The year is 1938. The Great War has long past and now is the time for innovation, exploration and adventure.

Throughout the world, airships are now common sights, airplanes have become the flying car, and high speed trains rule the transportation industry. Men and women of derring-do travel the world in search of ancient artifacts and long-thought extinct animals. Technology becomes almost indistinguishable from the magic that exists in the world.

But not all is right. In the ruins of post-war Germany, a new power rises led under the banner of Adolf Hitler, threatening to destroy the balance of the world. To the far east, Imperial Japan expands and slaughters its way through China. Air pirates dominate the skies and prey upon the lifeblood which now flows through the air. The occult and the mysterious strike terror and fear into the hearts of many.

That’s where you come in.

The Magical Girls come from a mysterious background, nobody knows where they come from or who they are. All that’s known is that they are powerful beings brimming with magic.

You are Magical Girl Liberty, fifteen year old Christine “Chris” Hunter.

The World of Tomorrow needs a new kind of hero.

“So, Mom. We’re finally doing it.”

“That’s right, kid. We’re about to go find Atlantis.”

When the Shepherd’s Journal was firmly in the grasp of good hands like your mother’s, Operator #5 managed to assemble as big of an expedition as he could. He called in mercenaries of all kinds, from air pirates to submarine pirates. All of them united for the biggest payoff in a very long while. The Lost City of Atlantis.

That also dictated acquiring a few vessels to transport goods and supplies down through the ocean. Because Operator #5 couldn’t actually build a submarine large enough for that in the space of a few days, he instead acquired a small squadron of subseaplanes AKA planes that could traverse both sky and sea. Something out of the Jules Verne novels Dad used to read to you as a kid.

You stood on the deck of the aircraft carrier, letting the cool sea breeze chill your bones and keep you alert. You need to be ready for this.

Mom looked down at you, her expression filled with a bit of concern. “Are you alright, kid? You’re not scared are you?”

> “The only thing I’m scared of is freezing to death.”

“Freezing to death?” says Mom. “That’s kind of weird.”

You shrug. “It’s like drowning I think. Just one of those quiet ways to die.”

“Hm, didn’t realize I raised a morbid kid like you.”

“I didn’t realize you raised me at all.”

Mom chuckles, placing her hands at her hips. “Okay, that was actually pretty funny, kid. But really, you understand the line of work I’m in right? Of course I wouldn’t have time to raise a family. But I raised you as best you could, didn’t I?”

“Mom.” You cross your arms, sighing deeply. “The only thing you really taught me was that Dad and I were less important to you than some trinket in South America that needed to go to some museum or some ancient writings that needed to be translated. If you did raise me, I must say that you did kind of do a bad job.”

Mom frowns, her eyes avoiding your own. “Well, I suppose I can’t argue with that, kid.” She places a hand on your head, ruffling up your neat hair. “But hey, just try and take care of yourself, alright?”

“Yes, mom.”

With that, the both of you leave to make your own preparations. Mom leaves to ready up her own specialized P-40 Seahawk subseaplane. You look around to see your fellow Magical Girls making their own preparations. Sumire, Rana, and Jeanine are getting themselves ready with some oxygen tanks and some high powered flashlights. Mister Caldwell, who after some talking with your Mom, has decided to join you in flying the master subseaplane, a modified seaplane called “The Princess” which will carry your modified Panzer IV D2.

You help Rana into her harness, tightening the straps on her back. Sumire meanwhile plays around with her lights on her shoulders, turning them on and off again. “Why do we need these lights?”

“Because,” says Jeanine as she walks over, crossing her arms. “It’s really really dark in the ocean, Sumire.”

“Why are you even coming, Jeanine?” asks Sumire.

“Because anything you find in Atlantis that’s worth anything, half of it goes paying it towards me,” she says. Sumire is about to say something, probably along the lines of how she didn’t agree to it, but Jeanine further says, “And no, you didn’t agree to it. But if you don’t agree to it, I will strip the clothes from your back and the skin from your bones if necessary.”

Rana frowns. “That’s so mean.”

“That’s the reality of it,” says Jeanine as she examines her C96 Mauser.

Sumire huffs, sitting down on the deck, pouting. “It’s my money and I want it now.” She looks over at you. “You probably don’t have to deal with this, Chris.”

“You’re right,” you say. “I don’t. Want to know why? It’s because I’m actually responsible with money.”

You sit down next to Rana. “You doing okay, Rana?”

Rana nods, twiddling her fingers a bit. “Yeah, I suppose.” She looks over at you. “You know, Chris. I was wondering, do I feel useless to you?”

“Of course not,” you say. “Why would you think that?”

“Just-… I don’t know. I don’t want to be useless. I want to help,” she says.

“You’re helping us by being here and now, Rana. Just consider that enough,” you say. “Work with us, we find the city of Atlantis, we keep it safe from the Krauts. I’d say you would’ve helped out plenty there.” You smile, placing your hand on her shoulder.

She smiles back at you. “Well, thanks, I suppose.”

“Right,” you say. You stand up, then along comes a little Robotic drone with a TV for a face. That must be Operator #5. “Sir?”

Operator #5 contacts you through this drone. “Liberty, Bomber, Lightning, Siren. Nice to see you all. I trust you’re all ready and prepared?” You all say yes. “Good, very good. I Just want to say good luck. The fate of Atlantis is in your hands now. Godspeed.”

The four of you stand at the edge of the aircraft carrier. Behind you, the subseaplanes start revving their engines and spinning their propellers, taxiing behind you in a great column.

Sumire grins. “Race you down?”

“Regardless,” you say. “Ain’t a race.” You start at a run, leaving all the others in the dust.

“Hey!” yells Sumire.

“But now it is!” you yell. “You’re on!”

Sumire, Jeanine, and Rana follow after you. The edge of the aircraft carrier gets closer and closer until you jump off, going into a dive into the water. As you fall and let gravity be the harsh mistress it is, you break free from your civilian selves, and transform into the girls you really are.

You break into the water, the deep sound of water rushing through your ears and clothes keeps you alert as the other girls join in. You tap your right ear, where a small radio has been ported.

“Everyone make it?” you say after donning a mask.

“Yep!” says everyone.

You all begin swimming down. In just a few short minutes, the planes come after you, breaking through the water with deafening explosions of water. They turn on their powerful headlights, and follow you down. You swim down into the deep blue sea, keeping your eyes open.

“Man!” says Lightning. “You weren’t kidding, Jeanine! It is dark down here!”

“Stay frosty,” you say. “Could be anything out there.” You look back to see the small squadron of about ten or so planes, including Mom’s Seahawk and the Princess in formation behind you. “Mister Caldwell, you have the book. Is there anything we can expect?”

Mister Caldwell sounds like he’s fumbling a bit, then he says, “According to the translation, in order to find the gateway to Atlantis, we must enter the lair of the Leviathan.”

“Cool!” says Lightning. “Giant sea monsters, never fought those before!”

“Well, there’s a reason most people don’t,” says Jeanine.

You dive down further, turning on your shoulder lamp to allow you to see into the deepening darkness of the ocean. Huge, ragged, sharp, columns of rock and sand jut out from the sea, like an immense canyon.

“Alright, kid,” says Mom. “What’s the plan?

You all go down into the rocks as a group. You and the Magical Girls keep an out at the front as the planes follow behind you.

“Mister Caldwell, it’s getting a bit dark down here,” you say.

“Right,” says Mister Caldwell. “Hold on. Bringing spotlights.” Out of the bottom of the nose come two spotlights, which turn on and light your way with little difficulty.

Lightning says, “So when we do we get to fight the giant monsters?”

“Now, Lightning. It’s not a race to see who gets eaten,” you say.

“Hold on, radar’s got something,” says one of the mercenaries.

You move around one of the great huge columns of rock towards where the radar signal was last spotted. Lightning can barely contain her excitement as she bobs and waves around, water bubbling behind her. “This is going to be awesome!”

“Now, Lightning,” you say. “It could just be a shipwreck or something.”

“That’d be cool!” says Rana.

“No it wouldn’t, Rookie,” says Lightning. “Let’s get on it!”

You continue swimming on down, the planes following behind you slowly as you see just what it is.

> Investigate the Ship

“There might be some gold, Lightning, who-“ Lightning speeds past you, sending you end over end as she forcibly breaks into the ship.

Typical.

You and Bomber enter in behind Lightning, with Siren taking watch outside. “Gold, gold…” Lightning whispers to herself as she creeps around the rotting, molded, darkness of the old ship. Scattered about are bones, dust, crates full of worthless items, and other things.

Bomber says, “I’ve got a bad feeling about this.”

“Really, rookie?” asked Lightning. “Hadn’t noticed. There’s no gold in here!”

You say, “Maybe you’re not looking hard enough.”

Suddenly, the ship shakes a little, knocking mold and grime off the rotting wooden walls. “What was that?” says Lightning.

Then the floor explodes as a gigantic mouth immediately swallows up Lightning. She disappears behind an incredibly huge set of teeth.

“SUMIRE!” you scream.

You yell as you propel yourself through the water, raising your shields at the monstrous beast. It simply smashes you through a wall, disorienting you and leaving Bomber alone with it.

The beast explodes out of the ship, sending wooden fragments and sand everywhere in a giant cloud of miasma. Bomber and Siren retreat while firing their guns at it, sending nothing but raw energy at it. It barely even flinches as the energy rakes and burns its hide.

“What the hell is that!?” yells one of the Mercs.

“Don’t care, fire-“ Mom is interrupted by you swimming into the would-be path of their torpedoes.

“No! Sumire is inside! I’ll handle it!” you shout quickly. You turn around and propel yourself back at the monster. You raise your shield and slam it right into the monsters great big nose. It shudders throughout its entire body like a disturbed spring.

“Sumire! Talk to me!” you yell. “Sumire!” The beast opens it mouth again, showing that its jaws are bereft of Sumire. “Sumire!” you scream.

You roar as you spin around, spinning up your shield at the same time. The shield turns red from sheer energy and heat, bubbling up the nearby water. You toss it at the great beast’s throat.

The back of the beast’s neck explodes as it passes through. It screams in a guttural growl muffled by the water, then collapses onto the ocean floor, dying. Red blood flows into the water like smoke.

Bomber and Siren swim next to you. “Sumire,” says Siren. “Is she-?”

You say, “I don’t know.” You tap your mask. “Sumire! Are you alright? Talk to me!”

“Sumire, please! Don’t mess around, you idiot!” you scream. “Sumire!”

You feel something break inside of you. “Sumire!”

Then the beast’s belly explodes, a naginata breaking out of it. Your heart swells as Lightning claws her way out of the belly of the beast, covered in its stomach acid and blood. She shakes herself, letting the water do most of the cleaning for her as she quickly swims on over.

“I’ll be damned!” yells Bomber.

“When I call for you, Sumire, answer me!” you shout. She looks at you surprised. “Don’t ever do that again!”

Bomber and Siren glance at each other, then back at you.

“Okay,” says Sumire. “Glad to see you too, Libby.” She smirks, leaning in closer. “Why, want to give me a kiss?”

You sigh, rubbing the bridge of your nose. “Let’s just keep moving. There’s nothing left here.”

With that, you continue on forward through the dark canyon. Sumire, much to her credit, stays close behind you. At least she’s learned her lesson. “Mister Caldwell,” you say. “You think that was the Leviathan they were talking about?”

“Nah,” says Mister Caldwell. “I mean, it seemed pretty far from the entrance.”

Mom says, “We’re basically looking for a crevice that’ll lead into an air pocket of some sort. Seems too far for it to be the so-called Leviathan.”

“Wait,” says Siren. “Shine your lights over there.”

The Princess’ spotlights sweep over the sandy ocean floor, finding their beams interrupted by deformed, rotted, shipwrecks littering across it. “Whoa!” says Lightning. “You think there’s gold in any of them?”

The shipwrecks stretch all over the floor, even on top of some of the rock columns which tower around you. Mom says, “Amazing! I can make ships of all eras. I think I even see a Korean turtleship over there!”

You look around. You must be getting close.

Mister Caldwell says, “Hold on. We’re getting something on the radar. It’s moving.”

“Is it another one of those giant monsters?” asks Lightning hopefully.

You swim around, the planes following. Mister Caldwell tracks the radar signature’s movements. It would be heading around you one time, then it would blow right past you. Lightning says, “What’s this thing’s deal?”

You say, “It’s stalking us.”

“We can take it, right?” asks Bomber.

“Of course,” you say. “Just stay calm.”

“The signal’s closing in again,” says Mister Caldwell. “Fifty meters, thirty… ten.” He pauses. “It’s right on top of us.”

You look around. Nothing but rocks and open water. How could it be on top of you?

Then something blows right past you, smashing into one of the merc planes and blowing it up before the pilot can even scream. “Whoa!” yells Mom. She and the squadron of subseaplanes evade out of the way, scattering.

“What is THAT!?” yells Siren. The giant lobster-like creature looks down on you, its red eyes illuminating you and the other Magical Girls.

“Whatever it is!” yells Lightning. “Let’s give it our best shot!”

The four of you propel yourselves at the Leviathan as he maneuvers and slinks around to you as if he wasn’t five stories tall and bigger than the aircraft carrier that brought you in here. Bomber throws his Thompsons away in favor of an M2 Browning, while Siren drops her C96 Mauser in favor of a very ornate axe and round shield.

The planes fall in behind you. “Torpedoes! Fire!” yells Mom. The planes fire off their torpedoes, speeding them through the water past you and right at the Leviathan.

They explode, bursting into smoke and concussion, not even scratching it but sure getting its attention if it wasn’t already gained.

“Lightning!” you yell. Lightning nods, then you grab her wrist, spin around to gain as much momentum as possible, then send her flying right at the Leviathan.

She laughs as she glows violet in her charge, sparks flying as she readies her naginata.

You spin up your shields and close in, punching and slicing through the tentacles lining the great Leviathan’s face. You deliver one great blow to its center, denting it. Sparks fly out at you, forcing you to back away.

“It’s a machine!” yells Bomber. “Amazing!”

The Leviathan speeds away, leaving you all in his wake as he retreats around a column. The subseaplanes speed under you then pull an Immelman right over your heads, following him. “We got him now!” yells one of the Mercs.

The Leviathan turns around, facing the planes, then the tentacles lining its face come together, glowing at the tip. It fires a great beam of electrifying sparkling energy, disintegrating a plane and sending the rest of them scattering.

You yell as punch with all your might right at the apex of the beam.

The Leviathan’s face explodes, sending it back sinking to the ocean floor.

“Woo!” yells Lightning. “Get some!”

Siren says, “I didn’t even get to do anything!”

The Leviathan’s body slams into the floor, shaking it for miles and crushing the shipwrecks that just happened to be underneath it.

“Right,” says Siren. “Let’s get moving then.”

“Hold on,” says Mister Caldwell. “I’m picking up a new radar signature. It’s big.”

Suddenly, out of the darkness and the rock columns comes a great big submarine, armed with great big guns, huge torpedo bays, and being escorted by large numbers of soldiers in heavy SCUBA gear. It’s spotlights turn on, blinding you as they wash over you and the planes. The radio in your scratches and screeches.

“Hello there,” says Colonel Engelhardt. “Did you miss us?”

“Engelhardt!” you shout. “How did you find us?”

“We followed you,” she says. “It’s really quite simple. The trail of a Magical Girl is a very visible one.”

Lightning says, “We can take them!”

“I’m afraid not,” she says. “Seize them!”

The SCUBA troopers blast towards you, brandishing glowing anti-magical harpoons and concussion grenade launchers.

> Attack the Submarine! (65)

You swim past all the Troopers, letting Lightning, Siren, and Bomber cover you against them. The huge gun turrets on the top of the submarine turn to aim at you, then they start glowing along their barrels.

“What the hell are they planning!?” yells Lightning as she slices a SCUBA trooper in half.

The guns fire, generating blue-white beams more intense than the Leviathan ever could. They slice across the rock columns, blasting through, smashing through a few of your planes but leaving Mom’s Seahawk and the Princess alive. With guns like those, this submarine could wipe out an entire fleet.

You swim alongside the hull, then start spinning up your shield. Time to become a metalworker. You dig the shield into the side, slicing along the hull as you swim along, too low for the guns to hit you and too fast for the point-defense harpoon turrets.

You reach the stern of the Submarine, finishing your slice and punching out one of the driving propellers. The Submarine starts listing lazily to the right, tilting a little from the damage you inflicted. Hopefully that slice did a number on them.

Your ears perk up, you turn out of the way to dodge a big lobster machine your size as it charges right at you, eyes glowing red. You smash it in the face, bursting the head and sending it sinking. But more are coming, right from the corpse of the Leviathan.

>> ATLANTEAN LEVIATHAN SPAWN <<

“To hell with this!” yells Mister Caldwell as the last Merc plane gets swarmed by Leviathan spawn. “We’re out of here!” He starts driving the Princess deeper into the canyon, followed by Mom.

“Follow us!” yells Mom.

> Follow Mom

You and the Magical Girl slice and punch your way through the SCUBA troopers and the Leviathan spawn as they snap after you. The Princess roars ahead, with Mom’s Seahawk following close behind.

“What are we looking for, Caldwell?” asks Mom.

“A crevice, somewhere in the ground!” says Mister Caldwell, obviously trying his best not to crash into anything. You scan ahead, looking.

“There!” you say, pointing ahead to the deep split in the ground. “That’s got to be it!”

Siren looks back. “I don’t think we have time to check, let’s go!”

The Princess and the Seahawk roll upside down, then dive into the crevice. You do the same and go after them as the Leviathan Spawn start pursuing you into the crevice, their mini-energy beams snapping at your heels and burning at your hair.

“They’re getting awfully close!” says Bomber.

“The pass!” yells Mom. “It’s getting narrow, be careful!”

The Princess’ wing clips against the wall, nearly taking the entire wing off. The debris flies right at you, almost hitting you. “Watch it!” yells Lightning.

The Leviathan spawn manage to catch up to you, skittering and screeching as they come at you.

Lightning swims next to you. “I got your back! We can take these guys!”

You spin up your shield, waiting for the spawn to start closing in. They screech as they come within spitting distance. Perfect. You throw your shield at the wall next to them, causing them all to pause in confusion. The shield impacts, causing the earth to shake, then start falling apart on top of them.

The pass immediately drops down on them, crushing all of them right before yours and Lightning’s eyes.

Lightning glares at you. “You’re no fun.”

“Shut up,” you say. “Let’s get out of here.”

You swim after Siren, Bomber, and the subseaplanes. The swim at least is finally a pleasant one as you swim up the pass, then make your way into the air pocket. You surface, out of the water next to planes, seeing the Princess beach itself on the landing next to the Seahawk. Caldwell starts opening up the nose to start unloading the two vehicles, the Panzer IV D2, and the truck for auxiliary supplies.

You trudge out of the water, into the welcoming arms of Siren and Bomber. They smile at you. Siren says, “Impressive work you did out there, Liberty.”

You nod, waving your hand a little. “Wasn’t anything special. All in a day’s work.”

“I still think we could have taken them,” says Lightning.

“You think that a lot,” you say. “Doesn’t mean it’s true.”

You finally have some time now to rest, and rest is something that you really want right now. What should you do?

You yawn, walking up next to Mom as she consults the Journal. “You doing alright, Mom?”

“Sure, kid,” she says. “We’re one step closer to the city of Atlantis.” She looks at you, snapping her finger. “So count your blessings, we may have bested them today, but they’ll be following us. We got to race them to it. It’ll be just like the old days!”

“Really? The days where I sat at home alone while Dad worked and you went off on some wild adventure?” you say simply.

“Well, when you put it like that,” says Mom as she rubs the back of her neck. “Look, kid. Just appreciate the progress we made today. I’m not asking you to forgive me for running out on you like that.”

You shrug. “I never wanted an apology in the first place.”

Mom narrows her eyes at you, then sighs. “Get some rest, kid. You deserve it. We’ll be moving soon.”

With that, you leave your Mom and hop onto the back of the truck, nestling yourself into a pile of boxes. Lightning sits next to you, her naginata resting on her shoulder. “Whoo! Can’t wait for some real fighting!” She looks over at you. “Right, Libby?”

You’re already asleep.
