You see what looks like some kind of power plant for a TSF. It looks a bit off, but you can't spot the exact details from this distance. If it's the G-element-based engine Mary was working on, it must be missing the fuel and exhaust ports. You're not entirely sure how it could convert the chemical reaction of G-elements into energy either, or if it can be used to power any kind of flight system, but that's not the most important thing right now.

"Does it work?"

"Mostly," Mary says. "It generates power and according to our calculations, it should be able to run almost indefinitely. Maintenance is a little difficult, but not impossible to handle. The major problem is that it can't interface with a turbofan, so it's useless for flight as it is. We've attempted to find an alternative flight systems, but results have been... inadequate."

"How inadequate?"

"According to our experiments on animal carcasses, the flight mode pulverizes any organic matter within 20 meters of the engine," Mary says. "Until we can find someone to regulate the output, we won't be able to do anything with it."

"Wonderful," you mutter. "Well, I guess that can wait. Shall we begin work on the Excalibur?"

"Certainly." Mary smiles. "We have most of the internal components, but we still haven't picked a frame yet. We do have the materials ready though, so it shouldn't take more than a week or two to pull everything together. We don't have any operations scheduled, so I was able to get additional manpower."

The first frame is the Typhoon, your current TSF. It's balanced for ranged and melee combat, with a slight emphasis on melee. It's also set to become the new standard for European TSFs, so you'll have convenient access to spare parts if the hull takes any damage. It's also not based on military secrets you stole from a foreign nation, so parading it is unlikely to get you in trouble. The main downside is that it's mostly designed for rank and file, so it's something of an all-purpose TSF. The third from is the Su-47 Berkut, Russia's entry for the third generation of TSFs. Much like the Black Widow, it's designed for anti-Hive operations. From what you can tell, the frame isn't as aerodynamic as the F-22 Raptor's, but it should be extremely manoeuvrable in close quarters and it's designed for additional close-quarter weapons. Again, the main downside is that the design is stolen. Russia will be asking questions if they see you parading in a TSF that's only just barely a prototype.

Since you're only using the frame, this is mostly a cosmetic decision. Using stolen TSF designs is going to be the major issue, but for the most part, all three frames are designed for the same combat doctrine. The Typhoon is just slightly more geared towards ranged combat, while the Berkut has slightly better melee weapons. The Black Widow is kind of in the middle, since it was designed for older tech.

Picking one frame over the others won't give you a massive advantage or disadvantage in any single area, so you don't have to decide based on mechanical advantage is what I'm saying.

"What is it with pilots and the Black Widow," Mary asks. "You know it was just a hangar queen, right?"

"It's the principle of the thing," you say. "With additional development, its flight time could have been extended. The Americans just killed it because they wanted an anti-TSF TSF. I'm here to kill aliens, so I need a TSF that kills aliens."

"Fair enough, I suppose," Mary says. "I'll make the arrangements."

Building a TSF frame without moulds is, apparently, not very easy. However, Mary has more than enough staff to take care of it and it's not like you need to mass-produce the components. It also gives you more control over the frame and lets you make some small adjustments to update the design a bit to current standards.


You spend the next week assembling the Excalibur's various components. As daunting as the task seems, it becomes a whole lot simpler when you just think of it as performing You spend a morning assembling one of the arms, then you spend the afternoon working on the other arm. While waiting for more of the components to arrive, you perform computer checks on the parts that have been assembled.

Elaine and Vivian come by a few times during their spare time. They spend as much time with Mary as they do with you. For the most part, you avoid talking about work. You're still exhausted from your operations in Italy and the G-bombing of the Yokohama Hive is still the big news. For Mary's sake, you got out of your way to avoid it.

For the most part, your work progresses smoothly. The internal components aren't quite standard, but the few modifications they've been given aren't extensive, so you're familiar with the way they work and there aren't any compatibility issue.

The main problem is the power plant. Mary wants to be able to replace it with her G-element engine design when it's finally functional, but the size and shape doesn't really fit the current engine design. It takes some finesse, but you leave just enough space to replace the engine black later on. It'll require some fairly extensive work on par with severe maintenance work, but nothing on par with a full rebuild.

Soon enough, you have a full TSF in one of the research lab's hangars.

"That went better than I expected," Mary says.

"The only thing left is the operating system," you say.

You sit at one of the spare stations and call up a computer screen in your retinal HUD. You look for the current Typhoon OS in the lab's database and pull up the design checklist. You don't really need a reference point, but you do need to make sure that you don't leave anything out. Given the number of items on the checklist, there's no way you can keep track of everything in your head.

You spend a few hours going through the basics. The lab was designed for this sort of work, so most of the core code can be added just by clicking on macros. It makes things faster, but you still need to run the numbers. Mary returns just as you're done programming basic movements.

"I added some predictive software from one of Dodger's projects," she says. "You should be able to access it through your console."

"You mean an AI?"

"Just the... inspiration, I suppose you would call it," Mary says. "According to Dodger, it's impossible to create an artificial intelligence; they have to be born through chance. This code created that chance once, so I'm hoping it will do so again."

"I'll add it to the OS and cross my fingers then," you say.

"Oh, didn't I tell you? Dodger and his lady have free access to the lab's network," Mary says. "They oversee most of the projects and provide support as necessary. They must have modified the code during your off-time."

"I really wish you'd told me that earlier, but I guess I can live with it." As much as you don't like people messing with your work, this is Mary's private domain, so it's her rules. "Anyway, how do you want to proceed with the tests?"

You wait for Vivian and Elaine for about an hour before they arrive. The three if you grab your meals - real potatoes, along with fake whatever else - and sit down to discuss things.

"We have working prototype of the Excalibur," you say. "Maybe. At least, it should fly according to our estimates."

"That's a sound endorsement there, Julian," Elaine says.

"There are no certainties in R&D." You swallow another fried potato. "Anyway, we'll be starting the tests tomorrow, so I'll be needing your cooperation."

"I'm glad things are moving forward," Vivian says. "We started off well, but the setbacks and distractions have been piling up."

"I know what you mean," Elaine says. "So which tests are you doing first?"

The rest of the evening is the same as usual. You make small talk while eating dinner and retire to your room. You stay up slightly later to review the Excalibur's specs, while Elaine and Vivian fall asleep together.

The next morning, you wake up and go through another pile of paperwork. It seems you need to sign off on the Excalibur's evaluation so the RAF isn't held responsible for your untimely death in case of an accident. You can't help but wonder if you signed similar documents to absolve the RAF of any responsibility for your untimely death in case of BETA. It's been a while since you signed those papers and you weren't really paying attention.

You get changed along side Vivian. Elaine's in the main hangar, getting her Tornado ready.

"Do you need me to do anything specific," Vivian asks as she bends over to pull her suit up her legs. "For the evaluation, I mean."

"You need to be more subtle with the misunderstandings," you say. "It's no fun if it's too obvious. And no, just operate the council as you usually do. The tech team will feed the computer some simulations."

"Understood."

The two of you walk up to the Excalibur and settle into the cockpit. There's quite a bit more room than you're used to. Behind you, Vivian activates her console.

You relax and familiarize yourself with your own console while Vivian does her thing. The controls are all touch screen and it's integrated with your retinal HUD so that you can manipulate it using a completely virtual console if you want to customize the UI for combat. It's an impressive piece of work.

"Tacnet simulations successful," Vivian says. "Moving on to... cyberwarfare suite?"

"I added that in as an extra," you say. "The Excalibur has significantly more processing power than most TSFs, so I thought we should use it. The current cyberwarfare suite isn't much to look at, but it should prevent most malware and hostile intrusions. You should be able to operate it yourself."

"If you say so..."

That evaluation is quite simple. Mary tries to hack the Excalibur's systems from her console, while Vivian deals with the errors as they occur. You just sit back and watch.

Vivian's doing reasonably well, especially when you consider that Mary has direct access to the Excalibur's systems.

"We'll call the cyberwarfare suite evaluation a success," Mary says. "Move on to targeting assistance. Julian, we'll need your help for this one."

"Got it." You activate the main targeting systems and simulated targets appear in your HUD. "Ready when you are."

"I'm ready," Vivian says.

You'll start with the assault cannons and then switch to melee. You're using the Black Widow's weapon designs, which means your assault cannons come with a bayonet and you have a sword instead of the standard European battle axe, so this will take some getting used to.

Elaine's flying around the engagement zone, well within range of your radar, but she doesn't seem to have spotted you. That means the stealth systems are working. You really are piloting Europe's first true third generation TSF.

You circle around her and open fire with your assault cannon. It's a near miss, but it's enough to catch her attention. She rapidly turns around and the two of you dance in the air, shooting paintballs at each other. The base gets some new graffiti, but you fail to hit each other.

You run out of ammo and draw your swords, charging at Elaine, who draws her own battle axes. She strikes first, but you easily dodge her attack and slash her Tornado. Your sword's sheathed, so there's no damage, but it would have been a critical hit if you'd used the edge.

From that point on, you dominate the fight. Elaine's axes have more power to them and their attacks are slightly faster, but your swords have the better balance. Even when Elaine lands to deny you 3D movement, you easily evade her attacks and every one of your parries knocks her further off balance.

At long last, Mary calls an end to the evaluation.

"We can call this the Excalibur's victory," she says. "Congratulations, everyone. Europe now has the most advanced TSF in the world."
