You are Flying officer Julian Reber of the Royal Air Force. You joined the RAF to fight the BETA, aliens who swarm over much of Europe and who threaten to exterminate humanity. Your latest task is to develop a new prototype Tactical Surface Fighter which should, if successful, significantly increase humanity's odds of winning the war. You're currently reviewing your progress report with Group captain Hall, your commanding officer.

"So far, it looks like a significant upgrade to the Typhoon," you say. "Its effectiveness at range isn't as good, but that's mostly a question of piloting. The frame's designed for knife fighting, so it doesn't switch weapons as other TSFs. At range or on approach, it's not as much of a problem."

Hall nods as he flips through your performance reports. So far, the YEF-19 Excalibur has come out ahead of the EF-2000 Typhoon in all its evaluations, even when Mary used your Typhoon flight records as a baseline. The advantage isn't overwhelming, but you don't expect any miracles. You've been able to push the Excalibur's performance quite far, but there's only so much you can do before the laws of physics push back.

>(cont.)
>>

"Any hopes for mass production?"

"Not at this point." You shake your head. "Considering our immediate needs, combat doctrine and the production schedule of the Typhoon, it wouldn't be worth the effort. Right now, the Excalibur's most significant advantage over the Typhoon is its stealth, which isn't going to do anything against the BETA."

"That's what I suspected," Hall says. "In any case, you've done excellent work. We're on a tight schedule, but live combat evaluations can wait until next year. In the meantime..."

Hall takes out a small card and hands it to you.

"It seems you're going on a vacation for the holidays. I've already filed all the paperwork. You can take the day off as well."

You turn the card over and read what it says.

'PARKING LOT C. TODAY. 11:45PM. URGENT. - M'

"Thank you, sir," you say as you salute and take your leave of Hall.

Looks like MI5 has another job for you. It's a good thing you didn't have any special plans for Christmas. At least you got a day off out of it and the morning's still young.

You decide to see Mary. You couldn't see her when you were in Italy and you've been focused on the Excalibur since your return. If you're going to be sent off on some errand again, you should spend some time with her first.

You find Mary in the base's main hangar. Looks like she's just finished organizing the weekly maintenance schedule on her on the hangar's blackboard.

"Good morning," you call out to her.

"Good morning, Julian," she says. "If you're here for one more evaluation before your next extracurricular assignment, I'll be ready in a minute."

"Actually, I'm here to spend my off-time," you say. "And how did you hear about that anyway? Those sidejobs are supposed to be classified."

"I have certain family connections," Mary says as she moves closer to you. She's not close enough to make it feel intimate, but it does feel more private. "Even if I turned my back on the family business, some of these connections decided I was still useful. If anything, it might have made me even more useful to them."

"That does make sense," you say.

>"How about a joyride in the Excalibur? It's been a while since I ran off in a TSF to impress a woman."
>"Is your bar still open? I've got a feeling I'm going to need some liquid courage before my 'extracurricular assignment'."

"Is your bar still open? I've got a feeling I'm going to need some liquid courage before my 'extracurricular assignment'."

"Of course." Mary smiles. "We'll probably be the only ones there, too."

You look at your watch. Yeah, it's definitely too early to be drinking. It takes you all of one second to decide you really don't care.

"That's fine with me."

Mary guides you to super secret vodka fortress hidden at the back of the hangar. As she guessed, you're the only ones there. You crash on the couch while Mary takes a chilled bottle and two shot glasses out.

She pours you each a glass. You tilt your head back and finish yours in one shot. Mary is much more conservative with her sips.

"I'm going to need more of those before the end of the day," you say.

"You shouldn't overdo it," Mary says. "You don't want to meet MI5 smelling like a drunk."

"I'm not so sure about that," you say. "Maybe if I show up drunk to one of their jobs, they'll stop asking for me. Then again, I did volunteer, so..."

Mary sidles up next to you on the couch.

"So, what did you want to talk about?"

>"Nothing. I just wanted to relax a little."
>"You. It's been too long since we talked like this."
>"The debauched future of our polygamous arrangement."

"I mostly just wanted to relax," you say. "It's been one job after another for a while now, and it's been too long since we talked like this."

"I know what you mean." Mary pours herself another shot. Instead of sipping this one, she drinks it in one go and slams the glass back on the table. "Around here, the only thing I can really talk about is work. It makes downtime very dull."

"It's about the same with TSF pilots," you say. "For the most part, we just reminisce about our most suicidal manoeuvres."

"That sounds a lot more interesting that ruminating maintenance issues." Mary pours you yet another glass. "Have you ever wondered about what civilians talk about?"

You pause a moment to think about that. Then you take a longer pause to try and remember the last time you talked to a civilian. You remember some cab drivers and a couple of clerks, but you never really talked to any of them. Your parents are stuck in the politics of the war, so they don't really count either.

"Huh." You drink your shot. "I honestly can't remember the last time I talked with someone who wasn't in the military or in politics. There's a depressing thought for you. I have no life outside this war."

"If it makes you feel any better, I'm the same," Mary says. "I thought about walking away from the war entirely, you know? I could have gone to a university in the states and gotten a job away from the war. But then I realized there were no jobs outside war. Even in America, the labour force is revolves around the war in one way or another."

"The BETA took our land, our lives and our freedom to have mediocre dead-end jobs." You finish your current shot and push the glass outside your reach. You've had enough, at least for now. "At least we still have our future."

"Bloody right we do." Mary nuzzles against you. "I wonder what my first conversation after the war is going to be about."

"Well, first things first," you say. "We're going to need to pry our pensions out of the RAF's cold dead hands."

"Wait, Elaine told me your family was rich," Mary says. "Something about lost Nazi gold?"

"It's not lost if we found it, and most of that money is tied up in crooked business or government deals," you say. "But that's not the important part. Once we get our pensions, we'll need to find a place to settle down."

"I like that idea," Mary says. "I suppose you'll be looking for a place in Switzerland?"

"Hopefully something near the Swiss Alps," you say. "I imagine it'll be oddly quiet until people really start moving back to the continent."

"Someone has to start and it'll probably have to be military personnel." Mary gets up to put away the bottle and shot glasses. "We'll need to secure living areas before civilians can move back in, after all."

"I suppose that's true." You stand up and look at your watch again. The afternoon is just starting. "I've got plenty of time before I need to go."

"I can think of one or two ways to pass time," Mary says. "I've had all the quality time I need for the moment, so I don't mind if we invite Vivian and Elaine to come along."

"I'll look for Elaine, you go find Vivian," you say. "I guess we'll meet back here?"

"Sure," Mary says.

It's not quite the dead of winter and the weather around here is relatively mild as far as these things go, but the walk back to the barracks is still chilly.

You find Elaine in your room, laying in her bed and staring at the ceiling. She briefly looks at you as you enter, but says nothing.

"You look absolutely terrible," you say as you sit on your bed across from Elaine. "What's wrong?"

"I got a letter from home," she says. "My father died. I need to leave tomorrow to sort things out."

"Are you-"

"Yeah, I'll be fine." She closes her eyes for a moment and then swings herself into a sitting position. "I think everyone in my family saw this coming anyway, and after we lost Bedivere squadron, one person's death doesn't seem so big anymore."

"Your father's death isn't just one person's death," you say. "You don't have to push yourself."

"I know." She nods slowly. "It just feels so strange. My father died and all I can think about is how I'm going to deal with my mother and my sister and the inheritance."

>"You don't have to deal with it if you don't want to."

"It's not strange. It's called 'feeling responsible,' not that I would know."

"I guess it is." She stands up. "And I guess cockteasing you all the time isn't very responsible."

"I can deal with it." You stand up as well and pull her into a hug. "I fight aliens for a living, so everything else seems minor in comparison."

"Surviving certain death does put things in perspective."

You stay like this for a few minutes before you remember to invite Elaine to whatever Mary's planning.

"I'm leaving to take care of sidejob this evening, so I've got the day off," you say. "I'm meeting with Mary and Vivian, and apparently I'm supposed to bring a swimsuit. Would you like to come along?"

"I think I could use a distraction," Elaine says as she pulls away from you and goes to rummage through her things. She takes out a black and yellow two-piece swimsuit that is somehow more revealing than her usual underwear.

You take your own swimsuit and go back to Mary's improvised bar, where you find her waiting with Vivian.

"I thought you would get started without us," Mary says.

You open your mouth, but Elaine cuts her off.

"I just had something to take care of, it's not a big deal," she says. "Where are we going?"

"The research hangar," Mary says. "I have a private hot tub in there."

"How did you manage to build a hot tub in a research lab," Vivian asks.

"I added it to the schematics as part of the air conditioning," Mary says. "You can get a lot of leeway for these things if you're creative."

"I suppose I should be thankful it wasn't built into the waste disposal system," you say.

"That sounds like fun," Elaine says. "First one in the tub gets to sit on Julian's lap."

... why are you never consulted about these things? And wouldn't Mary have a significant advantage, since she's the only one who knows where it is?

What follows is a mad rush to wherever Mary keeps her top-secret hot tub and since you need to follow the girls, you're also forced to run at full pace to keep up with them. Mary leads you outside and through her research hangar, around the supply closets and to some sort of maintenance room where a bath full of bubbling water is waiting for you. Both laughing and breathing heavily from their rush here, the women duck into a sideroom to get changed, while you get changed next to the tub, which gives you the chance to dip in first.

It's not much, but it's the first time you've had a real bath in goddamn years and nostalgia factor more than makes up for the poor location. You sit on a small bench, lean against the side of the tub and relax.

Then Elaine jumps in wearing her black and yellow bikini and throws her arms around your neck as she sits in your lap. She looks up at you and smiles.

"I won," she says.

"Didn't we just talk about this? Something about responsibility and cockteasing?"

"I'll be responsible later."

Mary and Vivian follow in. Mary's wearing a simple white one-piece swimsuit, but Vivian's in a dark purple bikini that does more to support her breasts than actually cover them, and her side-tie bottom does not cover her back.

"You know, Vivian, I used to think you were the shy, quiet one," you say. "Isn't that swimsuit a little too revealing?"

"A woman has to put some effort into these things," Vivian says as she slips into the bath.

"I can do without the extra consideration, thank you," you say. "I get more than enough as it is."

"Who said I was doing this for you," Vivian asks as she wraps one arm around Mary, who doesn't seem to mind.

"I hate you all," you say. "I hate you all too much."

"No, you don't," Elaine says. "I can tell."

Of course she can, she's sitting in your lap.

"So much hate..."

You slide one arm all the way down Elaine's back and place your free hand under her thigh to support her better. She looks surprised for a moment, but then she calmly closes her eyes and places her full weight on you.

"The two of you can sit next to me, if you want," you say.

"If you insist," Mary says as she and Vivian slide in next to you. They can't really lean on you, but it's still nice to feel them close.

You think back to the quasi-dates the four have you have had. The most normal one was the reception where you and Elaine received your medals, followed distantly by the time Elaine and Vivian stayed with you while you were performing improvised surgery on S-11 bombs and missile casings. What you're doing now would probably count as a normal date, if you weren't with three other women.

"I'm going to be away on assignment for a while," you say. "I don't know when it'll be over, but I'll try to make it back by the new year."

"Don't worry about it," Vivian says. "Mary and I will look after the Excalibur for you. We have our own evaluations to run."

"I'll have my family issues sorted out by then, one way or the other," Elaine says.

"This is a good time to sort out unfinished business," Mary says. "That way, you can start the new year fresh."

'Unfinished business.' For you, that means the CIA, the BETA and the three women sitting in a hot tub with you. The CIA and the BETA are out of your hands, but your relationships aren't. You've agreed to let them sort things out amongst themselves first to prevent bad blood, but it's not like you're uninvolved. You'll need to move forward...

Even after you're done with this assignment, you'll have a lot of work left to do. You don't want to be distracted, and you want to make sure Vivian, Mary and Elaine are comfortable with your arrangement before you move forward with it. You can deal with this after you've knocked down a proper Hive.

For now, you hold on to Elaine and enjoy a warm bath. You'll need to come back here often now that you've found the place.

Your relaxation is cut short when you need to go back to the barracks to grab dinner and pack some clothes. Mary and Vivian stay behind to relax a while longer, but both you and Elaine need get ready to travel.

Elaine's not leaving until morning, so she can at least enjoy a good night's rest in a warm bed. You, however, are walking around in the cold, looking for the car that's waiting for you. It's actually not all that hard to find. It's the only one with the lights on.

You open the car's back door and sit next to M.

"Flying officer Reber, before we begin, I must ask you a very important question," she says. "Do you know how to disarm a nuclear warhead?"

Yeah. This is going to suck.
