Last time, you found a heavy black pod inside the remains of the colossal blight demon. You'd been meaning to kill that monster for a while now, but now it seems the ordeal isn't over. You drop the pod to the ground as it splits open with a wet, hollow cracking sound. An insectoid creature emerges, completely coated in black ichor, somewhat smaller than you but bigger than a human. It shakes some corruption from its compound eyes, crouches, and hisses at you.

> Welp, here goes. "Hi, my name's Hunzuu. What's yours?" Has that line ever worked?
> This monster probably has no mind other than the piece of Pazuzu inside it. "Patience, help me kill this thing."

It worked once, on the giant.
this time it totally won't work though, so while you are saying it, ready something to kill this thing with. Maybe your claws, maybe stab it with half the pod, if your claws aren't tough enough.

You keep a safe distance and try to look as non-threatening as a giant scorpion can. "Hi. My name's Hunzuu. What's yours?" You can't manage to say it with you usual veneer of girlish enthusiasm. It's more of a recitation.

The creature raises itself and spreads its dripping wings. It's like a humanoid burrowing wasp. It snarls and twitches its mandibles, then coughs up more black filth onto the ground. "Chhck... A flesh-eater. A killer who wanders from battle to battle, without remorse, barely aware. I have no use for you."

Well, at least it's replying to you rather than trying to kill you and eat your flesh. That reminds you, you could really go for some flesh right now. That giant blight demon didn't have any good meat.

Back to the matter at hand. You try to get a read on the wasp-thing. "And what is it you do?" you ask.

"I've had little chance to do much of anything, until now. I was a larva, dreaming, planning..." It turns its head and sees Patience. "What is that? Is that one important to you?"

> "That's Patience. She's my friend." Also maybe thank Patience for holding off on smashing this thing outright.

"That's Patience. She's my friend. Oh yeah, and thanks for letting us talk, Patience."

Patience shrugs modestly as she looks around for a new rock to use as a weapon. "I still think this thing needs to die. You know, if my opinion matters."

"A flesh-eater with a friend. Amusing." The wasp-monster shakes off some more filth until some patches of amber chitin become exposed. Her wings start humming as they shake themselves dry. "I wasn't going to waste any time on you, but this might be a good chance to test out my adult body." She leaps into the air - toward Patience.

You sprint toward the wasp, but not before she's landed on an unarmed Patience, grappling with her and trying to sting her. You join the struggle and seize the wasp with your claws. She turns out to be incredibly strong.

She looks back at you with her emotionless compound eyes. "Her death will grieve you, I see. Good. That will be a sight worth seeing. first kill will be an amusing one."

You c't think of a witty retort, so you sting her in the thorax. She now has some Slow Death in her.

You have a claw on the wasp's abdomen, just above the huge dripping stinger, but you feel like you can't keep a grip on it for long enough to spare Patience from it. You know you have to act fast. You slam your free claw into the wasp's side repeatedly, then tear some of her legs out of Patience's flesh, then roll backwards with the wasp in your grasp, putting some distance between her and Patience. Patience winces and tries to act tough, but your luck and the skills you learned in the underworld almost certainly saved her just now.

The wasp gives you a sharp headbutt as she tries to turn herself around, all the better to sting you. "You don't have the flesh-eater's joy in battle. That is a little amusing. I hope that your giant will mourn you just as much as you would mourn her."

Our diplomatic efforts have done fucking wonders for this city.
Mostly by just trying to be friendly and reasonable, we were able to talk down most of the opposed factions without them bursting into full civil war.

You reach for her stinger as you hold on for dear life, even holding on with your human arms. As your claw slips off of it and you try to get a better grip, however, it stings your claw right in the joint between your fixed and mobile claw. The pain is excruciating. It's almost as though the pain goes beyond the borders of your body, like the air around you hurts just as much as you do. Your claw spasms, and when you cry out the wasp cuts your cry short by elbowing you had in the gut.

> You have been poisoned with Deep Agony
> You have 1 wound. It just feels like a lot more.

You can't feel anything but throbbing pain in your claw, but you try to put it to work anyway, reaching toward her to clutch some more of her twitching legs. You can barely breathe. You feel weak. You are weak. The wasp breaks free.

You look up at her as she turns around and gets her wings buzzing again. She raises herself into the air a few feet. Maybe she wants to sting your human half because it looks more tender.

At that moment, you see that Patience has found the rock she was using against the blight demon. She charges the wasp and knocks her away with a sideways swing from the silt-covered makeshift weapon. You take the chance to get back up. Everything aches. The air aches. The human legs you don't have anymore ache.

Patience runs toward the spot where the wasp fell. "Waiting never works. Killing works. Trust me next time!"

Patience raises her boulder over her head and is about to bring it down on the wasp's head. This takes her so long to do, though, that the wasp is able to roll far out of the way before the boulder strikes the ichor-sodden earth. Fortunately, you are there to greet the wasp when she arrives. You're clumsy and wracked with pain, but you have work to do.

"Hi. My name's Hunzuu. What's yours?" You snap your claw at her face. As Patience kicks the wasp while she's down, you hold her head down for long enough to rake your claw across her eye cluster, popping some of them open in a series of small squirts of bright green vitreous humour. The wasp hisses at you. Her hiss sounds infinitely more hateful than yours.

Eyes are fun to pop, but going for her neck will end this faster. You're not even sure if your Slow Death will be enough to kill her. And you want her dead. Goodness do you want her dead. Patience does, too. She's about to drop her boulder on the wasp's abdomen to see what comes out when it's squished.

However, your pain weakens you, and the wasp breaks free. Some kind of gray-green acid sprays from her mouth, burning your flesh wherever the droplets fall. Her wings snap into action, and she flees into the air. "Ghhhgh... I cannot kill you. Not yet. Not properly..." Already she is out of reach.

The wasp hisses. It sounds more like fear than hate this time. It's a very emotive hiss. You are glad you taught this monster to fear. You hear something rip. You hold the leg in a deathgrip, curl up, and brace for impact.

Some time later, Patience shakes you awake. "Hunzuu? I think you blacked out from the pain. I doubted you, but that kind of worked! I must admit, I saw yo as child, but I suppose you have more fighting experience than I do."

You tuck the severed leg behind you into the sash that used to store the clay ball. You try walking, and you don't immediately fall on your ass - or whatever you have now in place of an ass. That's a good sign. "First the village."

Patience nods. "Sounds fair to me."

You pace yourself as you head from the river back to the village. The going is slow, because you're no longer able to skitter at your usual brisk pace. The pain starts to dull after an hour or two, but you do still have real injuries that will hurt for much longer.

Iltani is able to keep pace with you without needing to be carried. "I don't know what to do from here," she says. "I think... Pazuzu woke up in me too late. I didn't grow with him. So when he saw me, he didn't like what he saw. Maybe I can make him understand one day..."

When the village comes into view, you see a human lookout on one of the thatched roofs. He climbs down from the roof and waves. He might be yelling. You can't hear.

You tell Iltani, "There's a part of Pazuzu inside you. it wants to be with the other parts. It'll kill you to make that happen. You o't want to die, do you?"
Iltani's answer is soft, almost childish. "No..."
Patience overhears you. "There's a piece of Pazuzu inside her? Are you sure we can't kill her?"
"No, we can't kill her. Ishtar herself told me not to!" Well, that's not exactly true, but Patience doesn't need to know that.
"Hmph. Ishtar is fickle. Maybe she'll change her mind and let us kill her soon."

When you reach the village, a few young men are waiting in the town square, very on-edge. A few other faces look out from cracked doors and windows, terrified of you. The men have a pile of modest valuables arrayed on the ground for you as tribute. "We cannot fight," one of them says. "Please accept this." It's not even true valuables, just whatever the villagers had at hand - painted pottery, baskets of food, time-worn bronze tools, clay icons of the gods, three goat kids tethered to a pole.

"You don't know me? I'm Hunzuu, savior of Ligish. I'm here to protect you. That giant blight demon is dead. There's some kind of wasp-woman that we drove away. She's not good like me. If she comes back, flee to Ligish for protection."

You're not sure whether they believe you, but whether out of gratitude or fear, they remain deferential. "Of course! Please, from a grateful people."

> "Sacrifice it to Ishtar."

Maybe be a little less arrogant-sounding, but we don't really gain anything from accepting it, and they were already prepared to give this stuff to you, so it's likely they've had to deal with monsters before.

You want raw flesh, and you know those tender baby goats are made of exactly that, but you also kind of pity these people and their creepily well-defined protocols for what to do in case of monster attack. Also, the goats are cute. One of them is bleating at you. You choose not to kill and eat them. "K-keep them..." You turn and gesture for Patience and Iltani to follow you.

The young man panics at first. "Did we displease you, Lady Hunzuu?"

"No!" You have t explain. "You just need this more than I do!"

This idea takes them a moment to process. You didn't come here for tribute? Hesitantly, some women come out of the huts to gather up the items and return the kids to their mothers.

"Goodbye. Be safe." You bend all the way down to pet the goats with your human hand, so as not to spook them. "Mahhh!" they say. One of them jumps in place.

You ask the head growing out of Patience if the Charioteers will give her a place to stay.

"I... guess so? We emptied out some rooms for a monster to use. I hope we didn't destroy those rooms on our way out."

"Heh, yeah, I hope so," you say. "What's your name, anyway?"

"Enusat," says the head. "And since we have free time now, can I tell my mother what happened?" Patience agrees with a laugh.

As you wearily crawl through the gates of the pyramid, Nakurtum runs out to greet you. "Zuu!" She almost gives you the tightest hug she can, but then she sees that you're kind of busted-up. "You all right, kiddo? Iltani didn't do that do you, did she? I don't know what you see in her, but that's over the line."

"I was good!" Iltani says with a pout. "Why do I even bother being good if everyone's going to hate me anyway?! I hope Pazuzu eats all of you."

"No, she didn't do it. All of us are going to eat goat now. We need to have a talk about how Iltani is strong enough to break out of jail cells, and should probably just stay in a room."

Nakurtum eyes Iltani over suspiciously. "Tell that to everyone else. She didn't break out for months, and keeping her in there was good for morale."

Nakurtum and Iltani continue being passive-aggressive at each other while you guide them back to the kitchens and Have Nergal-Edir cook you all up some spiced goat. While you're waiting in the old feast hall, you have Nakurtum remove your armor piece by piece and inspect your back. Pulling some of the pieces of bronze off hurts a lot. Nakurtum gives a tug to pull a piece loose from the dried blue blood. "Ecch. It's not good. The good news is you're in one piece, but the one piece is kind of... in pieces. Don't worry, kid, we'll clean you up. You'll be all right. You'e gotten through worse." She tells you as though to convince herself.

"I used to like blood," Iltani says. "But blue blood isn't as nice somehow. Do you think colors themselves have meanings, or do they only mean things to us because we associate them with specific objects?"
