Ligish is mostly giving a reserved but earnest sigh of relief that the armed altercation outside the palace is not going to escalate into another war with Turtak. Sharo and the other Footmen patrol the streets to check for stray monsters, and for once the people actually welcome them. In the pyramid, however, the mood is decidedly more somber. Ninlil is laid to rest in the pyramid's catacombs, an honor that was not even afforded to the previous king. It takes a small team of servants and a giant improvised stretcher to get her in there. All her friends and family attend her, even Iltani, who'd spent the entire previous day in hiding after having sworn never to come back down here. Her father and brothers, having given free rein to put a memorial to her anywhere, have chosen the room that the king traditionally stays in when he comes to visit. After the ceremonies are all finished, the relatives go to their chiseling, the Blood Priest retires to his study, and the Gold Priest retires to his slightly mutated whore, the rest of Ninlil's acquaintances find themselves at a loss for what they ought to do next. They can't just disperse as though nothing had happened. The sounds of hammers echoing through the pyramid prevent anyone from sleeping, and Hunzuu claims that it's even making Mr. Clicks fussy. So everyone awkwardly gathers in Nakurtum's room, just because it's furthest away from the hammering, and takes turns telling stories.

You are the upset scorpion. You told everyone that it was because of the noise in the halls, but you think the real reason Mr. Clicks is fussy this afternoon is because he can sense that something's wrong with you. He paces up and down your arm, even though you've already given him a nice locust.

As Tabni-Ninsun tells everyone the histories the eunuchs taught her of how the pyramid came to be built, Meluku gravitates toward the vast array of weapons on the walls. Nakurtum has to forcibly pull him away from a low-hanging war sickle, and that turns into Nakurtum explaining why little kids shouldn't play with blades and how no, Nakurtum was much older before she started learning to kill people, so Meluku should just wait until he's older. It would be amusing if your mind weren't filled with the burning need for revenge.

> Pay attention to Tabni-Ninsun. Who builds a pyramid, anyway? Let alone one with doors big enough for scorpion-girls to squeeze through?
> Ask Nakurtum about her first kill. That should amuse Meluku for a while.

Tabni-Ninsun's story has the slightly resentful undertone of a tale she'd been forced to memorize, but she manages to add amusing embellishments here and there.

Ever since it was founded by an exiled fifth son of a king of old Gesh who couldn't keep his dick in his pants, Ligish has been known as a city of liars and backstabbers. Its greatest enemy has traditionally been itself. Ligish is the only city where trade is forbidden on the feast day of Shamash - in all other cities, everyone is simply expected to deal with each other honestly, and no legal cases from that day are admitted. In Ligish, that tradition turned into such a tangle of fraud and theft that trade became impossible. The king's army fought with itself and broke into six fighting schools. Even the priests fought against each other. Three centuries ago, when the priesthood threatened to dear the whole city apart with blight demons and blood mutants, King Zuuthush had them all moved together into a single structure, so that if they meant to kill each other they could at least do it from the comfort of their own home. He made sure to make it too opulent for any one of them to refuse. It worked, but Zuuthush was rewarded by having all the priests turn against him once their decadent pyramid was finished. His seared skeleton was the first to grace the catacombs. Thus the priests in Ligish are no longer divided according to the deities they worship bu according to the kinds of magic they practice.

Rabi-Tammuz has never heard that story before, apparently, and he finds it very amusing. You've never heard him laugh before. It's terrifying. "Oh my! I picked the right city," he says.

"Who's next?" you ask. "Nakurtum, what was your first kill like?"

Nakurtum is now holding Meluku out at arm's length as he tries to grab a barbed dagger off the wall. "Okay, kid, sit back down and keep your hands to yourself and you'll get to hear about how I sawed somebody's throat open with that thing." That gets him to settle down surely enough.

"Okay, after I ran away from home and came to the city, I had to convince the Adventurers to give me the time of day. I didn't look like this yet." She makes a muscle with her artificial arm. "I mean, I was tall, but I was kind of... doughy. So I offered to help the next person who wanted the Adventurers to kill someone but couldn't afford to pay. I ended up having to catch this caravan that was already headed away from the city and kill this Zagrosi guy with his own knife in his own tent. It was exhausting, but hey, it was the first honest day's work I'd ever done, really. Afterward I told the rest of the caravan he tried to rape me, and they just let me go! It felt pretty good. I mean, I didn't have anything against the guy, but *somebody* did, so I felt like it was okay to feel good on their behalf."

The armorer has your new measurements already, but right after you molted you'd instructed him to make chitin armor for Ninlil before converting your own bronze armor, so he's probably partway into that task.

> Ask somebody else to take a turn

I don't even know who the chitin should go for now.
It might even be ruined.

I want our chitin to go somewhere it will do some good. I don't want to lose more friends.

You nod. "Well, that was... nice. Anybody else?

Soul-of-Lightning raises a finger. "I've got a story! There was this one whore in Turtak with tits that went waaaay out to-"

You interrupt him. "Anybody else?"

Iltani looks a little uncomfortable, thinking that you're looking right at her even though you meant to just scan the room. "Well... I never really learned any good stories. My mama used to make up stupid stories about animals and things, but I think even Meluku is too old for that kind of thing. Sometimes I see things at night, though. You could call those stories..."

"Go on."

Iltani looks around at the others in the room. She seems wary of saying anything that will make people turn on her again. "Most of it is just flying, hurting people, crushing things in our wake, but there are some other things, too. Okay, I'll try to explain it. Don't look at me like that! Look, I'll try to tell it like a story so it's not so weird. Okay, once upon a time, there was this little boy. He lived with these other people who were bigger, but I don't think they were family, they were just sort of friends learning about things together. The earth was wet and kind of salty, and nobody had any belly buttons for some reason. Something was wrong with the little boy. When the big golden lady came and taught everyone how to catch fishes out of the water, one of them bit him, and it just kept bleeding and bleeding and wouldn't stop. His blood was wrong. He tried picking at it, but that only made it bigger. And whenever he'd step on something or bump into something, it got even worse. So the others didn't want to catch fishes with him anymore. I'm sorry. This isn't a very good story..."

Tabni-Ninsun nods. "Yeah, this is gross. This isn't a good story at all. Tell us about the Footmen who had crushes on you!"

> "Tabni-Ninsun, that's the stupidest thing I ever heard. Iltani, I'm here for you."

"Well... she has a point. That's just Pazuzu trying to make you feel sad. Remember, he doesn't really care about you, he's just messing with you!"

Iltani scoots away from Tabni-Ninsun a little more and nods to you. "I'm really sorry. I'm trying to be good for you. Sometimes it's just hard to keep things straight because... like... it feels like most of the things I've seen aren't really things I've seen, so I have to think what's me and what's not. Like, if I feel like going to everyone's houses at night and sealing them up in their basements so they'll be good forever, I have to tell myself that's not me. Or if I want to skin someone just because I know they couldn't stop me, I know that's probably not me."

Rabi-Tammuz shrugs. "It might be. It takes all kinds, dear."

ah crap, anu, you have the habit of making tough decisions out of inconsequential-ish things.

Maybe we can ask for a simple summation of what happened to the boy? Apologize for interrupting her and all that. It's probably pazuzu making her sad, but it could also be, I don't know, pazuzu remembering his childhood weakness.

"So let's talk about things that are you. Like all the footmen who had crushes on you!"

Iltani smiles, sure she can please both you and Tabni-Ninsun and stop everyone from thinking of her as creepy. "Well... there were a lot of them, and I didn't catch a lot of their names. Some of the highborn ones wrote love letters or hymns to Ishtar for me. I told them I could read so they wouldn't bother reciting them to me. Sharo never did any of that, but being a good soldier made him too smug. The first Slinger to be kidnapped wasn't even my idea. This big guy with his beard split by a scar did it to prove that he was worthy of a night with me. He didn't get it. I dunno. I did a lot of things then that weren't me, but I definitely remember thinking that they were all too weak for me. Is that normal? To get bored with a boy if you know that you'd be the one to have to protect him, instead of the other way around?"

"Totally," Tabni-Ninsun says. "Boys who have nothing to offer me except a nice body, I don't keep them around for long. I'm like, 'do you know how easy it is to buy a nice body at the slave market? My cheapest necklace still costs more than your nice body. So understand what you are and don't get too full of yourself.'"

This clearly makes Dadanum uncomfortable. "Er... does anybody else have a story? Anyone?"

"Okay, I'll tell one!"
You don't really want to talk about your war exploits - you're especially worried about that orphan girl who's currently being raised by a giant centipede - so you tell them all about Lady Amata and all your other dead adopted kin. You tell them about how you had a sparring match with this little dead scorpion-girl who didn't look more than seven but completely schooled you with her centuries of training. You also tell them about Humbaba and what he looked like. This impresses everyone except Meluku, so you segue into having to explain to the child who Humbaba is and how Gilgamesh and Enkidu slew him with their absurdly large swords and 600 pounds of armor. Meluku likes that a lot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOrfrHys8g8

Nergal-Edir is the hunchbacked cook. He's pretty gloomy and just tries to stay out of trouble, but he's kind of the first person to treat you like a normal person after your transformation. You give Nergal-Edir a nudge with your claw because you suspect he was planning on just listening and passively enjoying the company. "How about you, Nergal-Edir? You never tell me any stories. It's all business with you. I ask you how your day is, and you tell me about how you're running low on salt or something. Tell us more!"

Nergal-Edir is one of the small handful of people not to shrink in instinctual fear from the touch of your claws. He just sighs. "I'll try. How about how my parents met? That's a very romantic story. My mother was rich, you know. A senior acolyte's daughter. Very well sought after. Buth-Shamash tried to win her hand, and so did a ruling hero from Zagros. And my father was only an out-of-work scribe. But with a few well-placed ballads and commendations from the king, he managed to win her over. And then she bore him a hunchback, and he mysteriously disappeared. Very romantic. But the best part was when she put me here and had me pretend to die so she could remarry. Who am I to get in the way of love, after all?"

"Why didn't you tell me that before? That's awful!"

"You just answered your own question, Hunzuu."

You attempt clawhugs. Nergal-Edir isn't really shaped for hugging, but he doesn't resist. "You know, you have a giant monster for a friend now. I can totally kill either of them if you want."

Nergal-Edir shakes his head and rolls his eyes a little. "No, no, Hunzuu. That's sweet of you to offer, but I think I've done them both enough harm already just by being born. They didn't want to discard me; I'm sure it made them feel terrible. I ruined a romance worthy of a song. What revenge could compare to that?"

You hug him tighter. "Well... you're important to me! You're a good person! You were nice to me when I was really scared and confused and hating myself."

"I try. Sorry for ruining the mood. I can try to tell a happier story."

"Only if you feel like it."

"I think I do! All right, once upon a time there was a hunchback, and nobody seemed to notice him most of the time, and he overheard one of the boys who goes out to buy supplies in town talking to Nakurtum. And Nakurtum said that she wanted him to go find her a pet kitten."

That makes everyone laugh. Nakurtum blushes a little. "Well, Hunzuu has her scorpion thing! And this place is crawling with rats. And it'd help make the atmosphere a little cheerier. Make this place feel less like a torture dungeon."

"But this place is a torture dungeon," Iltani points out. "I hope it doesn't become a torture dungeon that smells like cat shit."

"Good for you! Now who else has something happy to share? Rabi-Tammuz, dare I ask?"

Rabi-Tammuz thinks it over. "Happy... and that would make everyone else happy, too? This I'll have to think about for a bit... Well, back when I was still an apprentice tailor, my master wanted me to make a doll for his little girl. The plump kind, stuffed with rags and fleece. I'd never done such a thing before. It should have been simple, but I was eager to please and not mess up this arrangement I had to actually learn a trade. So I sewed the skin together and was about to turn it all inside-out to hide the stitches, when it occurred to me. What if I get the insides wrong? He'll know! What are little girls even like inside? So I made the little parts I could think of and tucked them inside. I made a tiny little heart and stomach out of linen, and a brain out of this long piece of fringe that was going to be thrown out, and some sticks for bones. And even then it seemed a little bare, so I made up some new organs and threw them in. I wasn't satisfied with it. I was sure I'd be yelled at for getting the insides wrong. I begged my master for more time, but when he saw it he said 'nonsense, look, it's even stuffed already! Just sew up that last bit!' He didn't appreciate my work. But I hope his little girl did."

I wonder if babies are naturally afraid of giant scorpion people or if it's a trained response. We'll find out soon enough.

Anyway, we still have to ask Soul-Of-Lightning!

That's sweet, but I'm getting tired.
Let's wrap this up and head to vengeance sleep.

That's... sweet, but in a creepy way.

"That's really sweet! You must make something for Ettu's baby. I bet she's knocked up by now."

"Do you want me to do that before or after altering every single dress of yours?" He says with only a tiny hint of sass.

"Well... finish that one black dress I like first. How about you, Soul-of-Lightning? Tell us one that's not about whores."

Soul-of-Lightning needs a few moment to think of one that's not about whores. The idea of him with a whore is repulsive, but no less repulsive than the idea of you doing the mating dance with a human. "I, well... This isn't a story so much as news, but I was doing like you said and trying to get some of my kin to defect, and I think I did too well. They started having these secret meetings in the hills just outside the repaired gate, and I missed a meeting because there was this new cloudy wine on the market that was MUCH stronger than it tasted, and I never quite caught up with them after that. They were talking about going out in teams to look for something-or-other, and one of them insisted that they had to go as far to the east as they could, past the spiny mountains, because they got a tip from this one girl, or something. I wasn't entirely paying attention, because I still had some of that wine. I suggested going to Ligish, because hey, this is my chance, right? But Trail-Without-Dust said it was already on their list of places to go. A few days after that I saw the wasp-woman for the first time, and the centipede boy started talking about killing traitors, and... well... things escalated from there."

You make a note of all this, but you're starting to nod off. Tonight has helped you forget about your grief for just a little while. But tomorrow, you have work to do.

> You can specify what other kinds of business you'd like to take care of in the pyramid tomorrow. Other than that, I think I'll call it a night here. Sorry it was cut short by 4chan being ass. I'll have another thread tomorrow to make up for it.

Can we get fitted for new armor before our carapace hardens?
>>
>>31672445

Tomorrow, we have other things to do. Don't know what yet though, we've still got a whole day of hardening.

Indeed you can! In fact, you probably have been already. The armorer will want to add more hooks and loops to the bronze plates so he can mount his pet engineering projects on them later. He also has an idea for a system of overlapping scales that will allow your book lungs to breathe while still protecting them from stabbings. You also have the option of adding ornamentation to the armor that reflects how you'd like people to see you.

We should get carvings of spears and lions! And also a symbol of the city, if it has one. Keep away from symbols of the king/priests/factions though.
