Your name is Michael Dunkin, and you now work for the Inquisition. Previously you were a sergeant in the 291st Cadian Stormtroopers, but now you find yourself in the company of Inquisitor Christina Massey, of the Ordos Xenos. After saving her life at the cost of your men and your life (the old one, at least), you've been officially proclaimed a dead hero and recruited into her retinue. Now, with your new life and future in her hands, you're tasked with looking after Christina's well being. And whatever else that entails.

After awaking in a hospital bed and meeting two members of your team- the odd Techpriest Melodi 'Fritz' Coyle and the Inquisitor herself- you gather your bearings and begin to meet the rest of your fellow agents.

Father Mikal is a sizable man to behold; not giant, but large enough to take note. He may bare the clothes and tattoos of the church, but you know another guardsman when you see one. The older man greets both you and the Inquisitor with a kind smile and a nod.

"Another sheep for the flock," he notes. "Welcome, my son."

"Father, this is Sergeant Michael," Christina waves a hand toward you. "You've already met, I believe."

Now that you think about it, there IS something vaguely familiar about him...

Then you realize he was with Christina when you first met. He looked much less serene then, covered in 'Nid blood as he was, but by that point you probably looked much the same.

"So we have," Mikal says. "Come to join me, or simply meeting new people?"

"Just passing through, Father," You explain. "For today, at least."

You expect some sort of request or suggestion to attend the next service, but instead Mikel only nods in understanding.

"We all have our time and place," He says. "Please, don't let me keep you. I'm sure you'll find much more interesting company elsewhere. Sergeant. My Lady."

With one final, curt nod the father turns on his feel and starts off toward a door behind the statue of the Emperor.

"Well, that's one down," Christina notes. "What did you think?"

Your suspicions continue to nag at you as you and Christina exit the temple. Deciding it wouldn't hurt, you voice your question.

"Where did he serve before he took up the cloth?" You ask.

"Oh, ho. How observant," She praises you with a smirk. "He was with the Valhallan 108th before he joined the clergy. That didn't last long though. Father Mikel has certain... habits that his Ecclesiarchy friends frowned upon. Rather than execute him or waste him in a Penal Legion, I decided he'd be most useful with me."

You consider asking her about these 'habits', but you decide against it. Chances are you'll find out eventually. Now, though, you take off to find...

You're led back onto the elevator and down you go, traveling for a time with the same quiet, annoying jingle as before. Thankfully, it's a short trip and before long you're out and moving down a hall.

"The Antebellum's Armsmen are made of tougher stuff than most, but I always like to have a few tricks up my sleeve," Christina explains as you near the end of the hall, where a blast door awaits. "Alpha Team is one of such tricks. Stormtroopers, like you, but specifically trained by the Inquisition. They're professionalism and firepower add that extra punch we sometimes need."

The door's mechanisms begin to whir to life and after a few moments it slides free with a faint groan. Inside, you see the familiar makings of a barracks. The same bland beds, starched sheets, bleak walls, and the ornery men using them beating the crap out of one another.

"YOU HIT LIKE A GIRL!"

"THAT'S CAUSE I -AM- A GIRL, YOU GAKKER!"

Well, Troopers.

There are five of them, all told. Two of them are locked in hand to hand combat while another two seem torn between stepping in and watching. The last seems oblivious to the whole affair, preferring to instead read a book on his bunk.

Judging by Christina's expression, this isn't a usual occurrence, and neither man nor woman seem ready to back down.

Trained for the Inquisition? These are the people you grew up hoping to be?

Pathetic.

"AAATEEN-SHUN!" You bark, storming forward before Christina can object.

The whole room seems to freeze, and by then you're blood's pumping well and good.

"ABOUUUT, FACE!" You call, and as if on nothing but instinct the four snap to attention, facing you as one. Even the fifth, a large dark man with ornate earings and what you presume is a Mohawk, has put down his book and is watching you.

The others stare on in shock and confusion, looking between you and Christina. The Inquisitor hasn't made a noise so far, so she must be letting you take the reigns.

We're a no-name Sergeant from some no no-name regiment fresh off some no-name dirtball who's officially dead. They're Schola Progenum Stormtroopers trained by the Inquisition.

Though right now, given their behavior, I'd say just about everyone outranks them.

Also, when we're done setting their shit straight: "Now, where are these Stormtroopers I've been hearing about?"
>>
>>31963466
I agree with the guy that said we go Full Metal Jacket DI Hartigan on them.
>>
>>31963109

With their attention firmly on you, your voice lowers to a more reasonable but no less authoritative tone, turning several degrees cooler as well.

"Someone has three seconds to explain what I'm looking at." You say, glaring at each man and woman in turn.

They're certainly not what you were expecting, but then again you never really had a concrete image to begin with. One thing does surprise you, though.

Most of them are Cadians.

Three of them, two men and the woman of the squad, have the same dark hair and violet eyes as yourself. Well, one of them's actually lacking a single hair on his head, but the facial hair works just as well.

The other, besides the one laying down, is someone you can't tack down, though. Blonde headed, clean-shaven, and looking everywhere but at you, you try and tack down his birthplace but come up with nothing.

"Just a friendly little sparing match, sir," The bald one says, attempting to sound joking. The black eye he's beginning to sport says otherwise, though.

"You expect me to believe that?" You ask, giving the man a hard stare. Then, just before he starts to squirm, another speaks up.

"I started it, sir," The woman pipes up. "We're all a bit high-strung, and I... I guess I snapped a little."

"Heh. No kidding," Their fifth man chuckles, having stood up and approached the group from behind. She seems to contemplate turning around and saying something, but decides against it.

"That's no excuse, Corporal, and you know it," You say, giving the pips on her shoulder a quick glance. She grimaces, but offering no rebuke, and with a grunt you set your hands on your hips and scan the group.

"Now," You say. "Where are these Stormtroopers I've been hearing about?"

"We're it, sir," Baldy says. "Well, what's left, anyways."

Well, you suppose that makes sense. Considering the beating the normal troops took, it's a surprise there are as many as there are standing before you. Still, you're expression remains hard.

"Who commands here?" You ask, and the woman stiffens.

"I do. Corporal Kelleher, sir," She says, snapping to a crisp salute before giving a rueful smile. "Though I suppose it's soon to be Sergeant."

"Indeed," Christina says, having finally decided to join the conversation beside you. Her face is made of stone, much like yours, but you can't help but see a flicker of respect when she glances at you. "Sergeant Walkens asked me to make it so before he died."

Despite the heavy words, the Inquisitor's level tone seems to sober them substantially. You understand that losing friends is never an easy time, but acting like hotheaded idiots never helps. Having recovered, Kelleher and the others look resigned to whatever comes next.

Looking over the squad, you sigh, most of your ire gone. Maybe it wasn't just a lack of discipline on their part that got you so angry, but that's a thought for later.

"What are we? Stormtroopers, or a bunch of juves at the Schola? You've got more training in your pinky finger than a PDF platoon has put together. Act like it!" You say. Then, however, you tone and expression soften.

"You're angry. I get that. More than you think. But picking fights with each other isn't going to bring back your dead. They're gone, and now it's up to you to carry on. You think Walkens would approve seeing you act like this, Kelleher? Would those that died want to see any of you tear one another apart like this?" You ask, getting only remorseful and ashamed expressions. Good. They're learning.

"You've only got one direction to go from here, and that's forward. You want to get angry? Get angry! But use it on your enemies, not yourselves! You work together, you fight together, and if need be you die together. That's the Guardsman way, and no matter how much fancy gear you have, that's what you are. Be proud of it, and be proud of the people that you served with."

A new sense of determination seems to have found its way into the group; even the blonde-haired trooper actually decides to make eye contact with you. They all seem to collectively take a breath, and then you reel on them again.

"And another thing!" You start, making them all (except the fifth member, who seems to merely be there for the others benefits) freeze once more. "If you're going to start a brawl, you're going to do it in a way your sergeant would approve of. That means securing a proper arena, get a betting pool started with the other troops, and for fucks sake, post a watch in the hall!"

You pause just enough for them to gape, then grin. Kelleher is the first to let out a snort, and after that the squad lets out a much-needed laugh (you even notice Christina cracking a smile beside you).

(Cont.)
>>
>>31964442

After a few minutes the laughter dies down and the somber mood is all but gone. Wearing an honest smile, Kelleher shakes her head and looks back to you.

"Thanks for that, sir," She says, but just like that her expression changes to one of uncertainty. "Uh... on that note... no offence, but who the gak are you?"

About that time the others seem to come to the same question, and look on to you for an answer.

Having come down from the high of slipping back into the shoes of an instructor, you suddenly feel physically and mentally exhausted. You don't let it show, or so you think, but all the same Christina picks up the slack when you pause to keep from teetering.

"This is Michael Duncan, previous member of the Cadian 291st, and he'll be joining us for a while. I take it you have no objections?"

"Of course not, ma'am," Kelleher says, now the proper soldier. "He'll be taking over here?"

"Oh, no," Christina gives a smile you're already too familiar with. "You're not getting out of this THAT easy, Roxy. George had a lot of faith in you, and so do I."

The Corporal colors somewhat at the praise, but nods all the same. Quick to move on, she straightens and gives another salute.

"Corporal Roxy Kelleher, at your service!" She says, and the other quickly follow suit.

"Trooper Gabriel Ely," The big man rumbles, smiling. "Call me Gabe if you like. Or not. S'up to you."

"Trooper Jami Griggs," The blonde trooper mumbles. "Probably next to die."

"Trooper Dominic Beaudoin," Baldy grins. "Thrilled."

"Trooper Jonah Bedard," The final, and so far silent, member of the squad responds in a voice as quiet as a whisper. You return the salute to them all, and soon enough they relax and begin to drift to various parts of the barracks, with only Roxy remaining behind.

"So, new guy, huh?" She asks. "Will we be seeing you during drills? I'd like to see if you shoot as well as you talk."

At the mention of food your stomach lets out an unhappy snarl, and with clear amusement Christina waits for some sort of remark to try and cover it. Instead, you only sigh and give a nod of agreement.

"Yeah. Solid food sounds good right about now." You admit.

"Wonderful," She smiles, clasping her hands together as you board the elevator once more. "I assure you, you'll find much better menu here than in your old profession."

"Here's hoping."

After a time you come to a new stop, and a short walk later sees you to a fairly crowded mess hall. Compared to most ships you've been on this place certainly has top scores in decor, and the smell that hits you as you enter is a promising one.

There's a sizable line awaiting their turn for the cooks ahead, but they all take a sudden step to the right as Christina nears. A handful of them nod or offer a short greeting, but most either continue their own conversations or at least try and not act like they're staring.

"Well look who's decided to grace us with her presence, boys!" A merry voice calls, and an overweight man in a cooking hat and apron behind the counter signals you closer. "It's been a while, Lady Massey."

"I heard some complaints about the quality of the food you were serving the men," Christina warns, though the smile she wears (a friendly one, this time) lessens the affect. "I came down to investigate."

"Ah, I see," The man nods sagely when he spots you, offering you a grin and an over-dramatic bow. "Greetings, and welcome, to Marbo's kitchen! The finest eatery in the Imperium."

The cook seems to give this serious contemplation before shaking his head.

"I don't believe so. Why?" He asks.

"Oh, nothing. Just a hunch."

"Uh huh," Marbo nods slowly, shooting Christina a look that seems to scream 'another one?' Still, he's quick to give you your meal and you're happily surprised at your find. Caffeine that looks relatively drinkable, ackenberry waffles, and something resembling a meat that's not possibly the guy in Second Squad that bit it last week.

"Mi'lady!" He calls, seemingly thrilled to see her. "Would you like my seat? If you want I co-"

"That's quite alright, Eric," She halts him with a hand, taking instead a free chair. You join her, drawing the man's attention away from her as he cocks his head to the side.

"Eh? Since when have you been with us?" He asks, obviously confused.

"Michael," Christina sighs. "This is Eric; my team's pilot."

Enjoying a swig of caffeine, you regard the pilot with an easy smile.

"I've been around," You shrug, as if it was old news. "You just haven't noticed until now."

After a few moments of staring he squints, hand bringing up a fork that points menacingly at you.

"Hey, hey, hey! Don't you go pulling any of Specter's bullshit! I got enough trouble watching out for one, I don't need two! The last thing I need is another ninja to worry about and he's dicking with me, isn't he, Mi'lady?" Somewhere halfway through his last sentence, Eric changes from vindictive to sheepish as Christina doesn't even try hiding her enjoyment to the unfolding scene.

"Yes, Eric, he's 'dicking' with you," She says, raising a brow at his wording and causing the pilot to flush red and stammer.

"A-appologies, Mi'lady! I shouldn't use s-such language like that," He manages.

Since you are talking about keeping the pilot on edge, my concern is that the Lady Inquisitor here will like our teasing and join in, thus making this betamax pilot jealous.

But such betamax pilot is surely not loyal for team, nor cares about us. I feel that he is more of risk factor that is going to brake down at some point. His previous mistakes just prove how unfitting pilot he is, therefor only safe precaution is to rid of him, and psyops seems reasonable enough for now.

But we can leave it be for now, but I bet that this is going to end badly with lose canon.

The thought of continuing your torment is an intriguing possibility, but you decide against it. Instead, you turn your focus to your meal and dig in like the starving man you currently are. Though disappointed at the end of your teasing, Christina moves on regardless.

"You're eating," She notes. "So I take it repairs are done?"

"Mi'lady!" Eric says, feigning hurt. "I wouldn't be worth the oil under my nails if I didn't take my job seriously. I brought the ole girl back to tip top shape two days ago. I was looking to try and find you to tell you so, but I knew you were busy so I decided against it."

Christina takes this all with a few nods as she spends a moment to work on her own meal. Then, putting down her mug of caffeine, she looks at him again.

"So you talked the captain into getting us those engine upgrades?" She asks, smiling sweetly.

Eric pauses, blinks, opens his mouth, then slams it shut with an audible clack as he jumps to his feet.

"Right on it, Mi'lady!" He says before taking off, his own food suddenly forgotten about. Impressively, he manages to just avoid a cleaning servitor stacked high with dirty plates. It's not until he's well out of sight that Christina leans over, laughter clear in her voice.

"I actually forgot to tell me," She explains. "But at least now he'll be quick about it."

"I'm glad to see we'll be getting along swimmingly," She says.

"Will be talking to me like that from now on?" You ask, honestly curious.

"Oh, heavens no," She scoffs, waving her hand dismissively. "It's just he's the easiest of the bunch to get flustered. And the most fun."

Then, however, her expression softens a bit.

"Don't go too overboard, though," She tells you. "He may be a bit naive, but he's a good kid. Don't let him fool you, either; he knows what happened back there cost both of us dearly."

Then, as if conversing about the weather, she's back sitting straight and finishing up her meal.

"We can dawdle a moment if you want," She offers. "Is there anything you'd like to ask or discuss?"

You contemplate your options before finally deciding on something.

"How did you and Melodi come to know one another?" You ask, to her apparent surprise. She takes a moment, as if trying to form an answer.

"We've known each other a long time," She says. "She was my second ever operative, and I started out that small quite some time ago. I suppose you could call us childhood friends, if you're feeling sentimental. Luckily, I'm not in the mood."

She stirs the almost empty cup of caffeine before draining it completely.

"Anything else?"

"I think that covers things for now," You shake your head, and after disposing of yours and the Inquisitors plates (She offers a curious 'thank you') you continue on.

This time you're lead to the higher levels, the halls smaller and much more expensive than before. You have a few choice words to make about the waste of money, but decide against voicing them. Instead, you follow Christina wordlessly as the explains.

"While Melodi may be my second oldest agent, Leopaldo Roland-my savant- is the first. And in more ways than one," She informs you, stopping at a door seemingly at random and keying the console nearby. It opens, and both of you step inside to find a room covered with numerous but neatly stacked piles of books, files, and dataslates. At first you don't see or hear anything.

"Leo?" Christina calls out, and a mound of paper goes flying as the desk at the far end of the room moves and a form detaches from it.

"Hu-wh-ha-Yes, Lady Massey?" An very old, very weathered old man asks, blinking a few times before he finally seems to find the two of you. When he sees you, however, he smiles.

"Ah, Sergeant," He pauses. "Or should it be Lieutenant? We never quite decided which one you would prefer."

"It could have its perks, I guess," You decide.

"Very good, very good," Leo nods, typing something into a nearby dataslate. "Yes; Michael Dunkin, age twenty six, born on Cadia, Kasr Dromuss, to the parents of-"

"I think he knows his history," Christina says. "Most of it, at least."

"Quite right. My apologies," He says with a small shrug. "As you may have gathered from my workplace, I can answer most any questions you have. All I require is time and a subject matter."

"Just don't work him too hard," Christina advises, much to Leo's chagrin.

"Are you implying something, my dear?" He asks.

"Your old, Leo," Christina chuckles. "We both know it. No need to try and avoid the fact."

"Oh, yes, quite right," The Savant returns the smile. "Much like you, born on Ostio, age-"

"Another word and I throw you out the airlock."

"Oh, but I have so much to tell!" Leo grins, and suddenly you're starting to get a picture of how Christina became the woman she is. "I thought you liked being transparent with your agents, Lady Massey."

"When it suits me," She growls, and even though it's not pointed at you, you take a step back. Partly to avoid her scorn, and also so the grin you're sporting goes unnoticed.

"Oh, yes, apologies. Must have slipped my mind," Leo sighs, head bowing. "As you say, I'm growing quite on in my years..."

"But you're so hard headed you'll be around a thousand more," She sighs, torn between being aggravated and laughing. "Anything USEFUL you're able to tell our newest member?"

The savant closes his eyes, head tilting side to side as he gives the question serious contemplation. Then, he opens his eyes again and looks to you.

"When he's part of the ground team, steer well away from Father Mikel," He informs you, voice grave.

"Sound advice," Christina nods.

A familiar sinking feeling forms in your gut, and it's not from breakfast. You don't want to, but you force yourself to say the word.

"...why?" You ask.

The savant and Inquisitor exchange looks, and Leo lets out a weary sigh.

"Have you ever heard of or seen an Eversor?" He asks, then gives a cheerful laugh. "Oh, of course not. Then you'd be dead. While nowhere near as potent or deadly-be a kind boy and refrain from telling him so-, he's still very much a potent ally."

"I'd like to say my savant's exaggerating, but I'm afraid he's not," Christina confirms your fears, though you're not completely sure what they're of. Certainly Mikel was an imposing figure, especially if he tried to be, but he reminded you more of a grandfather than a warrior, even with his past experience.

"Now, if you excuse me, I believe I have some files to... find," Leos says, scanning his surroundings. "A12 was below C32, but I moved both to the second file to the right after the left began to overflow..."

"I think this is a good time to part ways," Christina suggests, and you're inclined to agree. You bid ways with the old savant who's already off on a tangent of his own. After the door shuts behind you the Inquisitor lets out a sigh, but she seems to have enjoyed the visit all the same.

With yet another member down you head to a by now familiar elevator. You've realized by now that it's oddly small for such a large ship, and that it's probably meant for Christina and a select few alone. Still, the jingle could be excluded.

"Do you remember what I told you about the Antebellum's armsmen?" Christina asks as you disembark. "Whenever I need serious firepower without conscripting local troops, they answer the call, and I need someone capable to handle most any situation leading them."

You continue until you come through an entrance to find a training yard, much like the ones you'd been on before. Obstacle courses, gun ranges, and various other ways to train. The one in particular Christina leads you to, however, is a number of black and gold armored soldiers gathered around a table, with a handful of wooden targets nearby and a container behind them. The tallest among them, a lanky man with shaggy hair and a blue sunburst tattoo on his cheek, points at the container and speaks much like you had before, clear and authoritative.

"Put your hand on that wall, trooper," The man in question hesitates, clearly uncertain, then almost jumps out of his skin when the DI speaks again. "PUT YOUR HAND ON THAT WALL!"

With great hesitation the trooper walks over and presses his hand against the surface, and though you glance at Christina she seems to be more than enjoying herself. Looking back, you just manage to catch the DI throw something, and a moment later the armsman in question is screaming and gripping the pressed hand with his free one. The hilt of a dagger protrudes from the man's palm.

Smirking, the DI casually strolls through the crowd and turns back to them, signaling to the wounded man with a hand.

"The enemy can not push a button... if you disable his hand," He explains as if it's the easiest and simplest concept in the galaxy. Scowling, he looks over his shoulder. "MEDIC!"

(Cont.)
>>
>>31969348

It's about that time he sees you two.

With a grunt, and without turning back to look, the DI grabs the hilt and yanks it free. He's already on his way over as the man hits the ground, carefully wiping blood free of the blade on his pants leg before return it to its sheath.

"Ma'am," He nods to Christina before turning to you and grinning. "Well I'll be damned. You made it."

"Oh, of course," Christina rolls her eyes. "Vincent plays several roles. Outside of combat he trains the men, while in it he either serves as a sharpshooter or commands a contingent of armsmen."

"Yeah, ma'am. Great planning on that one," Vincent gives a toothy grin. "Give the sniper command."

Instead of giving a quip Christina only smiles; perhaps it's an old joke. Regardless, the Commander looks you over before raising a brow.

"Lookin' pretty good for a dead man," He remarks. "Think I could see what we'll be workin' with? I'll go easy on ya, I swear."
