"Augh, what is that smell? Did you even brush your teeth? I won't permit you to the breakfast table while I can smell your breath at ten paces."

Today is a repeat of yesterday, tomorrow will be a repeat of today. As you are lifted up by your collar and escorted to the bathroom to reattempt personal hygine, you feel like you've already done this a million times. The Servant who has you by the scruff looks down on you, pinching his nose. You wish you could punch him in his non-descript face, but the last time you did that, the Chief yelled at you for hours and hours about her sympathetic pain. After you are unceremoniously dumped into your own bathroom sink, you set about the task of cleaning your teeth. Again.

It's been some time now since the Chief moved in. You can't say you've enjoyed the company, but some small part of you has grown accustomed to the background noise that is your new roommate. You don't know if you'll ever get into this cohabitation thing, but at the very least, you won't go insane from it. As you brush your teeth, you become aware of the shower running. You turn your head to see a figure through the fogged glass. You can already tell who it is just through the process of elimination, but this vague outline takes you off guard. You never really considered her body before. You don't have much time to think about it as the door cracks open and a soapy hand reaches out from the steam.
>>

"Oh, is that you, Capta--no, darling is more appropriate now, isn't it?"

It most certainly is not.

"I seem to have forgotten the conditioner. My hair is not as luxurious as your own, but it does need to be cared for. Could you please come help me apply it?"

You frown and look around. Well, she did forget the conditioner. It's fruity, flowery smelling stuff. You never would have kept something like this in the house just a short while ago, but now you're finding yourself all too used to its scent. You reach for the bottle, but are interrupted.

"Now, darling, don't be shy. I shall be sure to give you the proper amount of skinship in return. Don't worry about the time...while I'm sure you have the stamina to last, I am confident that my technique can relieve your more masculine morning urges."

Well now you're a little annoyed. Next to the bottle of conditioner, you see the a bottle of mouthwash and have a devilish idea. You're not sure it's wise, or even decent of you to do so, but the temptation is there.

>Just give her the conditioner.
>Hand her the mouthwash instead.
>Enough of her nonsense. Force her out of here.

I would give her the conditioner, but this is Claire. She won't really be put out, and I'm curious as to how she'll rationalize it.

It should be noted that if we actually do go down that route there is no going back. It will be an endless escalation of new events to get her back to full satisfaction.

She can go lather up her own hair, but you don't see any reason why you can't just hand her the bottle. You take the bottle off the counter and bring it to Claire. Hopefully now she'll leave you be for a little bit and--

"Captain get."

Claire grabs you by the wrist and yanks you forward. You're too strong for her to really pull you all the way in, but your head and shoulders are pulled into the steamy shower. You frown and glare at Claire before realizing her state of undress. You move to cover your eyes but...wait, what? Two blinding shafts of light run across her body at chest and groin height, totally obscuring your vision of her more feminine features. More confused than aroused, you find yourself staring at the strange phenomenon. After a moment, Claire turns to cover herself with her hands.

"Please, be gentle with me in here. Everything is quite slippery."

You drop the conditioner to the floor and shut the shower door behind you.

"Come now, Captain. No need to be reserved."

You barely register her words as you head down to the kitchen table. The Chief is sitting at the head of the table, holding a newspaper in one hand and a cup of tea in the other. Dead Maid, the strange being you picked up from the prep school, leans over and fills her cup with a fresh serving of hot black tea. Dead Maid acknowledges your presence with a silent bow, then pulls your chair out for you. You take your seat without a second thought and accept a fresh cup of morning tea from the resident maid. It's refreshing and delicious but you can't help but notice the rumbling in your stomach.
>>
>>30622505
The Chief looks at you, a curious expression flashing over her face for a moment before it settles on her usual scowl.

"You'll just have to wait for Claire to make breakfast, you beast. I've nothing prepared for a dirty animal like you."

Good morning to you too, Chief. You take another cup of tea, drinking in silence for a few moments before the Chief sets her newspaper down. She looks at you intently and you can see the gears turning in her head. After finally deciding on how she wants to phrase whatever is on her mind, she speaks up.

"Wild Card, would you be available for a... personal favor once more?"

It depends. Is she going to ask you to explain more dirty topics from her comic books? The last time you did that, neither of you could look the other in the eye for a week. The Chief averts her eyes, turning red for a moment. She mumbles something before regaining her composure.

"Nothing like that. The truth is that one of our new Branch Chiefs, Chief Hawkeye, is arranging a UGN formal event and..."

What, does she want you to go spike the punch or something? Couldn't she go ask Shining Void for that?

"No, you...you..." Chief bites her lip and calms down, "No, Hawkeye has called this event as part of his rehabilitation efforts. We're not sure why, but regular, healthy interaction with other Overed and normal human beings seems to calm the Renegade."

And so? What does this have to do with you?

"Well...We need to fill out the numbers some, so he is calling people from outside his branch to make sure there's an even distribution. You know how these things are. Mixers, right? Isn't that what they're called?"

You haven't heard anybody call one of those a mixers in a long time. You've never been to one of these yourself, you've never had the interest. The prospect of having one of these with dozens of certifiably insane superhumans doesn't sound appealing to you at all.

"Please, you're the only free young man in my district."

Oh, so you get to be a man now? Not too long ago, you remember being called an animal.

"That was that, this is this! Now, will you do it? I'll make it worth your time."

Make it worth your time? Just what is she offering?

"W-well," Chief obviously wasn't expecting you to haggle with her, "I'll cover your food and drink expenses while you're there. This is going to be professionally catered, so there's normally a charge per plate but I could see to your meal at least. I'll also speak to Chairman Yugo and have your monitor turned off at certain times of the day. I...we know you haven't been...tending...to your needs."

You scratch your chin in thought.

"And I've got another special present for you if you do well. It may take some time, so it will be a surprise."

Because the majority damanded to know what she was offering before committing to an action. Knowing what we were picking doesn't change the default choices.
>>
>>30623382
...Okay, you'll go. You want to see some of these rewards up front first. You never liked attending big social events like this, so you'll need to have something to take the edge off.

"Thank you. You don't know how much this is going to help. I'll retract my observation Servants from your room for three hours every day, just before bed. I'll figure out some explanation to give to Chairman Yugo, so you can rest easy."

Wait, it was Chief that was monitoring you now? How? When?

"I can't tell you that. You know, I must keep some secrets from you, Wild Card. You still have much time left on your probation and observation period, after all, and I must make sure you are not in any danger of becoming a Germ. But now you have some of your privacy back. Don't squander it."

Claire finally comes bounding down the stairs, wearing the apron you've come to view as normal over these few months. She heads to the kitchen and begins preparing your breakfast. Your mouth is already watering just thinking about what she might prepare. You don't know how you're going to go back to eating your old slop that passed for food when Claire finally leaves. You take another drink, Maid cheerfully refilling both your cup and the Chief's before standing aside in a small corner of the kitchen.

You suppose you have some free time with this matter resolved. Dare you speak to them again, or maybe you should go find entertainment elsewhere?

So who is Hawkeye?

The Chief perks up, putting on an eager face. Great. She gets like this whenever she has an opportunity to lecture you on a topic.

"Branch Chief Flawless Hawkeye. He's an experienced Overed from Wales, with a storied combat record. He hasn't lost a single engagement to date, and is known for his genius in battle."

The Chief gets up from her spot at the table and summons one of her butlers, who presents you with a file. This must be Hawkeye's official record. You don't feel like reading it right now, but you do notice the photo. Well, crap. He's much better looking than you are.

"Hawkeye isn't just a good fighter, he's also an exemplary leader. His even-handed, yet personal approach to the Overed he watches over has had wonderful effects on reducing their delinquent activities and improving their mental health. He supposedly has a warm, gentle disposition that just makes you trust him."

The Chief clasps her hands together and looks up at the ceiling.

"I hope to be as good of a Chief as he is one day. He's my role model."

No kidding, Chief? You would never have guessed. You put the file down, intending to read it later and wait for your breakfast. After a few minutes, Claire sets a plate full of fresh waffles and sausage down on the table and takes a seat next to you. She latches onto your shoulder while you eat, making it difficult to even get the food in your mouth.

"Claire, please, stop clinging to Wild Card and let him eat."

Claire simply shakes her head and attempts to help you out by shoving bits of food in your mouth. It is less than productive. This small act of defiance is enough to sour the Chief's mood once more, and she wipes the smile off her face and goes back to bitterly drinking her tea and reading the paper.
>>
>>30624442
--
Later, in your room, you're approached by the Chief once more. She puts her hands on her hips and points at you with all the pomp and circumstance she can muster.

"So, now that you have agreed to come, you must show me your formal wear."

You motion to your school uniform, hanging neatly in your closet.

"Is this some joke? Do you take me for a fool?"

This is all you've really worn. Hell, you really only have three sets of casual clothes--forget having anything formal. The Chief huffs, a look of disgust on her face.

"Then go buy some! I will cover it, but please don't show up in that thing."

You'll get to it when you feel like it, but right now...

Either way, I always imagine him with soulless, somewhat mindbroken eyes.

On second thought, you better go get those clothes now.

"That's what I thought. Come now, there is no time to waste!"

...Wait, what?

--

The whole place reeks of money. The lights, the carpet, the clothes...everything here clearly costs more money than you've ever seen at once. You're sure the paper cup you've been drinking water out of was made out of Benjamins. You've been here for several hours now and not tried on one piece of clothing. Claire and the Chief have been wandering about, collecting garments, putting them down, then squabbling with each other about which particular item is better or worse, then repeating the whole process. Not once have you been asked your opinion on this matter.

You take another sip then put the cup down. If you drink any more, you're sure you'll have to take a leak, and you're not sure your mind is prepared for seeing how expensive their restroom is. The girls finally approach you, each one holding a different suit.

"Captain, if I may have your attention for a few short minutes, I would like to--"

"No, Claire, let me," Chief steps in front of Claire, holding up her own suit. "Wild Card, it's time for you to make a choice. Now, I know you're an unrefined fool, but surely this must be simple enough--"

Claire pushes the Chief aside with more strength than you thought she had. Without missing a beat, she picks up where the Chief left off.

"I have taken it upon myself to select something that I'm sure will fit your personal aesthetics and style. I must admit, I have quite often fantisized about you wearing such things while you were ravishing me over and over agai--"
>>
>>30624937

You interrupt the both of them, telling them to get to the point.

"Yes, Captain, of course. We would like to know which suit you would like to wear. I have taken the liberty of ensuring that the tailors know your exact measurements already, so you need only choose which appeals to you. I will let Chief go first, as is polite."

The Chief frowns at Claire, and you can see her fang begin to poke out from her lips. She turns her attention to you and raises up her own suit to display it.

"Wild Card, I have chosen something classic and elegant for you. Note the long tail, the cuffs, and the fine embroidery."

...Honestly, it's gaudy as hell. It looks like something that belongs on a 17th Century noble, putting the flashy purple color aside. The Chief seems to be completely unable to tell the difference between what looks good and what just looks good to her. There's no way you're going to wear something like that.

"Then, Captain, allow me to show you mine. I am confident I have selected something that fits your style. I want you to be comfortable. In any case, no matter what you wear, you are always handsome to me."

Claire's is much more subdued, but it looks well cut. It's a nice black color, and while the work looks classy, it's also simple enough for you to feel at ease wearing.

There's no real choice here. You're not going to wear the abomination the Chief suggested. The only question is how you're going to put this.

>Be blunt. Claire's choice is better by miles.

You sigh and get up. You walk over to the girls and snatch the suit from Claire's hand, bringing it to the counter.

"I knew it, Captain."

Claire leans over the counter next to you, staring at you with her emotionless face. She tilts her head to the side and her eyes shine with expectation.

Oh.

She expects a reward for choosing well. As you ponder whether or not you should reward her, Claire begins to inch toward you, her hand creeping across the counter towards yours.

"When it's finished, shall I help you try it on, Captain? Or help you take it off? I'm fine with just the jacket on, too. Rather, I'd like you to leave your suit on while you do it."

Claire leans in, visibly panting with excitement. You feel a little threatened by all this and begin to shrink away. Has her switch been on all morning? Was the shower too much excitement for her?

"You're ready, aren't you Captain? I'm ready. It isn't the same suit, but a rental is fine for today. I'll pay..."

"That is enough!"

You don't even have time to turn around. You feel a pair of teeth sink into your neck and you rear back. The Chief is hanging on your back, her feet dangling inches from the floor while she digs her fangs into your flesh. Panicking, you twist and turn, trying to throw her off. Claire looks at the two of you, then puts a hand up to her cheek and flushes slightly.

"Ah...Captain's pained face is also quite exquisite. Perhaps I should try some love-taps on you for a change, Captain."

She better not!

--
>>
>>30625308

You leave the shop, putting a hand to your freshly healed neck. The Chief still had some blood on her lips when she bid you farewell for the day and stomped off in a huff, leaving you alone with Claire.

"So, where shall we go, Captain? I know of a hotel around here that has hourly rates that are quite affordable...Unless you would like to try exhibition again. I have been practicing just for you."

"A splendid idea, Captain."

Really? It's not like you actually have anything planned. You just don't feel like heading home yet. Claire shakes her head and places a hand over her heart.

"I do not have very much time alone with you anymore, Captain. I am happy to receive any exclusive Captain Time I am allotted."

Whatever. You pick a direction and start walking. The maze of the downtown area keeps you from growing too bored as you comb through the streets and alleyways, Claire silently keeping step with you all the way. The sound of her shoes hitting the ground with yours forms a pleasant beat in your ears, and your nose picks up the floral scent of her hair. You'd be loathe to admit it, but it sometimes feels weird if you're forced to walk alone these days; like you're missing your shadow. Eventually, you find yourself in front of the UGN building. Well, crap, you didn't mean to come here. Still, you idly wonder if this place sees any use now, since the Chief and her Servants aren't here to staff it.

"Shining Void and Instructor Luna still use Headquarters for their office and research work, as do some of the other Overed and staff dealing with the day-to-day functions."

That makes sense. They're probably still keeping Diablos here too anyway.

"Subject 7? No, she's been moved to the new bunker and...oh."

Claire puts a hand over her mouth. Was she not supposed to tell you?

You decide to not pry and let her get away with that little information leak. Just as you turn to go back the way you came, you hear a voice call out to you.

"Oh my, if it isn't our lovebirds?"

Both you and Claire are pulled into an embrace before you even know what's going on. You look up to see the familiar face of Shining Void, dressed in her usual coat and blouse. She looks down at the both of you and gives a big smile. You attempt to wriggle free, not knowing what she's even talking about.

"Oh really? But you two are just the big thing for everybody to gossip about. I've heard that even the other Branches like to hear about how well the two of you get along. It makes me jealous..." Shining Void's smiling face suddenly turns very dark, "So very jealous. I haven't had any in five years."

You take this opportunity to break free of her hold and step back. Eager to change the subject, you ask her what she's doing here today.

"...Oh my, that's right. I'm reviewing our welfare budget today. You know, we always send some money to the family's bereaved by Overed, as well as those we've taken for training. It takes a lot of paperwork to launder all that money from the government."

"Shall I assist you with that, Shining Void?" Claire steps forward,"I am rather good at calculations, after all."

"I'd love the help. As long as it's fine with your boyfriend."

Claire gazes at you with glassy eyes. Is she spacing out from that little comment?

Void grimaces.

"You make me sick. Whatever, come in."

--

There are piles upon piles of paperwork everywhere, along with literal mountains of envelopes. Void and Claire are working at an incredible pace, scrawling on every piece of paper in sight as they go about their work. You didn't think the UGN handled this much work, especially of the mundane variety.

"Of course we do. Did you think we just showed up to kick terrorist butt every now and again? Things like this are what we do every day. You can't just ignore how the Renegade has changed daily life. Making sure that nobody notices is priority number one for us, and part of that includes writing all these checks."

You idly nod. You weren't really interested in another lesson, but at least you're sure that Claire isn't being given some roofies from hell...again. You sit down on a chair and start to nod off, letting your boredom overtake your consciousness. You begin to dream. You find yourself in your house, struggling to reach up on the kitchen counter. A childhood dream again, is it? Why do you keep having these? None of this stuff ever happened. Unable to do anything but watch, you decide to stop questioning it and just let the dream get itself over and done with.
>>
>>30626503

You reach up to the counter again. What's supposed to be up there? Was it...cookies? No matter how you stretch or jump, the goods you're reaching for are just out of reach. Damn. If only you had some help. Someone taps you on the shoulder and you turn around. Ohh, it's this person again. While you can make out every detail of her pink sundress, you just can't seem to get a good look at her face. No matter, looks like she's going to help you. You think you begin to talk something over with her, and you feel yourself bending your knee. The girl promptly hops up on your back and climbs on your shoulders. As you stand, you can see her reach over the kitchen counter and grab a fistful of cookies. She takes one and pops it into your mouth for you.

Before you can get the food down, your mother enters the kitchen. She bends over and frowns.

"What is with you two? Always getting into trouble!"

You feel yourself grin and try to take a bite of that sweet, sweet cookie. Odd...it tastes like...glue?

You wake up to find Claire using your tongue to close envelopes, you see a huge pile of closed letters next to you, each of which probably has its own welfare check inside. Realizing you're awake, she quickly closes the envelope and sets it on the stack.

"I'm sorry, Captain. My mouth was running dry. You always have so much spare saliva, I simply helped myself."

And just how does she know about how much spit you have?

"I measure the amount, viscosity, and taste on a daily basis."

That's it. You're out of here.

You get up and begin to leave, knocking over several piles of paperwork as you go. One in particular, however, catches the edge of your vision. You immediately stop and bend over, picking up the check. This is your name, isn't it? But...there's something wrong here.

"Captain? Captain, please you need to put that down. It's sensitive information."

Sensitive is right. You know what's wrong with this check. The address is right. Your name is spelled right. The amount looks like a typical check from the government. But there's one thing that keeps nagging at you. Only your name is on any of these documents.

Why isn't this paperwork addressed to your parents?

>I'm going to take that to mean you're going to give us the exact opposite of what we want/expect.
No, no. I only trick you guys when it looks like you're picking options that will cause the quest to stall out/flounder.
>>
>>30626979
I must not have communicated it clearly. I know I put off making very clear definitions for too long, so I'm sorry if I misled you somehow.

>There's no trap.

honestly though i don't really care about the relationships for captain, the story, battles and subplots is more interesting for me.
>>
>>30626996
>It is necessary to interact with a partner to improve upon or learn new Partner Skills.
>Finally, every Partner has a greater Skill that is rewarded to you for resolving their particular sub-plot.
Not sure when these were added to the setting document, but I KNOW they weren't there from the start, and you NEVER said anything even remotely like that in-thread until we did the arcade thing with Claire.
>>
>>30626962
no trap option? heresy!
i dont care either way, i just assumed that someone with your powerlevel couldnt not put a trap in somewhere
>>
>>30627042
Yeah, one of those things I should have explained fully from the beginning instead of leaving it vague. That's okay, though. Still plenty of time to max out all your links, if that's what you guys want to do.
>>
Can we at least get a reverse-trap? And no, Diablos doesn't count.
>>
>>30627088
I'll see what I can do.
>>
>>30627072
what if chief hawkeye is the trap?
>>
>>30627074
does this things work too when they are fighting w/o captain? or do they have entirely different bonuses depending who they are with?
>>
>>30627096
Exactly how well will Chief take being nicknamed "Loligoth"? Because this thread finally saw me make the connection.
>>
>>30627126
About how well do you think she'll take to it? Though, Fallen Angel really takes outlandish clothes to the hilt more often than Chief does.

>>30627119
When they're not with Captain, they work on PLOT because they're not the MC with narrative control.
>>
>>30627148
Chief however fits the expected body image better.

Wonder if we can point Fallen Angel in Chief's direction. If we do it right, Angel will keep Chief distracted and annoyed long enough for things to not happen.
>>
>>30627182
I might just try to use that.

I have no idea how to interpret this.
Is she going to show up dressing in something like pic related?
>>
>>30627213
No spoilers please.
>>
>>30627199
Fallen Angel must drive Chief crazy. Her personality is completely the opposite of Chief, and we know that Chief has a height complex, and then there's the cowtits. While their fashion senses seem similar at first glance, Angel would have added a sword and domino mask to Chief's suggested outfit, and probably smokebombs for a dynamic entry.

We have to get them interacting.

The differences between their fashion senses:

Chief actually dresses like a noblewoman.

Fallen Angel dresses like the villainess from a Saturday morning cartoon.
>>
>>30627278
Yes, exactly. Similar at first glance on a foggy night, then you get close and realize both people are weirdoes and cross the street to get away from them.

>In keeping with the original theme of Double Cross, relationships are an important part of gaining Renegade Abilities. Each Major NPC will be associated with a power Wild Card can learn. In general, strengthening a relationship leads to the formation of new Renegade Abilities, but a relationship need not be positive. As long as the relationship meaningfully progresses in some fashion, Wild Card will learn from it and grow. This also means that stagnant, yes-man relationships lead nowhere.

Quote taken from thread 5 of the first arc.

Oh good, that did happen. Couldn't remember where it was when I looked last night, thanks for finding it.
>>
So,
>>30475375
"Your parents? ...Ah, yes, don't worry. Extra welfare has been allocated to take care of all of these arrangements.[...]"

was when I seriously got the impression Cap's parent's weren't... existent, but I'm sure the idea had been floating around longer; was there any other suspicious dialogue, or just their prolonged absence?
>>
>>30629219
Maybe, my bet is they got mind wiped into not knowing Cap exists.
>>
>>30629227
Calling it now, they were killed when Claire first became an overed
>>
>>30629219
I remember Chief offering to increase his welfare payments when she asked him to join the UGN the first time. Before that, I think Captain mentioned that he never sees his parents anymore.
>>
It might be that everyone on the island has been mindwiped at one point.
>>
>>30629219
Captain mentioned that his parents were working overseas, but in his dreams, his mother is a housewife.
>>
>>30629241
Claire became an Overed when she was just a little kid. I don't think Captain's been living on his own since he was ~6.
>>
>>30629367
I wouldn't put Flashback Captain at more than six or seven. He had a hard time reaching up to a kitchen counter.
>>
I wonder if the Captain can transfer over to this new UGN division to get away from these people.
>>
>>30629367
> I don't think Captain's been living on his own since he was ~6.
In the flashbacks, Captain seemed surprised that his parents were "actually home".

The only previous mention of Cap's parents are that they work "abroad" in the first thread.
I wouldn't put it past DXR to say that they've been gone since Claire.
>>
>>30629413
>implying the new division isn't even worse
Captain is fucked either way.
>>
>>30629658
Betting the new division is actually traitors.
>>
>>30629705
i doubt it would be the entire division. Probably just one of the higher ups
>>
>>30629797
We should play spot the traitor at the mixer.
>>
>>30629797
>>30629853
Let's not play coy, here.
We all know the traitor is the division chief, either that or he gets killed by the traitor.
>>
>>30629853
bring Claire and Rin along as well. MST3K the entire party

Captain asks for some popcorn.
>>
>>30630365
>captain drops his punch and walks back home

fixed that for you
>>
>>30630292
I think that the last smidgeon of hope that Captain had for a normal life evaporates in front of his eyes. He is even more zombie-like than usual, resigned to his horrid fate of exciting things happening to him.
>>30630147
That would be amazing.
>>
>>30630147
>Well that guy is obviously the spy
>Why do you say that, sir?
>obviously because is unparalleled sense of smell and keen-
>he's wearing a trenchcoat and fedora. it's obvious
>>
Next thread, we need to get the decisions back on track. Whether the voters like the UGN crazies or not, Captain wants them out of his life.
>>
>>30631928
I'm pretty sure we've been character-developing in the opposite direction, things like 'walking without Claire feels like walking without your shadow'.
