You and Soul-of-Lightning are on the warpath. This is the first time when your traveling companion has been able to keep pace with you, and the two of you cover ground quickly. You head East, on the heels of the band of monsters that ravaged the village behind you, killed your friend, and are probably plotting to do something bad related to the pieces of Pazuzu.

You reach the point where the great river of Ea winds southward a bit as it heads west from the mountains. You see a farmstead that looks to be intact. That's good, but it might mean that the monsters didn't pass this way.

Soul-of-Lightning nudges you. "Are those grapes? Do they have wine? We should check to see if they have wine."

> "No time. We have to catch up to them."
> "Well... maybe the people there can give us information..."

If they're razing villages, an unrazed village means we might have lost the trail.

Ask them what they saw, and move on.

You skitter toward the farmhouse and lay down your burdens outside. Soul-of-Lightning veers toward the small patch of vines and takes a single grape to chew on. "Wait, that's a grape? I'd never had one fresh before. That's hardly like wine at all! And it's all crunchy inside."

A man with a short, shaggy beard answers the door. Somewhere behind him you hear a child crying and a woman's voice trying to comfort it. The man stays calm but keeps one hand near the shabby bronze knife at his belt. "I've heard of you. You're not one of them. You're one of ours. From Ligish. They haven't come 'round to collect tribute since my father's day. But a guest's a guest. By Enlil's laws, you are welcome here."

Soul-of-Lightning steps in, ducking under the doorway before you. "Yes, thank you! As you said, we're from Ligish. Not tax collectors, so to speak, but a little wine would certainly be appreciated. For the road. And it's a long road."

You follow him in. "Hey! Not too much! One skin; that's all. Now tell me, who are this "them" you're talking about? Have yo seen others like us?"

The man remains standing, welcoming but wary. "Aye, aye we have. Snake people in odd clothes, with these glowing balls that followed them around. They spoke hardly any of Ea's tongue, and they seemed to want something I couldn't understand. They ate and asked us who we were, where other humans were, a few other things I couldn't make out. Eventually they grew impatient and left. Good thing, too, or they'd have eaten more than we could spare. Are you here to chase them, then?"

> "Yes. They're scouts for some foreign power. We have to deal with them."
> "I'm looking for different monsters. Horse-men, like my friend. There's a lot of monsters roaming around these days. But I guess you haven't seen any other monsters."

"I'm looking for different monsters. Horse-men, like my friend. There's a lot of monsters roaming around these days. But I guess you haven't seen any other monsters."

"No, we haven't, Anu be praised." The man finally sits down. Soul-of-Lightning finds a wineskin and starts helping himself to it, making big loud exaggerated thirsty sounds.

"If you -see- a group of horse monsters led by a wasp and a lizard, RUN. They've been slaughtering villages. I didn't get to warn the last place."

The man looks concerned again. His gaze wanders toward the room where his wife and child are hiding. "This is no good. I thought this homestead would be out of the way of any wars. We're not between any great cities. Now I don't know what to do. Monsters! My father lived sixty years and never saw a monster. His father before him, I'm sure. What's a man to do about monsters?"

"Be thankful that some of them are on your side."

Soul-of-Lightning appears to have found a small cellar where wine is fermenting in urns.

Soul-of-Lightning snorts and tries squeezing into the cellar. "That winery was a lot bigger than this one."

You seize one of his hind legs in your claw, not hard enough to cause serious harm, but hard enough to show you mean business. "It's good that you remember. And did I tell you what wine did to my mother?"

He looks back with a guilty smile. "It made her happy for a while?"

"It killed her. It made an orphan of her child."

"Well... I weigh much more than a human. I can hold my drink better!" He kicks his leg.

After a brief struggle, you hold the centaur up over the floor in both claws. "Please excuse my friend, sir. We'll be going now. May the gods bless and keep you."

"And you as well..." The man heads back to the bedroom to tell his wife that the coast is clear.

You travel only by day and burrow into a cozy little hollow at night that's just for you. No centaurs allowed.

One night, you feel the pull of the underworld. Like last time, you feel like your presence there is weaker than usual. You see that many of the dead scorpions are occupying themselves by digging big long trenches into the brittle blue-and-black ground in patterns that you can't see from this altitude. Lady Amata is supervising, as usual. She is overjoyed to see that you've molted, and she gives you great big tight clawhugs, possibly to test your strength.

"What are the trenches for?"

"They're prayers. Ever since Humbaba went to sleep, my people have been restless, so I told them that making great big patterns in the ground might attract the favor of Ishtar. Now the smart ones are working out the geometry problems involved and the dumb ones are working on moving tons and tons of earth. It's easier to pass the time without fading when we have something big and pointless to do."

"You lied to them?"

"Well... I did say 'might.' And who's to say it won't?"

You nod and try to make out the colossal, half-finished shapes. "I was wondering. Could any of the scorpions hear help me learn blood magic? My venom changed when I molted, and now it doesn't kill people anymore. I want that ritual that will change it back."

"You need to talk to Gamelat, the pacifist. She gave you antivenom once. I don't agree with her on most things, but I must admit, she's helped keep us all together. She knows more about venoms and the old arts than even me."

You follow Lady Amata to a camp under a rock face where some scorpions have dug burrows. You hesitate to ask your next question. "Have you, um... seen any lions?"

"Hardly any animals here. They fade almost immediately. There's not much to them."

"This was a lion-person, I mean."

"Oh, you mean the shouters! A few have wandered into our territory over the years. None lately. They're quite the pests. They always used to fight with us over hunting grounds, and they have this funny way of making humans do what they want. Why do you ask?"

"No reason..."

"All right. Well, here we are."

Gamelat greets you graciously. "Welcome, living one! How can I help you in your journey?"

"Hello. I'm learning blood magic, and I'd like to know the ritual that lets me adopt someone else's venom."

"Our venom still runs true, but our blood is no longer good for magic. So I'll have to recite this one from memory and hope I'm getting it right. It's funny. On the whole, we remember life well, but doubt still creeps in and makes us question whether we remember it right. But forgive me for rambling, living one. We have work to do..."

She teaches you a prayer in an ancient, inhuman tongue only slightly related to your native one. You repeat after her and hope you remember the sounds correctly. "The words are evil, but the effect is good," she says. "Tiamat gave us the words. We were her second attempt at making creatures that could kill her enemies. Her first attempt was to make monsters that killed out of duty, who did exactly as they were told. They lacked a certain energy. So she made us to kill out of love and thrill in the hunt. We also were not to her satisfaction, so she tried something else. But that's another story..."

You feel yourself pulled back up toward the waking world by Soul-of-Lightning. He's spotted a caravan of snake-people.

You brush the dirt out of your hair and approach the snake people with your hands and claws out. "Hello! I, uh... Can you understand me? I come in peace!"

They look very angry with you. One of them points at you and Soul-of-Lightning, and all the fireballs floating around the small party of snake-people crackle and spin and shine more brightly. And fortunately, once the fireballs stop, they don't start up again. You're lucky that the snake-people didn't start a giant brushfire. The snake-people talk amongst themselves in their own tongue, then they go toward Soul-of-Lightning in particular and check him for weapons.

"Wanting is fine as long as you keep your grubby hands to yourself. Go on now, before I get all choked up." You give him a little wink. Maybe forgiving him is important. Maybe your mother went over the edge and got herself killed because nobody would ever forgive her for the stupid things she did while drunk.

Soul-of-Lightning nods and trots away, which seems to satisfy the snake-people. Sure enough, they start leading you back eastward. They make you stay in the middle of their small formation, with guards to the front and rear of you. They consider taking your nice spear that you got from Ishtar, but your obvious attachment to it makes them satisfied that you're simply stowing it with the things on your back.

The party moves mostly around dawn and dusk, sleeping at night and resting and basking in the hottest hours of the day. Are you a prisoner? You suppose you are. You try you best to learn about your captors, keenly aware of the fireballs that they keep around themselves constantly and never put away. Even as they sleep, the fireballs remain as faint, drifting points of light. You wonder how strong they are. You're not completely certain you could kill them all if you had to.

The petite one is the most talkative with you - the others mostly give you one-word orders or confer with the big male with the gray streak in his hair. During your daytime breaks from the long road to the mountain pass, you try teaching each other your respective languages. You gather that her name is Jaya and people are called naga - except that the females aren't nagas; they're naginis. They're exploring the land under orders from someone - maybe a god, or a king, or both. Definitely a male. You try to convey that your mission is to catch the bad centaurs that went this way. She just opens her hands and bows her head, her gesture for agreement. She may not have understood entirely and just wanted to be polite.

One midday, as the two of you are comparing your respective number systems, you find a good excuse to touch her with your white glove while the two of you are counting on your fingers. You don't learn anything special about her language, but you see a brief vision of an important moment of her life. You see through her closed eyes and feel her body - but it's a human body. She's kneeling in something cold and wet, and she's saying something in her own tongue. She feels something hot materialize right in front of her, and her lower body starts changing.

You keep your information to yourself and don't try messing with any of the other nagas. Jaya notices when you touch her, and she smiles back at you knowingly. Or maybe she's just being polite.

You enter that mountain pass, and you see the rubble that remains after your battle with the maggot king. You pause for a moment to pay your respects. For a giant murderous maggot, he wasn't that bad a guy.

That night, you successfully teach Jaya your words for "human" and "centaur" by leaning your human half down close to the ground and making two walky fingers and four walky fingers, respectively. "Do you know other centaurs? Did centaurs come this way?" You point to the east end of the pass in the distance.

"Yes," Jaya says.

"They are bad! I come for them!" You make a snippy gesture with one claw.

"They say you are bad. They say bad brothers..." You teach her the word for "follow." "They say bad brothers follow them. They explore, as we explore too. They want see strong ones. Strong naga, strong men." She leans in close and makes sure her kin aren't listening. "Is you bad, like the bad centaurs? You with them? Tell I. I will not tell I's brothers. I make you safe."

"I and the centaur I'm with are good! Those other centaurs are bad! They kill people! Kill! You understand kill?" You stab your claw in the dirt. "They kill humans. They kill whole human villages. They killed my friend."

Jaya seems to understand and take you seriously. "That bad. We will making them not kill so. We king will hearing them because only they will talk to king, I think. We must growing. We must moving. We will must being safe, because bad time will coming."

You hear the nagas raise the alarm. Another group is coming up the pass. You take a look. There's a few centaurs, five red giants... and a human girl.

You skitter toward the head naga, who looks justifiably distracted. "Excuse me? May I fight? I don't want to alarm you, but I could help with this..."

The head naga shooes you away and launches his fireball at the group coming in from the West. The others join in launching a volley. Soon three of the centaurs are injured, on fire even as they keep charging at you with spears and axes. The nagas give ground so they have time to launch another volley. With no more time to debate, you join the battle with your bare claws!

You've spent so many days dwelling on your hatred for the lizard-man, you'd almost forgotten about your hatred for Ku-Aya. She betrayed your trust. You could have been pals. Instead she killed people in the pyramid and robbed from Blood Dad. There was also that time at Turtak when she killed unarmed people in their camps. Fuck Ku-Aya.

The centaurs want to converge on you, but you don't have time for that. You impale one on your claws and use him to shove the others aside. Then you run for the human girl and prepare to weave through the loose squad of red giants. They're slow, but they take up a lot of space.

Compared to the red giants, you're quite speedy. You even kick up some dust as you run. You've come a long way since those first days when you could barely walk.

You pick the giant that looks biggest and slowest. It's smaller than Patience, but still a solid fifteen feet tall. It stops in its tracks when it sees you coming at it, preparing to swat you away with its great cudgel. You laugh at great cudgels.

You duck and wave with your human half even as your scorpion half continues at full tilt. When it starts to swing, you dart within its reach, grab its hands with your claws, and squeeze. You feel things break. You keep your momentum going as you run up its body, digging your eight legs into its flesh again and again. To pull yourself up onto its shoulders, you sink a claw deep into the crook of its neck. It's barely had time to scream as you leap off of its shoulders.

You reach Ku-Aya at the very rear of her group of monsters. She's walking leisurely toward you. The other giants are slowly turning around to catch you, but for a moment it's just you and her.

"Hello, Hunzuu," she says. "I hear you wouldn't let Iltani come with us. We wouldn't have harmed her. If she could have seen what's coming, she'd have begged to come with us."

"You killed Ninlil!"
"No, I didn't. If I had killed her, she'd have never seen it coming."

You strike with both claws and stinger at once, hissing like a nightmare. Ku-Aya casually sidesteps your attacks as she draws a long knife of shiny bronze. She's fast, maybe even faster than Iltani was in your battle with her.

Though it's hard to connect with her, you keep up with her as she gives ground. You do not dishonor yourself. As weapons clash and fireballs burst behind you, you anticipate her next dodge and bring your claw to meet her. You knock her to the ground, and when she kips up again you see a big bloody scrape across her face where she dragged across the earth. She looks angry. You've never seen her angry. "You shouldn't kill me."

"Why not?! You think I'm afraid of Pazuzu?"

"Not that." She leaps at you, but you manage to swat her away again.

"Then why?!"

"Because I know who your father is."
