The darkness begins to slip away and you feel yourself returning to consciousness. Your vision is still a blur, the obnoxious lights above you doing little to help. Your whole body feels like it's been put through the ringer and then some, but that begs the question: why?

Nearby you can hear the slow but steady beep of a heart monitor, increasing ever so slightly as your senses return to you. Along with it, the heavy smell of antibiotics assaults your senses and with a muffled grunt you remember little, but one thing is a distinct hatred of hospitals.

The urge to rise up almost surfaces before the light is blocked by a figure that looms over you. Their face is hidden, cascaded in shadows beneath their hood, which the light nearly casting a halo over their head. Whoever they are, the white and red robes give some hint.

"Well, well." A female voice says, amusement clear. "Back amongst the living, are we?"

With nothing having yet jumped out and attempted to either shoot, stab, or eat you, you don't see too much of a reason to panic. Whatever's currently in your system is probably helping with that.

Looking up at the figure, you swallow a few times before managing to get your voice working again.

"You tell me, doc." You say, attempting to lean up. A helping hand keeps you steady and before long you're sitting up on the medical bed you find yourself in. Your vision almost cleared, you shake your head and look at the woman next to you.

"It's bad, isn't it?"

Underneath the hood, white teeth contrasts against dark skin as a young woman grins at you. Curious green eyes look you over, her head cocking to the side as she studies you. Suddenly, you feel more like a broken down chimera than a person.

"Oh, please." She chuckles, waving a dismissive hand. "If I were in your position I'd be thrilled. Life as a servitor isn't so bad. So I've heard, at least."

And just like that, you're proven once again that complacency only leads to trouble. Hearing the sudden spike in beeps, your hand shoots for your laspistol... only to find it not there. Or your armor, for that matter. Instead, a horribly pale green hospital gown is in its place. Now that you think about it, maybe that's an upgrade.

"Come again?" you demand, using your only offensive weapon: scowling. "That's bullshit of the highest degree! I've done nothing to deserve this!"

"Quite right." The woman nods solemnly. "That's why I'm frakking with you."

You stare, gaping for a few moments before the woman breaks down into childish snickering. Behind her, a third mechanical appendage sprouting from her shoulder grips the bed for support.

"You're face! Oh, that was rich." She says, straightening once more and trying to look professional once more. And failing. Horribly. "Sorry about that. Thought a little humor might help."

The urge to find your weapon again returns as your eyebrow twitches in annoyance.

"Yeah. Real funny, doc. I'm dying." You say, in no mood for this crazy woman's attempt at humor. Seeing your demeanor quickly sour, she offers you a sheepish smile and coughs into her hand. Taking a breath, you take a look around you. This place is obviously meant to house a crowd, but you two are the only ones, minus a few dormant medicae servitors nearby.

"Where am I?" You ask.

"The medbay of the Antebellum," she answers, as if you're supposed to already know. "you've been out of it for nearly a week now. Been feeding you through a straw and waiting to see if you'd pull through."

Having returned to a semi-serious manner, the woman begins to pace back and forth as she starts to rant.

"Oh, believe me, I was all for turning you into a servitor. We always need more of the buggers; damn things always seem to break down so fast. That, and we could use the spare parts. But NO, that's not what she has planned, and no one gets to have a say once the 'plan' is set...'

As she continues to talk the mechadendrite behind her lowers down and almost seems to cower behind her like a child watching their parents have an argument. Only in this case it's utterly one-sided. You look around for someplace to make a run for it, but the only exit you see is behind her and you're not sure if your legs could carry you.

"When a hellgun's acting up and they need mommy to fix it, who do they come to? Me! Someone has a whittle scratch on their big bad carapace? I beat it back into place! And it likes it! But no one ever asks me what I think when we're heading off to Throne knows where! I mean, I rarely ever go with the ground teams, and they tend to bring me back all sorts of stuff to take apart..."

She paused, frowning and looking as if she'd just kicked a baby grox. Then she turns on you with big, worried eyes.

"I'm horrible, aren't I?" She asks, rubbing her hands together anxiously. Somehow you've witnessed a one argument be lost and won at the same time. "I mean, I know we're all cogs and we've all got our parts. You know what that's like, right? My job is to fix things and you're job is to... um... die heroically?"

Behind her, the doors leading into the medbay whirred, sliding open with a quiet hiss. Walking through is a redheaded woman, slightly taller than the techpriest and looking much more composed. The plain black fatigues she wears gives no hint to who or what she is, though she watches the techpriest with bemused interest. As she notices you're awake, however, she gives you a smile that makes your stomach sink.

(Sorry, gents. Fuck you grammar)

You had a bad feeling as soon as the woman entered, and it only gets worse as she grows closer. Even so, you steel your resolve and prepare for the worst. Besides, you're still a Guardsman for the moment. No one can say you were ever otherwise.

Straightening as best you can, you give a curt nod to the woman as she stops just short of the techpriest. Though you told yourself you were not in the mood, you feel a familiar sense of sarcasm taking hold.

"Ma'am." You say. "I'd like to file a formal complaint."

"Oh?" The woman finally speaks, arching a brow and causing the techpriest to nearly jump to the ceiling. "And what would that be, Sergeant?"

"You're Techpriest is a jerk, and her bedside manners are horrible." You say with a straight face.

"Hey!" The woman in question glares at you, as if this was some new revelation. Her companion, however, merely smiles a slightly more friendlier version of the one from before, a chuckle escaping from her lips as she looks you over.

"I'm glad to see your sense of humor is intact." The new woman says.

"So it seems." You agree hesitantly. "I suppose a debriefing is in order?"

"If you're feeling up to it." She nods. "Let's start from the beginning. What's the last thing you remember?"

You close your eyes and take a breath. After a few moments of concentration things begin to resurface. Fragments, mostly, but enough to give an idea of who you were.

A fortress-city, vaguely familiar. A figure, too distorted to recognize, slaps you on the back as you both watch a sunset.

Children dressed in flak armor running drills, with a drill sergeant dogging them the whole way. A sense of fatigue, but also pride.

Various fights, from urban streets to jungles to deserts. Too many to count.

And then...

Faces you know but can't name appear. All of them laughing, smiling at you. Then, they stop laughing. Their expression darken and suddenly they're glaring. One screams, blood erupting from her mouth. The others follow suit, screaming, calling out for help. Your help. Begging. Then they're coming for you now. Millions of them. Jaws open, waiting, drawing closer and-

A hand grabs you by the shoulder and your eyes shoot open. Something resembling worry is etched onto the redhead's face, the distance between you slackened considerably. Even the techpriest is looking on in a mix of confusion and uncertainty. It's only then you hear the rapidly beeping heart monitor, matching the hammering in your chest and your rapid breathing.

"Words, Sergeant." She urges, not unkindly. "Use them."

"Mi..." You falter for a moment, waiting for the room to stop spinning before you continue. "M-Michael Dunkin. 291st... Cadian Shocktroopers. Dispatched to... to..."

"Don't push yourself." The redhead says. "If you want, I can fill in the rest."

"No." You said, shaking you head stubbornly. "I remember this. I have to."

The more you think back, the more bits and pieces continue to fall into place. After a minute of silent recollection you start again. At times you have to stop and start, both from a lack of certainty and the pain the memories bring.

"We were deployed to Tadirra... II? No, III. To help the local PDF put down a revolt. Nothing major, right? We didn't even understand why we were being sent there." You continue. "Go in, enforce the peace, then move on. That... was the plan, at least."

"But things went everywhere but." The redhead said, getting a nod from you.

"Give me cultists, give me orks; hell, give me traitor astartes. That I can handle. But no, the Emperor wasn't feeling very generous that day. One minute we're mopping up the last few pockets of resistance, and then..."

Another image. Giant masses, what might pass as a ship by 'their' standards, hovering overhead. Spores rained down from the sky in the thousands.

"Tyrannids." You finally say. "Too many to count."

"That's usually how it is." The redhead remarks with a sympathetic smile.

"And damn did they make it known." You chuckle, though there's no humor to it. "Us, the PDF, even the rebels not infected put up one hell of a fight. We gave as good as we got... and it wasn't enough. We lost the planet, didn't we, Ma'am?"

She nods and you feel a familiar weight set into your gut. It's the feeling of losing. Not just a battle or a war, but friends as well. As you talk, things continue to crystallize until you can almost smell the smoke again, hear the screams, but you shrug the feeling off and trudge on.

"There was barely a half-dozen of us left in the platoon by the time came for us to book it off planet. Only we didn't leave. The spaceport was being overrun, and we were trying to find anything with wings to get us out. And then..."

"...you ran into us." The redhead finishes.

Wait, that's not right. You remember leading the others through the spaceport, and then ran into... oh.

"That was you?" You ask, more than a little surprised, and getting a nod in response.

"Keep going." She says.

"We made it into this hangar where a firefight going on. Two men, an astartes, and a whole mess of 'Nids. Only it wasn't an astartes, was it?"

The thing that had been wrestling the Lictor had been a sight to behold; red, gold, and black armor covered in ichor and struggling to keep the thing's claws from eviscerating it or one of it's companions. Judging by the state of the floor, she hadn't been so luck with some.

"So we came in and started drawing some of them off you." You say, and then you fight the urge to scowl. "And as a reward we got butchered."

"You and your men gave us the time we needed to get the transport going." The Redhead explains. "For their sacrifice, I'm grateful."

"I'm sure you are." You snap before you can stop yourself, but she lets it go. Looking away, things start to fog again.

"The last thing I remember is seeing the Lictor about ready to open your suit like a tin can. It reared back and I..."

"Saved my life, yes." The Redhead smiles again, a bit more earnestly than the last. Then, just as quickly, it fades. "Quite the marksmen, to make a shot like that. After which you were stabbed through the back by one of the lesser creatures. You would have been torn apart as well, but I thought I'd return the favor before we left."

She says this like she might actually mean it, but it's a hard pill to swallow now that you know everything.

You want to be angry. For yourself, and for the others. But that would be stupid, and you haven't gotten this far by being stupid. Allowing yourself a deep breath, you look back at the woman with a resigned expression.

"I guess a 'thank you' is in order." You say, trying and failing to keep the dryness out of your tone. Even so, you press on to more important subjects. "So... where does this leave us?"

"I was hoping you would ask that." The Redhead smiles that same unnerving smile again and sits at the foot of your bed. From her side she pulls out a dataslates and presses a few keys into it. You can't see from here what it is, but the techpriest, who for a while now has been watching on with complete attention on you, edges over to look over the woman's shoulder.

"We've got several things to go over, so let's start with something fun." She suggests cheerfully, signaling to the air around her. "You've gotten most of your faculties back by now, I'd wager. I doubt she's expecting us to really be thankful at this moment, we essentially saved her twice by buying her time (at the cost of our men) and singlehandedly saving her (at the cost of nearly dying).

Probably best to just be as neutral and professional for now and leave it at that.

Or maybe a high-ranking Arbite of some kind. I guess if I really wanted to go out on a limb I could say Rogue Trader, but you don't seem quite... gaudy? enough for that and I can't imagine what profit could've been found in the middle of that mess."

>>31918650

You take a quick look at her once more, and by then you've got a fairly clear idea. You've, at least up until now, never seen or met one face to face before, and it's shocking to say the least. Not quite what you were expecting, but that may be a good thing. With your answer in mind, you answer in earnest.

"I can think of a few choices." You say. "None of them very pleasant. I don't think this is Navy, but you're well stocked, so Rogue Trader would be a safe bet."

"But?" The Redhead asks.

"But no Rogue Trader in his right mind would have a set of armor looking like that. Nor be able to get their hands on that type of hardware; easily, at least. Finally, a Rogue Trader wouldn't be able to offer a debriefing or, more likely, know what a debriefing even is. Do I have to say it?"

"You do."

"Inquisitor."

"Lady Inquisitor." The Techpriest corrects with a huff.

"Very good." The Redhead gives a pleased smile "Ordos?"

"Xe...nos?" You begin, unsure if this is some sort of trick. When all she does it nod again you relax, but just like that she's back to the dataslate.

"Now you have two options. I can either skip over what's said about you and your men and move onto a solution to your current problem."

"Or?"

"Or I can tell you how you died."

Does she really have to smile when she says stuff like that?

(Sorry about that, gents. Went to grab a bite to eat)

"Well when you put it like that I might as well. Might make for a good drinking story."

"Splendid." Redhead smiles before handing the dataslate to her companion. "Melodi, be a dear for me."

Acting like a puppy given a treat, 'Melodi' takes the offered item and dramatically clears her throat. Taking the dataslate in her mechadendrite, her hands are free to make all sorts of odd and unneeded hand gestures. As she reads, you can't help but get the feeling she's using a bit too many theatrics.

"Incident #23562C: The Last Stand of Second Platoon. Oooh, ominous. Assigned with defending the northwestern quarter of the starport of the capitol Traxis, the remains of first company manned the position for four days without falter or complaint. Although their will was strong and their faith stronger, both ammunition and bodies slowly but steadily grew smaller until eventually a breach was made by the killer hordes besieging them! With hundreds of civilians still trailing behind the evacuation, however, first company and the rest of the 291st refused to falter or break.

Being the last surviving officer in his unit- having been brevetted to lieutenant at the death of his predecessor- lieutenant Dunkin lead the retreat of his section admirably, not allowing the xenos an inch without watering it in their own blood. Sadly, it wasn't long before no more than a few dozen remained. With transport and safety now in sight, the survivors made a choice. Allowing more civilians the chance to live another day, the surviving members of first company, now little more than stragglers attached to second platoon, refused to leave their post."

(Cont.)
>>
>>31919853

"The last known contact with lieutenant Dunkin was of him issuing new orders to his men, refusing to give the approaching xenos the pleasure of seeing them finally break. Lieutenant Dunkin and all of first company are presumed dead, and are all posthumously suggested for the Ward of Cadia."

Though she started out excited and intrigued, she ends with a sober tone and expression you hadn't seen on her before. Even after snapping at her before, you don't exactly get any sort of enjoyment out of seeing her deflate like that.

"I made officer?" You asked, feigning horror. "That's a fate worse than death."

Melodi cracks a smile at that, handing the dataslate back without a fuss. Seemingly starting off where she left off, the Inquisitor continues.

"Some would say." Redhead nods in agreement. "So I take it you approve?"

"I've read worse from dime novels."

"Good. Ah, before we continue." She says, as if something just now occurred to her. "Lady Inquisitor Christina Massey, Ordos Xenos, at your service."

"I have a feeling it's the opposite." You reply, much to her amusement.

"Perhaps, perhaps." She nods. "I've brought you aboard my ship, given you medical treatment far outside the scope of Guard standards, and refrained from tying you down in an interrogation room. I do suppose that means I want something, doesn't it?"

Before you can reply she goes on, pocketing the dataslate and focusing completely on you.

"We both know your old life is behind you now. For all intents and purposes you're a dead hero, and that's how your people will remember you. Now, I'm offering you something different. A bit more of your time before you pass on. Join my little band, serve the Emperor as I do, and see a lot more good done before either of us see the grave. I need a new bodyguard, and you need a new life. I'd say we make a suit, don't you agree?"

"Oh, please." Melodi scoffs, now back to her old self. "Like we'd like you near anything resembling 'fancy.'"

"I hate to say it, but I'm afraid she's right." Christina nods. "You'll have to prove yourself before we go trusting you with the fun toys. I suppose you'll have to just settle for carapace and a hellgun, for now."

"That all?" You ask, already feeling your odds of survival rising. Then a question rises. "Wait. I'm dead. Does this mean I get a new name?"

Whatever the Inquisitor was to say next, you seem to have taken her rather off guard. She regards you with a curious expression while Melodi simply looks confused.

"We're not quite like the holovids." Christina says. "New names typically only come with undercover missions, and most of us tend to rely on first names only. That is... of course... unless you feel the need to change your name? I can promise you that you're probably not the only Michael Dunkin to die today. Humans have a severe lack of creativity."

Would starting over completely fix things? If you took a new name, a new identity, would that means you'd lose your old demons? Would anyone even care?
>No, I suppose not.

After everything that's happened, a change of name would probably do little, if anything, to help. No. After all that, your name is the only thing you really have left.

"No, I suppose not." You admit.

With that Christina stands up from the bed, craning her neck to and fro before turn to face you again.

"I take it you're now acquainted with Miss Coyle?" she asks.

"I suppose so." You shrug.

"Miss Coyle?" Melodi shudders. "You make me sound like an old lady. Call me Fritz. It's what everyone else does."

"As you may have guessed, she's a bit of a combined package. Part engineer, part medic, she looks after the health of everyone and everything." Christina explains, ignoring the remark with a sideways glance. "She knows the inside of most machines as well as she knows the human body."

"Metal, flesh, we've all got bits that tick." Melodi says, trying to act bashful. "They all have their use."

"Just so." Christina nods in agreement. "That's one of my people, but it takes more than one to skin a grox. Think you can manage a walk, let me introduce you to the other people you'll be working with?"

>Answer?

>>31921569
>I assume she wants us as a replacement bodyguard, but then why would she withhold the good toys from us?

She already said why, we need to prove ourselves. The fun toys don't come cheap, and as it is, we're getting "just" carapace and a hellgun, which already upgrades us.

Hell, I wouldn't give us fun toys until we do something kickass and show we aren't morons.
>>
>>31921395

"If she says I'm good to go, yeah, I can manage it." You say, looking to the medical enginseer. Suddenly becoming the focus of the conversation she tenses a moment before nodding furiously.

"Right, right! Yeah! The last of your torn bits mended yesterday. Just don't go doing anything crazy and you'll be fine."

"I'm sure I can manage. Besides, I'd rather not risk you taking me apart in my sleep if I stayed." You answer, though the teasing seemed to have gone over her head.

"Hey!" She scowled, crossing her arms and giving a huff. "I'm under strict orders to leave your squishy bits alone! And I have NOT taken anyone apart in their asleep... recently."

With that unwanted revelation, you throw the blanket off of you and-

-stare in shock at your right leg. What? When did tha-

Oh, right. Ork mortar round. Sindar. Saving... Maus...

"Michael?" Melodi brings you out of your musings as she anxiously watches on. "I didn't mess anything up, did I?"

If anything, you got an upgrade. Before, everything below the knee was a shoddy hunk of ugly green cybernetics that only worked half the time and hurt like a frakker when in water. Now, in its place was a slim, smooth, and almost lifelike version of the real thing; jet black and trimmed with gold. A few testing movements shows that, as you suspected, it's as fluid as can be.

Even so, Melodi watches on as she tries, and fails, to hide her anxiety as she awaits your answer. Christina, meanwhile, merely watches on in mind amusement.

Your eyes go wide at this new revelation, and you turn to face Melodi with a look of astonishment. Then, after just long enough time for her to start squirming, you smile.

"A new leg!" You say, happy enough to sound like you might hug the thing. "Just what I wanted for Candlemass!"

For a moment Melodi seems conflicted, uncertain if this is a joke, then decides to accept it at face value and beams.

"Yeah, well." She scoffs. "It was nothing, really."

"I don't know how much I may or may not be getting paid, but getting you something nice is now officially a standing goal." You promise her, much to the surprise of both women.

"My, my." Christina chuckles. "Glad you're already thinking about spending my money."

"W-What? Like... a gift? Well, I mean, you don't HAVE to..." Melodi trails off, though the smile fails to fall from her face at the prospect.

With your spirits lifted by the sudden turn to a more cheerful atmosphere, you swing your legs over the bed and begin to cautiously get to your feet.

(I hope I get to say this often. I love you guys so much.)

You first start with your actual leg, feeling the cold flooring beneath you with a sense of determination. With renewed vigor you move quickly to steady your new leg and right yourself.

Maybe a bit too quickly.

Your robotic leg slides across the ground before you can steady yourself. Like the first time you had grav chute training (which, for some reason, had yet to resurface until now) the ground rushes up to meet you and you prepare for impact.

*WHACK*

With a groan you land face-first on the floor, followed quickly by two feminine cries of dismay.

"Sergeant!"

"Michael!"

"...fffffrakking..."

Before you can push yourself up you feel yourself being lifted upward, and with a bit of effort you find yourself being helped back to your feet by Meloni's mechadendrite. As Christina lends a fleshier hand the appendage retracts to hide behind it's owner once more.

"You're off to a flying start, Sergeant." Christina smirks, not even trying to hide her amusement at your expense. "You just need to work on your landing."

"Are you alright?!" Meloni asks. "Don't worry! I can handle broken bones, bruises, possessions, cuts, and gunshot wounds just fine!"

"Uh... yeah. Right." Melodi nods, having slightly calmed down.

"If both of you are quite through." Christina prompts, tapping her foot, though she seems to be enjoying the show just fine. "I believe we were doing something productive?"

"Yes, Ma'am." You reply, following the Inquisitors gaze as she signals to another nearby bed. Laying on it is a folded set of fatigues much like hers, along with a pair of boots sitting at the foot of it.

"I thought you might like something with a bit less of a draft. We'll give you some privacy while you dress, at least." Christina says as she waves Melodi over. Together, they turn their backs to you, but not before the Inquisitor looks over her shoulder one last time. "If you need us, just flail around on the floor to get our attention."

"Flailing on the floor means 'Send help'; Flailing against the wall means 'You can look now'." You tell them.

Melodi lets out a laugh while Christina only rolls her eyes. As much as you'd like to try and hear what they're saying about you, you haven't exactly made the best impression. Having been a fan of the 'hurry up and wait' technique for quite some time you're change within two minutes.

"I'm done flailing." You call to them, and as you approach they both turn back to you.

"Now maybe we can get somewhere." Christina sighs. "Will you be joining us, Melodi?"

"Ah, sparks." The techpriest sighs. "I'd love to, but my babies are calling. No one else is gonna look after them, so it's up to me. Here's hoping you stick around long enough to get me that present, Michael."

"Makes two of us." You reply, and with that you two bid your farewell.

"At least you two get along." Christina remarks, and despite yourself you get a new uneasy feeling. "Follow me, Sergeant, and do watch your step. Some of the others aren't quite as friendly as Miss Coyle."

Both of you start down the ornate hallways of the ship, all sorts of various paintings and tapestries lining them. Occasionally you pass a mob of crewman or, judging from the armor and weaponry, security patrols, but they either nod respectfully or simple steer clear of the two of you.

"I'm sure you have plenty of questions." Christina offers as you board an elevator. "Lucky for you, I'm rather good at giving answers."

With a lurch the elevator starts upwards, a faint but annoying chime playing in the background.

As the silence begins to drag on something seems to click and you turn to the Inquisitor.

"When you brought me in," You begin. "did I have anything on me? A picture, anything?"

She pauses at the question, either having not considered the question or hoping it wouldn't come up. After what seemed like a brief moment of internal conflict she reached into a pouch at her waist and bring out a small pict and hands it to you.

"You had a few mementos when you came in, yes." She says. "I had most taken to your room, but I wasn't so sure about this one. I considered ridding it for you."

It's an old, worn thing, slightly faded by time. The faces, however, are still there. Familiar faces, much younger from your Whiteshield days, all grinning and piled together with over half of them giving the other grox ears. The only thing breaking the happy mood captured was the red X that marked most of their faces. By now, there are only four not crossed.

There's you, Cyrus, Maus, and...

With a flash you're back on the rooftop, watching the sun set over Kasr Dromuss. Daniel's sitting beside you, grinning like the perfect big brother. The last you knew he was a Kasrkin, deployed deep into 'Nid territory...

"Do you want to know?" She asks, breaking your attention away from the object. "About whether or not your brother is...?"

>No. I don't.
>At least tell me he went down swinging.

"I'm already dead, might as well get the rest of my downers over with so the only way left for me is up."
>>
>>31923758
"Nah I know he's gone, he told me he wasn't coming back when he jumped on the valk, did you find a small necklace with some teeth, a bolt round and a ring on it? He gave it to me before he left, only thing he owned."

Just like that you're back where you started; alone. You try to think otherwise, but you know the answer before you even speak.

"If I know Dan, he bit it on top of a mountain of 'Nids." You say.

"I can one-up that." Christina smiles. "He's alive."

At first you don't respond, waiting for some sort of sick joke to spring up. When you get nothing, however, your brow furrows in confusion.

"How...?"

"He was one of the last ones off-planet. Three guesses why, and the first two don't count. From what the rumors are, he was forcibly removed by his comrades."

Which basically meant that he was brought aboard a transport with a black eye and a lack of consciousness. Somehow, you find yourself smiling at the image.

"I'm sorry I can't say the same for your unit." She continues. "Estimates for casualties for our forces are at 90%. And that's being generous."

>Anything else?
>>
>>31923936
Cant we recruit him? He'd make a hell of a body guard by our side.

"10 percent is better than nothing, and if the others faired half as well as we did the 'nids paid their due for that world."

A small spark of hope begins to build.

"That motherfucker always knew how to get me worked up. Does this mean you recruited him too?" You ask.

"Unfortunately not. He and I never crossed paths, though he sounds like quite the fellow." She shakes her head. "Besides, I think he'll be needed where he already is."

And just like that, it's extinguished. Still, the fact that he's alive leaves you feeling relieved.

"So where will WE be needed?" You question her, and a familiar, but wholly unwanted, smile returns.

"You might not think it, but our time with Tadirra III is done. Now we're heading someplace new, but you'll learn about that soon enough. For now, we're getting you settled in."

The elevator doors open with a chime, and a short walk later leads you into a small but expensive looking temple. Solid gold replicas of the Emperor and other Imperial hero's line the walls, the former being the largest and standing tall behind the pulpit. Kneeling at the alter is a man dressed in the robes of the Ecclesiarchy, his head bowed in prayer.

"Our next member." Christina explains in a hushed whisper. "Father Mikel is a good man, and good at his job. Just don't get on his bad side."

You were never much for church back on Cadia, and even less so as your career as a soldier progressed. Eventually, after everything you've seen, you've all but given up on faith, deciding more on soldiering. Along with Christina you wait patiently at the man goes through his prayers.

After several minutes he seems to have reached an end, standing and turning to face you. He's obviously a man on in his ears, his scalp sporting various religious tattoos in place of hair, but he holds himself like any proper guardsman all the same.

When he sees the two of you, specifically you, he gives a gentle smile and nods his head in greetings.

"Another sheep for the flock." He says in the tone of a grandfather. "Welcome, my son."

Aaaaand I think we'll stop it here. We're not QUITE at 300 posts, I know, but this is my first quest and I was hoping for a quick round of feedback before I called it a night. I'll try and shoot for the 300 marks from now on, but I can't make promises.

So, anons, how'd I do for a first-timer? Pros? Cons? I can't get better unless someone tells me something other than 'get gud, scrub.'

On a related note, would someone be willing to archive this, or at least tell me how to do it myself? My newfag is showing, I know, but I'm learning.

Pretty good job, especially for a first time. You gonna get a twitter?

Your updates are pretty fast with good amount of content. Although pacing seems a tad slow but its also only the first thread.
>>
>>31924432

Many thanks, friend. I'll shoot for tomorrow night, but I may have plans (forced on me) that say otherwise. At least two threads before next weekend. That's probably gonna bite me in the ass later, I know, but ah well.

>>31924434

Gee, thanks. I... think.

>>31924441

That's the one. That's where I always go to reread or catch up on quests, so I assumed that was 'the spot.' Thanks for the help.

>>31924475

I'll get a twitter up soon, though I'm not sure how well that'll turn out. I agree it's been slow, but as you said this is the beginning. A bit more meet and greet and soon we'll get into the Fun stuff.
>>
>>31924544
Yeah, no problem I'm enjoying it. We did have fun talking to people at the start before we did anything so its not your fault.

Just hoping it doesn't take 5 threads to meet everyone heh.
>>
>>31924544
That was fun thanks I just got into role playing and haven't found a good starting point. (I can't find anyone willing to play/willing to take a complete beginner) This will be helpful (I think) while I'm learning how role playing works.
