You are Flying officer Julian Reber of the Royal Air Force. You joined the RAF to fight against the BETA, aliens who threaten to conquer the Earth and exterminate humanity. Due to circumstances that were not entirely under your control, you also run errands for British intelligence. At the moment, you are officially at the UN's Yukon base to check up on some of the EU's engineering projects. Unofficially, you have been asked to steal highly classified military secrets from both the US and the USSR.

The sergeant who greeted you upon your arrival escorted you to your lodgings, apologizing profusely about the lack of hospitality. Japan and the UN are apparently carrying out a crucial military operation, but she doesn't know the details. In all likelihood, it's the joint attack on the Yokohama Hive, which is serving as a distraction from your covert activities.

In any case, you have just settled in and are now pondering your mission objectives. Two of these will require assistance from Soviet forces, assistance which you do not currently have access to. Until you hear from the local MI6 operative, the only thing you can do is make contact with Frank Heinemann. He was an engineer for the defunct YF-23 Black Widow and the EU wants any specs you can sweet talk out of his brain.

Time for some legwork.

You're looking for an engineer and it's still early in the morning. You decide your best bet is to check out the hangars and engineering facilities. You don't know what, if any, Heinemann's currently working on, but even if he's on his break, someone will know where to find him. Besides, this is as good a time as any to get acquainted with some new state-of-the-art TSFs.

The hangars are easy to find. Despite the operation currently going on in Japan, research and test flights must proceed on pace and TSFs are being deployed for training exercises and evaluations. You just need to head towards were the giant robots are flying from. The engineering facilities are nearby, so you can kill two birds with one stone.

The walk is a tough exercise, but it does you some good and the chill isn't as bad as you'd feared. Just beyond the next checkpoint, you see row upon row of TSFs from all over the world. You'd heard Project PROMINENCE had quite a collection, but you didn't think they would actually have the latest toys; countries tend to be very protective of their military technology. However, you notice the *really* good stuff - machines like the Raptor - aren't on display.

You walk up to the checkpoint and the MP asks to see your ID. You're fully authorized to be here, but you need to decide how you want to introduce yourself. Getting some directions to Heinemann would make your life easier, but if the MP gets suspicious...

>"I am Flying officer Julian Reber, with the RAF. I've been assigned to visit your facilities. The EU wants to know if it's worth expanding our contributions to Project PROMINENCE."
>"I am Flying officer Julian Reber, with the RAF. I have business with one of your engineers, Frank Heinemann."

"I am Flying officer Julian Reber, with the RAF. I've been assigned to visit your facilities. The EU wants to know if it's worth expanding our contributions to Project PROMINENCE."

"One moment, sir." The MP takes out a ledger and flips through the pages until he presumably finds your name. "Excellent, sir. We've been expecting you and the engineering teams have been informed of your arrival. Please feel free to look around and welcome to Yukon base."

"Thank you."

MPs are so much more pleasant to deal with when they're not breaking up fights.

As you enter the airfield, two more TSFs launch out of their hangars. These look like F-15s, but with extra engines. They're probably the Active Eagles you've heard about. They're still in early development, but they apparently have functioning prototypes ready. They might make a decent substitute, if you can't get anything on the Black Widow. In the meantime, you could drop by their observation room in case Heinemann's there.

You also pass by a few mechanics and ask for directions to the Boening offices. They're apparently located in the back of the airfield. Heinemann's office will definitely be there. Even if he isn't, you can just wait for him.

>>Check out the Active Eagle's observation room.

isn't the F-15 one of the most common TSFs? Upgrade package for such a thing... oh baby those torqued bolts
>>
>>30740714
You decide to drop by the Active Eagle's observation room. At the very least, you'll get to see a new TSF in action. It might be a little odd for a European to check out a mostly America TSF, but these exercises aren't classified and even if they were, you're a TSF pilot. You should have more than enough clearance.

Unfamiliar as you are with Yukon base, it takes you a while to find your way around, but there are convenient floor maps in case an evacuation is needed and you can more or less figure out where you're going. You find the observation room in a detached building just behind the hangar and quietly slip in, hoping it's the right room.

You see the two Active Eagles on a large screen in front of the room. Smaller screens at the front of the room show the view from each TSF's external and internal cameras. It looks like they're still running through standard flight and manoeuvring exercises.

A few people turn to face you as you enter, but they don't get in your way. If anything, they practically start drooling when they get a good look at your uniform and notice it's RAF. No doubt they can taste the delicious EU contract you might send their way.

More importantly, you see Frank Heinemann on the other side of the room. You've finally found your target. It's time to pick an approach.

>"The Active Eagle looks very impressive. I think it might give the Takemikazuchi a run for its money."
>"The Active Eagle looks decent, but 'decent' isn't going to win this war."
>"You must be Frank Heinemann. Julian Reber, RAF. I'm a fan of your work."

Looks like a slow night. I'll probably call it early.

In any case, moving on for now...
>>
>>30741181
You casually move closer to Heinemann and lean against the handrail right next to him.

"The Active Eagle looks decent, but 'decent' isn't going to win this war."

"Oh?" Heinemann turns to you and raises an eyebrow. "And why might that be?"

"The speed and agility are both impressive, but that's not our main concern right now," you say. "Our big problem is uptime. For something like, say, a Hive infiltration, we need TSFs that can fight for an extended period of time without needing to resupply."

"The Active Eagle has an expanded fuel capacity and efficiency compared to the standard F-15." Heinemann points to the fuel gauge on display. "According to our current estimates, it'll increase uptime by 15%."

"I suppose that's fair." You pause for a moment. "But even so, you're still stuck with the basic frame of an Eagle. No matter what improvements you come up with, there's only so much you can do..."

"And how would you know, Flying officer..."

"Julian Reber," you say, extending your hand. "The RAF asked me to review Project PROMINENCE's current projects. Rumour has it the EU is going to expand its military budget and Eurofightas only has so much manpower to throw around."

"Frank Heinemann." The man shakes your hand. "I'm one of the Boening engineers, currently attached to the Active Eagle project. Unfortunately, that leaves me little time to consult for the EU, but as it happens, my lunch break is in half an hour, if you'd like to discuss things further."

>"I'm afraid it would have to be a working lunch. My schedule is quite busy."
>"I have the time to spare. Does the base have a decent mess?"
>"I have the time to spare and I haven't seen the sights yet. Are there any good restaurants in town?"

You're around until MI6's agent says it's time to meet the Russians, and you have no timetable for that beyond 'soonish.'
>>
>>30741808
"I'm afraid it would have to be a working lunch. My schedule is quite busy."

"Don't I know it." Heinemann laughs in a manner which you can only describe as creepy. "In any case, we can meet in my office. There's synthetic coffee and pastries around here somewhere. We engineers usually don't have time to go out much."

"I look forward to it."

You stay quiet and watch the rest of the exercises. The Active Eagle has impressive speed and agility, but it sacrifices weapons for its new sensors. Fuel might not be a problem, but ammo certainly is. It wouldn't be so bad if it had better melee weapons, but the Active Eagle is primarily an American TSF and really, what do Americans know about anti-BETA tactics?

When the exercise ends, Heinemann beckons for you to follow up to his office.

"I'll have an assistant bring us lunch," he says.

You enter his office and it is surprisingly orderly. Mary has excellent discipline when it comes to keeping her house in order, but from what you know, that's the exception. Engineers do keep very careful track of their designs, but inspiration strikes at odd moments and files and folders aren't always available. It wouldn't be unusual for blueprints to be strewn all over this place.

Heinemann offers you a seat and one of his assistant comes by with coffee and biscuits. She shuts the door on her way out.

"So what did you think of the Active Eagle?"

>"It's an excellent TSF. I can't help but wonder what the exports will be like."
>"I still think it's a decent TSF, but it still needs improvements. At the very least, it needs better melee capabilities."
>"I still think the F-15's frame is a dead end. Boening should develop something more modern."

"As I said, it's a decent TSF, but ammunition will most certainly be a problem. At the very least, it needs better melee weapons. Then there are the issues with the frame. The Eagle is starting to show its age, and there's only so far upgrades can push it."

Heinemann leans back and rubs his chin thoughtfully.

"Yes, melee weapons are one of the issues with American TSFs. Even exported TSFs often have to be modified slightly to accept better melee weapons."

"American military doctrine has lagged behind the rest of the world," you say. "The fact of the matter is, America has no experience fighting BETA. Engineering and manufacturing capacity has given you an edge in TSF development, but it's only a matter of time before your TSFs become obsolete. If the EU's third generation TSFs continue to perform well, Boening might start losing contracts, and then America will start to lose its political leverage. It'll be bad for everyone involved."

"I suppose so..." Heinemann gives a brief glance to his filing cabinet. "But not all American engineering follows the same design philosophy, you know."

"You mean the Black Widow?"

Heinemann narrows his eyes at you.

"Oh, is that why you're here? Well, why did you just say so?"

He gets up from his desk and goes over to his filing cabinets.

"It seemed rude as an opener," you say. "Also, I really wanted to see the Active Eagle."

"Oh, I can understand that. Pilots should be more up to date with TSF engineering. If they're going to bet their lives on a TSF, they should at least understand how a TSF works, shouldn't they?" He rummages through his files a moment longer and finally retrieves a stack of papers. "Here's everything. The full schematics are classified, so I don't have them, but I do have copies of most of the most important individual components."

He lays the blueprints out in front of you. There are a lot of missing parts, but it's mostly for the pieces every single TSF built in the last ten years or so already has.

"Are you looking for anything in particular?"

>"... why are you just giving me this?"
>"That looks like everything. Would you mind if I draw some copies?"
>"That looks like everything. I just need a minute to memorize the important parts."

>>30743492
"I have to ask, why are you just giving me these?"

"Isn't it obvious? So someone can get some use out of them." Heinemann shakes his head. "I never had time for a family and... well, that doesn't matter. What matters is that my TSFs are the closest I will ever come to having children. As a father, all I want is for my children to spread over the world. If America doesn't want the Black Widow and the EU does, well, the EU should just have it, and all the TSFs that are built using the Black Widow's schematics will become my children and grandchildren."

You slowly nod your head.

"I can understand that. It's the kind of legacy few people can hope to claim." You take a notebook out of your shirt's inside pocket. "Would you mind if I drew some copies?"

"No, not at all," Heinemann says. "Take as long as you need, but do be careful with them. You don't want to get caught with American military secrets."

You draw copies of the schematics with utmost precision. You check and recheck your work several times, but you don't notice any errors. Even though your notebook is much smaller than the blueprints, any decent engineer should be able to build the YF-23's main components from your notes. You even have the good sense to spread your drawings out over several random pages and throw in other random scribbles and notes. It'll be trivial to put the drawings back in order later on and in the meantime, no one will ever suspect you've copied classified military data.

"That will be all, Mister Heinemann." You stand up and shake the man's hand one more time. "You've been very helpful."

"Oh, I assure you, you've been much more helpful to me. Good luck with this war, Flying officer Reber. I believe we will all benefit from your efforts in the end."

"Likewise."

You part ways with Heinemann, one of your secondary objectives accomplished.

>>
>>30744272
You decide to see what the rest of Yukon base is like. There's nothing else for you to do there but wait for further instructions, but there is a major military operation aimed at the Yokohama that either has started already or will be starting soon. At the very least, you'd like to know how it's going.

The base is oddly quiet. You're used to people moving around, but you hardly cross anyone in the corridors. It seems the Hive infiltration has begun and most of the staff are monitoring it.

You eventually make your way to a mess, one of the few places that has some activity going on. A few dozen people are gathered around a very small television that's only displaying static.

"Goddamn it," one of them says, "Why the fuck are we being left out of this? They could at least let us watch the attack."

"Let me take a look at that."

One of the soldiers - a TSF pilot, according to his wings - absentmindedly waves you over.

"Knock yourself out," he says.

You step behind the television and look at the cable. It's a standard television with a standard cable connection, but this is a military base. CCTV and other monitor display cables should run through most of the base and they should be colour-coded in case one of them needs maintenance. You just need to figure out which cables to cross.

"Yeah, this should be easy. I'm going to need rubber gloves, a knife and some duct tape."

You get the duct tape first - someone always has duct tape around - and then the gloves and knife. You use the knife to screw the cable connection's plastic cover and look at the wires running through the wall...

>>
>>30745248
It takes a little fiddling, but you manage to expose and cross the right wires to get an image of the battle to the television. You don't get an audio feed - there probably isn't one in the first place - but you don't damage the wiring too badly and you probably don't disrupt the signal to the monitor. Odds are, no one will notice. Unless they walk by and see the television, but you'll deal with that if there's a problem.

"That did it," one of the soldier says. "It's not much, but we'll take it."

You move back in front of the television to look at the battle. It seems you plugged into a strategic data uplink; a quarter of the screen is taken up by an image of the shore from what's probably a ship's camera, but most of the screen is taken up by personnel and materiel data. There aren't any casualties, but the artillery counters are going down fast.

"They're still in the bombardment phase," you say. "Looking at the numbers, they must have been going at it for a while. They're probably expecting a resupply."

"They better be," another TSF pilot says. "There's no way they can take the Hive with these numbers."

"They're not going to rush the thing." A woman behind you speaks up. "Rumour has it they plan on sieging it for days, maybe even weeks."

You put your hands in your pockets so no one notices your fists clench. You were there, just a few months ago. You were there and you came back out successful. The target was smaller and easier, but that doesn't change the fact that you won.

But nobody knows that.

You still don't know why that Hive infiltration was kept secret from the whole world, but the Yokohama Hive infiltration must hold the answer. For better or worse, whatever happens in Japan will reveal the truth behind the cover-up the EU imposed on you.

If you survive the rest of your mission.
