You are Joshua Thirteen, UNAAF Special Forces Division Seven. A soldier of the highest degree, and have been fighting the war against the demons for the past eighty years. You were winning the battles, but losing the war. Even in the horrors of war, you built a life for yourself with a woman, Lauren, whom you had saved. But humanity was betrayed, you were betrayed. When you recovered, you found yourself in an unprecedented world, a backwards world living in fear of the demons you very nearly triumphed against.

But the strange world you’ve found yourself in is not without allies. The Dragon slumbers nearby. Your lesser demons seem to be scattered around the capitol city of Lyr, though they are resisting your contracts with them. You were just reunited with your younger sister Alice, another child of Special Forces Division Six, and she’s as energetic as always. And if anyone could survive the betrayal that incapacitated you, it would be your brother Matthew, he is surely somewhere in this country, waiting for you to find him.

But for now, you have leisure, at least after you resolve how you just destroyed a blacksmith’s entire workshop due to Alice’s enthusiastic greeting. She’s hanging from your back and gushing about how happy she is to see you again, leaving you to deal with the responsibilities, as always.

“Alice, we can catch up in a moment, you just destroyed this man’s entire shop,” you explain to her as you stand up. She only look to be about fifteen at most, but she has the same high density blood and flesh that you have, so she weighs almost more than you do. Seems that her contracts didn’t wane over the years like yours did.

“Why should I?” Alice asks. She drops down from your back to walk around you. “Look at this place. A shabby blacksmith on the edge of the ghettos? This isn’t the set up for home repairs, it’s too far in the city for farming supplies, the army would never purchase from a crummy place like this, so I have to surmise that he’s making his money illegally. If I had to guess, I could probably dig up a couple dozen rifle barrels he’s been cleaning up to sell to the gangs,” she explains.

You glance at the blacksmith. Shock has turned to fear. “Sis, you still wrecked his place.”

She stares at you for a moment, you can hear the blacksmith shuffling away from both of you. “Technically it was your body that broke it.”

“You hit me.”

“So? You should have been strong enough to catch me like a man.”

“I’ve been regenerating for ages. I’m weak right now, and have no way to pay him back. This is on you.”

“Fine,” she states before looking at the blacksmith. “You can take your bill for the damages to my father, Elector Cubiere. He’ll cover this all. Now let’s go Joshie.”

“Please don’t tell the guards,” the blacksmith pleads as Alice grabs your hand and drags you away.

“Now, where are you staying Joshie? I need somewhere to stay. I’m not on good terms with fatso anymore.”

“Wait, is he going to cover the man’s charges? And why did you call him father?”

“Haven’t you ever heard of going undercover? And, I doubt that guy will ever try to get restitutions, it’s more profitable to stay unknown. So, where are we staying?” Alice asks as she leads you further away from the ruined shop.

Alice != Ali, I didn't catch the similarity in names till too late.

Alice is your sister, she has similar contracts as you. Ali is a demi-human wolf.
>>

True, but, "Half-human descendant of the mighty, honorable soldiers of division six" is a bit of a mouthful.
>>
“I saved a demi-human’s life, and the life of her son, she promised me lodgings and such in exchange. I suppose I could take you there,” you explain as you scan down either end of the road, looking for the Gremlin Brewery. You’ll probably have to resort to smelling out the fermenting grain alcohol.

“Alright, then off we go. Where is it?” she declares, spinning around on her feet just enough to make her sun dress twirl out a bit. The garment is loose, but clearly not something combat worthy, she must be living a civilian life somehow.

“Gremlin Brewery, smells like bad booze apparently,” you explain as you pick a direction and start walking. Alice follows behind happily. There are a few dozen people walking past you on the dirt road, but none of them give you a second glance. A dirty acolyte’s robe must be an acceptable disguise here. “But why the hell don’t you have somewhere to stay?”

Alice shrugs. “You caught me between homes. I was staying with Cubiere, but I finally got fed up with that creep. He had this whole father daughter thing going on and I just couldn’t stand it.”

“So you’ve been jumping from house to house this whole time? How long has it even been?”

“I don’t know, like a hundred some years?”

“You’ve been homeless for a hundred some years?”

“Well, Matt said not to attract attention to myself, to just enjoy a low key life. So that’s what I’ve been doing. Although lately that bastard has been ignoring me completely. He made me take a low key life and then ran off to join the politics game under half a different aliases,” she grumbles as you catch the scent of what you assume is the Gremlin Brewery.

But you grin for a different reason. “Matt’s still alive then, eh? Conniving bastard.”

“We both know he’s harder to kill than you are, and you don’t die when you’re killed. I mean, you had me worried when it took you this long to come back home, but here you are,” she says with a big smile.

“Alice, I gotta know, because I don’t really remember. What the hell happened?” you ask, just outside the brewery.

“What do you mean?”

“To me, the world, everything. This world is fucked up, and I don’t know what the hell happened. All I know is I was betrayed. And then I woke up a two days ago in the middle of a lake.”

“Wait, you mean you literally spent this entire time regenerating? How are you still alive?” Alice asks as she starts poking your stomach.

“Like you said, I don’t die even when you kill me, so what the hell happened.”

“Man, that explains a lot. We both thought you were rampaging through the wastes or something. You weren’t turning up in the cities, Matt couldn’t sense your presence, and the Dragon wouldn’t tell us anything. We thought you were off having a rampage to get it out of your system or something. But someone got you?”

“Yes, someone ripped my head off and left me to rot. Instead I crawled out. And I hope I never go back underwater again. But what happened?”

Alice stays silent for a moment, and you can hear her stomach growl a bit. “Can we talk about this after we get some food?” she asks quietly.

You take a deep breath and let it out, spreading your arms out and relenting. “Fine, we’ll discuss it tonight or something.”

“Roger, this is the place?” Alice asks, pointing at the ramshackle building with Gremlin Brewery scrawled onto the front of it. The entire street reeks of yeast and alcohol because of it, and it looks like it’s only standing up on belief. You nod and she runs ahead of you.

You follow behind her and take a second to adjust your eyes to the darkness. The entire distillery is bare before your eyes, just some crude vats and such. There appear to be no gauges whatsoever on any of them, aside from perhaps safety valves. But as far as your untrained eye can tell, there’s no way at all to regulate the quality of the liquor coming out unless it’s entirely fermented. “Can I help you?” a woman asks from behind a counter. She is sitting with her feet kicked up and has half a loaf of bread in one hand, a flask in the other.

“You’re the proprietor here? I’m a friend of a woman named Ali. She’s back in town, but rather hurt. The doctor Henry is taking care of her at the moment, and she said that you’d be able to put me up for the night?” you explain as you walk up to her. Alice seems to be playing the part of the child rather well.

The woman lights up and drops her feet from the counter. “No way, that bitch is back in town?” she asks. “I have to assume so, because I’ve never met you before, and Henry’s name wouldn’t exactly get around. Sure, I can put you up for the night, I have some shitty rooms for temp workers. And I can give you enough booze that you won’t care that they’re shitty.” You chuckle a bit at the thought that she might actually own enough alcohol to get you drunk.

“The name’s Sin, nice to meet you,” she says, putting her bread down to shake your hand.

“This is my,” you say, but you pause and look over at Alice, who of course has the appearance of a fifteen year old. “niece,” you finish.

Sin shrugs. “She’s your responsibility then. I don’t want a kid drinking any of this stuff. It’s way too strong,” she says as she holds the flask out to you to smell. By your estimate it’s about 80% alcohol. On your stomach, it might be enough to get a buzz, for a moment.

“So, we’d be happy in the room you have available, it’s getting late after all. If you have some food for us though, do you mind if we take it there?” you respond as you wave the flask away.

“Food?” She laughs. “Does this look like an inn? I don’t cook, I go out to eat. I’m actually going to head over to see Ali and make sure she’s alright though, I’ll bring you back something after I see her.” Seems she doesn’t trust you too much.

“I suppose that will have to do. We’re short on cash at the moment,” you say as she starts walking around the counter.

“I might be interested,” you respond carefully.

“Well, don’t worry. It won’t be cleaning out the stills or anything. I can hire half a dozen street rats to do that in half the time and twice as well for half as much. What you might be interested in involves some; lying, bluffing, intimidating, disguises, and looking good at a party. And if you look the part you won’t have to lift a finger. You do know your way around a fight, don’t you? I’ve been in enough scraps to recognize a fighter when I see their eyes,” Sin explains as she walks over to you.

“Is that what you see when you look in my eyes?” you ask as she traces her finger down your arm.

Her pulls her hand back and looks back into your eyes. “Yes, and no,” she answers. “I actually see insurmountable loss. A man with nothing left to lose. And that’s the kind of man I need right now. Either way, you don’t have to answer me now, in fact I don’t want you to answer me at all, yet. Let me show you to the room, and don’t touch my brewery,” Sin explains as she leads the two of you down back hall to a small room.

“I hope you find Ali to be doing well,” you say as she lets you into the room and closes the door behind you. You hear the subtle click of the lock behind you. She definitely doesn’t trust you.

“Flirt,” Alice declares as she stares at you, rather than the crummy room you’ve been put up in. You shrug. “Hey, Josh,” she asks quietly. “You’ll sleep with me tonight, right? I haven’t gotten a good night’s sleep in years. My body lost its edge when it regressed, but I still know what it’s like to be alone in the dark, surrounded by death. You’ll protect me tonight, right?” she asks.

"Of course," you answer, and her face lights up like when you used to celebrate Christmas. "But first,"

“Of course, but first, what the hell happened to me?” you ask as you lean against the only exit from the room.

“How should I know? I wasn’t there, and Matt’s the one that looked into it. Besides, this was a hundred some years ago, even if I had known, you expect me to remember?” Alice asks as she confidently walks up to you.

“Memory can be stored in the soul, neither of us should ever have trouble remembering anything, you know that. And if Matt looked into it, then didn’t he tell you something? I assume you worried about me.”

“Worried? About you? The almighty Dragon Tamer, savior of lives, destroyer of alpha demons? The Joshua? I’d sooner worry about the sun super expanding,” she responds rather flippantly.

“What about Lauren? She would have worried, she would have gone looking for me. And she sure didn’t find me down under the fucking water.”

Alice’s shoulders droop. “We don’t know what happened to your wife either. Shortly after we lost track of you, she disappeared. We went to the Dragon, but he just said that we shouldn’t worry about it. Who was I to say anything to him? I was just a little girl without home or country, and he’s a god.”

1/5?
>>
“So you were alone this whole time? What about Matt?”

“Well, not the whole time. My fungus is always with me of course, and I spent the first years with Anak, my marauder. But you can’t keep a demon without them getting caught. Eventually he was killed while I wasn’t around. He had gotten real old, the immortality hadn’t transferred back to him since it was just a prototype. A couple of thugs ganged up and killed him in our home. After that I kind of just drifted. The GRD fungus is the only demon I have left that’s still alive, so I was kind of expecting to kick the bucket eventually.”

“Wait, what? What does the demons dying have to do with you dying?” you ask as you step away from the door and kneel next to her so that you aren’t looming over her.

She’s surprised. “Oh, you wouldn’t know, would you? Turns out that when your demons start dying off, the corruption we’ve been staving off snaps back into you full force. Eventually, it becomes too much for your body and your soul gets ejected. All of our other brothers and sisters died over the years, what few of them survived to see this world of so-called safety.”

“We’re the only three left? All of them died?” you ask slowly. When your sister nods you fall back and sit on the ground, letting your gaze drift down from her, to your hands. “How many of them made it out?”

2/5?
>>
“Ten others. When the gas attack killed headquarters, we had to cancel all of our missions in the restructuring. And we kind of just slipped out. There really wasn’t anyone around to say otherwise. If it makes you feel any better, they all managed to settle down and have kids, eventually. Except for Paulie, but he slept around enough that half the elves today are straight out of his pants.”

“That’s good, I guess,” you say, your voice catching in your throat. “I really wanted all of us to get out of the war, you know?”

“Well, you set the example Joshie. You proved it was possible,” Alice says as she holds you by the shoulders.

“This is a really fucked up world, you know? I don’t know how it got like this, but this isn’t what I wanted to see when I got out with Lauren,” you say as you wipe the tears away.

3/4
>>
“Things can always change. Like your hair, we need to fix this. You look like my grandfather, not sexy at all. If you were to find Lauren right now she’s probably scream. We’re going to get a good razor and a pair of scissors, and I’m going to clean you up right proper and get you back that sexy ‘Last Man on Earth Fighting’ look you had going for you when you first met her,” Alice says as she runs her fingers through your hair, pulling it back and forth to look at the hack job you did to it. “Sound good?”

You laugh a bit and the tears stop. “I have to get to the Dragon.”

“Sure, but now, no more talking about this stuff till we get food. And get off the ground, it’s probably covered in puke,” Alice says as she pulls you to your feet and drags you over to the bed. You drop down on it in a heap and Alice climbs next to you. She starts chatting you up about old missions the two of you had gone on.

Soon enough though, she starts talking less and you find yourself retelling the tales alone. Her breathing slows down and she nestles her head against your chest. When Sin finally returns, Alice is fast asleep. She simply leaves you with some kind of meat sandwich and a promise to speak more in the morning. If you had gotten up, Alice would have known that you weren’t right there to watch over her.

When she closes the door on the two of you, and the sun had long since set, you find yourself still unwilling to succumb to sleep. So you start going over everything you remember of the mission you screwed over to save Lauren.

That was pretty much what I was expecting. Didn't think we would get much useful information out of her without incredibly specific questions. Despite the expected uselessness of the girl (so far) I definitely enjoyed the info dump and I'm looking forward to more from her.

Lol I expect most people closed it when you left in the first place. But not me... I keep them up until they 404...

I posted in qtg, but I know a good number of my players are too smart to look in there, I'll just have to put a reminder in at the start of next thread
