The year is 1938. The Great War has long past and now is the time for innovation, exploration and adventure.

Throughout the world, airships are now common sights, airplanes have become the flying car, and high speed trains rule the transportation industry. Men and women of derring-do travel the world in search of ancient artifacts and long-thought extinct animals. Technology becomes almost indistinguishable from the magic that exists in the world.

But not all is right. In the ruins of post-war Germany, a new power rises led under the banner of Adolf Hitler, threatening to destroy the balance of the world. To the far east, Imperial Japan expands and slaughters its way through China. Air pirates dominate the skies and prey upon the lifeblood which now flows through the air. The occult and the mysterious strike terror and fear into the hearts of many.

That’s where you come in.

The Magical Girls come from a mysterious background, nobody knows where they come from or who they are. All that’s known is that they are powerful beings brimming with magic.

You are Magical Girl Liberty, fifteen year old Christine “Chris” Hunter.

The World of Tomorrow needs a new kind of hero.

>> SEPTEMBER 22 <<
>> SOMEWHERE OVER SICILY <<

You rouse yourself, waking at the sight of your mother working hard at her desk, trying to decipher something in the Shepherd’s Journal. You must have fallen asleep watching her work last night, and she’s still working. She focuses intensely on each and every little word and letter, trying hard to figure out what they all mean by means of her own willpower. That was Mom for you.

You say, “Morning, Mom.”

Mom says, “Morning. You need something?”

You shrug. “I’m just saying good morning.”

“Alright,” says Mom, her attention still squarely on the Journal. “Listen, we’re going to be landing soon near an old estate. I have to pay a visit to a friend of mine.”

You ask, “Who?” You say, “He ain’t going to betray at the last second is he?” Mom glares at you then, her tired bloodshot eyes fixated on drilling a hole through your head. You hold your hands up defensively. “Too soon, I got it.”

Mom nods. “Right. Whatever.”

You sigh. What should you do now?

You stand up from your chair and say, “Well Mom. I’ll leave you to it. Don’t strain yourself alright?”

“I should be saying that to you, kid,” says Mom. “And remember, when we go down there, you do what I say, alright?”

You nod. “Alright.”

You head out of Mom’s room and head down the hallway. You can hear theechoing of banging wrenches and hammers, probably Rana and Jeanine working on the tank. Jeanine was quite surprised when you first brought it aboard but at least she has something to do other than piloting the Zep.

You walk down to Sumire’s room and knock. “Sumire. It’s Chris. You in there?”

Sumire yells, “Yeah. Come in!” You walk inside, to see Sumire, lying back on the bed, hands tented on her chest. She stares up at the ceiling, a neutral expression on her face. “Hey, Libby. Need something?”

You shrug. “Just checking in. You’ve been pretty quiet the past few days, it’s not like you.”

Sumire shrugs, still staring up at the ceiling. “Well, I don’t have anything to talk about I suppose.”

“No,” says Sumire.

“Okay, yeah, it is that lumbering pillock,” says Sumire quietly. She turns over, facing the wall. “When we first met, I’d never have been beaten. I always win. Then he comes along and wails on me like I’m some punching bag to him. And he does it every time we see him.”

You nod. “Yeah.”

“And he never dies,” says Sumire. “He always comes back. People die when they’re killed you know? What got him last time?”

“A crocodile.”

“Well, I guarantee, he’ll be back with a crocodile teeth necklace or something,” says Sumire. You walk over to the bed and sit down next to her.

You say, “You know, Sumire. There’s no shame in defeat-“

“Yes.” Sumire glares at you, angrily. “Yes, there is.” She goes back to facing the wall. “I swear, the next time we see him, I will kill him.”

You pat Sumire on the shoulder. “That day will come. But right now, don’t sulk about it, okay? It’s not like you.”

Sumire smiles coyly, looking over at you. “Oh? What am I to you then?”

There’s the Sumire you know and love. You sigh, shaking your head, then standing up. “Take care of yourself, Sumire.” You head out of her room then further down the hall. Much as she is a very energetic person, she is still a Jap, they must like their honor or something.

You open up Anneliese’s door, to see her reading through one of the comics you bought her. “Hey, Anneliese. How are you doing?”

Anneliese focuses her attention on Superman at the moment. “I am fine, thank you. This is a very interesting comic.”

You smile. “Well, it’s an American thing, hope you don’t mind.”

Of course, things are still awkward. You say, “So, Anneliese, can I get you anything? Maybe next time, some more books and the like?”

Anneliese nods. “That would be nice I suppose.”

“Good!” you say. “I’ll be sure to pick up something nice for you. Maybe some more of Mister Savage’s Adventure Logs. You enjoying that by the way?”

Anneliese nods again. “It’s a very interesting read. Definitely a lot more fun thatn the stuff I got to do as a kid.”

Anneliese nods, then returns to her book.

You walk into the hangar, where Rana and Jeanine are busy looking over the Panzer IV D2 Energiekanonen. They’ve had to weld a few scraps of metal to the hull to cover up the holes the Storm Ace made, and the turret has been fitted with a new cage mesh roof mostly because they couldn’t find anything else.

Rana says, “Hopefully when we get back stateside, we can repair this thing to its former glory! Just think about it! 75 millimeters of pure anti-magical energy! Not to mention all the modifications Jeanine has been making!”

Jeanine nods. “Tank engines aren’t all that different from Zeps apparently, and this is no exception otherwise.”

Rana nods, smiling. “Well, we wish you two well.”

You sit in the sidecar of Mom’s grand old motorcycle as she drives down the mountain road. You feel every little pebble and bump rock you in your seat, but despite this, Mom is really into the old motorcycles. “You know, kid!” she says over the noise of the engine. “I ought to teach you how to drive motorcycles! It’s like riding a bike, you never forget!”

You sigh. “Yeah, yeah.” You really wish she’d stop calling you Kid.

The Sicilian estate where Mom’s contact lived was isolated on this mountain. You caught sight of it, and were awed by its beauty. White walls, vines, great columns, almost as if the mansion had stepped right out of the Roman Empire.

Mom pulls the Motorcycle up to the gate then stops. She looks around a bit. “You know, kid. My friend here, he’s got a daughter, a bit younger than you. While we work, I bet you two can play together or something.”

You cross your arms, pouting. “Mom, I’m fifteen!”

“So?” says Mom. “That doesn’t mean you’re too old to play kick the can or something.” She shakes her head. “Jeez.” She rolls the motorcycle through the open gates. Despite the warm manner of this manor, it feels quite empty. Plants are overgrown on the lawn, there are wild little rodents running around, and the gardens are filled with dead flowers.

You all step off the motorcycle up at the front door. Mom knocks on the door. “Caldwell? It’s me, Carol! You in there?” Silence. Mom huffs, placing her hands on her hips. “Well.”

You scoot Mom away and plant your ear to the door, listening in.

Hm. Nothing.

You walk away from the entrance and towards one of the ground level windows. You try forcing it open, to which it creaks opens gently.

Mom looks at you funny. “We’re breaking into his house now?”

You say, “Mom, if you would explain things in better detail perhaps, maybe I wouldn’t be breaking into someone’s house.” You hop up and fit yourself through the window leg first. You help your Mom come in a few seconds later. “Now Mom, who is your friend?”

Mom says, “We were classmates in College, his name is Cody Caldwell. Majored in Engineering, was a big Transhumanist too.”

You tilt your head. “Transhumanist?”

“You know,” says Mom, “Big talk about man overcoming itself, being more than just man. Immortality, stuff like that.”

You look around the room. It appears to be a study, with a desk, bookshelves, some papers and books strewn about. You walk out of the study and into the main foyer area. Mom sighs. “I’ve got a bad feeling about this.”

You say, “No. Really.”

Mom quickly unlocks the front door incase an escape is needed. After that, she joins you in quietly sneaking up on that sound. You head up the grand staircase then down into a hallway of what are presumably bedrooms and other living rooms of the like.

Soon, you find yourself getting closer and closer. You can definitely make it out now. It’s a little girl laughing.

Mom whispers to you, “Must be his daughter.”

You nod then pause. It’s in the room next to you. You slowly grip the doorknob, then turn it all the way around, then open the door.

A little girl in a pink dress is playing with dolls, laughing and playing. She’s having a tea party with them. “Would you like some tea, Mrs. Nesbitt? It’s fresh Darjeeling right out of India!” She pours an imaginary stream of tea into Mrs. Nesbitt’s cup. Mrs. Nesbitt appears to be a metal doll, with great glowing red eyes, but in the shape of any old girl doll complete with a metal dress to go with it.

Hm. Seems innocent enough.

Mrs. Nesbitt beeps, her eyes flashing. The girl gasps. “Hm? What is it, Mrs. Nesbitt?” She turns around to the door. Oh no. Please-

The girl screams, loudly. “Daddy!” She runs away.

“Wait!” yells Mom as she bursts through the door. The girl runs away, crying and screaming. She actually circles around you and Mom before running out of the room.

Mom says, “We were invited!”

You say, “Were we?”

“Well,” Mom shrugs. “No.”

You sigh, looking around the room quickly. It’s deliciously pink and girly. But all around are metallic dolls, all with glowing red eyes, staring at you. Okay, that’s kind of creepy, please stop that.

Mom says, “Yep. This is Caldwell’s stuff alright. He was quite the metalworker I must say.”

You nod. “Come on, let’s go.”

You follow the girl by the sound of her screaming and crying. She’s headed downstairs and away. You rush after her, sliding down the railings on the stairs then running after her. She continues screaming for Daddy as she heads through a non-descript door down into a basement.

You both follow her down the wooden steps as the basement starts getting darker and darker.

“Daddy!” yells the girl. “Daddy!”

Mom stops you midway on the steps. The lights come on in the basement, revealing an incredibly vast, huge, workshop full of robots, both incomplete and complete. The girl runs up to one of them, clad in a Trenchcoat and a heavy hat.

“Daddy!” yells the girl. It turns around to her, revealing his cyborg features. “They’re here! They came for me like you said they would!”

Mom shakes her head. “Oh, Caldwell, you didn’t…”

The Cyborg raises his head at you. “I WON’T LET MY LITTLE GIRL BE TAKEN FROM ME!” He wraps an arm around the girl and roars in a metallic voice.

He rips the desk out of the wall, the computers and gadgets exploding and sparking as he throws the huge block right at you. You and Mom duck out of the way right in time for the desk to smash into the wall, exploding in a flurry of wood chips and splinters.

You yell, “Mister Caldwell, we’re not here for your daughter!”

Mom yells, “It’s me! Carol! Remember!? We just need your help!”

“I don’t care who you are!” yells Caldwell the Cyborg, his voice rattling metallically, as he advances on you. “No one is going to take my daughter away from me!”

He looks down at his daughter, who looks uncertain. Caldwell sighs, steam shooting out from his shoulder and into the air, then his drill folds back into a hand.

Mom sighs in relief. “Good, good. Listen-“

“I don’t want to hear any of your excuses, Carol,” says Caldwell. He puts his daughter down. “Carolina, stay close, okay?” Carolina nods.

You tilt your head. “Carolina?”

Caldwell walks up to Mom, towering over two heads taller than her. “What do you want, Carol? Come to break my heart again?”

You blink. You point at him, confusedly. “What’s he-?”

Mom says, “We used to date.” Your disgusted look that you give her prompts her to say, “Before he became a cyborg.”

You nod. “Okay, that makes sense.”

Mom says, “Caldwell. We’re looking for the Lost City of Atlantis. We happen to have something that might be able to lead us there, if you were to help us I would truly be grateful.”

“How?” says Caldwell, crossing his arms. “Like you said, I’m just some nutjob. Remember?”

Mom cringe sinternally, then says, “We need your translator device. You said it can translate anything, German, Spanish, even Atlantean. Especially Atlantean.”

Caldwell sighs, a cloud of smoke leering from his iron nose. “The Translator Device does not come easy. It’s a very delicate tool and I’m not about to-“

You say, “If you don’t give it to us, the Nazis will get to Atlantis first. We have to do this.”

Caldwell glares at you, then hangs his head down. “Fine. Carol, come with me. I’ll show you.”

As Mom and Caldwell the Cyborg hash out terms, you decide to talk to Carolina. You kneel down next to her, smiling. “Hi there. I like your doll.”

Truth be told, the metal doll that she was holding was kind of scaring you. Carolina shyly smiles, looking down. “My daddy made it for me. He says they’re there to make sure nothing sneaks up on me.”

You nod. You sure as heck didn’t. “Well, why were you so afraid of us then?”

Carolina frowns. “I thought you were going to take me away from my daddy. He says that there are people out there who want to take us apart. But he’ll never let that happen.” She shows you her doll. “This one’s name is Mrs. Janissary.” Mrs. Janissary raises her arm of her own accord and waves at you, beeping.

That’s actually kind of charming.

Mom and Caldwell walk over, Mom now holding a strange portable handheld device. Caldwell says, “Hover that over the writings and it should translate with 99.9% accuracy.”

Mom smiles. “Thank you, Caldwell. It means a lot.”

“Sure it does,” says Caldwell.

Then a rumbling occurs upstairs, shaking some dirt down into the workshop. “What was that?” asks Carolina.

Mom shakes her head, sighing. “It can’t be. They couldn’t have.”

“There is!” says Caldwell. “Follow me! Quickly!”

You all run through the workshop, hopping over discarded materials and broken down projects. “Dam it, Caldwell! You need to learn to clean up after yourself!” yells Mom.

Caldwell leads you to a huge circular door. He presses his finger into a hole next to it, and it begins sliding open. Then down the stairs come a force of Storm Elite, Magisch Korps. They yell, “Alarm!” then point their MGs at you.

“Look out!” you yell. Caldwell immediately shields a screaming Carolina with his body as they fire round after round at him. It only succeeds in tearing his coat and bouncing off his durable armor.

The door fully opens, allowing you all to run. He pulls it shut then pulls out a trigger, squeezing it. There’s a huger rumble as the workshop erupts into flames behind you. “Come on!” yells Caldwell as he carries Carolina down the dark tunnel.

You all arrive at a garage where a car has been set up. “But daddy, what about my dolls?” says Carolina.

“I’ll make you new ones, sweetie,” says Caldwell as he straps Carolina into her seat.

You and Mom stand around, looking into the car. “Caldwell,” says Mom. “There’s only two seats here.”

Caldwell looks at her, dumbstruck. “What? When you were going to tell me this?”

“This isn’t the time!” you say. “Look, me and Caldwell will get on the roof, Mom you drive. Alright?”

With some grumbling and other things, you all pile onto the small car. You and Caldwell clamber onto then hang off the sides, holding onto the roof. Mom drives the car down the dirt road towards the Sparrow, parked in port.

“Up there!” yells Caldwell. He points to a motorcycle bearing down on you. It lands next to you, and it’s occupant in the side car stands up and reveals herself and her immense staff with a metal swastika on it.

Well mom did want you to learn how to drive a motorcycle

> Hijack the Motorcycle (97)

You launch off the roof and right into the sidecar, smashing the Magical Girl into her seat. The driver tries pulling out his pistol to shoot at you, only for you to punch his wrist with the rim of your shield. You finish it with slamming your shield into the Magical Girl’s face then throwing her out. The driver tries pulling a hard left to throw you off, only for you to grab him by the collar and toss him off too.

You await the inevitable crash.

Except it doesn’t come. You withdraw your shields onto your back as a singular one, then ride the motorcycle like a bike. You have no idea what you’re doing but you suppose now is a good time to learn.

You drive up next to the car. Mom looks over from the driver’s seat, surprised.

“Look, Ma!” you yell, holding your hands up. “No hands!”

“Very funny, kid. You stay with us,” says Mom.

A huge box suddenly drops down from the sky down on the road in front. It disassembles to reveal a great big tank, sloped frontal armor, and a great big anti-magical energy cannon.

> Hijack the Tank

You speed up, leaning forward.

“What are you doing!?” yells Caldwell.

“I don’t know!” you scream back.

The tank fires, its shot zooming over you and cooking your shield, setting the air blaze and splitting the road. You pull back, popping a wheelie on your bike, then speeding right up the sloped frontal armor. At the right moment, you jump off, landing right on the turret roof.

The Commander pops up, surprised. You punch him in the face then toss him out.

Your turn.

After eliminating the crew, you hop into the driver’s seat and turn the tank around. The controls are actually quite simple. You press down on the gas, getting forced back into your seat as the tank dashes after the car.

You poke your head out of the driver’s hatch. Caldwell, Mom, and Carolina all look at you, shocked. Caldwell yells, “Did you just steal a tank!?”

Okay, this is going to be tricky. You grab a shell out of the ready rack and slam it down on the gas, then climb your way into the turret and into the gunner’s position. You aim it at the ready and willing Storm Ace, time for him to get a dose of ANTI-MAGICAL ENERGY.

You fire, sending a shot right at him, he dodges to the right, too late.

He’s enveloped in the smoke and fire. You drive right through.

You hop out of the hatch, looking around. Doesn’t seem to have made it. Good thing.

Then you’re punched in the face. You slide right down the cupola hatch again, the tank crash into a rock and some trees to a halt. You recover in time to see the top of the turret get ripped open and thrown aside by the Storm Ace, who is now currently scorched and on fire. He stands there like nothing is wrong.

Wow, that’s annoying.

You bring your shield up, blocking a punch which seriously dents your shield. You kick at him, only for him to grab your leg and pull you out of the tank then slam you into the engine block. You feel the air get sucked right out of your lungs as you turn over. He goes to stomp you, but just in the nick of time you roll over, letting him smash his foot right into the engine.

You roll over right onto the cold hard ground, looking around. Mom, Caldwell, damn it, they left you.

The Storm Ace hops down, casually patting the flames off his arms. He reaches down and grabs you by the neck, and you feel the air escaping you further, right until your vision starts blackening and blurring. You stare him right in the eyes, seeing through his cracked eye plates, revealing his steel-gray eyes, bloodied and twitchy.

Whoever the Storm Ace is, he’s no human.

Then the Storm Ace is hit in the head by a rock, releasing you. You land, wheezing and coughing trying to catch your breath.

You look over to see Caldwell and Mom, they’ve come back for you. Caldwell yells as he rushes the Storm Ace, tackling him and knocking him flat.

“Cody!” yells Mom.

You throw your shield at the Storm Ace, seeing it slam right into his face. He lets go of Caldwell, who kneels over, coughing and wheezing.

You slam your shield into his chest, sending him stumbling backwards, then spin your shield and uppercut him below the jaw, smashing his gasmask even further.

“Leave my friends alone!” you yell.

The Storm Ace responds with a punch to your gut, sending you on your ass. He raises his arm to finish you, but with a crack of the air, it’s wrapped up in Mom’s bullwhip. She pulls, sending him stumbling to the left.

You stand up. Now’s your chance.

You spin your shield up to white hot intensity and charge him, yelling. He looks over at you, then as you close in for the kill, he snaps up your neck in his hand and tosses you into the tank’s engine block, smashing the exhaust pipes and denting the armor plate. You fall over onto the ground, wounded.

“No!” yells Mom. She pulls out her gun and fires fruitlessly at the Storm Ace. Her shots only splash shallowly against him as he turns to close in.

He raises his arm in the air, and Mom stands there, pretty much accepting of the fact that she’s going to die right now. But not today. The Storm Ace’s arm is sliced off, blood spraying out from the stump.

>> MAGICAL GIRL LIGHTNING! <<

The Sparrow hovers overhead, it’s automated guns suppressing nearby Nazi resistance. Lightning hops down, brandishing her naginata. “Liberty, are you okay!?”

You say, “I’m fine! I just got the wind knocked out of me!” You stand up, wearily. You look over to Mom running to Caldwell and helping him to the ladder up into the Sparrow. Carolina is riding Caldwell’s back.

Lightning slides up next to you, watching as the Storm Ace picks his arm up then casually reattaches it, balling his once severed hand into a fist.

You both jump over the Storm Ace, then run at him, yelling. Lightning leads, her naginata out like a lance pointed at the Storm Ace. He simply braces himself, ready to catch it, but Lightning then disappears in a flash of purple. You stop, watching streaks of violet flash before the Storm Ace.

Then he is engulfed in a flurry of slices.

“See that!?” yells Lightning. “There’s a reason I’m called Magical Girl LIGHTNING!”

She reappears again, bursting upward and flying down at the Storm Ace.

>> SPECIAL MOVE: VIOLET LIGHTNING! <<

She slices downward, sending the Storm Ace barreling backwards, a huge burning gash streaking downwards across his body.

You spin your shields up, white hot and now sparkling and cackling with electricity.

You say, “Let’s not stick around to find out. Let’s go, Lightning.”

You rush over to the ladder and hurry up as the Sparrow starts flying away from the mountain. The Nazis managed to catch up on the road and shoot at you, their hits landing fruitlessly against the strong hull of the Sparrow’s envelope.

You climb aboard the hangar, helping Lightning in next. You sigh, transforming back into civilian form, Lightning doing the same.

Carolina yells, “That was amazing!” She runs over, mimicking your punching and kicking moves. “You were like- Ah! And he was like- Whoa! And she was like- Yeah!”

Mom says, “Carolina, let’s let them have their rest, they earned it.” She gently nudges Carolina towards Caldwell, who sits in a corner, still wheezing and coughing. She says to you both, “Gutsy thing, kid. Didn’t I say that to stay with us?”

You say, “Oh, whatever Mom. We made it, didn’t we?”

“By all rights,” says Mom. “We shouldn’t have.” She holds up the Translator Device in her hand. “Anyway, get some rest, kid. We’ve got a long road ahead of us.”

You and Sumire look at each other, then collapse onto the cold hard floor of the hangar.
