This is a starcraft 1 based quest. I generally try to follow lore and game, but I'm not an encyclopedia and haven't read any of the books. For weaponry and powers I’m not always going to strictly follow canon. This gives me greater freedom to allow character customisation and diversity.

I use D20, best of first three rolls, 1 and 20 are crits and cancel each other out. Skills will adjust DC, not give bonuses, for simplicity's sake. Health is narrative based on the game.
The options are a guideline, not an absolute, which is why I will always include a Write in option. Some options I list are good, some are bad, most won’t be really awesome. I leave it up to you to find ways to do that.
>>
You jump out of bed as fast as you can and take all your equipment. Your thoughts initially go to Lisa, but you remind yourself Murphy was going to work on your Wraith today. You hope you can still stop her.

As you run towards Murphy’s home, you telepathically look for Lisa’s mind. You quickly find her, having learned what her mind feels like by now. It seems she’s awake already.

“Lisa, it’s me, Artemis. I suppose you’ve seen the broadcast, so I’ll make this quick. Primus is here for me, I’m not sure why, but the only way to prevent him from destroying everything here is for me to go to him. I don’t know if or when I’ll be coming back. It was nice meeting you. Tell Haverdam for me, will you? Thank you, for everything.”

You feel a very confused Lisa try to respond, but she’s either not good enough with her powers yet or too recently awake, and you just sense a feeling of worry coming from her.
By now, you checked Murphy’s home, but she wasn’t there anymore so you went to her workshop. Now you are there, and Tom tells you she left for the spaceport a few minutes ago.

You rush after her as fast as you can. It seems like she already went into the jungle. A short while later, you find her, already halfway along the path.

“Murphy!”

“Huh? Artemis? What are you doing out here?” She looks confused why you rushed after her, and you guess she hasn’t seen the broadcast yet.

“Change of plan Murphy, I need my wraith today. Sorry, and thank you for everything. And Goodbye.” You’re about to run ahead when you suddenly think of something else.

“…please take care of my tomato in case I don't return.”

In other situations, you might have taken pleasure out of the confused look Murphy gives you as you run ahead, but your mind focusses on the things ahead.
Primus… Why is he even looking for you? You don’t pose a threat to him, and you’ve got nothing he wants. When you thought you’d finally be free, he shows up and comes after you.

You arrive at the Saltlake Spaceport, and and just as you pass through the gate, the official you spoke to when you landed shows up.

“Hello Mr…” He looks at his papers for a moment. “Artemis? Yes, well. You leaving now? It’ll be 20 extra credits on top of your earlier payment.”

You’re in a rush, but this won’t take long you hope. And you don’t want to get into trouble on the planet either, so you hand him the credits.

“Thank you, sir, I’ll send someone over to unlock the docking clamps. Should be there in ten minutes or so.”

As he walks off towards the main building, you can hear him mutter about him having to keep a cool head in a crisis because no one else does.
Docking clamps eh? Guess they’re careful around here.

You continue towards your Wraith, and get everything ready while you’re waiting for the man the official would send. After a minute of searching, you manage to find the IFF settings and put in “Omega”. And sure enough, after about ten minutes, the man shows up, inserts a code on the side of the docking station and continues to open up the docking clamps. The moment he gives you the OK, you blast off into space.

The moment you exit the atmosphere, you see the battlecruiser further on the horizon. It’s much larger than the regular Behemoth Class Battlecruisers, and much blockier. Where the Behemoth has a relatively slender neck, this one doesn’t have a neck at all, and the head is indistinguishable from the body of the ship.

>Pic shows regular BC. Closest thing would probably be the Gorgon Battlecruiser in SC2 but I couldn’t find any decent artwork or renders.

As you approach the battlecruiser you once called home, you think back to the days you spent on it. You were always kept in the centre, where all of the Omega Project rooms were. It wasn’t until you were sent away that you saw anything else. Unless you end up in your old rooms, you won’t have anything to go by, except for the single mission where you infiltrated a pirate battlecruiser. You fervently hope the general lay-out was largely kept the same as the regular Behemoth class when they built the monstrous ship you’re flying towards now.

When you get close, you notice the defence turrets tracking you, but thankfully they do not open fire. Several blinking lights guide you towards a hangar at the side, and you don’t have much choice other than to dock there. It’s the only hangar with its blast shields open.

You carefully fly into the hangar, and the oxygen retention field snaps as it compensates for your wraith entering. The docking clamps accept your wraith automatically, and the first thing you notice is that it’s all automated. When you left this place, it was crowded, mechanics everywhere and people running around. Now, it’s deserted. There’s not even anyone waiting for you. This opens up opportunities.

>1. Go in uncloaked, you’ll find your way towards the bridge openly.
>2. Activate your cloak, sneak in and try to get the drop on Primus. There might be sensors installed there though.

Do we know anything about the location of the life support system?
>>
>>31686049
we should cloack regardless, but I would take my time before actually heading towards primus, maybe there's an armory, maybe we can find explosives there, maybe we can head towards primus once we're holding the trigger to a HE charge right on top of the vital systems of this ship right?
>>
>>31686117
You pretty much don't know anything for certain other than the way straight to the center where the Omega Project stuff was. You could make an educated guess based on regular battlecruiser lay-out though.
>>
>>31686176
>>31686189
Same for any armoury or any other part of the ship, though you're fairly sure the bridge is at the front.
>>
Fuck this, lets go harass the Taldarim and get fucked up on terrazine gas.

>2. Cloak

No need to make it easy for him. He will no doubt continue to hold planet hostage, so if we could find a way to disable weapon systems, that would be nice.

How networked behemoths are? Primus is probably running this on skeleton crew so most is bound to be automated. If we could cripple the fire control...

Barring that, how distributed is power generation on a ship of this size? Maybe we could cut main power of this thing off...

Let's not consider extreme measures like firing yamato cannon without opening the firing ports just yet though...
>>
>>31686049
>3 Cloak and move away from the ship, make an educated guess where the armory would be and head that way, Primus knows that we have arrived, if he really wants us he can try to find us first
>>
>>31686235
You have no doubt that if anything happens to the crew, Primus will know fairly quickly. From the looks of the hangar, skeleton crew is very likely, and you don't know enough about battlecruisers to know about the power distribution. Your only earlier job inside a regular one was to assassinate the captain.
>>
>>31686238

I'm pretty sure he won't stop counting down on his threat until we're face to face. Maybe not even then, since he made himself too public with that broadcast. Maybe we should have asked Lisa to evacuate the settlement until these guys are gone...
>>
>>31686300
he gave us till the end of the day... supervisor, what's the time?
>>
>>31686291

Adjutant doesn't have any handy schematics either, I assume?

Well, so far I suppose we could make our way, cloaked, to the aft and see if we can figure where the main generator is, and try to shut it down and disable the controls. Then head to omega project rooms, try find the 'family', and finally head to the bridge.
>>
>>31686340
Right now at frontier it' about 9:30 am. His battlecruiser is hanging above a different area though, and there are settlements on the entire surface of the planet.

Not to mention that you're fairly sure Primus is a sick enough fuck to count by the battlecruiser's internal clock so you could potentially have hours or minutes.

Do a psionic ping to get measure of the crew. Possibly poke Primus himself. He knows where we are as we landed anyway so there shouldn't be harm in it. Be prepared for retaliation though.
>>
>>31686404
regardless, we should at least attempt to throw him off balance, simply rushing to him would show how much we care about this planet... at least one of the systems should go, the question is which one
>>
>Note: As you may have noticed earlier, I don’t keep track of cloak psi point spending in narration, since you regenerate more than it requires. In combat I’ll resume tracking them, assuming you spent a point on the first round of combat.

To get a bit of a measure what you’re up against, you open up your psionic senses and sweep through the battlecruiser. Primus knows you’re here anyway. What you find surprises you. A skeleton crew, sure enough, but a mere 200 people seems exceedingly low. Most of them are centred around where you’d guess the generators and engines are, followed by the bridge. At the bridge, you sense three immense psionic powers, and you’re sure they feel you too right now. Two of them feel about as strong as you are, but one of them is above them head and shoulders. Primus.

You activate your cloak generator and head into the hallway. Despite your ‘upgrade’ from the temple, you’re still not confident you’re at the same level as Primus, so you don’t intend on playing by the rules. Armed with the rough knowledge of battlecruiser lay-out, you should be able to find an armoury to get explosives, and continue to the primary generator.

You quickly find your plans somewhat thwarted as almost none of the doors you find open for you. Quick experimentation with the first set of closed doors shows that not even decloaking so any optical sensor on the door could see you helps. You continue on your path, but you quickly realise that following the open doors only leads you straight towards the bridge. Seems that despite his lunacy he’s still smart enough to not allow you to roam freely on his ship.

>1. Look for another way. Air ducts or maintenance tunnels.
>2. Follow it to the bridge. He may be expecting you, but your cloak might still allow you to get the drop on him
>3. Write in.

You carefully continue down the path, keeping your eyes open for anything that could point to an air vent or maintenance shaft. The only things you find are small ventilation holes that you’d have trouble fitting your arm in, and you’re beginning to think Primus is deliberately sending you through paths that don’t have any access points to it.

Your theory is supported as you find yet another closed door where you probably could have just as well gone straight ahead to go through the bridge, and instead you have to make a detour.

In the end, it seems Primus has outmanoeuvred you. You’re only one more corridor away from the bridge. You start to feel your heartbeat in your throat. Quartus and Quintus are there too, you remind yourself. Quintus may very well take any order from Primus, but Quartus might be of assistance. He did say not to count on it though.

>Psi points: 5/6
>Cloak is active.

Short reminder of psionic powers:

>Mind Shock: 1 point, 1 turn stun, can be maintained. May be dangerous to use on Primus.
>Kinetic Wave: Up to 3 points. Deals damage and knockback scaling with amount of points used. Psionic shotgun basically.
>Psi Shield: reduce or nullify incoming attack. May be asked for after failed dodge/reaction, or used pre-emptively.
>Matter bomb: 2 points, massive damage to a sphere of up to 2 metres diameter.

>You have a hand cannon, hunting rifle and 2 revolvers. Adjutant advises hand cannon for this range and situation.

>How do you proceed?
>1. Walk in there cloaked, try talking to him first.
>2. Sneak in there cloaked, try to get a good angle and attack him (Will prompt new vote on what attack to use)
>3. Uncloak and walk in there, try talking to him first.

>>31687474
Oh, forgot to add something.

There are roughly 20 people on the bridge other than the Omega's.
>>
>>31687474
It seems we're out of options... a cloak might not be of use, the omega'w probably sense our presence at such short range...
>3
>>
>>31687474

Walk in cloaked, position yourself out of the way.

How durable are windows of a battlecruiser? Too strong to get broken by a kinetic wave if things went downhill, I guess?

No, that's getting ahead of ourselves.

Ask Primus what his intentions are.
>>
>>31687496

Hm, we could try and get one to talk in our stead I guess. Would we need to expend resources for that?
>>
>>31687534
Reminder:
- Psi cloak (You can prevent yourself from being detected by psionics. actual detectors like missile towers, overlords and observers will still detect you. Automatically activates on cloaking, but can also be used without cloak.)

He might have sufficient sensors in the room that relay the info to him, but he won't be able to rely on them as much as on his psychic powers which he'd do instinctively.
>>
>>31687474
I don't think cloak will do much, but better than nothing I guess.

>1: Say hello and ask what the hell his deal is.
>>
>>31687549
Out of precaution, any windows that battlecruiser bridges might have are usually just screens displaying the feed of external cameras.

>>31687563
You have never tried anything like that. You're not sure you could manage, but you could try. You'd have to expend resources and roll for it, but the resources spent would depend on the roll.

I guess benefits from this maneuver would be probably outweighed by resource cost, since we already have the cloak as an advantage.

>>

>You regenerated 1 psi point.

>Psi points: 3/6
>Psi point regeneration is negated by cloak and puppet master upkeep.

You have an idea. You’ve never done anything like it before, and you risk exposing yourself psionically, but you think it’s still less of a risk than just walking into the room like that. You don’t so much open your mind as focus it towards a single person. The normal human closest to Primus himself.

You enter his mind surprisingly easily. Even regular humans should have some form of passive psionic defence, but this one is completely defenceless. At first, you’re overwhelmed by a single sensation. Fear. Fear of Primus. Buried beneath that is a psionically broken mind. Perhaps he could some day recover if he was kept away from Primus, but he expertly dissected this poor man’s mind to have complete control over him. The other 200 crewmembers probably underwent the same treatment. You quickly glance through his memories and knowledge but a lot of it has been scrubbed clean to increase Primus’ hold.

Enough though. You take control of the man’s body, at least partially, and find it again, exceedingly easy. It’s not unlike when you were inside Sextus while you were sleeping, though this time you’re still aware of your own body too. You quickly take a look around. Primus is sitting on the captain’s chair with his mask on, turned towards the entrance, occasionally checking the cruiser’s clock. 2 more hours before it goes into night regime. Quartus and Sextus stand behind him, in full suit as well, and armed with their personal weapons. The rest of the crew is keeping their heads down and quietly working on their consoles.
>>
“Primus.” You call out. You instantly take a psionic shock from him without him even sparing you a glance. It’s very weak though, and you can take it. It seems to be meant for disobedient people rather than Ghosts.

Again you call him by his name, and this time he turns towards your host body. His mask hides his thoughts though, and he just stares at you for a moment. He’s probably realised there’s something wrong with the man you’re inside of now, but it could take some time before he understands what.

“It’s only been two years. Surely you still recognise me?” For a moment, Primus stays silent, in confusion you guess. Sextus didn’t even react, but Quartus is looking at you too now.

“So… Secundus. That’s a nice trick you have there. You should teach it to me some time.”

“Would that be before or after you scorch this planet? Why are you doing this Primus? I’m no threat to you, and you always did find me to be a liability.”

“You’re still part of the family. We have to stick together in troubled times. Septimus always said that, can’t you remember? Once you join us, we’ll go look for him next.”

For a moment, you’re not sure what to say, but it seems your defiance was clearly visible on ‘your’ face, as Primus continues.

“Come on Secundus. We are giants amongst children. Even you. These pathetic creatures that call themselves human have no right to use us as tools. We are better than them in every possible way. We are the true humans. Together, we can build up a new future. I’ve already been preparing the equipment. Soon, there will be a second generation of us. “So, Sextus, Quartus, do you agree with him?”

Primus turns around and looks back at Quartus, and you can sense a tiny bit of psionic energy being used there. Most likely a warning.

“Yes.” Quartus calmly says, but his head is bowed down too now, in clear submission to Primus, and showing you he doesn’t have a choice. Good thing Primus doesn’t know that you’ve talked to him before.

“Please do excuse Sextus, he’s been mute ever since you left. I guess he really missed you that much.” Primus continues when he turns back to the body you were in. You’re not any more though. You’re dashing through the last bit of hallway brandishing your Pacifier Hand cannon, still cloaked.

supervisor noted while back that because he knows the drawbacks of this system, crits are not as game-breaking here...

He’s too fast. One moment he’s still halfway across the room, the other he’s upon you. You barely have time to form a psionic shield in front of you. A searing flash of pain hits you in your shoulder, but thanks to your shield you managed to avoid much worse. You scramble forward onto the bridge, letting Primus pass you by further into the hallway. It seems Quartus and Sextus have abandoned their post and are now standing on opposite sides of the room. The rest of the crew are cowering behind their consoles, trying desperately to be as small a target as they can be.

You refocus on Primus. The attack left him unbalanced, but your getting away from him has given him the chance to recover. You can now clearly see devices of protoss origin around his wrists. Psi blade foci, the weapons of the protoss foot soldiers. You remind yourself that Primus is primarily a close quarters combat specialist, and that any range you have now should be used to your advantage.

psi points: 4/6

>1. Shoot the hand cannon again (clip: 9/12)
>2. Unleash a psionic attack (specify). There’s not much risk of collateral damage now.

This means Primus's attack is turned around and hits him in the face, right?

Turn around you did indeed.

You back away from him while taking aim. You’re still cloaked, and he most likely has to rely on sensors to see you instead of his psionics. It gives you enough time to properly line up your shot. You pull the trigger.

He jumps out of the way, but the bullet still takes him square in his shoulder, cancelling out his momentum. He’s easy pickings now, and you release all the energy you’ve been gathering since you fired your gun and point it towards the entrance of the bridge. It catches him straight in the chest, and you see the air pull together around him, exerting a massive force on his entire body. His suit is ripped to shreds as it takes much of the blow for him. He may be resistant to psionics, but he’ll most definitely have felt that.

You have the advantage now, but it won’t last. He recovers much more quickly from attacks than anyone you have ever seen, and he jumps behind cover. You won’t be able to hit him from here unless you use psionic powers again, and there’s several innocents in the way.

>1. Try to outflank him and shoot him with your hand cannon.

“It seems you have grown stronger, little brother! Good! We’ll need that to fight against the weaklings. Even now they band together in their pathetic dominion to further oppress us!”

You use the time he’s spending on banter to relocate as quickly and quietly as you can. It seems like he intended this battle to take place, one on one, as Quartus and Sextus are remaining motionless to the side. You’re not sure if he’s actually still trying to talk you down, or if he’s trying to distract you though, so you keep your eyes on the console he’s taken shelter behind.

The moment you should have gotten a look at him from your new position, you feel a burst of psionic energy from where Primus was, and… From behind you?

Roll d20 to react.

You immediately throw yourself down without looking, and you can feel the heat of Primus’ psi blades at the back of your head as he barely misses his scissor movement.

You roughly land against a console, and are lying on the floor, Primus looming above you, but you manage to get a shot off during your fall. It grazes his head and damages his mask, and it gives you enough time to prepare your next move.

Of course, this is still pretty much a shotgun blast to the face, it will do severe damage, just not nearly as much as it could have.

>Psi points: 2/3

You unleash your power. A kinetic wave with all the power you could muster blasts forward, and throws Primus upwards. He smashes into the ceiling and falls down to the ground again. You notice some teal energy dissipating from in front of him though. It seems like he has his own kind of shield to take hits.

You quickly point your gun at him, but while you aim, he suddenly shouts.

“Quartus! Sextus!”

The single moment of distraction as you look at the two ghosts at the wall is enough for Primus. You feel another flash of energy, and he’s gone. Not behind you this time, but deeper into the ship. You can feel the residual energy of his flash step linger for a moment.

You’ve got bigger worries now though, as it seems Quartus and Sextus are beginning to move.

>End of Freelance Ghost Quest #18!
>I desperately need some sleep now though. Not giving a vote for next time, I already have some stuff planned.

>Good night people. I had a lot of fun. I’ll stick around a short bit longer but not too long.
