You are Flying officer Julian Reber of the Royal Air Force. You joined the RAF so you could reclaim continental Europe from the BETA, aliens who threaten to exterminate all human life on Earth. You're currently engaged in a massive purge of alien forces in the Italian peninsula.

You've just cleared a beach landing zone for armored infantry and supply lines, but your support has been eliminated by Laser-class BETA and it's just a matter of minutes before the Lasers have you in their sight and this whole operation goes sideways.

"I'm coordinating the squadron," Vivian says from behind you. "Everyone else should be clear of the Lasers, but we're out in the open. We need to either retreat or find cover."

Standard procedure is for naval support to hang back precisely so that it doesn't get sniped by Lasers, so if you leave right now, you can rendezvous with the Royal Navy and regroup. It'll probably cost you your current advantage though.

You could also rush forward towards cover. You're surrounded by ruins, a forest and a mountain range, so there are plenty of places to hide. The downside is that anything that covers you from the Lasers also covers the Lasers from you.

Of course, you could just take a third option and grab the nearest semi-live BETA. You've done it before, but you're not sure if the rest of your squadron is good enough to pull it off.

>"Screw this. Vivian, sound the retreat."
>"Keep moving forward. We need to get to cover."
>"Everyone, grab a live BETA and use it as a shield."

You decide your best bet is the partially tried and mostly true method of using the nearest live BETA as a meatshield. So long as you can grab one and hold on to it, you'll be good to go.

"There's another option, Vivian," you say. "We just grab live BETA and use them as shields."

"... can we do that?"

"Yeah, I've done it a few times," you say. "It works best with Heavy Lasers, but in this situation... I think we might be able to make a wall out of Destroyers if we tip them on their sides."

"That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard," Vivian says. "I'm giving the orders now."

Vivian spots a few Destroyers that are still twitching, but that have had their legs blown right off. It's not going to be easy, and it sure as hell isn't going to be pretty, but you figure you should be able to prop them up on ruins or trees or more BETA corpses or something and turn them into a makeshift shelter.

As it turns out, your assessment was right on the money. Propping up legless, bleeding, half-dead aliens and hiding right under them is even less pleasant then it sounds. The one upside is that you finish before the lasers get in range. As disgusting as this is, it's better than dying.

"Arthur squadron, this is Arthur 1," Group captain Hall says. "We've got this place locked down, but we still have Lasers on overwatch and the rest of our support can't land while they're there. Does anyone have any suggestions."

"I have a satellite picture of the Lasers," Vivian says. "They're in the mountains, so I should be able to plot a course that will let us sneak up on them without exposing ourselves."

"We could just keep it simple," Elaine says. "We can just push the Destroyers forward towards the lasers until we find a better position."

>"We should use the mountains to our advantage."
>"We should just use the Destroyers."

>>31691555
"We should use the mountains to our advantage," you say. "We can use the terrain to our advantage and ambush the Lasers. It'll be dangerous, but I don't think we'll be able to just push these Destroyers around."

"Agreed," Hall says. "Knight, plot us a course around the mountains and keep a close eye on the Lasers. We don't want to get sniped on our way through."

"Yes, sir," Vivian says.

Using a combination of the satellite coverage and of your TSF's sensors, she draws up a course of waypoints around the Laser's line of sight. Assuming the topographic maps are still good, this should be enough to get you through.

"Here's how this is going to work," Vivian says over the squadron's channel. "Everyone will head to their determined waypoints and wait there until I give the signal to move forward."

"You have your orders, ladies and gents," Hall says.

The squadron moves from waypoint to waypoint along the course Vivian plotted out. Vivian herself keeps one eye on the Lasers and another on the TSFs to make sure no one gets blindsided. It's a slow, unnerving journey, but soon enough, there's a whole mountain between you and the Lasers. That's more than enough to keep you safe, if only for a moment.

"Thank God that's over," you say.

"That was the easy part," Vivian says. "We still need to kill the Lasers."

"Have you got any ideas?"

"Several." Your HUD switches to Vivian's tactical display. It's a bit odd to get such a comprehensive view of the battlefield. "The simplest way is to simply ambush them from behind cover. It will take time for them to get a lock and charge their lasers to full power, so it should be feasible."

"And the second option," you ask.

"That one's safer, but less certain," Vivian says. "We can try to bury the Lasers under a rockslide. Our 36mm cannons should be enough to send a few chunks of the mountain rolling down. We just can't be sure that the rocks will actually hit the BETA."

>"Keep things simple. Let's go for an ambush."

>>
>>31692282
"A rockslide sounds good," you say. "We should avoid unnecessary risks."

"At the very least, it'll give us a distraction," Vivian says. "Give me a minute."

It takes a while for Vivian to run the numbers. You'll need to manoeuvre around the mountains while staying in the Laser's blind spots and find weak spots in the mountain. This isn't exactly the sort of thing your maps are drawn for.

"We'll have to play it by ear for most of the way," Vivian says. "At least I can guarantee the blind spots. I'll figure the rest out when it's time."

Between boosted jumps and flight, it takes you half an hour to get in your general positions. It takes another hour for Vivian to find what looks like weak spots in the mountain.

"How are the rest of the squadrons doing?"

"They're waiting on us," Vivian says. "Quite frankly, so long as they're not getting themselves killed, I don't care. I'm not rushing this just so we can get home faster."

"I don't blame you."

Finally, the squadron receives its targets. There's only one way of knowing if this will work or not.

You open fire on the mountain. For a minute, it looks like nothing's going to happen, but then the rocks start tumbling and a large section of the mountain soon falls apart. It's not enough to confirm the targets are dead, so you stick out one of your arms for a few seconds. You step outside cover when you're satisfied that you're not about to be melted by Lasers.

You can still see some of the Lasers squirming under the rocks, but their eyes aren't pointed at you. All it takes to finish them off is a large helping of lead.

"Looks like the plan worked, mostly," Vivian says.

"Arthur squadron, this is Arthur 2," Elaine says. "I wasn't able to eliminate my target. Just give me a second to do this the old-fashioned way and I'll be right with you."

"Understood, Arthur 3. I'm sure Vivian can send you the coordinates."

"I'll just need a second," Vivian says.

Elaine's targets are standing on a small plateau that was just large enough that the rockslide couldn't cover all of it, and it looks too big to just collapse. You'll need to do this one the old-fashioned way.

"We'll ambush them from the side," you say. "Elaine, it doesn't look like a good angle for you, but see if you can get a shot in."

"I've got a decent view of the Heavy Lasers," she says. "I'll wait on your signal."

You very carefully move your TSF into position. You're practically blind, but Vivian's instructions make things a lot easier.

You and Elaine open fire on the Lasers. She gets a few headshots on the Heavy Lasers, while you spray bullets down on the normal Lasers.

It's a near thing, but you just barely have the right angle to clear out the Lasers. You even throw in a few hundred bullets extra to make sure they're dead.

Vivian gives the Group captain the all-clear.

"Arthur squadron, this is Arthur 1," the Group captain says. "Support will be here momentarily. Meet up at the beachhead and resupply. We'll resume the clearing operation once we're back up to full strength."

"Yes, sir!"

The scattered Arthur squadron TSFs link up as best they can and head back to the shore. Elaine hails you on the way back.

"Thanks for the help back there, Julian," she says. "I'm not sure if I would have made it alone."

"It's my job."

"Our job."

You're quite certain Vivian just tried to kick the back of your seat.

"Right, our job," you say.

Elaine smiles.

"Let's get back to the landing zone," she says. "We still have a lot of work to do."

You rendezvous with the rest of the squadron back at the shoreline. There's a barebones forward operating base waiting for you. It's not much to look at, but you can pick up fresh magazines and fill up your fuel tanks.

You refuel first and wait for the rest of the squadron to resupply. Just as the last Arthur squadron returns, Group captain Hall hails the squadron with new orders.

"We've been called in for an extraction," he says. "A UN squadron has encountered heavy opposition 200 miles north of our position. There are closer squadrons, but we're the only ones who aren't busy. We need to get to them as fast as possible and bail them out."

"I have the squadron's position," Vivian says. "At this distance, we'll beat the rest of the squadron there by a relatively large margin if we run the Typhoon's engines at their full potential."

"We need to get there is fast as possible," you say. "Arthur 1, this is Arthur 3. I'm pushing the engines to their limit, so I'll reach the squadron ahead of you."

"Arthur 3, this is Arthur 1. You may proceed, but watch yourself."

"Yes, sir."

You push the throttle as far as it can go and quickly outpace the rest of the squadron. The way there is clear and you've got a squadron waiting for you. It's not like you'll be alone.

"What's the situation?"

"They're pinned down, but it could be worse," Vivian says. "There are no Lasers in the area, so that's something. They mostly have to deal with Tanks and Grapplers."

That gives you a few options. You can gun them down from range and take some of the pressure off, or you can switch to melee and create a distraction. It'll be more risk for you, but it'll make things a lot easier for the squadron if you can pull it off.

"Vivian, I'm switching to melee," you say.

"Understood," she says.

You hit the afterburners as you close in on the battlefield. Just as Vivian said, it's mostly Grappler and Tanks. Meanwhile, the friendly TSFs are in bad straights. They've only taken two or three casualties, but they all look like they've taken some damage. A few of them might be able to escape if they ditched their comrades, but there aren't a lot of TSF pilots who'd be willing to do that.

You suddenly cut your engines and prepare for a rough landing. It's quite a jolt, but you don't have a lot of space to work with. You immediately draw your combat halberd and wade into the fight.

You immediately start hacking at the Grapplers and Tanks. The good news is, you're causing enough of a ruckus to force most of the BETA to concentrate on you. The bad news is, it's not enough. The allied TSF falter and get swarmed.

However, now that you're here, they can eject without fear of getting stranded. A few of them can't eject because they don't have enough room or they just have too many BETA covering them, but you're able to carefully rip the aliens off their TSFs.

You hold your own long enough for the rest of Arthur squadron to show up and clear the area. It takes you a few hours to make sure there aren't any more surprises coming your way and when the all-clear is finally given, helicopters arrive to retrieve the downed pilots.

"Looks like we're done here," you say. "Replacing those TSFs is going to be expensive, but at least it looks like most of the pilots survived."

"We'll finally be going home soon," Vivian says. "After this operation, there shouldn't be more than a hundred thousand BETA scattered across Italy. It'll take a while before they pose a serious threat here. Which reminds me..."

Vivian opens a channel to Elaine.

"Elaine, how would you feel about legally adopting my second-born child?"
