You are Joshua Thirteen, of UNAAF Special Forces Division Six. You are one of the most powerful weapons ever created to fight against the demon infestation destroying the world. Alongside your brothers and sisters, you have been sent out on countless battlefield to claim victory back from the clutches of the monstrosities. But this mission is different.

You are used to straight forward assaults. A demon is attacking somewhere, kill it. A platoon is stranded, cut a path to them and get them out. An alpha demon was been found nearby, slaughter it. And the brass would always send you with half a dozen of your brothers and sisters to fight alongside you. Sometimes, they’d even send you to the field with your contracted demons. But this time, it’s just you and your brother, Matthew. And your mission is information gathering.

“How you feeling Josh?” Matt shouts over to you. You’re strapped in on opposite sides of a prototype HALO drop pod. You doubt the device was designed for the weight of the two of you, and the whole structure is rattling in the air friction. The parachute overhead is supposed to decrease your terminal velocity, but you’re pretty sure you heard it snap off when it opened.

“This is going to be a painful landing,” you respond as you pull out an Ambrosia packet and suck it down. The golden fluid hits your gut like fire. Just one packet is enough for a grown man to grow an arm back if it doesn’t kill him. It’s practically just a light snack for you though.

Matt taps the computer screen to his side and powers it down before leaning over to you. “I’ve got good news and bad news, which do you want first?”

“You’re just going to tell me the bad news anyways, so get it out of the way,” you respond, tossing the empty Ambrosia pack aside.

Matt smiles and digs his sunglasses out as he says, “Right you are Josh. We are quite off course. Like, fifty miles off course. We’re going to have to cut through the thick of the demons to get to the lab, and then we get the info and get out.”

“Good news is we get a good look at whatever killed everyone here?” you offer as you cinch the support belts around your chest tighter.

“Nah, the good news is,” Matt says as he flips his sunglasses on, “welcome to Sin City, population you, me, and a few thousand demons. I’mma steal me some poker chips.” The thrusters burst into life, grabbing hold of your descent and slowing it as best as they can. You grab hold of your rifle and sword and hug them to your chest.

“This is going to be really fucking annoying, isn’t it? Do we have clearance to kill whatever is down here?” you ask over the roar of the rockets.

“Only if we see the thing. Our number one priority is getting the Compass and getting it out. HQ is just going to nuke the whole city as soon as we’re clear of the blast wave and call it dead. Make sure your comm stays working so they don’t fry us too. I don’t really need a gamma ray tan,” Matt says as he grabs his own weapons and kicks his feet up against the opposite side of the pod.

“Aren’t you going to put your seatbelt on?”

“I’d rather take the hit and keep moving than take the hit and be tied down. So, how do you want to do this, now that the plan's changed? Straight offensive? Sneak through the old casinos? Split up to cause a distraction?”

>I’ll take point, let’s just cut through

“No need to waste time in a fight, let’s just sneak over with attracting as little attention as possible to ourselves. Nuke’s coming anyways. Not going to lie though, it’s going to feel weird, leaving them alive,” you say as you check your rifle over. Fifty caliber hollow point rounds fired semi-automatic with twenty round mags, a gun just a bit too large for a normal foot soldier to carry, but a godsend on the battlefield, the Mjolnir Battle Rifle.

“Sounds good. That lets me pocket some American souvenirs,” Matt responds, giving you a thumbs up. At about the same time, the thrusters run out of fuel. The drop pod thrums as crash pads pop up on every side.

“Hey, do we know where we’re going to land?” you ask as the drop pod begins to twist in the air.

“We’re travelling at about a hundred kilometers an hour, in heavy desert wind. Not really,” Matt says just before the edge of the drop pod clips something, probably a rooftop. Both of you swear and grab hold of the frame of the drop pod as the spinning presses both of you against the outer wall to the point that it nearly rips in half. The drop pod slams into another rooftop and you can hear the surface beneath implode at the impact, but the crash pads manage to propel you back up. The third impact goes straight through glass, you can hear it shatter outside and rip through the air bags.

The steel cage crashes and rips through the building, tossing the two of you from side to side as it falls apart. When it comes to a stop, your head is halfway through the support truss and Matt is upside down.

1/2
>>
You groan and untangle yourself, wiping away blood from your various contusions so GRD can seal them properly. “Whoo! That’s an experience I don’t want again,” Matt announces as he flips himself over, dislodging the drop pod from whatever it was embedded in and dropping it up five feet. By the time you make sense of gravity again, you realize that you’re the one hanging upside down, and quickly disentangle yourself. “They should just use this as an opening kinetic strike against Alpha Demons. No human would survive that shit,” Matt says as he kicks the door off the pod and strolls out.

You follow behind him and the smell instantly hits you. The entire city is covered in a miasma of death. The foul odor burns your lungs and leaves a black haze across the once grand city. Las Vegas had of course once been a grand city, but disaster after disaster had reduced it to a skeletal rubble. Until UNAAF decided that it was isolated enough for testing on the Compass, no human had lived here for years. And now demons have taken residence.

Matt whistles as he walks over to the nearest window. “Yeah, I think this was an alpha. Not much else can consume an entire city like this,” he says, pointing to the thick, black tendrils winding around the buildings like ivy. Small creatures are running about the roads a dozen floors beneath you. It seems you’re about halfway up an old hotel.

“Doesn’t change the mission objective, let’s get moving to the Compass,” you say as you turn and start walking away from the window.

“Charging into a fight isn’t my style, you know that. If I see an opportunity, I might duck over to identify the thing, but I’m not going to bother fighting it,” Matt explains as hangs his sword from his back and follows after you with his hands on his Mjolnir.

“I just hope nuking the thing will kill it. Remember that burrowing roach we found outside New Orleans? ‘Oh, we’ll just nuke it!’ Damn thing bifurcated twice with no size reduction and we had to clean up the mess before it could eat our freighters, and I’m not even going to bring up fucking Godzilla,” you say as you kick down the rotting door to the floor’s main hall. Only must and sand has found its way to the hall, so you don’t slow down.

“Which is why I want to investigate it, but the Compass is much more important, and it’s a confidential kind of important too. They should have let us bring our normal squad. If we had Frank and Paul with us, we could just go over and gut the damn thing,” Matt says as the two of you hop over the stairway balcony and drop down three floors to land on the mezzanine.

The stench of death is much stronger here, both of you quickly silence yourselves and creep forward to the railing over the lobby. The black roots have spilled through the front entrance like a great, grasping hand. And there are marauders gathered in front of it, but they’re sitting still. Marauders don’t stay still, ever. You’ve seen Akab spend five hours walking into a wall because he was asleep.

“An Alpha with a marauder pack. What are you thinking?” Matt whispers.

“Let’s find another exit, staying on the rooftops will be good,” you whisper back to him. He nods and steps away from the railing. You watch the marauders for a moment more and start to follow him across the mezzanine.

The support beneath you cracks. Matt jumps away before it can propagate, and you lunge forward to avoid the collapse, only to hit an even weaker section. You and the floor crash down to the lobby below in a roar of breaking wood and concrete.

Your reactions slow the world down for you as the dust settles. The marauders are slowly turning to look at you, and they’re all unarmed. They’re also covered in wounds that don’t bleed. They don’t appear to have any method of contacting the rest of their pack, and there’s only four of them. The Mjolnir’s report will be too loud, leaving you only your sword. Furthermore, Matthew is making no move to come to your aid. He must be planning to stay undetected. If you can kill them all before word spreads, you can rejoin him, else you’ll have to take the job of decoy now.

Something is bothering you about the roots though.

Time starts to flow normally for you as you drop your Mjolnir and grab onto your sword. You’re already sprinting towards them before they even get to their feet. Your sword is nearly as tall as you are, and solid steel. It’s designed to be able to break through defenses that gun ships would otherwise be needed for. Your blade hits the first marauder in the midsection and cleaves through him with a wet thunk.

Oddly though, he doesn’t scream or even react as you cut him in half. But you can’t spare the time to focus on him. You shift your grip on your blade as you step forward, and stab the tip of it into the chest of the second marauder. Blood sprays out the back of the demon as you heft him up on the end of it to smash him into his comrade. The weight of the marauder was more than you expected however, slowing you down too much.

The fourth marauder is attacking you from your side. But he isn’t screaming, he has no war cry, and his attack is slow. You easily rip your blade from the marauder’s corpse and jump back, avoiding the clumsy strike. These marauders all smell like death, but you run the last one through nonetheless.

You catch your breath as the last of the debris settles in place, and the four marauders drop to the ground in bleeding piles.

That was easy, far too easy. However it’s controlling the marauders must be significantly reducing their combat capacity. Some of their limbs are still twitching, but marauders are simply hard to kill.

Then the black roots twitch and retract, prying themselves from the floor and rising up into the air over you.

You back up and scan the lobby for other exits, Age has surely claimed the elevators, and the collapse blocked the paths deeper into the building, leaving you only the path blocked by the demon, and returning where you came from. You start dodging back as the appendage hoists itself up like a seven fingered hand. You notice a bulge in the center of it, but Matt makes his move first.

As you leap back up to the mezzanine, leaving a sizeable crater, he leaps down with his sword high over his head. You can see the air around him ionize and spark as he builds as much electricity into his body and his blade as he can. Just before landing, he swings down with all of his might, burying the electrified blade into the base of the appendage.

The entire city shakes and rumbles as roots everywhere contracts. Black blood sprays into the air as the roots drop down on top of the still moving marauders. “Keep going! It’s regenerating! We stand no chance against this thing!” Matt shouts as you start sprinting down the hall. He jumps up behind you and follows as fast as he can, but you can clearly tell the shock took its toll on him.

Rather than a window, you quickly find a covered bridge over to an adjacent parking garage. You stick your shoulder forward and simply burst through the glass doors blocking your way, and continue on to the crumbling concrete structure.

You skid to a stop and let Matt catch up. You can go higher in an attempt to stay on the roof tops, or you can stay low and fast, cutting your way through.

“We’re going high, come on,” Matt says as he runs past you and up the ramp.

“Exactly what I was thinking,” you shout as you follow after him. You can hear the rumbling of the roots sliding across the ground, smashing aside the rusted car frames still sitting behind. The demon is looking for you, but you are small, and it is very large. You follow Matt as he picks a direction. The two of you vault off the side of the parking garage and land on a nearby roof of some indistinguishable building and keep running. The black haze in the city is getting thicker and thicker, rising up from the streets to hang between the skyscrapers that have yet to fall.

The tallest one in the city is coiled around by the roots as if it were climbing up it, but as you watch, the roots constrict and snap the building in half, letting the top crash off to the side and freeing the tendrils. Without having to say anything between the two of you, you both speed up as much as you can, leaping from rooftop to rooftop as the mass of tentacles lumbers after you.

“Sure could use a gunship right now,” you shout as you’re finally forced to hit street level in the suburban surroundings of the city.

“Or if we had just landed on target,” Matt shouts back. “We wouldn’t have to deal with that,” he says as you see a wall of the roots surrounding the laboratory location.

“Guess we have no choice but to confront it.”

“Just be careful, something must be preventing it from getting inside. You’ve heard of the Annihilation Wall, right? I’ve heard that they may have been researching that here, before we lost contact. But if it couldn’t get in, then how the hell did it kill all of the researchers?”

“We’ll figure it out later, for now we climb,” you shout as you continue sprinting.

“Figuring something out later is a recipe for disaster, always have a plan. I’ll think of something,” he shouts back as you get nearer to the living wall. But if he does think of something, he doesn’t tell you. The two of you split from one another and take different avenues of approach. The roots are coiled around each other eight stories high, but are poorly interlinked.

You leap from ledge to ledge, cleaving a foothold for yourself when there isn’t one, and you reach the top in little under a minute. But then you see that the roots are tighter at the top than the bottom, as if it were constructing a dome around the research facility. Glancing over, you see that Matt hasn’t made it to the top yet, or is purposefully staying back. Either way, it’s bad to stay atop a demon for long. You jump off the edge, hoping to slow your descent by cutting into the inner surface with your sword.

Your plan works for a moment, your immense strength allowing you to keep a grip of the sword even as it slices through the fleshy tentacles. But then the wall breaks apart, each limb freeing itself from the others. And the one you were on swings inward, catching you in the air. You free yourself easily enough, but your sword gets stuck. And then it’s too late, you crash into the concrete roof of the laboratory, and break through.

All of your bones shatter as you’re pressed between the girth of the demon and the building. Your limp body crashes through the next three floors as well, carrying ever more debris with you.

When you finally hit the bottom, you bounce off the steel floor and find yourself in darkness.

1/2
>>
The pain is immense, but not unknown. You force your muscles into alignment as GRD springs into action to hang your bones back in place so your stem cells can disseminate through your blood along with the Ambrosia. You grunt and grit your teeth as your body stitches back together stronger than before over the course of about ten minutes.

When you get back to your feet, you’re sweating, panting, too dreary to focus your eyes, and are certain you don’t want to take another hit like that without more Ambrosia. Above you, you can see the five story hole your body made, and the small rays of light escaping around the root. You’re in the depths of the research facility, time to find the Compass and get out.

“I swear to God if Matt used me as a meat decoy again I’m going to rip his arm off and beat him with it,” you growl as you sit down and cover your eyes with your hands. It’s tricky, but you have a bit of a sense for how your body adapts ever since you bound that skinshifter. It’s especially easy when your body is regenerating like it is now. With a bit of focus and blocking all incoming light, you’ll adapt.

When you take your eyes away, your pupils are inhumanly large, and you have the same reflective layer behind your retina that nocturnal predators have. And you can see as clearly in the dark as if it were just a dim room. But the process wasn’t fast, and now you can hear things moving in the building around you. About a dozen humanoids are shuffling about in the upper floors, but you don’t hear anything on this floor. But when you listen closer, you hear something that seems just a bit like music.

You head out of the storage room you crashed into and quietly head towards the music while watching for an AI interface terminal. You eventually find one about halfway to where the music is originating from as you judge, and try to boot up the computer system. The terminal itself comes to life just fine as far as you can tell, but you can immediately tell something is wrong when the AI avatar tries to render.

The model is a mismatch of correct parts and default parts, the skeletal rigging is completely skewed, and the face is practically blank. Instead of a coherent voice, it’s stuck in a quiet stutter it can’t break out of. This would be why HQ couldn’t connect to the sight remotely.

How am I delivering on the mission by the way?
>>
>>31353783
i like it, but somehow i don't feel like we're -that- powerful
>>
>>31353825
If it helps your mental scale, Marauders are basically the roaches from TerraforMARS, and the Alpha demon swatted you down through 7 stories of air, into a roof, and through 5 stories of reinforced building. You got up ten minutes later ready to go.
>>
>>31353825
We really haven't been flaunting our power at all, mind. We've been trying to play it safe this entire time.

It's frustrating to me, because I want to see how much RIP AND TEAR we're capable of at 70% power, if we could kill things bare-handed at 1%.
>>
>>31353940
You realize we ran from the Strip, to the suburbs of Las Vegas, on rooftops, in a matter of minutes right? that's like seven miles minimum.

We also had no issue breaking a steel truss with a skull during the crash.

We also killed four marauders literally before the dust settled.

We've seen quite a bit of power.
>>
>>31353940
We'll probably get the chance at the end.
>>
Ignoring the music for now, you make your way to the nearest staircase you can find. There is a small chance the beings above you are survivors, and not demons. When you reach the floor above, negative three you believe, you find the blast door is sealed in place, preventing all access by typical persons.

You kick the door in and walk out into the hall as the three inches of steel rattles to a stop. In the nearest lobby area you find them. They were clearly the scientists, researchers, and soldiers stationed here. Each of them are covered in blood stains from multiple bullet wounds, but the bleeding has stopped. And the stench of death is as thick as it was in the city.

You doubt any of these people are still alive. The Alpha demon is some kind of animator demon. It must have found a way to infect a few of them and spread a pestilence to kill everyone inside so that it could capture the facility without actually entering. One of your tertiary mission objectives had been to secure any information you could from survivors, but there are none left here. You failed that mission objective. But you can still retrieve the Compass, and Matt should have the blackbox from the drop pod.

Leaving them be could be troublesome later. They may look like humans, but you’ll have to kill them. You scowl as they start stumbling towards you in a blind anger.

Actually, you weren't issued one for this mission. Not exactly unusual, you don't even have body armor. Sending you out on your own is apparently more reliable than trying to get military technology to work correctly.

Perfectly fine choice, and the sword is entirely logical when you're trying to stay quiet. But I really don't want to give you the impression that your rifle is useless. Semi-auto .50 hollow points will do enough damage to the right targets.

>more reliable than trying to get military technology to work correctly.
That explain why we got paired with Matt in this mission.
Is Joshua bad with computers and high tech shit ?
>>
You sigh and shift your grip on your sword as the dead start to attack you. You widen your stance and cleave through three of them in one swipe, their spines ripping apart with wet snaps as the two halves of their bodies fly in opposite directions. The remaining nine suffer similar fates as you dance across the lobby. When you come to a stop, all of them are still facing where you were a moment ago, none of them even had time to look at you as you flew through them.

You wipe some of the blood from your face and collect the few dogtags you can before walking back down. The miasma of death is lingering on your body like a plague now. When you return to the lower floor, you notice that the music has stopped, but now you can hear the hum of the AI Cores.

The entire facility seems abandoned, but then you start noticing some bodies. They’re slumped against the walls in various rooms, each of them alone and with a bullet hole through their heads. A few are self-inflicted, others done by another. This must have been their last refuge, and they started killing each other and then themselves when they knew that they would simply succumb to the demon if left alone.

>>
You’ve been on too many battlefields to count. You fight against death, and act as its harbinger. Through your force of body and mind, you are not afraid of death. But your skin crawls at the thought of so many suicides, such hopeless desperation. When communications first dropped with this outpost, no alarms went off. A few days later, a standard military detachment went to investigate and never returned, reporting only that something huge was in the area. Drones scouted the area over the next few days, and at last you and Matthew were sent in to clean everything up. These people could have been holding out for days upon days, listening to the shuffling of their deceased friends above their heads. This is no place for the living anymore.

As soon as you reach the doors to the AI Core, you feel the presence of the air shift. An instant later, Matt walks around the far corner and waves. “You had shit luck getting in here, didn’t you?”

Not especially, but long range communications are a bitch. Communication Satellites can only stay working for so long, and we can't put more up there, all ground based communications are long destroyed, plenty of demons cause immense static in electronics, and any gear you're given has to survive multiple week long treks to somewhere they can get you out safely. No information is better than bad information is the current adage.

That's the explanation you've been given anyways.

“Looks like you got in easy,” you say as you look him up and down. You can’t spot a single drop of blood on him.

“Sorry bro. I had to test something and I kind of figured you’d handle yourself better than that. You seriously got your sword stuck in it? Come on. But the good news is I determined that while this Alpha may be big as fuck, it’s not very smart. It can’t seem to do two things at the same time, and even then there is a big time lag we can exploit. If we make a stink at one place and run to another, it’s not going to know to attack the other, it’ll be convinced we’re at the first place,” Matt explains as he walks up to you, grinning wide enough to display his fangs.

“Sounds good, did you find the Compass?” you ask as you open the door to the AI Core, but stay in the hallway.

Matt shrugs and digs into his pocket. He tosses you a strange device. “The thing’s broken, and the data is irretrievable. Unless I can fix the AI real fast, this is a failed mission.”

“Then get to it. You’re better with machines than I am,” you say as you step aside and examine the bauble. It’s about the size of a human skull. The main mass of it is some kind of semi-solid crystalline sphere, and it’s banded in circuitry. It seems to have some power, but with no buttons on it, there’s no apparent way to work the device, and it’s doing nothing by itself.

“I fucking hate reversing corruption,” Matt grumbles as he starts pulling the core apart to get access to all of the panels and buttons that are nearly a mystery to you.

“So you demons finally forced your way down here,” a woman says from behind you.

You nearly jump through the ceiling as you spin around and rip your sword free to put it between you and the person who managed to sneak up on you. Nothing ever sneaks up on you, not once. “I’m not a demon. Matt, get out here, we have a survivor,” you say as you slowly lower your weapon. The woman is young, late twenties maybe. She’s holding some kind of personal tablet in her hand, the light from its display is the only thing letting her see you at the moment. Judging by her dirty attire, she’s been down here the entire time. And the pale gauntness to her face means she hasn’t eaten.

“Can’t say I believe that Mr. Demon. Your eyes are glowing, you’re flipping around a metal sword bigger than I am like it’s a paper fan, and the most damning of all is the Compass says you are,” she says as she calmly points at the device in your hand.

“The Compass? But it’s not doing anything at all,” you respond as you hold it up to the light. Upon closer inspection, you’re certain you can see an diffuse spread of some kind of particulate inside the crystal, but it’s entirely nonreactive at the moment.

“That’s one of the bugs we never worked out. It stops working when it gets near a demon. Judging by the mess you demons causes us, all of our developmental difficulties were actually because you bastards were getting so close. Still, didn’t expect to see such human like demons,” she explains.

“I told you, I’m not a demon. My name is Joshua, I’m from UNAAF Special Forces Division Six.”

“There is no Division Six. We don’t even have a Division Four,” she responds as she picks up her tablet and starts working on it. You notice the music resume as she does so, and she’s barely paying attention to you.

1/2
>>
“Actually,” Matt says as he sticks his head out of the AI Core room. “They skipped Four, fucked up Five, and we’re Six. We’re the rescue team for that thing.”

“Doesn’t matter, I can’t stop you no matter if you’re human or demon anyways, Mr. Demons,” she says as she continues focusing on her tablet.

“You know, it’s possible we could save your life right now. Do you mind not playing video games while talking to us?” Matt asks. You know he’s irritated, but as usual with your brother, the inflection in his voice doesn’t falter in the slightest from pleasantly amiable.

“The hell is a video game?” you ask.

“You’re just digging yourself a deeper hole Mr. Demon. Everyone knows what video games are.”

“Hey, cut the guy some slack. We don’t get time off. All we do is go around and save people like you, risking our lives in the process. Our only rewards are when you people thank us, or if the boss manages to scrounge up some more supplies for our next mission,” Matt explains.

“Must be a pretty thankless job being a demon.”

“Josh, why don’t you handle this? The more time we waste, the more the Alpha has to screw us over,” Matt says as he returns to the AI Core.

You nod. “Who are you anyways?”

“Lockheart, Dr. Lauren Lockheart. I was one of the researchers under Giotto here,” she answers, brushing the hair from her face to look at you. You’ve seen the kind of eyes she has before. A doppelganger once ambushed a patrol and nearly killed every soldier. Only one of them survived. He took the head of the doppelganger back to base, made his report, and just stopped eating until he died. This is the first time in years you’ve been able to save a civilian, and she’s already resigned to die. “Now are you going to kill me or not Mr. Demon?”

You scowl. “I’m not going to let you die. I’ll get you out of here even if I have to drag you out,” you declare.

She laughs a bit in bemusement and disbelief.

Sometimes, I really wish I could go back and edit my posts a few days later. So it goes.

Also, a reminder I totally forgot to include in the OP, but there was a large chunk of exposition I added to the end of last thread, explaining why we're in a flashback at the moment. If you didn't read it, make sure to go back and check my last text wall.

That's thread though. How are you liking the flashback, the quest as a whole, etc.?

As per usual, this thread will likely linger around till tomorrow for discussion, but I'll see what I can do before I fall asleep tonight.

It's already been archived by the way, so don't forget to vote and such.

I don't get why so many of you are unhappy we're in a flashback. Isn't this giving a large amount of context to everything we're doing normally?

I do not like flashbacks in quests. If the info about past events are necessary, I'd rather they are told like a story or something. I don't like to play the past.

I'm thinking about what could be accidentalky revealed if I were to continue this flashback right now. And it would reveal quite a bit. Not to mention you all know how the rest of the story goes more or less. So I'm thinking I might go back to the present next thread. Thoughts?

I straight up don't want to tell you about something you noticed, because IC you wouldn't think anything about it but a particularly sharp reader might unravel the whole thing . But you did notice it, as will matter later.

But suffice to say, you obviously rescue her, eventully fall in love, get married, try to retire, get betrayed, wake up in the lake. This is already known.

I am considering dishing out some fond memories. Maybe as rewards for things like fanart or something.

>>
>>31366218
>Care to elaborate on your reasoning? I find those to be quite fun to write, particularly dream sequences.

To be honest, I'm not sure.
I can maybe explain why I don't like them in quests. I think it is because I ultimately see quests a games (even though I read them for the story and have no qualms reading entire quests from the archives without ever participating), meaning that there are goals and rewards, a sense of progression. Each task we set out to do, should come with some kind of a reward, imo. Be it a skill improvement, equipment, companion, etc.

Flashbacks provide none of it, especially in this quest, no matter what we do in the flashback it wont provide us with immediate rewards, no new levels, no new equipment. They also don't provide any kind of risk, we know that MC is alive so whatever happens in the flashback is of no consequence.
Dream sequences are not always like that, in fact, one can gain significant knowledge and power through them so I just kinda dislike them. They still slow down the game and make the quests feel tedious (to me)

I hate point of view changes because of bad experiences with otherwise very good quest.

Ultimately, I see quests as zero-sum processes. I fully expect any quest I follow to suddenly disappear forever (that way I get disappointed less), so each update which does not deal with immediate and present game progression is an update lost to me.

I understand that it is a video game logic and perhaps playing too much of them is the reason I have it.

This is just my opinion and preference. I understand if there are people who love them.
Note, I haven't read the current thread yet so I don't know how much everything I say applies here.
>>
>>31366939
Well damn... Can't really fault your reasoning. Seriously good for you for actually having a good reason behind your opinion.
>>
>>31366939
Well, I only really have three important things to respond with.

If I put my name on it, I don't arbitrarily drop the quest.

You should totally read the thread.

The flashback is primarily for characterization, and if you do it right, foreshadowing. It's a very powerful tool at delivering information to the reader/player at the proper timing. Information about macguffins and what the world used to be like.

For example, it's unlikely that you'll see your wife in the present any time soon, but she is a very important character. If I were to just ignore her until you find her, your motivation would be rather lacking. And it's clumsy to just whack you all with "but your waifu bloo bloo bloo"
>>
>>31367201
>You should totally read the thread.

I will, of course. My autism prevents me from reading quests without having read all of the previous threads. I've just been putting it off for a while.

>For example, it's unlikely that you'll see your wife in the present any time soon, but she is a very important character. If I were to just ignore her until you find her, your motivation would be rather lacking.
yeah, that makes sense. Players are more likely to find a new waifu in meanwhile if this is not addressed properly.

So, we should get some speculah going

If we were betrayed, it had to come from HQ, no? What would they benefit from doing so?
>>
>>31369130
Unless I've missed someone, there are only four people we know about who are still alive right now. Let's assume the traitor's still alive as otherwise... It's just unfulfilling, you know?

So there's Lauren, the Dragon, Matt, and Alice.

I wouldn't be surprised if Lauren was behind it simply because so many stories go that way but that's literally my only reason for leaning in that direction. We don't know much about her.

The Dragon's obviously up to all kinds of shit but I doubt it was behind a gas attack on HQ.

I see no reason why Matt would want to do it. I guess him being separate from us a lot in this mission could be construed as suspicious?

I see no reason why Alice would want to do it.

For what it's worth. I don't think we have enough information to know who it is at this point unless Sherlock Holmes is joining us for this quest.
>>
>>31369521
Things I forgot to mention.

One other reason why I doubt it's the Dragon is because you can't be betrayed by someone unless you trust them. That was clearly not the case from Joshua's thoughts and actions.

The only other thing I can think of is that it was either a character that hasn't been introduced yet or some faction that wanted to decapitate the military in order to take control of the war against the demons. I guess time will tell.
>>
>>31369521
>>31369638
Good reasoning, we may have to get our tweed caps out though.

There's also any number of our or our sibling's demons that could have done it. And there's of course the amorphous blob known as UNAAF.

Fucking mystery mixed with high adventure.
