitions nearby. Ideally, it would be best if you were able to disperse the terrorists before they can get TSFs up in the air, but you're confident in your dogfighting abilities if things go sideways.

The question is, how will you get to the museum?

>Take a truck. You're more likely to get spotted, but speed is of the essence.
>Go there on foot. It's stealthier and you don't want to risk getting caught in a fight.

Hopefully they can't take down a truck fast enough.
>>

You can't risk letting the terrorists get access to a TSF. You need to get up in the air as fast as you can, no matter what it takes.

"Elaine, find us a truck," you tell your element lead. "I'll grab some radios and guns."

"Got it."

As Elaine goes looking for a vehicle, you grab some sidearms to complement your assault rifles, as well as a pair of radios. You don't want to lose contact with the rest of the RAF. Elaine quickly comes back with a truck and switches over to the passenger seat.

"Take the wheel," she says. "You know the way around better than I do."

You hand her a gun and a radio and get in the truck. It's been a really, really long time since you've driven a car or a truck and it actually takes some getting used to, but you quickly hit the road and head to the museum.

"Julian... are you sure you can drive," Elaine asks.

The way you ride over everything that gets in your way and cut over the grass does not exactly inspire confidence.

"It's fine." You swerve and barely manage to miss a tree. "I'm just taking shortcuts to avoid getting caught."

"I'll take your word for it."

You don't think Elaine really believes you, even though you are being quite honest.

Between your mad driving and your shortcuts, you reach the museum in record time. You managed to avoid a fight on your way there and as you predicted, there aren't any terrorist patrols in the area. Elaine stumbles out of the car while you force your grab a crowbar from the back of the truck and force your way into the museum. You know how to get to the fuel and live ammo, but you need to decide which of the ladies you're going to take out to the dance.

It'd be a waste to have Elaine just sit back and watch and you're not sure she could handle the manoeuvres you'd need to pull off to get the most out of a rear turret, especially against ground targets. That leaves the Havoc.

The college doesn't keep a full inventory of ammo, but you should be able to scrounge up 1,600 lbs of bombs for the internal bays and plenty of 20mm bullets for the four cannons in the nose. Against human targets, that'll be more than enough. You push the door control to open the hangar and run towards the maintenance depot, grabbing Elaine's hand on your way.

"I've got a plane, but we need to get it ready for launch," you say. "It shouldn't take long if we work together."

"This is the stupidest fucking..." Elaine mutters under her breath. You suspect she's deliberately being loud enough so that you can hear her. "Fine. Just tell me what you need."

"You take care of the fuel truck. I'll grab the ammo."

The maintenance depot is close by, but you're running so fast that you're out of breath by the time you get there. You very, very carefully load four bombs onto the back of a supply truck along with several crates of 20mm ammo. Elaine goes off ahead of you in a fuel truck while you follow with all the things that go boom. You're much more careful about your driving this time around.

Refuelling the plane is easy enough; while the planes are old, the maintenance equipment is much more modern and the fuel pumps itself into the plane's tank without you having to do anything. The bombs require the most effort, but it's not your first time arming a plane. Even with only the two of you, you manage to get it done quickly.

"Okay... so how do these things work," Elaine asks.

"You'll get in the nose," you say. "You'll be able to operate the 20mm cannons. Just shoot when you see a target. You'll also need to drop the bombs, but I'll tell you when to pull the trigger on those. Just keep your radio on so I don't have to shout over the engines."

"And you're sure you can fly one of these?"

"Yeah, that's easy." You climb into the plane and help Elaine get into the nose's gunner position. "I just wish we had proper flight jackets instead of our service dress."

Elaine straps in and you switch the engines on. Prop planes aren't nearly as fast as a TSF's jet engines, but the college had the runway built for these old planes and getting airborne is no problem.

Now you just need to deal with the terrorists. The college's TSF hangar is the closest one, so it'll be your first target. You just need to decide how you're going to deal with it.

>Use the guns. You just need to disperse the terrorists and break their siege.

"Elaine, we're going to use the guns first," you say. "I'm going to dive at the terrorists surrounding the college hanger first. Just pull the trigger when you see them. We don't need to kill them all, so don't be too bothered with accuracy. Just force them to get the bloody hell out of there."

"That's fine with me," Elaine says.

You don't have a lot of distance to travel and you most certainly don't have much time, but you do need to get some altitude to get a good dive going. You climb up to 10,000 feet and turn towards the college hangar. That should be more than enough for a pass, and at this altitude, gravity will be on your side. Your bullets will keep going down until they hit the ground, but unless you drop low enough to scrape the asphalt, the terrorists won't be able to shoot at you.

It only takes you a few minutes to get to the hangar, and that's mostly because you have to make a few turns to get a good angle for your attack. At this distance, you can see the hangar, but you don't have a visual on the hostiles. However, you do see a line of vehicles and containers that have been clustered together to provide cover. You have your target.

"Elaine, I'm diving now. Get ready!"

The dive is steep, but Elaine has a good angle on the terrorists. She opens fire with the Havoc's four 20mm guns and rip through their cover and their line. It's not enough to kill them all; you can barely make out a few people running away from the hangar as fast as their legs can carry them. Still, that should be more than enough to give the RAF forces in the hangar some breathing room, if you want to move on to the airbase's main hangar.

You've done what you could here. The stragglers have scattered and while you could probably hunt them all down and exterminate them, that's not exactly a job for a Havoc. The soldiers can handle this. In any case, there shouldn't be any more risk of the terrorists getting their hands on a TSF.

You ascend back to 10,000 feet and turn towards the airbase's hangar. Once again, you can see the building from your altitude, along with what looks like several clusters of improvised cover, but you can't see the fight that's taking place. What you do know for certain is that the hangar is still sealed shut. The terrorists haven't gotten their hands on a TSF yet.

Which gives you a very significant advantage.

This time, you decide to make a point. Guns are good enough to scatter these terrorists, but even trained soldiers have a hard time dealing with having a bomb dropped on their heads.

"Elaine, we're going to bomb them," you say. "Have you got to lever."

"Everything's fine down here," she says. "Just say when."

Calculating the speed and trajectory of an object in free fall in your head isn't exactly a simple task, especially when you don't have a good visual on your target, but this isn't the first time you've done this.

You start the dive steep, but then you level out once you're a fair distance away from the terrorists and their improvised cover. You slow the engines down to give Elaine a chance and wait for the perfect moment. It looks like the terrorists have seen you, but at this distance, they can't do anything. By the time you get closer, it'll already be too late for them.

"Drop the bomb!"

Elaine pulls the release and your payload drops towards its target as you pull your Havoc up. It takes a few seconds for the terrorists to fully understand what is about to happen to them. They scatter, but their one second of hesitation proves fatal. The overpressure of a 400 pound bomb shatters their bodies and sends them flying. A few might have survived, but they won't be in a position to do anything else.

"Nice job, Elaine," you say. "Looks like the RAF hangar is clear."

"Thanks," she says. "I miss having a TSF's targeting suite, but this isn't so bad."

You pull out your radio to give Pentecost the good news.

"Air commodore Pentecost, this is Flying officer Reber. Hostiles have been neutralized. The college and RAF hangars are secure for the moment."

It takes a moment for Pentecost to answer.

"Good." You can hear the sound of gunfire around him. "We think the terrorists have bunkered down in the air control tower. We're about to assault the building."

"Yes, sir." You turn down to Elaine, still sitting in the gunner's seat. "Elaine, we're going to do a bombing run on the air tower once Pentecost's team has pulled out to a safe distance. I'll give you the signal."

"Understood."

You circle around the air tower for five minutes until Pentecost clears your bombing run. Either the terrorists can't see you at your current altitude, or they don't have anything that can hit you. In either case, they haven't tried to exit the air control tower either. Pentecost probably has sniper teams covering the exits, but it would at least give the terrorists a chance to surrender.

You pull away from the tower to get ready for your pass.

"Elaine, we're going in. Get ready to drop the next bomb."

"Release the bomb!"

Elaine releases your payload and once again, it flies towards its target. The difference is that this time, it's not an explosion so much as a perfectly controlled demolition implosion. The building collapses on itself, but not so catastrophically that it can't be survived. The terrorists who were inside the tower at the time of the explosion are going to have a really bad week, but MI5 should be able to interrogate them and see what they know.

"Elaine, that was the best bombing run I've ever seen."

"All thanks to your advice, I'm sure," Elaine says. "Can you get me out of this thing now."

You turn the Havoc back to the museum and line up with the runaway. It's not your first time landing a plane without proper instruments, air control or any directions at all either. Pentecost made sure his favourite students were all properly trained to handle whatever shit was flung at them.

You settle the Havoc down just outside the hangar and help Elaine out. She's unsteady on her feet at first, but she quickly gets back on her feet.

"That was... something," she says. "I wouldn't mind doing it again, just not under these circumstances."

"That was just an average flight," you say. "It would've been better if I'd gotten an excuse to fly inverted."

Fortunately, the truck is still in working order, so you just drive back to the shelter. The guards wave you through as you approach and you park the truck out somewhere out of the way.

"That... yeah, I'm actually surprised he didn't have a breakdown. Anyway, let's get this over with."

Navigating the shelter is strangely difficult. The wounded are being taken care of elsewhere and there aren't many military personnel who spend terrorist attacks hidden safe and sound in a shelter, but the RAF was using the place for storage space and the clutter adds up. You find John and Miriam sitting on food crates in some closet.

"Your grace, this is what troubles me every waking moment of every day," Miriam says. "Surely, you must see how my eldest daughter's behaviour is a threat to the continued lineage of our family, and she clearly has no interest in taking on her father's responsibilities. It would be better for all involved if my second daughter were to inherit the title..."

"Madam, while I understand your concerns, many members of the nobility have joined the military in some capacity, myself included," the Earl Marshal says. "Service to Crown and Country is a matter of great pride for us. I do not believe your daughter's actions - her highly commendable actions, I might add - would somehow bring harm to your family."

Miriam looks ready to keep arguing, but Elaine decides to interrupt her. The Earl Marshal seems quite grateful for the reprieve.

"And what of it? Or are you looking down on me for marrying into the nobility?"

"No, mother," Elaine says. "I am not looking down on you for doing what you thought was right at the time. I am simply doing what I consider to be the right thing. Namely, fighting for the survival of the human race."

"Yes, yes, yes." Miriam waves you off dismissively. "Always going on and on about the war. And what will we do after the war, I wonder? Who will be in charge of things then?"

Your response is immediate.

"Whoever has the best TSFs," you say. "Which puts the European Union in a very disadvantageous position, if rumours about the F-22 Raptor are true."

"Doomsaying aside, I'm glad to see you are still well, mother," Elaine says. "Please do not bother staying touch. I will be quite occupied for the next few years."

Elaine leaves before Miriam can start another argument and you follow after. It's time to see how Michel and his guests are doing.

You stumble upon Michel near a pantry, but his guests are no where to be seen.

"Have you lost your company?" You raise an eyebrow at him.

"Lost the gamble, rather," he says. "We were using a game of cards to decide who would go raiding for food. I'm afraid I lost quite badly."

"And I'm afraid you won't find much here in terms of food," Elaine says.

"Probably not," Michel says. "But it is somewhat thrilling to play the spy, even for something as petty as this."

You squeeze into the pantry to help Michel look for food. You're told that canned synthetic food is much, much worse than either normal synthetic food or canned real food, and while you are somewhat curious about the taste, you don't want to use very important state officials and bankers as your test subjects. There should be some decent biscuits somewhere around here.

"So... what are you going to tell my parents?"

"Oh, I'll obviously tell them all about your sex life and your plans to raise a family," Michel says. "You were so obvious about it that it's just a matter of time before they find out. It might as well be from me."

Elaine is trying to make herself very small and inconspicuous. It's not working very well for her.

>"Oh, good. I'm not sure if I'll have time to get in touch with them any time soon."
>"You will tell them the part where I was trying to help my element lead spite her mother, yes?"
>"Unfortunately, I'll have to put those plans on hold until I talk to my other two prospective girlfriends. Someone will have to repopulate the human race, and seeing as how women outnumber men by a fairly wide margin..."

"You will tell them the part where I was trying to help my element lead spite her mother, yes?"

"Maybe, if they ask," Michel says. "After all, that would be far less embarrassing for you."

You finally find a box of biscuits that look like they might possibly be edible cold to someone of undiscerning taste and toss it to Michel.

"Unfortunately, I'll have to put those plans on hold until I talk to my other two prospective girlfriends. Someone will have to repopulate the human race, and seeing as how women outnumber men by a fairly wide margin..."

Michel nods slowly.

"Part of me wonders if you are being serious or not," he says. "And another part wonders which possibility is preferable. Ambition is well and good, but the circumstances... Well, there are some things which this war should not be allowed to taint."

"I know what you mean," you say. "But in these dark times, one should not turn away from hope, wherever it might be found."

"Quite so." Michel politely takes his leave and goes back to his guests, carrying his loot of biscuits.

>Grab another box of biscuits for yourself and Elaine.

Biscuits of questionable taste and origin might be good enough for a Swiss politician and the world's most important bankers, but it sure as hell isn't good enough for a pair of TSF pilots.

"Time for some breaking and entering," you say. "The base mess must have some better food than this."

"It's not dinner at an upscale restaurant, but I'll take it," Elaine says.

You inconspicuously grab a crowbar on your way out of the shelter and go looking for the nearest mess. Despite the state of high alert, there aren't any guards. You don't even need to use your crowbar to get into the kitchen. Food isn't exactly high on the RAF's security priorities.

You very quickly realize something is wrong. For one thing, the food is refrigerated instead of frozen solid. For another the food is real.

"Elaine, I think we just broke into the flag officers' private mess."

There is a short pause.

"This may be the best day of my life," Elaine says.

"Damn right."

You light up the grill and take out two steak filets. You set them on the grill and watch them very carefully to keep them medium. While the steaks are cooking, you butter up a pan and start cooking some onions. Once the grill marks are properly seared into the steak, you move them to the pan and season them with salt and pepper. It's not fancy, but it's so simple that you can't fuck it up and the taste is guaranteed to be better than what you usually eat.

You serve up the steaks and quickly clean up the kitchen. Elaine is waiting for you with a bottle of wine and two full glasses.

"It looks like this is also the flag officers' wine cellar," she says.

"Oh, we're going to be in more trouble than the terrorists if they ever find out about this."

"It'll be worth it."

You pick up your glasses and toast.

"For Queen and Country," Elaine says.

"Cheers."
